One of the best parts of exploring any city—but especially a city as iconic as Paris—is getting to finally go off the beaten path and see what the local areas are like. 

The second I walked into the Canal Saint-Martin neighborhood, I knew I had found a total local gem—one of the most hipster, trendy Paris neighborhoods that had been hiding from me on multiple previous visits.

Naturally, I ended up spending a ton of time there as a result!

Located just northeast of the Marais , and north of Bastille , Canal St Martin Paris is one of the best hip Paris neighborhoods. It’s a quaint local area that I think everyone should check out when they visit Paris , especially because it’s so central you won’t even need to go out of your way to see it.

9 Fun Things to Do in Canal St Martin Paris

Canal Saint Martin Paris, unlike some of the more famous neighborhoods in Paris, is not necessarily full of “things to do”, but if you’re a regular reader of the blog you’ll know that that’s usually more appealing to me anyway!

I love exploring more off-the-beaten-track areas of a city. For me, that’s how you really get to see the true energy of the place.

Keeping with that spirit, I’ve collected all the best “things to do” in Canal St Martin Paris, but don’t be surprised that they’re very casual and in line with the spirit of the neighborhood.

Many people will do a cruise along the Seine while in Paris, but why not switch it up a bit and do a Seine/Canal Saint-Martin combination cruise .

This is great if you’d prefer to have a less physically demanding activity than a walking tour. It’s also always a nice experience to get to see any city from the water—and Paris is no exception.

Being on a boat is pretty relaxing, and the guide will be able to tell you about all the things you’re passing.

This particular cruise is nice because you get to see Canal Saint-Martin and it goes past most of the major parts of the city via the Seine—best of both worlds!

Jardin Villemin is a park in the Canal Saint-Martin area that’s totally overlooked by tourists, but incredibly beloved by locals.

As I’ve said before on this blog, I love walking through, or even sitting and enjoying, parks while traveling. I think it’s a great way to do something free, and usually not very touristy. It’s also a nice way to relax after a long day of walking. 

This particular park is easily located to the rest of the Canal St. Martin area, right on the water.

If you want to skip a formal lunch, and indulge in a picnic full of yummy French deli snacks , Canal Saint-Martin is a great place to do that.

For me, the perfect French picnic has a few key components: a fancy cheese, a good baguette, some kind of cured meat, a deli item of sorts (olives, perhaps?), and something sweet. Oh, and we can’t forget the wine.

I recommend setting up camp either in the Jardin Villemin, or right along the canal! For the perfect upscale wines and cheeses, I recommend La Crèmerie , and for pastries or bread, just go around the block to Du Pain et des Idées .

If you want to go a bit more casual/budget-friendly, there’s also a Carrefour in the same area.

4. Stroll Quai de Valmy & Quai de Jemmapes to take in the canal

If you wanted to get a long walk in, you could walk the length of the canal! The entire canal is nearly 3 miles long, but you can just choose to walk whatever portion of it feels right for you.

This is a great way to see all the different types of neighborhoods that line the canal , and enjoy the calm that the canal brings!

Also, there are tons of shops and cafes that line the canal, so you can always stop and explore all the nice spots you see on your journey.

A bit further out from the more central parts of the canal areas, CENTQUATRE is a unique and exciting community art center in the 19th arrondissement. The enormous multi-purpose space is really a sight to be seen, as it’s home to various art spaces, event spaces, public spaces, and cafes.

The artists that have spaces here are invited to work at the site, so you’ll probably come across artists in the midst of creating their masterpieces! 

The space celebrates all disciplines of art, and is a great activity for any age group. This could be a great option for anyone wanting a more contemporary museum option, but without wanting to commit to a full museum experience.

It’s open every day but Monday.

In a similar vein to CENTQUATRE, Point Ephémère is another cultural center that allows artists to work on their projects—and it’s a little closer to the center of Canal Saint-Martin , meaning it may be slightly easier to visit. Set in a former art deco material warehouse, the space has an expansive outdoor area just next to the canal.

All kinds of disciplines inhabit the space, and the works of the artists are on display for the public in their exhibition space. 

Not only that, but they also have concerts, events and bars onsite, so you can enjoy more traditional cultural events, if contemporary art isn’t your vibe. The graffiti-covered walls, bare concrete structures and glass roofs give it a serious Berlin vibe, which I’m not mad about at all! Make sure to check out the calendar to see what’s on!

During the summer, the evenings can get a bit crowded, but it can be worth it to enjoy an aperitif and meal on the sunny terrace.

The Hotel du Nord is another iconic movie location you can visit, this time for fans of the golden age of cinema. 

The film Hotel du Nord is from 1938, and though most of the movie was filmed in a studio, the setting is Canal Saint Martin Paris, and the facade of the actual Hotel du Nord is a fun treat for fans and history lovers alike. 

