For that reason, taking guided and preplanned tours instead of traveling independently can help you focus your trip on specific locations, theming your tour in a specific interest area and providing you with an expert guide who can help answer your questions and keep your interests at the forefront of their recommendations for your activities.

Booking expert guides also provides you with a seamless connection to the local community. If you don’t speak Italian, having a fluent local guide with direct connections to the community you’re traveling through will help you navigate your experience abroad. They can get you better deals, make sure you’re not being scammed by local townspeople, and provide you with the inside scoop on different travel and tourist destinations that you can visit and tour. In the event of an emergency, they can also serve as an advocate and translator for you, helping to connect you to any of the resources you might need.

Booking expert tours, whether these are 10-day Italy trips or daily food tours of Florence , means trusting people who know Italy to recommend the best places for you to visit and the most efficient combination of sightseeing stops for you to enjoy. Your pre-planned tour has been carefully managed down to the last second by an experienced team who knows what they’re doing.

This removes a huge burden off your shoulders, taking the nitty-gritty daily details and removing that responsibility from you so you can spend more time enjoying yourself and relaxing in your surroundings instead of worrying about getting from place to place. By trusting a tour guide from one of Italy’s best tours, you’re committing to a stress-free, exciting vacation that will provide you with a thorough look at the best Italy has to offer.

What a wonderful article to find for someone thinking seriously about visiting such a beautiful country. My wife has always dreamed of visiting Vatican City and Rome. I spent a year of my youth in Naples at 8 years old. Now that I am 75 it is good to see so many options besides hiking, biking, and climbing. There were a lot of options shared in this article. Thank you.

Thank you for your kind words, Bob! I am glad you found this article helpful and that you’re excited to visit Italy with your wife. There truly is no shortage of amazing things to see and do here, so I hope you and your wife come and have a fantastic time.

Ciao Angela, these are amazing tours in Italy, I also live in Italy and I’ve done most of these except Sardinia which I’m looking forward to taking the tours. Thank you for the many options.

Enjoy Sardinia 🙂 If you travel independently, you will definitely need to rent a car…

My first trip to Italy was a group tour. It’s a great way for inexperienced travelers to see many of the top sights of Italy!

True, it might give less freedom of wandering on your own but they take care of all the logistics.

All of these trips sound amazing – it would be a tough choice! I do like the sound of the food one though. Italy is such a beautiful country, I’d happily go back again and again!

5 Reasons to Choose a Guided Tour of Italy

  • Get your bearings and build confidence for traveling on your own – this is a great approach for first-time visitors to Italy who can use their tour as a launchpad for further adventures
  • See many sights within a short timeframe without worrying about logistics or finding and booking your hotels – guided tours of Italy have this all planned out so you can relax and enjoy your vacation
  • Access in-depth knowledge and local experiences – your tour guides are there to make sure you enjoy the best Italy has to offer. Many companies now add special local elements such as farm dinners and special stays to ensure your tour is packed with special memories
  • Meet like-minded travelers and form lasting friendships – tours are a great way to expand your social circle and meet people from all over the world
  • Manage your costs – often if you tried to do all the things included in the tour on your own, you would find the costs are much higher

How to Choose your Italy Tour

Firstly, decide when you want to go and how long to stay in Italy. Deciding when to go to Italy is often a challenge so read our guide to the best time to visit Italy to help you make your plans. It includes the best months for sightseeing and visiting the beaches and popular cities. Spoiler alert – we like late May and early October!

The length of your trip is also a consideration. Most tours run for between 7 and 10 days. Don’t forget to factor in transit time to and from your home country into your plans. You might also like to add a few days on your own to explore a little at your leisure.

Next, determine your budget. Most tours include land transportation only (not flights). So you’ll need to add the cost of your flights to Italy into your budget.

Click to search flight deals on skyscanner

As a general rule, large tour groups generally involving travel by bus are the most cost-effective. Smaller groups will attract higher prices but you will get more personalized service. Private and customized tours attract the highest rates.

Most importantly, know your travel style and how much assistance you want from a tour guide. There are fully guided tours and independent package tours for Italy to suit your preferences.

Things to look for

  • early morning starts and packed agendas – are you happy to be starting your days at 07:30 am or do you prefer a more relaxed pace with lots of time to explore on your own
  • hotel standard – are you prepared to save some money on hotels or do you like some luxuries
  • hotel location – if you’re hoping to explore, a hotel out of town may not be a great option
  • group meals or free time to organize your own dinners
  • inclusions vs optional extras – would you like to choose additional activities or be led the entire way – there are advantages to both approaches

Best sites to look for deals

Keep an eye on the tour company sites and sign up for their news. Offers are released regularly throughout the year. If you are trying to decide between a few tour companies and itineraries you can compare tour prices and trips on Tourradar  and Stride Travel . These sites have trip listings for departures up to 2024. You can read reviews by people who have experienced the tour and they often have great deals on early bookings and late departures.

Best Italy Tour Companies Reviewed

When you’re planning the trip of a lifetime, make sure you choose a reputable company for your tour of Italy. Here are some of the best and most trusted tour operators:

Trafalgar – with over 70 years of experience worldwide, Trafalgar is a popular choice for good reason. The company is expert at designing itineraries that visit the highlights of Italy in the most efficient way in terms of cost and covering a lot of ground. The company makes sure that you can enjoy local experiences as well as sightseeing.  For example, you can take advantage of their Be My Guest program, and dine with local families in their homes. Expect group sizes of around 40-45 and travel by coach.

Insight Vacations   – with a more leisurely pace and clientele in the 60-70 age bracket, Insight Vacations are more upmarket than Trafalgar. Hotels are 4.5* and their buses have been designed to allow much more legroom than on standard coaches.

Intrepid – the world’s largest small group tour company, Intrepid are one of our favorite providers. With group sizes averaging only 10 people, you can expect more personalized service and the ability to get off the beaten path. Intrepid have been recognized for their commitment to responsible travel and offer inclusive tours for all ages. They have over 50 itineraries for Italy with three different tour styles – Basic, Standard and Comfort.

Monograms – if you want to travel independently and plan your own spare time but want a set basic itinerary then Monograms is for you. They provide ground transportation, hotels and a brief tour at each place you visit. This unique service also includes a brief city tour and destination concierge who can help with dinner suggestions and other on-the-ground questions. With a variety of packages throughout Italy, this is a great solution if you’re finding researching your own trip overwhelming.

Contiki – aimed at the youth market aged between 18-35, Contiki tours generally attract under 30s making their first trip abroad without their parents. Fast-paced and intense with early starts and late nights, these trips are definitely made with a young party crowd in mind. Contiki offers a great budget alternative to DIY travel but if partying is not part of your travel style then think twice about joining a Contiki tour.

Rick Steves – if you’re a fan of America’s favorite Europhile, his company also offers group tours of Italy. With mid-sized tour groups of fewer than 30 travelers, they are a more intimate experience than the larger group tours. The price range reflects this midpoint. People traveling on these tours are usually American, aged 50+ and are interested in history and culture.

Onwards Through Italy

We hope you have found a tour of Italy to suit your travel style, timing, and budget. If you can spare a few extra days, why not add some additional time to the end of your trip to explore at your leisure? Your tour will give you the confidence to discover treasures of your own. If you’re looking for something more bespoke, there are many reasons to consider a private tour of Italy . Whatever you decide, Italy is waiting.

Nomadic Matt: Travel Cheaper, Longer, Better

The Best Tour Companies in Italy

The historic architecture of Italy at sunset

Italy is home to incredible food (give me all the gnocchi and wine), rolling green hills, cultivated vineyards, stunning lakes and mountains, a long rich history dating back thousands of years, and a welcoming culture.

It is one of the most dynamic countries in the world and will live up to all the hype you’ve heard. It’s composed of 20 different regions, each with its own unique culture, cuisine, wine, and landscape. Italy is basically a confederation of different regional “countries and cultures.”

Because there’s so much to see and do in Italy (and not everyone has a lot of time), many travelers decide to take tours when they visit Italy.

I’ve visited Italy on my own and with tour companies.

