Tributes have been paid to a 12-year-old boy and his grandfather who were found dead in their tent during a countryside camping trip.

Listen to this article

Described as an "emotionally-aware boy", Kaicy Brown and his grandad David Brown, 66, were discovered unresponsive in their tent during a family camping trip to Powys, central Wales, an inquest heard.

The pair were discovered lifeless in the idyllic spot, with an inquest now hearing the pair's death came as a result of suspected carbon monoxide poisoning from a small cooking stove.

The pair were found by the boy's uncle, who was staying in a nearby tent, after he went to check on the pair at around 11am on September 14.

Emergency services were called to the scene shortly after by the family, but crews were unable to save the pair.

Tributes have since poured in, with his school describing the 12-year-old as "kind, thoughtful" and "exceptionally talented".

Senior coroner Graeme Hughes told Pontypridd Coroner's Court that toxicology tests on the schoolboy's blood would reveal whether carbon monoxide was to blame.

The coroner told the family: "My deepest condolences to all of you for the loss of both Kaicy and David in such tragic circumstances."

Two fundraisers have since been set up in the wake of the tragedy, one of which is a Go Fund Me page created by a close friends Meachy and Abbie to cover the pair's funeral costs.

The page has so far raised £1,895 of their £5,000 goal.

The page notes that there are currently "disputes within the family" as to where the schoolboy will be laid to rest.

"The money raised will go towards funeral costs, a memorial and legal fees as Jess wants to bring her boy home, as there is disputes within the family about where he will be laid to rest.

"We don’t want her to go through anymore headache at this sad time," the page reads.

"Any donations would be greatly appreciated to help relieve the financial burden of this tragic accident, also to help many families in need."

A second Go Fund Me page will support David's widow, Mandy, created by Sonning Church of England Primary School that Kaicy attended up until starting secondary school a few months ago.

The page has now surpassed target, reaching £6,440, with a Facebook page and pointed people towards the fundraiser.

"We, as a community made up of parents, PTA members, staff, governors, colleagues, friends, local organisations and families, are coming together to show our love and support for the family at this tragic time, and let them know in our small way that we are here for them," the Facebook post read.

"Many people have reached out to ask what they can do, and how they can show their love, sadness, support and care for the Brown family at this unimaginably difficult time."

"As a school and local community, we have been rocked by the recent deaths of Kaicy (12) and his grandfather and guardian, David Brown.

"On Saturday 14th September, David and Kaicy were on camping trip in Wales with Kaicy's older brother and the boys' uncle (David's son). David and Kaicy were found unresponsive that morning, and the medical professionals currently believe David and Kaicy succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning."

"Kaicy and his brother both attended Sonning Primary School, with Kaicy only leaving the school in July 2023.

"Their grandmother and guardian, Mandi, is a teaching assistant within the school and has been a member of staff for over 20 years.

"Kaicy was a kind, thoughtful and emotionally-aware boy who lit up a room with his smile and good sense of humour. He was also an exceptionally talented artist and impressed us with his attention to detail and incredible commitment to his artwork. Many of his pieces are still hung proudly around the school.

"Memories of Kaicy’s fantastic starring role as Mrs Wolf, in the Year 6 production in July 2023, will always make us smile.

"His fashion show performance at our Year 6 residential was also thoroughly entertaining, combining his acting skills and sense of humour to put on a hilarious display for his peers and staff," the school added.

He told heartbroken relatives attending the hearing: ‘My deepest condolences to all of you for the loss of both Kaicy and David in such tragic circumstances.’

The coroners’ court was told an investigation was also being carried out into the death of Kaicy’s grandfather David who lived in Wokingham, Berkshire.

Mom Laughs to Keep Her “Sanity” When Kids Have Meltdown During Family Camping Trip

"May this life never find me."

Mustafa Gatollari - Author

Published Sept. 27 2024, 2:00 a.m. ET

On Dec. 4, 2007, country music star Trace Adkins released his famous track, “You’re Gonna Miss This.” The lyrics of the song hit a universal truth of life that can only be appreciated by folks after they’ve gotten a bit of experience in life.

And it’s because, in retrospect, everything almost looks better. The older we get, the more minuscule the majority of our grievances look. Oftentimes when we come out on the other side of a trying period in our lives, we later get hit with something even more devastating. Something that makes us look back when we were younger and wish we had those problems.

Adkins’s song is addressed to a kid who says that they can’t wait until they’re 18 years old. He tells the youngster in the track that they’re going to miss this time in their lives and that they should work to enjoy the moments that they’re currently in, instead of just letting life pass them by since their eyes are always on the horizon.

However, this video uploaded to TikTok user Brandelyn’s ( @brandelyn1 ) seems to be addressed, instead, to a mom a who is surrounded by crying children while on a camping trip.

@brandelyn1 ♬ original sound - Brandelyn

“You’re going to miss this,” Dad can be heard singing from off-camera as a cacophony of babies can be heard all crying in unison in the video. Mom sits with a baby in her arms. One toddler, seated near the ground wails as she feeds herself and cracks up laughing at the song.

“You’re going to wish these —” the man singing the track can’t even finish what he’s saying without joining in on the laughter as well.

“These are the good times. So take a good look, around. You may not know, this now,” he manages to continue as the woman bounces her baby up and down and looks around the campground.

