A Day in The Life:

Sunday Arrival: Upon arrival at camp in the afternoon, either from being picked up in Winnipeg or driving right to camp yourself, you will be greeted by Mike and his guides. That evening you get to share stories with the other hunters as the guides prepare dinner. After dinner hunting tags and fishing licenses are filled out so you are ready to go in the morning. Depending on your group you may share a room with a fellow guest.

Monday to Thursday and Saturday:  A hearty breakfast bulks you up for a morning of fishing the lake outside the cabin. The guides will take you out to their favorite spots where you can catch Walleye, Northern Pike, Yellow Perch, and much more. You return to camp around noon for lunch before you get ready to go to the stand. By mid to late afternoon your guide takes you to your stand. A radio is provided and check-in times are arranged with your guide. Your guide will come to your stand to pick you up after dark (to hide our movement). Upon harvesting a bear or wolf the guides will find and clean the bear/wolf for you. Once back at camp the bear/wolf is bagged and frozen. Dinner is often late but it is always hot and filling, however we also supply snacks for in the stand.

Friday:  You have a quick breakfast in the morning then jump into the truck for a 30 minute drive to Big Whiteshell Lake. Here we catch the boat to Crow Duck Lake Camp. Once across the lake you are picked up by safari trucks that portage everyone and the gear across to Crow Duck Lake. The owner Bill and his staff have the boats running and ready to go for the day. We keep enough Walleye for a fish fry over a fire at the edge of the lake. For everyone who has harvested by Friday they get to stay out on the lake catching Walleye and Small Mouth Bass all day. If anyone hasn't had the right Bear walk by yet they leave after lunch for their afternoon hunt.

Sunday Departure:  One last big breakfast to fill you up for your trip home. Bears/wolves are boxed for the flight or drive home. Check out is noon. If you fly a guide will drive you back to Winnipeg.

Where to hunt black bear.

The American black bear is widely distributed across the United States and Canada. Twenty-eight states and all Canadian provinces have hunting seasons for black bears, with Maine having perhaps the largest bear population of the Lower 48. Typically found in forested regions, this species is adaptable and often found near civilization. Which area for black bear hunting to choose depends on whether your preferred hunting method (baiting, over hounds, etc.) is legal, and whether you want a classic black skin or a different color phase skin, e.g. brown, chocolate, cinnamon, red, or blonde. Color-phase bears are especially common in the northwestern United States. A rare bluish-gray color phase in Alaska is known as the Glacier bear, and the all-white Kermode bear occurs on several islands in coastal British Columbia.

Price distribution

For the effort that is involved in preparation of a successful black bear hunt, including preparing bait sites, training hounds, etc., black bear hunts are relative bargains. They start at about $1,500 and seldom reach over $5,000. The most expensive propositions you see on BookYourHunt.com are usually fly-in or boat-based hunts in Alaska, which often come as package trips with a number of other species included in the price.

Baiting is by far the most popular way of hunting black bears. By studying tracks and marks, and checking trail camera images, the outfitter can have a pretty good idea what degree of success their hunters can expect. However, baiting is not as easy as it seems. Whether you’re planning a DIY hunt or hiring an outfitter, you’ll find our blog story on bear baiting useful.

When to hunt Black Bear?

The big question for a bear hunter is whether to choose to hunt in the spring or the fall season. The spring season typically starts after the bruins get out of their dens in April, and can continue through June. Most hunters prefer the spring season because it offers a chance to hunt when most other hunting seasons are closed. Success rates are also often higher during the spring. The early part of the spring season works better for hunting over bait, as the bears make up for the winter fast. Late May to June is better for spot-and-stalk hunting: shorter nights mean bears move in the daylight more, and big males are bolder and more active because it’s rut time and they’re looking for sows. The fall season usually starts in September and goes on until the bears den in November. The closer to denning time, the better the skin and the fatter the flesh.

Hunting methods All hunting methods (17)

Black bears are hunted by a wide variety of methods, depending on the terrain of the region and the regulations of the state or province. In some states and provinces, bears are hunted over bait with the hunter in a tree stand or blind. Some states allow bear hunting with dogs, and in other regions, drives are a traditional and successful method. In western regions, hunts are typically spot-and-stalk, and calling can also be effective.

Why hunt Black Bear?

American black bears are typically the smallest of all types of bears, but in areas where food is abundant, a bear may exceed 600 pounds. They are usually less aggressive than grizzlies, but still account for quite a few maulings and even deaths each year. A certain degree of hunting pressure is necessary not only to keep the bear population in check, but also to keep them associating humans with danger, which acts as conflict prevention. Black bear meat (when it’s not infected with trichinosis) is a delicacy, and its hide, especially in an unusual color phase, makes a beautiful rug. A black bear’s sense of smell is excellent. Although its eyesight and hearing are average. they are very intelligent. Harvesting a black bear is quite a challenge, which is perhaps one of the greatest attractions of the hunt.

