Weekend cruises: How to find 2- and 3-night getaways

Erica Silverstein

Weekend trips let you get away without missing too much work or school — but what if your preferred escape is a cruise? I'm here to tell you that weekend cruises are a real thing and can be a wonderful way of getting your ship fix when you're short on time.

The days of the two-night cruise to nowhere are gone, but two- and three-night weekend cruises still exist from ports ranging from Miami to Los Angeles. Read on to learn who sails these short getaways, where you can go and how much that weekend jaunt to the Bahamas is going to cost you.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Best weekend cruise itineraries

carnival 2 day cruise weekend getaways

If you're looking to hop a ship for a few nights, you can't just sail from anywhere to anywhere. It's not like booking a hotel. Thanks to the complicated Passenger Vessel Services Act , foreign-flagged cruise ships cannot leave port, sail in circles with their casinos, shops and spas open, then return back to port two nights later. Nor can they hop from one U.S. city to another. Ships need to call in another country before heading back – which limits where you can sail on a weekend cruise.

The most popular weekend cruises sail from Miami, Port Canaveral or Palm Beach in Florida, to the Bahamas, with one or two stops in Nassau, Freeport or the cruise line's private island. Consider it a quick dash to the beach — ironic because you have to get to a warm-weather, coastal area to meet your ship in the first place.

On the Pacific Coast, weekend cruises from Los Angeles, San Diego or Long Beach in California (near Los Angeles) head to Ensenada, Mexico for a quick getaway. Farther north, you might find a short repositioning sailing between Seattle or San Francisco and Vancouver, British Columbia at the beginning or end of the Alaska cruise season .

Weekend cruises from New York or other East Coast ports like Boston or Baltimore don't really exist because two or three nights is not enough time to get to Canada, Bermuda or the Bahamas and back again.

Related: Caribbean vs. Bahamas cruises: Which itinerary will I like more?

The other key thing to understand is a weekend cruise will typically require some time off work or missed school. That's because most cruise ships board in the afternoon and depart in the early evening then return to port in the morning. You can't punch out of work at 5 p.m. on Friday, hop aboard a ship and return Sunday night.

The most likely scenario is that you'll arrive at your ship Friday afternoon for a three-night cruise, which will deliver you back to port on Monday morning. Depending on your working hours, you might need to take a half day off on Friday and arrive late to work on Monday. If you've got a flexible schedule or Fridays off — no problem. A few lines offer Thursday or Saturday departures for three-night cruises, but they're rare and would require more missed school or work.

Two-nighters are rare in the weekend cruise world but do exist. The key line for cruisers short on time is Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line (come late April, it will transition into Margaritaville at Sea ).

This line sails exclusively two-night cruises back and forth between West Palm Beach, Florida, and Freeport, Bahamas. Depending on the week, you could depart on a Friday, spend Saturday on Grand Bahama Island and come home Sunday. Or, leave Saturday, beach it up Sunday and return Monday morning.

Cruise lines sailing 2- and 3-night weekend cruises

carnival 2 day cruise weekend getaways

You can count on Bahamas Paradise/Margaritaville at Sea for a quick weekend cruise fix, but that's a one-ship cruise line sailing an older, refurbished ship. From the major cruise lines, most of the big-ship lines offer a consistent schedule of three-night cruises. The higher-end, luxury lines rarely offer a sailing that short.

Carnival Cruise Line , Disney Cruise Line , MSC Cruises , Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean all offer three-night Bahamas cruises from Florida to Nassau and/or the line's private island. Departure ports include Miami, Port Canaveral and Fort Lauderdale.

Carnival, Disney and Royal Caribbean also take care of West Coast folks with three-night sailings from southern California (Long Beach, Los Angeles and San Diego) to Ensenada, Mexico.

You can count on those lines to offer entire seasons of short sailings. A few other lines, such as Holland America or Princess Cruises , will offer the occasional repositioning sailing along the Pacific Coast between San Francisco or Seattle and Vancouver. Sometimes those short cruises will fall over a weekend, allowing you that quick getaway without missing work.