And there are A LOT of tour companies in Italy. (Like way, way, way too many.)

It can be very overwhelming deciding which Italy tour company to pick. I know — I’ve spent hours upon hours researching them all!

To help you plan your trip and really get beneath the surface of this amazing destination, I’ve compiled a list of my favorite tour companies in Italy.

Whether you’re looking for a basic walking tour or a multi-week excursion, these companies are the ones I think offer travelers the best experience at the right price.

Here are the best tour companies in Italy:

1. Walks of Italy

If you’re looking for something a little more in-depth than a free tour, my favorite walking tour company in Italy is Walks. They are one of the largest day tour companies in Italy and offer tours in eight cities across the country.

What makes them so special is that they get access to places other companies don’t, including before- or after-hours visits to some of the most popular sites in Italy (such as an early-access tour of the Sistine Chapel before it opens or a Colosseum at Night Tour , where you’ll see where get to experience the arena after it closes).

They are true experts and I love their tours. They are my favorite tour company in Italy. Most tours last around four hours and start at around 40 EUR per person.

Book here!

2. Tours by Foot

For free walking tours in cities around Italy, check out Tours by Foot. They organize tours (or collaborate with companies that run tours) in Rome, Florence, Milan, Sorrento, Naples, and Venice. You’ll be able to get a solid overview of each iconic city thanks to knowledgeable local guides. These free tours are 2-3 hours long, making them a great introduction to each destination. Just be sure to tip your guide at the end!

If you prefer to go at your own pace, they also highlight companies that offer self-guided audio tours and guides.

Devour is one of the most highly rated food tour companies in Italy. They’ve been featured in The Guardian, CNN Travel, Forbes, and many other popular publications. In short, they’re a perfect choice for anyone looking to really dig in and learn about Italy’s world-famous food cuisine.

I’ve been on their tours in both Italy and abroad and am never disappointed. The food tours, drink tours, and pasta-making classes are guaranteed to give you an authentic local experience guided by experts who truly know their topics.

They offer tours in Rome, Florence, Bologna, Naples, and Venice, with each tour generally lasting 3-4 hours. If you’re a foodie like me, their tours are a must!

Tickets start at 49 EUR per person and sell out fast, so be sure to book in advance.

4. Divina Cucina Culinary Experiences

Judy is an American expat who has been eating and drinking her way around Italy since the 1980s, and she has crafted some unique experiences for anyone looking to get under Italy’s culinary skin. Her private “Morning at the Market” tours in Florence will give you a nuanced look at Italy’s food culture and history, during which she shares her cooking tips and expertise. Judy also offers weeklong cooking intensives if you’re looking to really step up your Italian cuisine.

5. Travel Italian Style

My friend Cassandra runs this incredible bespoke travel company that creates customized trips to Italy. She’s been working in the tourism industry for well over a decade and has been to every single region of Italy. In short, she knows her stuff and can plan the perfect getaway for you. Vineyard tours, cooking classes, boutique accommodations — you’re guaranteed to experience life as a local with Cassandra’s tours.

If you’re looking for an immaculately curated upscale vacation to Italia, this is the tour company for you. She really knows her stuff!

6. Intrepid Travel

This is my go-to travel company when I’m looking for multi-day or multi-week trips. They employ local guides with incredible insight and appreciation for the communities they take you to, and the groups are never too big. Plus, they only run ethical tours with a small environmental footprint. I’ve gone on some amazing tours with Intrepid over the years, including to Jordan, Morocco, and Madagascar, and have never been disappointed.

They offer a variety of tour options in Italy, from a Best of Italy tour to a Hiking the Dolomites adventure. Tours last 8-15 days, with prices starting around $1,600 EUR per person.

Book Your Trip to Italy: Logistical Tips and Tricks

Book Your Flight Use Skyscanner to find a cheap flight. They are my favorite search engine because they search websites and airlines around the globe so you always know no stone is left unturned.

Book Your Accommodation You can book your hostel with Hostelworld as they have the biggest inventory and best deals. If you want to stay somewhere other than a hostel, use Booking.com as they consistently return the cheapest rates for guesthouses and cheap hotels. Some of my favorite places to stay are:

  • The Yellow (Rome)
  • Ostello Bello (Milan)
  • Archi Rossi Hostel (Florence)

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. My favorite companies that offer the best service and value are:

  • Safety Wing (for everyone below 70)
  • Insure My Trip (for those over 70)
  • Medjet (for additional repatriation coverage)

An Insider's Guide to Puglia, Italy — Incredible Pasta, Beautiful Beach Towns, and Boutique Hotels Included

This sun-drenched southern region offers the best of Italy with fewer crowds — at least in the offseason.

Elizabeth Heath is a writer and editor living on a hill in Umbria, from where she writes about travel in Italy, the rest of Europe, and farther afield.

Best Hotels and Resorts

Best things to do, best restaurants, what to buy in puglia, cities and areas to visit, best time to visit, how to get there, how to get around.

Michela Sieman/Travel + Leisure

Word is definitely out on Puglia, the long, narrow coastal region that forms the heel of Italy’s boot. No longer a hidden gem or best-kept secret, Puglia’s dramatic beaches, Baroque cities, and whitewashed trulli are splashed over many an Instagram feed.

Yet compared to other regions of Italy, Puglia — pronounced pool-yah — still offers travelers the Italian vacation experiences they seek, while skipping much of the crowds and chaos of better-known destinations. “It’s definitely less-visited compared to iconic Italian regions like Tuscany and the Amalfi Coast,” says Madeline Jhawar, owner and custom travel planner with Italy Beyond the Obvious . “And Puglia really does have it all: fantastic food and wine, spectacular countryside and beach scenery, and a deep and fascinating history.”

Our guide highlights Puglia’s appealing mix of scenery, history, cuisine — and let’s not forget the agreeable weather most of the year — and maps out how to make the most of a trip to this sunny region.

Top 5 Can’t Miss

  • At a hotel like Le Alcove in Alberobello, you can sleep in a trullo, a cozy, cocoon-like conical dwelling.
  • Sample orecchiette, Puglia’s signature ear-shaped pasta, at a traditional eatery like Osteria Le Arpie in Bari.
  • Make like an Italian at the mare (sea) and head to a lido (beach club) like the chic Pettolecchia near Torre Canne.
  • Buy Puglia’s prized olive oil directly from the source, at a family mill like L’Acropoli di Puglia in Martina Franca.
  • Take in the Baroque architecture of Lecce and prepare to be overwhelmed by its exuberant facades, altarpieces, and piazzas.

Borgo Egnazia

The established go-to luxury spot in Puglia, Borgo Egnazia is a sprawling and impeccably curated compound that ranks among Travel + Leisure ’s best resorts in Italy . T+L travel advisor Keith Waldon , founder and director of Departure Lounge , praises the outstanding service, where “privacy is guaranteed,” as well as the setting between the sea and the Valle d’Itria.

The six suites at this boutique hotel each occupy a whitewashed trulli, with cool stone floors, eclectic decor, and modern bathrooms. We love the almost mystical feeling of comfort these spaces convey, as well as the homemade breakfast and the location in the heart of Alberobello town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Courtesy of Masseria Torre Maizza

Masseria Torre Maizza

A 2020 standout for best new hotels , Masseria Torre Maizza owes its polish to Rocco Forte — expect the brand’s unmatched service and serene, Olga Polizzi-designed interiors that seem to embody a cool breeze. Waldon says the feeling here is of “living in a real luxury masseria like at home, and it’s the only property with its own golf course.”

Palazzo Sant’Anna

Set in Lecce’s historic center, Palazzo Sant'Anna is curated to zen-like perfection. Puglia travel advisor Ylenia Sambati refers guests here for the light-filled suites, many with exposed stone and wood beams, as well as balconies. “Wake up to birds singing and a colorful and bountiful breakfast prepared with love by owner Beatrice and her team,” she says.

Take a cooking class.

Yes, cooking classes are ubiquitous in Italy, but the traditional cuisine of Puglia stands out, even in a country of great food. Waldon says to “take a pasta-focused cooking class in a local masseria with a mama” and go home with some new skills. Sambati likes the friendly vibe and easy instructions offered by Cook In Puglia in Lecce.

