The TD Five Boro Bike Tour pedals across New York City on Sunday.

NEW YORK CITY — Get ready for pedal power to take over New York City’s streets.

More than 30,000 cyclists expected to join the TD Five Boro Bike Tour Sunday morning for a with a 40-mile ride from Battery City, through Manhattan, The Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn, and finally, Staten Island.

Find out what's happening in New York City with free, real-time updates from Patch.

Such a critical mass of bicycles requires an vast number of street closures and transit changes. After all, the tour promises riders an unparalleled view of New York City unencumbered by motor vehicles.

“For one day, the roads are yours, the bridges are yours, the City is yours—there’s no better way to experience NYC,” the event’s official website states.

More information about the race can be found on its official website .

Here’s what New Yorkers, whether pedaling or not, need to know.

Public Transit

A clear message to Bike Tour cyclists has come from MTA’s leadership: mass transit is the easiest and most sustainable way to the tour.

“Customers who want to take their bike onto the subway need to tap their OMNY-enabled device or swipe their MetroCard while the station agent watches, rotate the turnstile, then enter through the station service gates once they are activated by the agent,” an MTA release states. “For safety’s sake, customers should carry, not roll, bikes down stairs."

Riders who want to take their bikes to the tour’s start near Battery Park are encouraged to use these stations:

  • Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall, 4/5/6
  • Bowling Green (Bowling Green Park entrance only), 4/5
  • Chambers Street, 2/3
  • Chambers Street, J
  • Chambers Street, A/C
  • World Trade Center, E
  • Cortlandt Street, R

MTA officials ask cyclists not use the following stations, which are not well-equipped to handle large volumes of bicycles:

  • Fulton Street, 2/3/4/5/A/C
  • Wall Street, 2/3
  • Wall Street, 4/5
  • Park Place, 2/3
  • Rector Street, R
  • Whitehall Street, R

Passengers can click here and check “Current Service Status” for bus routes affected by street closures.

Metro-North and LIRR trains will suspend limits on bicycles and recommend that cyclists use a bungee cord to secure their bike while on the train.

Bridge Closures

The Verrazzano-Narrow Bridge’s lower level headed into Staten Island will be closed until 7 p.m., as will the BQE’s westbound approach to the bridge, MTA officials said.

Other Verrazzano lane closures are, as detailed by the MTA:

  • One lower level Brooklyn-bound lane from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • The Bay Street exit from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • The 92nd Street entrance ramp to the Staten Island-bound lower level from approximately 12 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Belt Parkway entrance ramp to the Staten Island-bound Lower Level from approximately 12 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • The Lily Pond Avenue exit from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The Robert F. Kennedy Bridge’s southbound FDR Drive ramp will be closed from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., with all traffic headed south required to exit the bridge at East 125th Street, officials said.

The Hugh L. Carey Tunnel’s exit headed west onto the BQE will be closed 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., officials said.

Five boro bike tour to return to full capacity in may.

' src=

The Five Boro Bike Tour will return to full strength next month after two years of pandemic limbo, and cycling honchos say participants this year will not only get to enjoy the event at capacity, but also an extra hour of car-free streets.

The tour — which, as its name suggests, visits all five boroughs — is once again open to its capacity registration of 32,000 participants, after being cancelled altogether in 2020 due to the COVID-19 lockdown, and featuring a diminished ridership of just 20,000 in 2021, and a later-than-normal August date. The event, which began in 1977, comes back to New York on Sunday, May 1.

With the extra hour in place, participants will be able to choose from a greater number of “waves” with which to start the tour, which organizers say will reduce congestion and allow for a more pleasant experience.

“The extra hour is a game-changer for the riders of the TD Five Boro Bike Tour,” said Ken Podziba, president of event organizer Bike New York, in a statement. “The ability to spread out the start waves means less congestion, plus additional space to soak in the amazing views and enjoy a more leisurely, free-wheeling ride. This year’s Tour will be the best one yet, and we’re grateful to Mayor [Eric] Adams, [Department of Transportation] Commissioner [Ydanis] Rodriguez and all our government partners for working with us to infuse an exciting, new liberating feel to the Tour experience.”

