car tour cotswolds

The Day in the Cotswolds Tour will provide an authentic experience showcasing the highlights of the region in one unforgettable day. From learning about the area’s history, sampling the local cuisine and exploring the towns and villages, our goal is to ensure we make the most of your time with us. We have carefully created the tour to enable you to spend as little time as possible in the car. In fact approximately only 1 hour 45 minutes out of a 7-8 hour day. You will be able to walk about at your own pace, breathe the fresh country air and feel the ancient footpaths beneath your feet. If you have any particular passions, interests or requests, we will do our best to incorporate them in the tour.

We want this to be your tour and conducted at a pace that suits you. We do have a timed itinerary which, if adhered to, will allow seeing all the locations however, Johnnie will let you to lead the pace so if you want to stay a little longer or see just a bit more at a particular location we can accommodate your wishes. If we spend longer in the various sites, some of those later in the day will possibly have to be left for when you next visit the Cotswolds, we’re sure you’ll want to come back!

BROADWAY TOWER

Set on top of the beautiful Cotswold escarpment, Broadway tower is an iconic landmark. Over 200 years old, the tower was the brain child of Capability Brown and built for the then countess of Coventry to be seen from her house 22 miles (35km)away. It provides the most magnificent views of a 62 mile (100km) radius and as many as 16 Counties.

Although Chipping Campden has ancient Stone Age and Roman origins, it was really founded in the Medieval era. The wealth of the wool trade saw the building of St James Church, one of the finest in the Cotswolds, and many impressive buildings you can still see today. As one of the best preserved and most historically important towns, it is frequently described as the ‘jewel in the crown of the Cotswolds’.

The village centres around its long, wide high street or ‘broad-way’ and remains as it has done for centuries. It was once a prominent stage coach stop on the route between Worcester and London. More recently it attracted famous artists, designers and writers such as JM Barrie, John Singer Sargent and Edward Elgar. Today it has many wonderful cafes, restaurants and pubs, a fine delicatessen and some rather special shops and boutiques.

BOURTON-ON-THE-WATER

Known as “Venice of the Cotswolds” picturesque Bourton on the Water is one of the most famous locations in the Cotswolds. Here 18th century stone bridges cross the river Windrush as it flows through the centre of the honey coloured village. There are a great number of pubs, cafes, bakeries, and souvenir shops.

LOWER SLAUGHTER

This quaint and Romantic village sits on either side of the river Eye and is known for its unspoilt stone cottages and picture perfect watermill. There are stone footbridges and flower filled gardens. Very little building has taken place here for over 100 years so it really is like stepping back in time.

STOW-ON-THE-WOLD

Stow on the Wold has an impressively large square where once sheep markets took place.  The narrow alleys and roads leading from the square were to enable the counting and control  huge flocks. These streets were said to run with blood during the last battle of the English Civil war. Here you will find The Porch House, the oldest inn in England dating from 947 AD, and the Yew tree door said to be the inspiration for Tolkien’s entrance to Moria.

Johnnie will collect you from the train station at Moreton in Marsh or your accommodation (by prior arrangement, please see booking form). The tour will include visits to Blockley, Chipping Campden, Broadway Tower, Snowshill, Broadway with a break for lunch, Lower Slaughter, Bourton on the water and Stow on the Wold before returning to Moreton Station or your accommodation. There will be other stops at various view points along the way.

If you have any special requests or requirements please email us before booking.

Please note that the price of the tour does not include any food or drinks. Bottles of water will be provided and you will have the use of umbrellas if you do not wish to bring your own.

Driving the Cotswolds Romantic Road: 2-day Cotswold road trip itinerary

By Author Lucy Dodsworth

Posted on Last updated: 22 February 2024

Take a two-day driving tour along the scenic roads of the Cotswolds on this romantic road trip. The Cotswolds Romantic Road is one of the Great British Drives, and includes some of the best-known and most beautiful Cotswold towns and villages, churches, country houses and gardens.

The Cotswolds Romantic Road is made up of two one-day circular driving routes, both starting in the Regency town of Cheltenham. The first loop runs through the north of the Cotswolds via Broadway, Chipping Campden, Stow-on-the-Wold and Bourton-on-the-Water. And the second loops east from Cheltenham through Northleach, Burford, Lechlade, Bibury, Cirencester and Painswick.

The Cotswolds Romantic Road through Broadway

The route includes a mix of famous and lesser-known destinations, so you can tailor the stops to suit what you want to see – whether you want to focus on the big names or get off the beaten track. We’ve suggested places to stop off along the route in the itineraries below to help plan your trip.

The distances covered each day aren’t that big, but there’s a lot to see so factor in plenty of time for sightseeing (and food, drink and shopping) stops. This Cotswolds Romantic Road itinerary covers two days, but you could also spread it over a longer time period and make more stops.

Bridge over the River Eye in Lower Slaughter

However you choose to drive it, the Cotswolds Romantic Road is a great way to see some of the highlights and hidden gems of the Cotswolds by car. Or if you’d rather not drive, we also have a series of guides which show you how to explore the Cotswolds by public transport .

If you don’t want to organise the trip yourself, you can also book a Romantic Road package with Compass Holidays , who organise accommodation, provide maps and GPS directions, and can also book car hire (or even a chauffeur-driven car) for you.

Tips for driving the Cotswolds Romantic Road

Cotswold roads are often narrow and may have just one lane. So take it slowly and be prepared to stop. If you need to pass a car going in the opposite direction, there are usually passing places on single-lane roads, but if not you may have to pull onto the verge to let them go by.

If you want to hire a car in Cheltenham, both Midlands Vehicle Rental and Enterprise car hire’s offices are within 15–20 minutes’ walk of Cheltenham train station. Booking in advance is advised – as is hiring the smallest car you need to make it easier to manoeuvre and park.

Country roads through Snowshill on the Cotswolds Romantic Road

Parking can be difficult in the busiest Cotswold towns and villages, especially in summer and at weekends. Our locals’ guides give details of parking options in the main destinations.

There aren’t always many signposts in the Cotswolds so it’s useful to have a GPS or sat nav to help you navigate (though beware they usually show you the shortest way rather than the scenic route used in these itineraries). And a print map * is a good backup as mobile signal can be patchy.

Cotswolds Romantic Road day 1

The first day of the Cotswolds Romantic Road trip focuses on the north of the Cotswolds, mainly travelling on smaller, quieter B roads. The day’s highlights include Sudeley Castle, the pretty villages of Stanton and Snowshill, Broadway and its tower, Chipping Campden, Father Brown filming location Blockley, Stow-on-the-Wold, Bourton-on-the-Water and the Slaughters.

Day 1 covers approximately 62.5 miles and if you drive it straight through it would take 2.5–3 hours. But that only includes driving time so allow a full day to make stops along the route.

Cotswolds Romantic Road day 1 map of the route

Day 1 route

The route starts by heading northeast out of Cheltenham, passing through Prestbury and joining the B4632 as it climbs up Cleeve Hill. Cleeve Hill is the highest point in the Cotswolds, and if you want to admire the views you can stop off at the Quarry Car Park (signposted Cleeve Hill Golf Club) then take a short walk onto Cleeve Common following the Cotswold Way signs.