Michela Sieman/Travel + Leisure

Relax at a lido.

Beaches in Puglia can be crowded in the summertime. Escape the ruckus at a beach club, or lido , such as Pettolecchia Il Lido , a luxury spot between Bari and Brindisi. Lounge beds, linen-clad gazebos, Frette towels, and waiter service set this one apart in a sea of beach umbrellas.

For families, try a trullo.

The cone-shaped trulli of Puglia’s Itria Valley are certainly unique, and according to Cherrye Moore of My Bella Vita Travel , they’re a hit with kids. “Families should rent a trullo villa and use it as a base for day trips to Alberobello, Ostuni, Locorotondo, and Monopoli. Many have pools and outside areas where the kids can run around.”

Head to the sea.

Puglia’s Adriatic coast is dramatic, especially between Polignano a Mare and Monopoli, where clear waters lap undulating cliffs and flow into the occasional sea cave. Both Waldon and Moore recommend chartering a private boat ( Cataurora is a good choice), either for a sunset cruise or a half-day tour with stops for swimming and snorkeling.

LaltroBaffo

Puglia’s seafood is almost as famous as its orecchiette, and both Sambati and Waldon heartily recommend trying it at LaltroBaffo , an Otranto restaurant helmed by chef Cristina Conte, who, with her young, passionate team, turns out sophisticated takes on traditional Salento recipes.

Taverna della Gelosia

Sambati loves this rustic tavern in Ostuni’s old town. “It’s a bohemian, Salento-style trattoria serving local recipes that are lightly revisited.” Taverna della Gelosia is tucked away amid a jumble of alleys and stairways, which makes its vine-covered courtyard all the more romantic on a summer night.

Osteria Le Arpie

Handmade, ear-shaped orecchiette is the archetypal pasta of Puglia, and its production centers around Bari’s centro storico . Osteria Le Arpie is about as old-school as it gets, and its seasonal orecchiette con le cime di rapa (turnip greens) is Puglian comfort food epitomized. Also look for dishes served with pane di Altamura , Puglia’s heritage bread.

Michele Ursi/Getty Images

Leather Sandals

“Puglia is famous for leather sandals, which you can find everywhere in local shops,” says Waldon. Erredibi is a top choice for handmade, locally made products, and they have stores in Brindisi, Ostuni, Lecce, and Otranto.

Primitivo Wine

“Puglia’s red primitivo wine, even when it’s just table wine quality, can stand up to reds from across the world,” says Moore. Combine some souvenir shopping with a winery tour and tasting at Masseria Li Veli , or just pop into a little grocery or enoteca to buy a few bottles to bring home.

“Ancient olive groves define the landscape of Puglia, and buying newly pressed EVOO straight from a producer is something special,” says Moore. “ Savoia offers well-organized tours and great oil, but don’t overlook smaller producers like L’Acropoli di Puglia in Martina Franca.”

“We always tell our travelers not to miss the incredible small city of Lecce ,” says Jhawar. “It’s referred to as the ‘Florence of the South’ because of its rich Baroque architecture.” Lecce’s soft limestone meant easy carving for 17th-century artisans and well, they went to town , as evidenced at Basilica di Santa Croce, the Basilica del Rosario, and the Duomo of Lecce.

Alberobello

“It's hard to recommend people skip a visit to the town of Alberobello, with its iconic trulli houses,” says Jhawar. But a lot of travelers have the same idea. “We always encourage our guests to combine Alberobello with less touristy nearby towns such as Locorotondo or Martina Franca.”

While much of the tourist buzz centers around the Adriatic coast and the trulli area, don’t sleep on Gallipoli, which Waldon calls “ the beach town of Puglia.” The Ionian coast town has ancient history, a quiet old town, a newer town brimming with life, and a nonstop Italian party scene in the summertime.

The Gargano

This picturesque promontory on Puglia’s northernmost coastline is dominated by Gargano National Park, where the scenery changes from beaches to mountains in just a few miles. For smaller towns, incredible biodiversity, more natural beaches, plus some dramatic sea stacks and cliffs, this is the region’s wilder side.

Francesco Riccardo Iacomino/Getty Images

Waldon recommends visiting Puglia in the shoulder seasons of April to June and September to mid-November in order to avoid the summer heat and crowds, as Puglia is a major holiday destination for Italians. Jhawar agrees, but adds that “Puglia is very lively during the height of summer, with many local festivals.” The takeaway? If you plan a summer visit, book your accommodations and rental car well in advance, and brace yourself for crowded — albeit gorgeous — beaches and towns.

The airports at Bari and Brindisi serve flights from within Italy and Europe, though many incoming travelers opt to fly into Rome’s Fiumicino airport and arrange a rental car or transfer from there. Both Trenitalia and Italo trains serve Puglia, though be aware that with historic hill towns, train stations are usually in the lower town, which might be several miles away from the centro .

Vincenzo De Palo PHOTO/Getty Images

You can get between Puglia’s major tourist centers via Trenitalia’s regional trains and a few private lines. But getting to smaller, rural destinations and more remote coastal areas is trickier by train. “We typically book private drivers or rental cars for our travelers,” says Jhawar. “Booking a rental car in Puglia is a decent approach — just make sure you know where to park in order to avoid the limited traffic zones found in most Italian cities.”

The Best Time to Visit Italy According to Locals

When’s the best time to visit Italy? With so many incredible places to visit in Italy, locals tell us it’s great all year round. But! There are definitely some things you should know before you plan your trip. With some local input, we created this guide to the best time to visit Italy.

When should I visit Italy?

Locals tell us when you visit Italy depends on your travel style. The most popular time to visit is in May, June, September, and October.

You’ll enjoy great weather during these months—but also more crowds and higher prices on accommodations, especially in top places to visit in Italy like Rome and Milan. Instead, you may want to visit in shoulder season (March-May and October-November) or even during offseason (December-February).

If you’re looking to savor an Italian summer and get off the beaten path, see what locals say about where to go to avoid the peak season crowds. Our locals in Italy can recommend spots you won’t find in a cursory Internet search.

Traveling to Italy in the offseason

Offseason Best Time to Visit Italy

Many places to visit in Italy are just as magical in the offseason as they are during peak season! Not only will you avoid contributing to overtourism, but you’ll avoid crowds and save money on travel. Not convinced? Our locals in Italy say these are more perks to offseason Italian travel:

A more local experience . Instead of being surrounded by tourists, you’ll interact more with locals—especially if you decide to explore places to visit in Italy that are small villages or hidden gems.

Cooler weather: Italy can get quite hot in the summer. Visiting in the offseason means you’ll find much more temperate weather. And if you’re worried about rain, well, many of the great things to do in Italy are actually indoors!

Autumn is harvest time. If you love Italian wines or olive oils, then keep in mind that these are harvested around October and November.

Skiing! Vacation doesn’t have to mean sipping Aperol Spritz in the sun (although that is pretty wonderful too). The Italian Alps are a great destination if you want to hit the slopes.

Italian festival dates to know

One perk of visiting places in Italy during the offseason is that you may stumble upon a unique (and thrilling!) festival. Our locals say that these are some of the top celebrations between October and February:

  • Locals tell us there’s another White Truffle festival in November, which takes place in San Miniato.
  • Eurochocolate in Perugia (October): This annual chocolate festival offers the opportunity to try chocolate from all over the world.
  • Wild Boar Festival in Suvereto (November): Never had wild boar? Now is your chance.
  • Battle of the Oranges (February): Prepare to get sticky—this festival involves a food fight and several hundred pounds of oranges.

Really, Italy is fantastic all year round

If you love pasta, art, world-class museums, stunning architecture, great red wine, and rich desserts—then locals tell us you'll love Italy all year round. Raining in Florence? Duck into the  Uffizi  museum. Chilly in Naples? Order some classic Neopolitan pizza, fresh from a wood fire oven.