You can pop in for a meal or just a drink/coffee and enjoy their vintage looking interior, or opt to sit canal side on their lovely terrace.

One of the things I was most struck by while exploring Canal Saint Martin Paris was how many cute shops I passed! Before visiting this neighborhood I was always told that the main shopping areas were the Marais and Saint-Germain, so after seeing what was hiding in the Canal St Martin Paris area I felt like I’d found a hidden gem!

The colorful facades of Antoine et Lili were the first things to catch my eye, and I definitely spent some time browsing the colorful and whimsical interior.

Centre Commercial is great for ethical and sustainable upscale fashion, and Artazart is a fantastic bookshop with titles mostly in French, but also a good selection of English.

Don’t miss Marché Couvert Saint-Martin , which was rebuilt in the 1800s, and has loads of stalls inside to browse.

And finally, for some vintage and second hand shops, check out Ding 2 Fring , Urban Vintage Paris , Machicadou , and Frivoli !

I love taking a walking tour to get to know a city better, and that’s even more true in more off the beaten track neighborhoods where you can often find a passionate local to show you around.

Here are two excellent options in Canal St. Martin that will have you feeling like you just a made a cool new Parisian friend while getting to experience the neighborhood and access a more authentic side to Paris:

This hidden gem food tour of Canal St. Martin with a group called No Diet Club is my kind of food tour! They promise no cheese and croissants—not that you shouldn’t eat cheese and croissants, but this tour is all about eating like the young, hip locals of the neighborhood! You’ll go to all of the cool spots of the neighborhood, and the group just has perfect vibes in their tour description, so I have no doubt it’ll be an excellent time.

If you’re looking for a more comprehensive tour of the neighborhood (and to kill two birds with one stone) this “Like a Local” private tour of Canal Saint-Martin and the Latin Quarter is a perfect choice. It’s actually via a company called WithLocals that I’ve used myself a few times. Their whole thing is offering only private tours with guides they’ve vetted as true, born-and-bred locals.

As I’ve already mentioned, Canal Saint-Martin is an ideal place to base yourself during your visit to Paris because it is super central.

Not only is the 10th arrondissement the location of Gare du Nord and Gare de l’Est, but this neighborhood is also very much walkable to The Marais and to Bastille , two of my other favorite neighborhoods in Paris . Even better, the hotels you’ll find in Canal St. Martin are significantly cheaper than those in The Marais, while being just a cute and cozy!

Hôtel Amoi Paris

You won’t find any traditional Parisian charm at Hôtel Amoi Paris , but honestly—that’s totally ok! Everything here is Parisian to the core, from one-of-a-kind furnishings from local designers to locally sourced toiletries and nibbles. Not to mention the modern funky vibes are on point and, oh, did I mention the sauna and hammam, both free for guests?!

H ô tel Taylor

€ | 3 Star | Elevated Functional | Quiet & Cozy

Definitely one of the more basic options on this list, Hôtel Taylor is still nothing to scoff at. Not only will you find some adorable design touches, but recent guests rave about the short walk to République, the delicious €6 breakfast, and lots of strategically placed USB ports—none of which are to be taken for granted!

La Planque Hôtel

€ € | 3 Star | Funky Design | Welcoming Vibe

If you’re looking for a quiet little retreat from the bustling city, La Planque Hôtel is for you. Just steps from a metro station and the Canal St. Martin itself, this tiny boutique hotel has cozy rooms, a cozy breakfast area, and a cozy terrace—basically, endless spaces to chill out! Rooms on the top floor have views, and recent guests rave about the kind, helpful and patient staff.

Renaissance Paris République

Ok, so the Renaissance Paris République may not exactly be a boutique Paris hotel. But it certainly feels like one! I can’t lie—there is always something comforting about the “boutique” arm of a larger hotel chain. You get the design and the attention of a true boutique hotel with all the “extras” of the big players, like a fitness center and rewards redemptions. Plus, this hotel is literally steps from République metro station and the fun of Canal St. Martin.

Canal Saint-Martin is absolutely worth visiting , especially for those who want to visit Paris and see the off the beaten track neighborhoods. 

Canal Saint Martin is a much more local, trendy, and hipster Paris neighborhoods than many of the other neighborhoods you might find yourself in as a tourist to Paris, which makes it one of the great non touristy things to do in Paris.   Exploring the area allows you to see a side to the city that you may have never had access to otherwise , and makes your time in Paris feel all that much more authentic. 

There are also tons of great restaurants in Canal Saint Martin Paris (which we’ll get to), so that’s an extra bonus for why you’d want to visit Canal Saint-Martin in Paris.

What is Canal Saint-Martin known for?

Canal Saint-Martin is known for, well, the canal of course! The calm and pretty canal that defines the neighborhood is a great place to walk along, have a picnic, or just a nice view as you eat a meal on a canal-side terrace.

