boat tours from Catania, Sicily

Straddling the eastern seaboard of Sicily, bustling and beautiful Catania is the second-largest city on the island (behind Palermo) and plays a role as the main departure point for some of the best boat trips in Sicily – or, on this side of the island, at least.

Flanked by imposing mountains and marine reserves, and sitting a stone’s throw from foreboding Mt. Etna, Catania is a hodgepodge of Sicilian culture, cuisine, and architecture. The city’s Duomo di Sant’Agata is an 18th-century baroque cathedral with elaborately decorated façades, while inside the church, you’ll find the tomb of Vincenzo Bellini, a famous Italian composer born in Catania.

No trip to Catania is complete without sampling some of the city’s fresh seafood. So before you hop on a boat tour to explore what the region has to offer, make sure to head to one of the many restaurants lining the seafront for a lip-smacking feed (or go direct to the source at the ever-lively Fish Market behind the Duomo.

1 – Aci Trezza

Aci Trezza boat tours from Catania, Sicily

Intertwined with tales of Ulysses and the Sirens, the seafront village of Aci Trezza is one of the most beautiful coastal towns in Sicily. Sitting over on the eastern side of the island, the jagged coastline and unique rock formations have been created over time by lava flow from Mount Etna – towering high above the town and the coast, the volcano (which remains one of the world’s most active volcanoes to this day) continues to be a foreboding backdrop to the landscape.

While easily accessible by car from Catania (about a 30-minute drive), the best way to explore Aci Trezza is by boat. Several companies offer day trips from Catania that include a stop at this historic locale, as well as other nearby attractions such as the stunning ‘Cyclopean Isles’ marine reserve and Ulysses’ Caves, where a striking palette of dark blue, green, and bright turquoise waters beckon (did someone say snorkeling?).

As you cruise around the coastline, your friendly and knowledgable crew and captain will point out other notable rocks and points of interest; you’ll have the chance to sail under the medieval castle of Acicastello, a Norman fortification built in the 11th century that sits on a rick high above the cobalt-blue sea.

In the castle’s foreground are characteristic “pillow lavas”, formed due to the rapid cooling of underwater eruptions – just one of the many unique geological traits of this volcano-carved region. And, depending on your tour, you might get out a little further up the coast to admire the natural archway of Grotta Isola Bella up close.

scuba diving in Aci Trezza

History aside, because of its unique landscape and juxtaposition with vibrant yet clear waters, Aci Trezza is a popular spot for scuba diving and snorkeling. So if you’re interested in exploring the beautiful underwater caves and rock formations, several companies offer day trips from Catania which include time to explore below the surface. Or, if you prefer to stay relatively dry, you can also hop in a pedal boat and glide around the shoreline that way!

When you’re not admiring the views from the boat’s decks, swimming with the colorful sea life, or working on the tan, you’ll be digging into a hearty lunch and sipping on local white wines. With appetizers, pasta with seafood, fresh fruit, and delicious wines included in the package to quench any thirst and satisfy any hunger pangs, a day trip from Catania to Aci Trezza is an ideal way to explore this picturesque part of Sicily.

Most Aci Trezza boat tours from Catania last about 8 hours (a full day). Prices start at around €80 per person but can vary depending on the season, the particular tour you choose, and any extras that you might want to add on (such as scuba diving, hikes around Mount Etna, or a tour of the village).

One of the most beautiful boat trips in Sicily, Aci Trezza is a surefire hit for all kinds of tourists from near and far. Whether you choose to explore by boat or by car, you’ll be amazed by the stunning scenery and fascinating legends that this place has to offer.

2 – Cyclops Islands

Cyclops Islands boat tours from Catania, Sicily

Steeped in mythology had hauntingly beautiful, the Cyclops Islands are a group of three small islands (although some might consider them more like giant rocks rather than your traditional island) off the coast of Aci Trezza that date back some 500,000 years.

Best known for their dramatic cliffs, rows of basaltic columns, crystal-clear waters full of marine life, and rich history, the islands – which are actually the remains of ancient volcanic eruptions – are a must-visit when in Sicily.

The largest island in the area is called ‘Isola Lachea’ and is home to a small church that’s worth checking out. With a handful of huts and homes built on the rocky facade, it makes for a great photo-op. The other island, while uninhabited and rawly natural, are equally as stunning, with high cliffs that plunge into the deep blue sea below.

And, for all of you history buffs, allegedly these isles were once formed part of the mainland of Sicily – they play a role in the age-old story of Homer’s Odyssey, one which your crew will gladly unpack.

boat tours in Cyclops Islands

While you can certainly admire the islands from afar, the best way to experience their natural beauty is from below the surface! Beneath the waterline lies a beautiful lavic seabed full of marine life, underwater canyons, and volcanic faults just waiting to be discovered. So, if you’re a fan of snorkeling or scuba diving, make sure to add the Cyclops Islands to your list.

Several companies offer boat tours from Catania (and other nearby towns) that will take you out to the islands for a day of swimming, sunbathing, and exploring. Prices start at around €40 per person but can vary depending on the tour operator and what’s included in the package (for example, some tours might include an authentic buffet lunch or a handful of boozy drinks on the boat).

Keep in mind: often combined with exciting journeys to the Cyclops Islands, the Timpa Nature Reserve boasts a handful of wonderful walking paths where grey volcanic rocks contrast beautifully with the lush green plant life. So pack a pair of walking shoes in case your tour includes some time on land too.

boat tours from Taormina, Sicily

Sitting about halfway between Catania and Messina, on the northeastern side of this paradise island, sleepy Taormina is one of Sicily’s most popular tourist destinations – and it has been since as early as the 19th century.

While the town itself is lovely, it’s really the breathtaking views that Taormina offers of Mount Etna – Europe’s tallest active volcano – and the azure waters of the Ionian Sea that make it such a special place to visit.

And while there’s merit in taking a day or two to explore the land-based attractions (from the historic Ancient Theatre of Taormina to the leafy villa Comunale or the romantic and colorful buildings along Corso Umberto, Taormina’s main street), once you get out on the open water, another slice of Sicily awaits.

There are a handful of great boat tours that depart from Taormina, taking advantage of the town’s prime location on the Ionian coast. You can book anything from a half-day tour to Isola Bella – an uninhabited islet located just offshore from Taormina that’s home to a small but beautiful nature reserve – to a multi-day excursion that explores the Aeolian Islands, a volcanic archipelago just north of Sicily.

Prices and itineraries vary depending on the tour operator, so let’s take a look at a couple:

3 – Isola Bella

Isola Bella boat tours from Taormina, Sicily

A small island off the coast of Taormina – a rare mix of rock, sand, and vegetation that’s connected to the beaches of the mainland by a slim pathway – Isola Bella is one of the most beautiful places in Sicily.

The island is home to a small but stunning nature reserve that’s perfect for a day of swimming, sunbathing, and exploring – both on foot on the island itself, and in the ultramarine waters that surround it.