Tour de France 2024, your ultimate stage-by-stage guide: From Florence to Nice, here's everything you need to know

Tour de France 2024, your ultimate stage-by-stage guide: From Florence to Nice, here's everything you need to know

First Published Jun 19, 2024

A first-time Grand Départ in Italy, and an unprecedented finish outside Paris as the race concludes in Nice on the Côte d’Azur – whatever else happens on this year’s 111th edition of the Tour de France, those two aspects alone will make it a unique and, let’s hope, memorable one.

Florence has the honour of hosting the start of the opening stage on Saturday 29 June, fittingly for this perhaps most multi-faceted of sports.

Florence (licensed CC BY 2.0 by Gary Campbell-Hall)

If you see cycling as poetry, you have the city of Petrarch and Dante; as art, Michelangelo and Leonardo; as engineering and science, Brunelleschi and Galileo; as politics, the Medici family and Machiavelli; and if it’s sporting heroes you prefer, you have the great Gino Bartali.

He’s one of a trio of Italian riders who each left their unique mark on the race and will be commemorated as the Tour makes its way across the roads they grew up and trained on, the others being Marco Pantani and Fausto Coppi.

But while history, whether of the sporting kind or in its wider, more general context, will never be far from the mind in the opening days of the Tour, besides the landscapes and the architecture, the other thing that draws us to follow the race is of course how the three weeks will play out on the road itself, before the Tour reaches its climax on Sunday 20 July with a 33.7km individual time trial from Monaco to Nice. It's the first time the Tour has ended with an ITT since Greg LeMond famously snatched victory from Laurent Fignon on the final day of the 1989 edition.

This preview focuses on the route rather than the riders, but as ever it is worth touching on a couple of the narratives that will be resolved during July. They’re often familiar ones, but with each year that passes, subtle shifts can occur.

Picture: Zac Williams/SWpix.com

Take the question of whether Tadej Pogačar can regain his crown from Jonas Vingegaard. It’s a question that was valid last year too, of course, the difference being that while 12 months ago it was the Slovenian who had to overcome an injury that disrupted his preparations, this time round it is the Dane, the defending champion, who must do so.

Both are now two-time winners of the race, but it is Pogačar who heads here fresh from a storming Giro d’Italia win that gives him the opportunity to become the first man since Pantani to win the Italian and French Grand Tours in the same year.

Tadej Pogačar wins the 2024 Giro d'Italia (Giro d'Italia)

But will his relentless pursuit of stage wins in Italy in a race he dominated from the start cost him in France, and if so will Vingegaard, still recovering from his crash in April, be fully fit to capitalise on it?

Among other contenders, the spotlight is on Primož Roglič, Vingegaard’s former team-mate and now leading Bora-Hansgrohe’s challenge. Being undisputed team leader takes some of the pressure and tension away, but while he comes here on the back of victory at the Dauphiné, it so very nearly slipped through his hands on the last day.

Roglič came so close of course to winning the 2020 Tour over his friend and compatriot, Pogačar, and with the Giro d’Italia also now in his palmarès can join the select group of riders to have won all three Grand Tours.

Among the first to do so was Eddy Merckx, which leads us onto one of the other big questions to be answered in this year’s Tour, again just as it was 12 months ago – can Mark Cavendish, who two years ago drew level with the Belgian great in number of Tour de France stages won on 34 apiece, forge ahead to claim the record outright?

Cavendish, who is now a Sir after he was knighted last week , crashed out of last year’s race the day after finishing second on Stage 7 in Bordeaux 12 months ago. He had also been pipped to the line in Paris on the final stage the previous year, days after drawing level with Merckx’s haul. He’s since been persuaded to defer his planned retirement and remain with Astana-Qazaqstan for one final season to try and clinch that elusive 35th stage.

Mark Cavendish at Tour de France 2023 (Alex Whitehead/SWpix.com)

Picture: Alex Whitehead/SWpix.com

Whether he does or not, he is still indisputably the most successful sprinter in the history of the Tour – but one final crossing of the line, arms aloft, would be a hell of a way to bid the race adieu.

That’s just a snapshot of a couple of things we will be looking out for in the next few weeks – and as always happens at cycling’s biggest stage race, there will be thrills and spills, smiles and tears, and in all likelihood things we can’t just predict, from cops tear-gassing the peloton to spectators causing crashes while greeting their grandparents on TV, and of course athletes at the top of the sport competing against some of the best scenery that Italy and France have to offer.

Here’s our stage-by-stage preview to the race, and don’t forget that if you fancy yourself as an armchair directeur sportive, you can play our Fantasy Tour de France game – head over here to learn more and sign up .

Stage 1 Saturday 29 June Florence – Rimini (139km, hilly)

TdF 2024 S01 Profile.jpeg

The 111th edition of Le Grand Boucle begins in Florence, Gino Bartali’s home city, with a tough stage to Rimini on the Adriatic coast that will is likely to see some hard racing from the start especially with Italian riders fighting to get in the break on home roads. Including seven categorised climbs, the 3,600 metres of climbing is unprecedented in the opening stage of the race.

The last of those takes the riders up to the hilltop republic of San Marino, the 13th country visited by the race, Covering 7.1km at an average gradient of 4.8 per cent it is crested 27km from the finish, followed by what could be a hectic descent towards the coast. As ever, the peloton will be nervous on the opening day, and any attacks from hopefuls for the overall title could blow the stage apart.

Stage 2 Sunday 30 June Cesenatico – Bologna (199km, hilly)

TdF 2024 S02 Profile.jpeg

This stage starts in the birthplace of Marco Pantani, the last man to complete the Giro-Tour double in the same season way back in 1998. Played out entirely in Emilia-Romagna, while there is less climbing today there are still five categorised ascents, the last of those, the climb to the Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Luca above Bologna familiar from finale of the Giro dell’Emilia, tackled twice.

Primož Roglič is a three-time winner of that race, while Aleksander Vlasov and Enric Mas have also triumphed there, but a three-week Grand Tour is a very different proposition to a late-season one-day race, and today’s stage finishes not at the top of the climb, but after a descent into the city centre. You’d expect a puncheur to win today, either solo or from a very select bunch sprint.

Stage 3 Monday 1 July Piacenza – Turin (230.5km, flat)

TdF 2024 S03 Profile.jpeg

All eyes today will be on Mark Cavendish as, in what will be his final participation in the race, he gets his first opportunity to clinch the outright record for stage wins at the Tour with victory number 35. The first of his 34 wins came 16 years ago, and to do so in Italy, his base for many years since his days at the British Cycling Olympic Academy in Quarrata, would bring his career full circle.

It’s a mainly flat stage which early on passes through Tortona, where two-time yellow jersey winner Fausto Coppi died, and with around 50km remaining after the final Category 4 climb, there’s plenty of time for the sprinters’ teams to hunt down the day’s break. Cavendish may not be consistently the fastest man in the peloton nowadays, but no-one reads a finish like him, and there would be no more popular winner.

Stage 4 Tuesday 2 July 2024 Pinerolo – Valloire (140km, mountain)

TdF 2024 S04 Profile.jpeg

An unusually early first visit to the mountains, and one that starts in a town that has hosted the race before, with Edvald Boasson Hagen taking a memorable solo win in 2011 on an Alpine stage that finished there, the peloton setting off the following morning towards the Galibier where Andy Schleck took yellow only to be overhauled by Cadel Evans in the penultimate day’s time trial.

After a pair of Category 2 climbs, the second of which sees the race cross the border into France at around the halfway point of the stage, the riders face the Hors-Catégorie Galibier, averaging 5.1 per cent over its 23km. There’s still a descent of around 20km to be tackled, but there are time bonuses available at the summit, as well as the Souvenir Henri Desgranges prize for the first rider over.

Stage 5 Wednesday 3 July 2024 Saint-Jean-De-Maurienne – Saint-Vulbas (177.5km, flat)

TdF 2024 S05 Profile.jpeg

The second sprinter-friendly stage of the race takes the riders north-west through the Alps along the valley of the river Arc towards Chambéry, and while there is some climbing, the second Category 4 ascent of the afternoon is crested with around 35km remaining, giving ample opportunity for anyone with an eye on the win who may have been distanced ample opportunity to get back into the group.