The area is also well known for some film settings : Amélie, for example, sets some of its whimsical scenes in Canal St Martin Paris. 

Last but not least, Canal Saint-Martin is known for being a hipster and cool , more local part of Paris, making it one of the more unique things to do in Paris.

Is Canal Saint-Martin a good place to stay?

Yes, Canal Saint Martin Paris is one of the best Paris neighborhoods to stay in. For one thing, it’s relatively close to the train stations , so if you aren’t in Paris for very long you don’t have to spend too much time in transit.

Also, much like Bastille , it’s walkable to the Marais , but way cheaper. 

The area itself is also super desirable, with lots of cute boutiques, bars and restaurants that aren’t nearly as packed with tourists .

It manages to be a nice combination of lively and not-too-overstimulating, due to its local charm. It’s also considered a relatively safe neighborhood because it’s so lively.

Our Guide: Exploring the Canal St. Martin, a Village in Paris

The Canal St. Martin has always attracted visitors and an eclectic group of Parisians, combining a quaint, off-the-beaten path quality with the perfect amount of postcard Paris charm. Neighborhood institutions such as Le Verre Volé and Chez Prune have tempted diners to this part of Paris for the past few decades, but a recent boom in new shops, cafés and restaurants surrounding the canal has made this area, casually referred to as Village St Martin , not just a place to go for lunch or dinner, but a destination to spend the day.

While classic canal-side destinations still retain their charm, here are some newcomers to the neighborhood that are worth adding to your itinerary.

Start off with a good cup of coffee (Paris has that now!)

The new wave of cafés opening up across the city are dedicated to sourcing quality coffee beans that are often locally roasted. The Canal St. Martin area is no stranger to this trend, with a handful of high quality, cosy cafés opening up in recent years. Ten Belles (10 Rue de la Grange aux Belles) features craft roasted coffee and seasonal cuisine in a tiny, typically Parisian space. Café Craft  (24 Rue des Vinaigriers) is technically a co-worker space, but if you’re travelling sans laptop, or just enjoying some time off, you can grab a spot at the front of the coffee shop and enjoy quality coffee with lovely baked goods for breakfast.

It’s hard to visit Holybelly  (19 Rue Lucien Sampaix) and just have a coffee, though that’s a good enough reason to go on its own. Nico Alary serves up all kinds of cafés using locally roasted Belleville Brulerie beans; get there early to pair your coffee with their to-die-for pancakes or eggs & sides.

Take time to stroll… and shop!

Get to know some of the main streets of the Village St Martin– where cafés, to-go food options, and great shopping come together. For a huge and eclectic selection of magazines, books, guides check out Artazart (83 Quai de Valmy), a design bookstore. Along with publications on art, food, and design (as well as an amazing selection of children’s books), the shop also stocks unique items that make perfect gifts for the photographer, cook, or francophile in your life.

For made-in-France fashion, head to Ambrym  (22 Rue des Vinaigriers), where you’ll find clothing made using organic cotton and a selection of handmade jewelry and other accesories. Continue to shop local at Centre Commercial  (2 Rue de Marseille), which features European clothing brands and vintage items ranging from furniture to bikes. For more vintage finds, head to Les Petits Meubles de Marie  (38, rue Lucien Sampaix), where impeccably renovated furniture and accent pieces combine vintage charm with a modern Parisian touch.

Source a stellar picnic…

The canal is a favorite spot for picnicking among Parisians, and the surrounding neighborhood has conveniently adapted to this pastime. To-go food options have become abundant and internationally influenced. Jules et Shim  (22 Rue des Vinaigriers) proposes fresh korean food in picnic friendly containers. The Sunken Chip  (39 Rue des Vinaigriers) specializes in authentic English fish and chips, also a great option for eating canalside.

Grab a bottle of wine to go at Le Verre Volé  (67 Rue de Lancry). If you want a more DIY dining experience, put together and cheese and charcuterie plate in two stops: La Crèmerie  (49 rue Albert Thomas) has a wide selection of artisanal cheeses along with a friendly knowledgeable staff and Viande et Chef  (38 Rue de Lancry) has a mouthwatering meat counter of high quality meats, prepared in a variety of ways.

…or grab a table

Traditonal French cuisine with a contantly changing menu keeps Le Verre Volé (67 Rue de Lancry) and interesting and dependable neighborhood address for lunch and dinner. Chez Prune (36 Rue Beaurepaire) offers bistro fare in a people watching friendly environment. Finally, if you’re feeling adventurous, wander a little ways from the canal to get great Cambodian food at Le Petit Cambodge  (20 Rue Alibert) which fills up quickly, but is worth the wait!