Weekend cruise cost

Cheap weekend cruises are not hard to find; three-night sailings are among the most affordable cruises you can buy, both because you're not on board all that long, and because cruise lines often put older ships without the latest wow-factor attractions on these routes.

I'm currently seeing three-night Bahamas cruises from $129 per person, based on two people sharing an inside (windowless) cabin . That breaks down to $43/night for transportation, food, accommodations and entertainment for one person ($86/night for a couple). You'll have a hard time finding a hotel for that price, let alone lodging plus multiple meals.

The cheapest balcony cabin I found was just shy of $200 total for one person (under $65 per night), though fares in the $200s and $300s were more common.

Prices will vary depending on the cruise line, ship, sail date and how far in advance you're booking. If you're flexible on timing, look for the best weekend cruise deals and plan your getaway for those dates.

Related: 6 ways to get a deal on a cruise

Three-night Mexico cruises at press time are starting at $149 per person ($50 per night), with balconies from $237 ($79 per night).

Note that Disney cruises to the Bahamas or Mexico are priced much higher than other cruise lines. Pricing for a three-night Disney Mexico cruise starts just shy of $1,000 per person for an inside cabin and a three-night Bahamas cruise from $625 per person. Still, it's cheaper than a weeklong Disney cruise.

Pros and cons of weekend cruises

carnival 2 day cruise weekend getaways

Weekend cruises only work if you live within easy driving distance of a departure port. That way, you can still work half a day on Friday and simply arrive back to work a little late on Monday (assuming you're a 9-to-5-er).

If you need to fly or drive many hours to your departure port, you're looking at more of a long weekend with a day or two of time off from work required. However, if you have a flexible schedule or work off hours, a weekend cruise is definitely doable.

Weekend cruises have many benefits, the obvious one being they do not require missing much school or work. They're more affordable than a longer cruise, so they can be great for folks on a budget. You can tack them onto a longer vacation in Florida or California to combine two trips into one.

These short trips are also a great way to rack up points toward elite status on your favorite cruise line, especially if you book a suite that earns you extra points.

Related: Short cruises are cheaper, but are they right for you?

The drawbacks are the lack of choice in destination and cruise line. You won't be able to try every restaurant or attraction on board your cruise ship because you simply won't have enough time.

If you party hard, get sunburned or wear yourself out with lots of active shore excursions, you might come home exhausted instead of well rested and not ready to return to the office on Monday.

Weekend cruises also have a reputation for being party cruises. The last time I sailed on a three-night cruise, I met lots of ladies on bachelorette party getaways, and the nightclub, bars and karaoke were hopping each evening — more so than on longer cruises. If you're looking for a more sedate atmosphere, a longer cruise might be more your speed.

Bottom line

Weekend cruises are a fun way to get your ship fix without taking a full vacation or breaking the bank. They make more sense if you live within an hour or two of your cruise ship's departure port, but it can still be worth taking a long weekend for a three-day cruise even if you have to build in some travel time.

However, if you love cruising so much that you might have a hard time leaving a ship after just a few nights, you might want to skip the weekend sailing and save up for a weeklong cruise instead.

Carnival Sunrise Cruise ship at port at night

How I Picked My Weekend Getaway Cruise on the Carnival Sunrise

This week, I booked my first ever weekend cruise, a 4-day cruise on the Carnival Sunrise. I just got back from a fantastic vacation in Iceland (it wasn’t a cruise, so I won’t go into it here), but it was an adventure-packed trip, and I thought the next trip should be a nice relaxing one preferably somewhere warm. At the same time, I didn’t want to dedicate a whole week because I have several other plans next year. So that meant I was looking at weekend cruises that were 3 or 4 days.

Weekend cruises have been growing in popularity over the past few years. In the old days, cruise lines mostly offered 7 day or longer itineraries. While some short cruises were available, they were usually on older ships that hadn’t been updated in years without much to do onboard. However, the culture is shifting, with younger workers not wanting to dedicate a whole week of valuable vacation days to one trip. Instead, they prefer multiple, shorter vacations over the weekend. Royal Caribbean took the lead in observing this trend and changing their offerings. They started offering a variety of 3, 4, and 5-night cruises on some of their recently “amplified,” their word for updated, ships. These ships have everything the “stars” of their fleet have; the newest restaurants, bars, attractions like the Flow Rider, etc. It meant weekend cruises no longer meant sacrifice.