Organizers have not yet released the route for this year’s pedaling palooza, but, as in previous years , the program will begin in Lower Manhattan and end on Staten Island. Last year, the route started at Manhattan’s southern tip and traveled up to Harlem, crossed the river for a brief layover in the Bronx before returning to the east side of Manhattan, after which riders crossed the Queensboro Bridge and cycled through waterfront nabes in Queens and Brooklyn. Finally, riders trekked across the Verrazzano Narrows Bridge to the finish line in St. George, Staten Island.

All streets along the route are closed to motor vehicle traffic so bike riders can peacefully and safely navigate the city.

The $112 entrance fee is steep, but the fee supports Bike New York’s charitable mission to provide free bike education courses to children and adults throughout New York City. The non-profit claims that its educational programs, administered at “community bike education centers,” reached up to 30,000 New Yorkers in 2020.

The entrance fee includes snacks, water, and “entertainment” at rest stops along the route, access to free bike repairs, and entry to the “finish festival” at the end of the circuit on Staten Island.

TD Five Boro Bike Tour 2022: Annual event returns in full force this Sunday

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- After being forced to limit capacity during last year’s event, the TD Five Boro Bike Tour, the nation’s largest charitable bike ride, is returning in full force this year.

The annual bike tour was cancelled in 2020 due to the outbreak of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, before returning in a limited capacity last year to allow for appropriate social distancing.

Now, with high vaccination rates and lower levels of viral spread, the popular event will once again be operating at full capacity, with 32,000 cyclists from all around the world expected to participate.

“We’re back and better than ever,” said Ken Podziba, CEO and president of Bike New York. “The opportunity to ride car-free through the five boroughs of the most exciting and diverse city in the world is why the TD Five Boro Bike Tour has become our country’s most popular bike ride.”

The event will take place on Sunday, May 1, from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The 40-mile tour spans the city’s five boroughs, beginning in Lower Manhattan and traveling north into the Bronx, before heading to Queens, Brooklyn and, ultimately, crossing the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge and concluding in St. George near the Staten Island Ferry.

Click here to view a map of the route.

Unlike last year, all cyclists must be fully vaccinated against the coronavirus, and will be required to show proof of vaccination upon request from event officials.

However, cyclists will not be required to wear a mask while participating in the event.

As is the case each year, all proceeds from the TD Five Boro Bike Tour go toward Bike New York’s free bike education programs, which provide services to over 25,000 adults and children each year.

“Cycling is a great way to get around, stay healthy, and take care of our environment, and I’m so excited the TD Five Boro Bike Tour is getting back to full strength so tens of thousands of New Yorkers and visitors can be part of this great event,” said Mayor Eric Adams.

'This is a matter of equity, and it troubles me to see Staten Island excluded from such a positive citywide transportation program,' said the borough president.

Street closures Sunday as Five Boro Bike Tour returns

The Five Boro Bike Tour is returning Sunday, with tens of thousands of cyclists expected to attend the 40-mile charity ride to raise funds for free bike education programming.

The city will shut down major thoroughfares to facilitate the ride Sunday, including portions of the FDR Drive, the BQE, the Ed Koch-Queensboro Bridge, and the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge.

The programs supported by the tour reach 30,000 New Yorkers a year, according to Bike New York, the nonprofit that organizes the tour.

“The future of New York City is on two wheels,” Mayor Eric Adams said in a letter published by the organization. “Bike New York has been an important ally in our united mission to promote cycling, protect and empower bike riders in our city, and encourage forms of movement that reduce congestion and greenhouse gas emissions."

The city estimates 32,000 cyclists will take part in the ride, taking them from the Battery to the Bronx, back down the FDR Drive to the Queensboro Bridge and into Astoria before heading south through Brooklyn and ultimately over the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge.

A “Finish Festival” will be held at the 40-mile mark at the Empire Outlets shopping center in Brighton Heights, right around the corner from the Staten Island Ferry.

The MTA is encouraging cyclists to use the Metro-North and Long Island Rail Road to get into the city, temporarily suspending bike permit requirements Saturday and Sunday. Subway stations the agency prefers riders to use include Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall, Bowling Green, the three Chambers Street stops, World Trade Center, and Cortlandt Street.