If you’re pressed for time, several Isola Bella tours are over and done in just two hours, allowing you to catch the best of the island without having to commit to a full day on the boat. These tours typically depart from the Giardini Naxos port, with prices starting at around €25 per person but can vary depending on the tour operator and what’s included in the package (lunch, for example, might be an additional cost).

boat tours in Isola Bella

On the flip side, if you’re after a more comprehensive day out, plenty of multi-activity tours set sail from Giardini too, checking off a whole host of local natural landmarks.

Camera at the ready, because you’ll cruise by picturesque spots like Cape Schisò, Cape Taormina, Cross Rock, Prickly Pears Rock, the Cave of the Mermaids, Grotta Azzurra (the Blue Grotto), the Coral Cave, the Ziu Innaru Rock, and all the wonderful swimming spots of the Bay of Mazzaro.

With dramatic views of Mount Etna the whole way through, and the option to depart from Messina (which means more time on the water to chill out and soak in that glorious sunshine), these longer boat tours are ideal for those who want to make a day of it.

If you still want to explore Isola Bella but would rather save your Sicily boat tour for something a little more comprehensive, you can access the beautiful island (which is the literal translation, by the way) by taking the cable car on via Pirandello to Mazzarò and then turning right for a quick stroll of about 200 meters.

4 – Taormina Bay

Taormina Bay boat tours from Taormina, Sicily

Beloved by locals for its dramatic cliffs, hidden coves, and relatively still turquoise waters, the sparkling Taormina Bay holds its own as one of Sicily’s premier boating and snorkeling spots.

A number of boat tours depart from the port in Giardini Naxos with the express purpose of taking passengers out to enjoy a day of swimming and sunbathing in this spectacular location.

You can book anything from a two-hour tour (which should give you plenty of time to take a dip) to an all-day affair that includes stops at Isola Bella, Mazzaro Beach (another local favorite), and other nearby natural landmarks.

While you’ve got plenty to choose from (like luxury catamarans, private yachts, and budget-friendly motorboats), arguably the most popular option is by traditional sailboat. With group sizes capped to under a dozen, these small group boat tours provide a much-needed reprieve from the crowds of some of Sicily’s more popular tourist destinations.

boat tours in Taormina Bay

That being said, you’ll still have plenty of time to enjoy the company of your fellow passengers, as most sailboats include a large shaded area where you can sit back, relax, and soak up those incredible views.

Besides the chance to admire natural landmarks along the coast – the warm bays of Spisone and Mazzarò, the enchanting Blue Grotto, and rocky Isola Bella, to name a few – you’ll learn sailing basics from the skipper and learn all about Sicilian culture, history, and mythology along the way.

With snorkeling equipment, a range of snacks, and ice-cold drinks or locally made wine available on hand to epitomize what vacation is all about, the Taormina Bay tours make for a wonderful day out on the water.

As with Isola Bella tours, prices for Taormina Bay boat tours vary depending on the tour operator and what’s included in the package (food, drinks, etc.), but compared to some of the other boat trips, sailing puts its hand up as one of the more affordable options.

5 – Lipari and Vulcano

Lipari and Vulcano boat tours from Taormina, Sicily

Ask any vagabonding traveler who has covered the eastern side of Sicily and they’ll shout it from the rooftops: the two most popular – and, arguably, the most beautiful – of the Aeolian Islands are Lipari and Vulcano.

The irregularly-shaped Lipari island – the largest of the archipelago – is home to many sheltered coves and beaches perfect for swimming, as well as a dramatic volcanic landscape that’s just begging to be explored. With a slew of stratovolcanoes, craters, and lava domes around every corner, it really is a landscape unmatched by many.

Vulcano, on the other hand, which is directly below Lipari, is where you’ll find one of Sicily’s most active volcanoes (with a name like Vulcano, which is named after the Roman god of Fire, how could it not be?). Spread across the island are four unique volcano formations: Vulcano della Fossa is the biggest, Vulcanello is the youngest, Monte Aria is the tallest, while the shape of Monte Saraceno sticks out as rather peculiar.

Two unique islands side by side, this dynamic (or should we say volcanic) duo is easily accessed from the port towns of Milazzo, Messina, or Taormina, where a range of tour companies operate regular boat services to both islands (and a few of the smaller, lesser-known ones surrounding them too.

boat tours in Lipari and Vulcano

Tours typically include stops at Panarea and Stromboli (the latter of which is one of the most active volcanoes in all of Europe), as well as plenty of time to enjoy these two natural wonders – including swimming in the waters as well as exploring the old town of Lipari and stretching the legs on land.

Lipari and Vulcano might just be some of Sicily’s best-kept secrets, but with their unique landscapes, ample opportunity for swimming and sunbathing, and active volcanoes, plus hearty lunches, drinks included, and a friendly crew who’ll go out of their way to ensure your day is one to remember, it’s no wonder they’re becoming increasingly popular tourist destinations.

Prices will vary based on the tour operator you choose, but with several affordable options available frequenting these UNESCO heritage islands, this boat trip (or bus plus boat, depending on your tour choice) should definitely sit high atop any Sicilian bucket list.

6 – Stromboli and Panarea

Stromboli and Panarea boat tours from Taormina, Sicily

Following on from Lipari and Vulcano, two dramatic – and, justifiably, most renowned – of the Aeolian Islands are Stromboli and Panarea.

The first stop on this tour is usually the latter. A summertime tourist Mecca (yet, oddly enough, rather dead in the winter), Panarea is the smallest, chic-est, and most exclusive of the Aeolian Islands – for that reason exactly, it’s become somewhat of a celebrity hotspot in recent years.

That being said, it’s still quite a relaxed place with many idyllic coves and beaches to enjoy (get to Cala Junco if you can!), as well as some excellent restaurants should you find yourself peckish.

After you’ve anchored and soaked in some sun on the ship’s decks, you’ll have some time to wander around the island itself. The car-free, whitewashed streets of San Pietro make for a pleasant stroll, eventually leading to the village’s tiny church that dates back to the 19th century. And while you’re there, for a quick overview of the island’s history dating back to the Bronze Age, pop into the Panarea Museum.

boat tours in Stromboli and Panarea

Once you’ve got the lay of the land on Panarea, perhaps with a bit of sunbathing or snorkeling in the bays along the way (depends on which tour you book) it’s a short boat ride over to Stromboli – an island that’s home to one of Europe’s most active volcanoes (and has been since 1932).

Once you’ve got the lay of the land on Panarea, perhaps with a bit of sunbathing or snorkeling in the bays along the way (depends on which tour you book) it’s time to move on to Stromboli, a roaring volcanic island whose reputation precedes it as one of the most active volcanoes in all of Europe.

Often dubbed the Lighthouse of the Mediterranean for its frequent light show – that is, lava show – this bombastic Aeolian island shows off its eruptions frequently (usually around every half hour), making for a dramatic and jaw-dropping spectacle, especially after sundown.

Your captain will escort you to the best viewpoints around the island (typically Sciara del Fuoco), so be ready to capture bright explosions of hot redd lava and rocks, against the contrasting backdrop of the starry night sky.