With that in mind, I took a look at the possible weekend cruises. I’ll take you through how I decided to pick this specific cruise on the Carnival Sunrise. I had a few factors that I had to consider; the time of year, the departure port, the ports of call, and the ship.

When to take the cruise?

January, February, and March are my favorite months to cruise. The temperatures in the Caribbean and Mexico are not too hot, and it’s not overly rainy. The ships themselves aren’t too crowded because many kids are still in school and just had off for winter break. On top of that, I’m from the North East, where the weather is gross, snowy, and cold, so beautiful blue waters and tropical breezes provide much-needed relief from the chilliness. For this cruise specifically, I preferred January or early February because of other social engagements already on my calendar. That really narrowed down the field; from the mainstream cruise lines, only 7 ships were going to sail 3 – 5 day itineraries in this time frame.

Table with possible January Cruise Dates

Narrowing down the departure port

For the seven ships I was looking at, I had 3 possible departure ports; Galveston, Miami, and Orlando. Galveston and Orlando are both about 45 minutes from the airport, which can add up to a rather pricey uber/taxi ride. On top of that, I didn’t want to add another 2 hours of travel to get to the ship and back if it was just a weekend trip. Miami, on the other hand, seems to be made for cruises. The port is so easy and convenient to get to from the airport, and there are tons of hotels. The hotels can get pricey, and the traffic can be awful if you book a hotel in South Beach, but if you stay in the less busy Brickell district or by the airport, it’s much more affordable.

Which ports of call to visit?

Map of Caribbean cruise ports

Looking at the ports these ships were sailing to, I had a few options. If possible, I was trying to avoid a cruise to Nassau. I have nothing against the port, but I’ve been there 5 times already, and there just wasn’t anything on my bucket list to do there. So I looked at which other ports were available.

The first that caught my eye was Cozumel. I’ve been there twice, and both times I was thrilled with the beautiful warm waters and white sands. Even though I’d been a couple of times before, there were easily 4 or 5 excursions I still had on my to-do list. Although I already have a cruise visiting Cozumel in March 2023 on the books, this trip would allow me to try another excursion. I’ve always wanted to try Xcaret Park in Cozumel after my family visited and loved it on our first ever cruise.

I also saw Key West on the list, which I’ve always wanted to visit but had a hard time validating the 2+ hour drive from the airport to the town. Everyone who has been has raved about it, though. Unfortunately, Key West recently voted to stop allowing cruise ships. It was later overturned, but it’s still being appealed; the whole thing is very “iffy” if a ship can even visit the port.

Perfect Day at CocoCay

Another destination on the list of possibilities was Perfect Day at CocoCay . Perfect Day is Royal Caribbean’s private island that they completely redid. It has a huge water park with the largest water slide in North America, the largest pool in the Caribbean, several different beaches, and lots of included food. It would be a great way to spend a relaxing day on a weekend cruise; it wouldn’t require any planning or excursion, just step off the ship and enjoy. I could easily spend a few days on that island.

Choosing the cruise ship

Now that I had narrowed down the time of year, the Miami departure port, and the ports I’d be willing to sail to, my list was narrowed down to 3 ships; Norwegian Joy, Royal Caribbean Freedom of the Seas, and Carnival Sunrise.

Norwegian Joy

carnival 2 day cruise weekend getaways

The Norwegian Joy is a beautiful ship, and I would have been happy to sail on it. It was built in 2017 and heavily refurbished in 2019 when it was removed from the Asian market and relocated to North America. It has tons of restaurants, activities, and space to relax. However, the biggest thing that ruled out this ship was the cost. It was 3 times more expensive than the Carnival and Royal Caribbean options. For a week-long cruise, maybe I could validate that cost, but not a weekend cruise.