It was enhanced because our tour guide's grandfather had been recruited by the Nazis to help make concrete and he was able to do some resistance by using salt water instead of regular water. He also went into hiding when he heard they were coming back to his town for more recruits. Having this guide made the tour even more special. We booked a 4 hr ( half day) guided tour of Versailles palace/gardens etc from Versailles ( without transportation). We were extremely disappointed as this is NOT what it turned out to be!! BE AWARE: it is only a 1 hr guided tour of the palace and the remainder 3 hrs is you being left on your own to “ discover” the rest of Versailles!! It was a total let down. We called Paris City Vision to ask for a refund but we were told that our interpretation of a half day guided tour was very different from theirs and that this was indeed the your- this was a surprise for us. I rated the whole experience 3 because our tour guide’s microphone wouldn’t function. As a result half the group fortunate enough to have internet cell connections on their mobile phones scanned a QR code and went off on their own. The remaining half either 1) stayed with the guide, who took us very slowly around the gardens, or 2) got separated from the guide due to the massive crowd. My travel companion was one of those who got separated. She went first to the house then the garden but would have liked a commentary. I stayed with the guide and never got to see the house as, by then the line for the house was an hour wait and we were out of time. I would still suggest an organised tour because they can bypass the long ticket line. Tour Review: Canal Saint-Martin Food Tour by Localers

If you follow my travels, you know that food makes up a large part of where I go and what I do. So when I was invited on a food tour of the Canal Saint-Martin  by the lovely people over at Localers, I happily agreed. Not only is this neighbourhood a favourite of mine, but I realize that I don’t actually know it as well as I think I do.

The Canal Saint-Martin

If you haven’t heard of Localers ,  then forget everything you know about organized group tours. Specializing in day tours all over Paris , their tagline, “Explore France Like a Local,” resonated with me because that’s exactly what Coveted Places is about! Their tour guides are local experts that live and breathe Paris and their small group size won’t label you as a tourist – groups are capped at ten people in order to keep it intimate, making it easier to interact with your guide. All the places they go to are local businesses that range from food, to fashion, to history and literature. Keep reading to find out my impressions of this food tour.

Before you go

• There is a maximum of seven participants on this particular tour .
• Be sure to wear a comfortable pair of shoes as there’s plenty of walking.
• Pack a water bottle for in between food tastings.
• You’ll get lots of food to sample, so be prepared to eat well – it is a food tour after all!

Canal Saint-Martin Food Tour

Marché Saint-Martin

Located in the 10ème arrondissement on the right bank of Paris, the Canal Saint-Martin ties the Canal de l’Ourcq and the Seine together. As our lovely guide Marie explains, there is a great diversity in inhabitants here, from families to young professionals of all nationalities and ages. She goes on to explain the bobo (bourgeois bohemian, aka the Parisian hipster) gentrification in recent years, which has made this the newest hotspot in Paris, right after the Marais. Despite its recent hype, the Canal Saint-Martin remains a neck of the woods that tourists don’t particularly add to their bucket lists, making it all the more interesting to visit. On our particular tour, we’re lucky since the canal has just been filled with fresh water as it was recently cleaned out (I suggest you Google all the interesting things that were found at the bottom of the canal!).

We begin our foodie adventure at the Marché Saint-Martin , which dates back to 1859. I previously didn’t even know that this covered market existed and Marie confirms that it’s one of the lesser known marchés in Paris. It is small at first glance but its facade makes a grand impression thanks to its Baltard-style architecture. Full of mouth-watering, local produce, we keep it regional by sampling strawberries and cherry tomatoes from Île-de-France. Both taste like candy. Speaking of local, that’s exactly who you’ll rub shoulders with while shopping here – Parisians who actually live in the neighbourhood.

La Crèmerie

Next, we hit La Crèmerie fine épicerie to discover their array of French cheeses (including a black Brie, which apparently has a texture similar to parmesan), charcuteries, and local produce. We’re given a platter of charcuterie to try and are told to sample it in the order of mildest to strongest. Here’s what we got: Rosette (dry sausage), chorizo, saucisson à l’ail (garlic), andouille (made from pigs’ intestines), and boudin noir (blood sausage). The last two definitely have a surprising kick to them (the andouille, as you can imagine, receives mixed reviews) while the garlic saucisson is surprisingly mild. The rosette remains my favourite out of the five.

Liberté par Benoît Castel

Liberté par Benoît Castel is our next stop for sweets and a history lesson on French bread. One of the newer boulangeries of Paris, its bright and modern design is contrasted with the old tradition of bread and pastry making displayed behind their glass counter. We sample madeleines and financiers, which we learn are named after bars of gold due to their shape. Both of these are small French sweets, similar to sponge cake. Time for our lesson on French baguette versus la tradition . Marie splits the tradition in two and presses down on it near each of our ears so we can hear the perfect crackling sound it should make before it fluffs back to its original form. “I will ruin your life,” she jokes, and she makes us try the tradition (which differs from the baguette) because each of us on the tour will never be able to find one back home!