Keep in mind: while these boat tours usually depart from the Port of Milazzo, they’ll pick you up and return you to central Taormina by bus – taking all the hassle out of planning your adventure!

boat tours from Syracuse, Sicily

A hop, skip, and a jump away from the volcanic islands of northern Sicily, tucked away down in the southeast corner of the island you’ll find the city of Syracuse. One of Sicily’s – nay, one of Italy’s – most underrated tourist destinations, this historic town is home to a number of incredible archaeological sites that date back to Ancient Greece, not the least of which being the huge Neapolis Archaeological Park.

As well as being able to explore the extensive ruins of Greek temples, an amphitheater, and a necropolis in the park itself, within Syracuse’s old town – or Ortygia – you’ll find even more delights such as the Cathedral of Syracuse (housed in a former Greek temple), the Maniace Castle, and the Fountain of Diana.

On land, it’s a treat for history buffs. On the water, it’s a treat for any and every kind of traveler. That’s right, as well as being home to some of the best archaeological ruins in Sicily, Syracuse is also a great base for exploring nearby natural landmarks like the postcard-worthy Cave of Pillirina, the enormous elephant-esque Scoglio dell’Elefante rock formation, varying nature reserves, and of course, all the stunning bays and inlets that surround the UNESCO landmark that is the Città Vecchia (Old City) region.

With a number of different boat companies offering day trips from Syracuse to the islands, you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to planning your itinerary. Whether you want to explore an ancient ruin, take a dip in the crystal-clear water, or simply while away a lazy afternoon on the bow of a boat, there’s an island tour for you.

7 – Ortigia

Ortigia boat tour from Syracuse, Sicily

While Syracuse bout tours are a dime a dozen, you’d be missing out if you overlooked one which included a stop at Ortigia.

With its mix of history, culture, and stunning natural cliffs, caves, and beaches, there’s something for everyone in this unique city, and what better way to explore it than from the comfort of a luxury boat?

As well as being able to moor up right outside some of Ortigia’s most popular attractions, Syracuse Gulf boat tours also often stop by a handful of sea caves. With a countless list in the area, you’ll have your own little slice of paradise, full of incredible stalactites and stalagmites, away from the inland crowds.

And once you’ve got your dose of underwater action, having snapped a few pics of the dramatic coastline along the way, you’ll (likely, depending on which tour you book) have a couple of hours to wander around the old town on foot – whether that’s part of a guided tour or solo.

boat tour in Ortigia

An undisputed highlight of the Syracuse region is browsing the vibrant open-air markets of the island’s old town, so make sure to pop by one if you can. Here, you can find everything from fresh produce to handmade ceramics, and it makes for a great place to pick up some souvenirs for friends and family back home.

When it comes to food, there are plenty of great options available. For something quick and easy, stop by one of the many pizzerias or gelaterias that dot the streets – you won’t be disappointed! If you’re looking for something a little more substantial, sit down for a leisurely lunch at one of Ortigia’s many restaurants and enjoy some traditional Sicilian cuisine.

Of course, if you prefer to have everything taken care of for you, consider booking one of the day-long tours that explores a wider range of the area and also includes a full lunch, with ample refreshing drinks to boot.

Hour-long sunset tours, dinner cruises, or full-day adventures that skirt far up and down the coast – whichever you choose, you’ll be grinning ear to ear by the time you dock.

  • boat tours in Ortigia

boat tours from Cefalù, Sicily

Flanking the northern Sicily coast and sitting in the shadow of a foreboding rocky butte is the medieval town of Cefalù – an eclectic mix of colorful houses, beautiful beaches, rich history, vibrant culture, and delicious food that’s become synonymous with Sicily and Italy as a whole.

With some of the best-preserved Byzantine mosaics in Sicily, as well as being of the world’s finest examples of Norman architecture, the UNESCO-listed Cefalù Cathedral beckons many a history-savvy traveler. Dating back to the 12th century, the stunning building is an icon of the city; yet it’s just one of the many characteristics that make this small town such a gem.

Despite being oftentimes overshadowed by its more famous neighbors, Cefalù is a destination in its own right and one whose winding Mediaeval streets are well worth exploring.

From the city’s main beach, it’s a short walk to the old town – meandering through quiet streets and alleyways lined with traditional shops and restaurants before arriving at the cathedral square.

Once you’ve checked off the main island landmarks, it’s then onwards to the water where the beauty dial is turned up to eleven…

8 – Cefalù coastline

Cefalù coastline boat tours from Cefalù, Sicily

Short and sweet, usually lasting no more than three or four hours, Cefalù coastline boat tours offer curious travelers the opportunity to discover the highlights of the city’s dramatic shoreline in a relatively short space of time.

Ideal for those who want to make the most of their time on the island and see as much as possible, these tours are great value for money, with most companies including an English-speaking guide to provide commentary, fun facts, and fascinating stories along the way.

Before returning to port, you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy a swim and snorkel in the sparkling Tyrrhenian Sea – weather permitting, of course. What’s not to love?

boat tours in Cefalù

As with most boat tours in Sicily, the price of your ticket will usually include refreshments such as water, soft drinks, fresh fruit, and a classic Italian aperitif.

And, if you’re up for letting your hair down, some tours offer an open bar for you to really get into the vacation atmosphere before hitting up one of the city’s revered bars (Jureka Wine Bar and Quid Cocktail Bar are two excellent choices) post-tour.

If you’re looking for something a little more low-key after docking, consider taking a leisurely stroll along Cefalù’s promenade – a lovely place to watch the world go by and soak up that notorious Sicilian charm.

  • boat tours in Cefalù

boat tours from Trapani, Sicily

Sitting on the coast in northwest Sicily, the city of Trapani is the beating heart of the province with the same name. It’s a place where time-honored traditions and heritage are celebrated, while also playing host to a more modern way of life – one that’s built on a foundation of good food, great wine, a hell of a lot of salt production (dating back to the 15th century, if you don’t mind), and even better company.

As you’d expect from a city with such a rich history, there are plenty of things to see and do in Trapani. From exploring the ancient streets of the old town to wandering around the salt flats (hence the salt production) and marveling at the views from atop Mount Erice (head up to the summit via the cable car), there’s something for everyone in this underappreciated town.

And, of course, no visit to Trapani would be complete without taking a boat trip around the stunning coastline that this part of Sicily is so renowned for. Whether you’re looking to relax on a sandy beach, swim in warm waters, or explore some of the area’s hidden coves and caves, there are plenty of boat tours to choose from.

9 – Egadi Archipelago

Egadi Archipelago boat tours from Trapani, Sicily

Sitting not too far off the western seaboard, about halfway between Trapani and the larger city of Marsala, the Egadi Archipelago is a group of five small and diverse islands that have – largely thanks to their pristine beaches – become a favorite destination for both locals and tourists alike, with Trapani serving as one of the main gateways to these verdant isles.