Royal Caribbean Freedom of the Seas

carnival 2 day cruise weekend getaways

The Freedom of the Seas was another solid contender. It was initially built in 2006, but in 2020 it was “amplified,” which means Royal Caribbean spent millions refurbishing the ship and adding new attractions. It has quite a few restaurants and fun activities like a climbing wall, Flow Rider, ice skating, and laser tag. One thing I didn’t like was that less than 50% of the dining options are included on Freedom of the Seas; the rest are all additional charge venues. Then again, for a short cruise, I don’t think that’d be a huge problem.

Carnival Sunrise

Carnival Sunrise cruise ship at sea

Lastly, I had the Carnival Sunrise . To be honest, that ship wasn’t high on my list of ships. The Carnival Sunrise technically debuted in 2019, but in reality, the ship was in service before as the Carnival Triumph. It went through a $200 million dollar retrofit that was so extensive, Carnival saw fit to rename the ship. It’s part of the Sunshine-class of ships which all were renovated Carnival ships with name transformations. Anecdotal reports from other cruisers have always been mediocre for the Destiny/Sunshine class ships. While the Dream-class, Vista-class, and Spirit-class have die-hard fans, you rarely find someone so passionate about the Sunshine class ships.

Then I thought about it, did it have what I love on a Carnival cruise? Free, adults-only Serenity area ? Check. Guy’s Burgers ? Check. Guy’s Pig and Anchor BBQ on sea days? Check. Alchemy Bar? Check. It even had a ropes course with a plank which I would love to try (I’m saying this while safely on the ground, talk to me again when I’m hanging 100′ over the water). For a short, 4-day cruise, I think it’d have everything I needed.

Ropes course on Carnival Sunrise Cruise Ship at Sunset

Really, it was neck and neck between the Freedom of the Seas and the Sunrise until I took cost into account. The two cruises were about the same price, but the Freedom of the Seas was a 3-day cruise, and the Sunrise was a 4-day cruise. On top of that, Carnival offered a $200 onboard credit that made it considerably cheaper. This credit was a special promotion I received from Carnival because I sailed with them before. Unfortunately, even though I have sailed Royal Caribbean before, they offered me no discount or promotion for booking another cruise with them. I know some frequent cruisers score good deals with Royal Caribbean, but apparently, I’m not one of them.

With all that taken into account, I picked my weekend cruise, the Carnival Sunrise, leaving from Miami and going to Key West and Cozumel.

Picking a cabin on the Carnival Sunshine

The work wasn’t done yet; I now had to book my room. Usually, I’m a balcony cabin kind of guy. I love waking up in the morning and walking out onto the balcony, feeling the fresh air and looking at the ocean passing by. Then, after a day of excursions, I love getting back to my room and staring off into the horizon through the large windows. To me, it’s a big part of my cruise experience.

king bed in interior cabin on the Carnival Sunrise

That view comes with a tradeoff, though, and that’s the price. In this case, a balcony room was 50% more than an interior room. Since this trip would just be a weekend getaway, I decided to book an interior cabin to save some money. I tried to rationalize my decision. I’ve stayed in tiny and “efficient” hotel rooms over the years, and they all worked out fine, so why wouldn’t it be good on a cruise ship? The cabin looks quant, and I can’t imagine having four people in one of these, but for two people for a short cruise, it could work.

Going for the cheapest room possible, I looked for a standard interior room on deck 1. There was only one cabin left that didn’t have a connecting door, so I was able to grab that. Connecting rooms may be great for families, but they can have extra noise from the cabin next door if they don’t know the people there.

60 days until my cruise

I finished booking, and my Carnival account was immediately updated with the cruise. I was surprised to see the 60-day countdown; I’ve never booked a cruise that close to the sail date. It’s nice to not have so much time, where I just constantly look at deck plans, dining menus, and excursion lists to plan what I’ll do.

Be on the lookout for my live blog from the cruise ship. I have a lot of questions I’ll try to answer. How was the weekend cruise atmosphere? Was it much more party-focused than a 7-day cruise? Did we stop in Key West? How was the Carnival Sunrise? I’ll let you know.

5 Affordable Cruise Vacations to Book — Plus How to Find the Best Deals

Here's what you need to know to save money on your next cruise.