Onto the banks of the canal, the heart of the Canal Saint-Martin district. If you’re a fan of Amélie , you’ll recognize this area as it’s the spot where she skips stones into the water! As mentioned earlier, the canal recently underwent a large cleaning this year, as it does every 10 years or so. Ordered by Napoleon I, legend has it that the French wine tax was used to build the canal in 1802. Today, you can go on a boat tour to get a closer view of its ports and bridges. If you’re a street art buff, there’s plenty for you to discover here on the many small streets that line the canal, including Paris’ Space Invader.

Like any good food and wine tour, we end our visit at La Vache Dans Les Vignes to sample several wine and cheese pairings. We sit at a lovely table overlooking the canal. What’s great about this place is that it doubles as a wine bar and shop. Buy a bottle to go or sit down and enjoy an array of cheese and charcuterie platters along with your wine. The first pairing we sample is a goat cheese – served on a chestnut leaf made to regulate the level of the cheese’s humidity – paired with dry white wine from the Bourgogne (Burgundy) region. The contrast of the moist cheese against the dry, terroir wine is perfect. We’re told that the reason we keep the same glass for the following tasting is because the glass is primed to receive the next wine. Okay, I’ll take it! Second is a Côtes du Rhône white wine and a Camembert cheese. Both the cheese and wine are lighter this time and become my favourite so far. The third and final pairing is a strong, full-bodied red alongside a Manchego cheese that has been washed in olive oil. It’s definitely the strongest, making it the perfect pairing to end on.

“the Canal Saint-Martin remains a neck of the woods that tourists don’t particularly add to their bucket lists, making it all the more interesting to visit” Spot on! I loved staying in that area. Canal Saint-Martin is a trending neighborhood filled with younger Parisians who are attracted to the cheaper rents, la branché (that's trendy in French ), the restaurant scene, and the canal itself. 14 Great Things About Canal Saint-Martin Paris

1. canals tour + seine river cruise.

This is a wonderful way to experience both the canal itself and the quartier it flows through. As a bonus, you also get to cruise along the Seine River. It's a leisurely boat ride on the canals built by the two Napoleons, underneath Place de la Bastille, through The Arsenal, and out along the Seine.

We like the afternoon version of this cruise that starts off on Canal du Ourcq in the middle of Parc de la Villette in the 19th. We recommend you take Metro Line 5 to Porte de Pantin and walk through the parc . If you've timed it right you'll be able to stop for lunch at Café de la Musique .

It's a real pleasure to be able to sit back and watch this part of Paris pass by. You'll go through the former port of Bassin de la Villette, through all locks on the canal, and go underground to Place de la Bastille before finally emerging into the Seine and eventually docking near Musée d'Orsay. Two-and-a-half hours of pure relaxation. (The morning tour goes in the opposite direction.)

3. Flaneurs & Fishermen

If you've ever seen the classic 2001 French film Amelie , you may recall the heroine, Amelie herself, skipping stones from an iron bridge that overlooks the canal. Like her, other Parisians love to relax along the canal's tree-shaded banks and you'll often see picnickers, poets, philosophers, and pêcheurs (fishermen) waterside. As a place to see and be seen Canal Saint-Martin is especially popular with the under-30 crowd. Despite its influx of flaneurs (strollers & pedestrians, like us), the canal remains charmingly calm.

As for the fishermen, we hesitate to guess what they might be catching!

At a fromagerie located just where Canal Saint-Martin dips underground, you meet an expert in the art of cheese aging to learn about the cheeses of France, how they are made, and how they are aged to perfection in fromageries such as this one.

In the aging room , you are introduced to Beaufort (a raw cow's milk cheese produced in the French Alps), Etivaz (a hard, raw cow's milk cheese made in the Swiss Alps), and five other cheeses. You learn the history, traditions, and techniques of French cheese production, sampling at every stage. Each cheese is paired with a French wine.

5. Hotel Marais Bastille

Despite the name, the hotel is neither in the Marais nor at Place de la Bastille , but near to both on tranquil Boulevard Richard Lenoir. This Canal Saint Martin quartier affordable hotel features a rooftop terrace, garden, and a library. It's just steps from the Metro (Bréguet-Sabin) with easy access to the Marais, the Bastille, and even the train stations Gare du Nord and Gare de l'Est .

6. two napoleons.

In 1802 Napoleon Bonaparte ordered the construction of Canal Saint-Martin. His vision was for this canal and others it connected with to become supply routes for Paris bringing in food, fresh water, and other goods. Under the guidance of of Pierre-Simon Girard, a top notch mathematician and road engineer, the canal was completed in 1825.