While each island has its own claim to fame, with unique combinations of natural and manmade attractions, two in particular – Favignana and Levanzo islands – attract the bulk of the attention.

On the former, the diversity of beaches impresses many a tourist: with hot spots like Cala Azzurra, Cala Rossa beach, Lido Burrone, Calamoni beach, and Praia beach, you’ll uncover everything from dunes to cliffs, golden sands, and rocky shores.

As the most populated of the islands, its manmade attractions are nothing to scoff at either. Namely the Tonnara of Favignana, an ex tuna factory turned fascinating museum whose exterior garners equal interest to its contents.

boat tours in Egadi Archipelago

Meanwhile, Levanzo, which is made up almost entirely of white limestone rocks, boasts several natural caves, is relatively untouched by modern technology and feels like you’re stepping back in time into a pure slice of Mother Nature.

Whichever island you find yourself on during your time in the Egadi Archipelago — or, since you’ll be on a boat tour, likely at least a couple of them! — you’re sure to be blown away by the dramatic limestone cliffs that jut out of azure waters, the serene beaches where sunbathers lounge in blissful tranquility, and the general feeling of being a million miles from civilization. Throw in the Aragonese Castle in Marettimo, and you’ve got quite the diverse day out on the water island-hopping!

  • boat tours in Trapani

10 – Mothia and Marsala salt flats

Mothia salt flats boat tours from Trapani, Sicily

While there’s nothing wrong with sun-kissed beaches, turquoise waters, and hill-mounted castles, sometimes it’s nice to mix things up a bit. And that’s exactly what the brightly-colored Mothia and Marsala salt flats offer.

A visit to these natural wonders is an excellent way to learn about Sicily’s long and varied history while also getting some fresh air and enjoying the great outdoors. The Mothia salt flats, in particular, are of great archaeological interest as they were once the site of an ancient city that was destroyed by a volcanic eruption in the 16th century.

On that note, if your particular boat tour includes some free time to walk around, take some time to explore the open-air museum where you’ll find ancient ruins left by the Carthaginians, Phonecians, and ancient Greeks.

Nowadays, you can explore the ruins of this long-forgotten city and learn about its role in Sicily’s past while also taking in sweeping views of the surrounding landscape. And if you’re feeling adventurous, you can even go for a swim in one of the natural pools that have formed among the ruins!

boat tours in Marsala

Meanwhile, at the Marsala salt flats, you can observe firsthand how salt is still produced using traditional methods that have been passed down through generations.

You can also savor some of this delicious product by enjoying a meal at one of the on-site restaurants where everything from pasta dishes to desserts are made with fresh and local Marsala salt. Plus, with other islands in the area (Stagnone, Santa Maria, and Schola), you’ll walk away with a broad overview of western Sicily.

So, if you’re looking for a boat tour that’s a little bit different from the rest, with a color palette of pink salt basins, blue lagoon waters, and white salt flats, be sure to add a visit to the Mothia and Marsala salt flats to your itinerary! Since the crew takes care of all the logistics and transport for you (and throws in a few snacks and drinks along the way), you’ll be able to sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride.

Boat Rental in Sicily

boat rental in Sicily

We’ve dove into the best boat tours in Sicily, and clearly, regardless of where you’re staying on the island, there’s a tour (or ten) that suits your fancy. But what if you’re looking for something a little more hands-on? Boat rental in Sicily is the way to go!

With so many islands to explore and countless coves and beaches to anchor at for a swim or some sunbathing, renting a boat is an alternative – and fantastic – way to see Sicily at your own pace. And with boat rental opportunities located all around the island, it’s easy to find one that’s close to where you’re staying.

Whether you’re looking for a small dinghy, a quaint sailboat, or a luxury yacht with all the bells and whistles (and one which you can even sleep on overnight), there are boat rental options to suit every need and budget.

But private boat rentals are more expensive, right? Well, not necessarily. If you’re traveling in a group (or manage to make a few friends on your journeys at a hostel or night out) you can easily split the cost of a boat rental, making it much more affordable. And with all the money you’ll save on accommodation by opting to sleep on your rented vessel, it might even end up being cheaper overall!

So if you’re feeling adventurous and want to explore Sicily from a different perspective; steering off the beaten path and away from the main routes frequented by tourist ferries and cozying up in a secluded cove all to yourself, consider boat rental during your stay. It’s an experience you won’t soon forget!

This experience, far from the hustle of crowded beaches and the frantic pace of the most visited cities, allows you to discover Sicily from an entirely new perspective, the sea.

Sailing along the Sicilian coast means immersing yourself in a parallel universe of crystal-clear waters, hidden coves, and breath-taking panoramas. Cliffs, promontories, and sea caves show the ancient story of a land shaped by the elements. These natural wonders, visible only from the sea, become the stage for unforgettable moments. Sicily, with its turquoise sea, secret coves, and golden beaches, is truly a natural, timeless masterpieces.

The Best Destinations for a Boat Trip in Sicily

Every stretch of the Sicilian coast tells a different story, with iconic places waiting to be discovered. From the marine caves of Levanzo to the sandy expanses of San Vito Lo Capo, each corner is a piece of a beguiling Sicilian mosaic. You can’t ignore the magical atmosphere of Stromboli at night, or the timeless charm of Scopello.

Here are some of the most beautiful places that Sicily offers for a guided or independent boat tour. And if you stay in one of our beachside villas, enjoying the sea and the beauty of Sicily will be even more convenient.

Boat Tours to the Aeolian Islands

The Aeolian Islands, located off the north-eastern coast of Sicily, form an archipelago of seven pearl-like islands set in the deep blue of the Mediterranean. Each island, with their individual charm and breath-taking landscape, offers unique and unforgettable moment for anyone who decide to explore this area by boat.

The active volcano of Stromboli is the main attraction of this island. A boat tour allows you to admire its majestic silhouette and, if you're lucky, witness the lava and ash explosions during its frequent eruptions. It is especially beautiful in the evening when the red of the lava contrasts with the starry sky, creating a natural spectacle known as the "Sciara del Fuoco."

The smallest of the Aeolian Islands is also incredibly chic. Its crystal-clear waters are dotted with small islets and rocks. During a boat tour, don't miss "Cala Junco" and the ancient ruins of the prehistoric village of Capo Milazzese.

Vulcano is famous for its geothermal activity. From the sea you can admire the Fossa di Vulcano, the last of its active craters. Thermal springs and sulphuric muds are an attraction for those looking for a rejuvenating and unique experience.

This green and lush island is famous for its Malvasia vineyards and offers beautiful bays like Pollara, made famous by the film "Il Postino”. From the boat, you can enjoy the view of its two mountainous volcanic cones, Monte Fossa delle Felci and Monte dei Porri.

The largest of the Aeolian Islands is a mix of history and natural beauty. You can admire the striking cliffs of pumice stone, hidden coves, and the Rocca, a promontory where the ancient acropolis stands.