Continue along the B4632 into Winchcombe , which dates from the Saxon period. This is where you’ll find 15th-century Sudeley Castle. It was once home to Henry VIII’s last wife Katherine Parr, who’s buried in St Mary’s Church in the grounds. You can take a look around some of the castle rooms, visit an exhibition about its history and explore its 10 different gardens.

Sudeley Castle on the Cotswolds Romantic Road

Stay on the B4632 as far as Toddington, then turn right onto the B4077 towards Stanway . This tiny village is one of the area’s lesser-known scenic spots. Stanway House is known for its 300-foot-high fountain, which is open to the public on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons in summer.

Follow Stanway Road north through Stanton , which is one of our favourite Cotswold villages, with its vintage lanterns and half-timbered and Cotswold stone buildings draped in flowers.

Cottages in Stanton village in the Costwolds

Rejoin the B4632 north of Stanton and follow it as far as Broadway . The ‘Jewel of the Cotswolds’, Broadway has great shops, cafés and restaurants – grab a coffee from the colourful Broadway Deli and take a walk along the High Street to admire its 16th- and 17th-century buildings. There’s also the Gordon Russell Design Museum and Broadway Museum and Art Gallery to visit.

Leave Broadway along Snowshill Road to the south. At Snowshill you can stop and visit Snowshill Manor with its quirky collection of curios and Arts and Crafts gardens. Then head east towards Cotswold Lavender , whose colourful fields are open to the public each summer.

The Cotswold Lavender fields

After the lavender fields, follow Buckle Street past the Broadway Tower , a fairytale folly that was once an artists’ retreat, located at the second highest point of the Cotswolds. You can stop to admire views over 16 counties, climb the tower or visit the nuclear bunker hidden beneath it.

Carry on along Buckle Street until you reach the B4632, then turn right and drive through Weston Subedge. Turn right onto the B4035 which runs through Ashton Subedge to Chipping Campden . This former wool town has a lovely High Street to explore. You can find out more about the Arts and Crafts movement at the Court Barn Museum and see artisans at work in the Old Silk Mill.

Chipping Campden's Market Hall

Head south of Chipping Campden through Broad Campden , which has some charming thatched cottages, and along Park Street into Blockley . Blockley was once a centre of the silk milling industry but is now better known to fans of BBC TV series Father Brown as Kembleford. You can see filming locations from the show around the village, including the church and vicarage.

Drive south from Blockley along the B4479, then turn left when you reach the A44, driving through Bourton on the Hill towards Moreton-in-Marsh . Garden lovers might want to make a stop at either Batsford Arboretum or Bourton House Garden on the way into Moreton. There’s also the Wellington Aviation Museum on the edge of town, and a popular Tuesday market.

Batsford Arboretum in autumn

Turn right onto the A429, also known as the Fosse Way Roman road, which runs through Moreton-in-Marsh to Stow-on-the-Wold . Hilltop Stow is a great place to stop for lunch, with plenty of cafés, pubs and restaurants to choose from, including Huffkins Bakery, Cotswold Baguettes and The Porch House. And don’t miss visiting Edward’s Church with its famous Yew Tree Door.

Go right on the B4068 from Stow-on-the-Wold as far as Lower Swell , then turn left and keep left at the next two junctions on your way to Lower Slaughter . The last stretch runs along Copsehill Road, which was once voted the most romantic street in England. There are historic cottages and stone bridges across the River Eye to see – plus the cosy Slaughters Country Inn.

Lower Slaughter

The next stop is Upper Slaughter , a mile away along Becky Hill. You can also walk there – it takes 20 minutes each way on an easy path along the river then across fields.

Backtrack to Lower Slaughter, then rejoin the A429 for the short drive into Bourton-on-the-Water . Bourton is one of the most popular Cotswold villages, in a scenic setting along the shallow River Windrush. There’s lots to see including the Model Village, Cotswold Motoring Museum, Birdland and the Dragonfly Maze – as well as plenty of waterside pubs and tearooms.

The River Windrush in Bourton-on-the-Water

Drive through Bourton, crossing the A429 and driving along Buckle Street before turning left onto the B4068. You pass through the village of Naunton then merge onto the A436 and follow this to Andoversford. Then turn right onto the A40 which runs into the centre of Cheltenham.

If you have time to spare there’s lots to do in Cheltenham , including the Wilson Art Gallery and Museum, Holst Victorian House, Pittville Pump Room and independent shopping in Montpellier and the Suffolks. There are also some fantastic places to eat – our favourites include Lumiere for a special occasion, Petit Coco for French food, Kibou for sushi and Gallimores Kitchen.

Cotswolds Romantic Road day 2

The second day on the Cotswolds Romantic Road takes us east of Cheltenham and across the border from Gloucestershire into Oxfordshire. Highlights of today’s Cotswold road trip itinerary include Chedworth Roman Villa, Burford and the villages along the Windrush Valley, Lechlade-on-Thames, picturesque Bibury, Cirencester and Painswick with its church and Rococo Garden.

Day two covers approximately 87 miles and would take 3.5 hours to drive straight through.

Cotswolds Romantic Road day 2 map of the route

Day 2 route

Start by taking the A40 southeast of Cheltenham, turning off at Dowdeswell and continuing on along quiet, country roads to the village of Withington on the banks of the River Coln. Look out for stables along the way – this area is home to some of the Cotswolds’ top horse trainers.

Follow King’s Head Lane out of Withington and through Cassey Compton until you reach the entrance to Chedworth Roman Villa . The villa was one of the largest and grandest Roman villas in Britain, and dates from the 4th century with ornate mosaics, underfloor heating and bathhouses. It’s now run by the National Trust and visitors can explore the site and museum.

Chedworth Roman Villa in the Cotswolds

Head east from the Roman villa through Yarnworth, merging onto the A429 and then turning off into Northleach . Northleach was an important wool town and has some lovely half-timbered buildings as well as the Church of St Peter and St Paul – known as the ‘Cathedral of the Cotswolds’. You can also stop for a cup of tea at the town’s former Old Prison, which is now a café.

Go east through Northleach, crossing Farmington Road and driving through the village of Farmington . The road then winds its way along the Sherbourne Brook and then the River Windrush. You drive through a series of small villages including Windrush and Taynton .

Thatched cottage in Taynton in the Windrush Valley on the Cotswolds Romantic Road

When you reach a roundabout on the edge of Burford , turn right onto the High Street. The road crosses an arched bridge over the River Windrush then climbs uphill through the town towards Burford Hill, lined with historic buildings. You can visit the Tolsey Museum of local history, shop for antiques and admire the stained glass windows in the Church of St John the Baptist.

Next backtrack to the roundabout and turn right onto the A361. Turn off to the right at Fulbrook and follow Beech Grove towards Swinbrook . The village pub the Swan Inn was once owned by Deborah Mitford – the late Duchess of Devonshire and youngest of the Mitford sisters.

Historic buildings on Burford Hill

Drive on into Asthall , another village with a Mitford connection – you can see the Jacobean Manor House where the family once lived next to St Peter’s Church. Then head south and turn right onto the A40, following it as far as Burford Garden Centre then turning left onto the A361.

Leaving the official Cotswold boundary behind you, drive south towards Lechlade-on-Thames . On the way you pass the Cotswold Wildlife Park and Gardens, where you can stop off to see over 250 different species of animals including rhinos, giraffes, leopards and lions.