She continues to find his decision to crack up laughing funny as she leans back in her chair and chews her food. “But you’re going to miss this,” he croons, carrying on with the song.

TikTokers who saw the video had a lot to say about this particular scenario. One person on the application thought that this was a surefire way to ensure that they ended up taking their own life: “Someone singing this to me during a meltdown would be my 13th reason.”

Another said that this scenario would probably be completely ignored by most Dads, who would go on to call this family camping trip as something they remember fondly: “Dad's POV: that was the best camping trip ever we should do this every weekend.”

Someone else wrote that they could understand why the mother in the video chose to laugh in this situation. It was an exercise in mental preservation to ensure that she ended up not losing her mind.

But there was also another user who replied to the video who remarked that they thought the couple’s ability to laugh and conduct themselves happily in what is clearly a stressful situation is an admirable quality.

“This is actually so sweet. Having a sense of humor through the tough moments is the mark of a great family,” they wrote.

And as it turns out, other folks have relied on this song to help keep their heads on a swivel when life seems especially stressful.

“My husband and I sing this song to each other in similar situations the laughter keeps us from crying. Lol,” one person wrote.

And then other folks said that while there were a lot of folks who told them that they were going to miss every single moment of their kids’ childhoods and yearn for those days to be back again, it turns out that there were a lot of people who said they weren’t so sure about that.

“My mom always used to tell me I’d miss my kids being young and … I do nottt,” one penned, saying that they’re happy to be out of the weeds when it came to their kids’ more tantrum-prone time periods of their lives.

Another echoed this sentiment, writing: “Mine are 15, 14, and almost 10. TRUST ME I don’t miss this.”

What do you think? Are you a parent who “misses” when their kids were younger and weren’t afraid to bawl their eyes out because Paw Patrol wasn’t loading as quickly as they liked? Or are you happy with where they’re at now?

Emergency services were called to the scene but the grandfather and grandchild could not be saved.

Senior coroner Graeme Hughes told the Pontypridd Coroner's Court a toxicology test would determine the carbon monoxide levels in the 12-year-old's blood.

He told family members: 'My deepest condolences to all of you for the loss of both Kaicy and David in such tragic circumstances.'

The court also heard an investigation was underway to the death of Kaicy's grandfather, David, who lived in Wokingham, Berkshire.

The inquest has been adjourned to a later date.

In the aftermath of the double tragedy, Kaicy's former primary school paid tribute to the 'exceptionally talented artist' who made friends easily and was 'loved by his classmates and adults alike for his easy-going nature and support for others.'

Two fundraisers have also been set up by friends and colleagues of the family.

One has been set up to help Kaicy's heartbroken mother, Jessica, who lost both her son and father in the 'unimaginable' tragedy.

The GoFundMe created by the grieving mother' friends, read: 'On 15th September the unimaginable happened to her son Kaicy, 12 and her father.

'They passed away from carbon monoxide poisoning on a camping trip.

'The money raised will go towards funeral costs, a memorial and legal fees as Jess wants to bring her boy home, as there is disputes within the family about where he will be laid to rest.

'We don't want her to go through anymore headache at this sad time.

'Any donations would be greatly appreciated to help relieve the financial burden of this tragic accident, also to help many families in need.'

Over £1,500 has been donated to the fundraiser, which has a £5,000 target.

A second  GoFundMe page to support David's widow, Mandy has also been set up by Sonning Church of England Primary School, where Kaicy attended up until a few months ago before starting secondary school.

In a post on Facebook, the school said the community was 'coming together to show our love' for the bereaved family.

The statement added:  'We, as a community made up of parents, PTA members, staff, governors, colleagues, friends, local organisations and families, are coming together to show our love and support for the family at this tragic time, and let them know in our small way that we are here for them.'

Kaicy and his brother attended the primary school, while their grandmother and guardian, Mandi, is a teaching assistant and has been a member of staff for more than 20 years.

A statement on the GoFundMe page paid tribute to the youngster, who was described as said: 'This is a desperately sad situation, not least of all because Kaicy was only 12 years old.

'We, as a school and local community of parents, friends and colleagues, are in shock, and we are all sending our condolences and deepest love and support to Mrs Brown, Reo and their family at this time.'

The statement went on to pay tribute to Kaicy, who was described as 'a true ambassador for the school' and 'a kind, thoughtful and emotionally-aware boy who lit up a room with his smile and good sense of humour.'

It added: 'He was also an exceptionally talented artist and impressed us with his attention to detail and incredible commitment to his artwork.

'Many of his pieces are still hung proudly around the school.

'Memories of Kaicy’s fantastic starring role as Mrs Wolf, in the Year 6 production in July 2023, will always make us smile.

'His fashion show performance at our Year 6 residential was also thoroughly entertaining, combining his acting skills and sense of humour to put on a hilarious display for his peers and staff.

'A gentle soul, Kaicy made friends easily and was loved by his classmates and adults alike for his easy-going nature and support for others.

'Kaicy always upheld our Sonning values and was a true ambassador for the school.

'Kaicy was one of those pupils who had such a bright future ahead of him and someone we always felt would achieve great things in his life – a thought which makes this situation even harder as we remember someone so special.'