It’s the kind of transitional stage you might expect to see later in the race, though with a break composed of fewer riders that will be kept on a reasonably tight leash by teams looking to contest the expected bunch finish. The intermediate sprint, which comes with around a third of the stage remaining, should provide a strong pointer of who has ambitions to win the green points jersey.

Stage 6 Thursday 4 July Maçon – Dijon (163.5km, flat)

TdF 2024 S06 Profile.jpeg

As yesterday, the strong likelihood is that today will end with a bunch sprint, and the relatively short parcours will be welcomed by those still feeling the climb of the Galibier in their legs, or who are nursing injuries from crashes earlier in the race, as the peloton heads north through the vineyards of Burgundy.

The sole Category 4 climb of the day is crested after just 10km have been ridden, so it could be a fast start as riders jostle to get into the break, which is likely to be established once the riders are on the descent. It’s then pan-flat all the way to the finish, with a straight 800-metre run-in to the line, which will count against any remaining escapees looking to keep the chasing peloton at bay.

Stage 7 Friday 5 July Nuits-Saint-Georges – Gevrey-Chambertin (25.3km, individual time trial)

TdF 2024 S07 Profile.jpeg

The first of two individual time trials in this edition of the Tour is a short and predominantly flat one, which should limit any potential time gaps between those fighting for the overall victory. That said, there’s likely to be some shuffling of places towards the top of the general classification, and by the end of the day we’ll have a clearer picture of the chief contenders for the main prize this year.

As far as the day’s parcours which begins on forestry before heading through vineyards and forestry goes, the 1.6km climb of the Côte de Curtil-Vergy at an average gradient of 6.1 per cent is the sternest test, but you’d expect the stage win to go to an out-and-out specialist against the clock who will be targeting it specifically, rather than one of the overall contenders.

Stage 8 Saturday 6 July Semur-En-Auxois – Colombey-Les-Deux-Églises (183.5 km, flat)

TdF 2024 S08 Map.jpeg

France goes to the polls tomorrow for the second round of the snap parliamentary election called in June by President Emmanuel Macron; by coincidence, today’s stage finishes in a town forever associated with the towering figure of the country’s politics in the 20th Century, Charles de Gaulle, who made his home in Colombey-Les-Deux-Églises in the 1930s and is buried there.

The peloton faces five categorised climbs, the first three of which are short but punchy, and it could be a while until a break finally takes shape with the terrain likely to encourage counterattacks. Of the three ‘flat’ stages to date, this seems the one most suited to seeing the escapees prevail – although as the afternoon wears on, the sprinters’ teams will be riding hard to try and set up a bunch finish.

Stage 9 Sunday 7 July Troyes – Troyes (199km, hilly)

TdF 2024 S09 Profile.jpeg

Time trials aside, it’s highly unusual for a Tour stage to start and finish in the same place, but that is by no means the most remarkable thing about today – instead, it’s the Champagne region’s white gravel roads, similar to Tuscany’s fabled strade bianche and used in the 2022 Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift, that take centre stage with 14 sectors in all to be crossed.

That could prompt some interesting bike and tyre choices in the peloton, and the weather will also have an influence on how the day turns out – if it’s been dry in the days leading up to the stage, the Tour cavalcade will kick up clouds of dust, if it’s raining, it will be a mud-fest. With lumpy terrain including a quartet of four Category 4 climbs, it has all the makings of a mini-Classic.

Rest day Monday 8 July Orléans

Stage 10 Tuesday 9 July Orléans – Saint-Amand-Montrond (187.5km, flat)

TdF 2024 S10 Profile.jpeg

The race resumes in Orléans in the Loire Valley – as close as it will get to Paris this year, the day’s parcours taking the peloton south – with another stage that is all but guaranteed to end in a sprint in a town that as far as the Tour is concerned is best known for being where Carlos Sastre saw off the challenge of Cadel Evans in the final individual time trial to seal his overall victory in 2008.

There’s not a single categorised climb today and it’s similar to the type of stage regularly encountered in the opening week 15 or so years ago. But with the intermediate sprint coming fairly early, with 130km still to ride, if the contest for the green jersey is close there could be an incentive for teams with designs on it to neutralise breaks ahead of it to maximise their potential points haul.

Stage 11 Wednesday 10 July 2024 Évaux-Les-Bains – Le Lioran (211km, mountain)

TdF 2024 S11 Profile.jpeg

The race may be hitting its halfway point, but the Massif Central today sees just the second mountain stage. There are six categorised climbs in all, the highest ranked of which is the Category 1 Puy Mary Pas de Peyrol, covering 5.1km at an average of 8.1 per cent, its summit coming with 31km remaining ahead of what could be an explosive finish on a day with a total elevation gain of 4,350 metres.

The availability of bonus seconds on the penultimate climb, the Col du Pertus which is crested with just under 15km remaining could give an incentive to teams with overall contenders to sweep up any escapees early, and while the stage is not officially classed as a summit finish, the top of the final ascent, the Col de Font de Cère, comes with a little over 3km remaining.

Stage 12 Thursday 11 July Aurillac – Villeneuve-Sur-Lot (204km, flat)

TdF 2024 S12 Profile.jpeg

The start and finish towns today have both hosted the race before – Aurillac making its ninth appearance, Villeneuve-Sur-Lot its third, and on paper at least, the stage looks like one of those on in which the lead group will be swept up by the peloton ahead of the sprinters fighting it out for the win.

But undulating terrain throughout the stage, history suggests that it could be one for the escape artists, who have prevailed on both occasions on which a stage has finished in Villeneuve –two-time Italian national road champion Massimo Podenzano in 1996 and, four years later, the Dutch rider Erik Dekker. Will today be third time lucky here for the sprinters?

Stage 13 Friday 12 July 2024 Agen – Pau (165.5 km, flat)

TdF 2024 S13 Profile.jpeg

Since hosting the race for the first time in 1930, nowhere outside Paris has welcomed the Tour more often than Pau, today marking the 75th time a stage has started or finished in the city, its location making it a natural stop on the way into or out of the western Pyrenees. Its extensive history with the race also sees Pau bill itself as The Capital of the Tour .

If the race is heading out of the Pyrenees, the city typically hosts the finish of a mountain stage; heading towards them, it’s likely to be a flat one, as is the case today. As far as the parcours goes, there are a couple of Category 4 climbs late on, and as yesterday, it could be a close-run thing as to whether the break carries the day, or the stage ends with a bunch sprint.

Stage 14 Saturday 13 July 2024 Pau – Saint-Lary-Soulan Pla d'Adet (152km, mountain)

TdF 2024 S14 Profile.jpeg

It’s been a long wait, but finally the third weekend of the Tour sees the first of this year’s four summit finishes on a day that includes one of the most anticipated climbs of the race whenever it is included, the Col du Tourmalet, which is crested today with a little over 60km still to ride, and where the Souvenir Jacques Goddet prize is up for grabs for whoever rides over the top at the head of the race.

The climb of the Hourquette d’Ancizan precedes the final Hors Catégorie ascent to Pla d’Adet, averaging 7.9 per cent over its 10.6km, but heading into double-digit gradients in its first 4km. The big names in the overall will have been chomping at the bit for today’s stage as the battle for the yellow jersey begins in earnest – and today may show who has the legs for it, and who doesn’t.

Stage 15 Sunday 14 July 2024 Loudenvielle – Plateau de Beille (198km, mountain)

TdF 2024 S15 Profile.jpeg

Bastille Day falling on the penultimate Sunday of the Tour invariably means not only big crowds but also a big mountain stage to match, and this could be the pivotal one of this year’s race. There’s a whopping 4,850 metres of climbing on the menu for the Fête National starting the moment the flag drops and the race heads up the Col de Peyresourde.

It’s guaranteed that there will be an almighty fight to get into the break, including from teams or riders who have had a disappointing race to date, while the GC teams will also look to get riders up the road to be able to help their team leaders later on. With four Category 1 ascents ahead of that final Hors-Catégorie climb to the Plateau de Beille, fireworks are pretty much guaranteed.