Filicudi e Alicudi

The most remote and pristine of the island group, these islands offer wild and unspoilt landscapes. With its azure waters, the Grotta del Bue Marino is a highlight of a tour in Filicudi. Alicudi, on the other hand, is the ideal choice for those seeking tranquillity and authenticity.

Each Aeolian Island has a story to tell, a personality to discover. Among the many boat tours in Sicily , there are some that should not be missed. The Egadi and Aeolian Islands , for example, are a treasure waiting to be discovered. Sailing along the coast, you can visit sea caves and protected nature reserves. The Zingaro Nature Reserve , on the Trapani side, and the Vendicari Wildlife Oasis , near Syracuse, are among the most famous ones.

Those on the eastern side can visit the Riviera dei Ciclopi and the Caves of Ulysses starting from Catania . The names hark back to Greek mythology , which reports that the events of Odyssey took place here. Traveling to these places means immersing yourself in legend and admiring enchanting coastal landscapes.

Also on the coast of eastern Sicily, the bay of Taormina with its Isola Bella is one of the most popular destinations ever. And the same can be said of nearby Giardini Naxos . Further south, in the Syracuse area, one of the main destinations for boat trips is Marzamemi . From here you can reach the Vendicari Reserve , which encloses an important WWF-protected Wildlife Oasis . The view and environment here are absolutely spectacular!

The best boat tours on the western side depart from Trapani and Palermo . Sailing near the Sicilian capital, you can reach Mondello , Capo Gallo and Isola delle Femmine , or Mongerbino , on the opposite side of the Gulf of Palermo .

From the city of Trapani, it is easy to reach the Egadi Islands , which are by far one of the most popular destinations for boat tours. Also in the Trapani area, San Vito Lo Capo is another well-known tourist resort, famous for its beautiful beaches and crystal clear waters. Many boats also leave from here for the Zingaro Nature Reserve and other interesting destinations such as the tuna fishery in Scopello and Castellammare del Golfo .

The Egadi Islands of Favignana, Levanzo and Marettimo are famous for their clear waters and untouched nature. Boat tours to the Egadi Islands stop at the most picturesque bays and coves that can only be reached by sea. Favignana is the main island and the preferred destination for disembarking and discovering the mainland. But Levanzo , with its picturesque and colorful village, is also worth a visit. The starting point for reaching the Egadi Islands is the port of Trapani .

The Aeolian Islands are volcanic islands located in the Tyrrhenian Sea, opposite the northern coast of Sicily. The archipelago includes the islands of Lipari, Alicudi, Filicudi, Salina, Panarea, Vulcano and Stromboli . The latter two are active volcanoes and, in addition to offering breathtaking scenery and dark sandy beaches, are interesting destinations for science and geology enthusiasts.

Lipari is the largest of the islands and the one with the most important population center and a variety of beaches. Panarea is the smallest and most “glamorous” of the Aeolian Islands. It is a destination for elite tourism and is known for its elegant residences with gracious terraces overlooking the sea. To reach the Aeolian Islands , boat tours often leave from Milazzo , in the province of Messina .

Given the wide variety of destinations, prices for boat tours in Sicily vary widely and depend on the location, duration, type of boat, and type of trip. First of all, you’d have to choose between private tours and group tours. Of course, the former cost more because they involve renting the boat for exclusive use .

To give you an idea: a (group) sailing trip to Favignana and Levanzo starts at 80 euros per person. The same tour but on a dinghy costs 60 euros . Prices fluctuate according to low, high or very high season.

Boat tours are among the most popular experiential gifts. They are suitable for everyone, provide relaxation, tranquility and comfort, and make it possible to visit dreamy places. Who doesn’t like them? A boat tour can be a suitable present for any occasion, from birthdays to anniversaries . It is an original idea for a graduation gift or if you simply want to spend the day differently.

For special occasions, you may want to opt for a boat ride with apéritif, dinner or lunch on board . And if you really want to go big, you could gift a weekend or week-long boat vacation . In short, there are solutions for all tastes and budgets. Just decide on the departure point and get ready to sport the best swimsuit!

09 Aug 2022 | Egadi Star yacht day tour to Levanzo and Favignana with lunch

Beautiful swims

The admin was pretty easy and the tickets all available on the day. We set off on the ‘yacht’, which was really a motor boat, and sat upstairs. The announcements were quite hard to hear from the speakers but we arrived at our first swim destination which was beautiful. When we asked for our snorkelling kit which was supposed to be provided we were only given a mask and there were not enough for all. nnThese were really the only issues we had though. The crew on board were extremely helpful especially with one of our party who was a vegetarian. The wine was ok and the food was delicious. The swims were all in the most beautiful of clear blue seas and the 2 hours in Favignana were a chance to have a look around some shops and sit and do some people watching!nnAll in all a great day out. Special thanks to the ladies of the crew. You were both fantastic.

21 Oct 2023 | Dinghy day tour in the Zingaro Nature Reserve with lunch and aperitif

Spectacular day

My husband and I had the pleasure of spending a day with skipper Rino and 2 other very pleasant people on his brand new dinghy full of options and comfort on 30/9. We set off from San Vito lo Capo and then headed for the Zingaro reserve, Scopello and Castellammare tuna fisheries, passing through all the wonderful coves. The landscape left us open-mouthed, and the company crowned this day as the best ever. All topped off with excellent wine, grapes, and local specialities such as pane cunzato, bread and panelle, and sfincione, all offered by the legendary Rino. Various bathing stops with the availability of masks and floats. On the return trip, an aperitif with wine and chips with a breathtaking view of San Vito lo Capo. An unforgettable day and contact saved in the address book for the next holiday!

15 Aug 2023 | Half-day motorboat tour of the island of Salina

Very positive experience

Excellent organisation, seriousness, professionalism, clarity and completeness of communication and information to the customer. The excursion by sea to the island of Salina, carried out through a local agency, was really beautiful and evocative. It was not possible, however, because of the wind, to make the excursion to Vulcano, but from Freedome they promptly notified us and proposed a reorganisation of the trip for the following day. As we could not postpone due to previous commitments, from Freedome they were quick to make the refund. Everything was perfect. For future occasions we will have no doubt in using them again! Highly recommended!

19 Aug 2023 | Boat tour to the Zingaro Nature Reserve

Absolutely to do it again!

I would like to thank the entire organisation for this wonderful experience I had today. It was a very interesting tour, relaxing but also full of unforgettable moments! Starting with the swim in clean, clear water: the staff provided fins, masks and tubes to facilitate our exploration. Pr move on to the aperitif offered to us at the end of the morning: grapes, local products, wine, water... all very good! In addition, sunny music and the right company made this a truly unique experience! I thank Silvia for giving us the opportunity of a panoramic view throughout the whole trip! Thank you very much for everything! Highly recommended!!!!

10 Sep 2023 | O'Drafin boat tour and snorkelling in the Zingaro Nature Reserve

Beautiful experience by boat . They make you visit the entire gypsy reserve by sea, with the captain Michele super nice and helpful person who explains all the history and useful information of each cove. Super helpful person and very good aperitif with local bread tomato mozzarella as well as wine water and juice . Boat available with floats for those who can't stay too long in the deep water and masks and tubes for the more adventurous . Unfortunately, for timing reasons, it doesn't let you swim in all the coves but only the most beautiful ones, but the experience is definitely worth it if you stay overnight in those areas.