Barely half-a-century later, Napoleon's nephew, Napoleon III, undertook another massive modernization of Paris by building boulevards, parks, and sewers. When nephew's own engineer, Baron Haussmann , was in the process of creating the new straight-as-an-arrow boulevard Voltaire, instead of just building a bridge over the famous waterway, he sent the canal underground to create Boulevards Jules Ferry and Richard-Lenoir that now run above the subterranean canal.

7. Going Underground

It was an odd decision by Haussmann to send the canal underground. In fact, he had to dig the canal lower and modify some locks to accomplish this. Coming from the north, the canal now dips underground near Place de la République and continues on to pass beneath Boulevard Voltaire all the way to Place de la Bastille (passing pretty much directly under the column), dumping out at The Arsenal, where private boats are docked.

This cavern-like passage makes for an extremely interesting canal boat ride. Another positive result is the narrow strip of parks created on Boulevard Jules Ferry and on Boulevard Richard-Lenoir. There are paths to stroll along, benches where you can rest, and play areas for children.

With a great location near Square Jules Ferry in the happening 11th Arrondissement, there's a zen-like vibe at the Gabriel. The common spaces are welcoming with a clean design and relaxing colors. The modern rooms are decorated in a white-on-white palette and the minibar offers antioxidant drinks and teas. It's an easy walk to the Marais.

Hôtel du Nord was made famous by the 1938 French film of the same name. Le Jardin Villemin is a small but lush park on the banks of Canal Saint Martin at the corner of Rue des Récollets and Quai de Valmy (which runs along the west bank of the canal). Also along Quai de Valmy, but closer to the top of the canal, is Le Point Ephémère, a popular Canal St Martin venue for exhibitions, concerts, and events. It also has a lovely rooftop garden restaurant open during the summer months.

13. Alfred Sisley

Born to British parents in Paris, Alfred Sisley was sort of at the tail end of the Impressionists. Even though he spent most of his life in France, you can see in some of his work the influence of those British landscape painters of the 19th century. But Sisley was also influenced by, compared to, and overshadowed by Claude Monet.

Sisley was particularly attracted to water scenes — seasides, bridges, rivers, and by Canal Saint-Martin, and it's his 1870 painting of the canal that's shown here. But that wasn't the only time he painted the waterway. There's another 1872 Sisley of Canal Saint-Martin in Musée d'Orsay. Given that he produced over 900 canvases, it's likely that he did one or two others of the canal.

By the way, one of Sisley's paintings holds the dubious distinction of having been stolen three times , from the same museum, and recovered three times. Allée des peupliers de Moret , now in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Nice was first stolen in 1978 when it was on loan to Marseilles (recovered in a sewer), again in 1998 (stolen by the museum's curator!), and again in 2007 (recovered once more in Marseilles). The lesson? Keep your valuable paintings away from Marseilles!

14. Inspector Maigret

Long before the area was trending, Inspector Jules Maigret of the Police Judiciaire lived right on top of Canal Saint-Martin, or as near as one can get, on Boulevard Richard-Lenoir. Georges Simenon's fictional detective prowled the streets of a Paris that seems locked in the 1930s, even though the books were written right up until the 1970s.

Where exactly on Richard-Lenoir did Maigret live? Ahh, but that is the question that continues to intrigue readers.

Canal Saint-Martin is both a waterway and a district of Paris. The former is a 4.5 kilometre long canal that connects the waters of northeast Paris to the Seine via nine locks. Canal Saint-Martin begins where Canal de l'Ourcq pours into Bassin de la Villette up in the 19th Arrondissement, and the first lock is beneath Metro Line 2 at Stalingrad.

• The canal is drained and cleaned every decade or so. Not surprisingly, tons of treasure and trash (mostly trash) are uncovered.
• Canal Saint-Martin connects the river Seine to Canal du Ourcq in northeast Paris and, beyond that, to the river l'Ourcq, which meanders through eastern France, often paralleling but never quite joining the river Marne.
• The upper entrance of the canal is close to the Place de la Bataille de Stalingrad , up in the corner where the 10th meets the 19th Arrondissement.
• The Metro lines serving this quartier are Line 11 and Line 5, running along Boulevard Richard Lenoir.
• Canal Saint-Martin can be accessed from Paris Metro stations Stalingrad, Republique, Jaures, Oberkampf, Richard-Lenoir, Bastille, and Quai de la Rapée
• In that regrettable period of urban planning of the 1960s there was talk abroad — among François Mitterrand and his cadre — of filling in Canal Saint Martin to make way for a wide motorway. These guys were enthralled by that urban planning goon, Le Corbusier. ( See what he wanted to do to Paris .) Luckily good sense (or small budgets) prevailed.