The Mitfords' former house in Asthall on the Cotswolds Romantic Road

Lechlade lies on the banks of the River Thames, and you can take a boat trip on the river or hire a kayak or paddleboard – or stay dry with a walk along a stretch of the Thames Path. Then turn right onto the A417 which passes the Cotswold Water Park lakes on its way towards Fairford.

Fairford was a coaching stop on the route between London and Gloucester, and many of its historic buildings were originally built as inns for travellers. There’s also St Mary’s Church which has fine medieval stained glass windows, and a traditional market every Wednesday.

Lechlade's Halfpenny Bridge on the Coswolds Romantic Road route

From Fairford, drive north along Fairford Road, following the River Coln to Coln St Aldwyns . Then continue along the Salt Way to Bibury . Bibury is best known for the quaint stone weavers’ cottages on Arlington Row but there are also walks across the water meadows and the Trout Farm. You can try local trout in their café or have lunch at The Swan or Catherine Wheel.

Turn left onto the B4425, which passes through Barnsley – where you’ll find The Boot pub and Barnsley House hotel – on its way to Cirencester , ‘Capital of the Cotswolds’. Cirencester was an important Roman town and you can learn more at the Corinium Museum and Roman amphitheatre, as well as browsing crafts by local artisans at the New Brewery Arts centre.

Cirencester’s Corinium Museum

After leaving Cirencester, head west, turning off onto the A419 Stroud Road before turning off again onto the smaller road which runs through the villages of Sapperton and Bisley on its way to Painswick . You can follow Painswick’s heritage trail, count the 99 yew trees around St Mary’s Church, visit the Rococo Gardens, or have a delicious afternoon tea at The Painswick.

Then finally end your trip on the Cotswold Romantic Road by driving along the A46 past Painswick Beacon and Cooper’s Hill – where daredevil competitors take part in the annual cheese-rolling competitions each May – before arriving back into the south of Cheltenham.

St Mary's Church in Painswick

Where to stay in Cheltenham

Cheltenham makes a convenient base for driving the Cotswolds Romantic Road, and has a good selection of places to stay, eat and drink. Our favourite accommodation options include:

The Queens Hotel * is right at the heart of Cheltenham, overlooking Imperial Gardens. It was one of Britain’s first purpose-built hotels when it opened in 1838 and has lots of period features. There are 84 bedrooms spread over three floors, Victoria’s restaurant and the Gold Cup Bar.

No 38 The Park * is an elegant Regency townhouse on the edge of Pittville Park in the north of Cheltenham. There are 13 bedrooms in different categories from Cosy to Outstanding, and the hotel is decorated with antiques, flowers and artworks. It also has a bar and restaurant.

The Queens Hotel in Cheltenham

Neptune Apartments on the Promenade have Cheltenham’s best shopping, eating and drinking on their doorstep. The 12 luxurious apartments are a mix of studios and one beds, all sleeping two, and come with stylish décor, high-end appliances and their own kitchens and lounge areas.

Or just north of town but still within easy reach, Ellenborough Park * is a five-star country house hotel located close to the racecourse. Its 61 bedrooms are spread across several historic buildings and there’s a restaurant, bar, brasserie and a spa and swimming pool to relax in.

Dreaming of a countryside escape in England? This relaxed two- or three-day itinerary for driving in the Cotswolds will show you the best of the area.

A couple of years ago, I headed off to the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) for an overnight countryside getaway.

Two days of driving through the idyllic countryside, stopping off for forest walks, pub lunches, and cute villages. It was lush – watch the video to see more.

Then, lockdown struck and I never bothered to write up the blog post! I’m now correcting that mistake with a quick and easy 6-stop Cotswolds driving route that can be done over a weekend, or as part of a short break.

On my trip, I wanted to see as much as possible in two days, without feeling rushed or spending too much time driving. If that’s what you’re after too, hopefully you’ll find it here.

For this post, I’ve teamed up with Classic Cottages , who have an incredible range of holiday cottages in the Cotswolds, as well as the rest of the UK. I stayed at one of their properties on my trip to St Agnes last summer and it was an absolute dream – probably the best place I stayed that year!

So, get that Insta-worthy accommodation booked, pack your hiking boots, and hit the road for a gorgeous few days exploring the Cotswolds by car…

This post was brought to you in collaboration with Classic Cottages, but as always all words and opinions are my own. The two-day driving trip in the Cotswolds that I’ve based my itinerary on was paid for by me.

How to Spend 2 Days Driving in the Cotswolds - Itinerary

Cotswolds Itinerary Route Stops

The following Cotswolds driving itinerary spreads nicely across two or three days. I did three stops per day, which was manageable, but I’d recommend three days with two stops per day so that you have longer to make the most of each village – and relax a bit in between.

Alternatively, you could base yourself in one place for a few days and take trips out to explore. Bourton-on-the-Water makes a nice central location, and from there you could do stops one and two as a day trip, followed by stops four to six the next day.

However you do it, these are my top spots for a relaxing Cotswolds road trip…

row of beige stone cottages in a line in front of a path next to grass and trees - cotswolds driving itinerary

Kick off your driving tour with one of the most iconic spots in the Cotswolds. Bibury is a ridiculously pretty village near Cirencester which makes the perfect introduction to the area.

Close your eyes and imagine an old-fashioned English village. That’s what Bibury looks like.

William Morris called it “the most beautiful village in England” – and he may well be right.

At the heart of the village, Arlington Row is one of the most visited and most photographed locations in the area. It’s a picturesque row of 17th-century weaver’s cottages, built from honey-coloured stone with steep grey slate roofs.

It was used as a backdrop for the 2007 movie Stardust (though not for Bridget Jones, as some blogs will tell you – that was filmed in Snowshill).

Be warned – Arlington Row can get pretty busy. Tourists turn up by the bus-load to photograph that pretty strip of houses. Arrive early in the day (before 10am) or late afternoon to avoid the rush!

Top things to do in Bibury

  • Snap a selfie outside Arlington Row
  • Take a walk along the River Coln
  • Admire the historic Arlington Mill

a wooden gate next to a hedge with a view of a green valley and woodlands behind

Most Cotswolds itineraries seem to stick to the eastern half of the AONB, which is where some of the better-known villages and attractions are situated. But it’s also worth heading a little to the west, too. And after busy Bibury, the tranquil, often-overlooked village of Slad is the perfect tonic.

This tiny village sits on the edge of the picturesque Slad Valley, not far from Stroud, and is surrounded by woodlands and nature reserves.

Slad was the home of the writer and poet Laurie Lee, author of Cider with Rosie . The Laurie Lee Wildlife Way is a 5-mile walking route dotted with ten posts, each one containing one of Lee’s poems. It’s a great way to discover his work – and the route itself is a lovely woodland walk with gorgeous views of the valley.

Top Things to do in Slad

  • Walk the Laurie Lee Wildlife Way
  • Visit Laurie Lee Wood (especially during bluebell season)
  • Have a drink at the 300-year-old Woolpack Inn

a wide river with green trees on either side and a path on the right next to some beige stone cottages

Next stop – the picturesque village of Bourton-on-the-Water. Nicknamed the “Venice of the Cotswolds”, this is another of the prettiest villages in the area, seated on the scenic River Windrush.