The transit authority is also asking riders not use Fulton Street, either of the Wall Street stations, Park Place, Rector Street, or Whitehall Street "as they are not well-equipped to handle large volumes of bicycles."

Streets will be closed beginning at 7 a.m., and some will stay closed as late as 7 p.m.

Five Boro Bike Tour Map

About the five boro bike tour.

On the first Sunday in May, 32,000 cyclists of all skill levels come from around the world to roll through every borough of New York City on streets totally free of cars. For one day, the roads are yours, the bridges are yours, the City is yours—there’s no better way to experience the Big Apple. Produced in conjunction with the City of New York, the TD Five Boro Bike Tour is the world’s biggest charitable bike ride, with proceeds funding our free bike education programs. In 2014 alone, we taught bike skills to more than 16,000 kids and adults. When you ride with Bike New York, you’re helping us in our mission to empower more New Yorkers to grab life by the handlebars. via bike.nyc

Five Boro Bike Tour History

The event began on June 10, 1977 as the Five Boro Challenge with about 250 participants. The original tour was 50 miles long and started and ended in Queens. What started as a one-time event became a tradition the next year when the New York City Mayor Ed Koch embraced the idea of a city-wide bike tour. The distance was shortened and the word “challenge” was changed to “tour” to make the event more appealing to the general public. That year, the number of participants increased tenfold to around 3000. via wikipedia

No Masks While Riding, But There Are Lots of Precautions

By Raanan Geberer Brooklyn Daily Eagle

Registration is now open for the 2022 TD Five Boro Bike Tour, which is to bicycling what the New York Marathon is to running.

Registration was delayed earlier this month due to the rise in COVID-19 cases associated with Omicron, but with numbers in New York and other parts of the country on the decline, Bike New York, the ride’s sponsor and its city partners are now opening registration for America’s biggest and best bike ride.

Additionally, after last year’s TD Five Boro Bike Tour was capped at 20,000 registrants and notably delayed until August, this year’s tour is scheduled in the spring on Sunday, May 1, and is planned for full capacity — with 32,000 cyclists riding.

The ride traverses all five boroughs. Shannon Jordy, a spokesperson for Bike New York, said the exact route is still being worked out, but it will likely be similar to last year. “Riders cross the Pulaski Bridge into Greenpoint, make their way through Williamsburg and past the Brooklyn Navy Yard into DUMBO before getting onto the BQE to the Verrazzano,” she said in an email.

All participants must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 to participate in the tour. Although bicyclists don’t need to wear masks while they’re riding, Bike New York says, masks are mandatory at the start area, at the indoor Finish Festival at the end of the tour, and at rest areas along the tour when they’re not eating or drinking.

According to the Bike New York website, “Any human-powered bike (recumbent, unicycle, tandem, tricycle, etc.) is permitted. Also, based on changes to NYC law , you may now use a pedal-assist e-bike in the tour.”

Finally, The tour welcomes participants from dozens of countries in the world. All participants who finish the tour will get medals.

“We’re back and better than ever,” said Ken Podziba, CEO and president of Bike New York. “The opportunity to ride car-free through the five boroughs of the most exciting and diverse city in the world is why the TD Five Boro Bike Tour has become our country’s most popular bike ride. And knowing the proceeds from the Tour fund Bike New York’s free bike education and safety programs makes it even more meaningful.”

“As a regular cyclist myself, I encourage every New Yorker who can to grab a bike, and I hope this event will motivate more of our neighbors to give it a try,” said New York City Mayor Eric Adams . “Cycling is a great way to get around, stay healthy, and take care of our environment, and I’m so excited the TD Five Boro Bike Tour is getting back to full strength so tens of thousands of New Yorkers and visitors can be part of this great event.”

The TD Five Boro Bike Tour is the premier fundraising event for Bike New York, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit committed to empowering New Yorkers to transform their lives and their communities through cycling. Proceeds from the event directly fund free public bike education programs for more than 30,000 adults and kids throughout the five boroughs.