Best Affordable Cruise Lines

How to find the best cruise deals, tips for saving money while on board.

Cruising has become increasingly popular in recent years, and it’s easy to see why. This form of travel is incredibly convenient (read: no need to pack and unpack), and everything you need can be found right on board — ultimately taking the stress out of trip planning. Plus, with hundreds of ships at sea across dozens of lines, there’s a cruise out here for every type of traveler. Fortunately, cruising doesn’t have to cost a small fortune, and many budget-conscious travelers may opt to set sail for their next trip. Below, we’ve rounded up the best cruise lines offering affordable fares coupled with value-packed inclusions to stretch your dollar further. We’ve also tapped some expert cruise specialists to share their top tips and tricks to help you save money both on and off the ship.

Here's everything you need to know to book an affordable cruise vacation.

Virgin Voyages

Courtesy of Virgin Voyages

This adults-only cruise line from Richard Branson — which also happens to be a Travel + Leisure World’s Best Award winner — offers excellent value. In fact, according to T+L A-list cruise advisor and Q Cruise + Travel founder and president Rob Clabbers, Virgin Voyages fares “include more than on most mainstream large-ship cruise lines.” For example, he says, “Virgin fares include internet access, gratuities, all meals — there are no cover charges for its restaurants that on most other lines would be considered specialty restaurants.” Beverages like soft drinks, coffee, and tea are also included, as are snacks, mezze at the aft terrace, and group workout classes. Best of all, there are no pricey beverage packages. “Instead,” says Clabbers, cruisers — or, as Virgin calls them, sailors — can buy their own reasonably priced drinks (think: beers from $6, $10 cocktails, and wines by the glass under $11) a la carte. Additionally, with some promotions , the cruise line throws in a “ bar tab ” credit that can be used towards drinks.

Princess Cruises

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

Another World’s Best Award winner — and WBA Hall of Fame Honoree, no less — this fan-favorite ocean line is renowned for refined ships, serene ambiance, and exceptional service. Moreover, per Clabbers, passengers can choose from “optional packages to help customize a passenger’s trip that provide savings over buying things separately.” For an extra $60 per day, consider Princess Plus, which offers perks like Wi-Fi for one device per guest, gratuities, fitness classes (two per sailing), and beverages like bottled water, specialty coffee, soft drinks, and juice. Alternatively, for $80 per day, passengers can spring on the Princess Premier package, which features the same beverages plus specialty dining (two per sailing), unlimited fitness classes, premium desserts, reserved theater seating, and Wi-Fi (four devices per guest).

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line is a favorite among families of all ages for its over-the-top entertainment and activities (think: go-karting, Broadway-caliber productions, and so on). “While Norwegian Cruise Line may price slightly higher than some of its competitors, you need to consider the Free at Sea package,” says travel advisor Jennifer Travis of Marvelous Mouse Travels . She goes on to describe the promotion as a “game-changer when it comes to cruising” since it includes perks like a “free open bar (up to $1,400 in savings), free specialty dining (up to $180 in savings), free Wi-Fi (up to $200 in savings), and a $50 discount on excursions.” Other Free at Sea perks include 70 percent off second guests, free third and fourth guests (on select dates), and free airfare (per the cruise line’s website: “ Pay airfare for one guest, and you'll automatically lock in roundtrip flights for two ”). Also, you can’t go wrong with the Free at Sea Plus package, which includes a wider selection of beverages, more specialty dining, unlimited Wi-Fi, and additional shore excursion credits. Before booking, be sure to check the line’s full selection of deals , which run the gamut from half-off deposits to $150 cruise credits and more.

Royal Caribbean

Courtesy of Royal Caribbean

Zip lines, water slides, surfing simulators, ice skating, rock climbing walls: Find all this and more aboard (most) Royal Caribbean ships — and, best of all, they’re complimentary! Ideal for fun- and adventure-loving travelers of all ages — read: kids and kids-at-heart alike — it’s pretty much impossible to be bored while cruising on this World’s Best Award-winning mega-ship line . Additionally, according to Travis, Royal Caribbean “offers some of the best short itineraries,” some of which clock in at under $200 per person for two-night sailings. Longer itineraries, including a seven-night Bahamas sailing aboard one of the line’s newest ships, Odyssey of the Seas , clock in at under $600 per person. The line also offers an abundance of deals , including up to $600 off sailings, 60 percent off second guests, and more.