It’s a larger village than some of the others, and quite touristy, so you’ll find lots to do. And prenty of great pubs and eateries to enjoy, too. This makes the village an excellent base for exploring the Cotswolds.

Top Tip: If you’re doing this Cotswolds driving itinerary over three days, I recommend arriving in Bourton-on-the-Water early on your second day to avoid the crowds.

Top Things to do in Bourton-on-the-Water

  • Visit the model village, a one-ninth stone scale model of the town
  • Walk along the River Windrush
  • Visit the Cotswold Motoring Museum
  • Take a brewery tour at the Cotswold Brewing Company
  • More things to do in Bourton-on-the-Water

a shallow flat river with a row of beige stone cottages behind and several trees and a sunset sky behind - driving in the cotswolds england

Get two villages for the price of one with Upper and Lower Slaughter, two super scenic spots situated a mile apart along the River Eye.

The odd name actually comes from an old English term meaning “wet land” or “muddy”. Since both villages are so close together, you can leave your car in one and walk between the two.

When you see the warm, gold-beige stone cottages reflected in the calm waters of the river, you’ll soon decide that these are two of the prettiest villages in the Cotswolds.

Top Things to do in Upper and Lower Slaughter

  • Walk the 1-mile path along the river from Upper to Lower Slaughter or vice-versa.
  • Visit Lower Slaughter Museum – housed in a 19th-century flour mill with a working waterwheel
  • Go for a meal at the Lords of the Manor Hotel – a stunning 17th-century manor house.
  • More things to do in The Slaughters

a path between two bare trees with a stone tower behind with an empty blue sky - cotswolds driving itinerary

Head towards the northern border of the Cotswolds to reach Broadway Tower. That’s right – the first stop on our driving itinerary that’s NOT a village!

Broadway Tower was built in 1799 as a Gothic-style folly (a building that had no real purpose).

It stands on Broadway Hill, 1,024 feet above sea level. So climbing to the top of the 65ft tower affords some spectacular views of the surrounding countryside.

The tower sits on a 200-acre estate of parkland, so you can also follow several walking routes to soak up the beautiful countryside. Keep an eye out for the resident deer and other wildlife.

Top Tip: Fans of the movie Bridget Jones might want to detour to Snowshill on the way. The scenic village was used as a filming location for Bridget’s parent’s countryside home.

Wooden door on a stone church wall between two trees with thick trunks and lots of green leaves

The final stop on our Cotswolds driving route is Stow-on-the-Wold. This is yet another of the prettiest and most popular villages in the Cotswolds, and it also makes a good base for exploring.

This fairytale-esque village is famous for the historic Yew Door in St. Edward’s Church: a large wooden door flanked by two enormous yew trees, thought to have inspired JRR Tolkein to create the Doors of Durin in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring .

Top Things to do in Stow-on-the-Wold

  • Visit the Yew Tree Door
  • Explore the independent boutiques, art galleries, and antique shops around Market Square
  • Walk through the countryside to the nearby village of Maugersbury
  • More things to do in Stow-on-the-Wold

sunset over a small village with beige buildings and a wide flat river

Bourton-on-the-Water, Upper Slaughter, and Stow-on-the-Wold are all ideal central locations for completing this Cotswolds itinerary. All three villages have several hotels and inns if you want to stay nearby.

If you plan to spend a few days driving in the Cotswolds, but also relaxing in the countryside, a self-catering cottage might be more suitable. Classic Cottages have some amazing properties all around the UK, so have a browse and you’re sure to find your dream cottage. Here are a few of my favourites…

Stonewell Cottage, Stow on the Wold

Sleeps 4 + cot

How to Spend 2 Days Driving in the Cotswolds - Itinerary

Stonewell Cottage is a single-storey stone cottage with a fascinating history. Its thick wooden beams and exposed stone walls are teamed with a light and airy modern decor to create the ultimate countryside escape. And the outside patio area is ideal for al fresco dining or relaxing on sunny days.

Park Farm Cottage, near Malmesbury

Sleeps 8 + 2 cots

cottage built from beige stone and a grey roof with a fgreen lawn in front

Enjoy uninterrupted countryside views from a beautiful farmhouse at Park Farm Cottage , a detached stone cottage nestled on the southern fringes of the Cotswolds. Highlights include the feature fireplace, huge flagstone kitchen, and the original features throughout. Outside, there’s a large enclosed garden with a patio, an orchard, and two paddocks, totalling some three acres.

Little Maunditts Cottage, Sherston

Sleeps 6 + 2 cots

a lounge with white walls and floors and a cream leather sofa with large patio doors open and a patio outside on a sunny day

Nestled in a quiet lane in charming Sherston,  Little Maunditts Cottage gives you the very best of Cotswold village life. The cosy cottage boasts a lovely garden, with big bi-fold doors to let the summer breeze indoors on nice days. But there’s also underfloor heating to add a cosy touch on cooler days and nights – so it’s ideal if you’re visiting during winter.

a stone bridge with a narrow road over a shallow calm river and a row of beige stone cottages behind and a green woodland behind that - tips for driving in the cotswolds

Small Cars. If you have a choice, try to opt for a smaller car. The Cotswolds’ narrow lanes and limited street parking mean big cars often struggle to fit.

Download your maps! Signal is often patchy across The Cotswolds, so it’s a good idea to download an offline version of Google Maps to your phone (or whatever equivalent you use). If your signal drops out, you won’t lose your directions. Phew!

Travelling with Dogs. The Cotswolds are a dream destination for people travelling with dogs. Try to limit your driving time in between stops, though, as your four-legged friend might get restless on longer drives. Thankfully, Classic Cottages have plenty of dog-friendly holiday cottages with hot tubs in the Cotswolds – so you and your furry best friend can unwind at the end of the day.

Flood warnings. When it rains in The Cotswolds, some of the roads can get huge puddles. Yellow hazard warnings have been left at spots where minor flooding is common, so if you see one, just slow down and be ready. If you do drive into a big puddle, remember your driving lessons: don’t brake or speed up. And be sure to test your brakes afterwards before carrying on.

Take the scenic route. Satnavs will usually send you along the most direct route, which often means main roads. Main roads in The Cotswolds are still pretty scenic, but the smaller backroads are often much prettier. If time is on your side, take a look at the map and plot a route along some of the winding country lanes for a lovely scenic drive.

How to Spend 2 Days Driving in the Cotswolds - Itinerary

Driving in the Cotswolds: Final Thoughts

The beauty of a relaxed itinerary like this one is that you can tailor it to fit around you.

If you want a longer holiday, pick a nice holiday cottage to base yourself for a long weekend or a week. You can spend two days of your stay taking mini road trips around the stops I’ve mentioned – as well as spending some days relaxing in your cottage garden or taking walks around the area you’re staying in.

You could also do this as a three-day road trip, staying in Bourton-on-the-Water one night and at Stow-on-the-Wold or another village on the second.

In fact, you could probably even do this Cotswolds driving itinerary in one day. Although I wouldn’t recommend it as you’d have to rush, and some of these villages invite a lot of lingering!

Whatever you get up to – driving in the Cotswolds is a beautiful experience that feels like getting right to the heart of the quintessential English countryside. Enjoy.