Rest day Monday 15 July 2024   Gruissan

Stage 16 Tue 16 July 2024              Gruissan – Nîmes (189km, flat)

TdF 2024 S16 Profile.jpeg

There may be another five stages to come after today, but with the race skipping Paris this year, it’s the last chance saloon for the sprinters, the sole uphill challenge being a short Category 4 climb with more than 60km remaining. Meanwhile, the GC riders will be looking to stay out of trouble and conserve energy ahead of the battle for the overall title heading back into the mountains.

Should he have drawn a blank so far during the race, it’s also the final opportunity for Mark Cavendish to move ahead of Eddy Merckx in all-time stage victories – and today’s finish is in a city where the Manxman has triumphed before, outgunning Robbie McEwan, now a TV pundit on the race, to take his fourth career stage win at the race back in 2008.

Stage 17 Wednesday 17 July 2024              Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux > Superdévoluy (178 km, mountain)

TdF 2024 S17 Profile.jpeg

This is a stage that a punch into its final 30km or so, with three categorised climbs to be tackled including the Category 1 Col du Noyer, which has bonus seconds available at the top. It’s unlikely those will go to anyone challenging for the overall title, with this stage looking more like one that will be contested by a big breakaway group.

In part, that’s because other mountain stages this week appear to provide sterner tests and thereby the opportunity to put more time into rivals through well-planned attacks – but having said that, even if not racing for the win today, any sign of weakness from a rider towards the top of the overall standings could see the GC group explode as rivals try and capitalise.

Stage 18 Thursday 18 July Gap – Barcelonnette (180km, hilly)

TdF 2024 S18 Profile.jpeg

Five Category 3 climbs pepper the profile today and while, barring crashes or other unforeseen events it is highly unlikely to prove influential for the overall given the mountain and time trial stages in the days ahead, it could still provide an entertaining day’s racing given that the final three days feature two mountain stages followed by an individual time trial.

Why? Well, we’re a little over a couple of weeks away from the men’s road race at the Olympic Games which features a succession of short but leg-sapping climbs throughout, so for any puncheurs or Classics specialists left at the Tour who are also eyeing up a medal, today represents perhaps their last chance to test their form in an actual race ahead of Paris.

Stage 19 Friday 19 July Embrun – Isola 2000 (145km, mountain)

TdF 2024 S19 Profile.jpeg

The race heads towards its final weekend with the first of two summit finishes, this one including the Cime de la Bonnette – the highest paved road in France, and third highest in Europe, topping out at 2,802 metres, and one of three summits of over 2,000 metres that will be tackled today, the others being the Col de Vars and the climb to the finish at the Isola 2000 ski resort.

Whether by coincidence or design, the finish line is placed at 2,024 metres above sea level at the top of a 16.1km climb with an average gradient of 7.1 per cent. While training at altitude is the norm for big-name riders these days, the rarified atmosphere, not least on the 22.9km ascent of the Bonnette, which averages 6.9 per cent, could see some struggle through oxygen deficit.

Stage 20 Saturday 20 July 2024 Nice – Col de la Couillole (133km, mountain)

TdF 2024 S20 Profile.jpeg

Less than four-years after Nice hosted the Grand Départ of one of the strangest ever editions of the Tour in 2020, postponed until September of that year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Côte d’Azur metropolis again finds itself at the centre of the cycling world as the race finishes outside Paris for the first time as it prepares for the Olympic and Paralympic Games, now less than a week away.

The remaining riders head out of Nice today for the final mountain stage, returning tomorrow one by one at the end of the individual time trial that brings the curtain down on the race. The penultimate day brings four big climbs, the final one being the Col de la Couillole which averages 7.1 per cent over its 15.7km.

How today plays out depends on the overall standings, due to tomorrow’s live rather than neutralised concluding stage. If things are close at the top of the GC, we’ll see attacks as riders aim to give themselves the best possible opportunity against the clock – and their rivals – tomorrow; if time gaps are too wide, conversely, they may simply defend their positions, making it a day for the break.

Stage 21 Sunday 20 July Monaco-Nice (33.7km, individual time trial)

TdF 2024 S21 Profile.jpeg

In the 15 years we’ve been previewing the race, the final stage is the one that writes itself – the photocalls, the Champagne, the procession into Paris, the helter-skelter laps of the Champs-Élysées ahead of a frantic sprint finish and the podium celebrations in the heart of the French capital – but clearly that script has had to be ripped up this year.

It's 35 years since the race ended with an individual time trial, Greg LeMond snatching victory from Laurent Fignon in what remains the closest ever edition of the race. Starting in Monaco, the route includes two climbs, La Turbie and the Col d’Eze, before sweeping down into Nice and along the Promenade des Anglais then switching back towards the finish on Place Massena.

A spot on the final podium and even the overall title could still be in play. The penultimate day’s test against the clock in recent Grand Tours have seen Tadej Pogačar overhauling Primož Roglič to win the 2020 Tour, the latter coping with a late mechanical to take the maglia rosa from Geraint Thomas in last year’s Giro d’Italia. Organisers will be hoping for similar drama today as the 111th Tour concludes.

Not necessarily. I could see him (admittedly as a long outsider, but then there are only outsiders on a stage like this) infiltrating the break on stage 18 and then clinging on to the finish.

If I had to put money on him finding a win somewhere, though, doing something similar on stage 12 looks a better bet, or, more likely, sprinting from a small group after a wind-affected day.

Surely five Cat 3s with 3150m of climbing, including most of the last 20 km being a long drag uphill, would be too much for Cav? I think that one's got rouleur written all over it if there is a breakaway, a couple of good northern classics riders would draw his sting long before the finish. I would, of course, love to be wrong…

Yeah - like I said - very long shot, but he does have form for surprising people on parcours like that once or twice. In all likelihood though, it's too late in the race - there will be too many people seeing it as a last chance, a very large break, and so too many people who can ditch him before the finish. It's not  entirely  out of the question, though.

Well, I for one am getting a bit excited.

Seems to be starting a bit early, dont recall it starting in the month of June much.

Second week off, birthday week, nice!

ktache wrote: Seems to be starting a bit early, dont recall it starting in the month of June much. Second week off, birthday week, nice!

It has occasionally started in June but the tradition is usually to start the first Saturday after (or on) the first of July, this year they needed to start it early enough so the finish weekend won't overlap the opening of the Paris Olympiad, which it would have done if they'd gone for the more traditional 6th of July.

Have a cracking birthday week, excellent timing!

Awful if it corresponds with the rest day.

Excellent if it's a day in the mountains.

Why your best hiking or biking trip might be self-guided active travel.

You don't always need a guide to appreciate the beauty of the great outdoors and the thrill of ... [+] active travel in top spots such as Icleand.

Sometimes when we travel, having the best guide can make all the difference. Sometimes the best guide is you.

Self-guided active travel has been booming in popularity, and not just because it’s cheaper—and it is much more affordable, even at the luxury level. There are a number of other reasons besides price why if you enjoy hiking or biking trips, you might want to consider going self-guided.

But first a definition: Self-guided is not the same as DIY (Do It Yourself) and in this case does not mean just going it alone like a backpacking or bikepacking or camping trip. These are the same kinds of supported, itinerary-based active trips with hotels and great food that have boomed in popularity in recent years through companies like Backroads, Butterfield & Robinson, Vermont Bicycle Tours (VBT), DuVine, REI Adventures, Sojourn and many others. They include detailed daily directions, hotels, meals and special attractions along the way (winery visits, museums, etc.) and perhaps most importantly, baggage transfers from one hotel to the next so you don’t have to carry more than a day pack (if the itinerary involves moving, which most do).

With well marked trails connecting charming towns in one of the most beautiful landscapes on earth, ... [+] the Dolomites are a top spot for self-guided hiking and biking.

In short, these self-guided trips are just like fully guided trips except for three things: no guide, no other guests besides the ones you choose to travel with, and no obligation to choose pre-set departure dates to join a group. They are ideal for both couples and groups of friends or families who want to spend more time together. And did I mention they cost less?