Carnival Cruise Line

Courtesy of Carnival Cruises

“ Carnival Cruise Line is known for its competitive pricing without cutting back on the onboard activities or various dining options, thus making them an attractive option to budget-conscious cruisers,” explains Travis. For example, many itineraries, including a four-night Bahamas cruise from Miami , clock in at just over $150 per person. Additionally, says the travel advisor, “Carnival sails to a wide variety of destinations from so many local ports that you almost do not need to fly to your cruise ship anymore, which is another huge savings given the cost (and stress) flights can add to any vacation.” Keep an eye out for frequent flash sales for even more savings.

Booking early is an easy way to save on your next cruise vacation . “Typically,” says Travis, “the best pricing on a cruise is when the schedule is first released.” And, while you could wait for a last-minute deal, “you may not get the room category that you want.” Similarly, Clabbers says that flexibility is key when it comes to finding — and scoring — the best cruise deals . For example, he previously told T+L that if you are “very flexible and are looking for a standard room on a large ship on an itinerary that repeats week after week, you are more likely to find a promotional fare.”

Conversely, giving up some of that flexibility sometimes pays off. According to Clabbers, select cruise lines will offer lower fares to those who opt for a nonrefundable deposit instead of a refundable one. Finally, you may also consider cruising in shoulder season or even low season. Sure, the weather won’t be perfect, but the fewer crowds and cheaper fares more than make up for that, especially if you’re on a budget.

While your tab can quickly rack up once on board, there are several savvy ways to save money. For one, consider bringing your own booze. According to Travis, “Many cruise lines allow their guests to bring a specific amount of alcohol or nonalcoholic beverages onboard the ships, which can help save you money while you are on the ship.” Additionally, Michele Benard , another travel advisor at Marvelous Mouse Travels, advises packing your own necessities from home — like Advil, Tums,  motion sickness medicine, and after-sun lotion — as opposed to buying them on board at a much higher price. You’ll also want to skip the souvenirs at the onboard gift shop, which tend to be more expensive than those you’d find in port.

Benard also recommends taking advantage of “all the free activities on the cruise ships,” which can include everything from water slides to trivia game shows. Pro tip: “Stay onboard during a port day, and the lines won’t be as long.” On a similar note, spa treatments tend to be less expensive on port days, so those craving some R&R — that is, sans breaking the bank — may consider booking a service during this time.

Finally, says Clabbers, save money on your next cruise by enlisting the help of an onboard cruise consultant to select your next sailing. “You will typically receive an onboard credit or savings on your next cruise, and your own travel advisor will be alerted so they can help you plan your vacation.”

Family’s $15k carnival cruise vacation canceled just 2 days prior, without their knowledge, after sharing booking number on facebook.

A Kentucky family’s $15,000 Carnival Cruise vacation they had been planning for a year was canceled just two days before the ship was set to sail after they accidentally shared their booking number online in a case of identity theft.

Tiffany Banks was devastated to learn that her trip aboard the Carnival Celebration ship with her husband and their four kids was canceled without her knowledge the day before the family was going to fly to Florida to leave on the boat.

Banks said in a series of TikTok videos that she had no idea their vacation, for which they had already paid in full, was trashed until she got an email about off-ship excursion cancellations and called to investigate.

Tiffany Banks

A Carnival customer service representative told her that she had canceled her $12,000 reservation for the ship’s largest room — the Excel Presidential Suite — through the online system.

The mom and nurse practitioner said she went into “a full-blown panic” and she and her four kids were all in tears.

“We have nearly $15,000 tied up in for this vacation including excursions. The room itself was I think $12,000 or $13,000, and then we’ve got a few grand tied up in excursions, and actually with almost $2,000 for flights,” she said in a May 12 TikTok video.

Banks said she never canceled the trip and wondered if it was a system glitch.