Montana Black Bear Hunts

bear hunting guided trips

Montana black bear are fair game in both the fall and spring! Color phase bears in shades of cinnamon, chocolate, and blonde are seen more frequently than jet black bears. In fact, the Swan Valley is home to some of the best black bear hunting in Montana. Our bear hunts often utilize horses, which makes us a very unique option for guided bear hunts in Montana. Montana bear hunting in our area is pure fair chase, no baiting or use of dogs, in fact we can’t even use scents.

In the fall, we can hunt black bear in combination with other species hunts. In the spring, we’ll focus on bears exclusively.

The Swan Valley is one of the few areas in Montana that remains open for black bear hunting until June 15th. In the spring these animals are very active. They consolidate in numbers on the valley floor taking advantage of the new growth to bulk up after hibernation. Using a combination of horses and hiking, we’ll hunt rockslides, search old logging roads and mountain meadows for scat and sit clear cuts. Hunters can elect to take some time to fish, taking advantage of our “Cast & Blast” offering where you can have an opportunity to shoot a black bear, catch a lake trout and a northern pike all on the same adventure.

CAST AND BLAST

You can upgrade any 5 day Bear Hunt to this 6-Day fishing and hunting combination trip which allows sportsmen to fish with a spinning rod for trophy size Northern Pike and Lake Trout and hunt black bears on public land fair chase. The Spring in Montana is a great time frame to chase Northern Pike right before they spawn resulting in blistering runs while soaking in the solitude of the Swan Valley. We can even glass bears from the boat and switch gears to hunting if we find a big boar we like. We fish out of a pontoon boat or specialized trolling boat maximizing comfort and success. We allow you to mix and match your hunting and fishing days giving you a nice change of scenery and a break from the physicality of hunting.

If you are looking for the ultimate fair chase black bear hunt in the beauty of the Swan Valley, this hunt is for you!

Guided Alaska Grizzly Bear Hunts

Hunt grizzly bear in the arctic with experienced alaskan guides, grizzly bear hunts.

Every April, we return to the frozen salmon spawning grounds to hunt the arctic grizzly bear. Setting up small camps on the edge of our hunting area, we start looking for bears that have recently left hibernation. We make use of the continual arctic sunlight to hunt nocturnal bears. The large boars in this area spend this time feeding on last fall’s salmon deposits. This is a hunt conducted ambush style, where patience is key to our high Grizzly Bear hunt success rate. Due to the rich nutritional value of the bears’ feed, they grow larger than most northern grizzlies, 7-8 foot being our common take. Wolves are commonly seen feeding on salmon during these hunts,  and wolves can be taken as a secondary animal.

After break up in mid-May, we provide hunts for arctic grizzly on the south slopes of the Brooks Range. Shortly after leaving hibernation, grizzly bears move onto the hillsides to feed on the new spring growth. We use this to our advantage, spotting bears from great distances and making foot stalks. Because of the poorer food quality and longer winters, the arctic grizzly is smaller than the bears we hunt in our southern grounds. However, due to living in this northern environment these bears do grow an incredibly thick coat, and tend to be much lighter in color.

The Alaska Grizzly, Ursus arctos , is the largest predator of our hunting area. Arctic Grizzly Bears are one of the main killers of caribou and moose calves in the spring. Coming out of hibernation in late April to early May, the bears start looking for the closest food source to make up for lost weight from the winter’s slumber. Salmon left over from the fall run or the early growth on south sloping hills are easy pickings for spring bears. In our hunting concession, spring grizzly bear hunting is extremely effective because we can focus our efforts on areas with high food concentrations.

Accommodations

Although there are many factors outside of our control during an Alaskan hunt, there are measures we take to insure a comfortable stay no matter what Mother Nature decides to throw at us. Camps are strategically placed to insure solid hunting locations within a close walking distance. As most of our falls hunting camps are accessed via float plane, we are typically set up on or near a lake shore. Guests are housed in canvas Sibly tents, heated with a wood stove and furnished with cots. A cook/mess tent is also set up to allow comfortable dining during adverse weather conditions. We take great efforts to prepare home cooked breakfasts and dinners that will satisfy any hungry hunter. While out hunting, lighter pack lunches are packed. All camps are supplied with at least one satellite communication device and appropriate survival gear.