The best drives in the Cotswolds

PUBLISHED BY Paula

28924-Image_1.jpg

rom the golden avenues to the patchwork fields, driving through the Cotswolds is a dream. Widely considered to be amongst the most beautiful of regions in the UK, it is the perfect place to explore on a driving holiday and with so much on offer, discovering the charming towns and quaint villages will allow you to fall in love with the British countryside. Explore new regions with each and every journey, following one of these fantastic drives listed below!

Image 2.jpg

“My favourite drive in the Cotswolds is either the climb up to Broadway Tower from Broadway, or just meandering through any number of the stunning villages”, shares Sarah from Classic Travelling , a service which offers motoring holidays and driving tours for classic, vintage and sports cars of all ages. “I like driving in the region as it’s so quintessentially English, with the honey-coloured stone houses that enhance the rolling landscapes. There is also so much to see and visit in the region, coupled with a wealth of great places to eat, drink and stay.”

Milou from the informative travel blog Explorista agrees: “In the summer between Broadway Tower and the village of Snowshill through the Cotswolds Lavender fields. Looks and smells amazing”. Additionally, Sara from Yescapa (which connects holidaymakers with campervan owners across Europe) would suggest continuing the journey from Broadway along to Stratford-Upon-Avon, through the villages of Willersey and Aston Subedge: “Out of all the villages in the Cotswolds, the prettiest drive by far is to take the B4632 road and to head all the way out to Stratford-upon-Avon. The stunning colours of the flowers are breathtaking, lush green fields full of sheep add to the scenic feel along with its unique Georgian architecture. As distances between villages are no longer than 30 mins, a couple of pits stops are necessary in order to really make the most of its beauty.”

Broadway is a beautiful town, and the undulating hills make a perfect backdrop for a drive. The historic town has a number of highlights to explore, including Broadway Tower which provides breathtaking views of the panoramic countryside. There is a number of fantastic restaurants, from Hunters of Broadway , a delicious tearoom, The Potting Shed at Dormy House, with a selection of classic British dishes on the menu and The Jockey Bar at The Broadway Hotel which is a great place for a bite to eat.

Image 3_1.jpg

"My favourite drive in the Cotswolds takes me along the cutest little villages. My favourite ones are Castle Combe, Snowshill, Bourton-on-the-Water and Bibury”, Milou shares. “The thing I love most about the region is the thing that frightens me most too, with the small windy roads. However, I also love how they take me through a landscape that looks like time never caught up to. It’s really the exact dream tourists have of England come to life."

Bourton-on-the-Water is a favourite location for Tom, the owner of Go Cotswolds , a family run tour company that specialises in small-group minibus day tours of the region. Tom spends his days visiting a selection of towns, villages and viewpoints on his guide: “The dry-stone wall lined back roads are narrow and peaceful - you very rarely see any other traffic and there's seemingly a picturesque view or beautiful honey coloured Cotswolds stone village around every corner.

“I'm passionate about the area and people coming to visit and seeing what we have to offer. It's a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (the 2nd largest conservation area in England behind the Lake District) and there's so much to see and do from the natural beauty of the rolling hills to the man-made beauty of the historic towns and villages. This coupled with fantastic walks, food, gardens, pubs, galleries, independent shops etc make it a great place to visit.”

Bourton-on-the-water is regularly voted as one of the prettiest towns in the Cotswolds, with the golden stone and shimmering water providing a tranquil escape. The bubbling River Windrush runs through the middle of the village, with a series of stone bridges running over, adding to Bourton-on-the-Water’s charm. A drive here wouldn’t be complete without visiting one of the village’s many attractions, from Birdland to The Model Village , or stopping for a picnic beside the river.

Follow the B4068 from Bourton-on-the-Water along to Stow-on-the-Wold to experience another of the Cotswolds’ market towns. This road will take you through the Slaughters, which are a favourite of Sarah’s, before reaching one of the most well-known towns in the Cotswolds, Stow-on-the-Wold.

Chipping Campden

Kiftsgate Court Gardens is a family-run estate that has been passed down from generation to generation for almost 100 years. Constantly in the process of being updated and renewed, a trip to Kiftsgate will never be the same experience twice, and the family tradition of seeking out new and interesting plants to compliment the original colour schemes has continued to this day.

Image 4.jpg

“The Cotswolds are best visited on a road trip, so you can take all the time you need to visit each village and making it a unique experience as you’ll be able to wake up next to a field full of sheep!”, believes Emmylou from Yescapa, a platform which allows travellers to rent campervans and motorhomes from private owners all around Europe. One of the most popular routes out of Chipping Campden is the A44. This road takes you through the avenues of trees to Moreton-in-Marsh, another popular market town. “Driving around the Cotswolds remains an experience out of the ordinary. Time seems to stand still bringing a rare sense of serenity. The roads, although old, have been resurfaced and are now a lot more pleasant, giving you enough space to navigate.”

Chipping Campden is a fabulous location to visit whilst driving through the Cotswolds due to its accessibility. There is a plethora of roads for you to take once in the town, allowing you to cater your road trip to your personal taste. Situated in the north of the Cotswolds, Chipping Campden is well-loved for its old Cotswold stone buildings, charming pubs and bluebell fields that cover the countryside during the spring. Explore the quaint shops on the picturesque high street or visit the Court Barn Museum to discover the history of the arts and crafts movement in the area.

The Cotswolds is a wonderful place to drive and has a great range of routes for you to take. Whether you’re looking to be charmed by the village of Bourton-on-the-Water or enjoy a spot to eat at Broadway, it is a location not-to-be-missed when looking for your next UK break destination. Below is a recap of some of the best drives that you can look forward to enjoying on your next visit: • The B4632 from Broadway to Stratford-Upon-Avon • The B4068 from Bourton-on-the-Water to Stow-on-the-Wold • The A44 from Chipping Campden to Moreton-in-Marsh

How to Spend One Day in the Cotswolds Road Trip Itinerary

By: Author Sophie Nadeau

Last Updated on 21st July 2023 by Sophie Nadeau

Chocolate box villages, gently babbling streams, and plenty of history are to be found in abundance should you choose to visit the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty that is the Cotswolds. Here’s how to spend one day in the Cotswolds ; your perfect travel guide and road trip itinerary for one of the most beautiful areas in the UK!

One Day in The Cotswolds & A Road Trip Itinerary You'll Want to Steal! Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Travel Guide; Burford, Bibury, Winchcombe, The Slaughters, and more!

Is it worth visiting the Cotswolds for one day?

Bourton-on-the-water, lower slaughter & upper slaughter, stow-on-the-wold, the bay tree hotel, sheep st, burford ox18 4lw, united kingdom, buckland manor, broadway wr12 7ly, united kingdom, enjoyed reading about the best way to spend 24 hours in the cotswolds pin it now, read it again later:.

You may have landed on this article and be wondering ‘is it worth only spending one day in the Cotswolds?’ Well, I personally think that the answer is yes.

Even if you have less than 24 hours in the Cotswolds, then the area is still worth visiting if that’s the only chance you’ll get to see the area of outstanding natural beauty. Ideally, to truly enjoy the Cotswolds at a slower pace, you’ll want to set aside 3-5 days.