Carnival said the room they had booked was now reserved by another customer and offered the family two interior rooms — the cheapest on the ship — instead, but the mom did not feel it was an adequate replacement.

Carnival also refused to offer a full refund as its cancellation policy states that no money will be returned within 15 days of the cruise date.

Banks said in a series of TikTok videos that she had no idea their vacation, for which they had already paid in full, was trashed until she got an email about off-ship excursion cancellations and called to investigate.

The family flew to Miami and tried to board the ship anyway, hoping for a last-minute solution, but were unable to get on and the ship sailed off without them, Banks said in a teary follow-up video.

They instead stayed at an Airbnb in the Sunshine State, hoping to make the best of their change of plans while the mom shared frustrating updates on TikTok.

In one clip, she responded to “haters” who accused her of hiding things or not sharing the full story.

“I’m an open book. I talk too much. I give out too much information — that’s just me naturally,” she said in remarks that would become an ironic prediction of what was to come in the saga.

A Carnival customer service representative told her that she had canceled her $12,000 reservation for the ship's largest room -- the Excel Presidential Suite -- through the online system.

A few days later, Carnival called Banks back with an explanation of how her long-awaited cruise trip was canned.

The cruise line told Banks that she was the “victim of a form of identity theft” but that there was no security breach on Carnival’s part, according to a recording of the call she shared on TikTok.

Banks and her husband accidentally shared their cruise booking reference number when posting a screenshot of an email with the countdown to their vacation on Facebook a few weeks out, according to the clip.

The family flew to Miami and tried to board the ship anyways, hoping for a last-minute solution, but were unable to get on and the ship sailed off without them, Banks said in a teary follow-up video.

The same day they posted the booking number on Facebook, someone created an online Carnival account and added the number to their profile.

Then, 48 hours before the cruise sail date, the person canceled the family’s entire cabin booking, the Carnival rep told Banks in the recording.

Banks said Carnival told her that it believes the IP address of the person who canceled was in British Columbia but it was unable to get an identity of the fraudster.

The company offered her future cruise credit for $10,404 contingent on the mom posting on social media “something to the effect of Carnival has now resolved the issue.”

But Banks said she wasn’t interested and questioned the ease with which someone was able to take over her booking with no verification process.

“We’re not sailing with Carnival ever again,” she said.

The Post reached out to Carnival but did not immediately receive a response.

Cruise travelers who waited months for their vacations were excited for the return of ships to Baltimore over Memorial Day weekend.

The embarkations are the first cruise ships to depart Baltimore since the March 26 collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge , which closed the main channel.

"This is just a wonderful day for us. It's been a wonderful weekend and we just can't thank everybody for making this happen to get us cruises back in Baltimore," said Cynthia Burman, the deputy director for business development and cruises for the Port of Baltimore.

"We are so happy, and it's probably one of the most visible signs that everybody can see. Cruise is back. Baltimore is back. Royal and Carnival, they're looking forward to being able to engage their itineraries out of Baltimore -- not only this weekend, but well into the future," Jonathan Daniels, the executive director of the Maryland Port Administration, told 11 News on Saturday.

The Key Bridge collapse forced the cruise lines to temporarily move ships to Norfolk, Virginia. The Carnival Legend was supposed to return to Baltimore in April but was rerouted to Norfolk, where Carnival provided buses back to Baltimore.

On Saturday, Royal Caribbean's Vision of the Seas returned to and departed from Baltimore for a five-day cruise to the Bahamas.

"It's excitement, you know, it's a great day for Baltimore, a great day for the community here, a great day for Royal Caribbean, as well, and we're looking forward to continue cruising out of Baltimore," Mise Tevsic, the captain of the Vision of the Seas, told 11 News on Saturday.

Cruisers were excited to get on board for trips they've planned for months.

"It's a relief. I mean, we spent weeks wondering and feeling a little bit guilty because we're wondering how it will work for us, knowing everything there were doing (to clear the Dali container ship ), so it was a relief that, OK, the port is back, all these people are back at work," John Carney, a Royal Caribbean cruiser, told 11 News on Saturday.