17 Aug 2023 | O'Drafin boat tour and snorkelling in the Zingaro Nature Reserve

Beautiful and relaxing excursion rated 10+++++

Fabulous experience, our commander Michele made us live a joyful and relaxing experience. The various coves where we stopped are nothing short of fabulous, the aperitif of cunzato bread and white wine was suuper good!nFor those who are not very practical in deep water but cmq knows how to swim (but also those who do not), supplied with tools to stay afloat and relax in addition to masks to see the beautiful backdrops of the various creeks. Experience that I will definitely do again and I recommend it to everyone both young and old. Thank you very much to the commander and keep it up. Alessandro from Milan

Aegadian Islands is a group of 5 islands off the northwest coast of Sicily, near the cities of Trapani and Marsala. The islands include Favignana , Levanzo , Marettimo , set in the beautiful crystal clear waters and home to a rich flora and fauna. These features attract lovers of snorkelling, diving and sailing.

In Trapani area, just few kilometres far from San Vito Lo Capo , you can explore the Zingaro Reserve and Scopello . Here beautiful beaches and rocky bays can be reached along rather steep paths. A boat excursion is the perfect way to enjoy the coast and swim in different bays.

In times past, tuna fishing and the mattanza were practiced in this area. Mattanza is the traditional ritual of killing the tuna trapped in the nets). Today you can see the ancient Tonnara both in Favignana and in Scopello.

What clients says.

Our trip to Taormina, Sicily was perfectly executed with the assistance of Simona and her crew at Tripping Sicily. Our 7 day adventure with our knowledgable guides toured us through Taormina where we learned of the Roman Theater, Church Santa Caterina, Piazza Belvedere and Piazza Duomo. We hiked up to the summit of Mt. Etna and learned of the volcanos history with our experienced guide Roberto. We traveled to Catania and experienced the fish markets and local flavors in the surrounding street food and finished at Acitrezza. Also toured the small town of Savoca, where they filmed the wedding and bar scene from the Godfather movie. My favorite event was the Sicilian cooking class we enjoyed at a private Villa. All of this and more was all perfectly executed through Tripping Sicily. They coordinated the transports, tour guides, and touring events perfectly. Thank you...for the great memories.

We had a fantastic day trip on Gullet Jonio. The crew couldn’t have been nicer and were amazing with our kids. It was a wonderful end to our holiday in Sicily and we couldn’t have asked for anything more from the Captain and his crew. Thank you again, we would recommend them to all.

Simona Ferro was a spectacular guide. Very knowledgeable with a great personality and a great sense of humor. If their is a better guide that her I'd like to meet them. Simona ROCKS!

We used this company while In Taormina, Sicily for a week and worked with Simona and it was absolutely perfect start to finish! From airport transfers with the most friendly drivers to touring with incredible interesting guides to fun cooking classes, climbing spectacular Mt Etna, wine tastings, grotto boat tours, touring where they filmed “The Godfather” as well as handling first class restaurant reservations…we just cannot say enough how easy she made it for us! We absolutely loved everything she planned for us! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!! Simona is the BEST!!

My Favorite Airbnb Experience: A Sailing Trip to Sicily’s Egadi Islands

When my family and I decided to spend a week in Sicily this summer, I quickly carved out a mental image of the trip. There would be plates of bright red tuna crudo, the cold fish drizzled with olive oil and sprinkled with salt flakes. There'd be a house —something spacious, with a huge table for enjoying glasses of Mount Etna–made wine around in the evenings. And there would most certainly be a day on a boat. We'd dip our toes into the dazzling blue Mediterranean and feel the salty air hit our faces, and it would be the definition of vacation.

Sicily boat tours are quite popular: Travelers can book a sailing excursion, private or with a group, and sail around smaller islands off the coast. For those staying in northeast Sicily, the Aeolian Islands are the go-to; we were staying in the northwest, a great jumping off point to the Aegadian Islands . ( Traveler has previously dubbed the archipelago an “ oasis of wild Italian living ,” which was more than enough to sell me on a visit.)

As a group of six adults, we wanted to book a boat experience before touching down in the destination—we were traveling in peak season, after all. Luckily, we found an experience with Egadi Boating on Airbnb , through which host Daniele (or one of his colleagues) would take us out on the water for a day. We'd sail from the charming seaside town of Trapani , on Sicily's western tip, to the Aegadian Islands, with stops for swimming, snorkeling, and lunch on Favignana.

With over 100 reviews, and a near-perfect average rating of 4.84 stars, it should come as no surprise that the experience was a highlight of the trip.

Bookable on Airbnb these boat tours take travelers from western Sicily to the dazzling Egadi Islands.

For nearly eight hours, my family—plus six other guests, with whom we became fast friends—basked in the sun and sea, making stops along the coastlines of two islands, Favignana and Levanzo. We pulled into cyan-colored bays, where we leapt into the water and watched silvery fish swim past through our snorkels (which were provided on board). We anchored beside an old tuff quarry on the south bluffs of Favignana, where we swam to shore and padded through cool caves studded with fossilized shells. Come lunch, we docked by Favignana's former tuna cannery, where we were given a couple hours to explore on shore—we had uni-rich pasta at a small trattoria, followed by crisp Erse white wine on lounge chairs at Camparia .

In the afternoon, we had a chance to swim through caves on Levanzo, plucking tiny mollusks known as patella from the rocks and popping their briny insides into our mouths (not everyone was a fan, but it was fun to try). When we plopped on board after our fifth and final stop, our sunburns starting to tingle, the crew surprised us with Aperol spritzes (soda, beer, and water were also included throughout the day).

The whole experience ran us less than $100 per person (prices change based on date, and the number of spots you book)—a steal, I thought, for such a full, seafaring day. You could book the entire boat out for around $1,400, but we were happy to share the space with others; when you're spending a week with the same people, especially family, it can be nice to mingle with others for a bit. Our fellow passengers, all from various parts of Europe, were such great company; we were laughing at jokes they'd made through the rest of the trip.

Are there other companies that offer similar Sicily boat tours in the area? Most definitely—you could likely show up and ask your hotel or Airbnb host to help you book one. You might be able to snag spots for your whole group; you might not. You also might get any variable of the experience, for better or worse. For us, it was important to be able to book advance, and Daniele and his team took such great care of us. I don't think it could have panned out any better.

LOCAL FISHING IN TAORMINA BAYS

Dawn or dusk are the best times to appreciate Sicily. The smell of the sea air, the breeze, the red glow of the sun rising or setting on the horizon and the anticipation of knowing you may be about to catch one of the jewels of our beautiful waters. Local fishing gives you the chance to experience all of this with the help of a local fisherman who will reveal his secrets for a perfect catch. For the fishing trip you will embark on a local goiter led by a skilled professional fisherman who will take you inside the bays of Taormina for a duration of about 3 hours. The sites are all near coastal cliffs with depths between 15 and 30 meters. You can fish with a fishing rod or troll for bream, bass, garfish, squid or other small and medium sized fish.