Perhaps you’ll notice some locals playing boules in one of the sandbanks along the stretch of water, or maybe you’ll spot couples walking hand in hand along the river banks. Canal Saint Martin is in the heart of the 10th arrondissement , which in turn is one of twenty districts that make up the French capital. The area is located on the Rive Droite (right bank), which means that it’s to the North of the River Seine.

Far from the crowds of the Louvre and away from Paris’ most iconic River, the 4.6 km long canal stretches from the Canal d’Ourcq to the North, all the way down to the Seine in the south. The waterway was first constructed in the 19th century and is characterised by its straight stretches and iron-clad footbridges.

Completed in 1825, the purpose of the waterway was to increase the water supply in an ever-growing city with an ever-increasing need for freshwater.

The Canal was first commissioned by Napoleon I in 1802 to not only increase the amount of freshwater available to the population but to also provide water for fountains and street cleaning.

Since the time of Napoleon, and around the same time that all of the Haussmannian buildings were erected, the canal has been covered between Rue du Faubourg du Temple and Rue du Temple, mainly for space reasons! Nowadays, the Canal Saint Martin is where the locals hang out.

From Bastille, there is just a short stretch before the water reaches the River Seine. Today, the canal is drained every ten to fifteen years to allow for cleaning. And when this area is cleaned, you’ll never guess what they find!

Apart from all manner of bicycles, old furniture and sweet wrappers, the most recent clean in 2016 revealed things like a giant wheelie dustbin and even street signs. Long forgotten and lost items also included motorbikes, children’s toys, and more shockingly, even a gun.

Things to do along Canal Saint-Martin

If you’re looking for a lazy Sunday activity in Paris, then a stroll along St Martin’s water’s edge would be it. Filled with plenty of people-watching opportunities and ample space for Parisian-style picnics , head to the canal on a summer’s afternoon to waste away the day in a quirky spot in Paris.

One of the quirkiest things to do in this hip neighbourhood is to get on a barge and take a boat excursion along the water. Filled with things to see, a float down the canal will offer an entirely new perspective on the neighbourhood.

While there are plenty of boat cruises to be taken along the River Seine, book a River Seine Cruise from Parc de la Villette like this one which will take you through Canal Saint-Martin.

Of course, one of the best times to visit Paris is during the autumn (particularly towards the end of October and beginning of November when the fall foliage is at its prettiest) when the days are crisp and there’s no better time to relax under the heaters en terrasse among friends.

Well, Canal Saint-Martin is easily one of the best places to enjoy fall in Paris thanks to the sheer number of trees lining both sides of the waterfront.

All around Paris, you’ll find plenty of street art. From the well-known spray paint of Miss. Tic (plenty of her work can be found in the lost villages of Paris ) , to the ever-familiar Space Invader mosaics, the walls of the Canal Saint-Martin are quite literally awash with talent. In fact, the canal has inspired so many artists over the years that iconic names like Alfred Sisley have painted its watery depths. 

If you’re as much of a fan as houseplants as we are, then you simply need to check out Plantes Pour Tous during your time in the 10th arrondissement. In general, the houseplants are incredibly well-priced for central Paris and are typically between €2 and €30.

If you’re a bit of a movie buff, then you may well want to take the time to wander both sides of the waterway, all the while searching for filming locations along its two sides.

After all, iconic films such as Amelie (one of the heroine’s favourite activities is to skip stones along the water) , Hôtel du Nord, Les Malheurs d’Alfred, and L’Atalante.

In other art forms, Edith Piaf (who once resided on nearby Rue Oberkampf) sang about the canal in her song ‘Les mômes de la cloche’. If you want to discover more of Edith Piaf’s Paris, then you can head to Père Lachaise cemetery in the 19th arrondissement, where the iconic singer is now buried.

Of course, you can go on Seine River Cruises, but if you’re looking for a more off the beaten path activity while in the  10th arrondissement, then you might consider booking a dinner cruise on Canal Saint Martin.

Open ’til late each evening, Le Comptoir General is like no other Parisian bar you’ve ever been to. Inside you’ll find great music, an eclectic museum, and even better cocktails. I don’t really want to ruin the surprise, so you should probably go for yourself!

The concept of this takeaway pizza place is as outlandish as its name itself. And the idea is this: order and pay for your pizza at the counter. Then, you’ll be handed a pink balloon to take away and then you’ll go and sit somewhere along the water. Then, your pizza will be delivered to you once ready!

Named just like the film of the same moniker, Hôtel du Nord bar and restaurant are located in a picturesque place along the water’s edge. Head there to experience some traditional Parisian cuisine, or simply enjoy a coffee! You can even book to stay in this three-star historic hotel. Find all the details here.

As its name would suggest, this plum coloured bar is upbeat and quirky. Always filled with the sound of lively voices and the gentle background hum of music, it’s a place to see and to be seen. Well-reviewed, the coffee is great while the menu changes daily, meaning that no two visits are ever the same!