Self-guided travel has been more popular in Europe for decades, and one of the biggest and best-established companies in the space is UK-based Macs Adventure , whose motto is “Active Travel Led By You.” Unlike other companies that offer self-guided as an option, it is all they do, for the past 20 years, with a broad array of walking and biking trips all around the globe, hundreds of them. Addressing the growing U.S. market, Macs opened an office in Denver that ramped up from 11 to more than 40 employees in less than 12 months, and last year, 2023 trips by Americans jumped 70% over the previous year. Last September was their busiest month ever in terms of travelers. Walking and hiking trips have always been more popular, but cycling grew 90% last year over the previous year and is closing the gap, and Macs now also offers e-bikes which are proving popular.

Tourissimo is an active travel expert in in all things Italy, and can set up a dream self-guided ... [+] trip through their favorite spots.

“Traditionally, adventure tour travel involved integrating with a group of strangers. As Americans seek to travel for personal discovery (which include celebrating major milestones, personal and spiritual growth), it’s much more meaningful and adaptable when you’re traveling on your own, and not with a group of strangers who are unlikely to share your priorities or values,” said Campbell Levy, spokesperson for Macs, in an email. “Personalized, authentic and immersive experiences are desired today, and self-led perfectly delivers this. And yes, price. Self-guided trips are definitely less expensive, making them more accessible to a broader range of travelers.”

Price is important in travel, but it’s hardly the only appeal of self-guided. I love cycling and you might love cycling, but we probably don’t share the same passions for culture, food, museums, or history. Self-guided allows travelers to be more independent with their time off the bike or hiking trail, to do more of what they enjoy and further customize the experience. Also, some people don’t want to travel with strangers, and self-guided is great for groups of friends or families.

Sometimes a day pack and good instructions are all you need for a memorable hikng trip

It also caters to people who are like minded about fitness, like a group of people who all hike roughly the same pace and mileage. Every guided active trip I have gone on has been very clear and honest about the physical expectations, but almost every time, paying guests ignore this. When I did the Tour du Mont Blanc, an iconic but strenuous long-distance hike through three countries in the Alps, there were people signed up who simply could not manage the physical effort required, forcing the guides to split up, disadvantaging everyone on the trip. Unlike a van supported bike ride, many hiking trips don’t cross roads often and offer no way to cut the trek short once you’ve started.

“Self-guided tours are cheaper than fully-supported tours, but price is not the main motivation for all guests, especially the ones who come to us,” said Heather Dowd, co-founder of Tourissimo , an active travel company based in Turin with a U.S. office, specializing in hiking and cycling trips in Italy, a favorite destination of American travelers. “They tend to be a bit more independent and want to have that time on their own during the day for discovery and adventure while still having the harder logistics (route planning and luggage, etc.) taken care of. They also like that there is someone they can call to assist them in the event of an emergency.”

Macs Adventure is the leading self-guided active travel specialist, and offers several itineraries ... [+] for the Tour du Mont Blanc, one of the world's most iconic hikes.

Macs Adventure has several different trip categories from more budget-oriented to In Comfort and In Style, the most upscale, but as a whole, their trips are quite affordable. For instance, the 8-day Best of the Bernese Oberland in Style through the Swiss Alps has one of their highest accommodations levels and at $3,585 per person is very reasonable in this sector, but quite pricey for the company, which has weeklong trips starting at under a thousand dollars. Cycle the Loire Valley in Style is a 6-day trip with their highest level of luxury accommodations, using 4-star Châteaux hotels, and runs just $2,965. Other categories include Discovery Trips that cover more ground using trains and/or ferries and Pilgrimage Trips for more spiritual journeys.

They also have a focus on “Classic Routes” around the world which are offered in sections or as a whole, with some much longer trips than most active travel companies offer, such as the entire Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route in Spain, 40-days, along with more than a dozen different sections or variations of the Camino in Spain and Portugal. One of the most popular categories is the Tour du Mont Blanc, often considered the best multi-day hike on earth—I’ve done it and it is absolutely fantastic, a Bucket List for avid hikers. The 12-day Complete Tour du Mont Blanc in Comfort, the highest level of accommodations they offer on this route (some sections have no luxury hotels no matter who you go with) is $3,960, while the Complete Tour du Mont Blanc in mountain huts is $3,145 for almost two weeks of travel.

Self-guided can still be luxurious: Butterfield & Robinson uses luxury hotels like the legendary ... [+] Palazzo Avino in Ravello on Italy's Amalfi Coast

Campbell mentioned celebrating major milestones, and that’s exactly what my wife and I did when we booked a self-guided cycling trip in Burgundy with Butterfield & Robinson for our 20 th wedding anniversary. B&R is known as the inventor of luxury guided active travel way back in 1966 and is atop the category in terms of white glove service, posh hotels, VIP experiences and amazing food. They are a fantastic company with a very high repeat rate and loyal customers, but all of that comes at a price, and in my case, the affordability of self-guided was important. B&R is the only company in the top luxury tier of active travel offering a self-guided option , and besides price it appealed to us for several reasons. Burgundy is a classic cycling dream destination, but our anniversary did not coincide well with the scheduled group dates. Also, while it is enjoyable to meet new people and I’ve had a lot of fun on active group trips, for this we wanted a more romantic experience. But we got the same great luxury lodging, food and special experiences along the way.

As an example, the B&R Self-Guided Burgundy trip includes an expert-led wine tasting at the luxury hotel the first night, a meet up with a local guide for a guided tour of medieval Beaune the second day, another private expert-led tasting in a wine cellar the third day, and a farewell dinner at a fancy hotel restaurant off the regular a la carte menu, all included. The only thing missing was someone actually riding with us, and other guests. The first day we were met at our hotel by a local B&R guide who delivered the bikes, did the fitting and gave us an orientation. Today, with GPS loaded routes in bike computers doing self-guided is easier than ever. They pick up and move your luggage every time you change hotels and have 24/7 emergency support available.

Many self-guided active trips are in wine regions like my anniversary ride in Burgundy, and there's ... [+] no skimping on wine tasting

Butterfield focuses their offerings on the places best suited to self-guided travel, with two dozen hiking and cycling trips in Slovenia, Switzerland, Tuscany, Vietnam, Provence, Spain, Croatia, the Dolomites and several others regions of Italy. Perhaps the most iconic trip in cycling is a week in Tuscany, and in this case, B&R’s self-guided version is a thousand dollars per person less ($5,695 vs. $6,695). It’s still pricy, it’s still luxury, but that’s two grand a couple you can use to splurge on anything from daily massages to jewelry while having the same quality active experience.

Among U.S. companies self-guided is still a bit of an obscure niche with some smaller players in it, mainly at the budget end. One exception is Vermont-based Country Walkers , another large well-known active travel company that offers a self-guided option to its “regular” guided trips. It’s all walking and generally a little less physically challenging, and as their website explains, “When you hit the trail on a Self-Guided adventure, you’re armed with route notes written by insiders who know the area. Without a large group of traveling companions, you’ll be able to blend in with locals, make new friends, and discover the highlights that guidebooks miss. Want to know the best local spot for dinner? Check your route notes…” They offer 10 self-guided trips in Scotland, Portugal, Maine, Switzerland, Canada, Ireland, Italy, France and England, with 6-7 day itineraries from $2,345 to $5,195 with most in the $3-4,000 range, and in general these are about $1,000 less than their similar guided trips.

A couple on their own trip with Macs Adventure, riding E-bikes through the olive groves of Tuscany.

Country Walkers’ sister company, Vermont-based VBT Biking Vacations , also offers elf-guided trips across Europe and the U.S., with E-bikes available. A 6-day Italy trip in the Dolomites is $3,795 while the guided option is $4,695.

“We've been getting more and more requests for self-guided tours. It’s not our main product, and a typical self-guided tour isn't really our style. So, what we offer is what we called “Co-pilot Tours,” said Tourissimo’s Dowd. “These are private, unsupported tours, but you're not completely on your own. You get the same attentive customer service before the trip, and at the start you are met by a Tourissimo guide who introduces you to the program and assists with bike fitting. You’re on your own for the rides, but we can arrange meals and activities. Some people have taken one of our fully-supported itineraries and asked for it to be run as self-guided. So, they get all of the services of the fully-supported tour, but without a 24/7 guide and support van. Our Co-pilot tours are cheaper than fully supported tours, but they are not as cheap as other self-guided programs.”