TIPS: Once back on dry land, your catch can be cooked in a nearby restaurant where your friends can share your experience and appreciate your newfound skills.

Duration:  3 hours. We recommend starting at 07:00am or 30′ prior to sunset. Boarding:  Giardini Naxos harbor Services included:  skipper, fuel, soft drinks, all equipment for fishing. Maximum capacity 4 guests On request:  Transfer by Sedan or Minivan – Hotels in the Taormina Area> Giardini Naxos Harbor – round trip.

Fishing trip game in the bay of Taormina. Private local fishing tour with traditional Sicilian boats led by local fishermen. A "Gozzo” of a typical Sicilian fisherman with freshly caught fish.

BIG GAME FISHING

The big game fishing is aimed only at tuna, swordfish, imperial needlefish, lampuga, alalunga. In order to profitably practice this fishing technique it is sometimes necessary to move away many miles from the coast. The equipment consists of the use of reeds ranging from the “lightest” 8/12 pounds up to 50/80 pounds, chosen in proportion to the distance from the coast, the depth of the seabed and the prey that you want to undermine. Cruising far from the coast you can contemplate the majesty of Etna that dominates the landscape from any point and admire the black lava cliffs. On request you can taste the the fish you will have caught on board. Marine areas: according to the period of the year and the rules for fishing the sea stretches vary from Taormina to Brucoli (SR).

FROM TAORMINA TO SIRACUSA BY SEA. THE THE SOLE AND EXCLUSIVE FULL DAY CRUISE TO THOSE WHO ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT THE SEA

Going to Syracuse by sea is certainly another emotion. Tested by the Greeks for 2500 years who obviously preferred it to land. It is a navigation of 55 miles in a straight line, which means about 2’30min with good weather and sea conditions. The Etna volcano majestically dominates the landscape. For those wishing to split up the cruise, it is also possible to pass through the islands of the Cyclops and stop for a swim and a break based on local fruit and DOC wine. Another recommended stop is the enchanting bay of Brucoli. Obviously, by stopping in one or both of these fabulous corners of Sicily, time will dilate by at least an hour. So the choice is yours alone based on the time you want to dedicate to visiting Siracusa and where we will moor in any case so that you can visit the island of Ortigia, a destination celebrated on a par with Taormina. The choice of typical fish-based restaurants is endless. A truly unique cruise, the top things to do list extensive. Consider that you are about to visit one of the Unesco sites of Sicily. Book now, we will define each option together; or arrange it directly with the crew as soon as on board.

TIPS: Don’t make many stops along the cruise if you want to have time to visit the Archaeological Park of Neapolis or the Greek theatre, the Ear of Dionysius, the Grotto of the Nymphaeum.

From:  09:00am to 7:00pm Boarding:  Giardini Naxos harbor Services included:  crew , open bar (soft drinks), Sicilian seasonal fresh fruit On request:  Transfer by Sedan or Minivan – Hotels in the Taormina Area> Giardini Naxos Harbor – Roundtrip. Siracusa- Arenella - Yacht Day cruise

FROM TAORMINA TO THE CICLOPI ISLANDS

A yacht day cruise along the bays of Taormina is definitely one of the best things to do if you aim for a day is relaxing, sunbathing and swimming. But the port of Taormina in the bay of Giardini Naxos is also a starting point for a cultural experience, a boat trip toward the Ciclopi islands. A totally different scenery, dominated by the majesty of the Etna volcano that makes the coasts a landscape stained with black, unique in the world. Along the cruise we will meet some fishermen villages, still intact in their traditions. Stazzo, Santa Tecla, Capomulini and the enchanting Timpa Nature Reserve up to Acitrezza and its Cyclops islands, surmounted by the medieval manor of Aci Castello. A corner of Sicily preserved with rigor being one of the 100 most beautiful protected marine areas in the world. In Acitrezza, passing right inside the islands we will land in the marina and we will be immediately immersed in a magical atmosphere where the scent of fresh local fish dishes prepared by restaurants on the port reigns in the air, mixed with the scent of a clear sea. A fantastic itinerary in the footsteps of Ulysses of 20 miles from the port of Giardini Naxos or 12 miles from the “Porto dell’Etna” in Riposto (CT), to arrive at this wonder of the Cyclops islands; the volcanic rocks thrown by Polyphemus from the top of Etna as narrated by Homer in the “Odyssey”.

TIPS: Perfect for those who spend their holidays in Taormina and want to see more, feel more, cruise more through the Sicilian sea. Many local people have lunch in the restaurants in this area; grilled fish, king prawns…..you have to taste it!

7 of the best places to cruise in Italy

F ew countries can compete with Italy’s tourist appeal . Anyone who visits can enjoy fantastic cities, quaint villages, a string of picture-perfect coastlines, amazing cuisine and a fascinating history.

Alhough skiing , city breaks or a trip to one of the Italian lakes all have their own merits, there is a way to get a taste of several different parts of the country in one whirlwind trip.

Cruises around the Bel Paese give passengers the opportunity to see Italy ’s full range of sights. You can start with the romance of Venice and wind around to the rugged island beauty of Sicily and Sardinia, or begin surrounded by the stark coastal beauty of the Cinque Terre and end in hectic, characterful Naples , via the enchanting capital of Rome .

Whether you just want to see one destination or a handful, there’s likely a cruise to suit you; we’ve rounded up some of the best below.

Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast contains a little bit of everything that has made Italy so famous: beautiful coastlines, golden sands, picturesque towns, ancient historic sites and a hearty slice of la dolce vita .

The main towns along this coast include Amalfi, Sorrento and Positano , each renowned for offering a taste of the highlife in often luxurious surroundings, whether that be laid-back beaches or grandiose hotels. Pompeii lies close to these towns, offering an incredible insight into a famous bit of world history, while driving part of the Amalfi Coast’s winding roads is the best way to get amazing views while taking in some delightful towns.

How to do it

See both Sicily and the Amalfi Coast with the ‘ Amalfi & Sicily ’ seven-night package offered by Star Clippers. It starts in Civitavecchia, taking you to Amalfi and Sorrento before moving on to Messina and circling back to Rome.

Prices from £3,629pp including seven nights’ accommodation, all meals and drinks and select entertainment. Departing 6 July 2024.

The capital is a beautiful fusion of historic and contemporary Italian life, from the modern cuisine and nightlife of Monti to the old houses and trattorias of Trastevere or Parione.

The Eternal City is also Europe’s most landmark-filled destination , with everything from Roman ruins to 18th-century fountains. The Colosseum, Roman Forum and Pantheon are the undoubtably highlights, as are the Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain. The Vatican City is also contained within Rome, and you don’t want to miss the Sistine Chapel or St Peter’s Basilica.