Though this South American food chain has several locations across the city, one of the prettiest restaurant interiors is that found next to Canal Saint Martin. Wander inside and you can expect to find a menu consisting of quesadillas, tacos, and some of the most delicious cocktails I’ve tasted in Paris!

This quirky sandwich shop is a rarity in a city where most cafés and bars serve full courses, even in the middle of the day in the high heat of summer. It’s the perfect place to grab some food to go and head out along the canal to find a great spot to sit and eat.

If you’re looking for some of the best vegan food in Paris, then you’ll find it at Asian fusion restaurant, Tien Hiang. While everything on the menu is vegetarian, only one or two dishes aren’t vegan, meaning that a meat-free menu is available every day apart from when the restaurant is closed on Tuesdays!

Where to stay near Canal Saint Martin

If you’re looking for a cool, hip, and trendy neighbourhood in which to base yourself in order to explore the wider Parisian area, then you need to look no further. After all, Canal Saint-Martin has great transport links to the rest of the city and has a plethora of bars and restaurants in which to enjoy good food and drink during the evenings. Although the Canal is not necessarily a must-see on any visit to the capital (if you’re a first time visitor to the city, then you’ll most likely want to see iconic sights such as the Arc de Triomphe and Eiffel Tower) , the water is best visited in the summer months, when the air is warm and daylight lasts well into the evening.

Weather-dependent, late spring and early autumn are also great times to visit the canal. Due to its long length and the way the St Martin neighbourhood cuts through an entire swathe of Paris, there are plenty of metro stations to choose from when you visit! Gare de L’Est (Lines 4 & 7) Republique (Lines 3, 5, 8, 9 and 11) Jacques-Bonsergent (Line 5)  and Goncourt (Line 11) are all nearby. Overground, the canal is close to the Gare de Nord train station.

Unfortunately, one of the best foodie spots in the 10e arrondissement is so popular and successful that it doesn’t even have to open on the weekend, which is when most people plan to visit the area.

Du Pain et des Idées  (literally translated into English as ‘Bread and Ideas’)  was founded by Christophe Vasseur (who formerly worked in fashion) close to two decades ago as an artisan boulangerie serving up traditional breadstuffs with some unique twists.

Though the boulangerie and patisserie is closed during the weekends, it remains one of the best bakeries in Paris . The true star of the show is that of the ‘escargot’ a viennoiserie which is so-called thanks to its circular shape.

The cool and trendy taqueria El Guacamole serves up a range of authentic Mexican food at incredibly reasonable prices. Easily one of the best cheap eats close to Canal Saint Martin, the best deal of all is to get the set menu which includes three soft tacos of your choice (though they’re all pretty delicious) served with a soft soda (also of your choice).

From Paris Seine…… To Saint Martin canal !

The cruise starts on the river Seine. Board in the Solférino marina, near the Orsay Museum, then discover the most beautiful monuments of Paris cruising by the Tuileries gardens, the Louvre Museum,” l’île de la Cité”, Notre-Dame cathedral and private mansions on “l’île Saint Louis” . Then, you head for the Arsenal Marina at the foot of “le génie de la Bastille”. You may know the monument, but you probably never went under it…

The boat rushes through the famous underground vault of Bastille(2km), with astonishing natural lighting. Then you encounter the locks of canal Saint-Martin : Temple’s lock, Récollets’ lock, Morts’ lock… The boat goes through the last lock, the Jaurès one, and you enter the Bassin de la Villette. Right after, you pass under the lift bridge of “la rue de Crimée”, and arrive in the Parc de la Villette, where you can access to numerous cultural activities.

From Saint-Martin canal… to Paris on the Seine !

Boarding takes place in the centre of the Parc de la Villette. The cruise starts by passing under the Crimée lift bridge and then along the Bassin de la Villette. You will live unbelievable moments crossing swing bridges and locks (écluse de Jaurès, écluse des Récollets…), driven with caution by our boat’s captain, all the way through the Arsenal Marina lock, cruising under the Bastille square.

At some point, the boat rushes through a mysterious underground vault, with natural lighting before entering the river Seine. Then, the most gorgeous monuments of Paris parade under your eyes : les mansions of l’île Saint-Louis, Notre-Dame cathedral, Louvre Museum, Tuileries garden… It is a ferric trip, magic and enchanted … You then arrive at the feet of Orsay museum, a few steps away from Saint-Germain-des-Prés.

It is rich of 9 different locks, 1 lift bridge and two swing bridges with a slope of 25 meters. On the canal St Martin, you will feel a warm and friendly ambiance, passers-by along the banks, anglers and numerous terraces, cafes and restaurants in particular in spring and summer. It used to be very popular and grass-rooted, but is now very trendy, hip and cool, with an authentic and romantic twist to it.