15 Beautiful Cotswolds Villages & Towns You Must Visit! The Cotswolds is an area of outstanding natural beauty in England filled with charming streets, pretty architecture, and plenty of great eats.

Designated an area of outstanding natural beauty, the Cotswolds are easy to reach from both the capital city of London , as well as the City of Dreaming Spires, AKA Oxford.

Bath, Bristol, and several other large towns and cities can also be found within an hour’s drive, meaning that should you have the opportunity to rent a car while in the UK, the Cotswolds are quite easy to visit.

Check this price comparison website to discover the best deals for car rentals!

Though this road trip itinerary is just over an hour in terms of driving time, you’ll want to set aside an entire day so as to fully explore each of the towns listed within this guide. Starting earlier in the day will ensure that you get better light and once in Bibury, finding ample parking space can often be hard!

Fuel can be found in some of the major Cotswolds settlements, though to find the best prices, I’d recommend fuelling up at a large superstore pump prior to visiting. When driving around, it’s worth noting that the speed limit changes often and roads can be quite narrow in places!

Driving time: 1 hour 14 minutes

Distance Covered: 39.8 miles

Where to visit during one day in the Cotswolds

This one day in the Cotswolds starts in the beautiful village of Bibury. Often referred to as the ‘most beautiful village in the Cotswolds,’ Bibury is all buttery stone and winding paths.

Though not as large as you might expect for such a highly-rated settlement, there’s still a church to explore, as well as a tearoom and several pubs. Due to its small size, I would personally recommend bringing along a picnic to enjoy in one of the green spaces in the village.

While in the village of Bibury, be sure to check out Arlington Row. Now owned and managed by the National Trust, this set of cottages is one of the most photographed locations in the Cotswolds and was constructed as early as the 14th-century.

Once a wool store, today these small cottages function as homes. Should you wish to experience life as a local, you can rent No. 9.

Top tip: Before visiting, be sure to note that Bibury is easily one of the most sought after destinations in the Cotswolds. It’s the first suggested stop on the one day Cotswold itinerary as it gets very crowded

One Day in The Cotswolds & A Road Trip Itinerary You'll Want to Steal! Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Travel Guide; Burford, Bibury, Winchcombe, The Slaughters, and more!

There is perhaps no entrance to a Cotswold town quite as impressive as that of Burford. Set above the River Windrush and against the backdrop of rolling green hills, Burford is focused along one main high street which is set along a steep hill.

Highlights of Burford include the oldest chemist in England, an antique shop that was formerly an inn where Charles II took his mistress and an impressively large church.

Elsewhere in town, the Burford Museum is housed within a Tudor building, while the Mad Hatters Bookshop is completely independent and well worth a wander around.

One Day in The Cotswolds & A Road Trip Itinerary You'll Want to Steal! Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Travel Guide; Burford, Bibury, Winchcombe, The Slaughters, and more!

Often referred to as the ‘Venice of the Cotswolds’ as a result of the many meandering streams and waterways which cut their way through Bourton-on-the-Water, this is easily one of the most beautiful Cotswolds towns .

Home to attractions such as a Model Village which is an exact replica of the town and is the only grade two listed model village in the UK, Parish Church, and the Cotswold Motoring Museum, you can’t visit the region and miss out on this delightful town!

Another particularly exciting highlight of Bourton-on-the-Water is the Dragonfly Maze- which is fun for all ages and not just kids! My friend and I visited and spent a good half an hour or so trying to solve the maze!

15 Beautiful Cotswolds Villages & Towns You Must Visit! The Cotswolds is an area of outstanding natural beauty in England filled with charming streets, pretty architecture, and plenty of great eats.

After visiting Bourton-on-the-Water, it’s just a short drive to one of the more remote villages this region has to offer. Accessible only via narrow lanes, Lower Slaughter has little by way of attractions.

Instead, there are pretty villages to snap photos of, as well as plenty of pretty floral displays in the summer months and an impressive mill which can be spied from across the village.

Should you have a little more time to spare when in the area, be sure to check out the nearby Upper Slaughter .

Less touristic than its neighbour, the hamlet was listed as a ‘Double Thankful Village’ following the World Wars as it lost no men in WWI and none in WWII. Less touristic than Lower Slaughter, Upper Slaughter is easily one of the best-kept secrets of the Cotswolds.

A quick guide to the best things to do in Lower Slaughter: Is this the prettiest town in the Cotswolds, Gloucestershire, England?

If you’ve ever seen photos on Instagram of the Cotswolds, you’ve likely spied the Great Yew in the yard of Stow-on-the-Wold’s Church. The medieval built St Edward’s Church is a Grade I listed building and is just one of the many things Stow-on-the-Wold has to offer.

So iconic is the yew door, that it’s thought by many to have inspired Tolkien to create The Doors of Durin in the Lord of the Rings. In other parts of this pretty settlement, you can expect to find gems such as the oldest pub in England (the Porch House) and some pretty stunning architecture.

15 Beautiful Cotswolds Villages & Towns You Must Visit! The Cotswolds is an area of outstanding natural beauty in England filled with charming streets, pretty architecture, and plenty of great eats.

For those who love antique shopping, Winchcombe likely needs no introduction. Home to numerous places in which to shop all things vintage and second-hand, be sure to stop by Winchcombe Antiques Centre for one of the best coffees in town!

Once in the basement, you’ll soon find a small tea room serving freshly brewed beverages and delicious cakes, perfect for a little gourmet break during your one day in the Cotswolds. Nearby to Winchcombe, you’ll soon discover that there are plenty of attractions which will appeal to history buffs.

For example, Belas Knap is an ancient Neolithic Burial Ground, while Hailes Abbey is the remains of a 13th-century Cistercian Monastery. Elsewhere close by, Sudeley Castle is a 15th-century fortress constructed on the site of a 12th-century castle.

Where to stay in the Cotswolds

Though 24 hours in the Cotswolds is more than enough to scratch the surface of this area of England, I highly recommend basing yourself in the region for a long weekend so as to make the most of your visit, as opposed to simply spending one day in the Cotswolds. Here are some of the best places to stay in the Cotswolds (based on online reviews and location) :

Once home to Elizabeth I’s Baron of the Exchequer, this pub is priced at a reasonable rate and can be found in the pretty town of Burford. Well-reviewed, this three-star hotel is situated just steps away from Burford high street.

Check further details and prices here.

Located close to the beautiful town of Broadway, this luxury country house hotel is the ultimate escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. On land which was once owned by the Abbey of Gloucester, there’s been a large manor house on site since the 13th-century.

Do you have tips for parking?

Sophie Nadeau

Friday 3rd of March 2023

It can be tough to find a parking spot in Bibury and so I recommend going there first for that very reason. We parked a little further out and walked in (around 10 minutes). There's a free car park in Burford at the lower end of the town set next to the river Windrush. I think there's a free car park in Bourton-on-the-Water but it was so busy that we ended up going into a paid parking to save time. Upper Slaughter and Lower Slaughter I seem to remember we didn't spend too long in and so we parked at the side of the road (though check for double yellows, of course). Stow-on-the-Wold and Winchcombe both have large paid parking lots so I would just type 'parking in *town name*' into your maps app (Google or Sat Nav) and they should come up.