The Carnival Pride returned Sunday to Baltimore after setting sail from Norfolk. The Pride then left Baltimore for a 14-day cruise to Greenland.

"We're very thankful to the city and the port of Baltimore, as well as the first responders that helped with all the operation, and we're very happy to be back here on a beautiful sunny day," said Moises Clarena, Carnival's regional manager. "We weren't sure how long it was going to take originally, but with all everybody involved, they were able to make it happen quickly."

Carnival said the Pride will then continue its previously planned sailings, currently scheduled into the spring of 2026.

"Every vessel that calls this port, you're looking at a million dollars of economic impact. Last year, we handled 109 vessels -- $109 million worth of economic impact, so it's a very significant impact to the port and community, it's a significant part of the hospitality and tourism spectrum that makes Baltimore so special," Daniels said.

Carnival is taking on Royal Caribbean with its own $600 million private resort — see Celebration Key's planned features

  • Carnival Cruise Line is set to launch its new private destination, Celebration Key , in 2025.
  • The $600 million project has amenities similar to Royal Caribbean's private island.
  • Carnival is "clearly following Royal Caribbean's footsteps," one analyst told Business Insider.

Insider Today

Step aside, CocoCay. Royal Caribbean's private island could soon face some serious competition.

About 140 miles east of Miami, Royal Caribbean's Perfect Day at CocoCay receives thousands of eager families virtually every day of the year, drawn to the private Caribbean island's irresistible waterpark, beach clubs, and family-friendly amenities.

The tropical destination has become a massive hit with the cruise line's guests. And it seems Carnival, which also targets cruising families, wants a slice of its competitor's winning pie.

Carnival already operates its own private island, Half Moon Cay.

carnival 2 day cruise weekend getaways

But what's better than one exclusive port? Two of them.

The cruise giant is now building another destination just for its guests: Celebration Key, a mile-long resort-like getaway on Grand Bahama Island .

The $600 million project, Carnival Corp's largest, is set to open in 2025 — a sign that the company is "clearly following Royal Caribbean's footsteps," Patrick Scholes, lodging and leisure research analyst at Truist Securities, told Business Insider in March.

Carnival’s promises for its private destination might sound familiar.

carnival 2 day cruise weekend getaways

Royal Caribbean's private island has a waterpark with 14 slides and children's play areas.

Similarly, according to Carnival's recent announcement, Celebration Key will have a large, family-friendly freshwater lagoon with two 350-foot-long waterslides and a children's water playground.

It's a scaled-back version of CocoCay's popular feature — for now. Looking ahead, Carnival said it plans to build a waterpark and zipline course, too.

Celebration Key would also offer amenities like ping-pong, basketball, and volleyball.

carnival 2 day cruise weekend getaways

As you might've guessed, these activities are also available on Royal Caribbean's island as well.

Looking to escape the sound of screaming children? Carnival says Celebration Key will have a separate adult-only section, again with frills reminiscent of CocoCay's recently opened pool club (as in, a swim-up pool bar, a DJ, and no kids in sight).

It wouldn’t be a cruise-owned private island without up-charged amenities.

carnival 2 day cruise weekend getaways

Travelers at Perfect Day at CocoCay can splurge on private beach clubs, cabanas, shopping, food, and alcohol.

The same goes for Celebration Key. In fact, "You'd be surprised at how much people are willing to pay to rent cabanas for the day," Josh Weinstein, president and CEO of Carnival Corp, told investors in late March.

Like CocoCay, Carnival expects its private destination to be a big money maker with increased ticket revenue and "incremental in-port spending," Weinstein said. Plus, it'll be near Florida's major cruise ports, allowing Carnival to save money on fuel — another major benefit to owning private Caribbean properties.

Celebration Key is already included in over 500 of Carnival’s itineraries across 18 ships.

carnival 2 day cruise weekend getaways

We're still a year from its debut, but that's not stopping the company from planning the expansion of its upcoming property.

Carnival said it'll spend $100 million extending Celebration Key's pier, which, when completed in 2026, will allow it to accommodate four of Carnival's largest cruise ships.

By 2028, the cruise line says the destination will be able to accommodate 4 million travelers annually.