I’ve done both hiking and biking trips with Tourissimo , and highly recommend the company, whose focus is on showing their Italy to visitors, with a deep dive into local food wine, usually including cooking class, and curated family-owned small hotels (in castles and wineries and such) that would be very hard to find on your own.

“Why go self-guided on a Co-Pilot tour?” asked Dowd. “For the independence and adventure, with the harder details taken care of so you can focus on the riding and the fun.”

“Why not go self-guided? Many of our guests choose our full-service tours to enjoy being fully letting go while on vacation. They know the guides are looking out for them and they don't have to make any decisions. Several of the people on our last hiking tour mentioned that they loved the fact that for the week they didn't have to make any decisions. It's freeing and relaxing.”

Either way, active travel makes for a fantastic vacation.

How to Get Around Rome

Getting around the cobbled-stoned streets of Rome is not hard. I’ve walked, biked, and bused throughout Rome and loved it! All are great ways to get around and the method you choose depends on how much time you have and your personal preference.

I recommend the  Big Bus Tour  or a Golf Cart Tour in Rome if you are short on time or if you booked your travel in the dead heat of summer (which can be intensely hot).

With these tours, you’ll see all the top Rome attractions with audio commentary in your language of choice. If you choose an open top tour bus, the added benefit is free wi-fi and for 3 extra euros, you can use your ticket for two days (it is worth it).

When it comes to seeing Rome, walking can not be avoided especially when getting to an attraction that require climbing hilly pathways or navigating ancient streets. In my opinion, being on foot is one of the best ways to travel in Rome.

Exploring the narrow streets can lead you to the most marvelous pasta, the creamiest gelato, or the most perfect pasta! I highly recommend visiting the Trastevere neighborhood for  Italian street food .

Public Transportation

This is the best option for getting to a part of town that is more than 20 minutes on foot, especially if visiting a museum or park. Save your energy and use public transportation for less than 2 euros. You can purchase them at the tobacconist store.

You will need to validate your ticket upon boarding the bus (it’s an honor system). Getting caught with an un-validated ticket can result in a fine. You should also use a really good map of Rome.

Bike or Vespa

Peddling around the city on your own time feels so liberating. Bike rental is very affordable and is an enjoyable way to experience the outdoors, get some exercise to make up for all the  Italian breakfasts  that you eat, and explore Rome.

You can find rentals for as little as 13 euros for 24 hours, complete with lock, for a standard bike. The price for e-bikes is higher.

Getting around on a two-passenger scooter is loads of fun!  Rent a Vespa to skirt traffic or explore outside the city. They can be rented by the hour or day. This will make your trip to Rome memorable as you travel in true Italian style!

How to Get to Central Rome from FCO Airport

There are several options to get from Leonardo da Vinci International Airport to the center of the city. I found the train to be the quickest and most affordable especially if you’ve had a long day of travel and want to get to Termini station.

The most economical way to get from the airport to the city center is via a shuttle bus service from the airport. You can travel conveniently between Rome’s city center and the airport and take pleasure in a stress-free arrival or departure from the city.

The ride takes about 50 minutes and departures run from the airport every 30 to 40 minutes so you have time to collect your luggage. Shuttles stop in Terminal 3’s arrivals section. Look for the respective service at the arrival platform.

Terravision offers a shuttle service for less than 8 euros it’s quite popular. The buses are air-conditioned and there is no cost to bring your luggage aboard. It goes directly to Termini station with no extra stops.

Another option is the public transportation system, which costs about 6 euros. The bus stops multiple times in the city center, including one close to the Vatican and one at Termini Station, throughout the 45- to 1-hour one-way trip.

Buses halt in Terminal 3’s arrivals section, at number 14. You can purchase tickets at the airport desk or online.

A taxi is quite expensive. It will set you back almost 50 euros and the ride takes just as long as a shuttle service (about 50 minutes). You can find the taxis at the arrival level of Terminal 1 and Terminal 3.

The Leonardo Express train is less than 20 euros and runs every 15 minutes during peak periods. It is operated by Trenitalia and the ride takes about 30 to 40 minutes.

If you wait to collect your luggage, and then make your way to the window or kiosk to purchase your ticket, note that many others will be doing the same. Hate long lines? You can purchase tickets in advance and be ready for validation after boarding the train.

I can’t recommend a car rental unless you plan a day trip and need a set of wheels. Rome is completely walkable. Not to mention, even Italians know that finding a parking space can be a hassle.

Tips for Visiting Rome

I adore visiting Italy. And no trip would be complete without seeing some of the most iconic and historic spots in the Eternal City.

Don’t make the mistake (that I made on my first trip) and skip these incredible spots! Fortunately, I was able to see them on return visits!

Whether you are visiting the Vatican for the first time or returning because you tossed a coin into the Trevi fountain, these Rome travel tips will come in handy to make your stay enjoyable.

  • Be prepared! Read these tips on the essentials for an international flight .
  • Think comfort when flying coach , it will help you stay calm and confident.
  • Beware of scammers, pickpockets, and panhandlers. It’s a thing in Europe and it can happen when you least expect it.

The Best Souvenirs in France

There’s no shortage of unique souvenirs when visiting France . Not sure where to begin? Start with the iconic Eiffel Tower replicas, perfect for a touch of Parisian charm on your shelf. Savour the flavours of France long after your return with a selection of fine wines from a local vineyard or bring back authentic French macarons. For fashion enthusiasts, a silk scarf from Hermès or a chic accessory can add a dash of French style to any wardrobe. Art lovers will cherish prints or miniatures of masterpieces from the Louvre or Musée d'Orsay, while a handcrafted piece of Provencal pottery or a fragrant sachet of lavender from Provence can bring a touch of rustic French countryside into your home. Each of these souvenirs offer a tangible reminder of your time spent falling in love with France.

The Best Souvenirs in Greece

Take home the perfect souvenirs that capture the essence of Greece . First and foremost, don't miss out on bringing back some authentic Greek olive oil — a prized kitchen staple. Greek honey, particularly thyme or pine varieties, is another souvenir that offers a sweeter taste of the Mediterranean. Venture into local markets to shop the intricate handmade jewellery. These pieces are often crafted from silver and inspired by ancient Greek designs, a timeless piece of the country's history. For a splash of vibrant culture, colourful ceramics and pottery make perfect decorative and conversational pieces. Each of these souvenirs not only supports local artisans, but also ensures that a piece of Greece stays with you long after your journey ends.

The Best Souvenirs in Italy

When in Italy , the land of la dolce vita, finding the perfect souvenir is an important part of the experience. Italy's rich cultural heritage and traditions offer travellers many memorable (and shareable) reminders. Consider bringing home a bottle of extra-virgin olive oil, a selection of fine wines from Tuscany, or a locally made limoncello. Culinary delights like Parmigiano Reggiano cheese, balsamic vinegar from Modena, and authentic Italian pasta are delightful reminders of Italy's dining. Don't forget about the variety of hand-painted ceramic pieces from the Amalfi Coast to accent your favourite room at home. Which souvenir will be in your suitcase?

best souvenirs mediterranean portugal

The Best Souvenirs in Portugal

Stroll through the charming streets of Portugal and choose a painted ceramic tile that captures the soul of Portuguese artistry. These intricate tiles make for stunning coasters, wall art, or even decorative magnets for collectors. For a taste of tradition, pick up a bottle of port wine from the Douro Valley or a selection of creamy pastéis de nata , the delicate and delicious egg custard pastry tart beloved by locals, for reliving the flavours of Portugal at home. Check out the iconic cork products — Portugal is the world’s largest producer of cork, and you’ll find everything from handbags to eco-friendly coasters. Handcrafted embroidery from Madeira and delicate filigree jewellery also makes a heartfelt keepsake. Whether it's a painted ceramic tile or a sip of Porto’s finest, each souvenir tells a story of your time spent in Portugal.

As you pack your bags and prepare to leave the Mediterranean behind, remember that the souvenirs you’ve collected are more than objects — they’re tangible memories of your journey through this exciting region and reminders of the friends you made along the way.