I’ve visited more than forty countries across America, Africa, Asia, Australia, the Middle East and Europe, and still have many more on my list to see. Travelling has always been a passion, but it really kick-started with my 20,000km charity bike ride from London in England to Cape Town in South Africa in 2010. The journey was the best experience of my life.

Graham Usher

From a very young age my parents instilled into me the importance of travel. They would always say ‘travel broadens the mind.’ Decades later I found that to be a massive understatement.

I started off travelling most of Europe and parts of the US up until the age of around 21. Then I took a leap into the dark and moved to Hong Kong for five years to work. This gave me the chance to see and experience how different cultures live, work and have fun. From here I spent months travelling around the Far East of Asia and Australia, as well as parts of Northern Africa, Europe and the US. During this time I saw many incredible things and met such wonderful people that travel became even more important to me.

Trips can be arranged to the stunning Warwick Castle, which is one of the finest castles in the UK, or you could visit the historic Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire, not only view the Palace, but also the beautiful grounds, styled by Capability Brown during the late 1700s.

We could venture further South and visit the historic Roman town of Bath, where you can take a leisurely stroll around the town looking at its many boutique shops and of course the famous Royal Crescent and Circus.

You may wish to just take a drive and view the stunning Cotswold countryside or maybe a tour around the nearby Malvern Hills with their striking views from the Worcestershire Beacon which is 1,394 feet above sea level.

We are happy to arrange any tour to suit your requirements, please contact us to make further arrangements.

Some example trips

Northern cotswolds, southern cotswolds.

The Northern Cotswold tour would include the old woollen towns of Chipping Campden, Stow-on-the-Wold, then to Bourton-on-the-Water and The Slaughters. Lunch could then be taken at a Cotswold pub, so you can sample a traditional English pub lunch and some of the local ales and cider.

We would then travel onto the small town of Winchcombe, through the villages of Stanton, Snowshill and Broadway. Making sure we take in the landmark of Broadway Tower and onto to stunning views offered by Dovers Hill.

At any of these locations you can stop to walk around these historic places, and perhaps take a coffee in one of the many Coffee shops on your way.

The Southern Cotswold tours offers the same high quality views and scenery, taking in the market towns of Cirencester and Tetbury.

Travelling through the stunning villages of Bibury and Arlington and many of the other fabulous villages in the Southern Cotswolds. Again, lunch can be taken on one of the many Cotswold pubs where you can enjoy some typical local food, ales and ciders. Then across to the old market town of Burford and then back through many more Cotswold villages such as The Barringtons.

These villages and towns are just to give you an idea of what we can offer on a tour. If there are any specific locations you would like to see or to spend more time at then please do not hesitate to inform us.

Plan Your Trip to the Cotswolds

The Cotswolds cover such a vast area, so it is a good idea to plan your trip in advance to decide on your Cotswolds wish list, as there are many attractions, activities, as well as festivals and events across the area.  So, where do you start?

You can use this website to view the wonderful attractions, check out what’s on and choose your accommodation as a start to planning your trip.  Once you have arrived you can visit one of the Tourist Information Centres where you will receive a personal touch to help you plan your trip further.  You can even pick up some gifts and souvenirs too.

Once you have decided on where you would like to go, you can then decide on what mode of transport you will take to get here.  Many towns and even some villages have train stations with many on the direct train line from London.  There are bus services and coach trips which are also a great way to get around.

If you have taken the train, you may choose to hire a car, or may just want to experience quintessential England in style and feel exhilarated by hiring a classic car. There are many roads and country lanes to explore, which lead to non-stop villages with the Cotswolds charm that you would expect.

Please make sure you follow the Cotswolds green code of conduct, but if you want to go that extra mile to help the Cotswolds stay beautiful for generations to come, then you might like to stay in a green accredited accommodation provider.

’24 Watkins Glen Hoosier Super Tour: At A Glance

Only two stops remain on the 2024 Hoosier Racing Tire SCCA® Super Tour schedule, with the penultimate weekend coming up May 31-June 2 at Watkins Glen International (WGI) in the western portion of New York. Situated at the southern tip of Seneca Lake, WGI is an epic track nestled in green, rolling hills – and it’s a locale on the bucket list of drivers and spectators alike.

The three-day Super Tour hosted by SCCA’s Finger Lakes Region is open to spectators, so grab a picnic basket and some lawn chairs, then get trackside to take in the action. An entry pass for the entire race weekend is just $32 per person, or $27 for Sunday-only admission. Kids 12-years old and younger are admitted free with an adult.

Those who can’t make it to WGI in person can still catch the wheel-to-wheel excitement online thanks to HST’s live broadcast produced by DriversEye Live and anchored by announcers Gregg Ginsberg and Larry MacLeod. Coverage is streamed via the SCCA Official YouTube channel  and  SCCA Facebook page . On Sunday, victory podium celebrations can be viewed at the  SCCA Road Racing Facebook page .

As always, live Timing & Scoring will be found throughout the weekend at scca.com/live .

WGI HST Timing & Broadcast

Stiff Competition

Numerous reigning SCCA National Championship Runoffs® winners will be at WGI to take on the 3.4-mile, 11-turn circuit – a layout that includes The Boot and Inner Loop. HST races at the legendary course are always exciting, and having champs in the mix ups the intensity.

One of those Champions is Daniel Richardson, who’s slated to drive the No. 22 Hoosier/AutoGear/ProSystems Brakes/Performance Auto Works/Gentium Technologies Chevrolet Camaro in the American Sedan® class. Graham Fuller is the current GT-Lite Champion, and he’ll be driving the No. 22 TRD/Goodyear/Carbotech/Ostar Motorsports Toyota Tercel against seven other GT-Lite entrants. Then there’s B-Spec National Champion Richard Hromin, who’ll be piloting the No. 1 RAT Sport/RP Performance/PAW/VCF/G-LOC Mini Cooper against at least four other B-Spec challengers.

The seven-entrant Formula Enterprises® 2 field is where you’ll find reigning National Champion Charles Russell Turner in the No. 32 Southeast Spec Racer/PCS SCCA Enterprises FE2 Mazda. And Todd Vanacore will be competing in Prototype 1 as the reigning class champ in the No. 19 Comprent/Halifax Plantation Elan DP02 car.

Turner and Vanacore are scheduled to pull double duty over the weekend as both are also entered in the 30-car Spec Racer® Ford Gen3 class, which is currently set to be the largest single field for the WGI weekend.

Tony Ave seems to be planning for an active weekend, too, at The Glen. In GT-3, where Ave is reigning National Champion, he’ll jump into the No. 44 Acura RSX. That same car is also entered in GT-2 competition, as Ave may toggle between classes to amass the required starts that will qualify him for the Runoffs GT-2 race. Lastly, Ave intends to slide into something completely different – that being the No. 44 Optech Swift 016 Mazda 2300 – for a go at Formula Atlantic® competition.

More information about the Watkins Glen Hoosier Super Tour can be found online at the event page , and a current entry list is available by clicking the red button below.

The Glen Schedule

Hoosier Super Tour road racing excitement at The Glen begins Friday morning, May 31, with 25-minute practice sessions for each of the eight run groups. The second half of Friday, starting at 1:35 p.m. Eastern Time, will see the first five run groups take 25-minute turns on track for qualifying.