Most cruises to this part of the country actually dock at nearby Civitavecchia, which is roughly one hour from the capital. Rome is often a starting point for cruises too, as passengers can head north to the Cinque Terre, east to Sardinia and south to Naples and Sicily.

The  Italian Treasures  cruise offered by Atlas Ocean Voyages begins in Valletta , the historic Maltese capital, but after departing very much focuses on the eastern Italian coast. It stops for a night in both Syracuse and Giardini Naxos (on Sicily), before departing to the Amalfi Coast and Capri and then finishing in the capital, where you can explore at your leisure before flying home.

Prices from £2,946pp including eight nights’ accommodation, all meals and drinks and onshore excursions. The company is currently running a promotion where the ‘second guest sails free’, so it is possible to get the entire package for just £2,946. Departing 1 September 2024.

Venice is perhaps the most beautiful of all Italian cities, situated on a vast lagoon and criss-crossed by dozens of bridges that hang over its canals. Its waterways are lined with the colourful facades of centuries-old buildings, many of which carry a Venetian style that is unique to the city, making for an eclectic cityscape.

A gondola trip, a stroll around St Mark’s Square, a walk over the Ponte Rialto and a visit to the Doge’s Palace are customary for those seeing the city for the first time, though for many the real attraction is getting lost in the sea of mazy alleys and historic bridges .

Many cruises start and end in Venice too, though due to its location at the top of the Adriatic, it can take a while to cruise down to other popular destinations like Bari, Sicily and the Amalfi Coast. If you’re visiting on a cruise, chances are it’ll be a longer one, or that it’ll stop in destinations in northern Croatia , Dubrovnik or northern Greece .

Azmara Cruises’ ‘ Italy Intensive Voyage ’ takes passengers all the way from Rome to Venice. It begins by going north to Florence , then turning back on itself and going south to the Amalfi Coast and Sicily. After a brief stop in Kotor, Montenegro , you’ll finish in Venice, with the opportunity to explore at your leisure before flying home.

Prices from £2,060pp including 10 nights’ accommodation, all meals and drinks, evening entertainment and select onshore excursions. Departing 10 April 2024.

Sicily is another of Italy’s famous islands, sharing a part of the Mediterranean with neighbouring Sardinia. It is equally as charming as Sardinia, and filled with similarly beguiling towns, a variety of natural landscapes and some of the finest culture and history that the country has to offer.

Tradition is paramount here, something that is reflected in a proud local populace. It is also visible in towns and cities like Palermo, and the timeless beauty of Syracuse, as well as on the olive groves and vineyards that dot the slopes of Mount Etna. It makes Sicily a great place to come if you want to see modern-day Italian living with a dose of outdoor adventure, in places like the Parco dell’Etna, along with historic charm (such as that at Syracuse).

Windstar Cruises’ ‘ Sicilian Spendours ’ cruise begins and ends in the Italian capital, but as the name suggests, this trip very much focuses on the largest island in the Mediterranean. It begins by heading to the Amalfi Coast, but then moves on to three Sicilian towns – Trapani, Porto Empedocle and Catania, via Gozo and Malta .

Prices from £3,105pp including 10 nights’ accommodation, meals and onboard entertainment. Departing 28 May 2024.

Sardinia, which sits off the eastern coast around six hours from Civitavecchia by ferry, is one of Italy’s most popular summer destinations. A favourite among both tourists and Italians, it is home to a slew of great beaches – including Cala Goloritzé and the Costa Smerelda – and so is a good choice for days spent flitting between water sports and lying in the sun.

Though it’s understandable if you want to spend most of your time here on the sands, it would be remiss not to visit some of the pastel-hued towns and verdant national parks that lie inland and on the coast. Places like Alghero, Bosa and San Teodoro contain plenty of history throughout their cobbled streets, while Asinara and Gennargentu are two of the most picturesque natural areas.

Sardinia’s southerly location means that cruises that stop here often carry on to Sicily and Malta, and may go further on to the Balearics, Greek islands or even Tunisia .

The ‘ Enchanting Italian Coastlines ’ tour from Emerald Cruises covers both Sardinia and the eastern coast over a period of seven nights. It begins in the capital, moving first to Sorrento and Amalfi and then crossing the Mediterranean to Sardinia and Corsica before looping back.

Prices from £3,379pp including seven nights’ accommodation, all meals and drinks and airport transfers. Departing 27 April 2024.

Cinque Terre

The Cinque Terre competes with the Amalfi Coast for the title of Italy’s most famous coastal area, but the Italian Riviera offers a different kind of beauty in its emerald waters and pastel-coloured towns. The region is part of Liguria, and consists of five villages: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore.

Each one has an abundance of old Italian charm, from the faded colours that come alive at sunset to the mazes of alleys leading up from tiny harbours. Only Monterosso has a proper beach, but this village quintet isn’t the place for solely a beach holiday, despite the coastlines. Instead, wander aimlessly through the villages, enjoy a laid-back meal or take to any of the surrounding hiking paths.

These once isolated villages are now tourist hotspots in their own right, with the Cinque Terre Express one of the best ways to get between them. Most cruises dock at La Spezia, the province’s main city, which lies just 20 minutes from the nearest Cinque Terre village, Riomaggiore.

The Cinque Terre is a less frequented destination on longer cruises, so the best bet is to visit as part of a multi-country cruise. Celebrity Cruises offers one such option with their ‘ Italian Riviera & France ’ package, which departs from Rome and initially heads south to Naples before circling around to La Spezia and Santa Margherita. After some time spent enjoying the Italian Riviera, you move on to the French one, seeing Cannes and Marseille before finishing in Barcelona.

Prices from £1,209pp including nine nights’ accommodation, return flights, all meals, daily activities and entertainment. Departing 4 June 2024.

Naples is a fascinating city, buoyed by a vibrant and chaotic energy and blessed with beautiful surroundings – including Mount Vesuvius and an azure bay – and an eclectic blend of architecture.

The city itself has a wealth of culture and history, from the recent and immaterial – such as its devotion to pizza or its football club – to the ancient and pertinent, including the Duomo cathedral and a large collection of Greco-Roman artefacts at the National Archaeological Museum. Be sure to talk a walk around the Spanish Quarter, Centro Storico and Spaccanapoli (the city’s main thoroughfare) to get a real sense of how life is lived in this hectic city.

Naples is the closest major city to the Amalfi Coast, and as such many trips here are combined with a visit to towns like Sorrento or Positano.

You’re spoilt for choice when including Naples in a cruise itinerary, and many cruises that stop here also include visits to parts of Greece and Croatia. A seven-day Mediterranean cruise from Norwegian Cruise Line takes advantage of these stops, taking guests from Rome to Venice via Valletta, Split and Corfu. Nevertheless, the focus is still on Italy, taking in the historic capital, the romantic canals of Venice and all of Naples’ characterful chaos (with an added stop in Messina, Sicily).

Prices from £1,573pp including seven nights’ accommodation, all meals and drinks and onboard entertainment. Departing 14 August 2024.