Qualifying continues at 8 a.m. local time Saturday, June 1, with run groups 6, 7, and 8 getting out on track for their 25-minute qualifying sessions. Racing then begins at 9:45 a.m. with all eight run groups tackling 25-minute contests until the day ends.

Sunday, June 2, spawns a second day of HST competition starting at 8 a.m. Eastern Time. All eight run groups will have 35-minute or 15-lap races during the day to decide winners.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

car tour cotswolds

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

car tour cotswolds

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

car tour cotswolds

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

car tour cotswolds

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

car tour cotswolds

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

car tour cotswolds

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

car tour cotswolds

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

Scottie scheffler arrest video shows cop pushing golfer against car.

  • Breaking News

Cops have just released video from the scene of Scottie Scheffler 's arrest last week ... and in the footage, you can see at least one officer pushed the golfer against a car -- before placing him in handcuffs.

The images were captured by a camera affixed to a street pole located just a few feet away from Valhalla Golf Club -- the site of this month's PGA Championship.

Due to its proximity to the arrest ... it did not capture the 27-year-old's initial interaction with authorities -- however, you can see it did record the moments after Louisville Metro Police were able to stop him as he tried to make his way into the course.

One officer can be seen running toward Scheffler's driver's side door ... before he appears to reach in through the window at Scheffler multiple times. After several seconds, Scheffler's door opens ... and then one cop seems to then shove him against the ride.

Scheffler was then placed in cuffs, the video shows ... and marched to a nearby squad car.

Cops also released dashcam footage from a police cruiser at the scene ... and it shows Scheffler being hauled away from up-close. It also caught cops' ensuing tense interaction with a reporter who had been on the scene covering the incident.

As we reported, Scheffler was ultimately taken to a nearby jail and booked on several criminal charges , including felony assault of a police officer. He was later released ... and was able to finish the weekend's major tournament in a tie for eighth place.

Louisville officials announced Thursday the arresting officer in the case, Bryan Gillis , violated policy by not activating his body-worn camera during the arrest ... however, the criminal case against Scheffler remains ongoing.

He's due next in court on June 3.

The List Of Perks The Winner Gets At The Charles Schwab Challenge Shows Why Colonial Event Is One Of The PGA Tour's Best

It's a big week on the PGA Tour with the iconic Colonial Country Club once again playing host to the Charles Schwab Challenge .

The Fort Worth venue is hosting on the PGA Tour for a record 78th time, which is the most for a non-Major venue.

This year's field is stacked with some of the tour's best players, including 66 who teed it up in last week's PGA Championship, and they're all vying to put their name in the history books as a winner at Colonial.

So what exactly does the winner get this year? Let's take a look:

While not one of the PGA Tour's most lucrative 'Signature' events , the champion still banks a huge paycheck.

The winner at Colonial will take home $1.638m, which is up $72,000 from the $1.566m Emiliano Grillo won last year.

2. The Tartan Jacket

Not to be confused with the other tartan jacket awarded to the RBC Heritage winner, the Charles Schwab Challenge victor gets their own very cool piece of apparel.

It's a Scottish royal tartan plaid jacket that is also worn by Colonial's top committee chairmen. It was first given out in 1952.

3. The Leonard trophy

The Charles Schwab Challenge trophy is one of the best on the PGA Tour.

The winner doesn't get to keep it as it resides in the clubhouse all year, but they do get their name on it along with all winners since 1946.

They do get a small replica of the trophy, which features a silver bowl and eagle atop a traditional wood base. Ben Hogan, a five-time winner at Colonial, has all of his replicas on display in the Hogan Trophy Room inside the clubhouse.

4. Wall of champions

As well as getting their name on the iconic trophy, something perhaps even cooler is the fact that the champion's name gets engraved into the 'Wall of Champions', which is near the first tee.

Win at Colonial and you're truly etched into history.

5. Champions Dinner

Much like The Masters, the Charles Schwab Challenge champion is honored the following year with a Champions Dinner. It's there where they receive their replica of the Leonard Trophy.

6. Two-year PGA Tour exemption

The champion secures a huge payday, some very cool perks and the peace of mind that they've secured their job for the next two years.

7. Other exemptions

This week's winner earns a spot into next week's Memorial Tournament, one of the big $20m Signature Events on the PGA Tour that takes place at Jack Nicklaus' Muirfield Village.

They also qualify for The Sentry in Hawaii to start 2025 and the PGA Tour's flagship 'The Players Championship' at TPC Sawgrass next year too.

8. FedEx Cup points

A total of 500 FedEx Cup points go to the winner, which will go a long way to helping them qualify for the season-ending Playoffs that take place in August.

A top-30 position before the Tour Championship gets you into the finale at East Lake, where the winner walks home with $18m.

9. World ranking points

The champion this week is projected to earn a huge 59 points in the Official World Golf Ranking, which will give them a nice boost up the list. It could be the difference between qualifying for the Majors or not.

10. A very cool new ride

The champion will also secure themselves a one-of-a-kind car courtesy of tournament sponsors Charles Schwab.

The tradition began in 2019, when the company began sponsoring the event.

According to the PGA Tour, this year’s prize car is a 1975 Schwab Stingray, "which pays homage to a pivotal moment in Schwab’s history; on May 1, 1975, commonly known as “May Day,” the SEC deregulated commissions that brokers could charge their clients; while most firms raised their prices, Schwab did the opposite and cut their rates, which helped reshape the industry."

2025 BMW M5 Sedan And Touring Get Nurburging Shakedown

The latest generation of the beloved M5 will be the most powerful in the model's history

  • Power is expected to come from the XM’s 4.4-liter twin-turbo hybrid V8 with 718 hp
  • BMW ‘s new M5 Touring will rival the Audi RS6 Avant
  • The new super sedan and wagon models should debut in the coming months

It’s hard not to love the BMW M5 and the latest-generation model is just around the corner. Not only will it be more powerful than the car it replaces but it will be sold in sedan and Touring guises, both of which will be offered in the United States.

Earlier this month, BMW took camouflaged prototypes of the new M5 Sedan and Touring to the Nurburgring for some high-speed testing. These crystal-clear images of the two duo give us a good look at their aggressive styling before the veil is officially lifted.

The prototype sedan is painted matte black and has camo across the front and rear fascias, as well as on the roof. Despite the presence of this camo, we can see the carmaker has modified the car’s front fascia significantly, installing a new lower grille and making everything look much more menacing. The car also adopts muscular arches while found at the rear is a dramatic diffuser and quad tailpipes.

Of the pair, it’s the M5 Touring that we’re most excited about. It benefits from the same front-end treatment as the sedan but we think the overall shape of the estate makes it that much more appealing. BMW has also developed a sharp roof-mounted spoiler for the car. Anyone with an Audi RS6 Avant on order would be wise to put it on hold.

Most signs point towards the new M5 receiving the same plug-in hybrid powertrain as the BMW XM. If true, that means the new super sedan and super estates will have a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 working alongside an electric motor. BMW may detune this powertrain slightly from the XM Label Red, capping it to 718 hp and 760 lb-ft (1,030 Nm) of torque. This will give the car a near-100 hp advantage over the RS6.

BMW is expected to unveil the new M5 Sedan and M5 Touring this July.