Travel and Logistics

All of our guided trips originate in Fairbanks Alaska. We suggest booking a flight with an arrival date at least one day before the start date of your trip. There are several options of hotels near the airport that provide shuttle services. On day one of your trip we will pick you up at your hotel. If you have not already purchased your hunting license and tags, we will stop by Fish and Game before leaving town. From Fairbanks, we drive four hours north to Circle City. In this small rural community, your pilot will meet you with the float plane on the Yukon River. Most of our camps are accessed via float equipped Cessna 180. As we have to follow the strict laws of gravity, we ask that you keep your gear under 60lbs. Most flights to camp are an hour to an hour and a half. Due to the unpredictability of Alaska’s weather it is best to leave some flexibility in your travel plans. At times, delays of several days may occur due to severe weather keeping our airplanes grounded.

bear hunting guided trips

All of our guides are highly experienced and professional. Owner, Charlie Jagow, was raised hunting and trapping in the region, this experience has given him, not only knowledge of the area, but also a personal connection to the refuge and its wild places. Many of our hunting guides also live in the bush and have a life time’s experience worth of hunting in the Arctic. Hunting is a way of life for us. There are no schools or college courses available to train a guide; instead, this highly skilled profession is only learned from hands-on experience and apprenticeship. All of our guides have dedicated themselves to perfecting these skills. Guiding is not a job for us, it’s a passion. We love assisting our guest in the pursuit of a life time!

There are opportunities to fish in most of our hunting camps. Some of the smaller rivers provide some of the best grayling fishing the state has to offer. Many of our lake camps are inhabited by both pike and graying. Light tackle, spinners and spoons are our choice for catching both species.

Beautiful Bear in Maine’s West Branch Region

Black bear hunting is our livelihood – not just a seasonal sideline. It is our full time commitment to make your Foggy Mountain black bear hunt a complete and memorable experience.

The Most Productive Black Bear Hunting Outfitter in Maine, the United States or Canada.

You want a guide who produces consistent black bear kills even in years when natural adversities exist – years when inexperienced guides and hunters fail to produce.

Maine’s Foggy Mountain Guide Service was founded by Wayne Bosowicz – regarded as the dean of black bear hunting guides.

Foggy Mountain’s close knit staff of fully licensed Maine guides set the world standard that others can only dream of achieving. And no expense is spared to continually raise that standard.

You have provided my son and I with a fabulous time for three years in a row. The hunting and site locations are outstanding. You and your guides could not be more knowledgeable or helpful. All of your support people are very hospitable and friendly. The conversations during meals (which are terrific) and non hunting time were great fun and very enjoyable. Brandon, you are a true sportsman and professional. We would certainly recommend you to other hunters. Leon Tragger Sr & Jr, Pennsylvania, September 2017

Wayne has spent decades developing the bear habitat and prime hunting stands in the best bear hunting territory of Maine. He has passed his knowledge and skills to a privileged handful of Maine Guides like Brandon Bishop whose sole job is to see to it that you have the best possible opportunity to fulfill your hunting goals.

As a result, record-book black bear are consistently taken in Maine year after year. Our trophy room shows the results.

Trophy black bear at Foggy Mountain

Bear hunting is our life, so no matter how you cut it, a part time guide can not give a full time commitment.

I want to thank you and your group. We could not have asked for a better time. Everyone in our group saw bears, and the area to hunt is some of the best I’ve ever seen. Larry Salerno, Seneca Falls, New York, September 2016.

You kill’em, You Grill’em – We take care of the rest

Foggy Mountain will track and retrieve your game, field dress and skin it. We prepare the meat and hide for your trip home.

Our freezers will preserve the fresh quality of your meat and hide. We prepare your trophy for your taxidermist, or we can introduce you to one of our highly skilled local specialists. Meat cutting and packaging is also available locally.

Private & Flexible Accommodations

Unlike hunts with most outfitters, lodges and sporting camps, Foggy Mountain’s guests are not doubled up in a bunk house or room with other guests. Your party will enjoy the privacy of your own sleeping room, and the good night’s sleep that is important for a good hunt.

You have a choice of lodging options – whether you come alone, with a large group, with your spouse or whole family. Both American or Housekeeping Plans are available.

Thank you for the awesome hunt. I am extremely happy with my first bear. I can’t wait to come back and do it again. The cabin that you put my wife and I in was very nice. As you know, my wife is particular on where she stays and it was above even her standards. This has been one of the best hunting trips I have ever been on, not only killing the bear but catching smallmouth in the river and seeing all the additional wildlife was amazing. I can’t thank you enough. Aaron Lehnen, Middletown, Missouri, September 2012.

My wife and I had a remarkable time while hunting with you. The whole experience for both of us will be remembered forever. Even though she didn’t hunt she told me several times that she didn’t want to go home. The lakeside time was very relaxing for her. When I did kill a bear we both were delighted beyond words. Like I told you when I left, ‘I will be back’. Michel “Scott” Stirn, Brookville, IN, September 2017
Thanks for the great time. I will never forget all the fantastic things we experienced in such a short time. Getting that bear was icing on the cake. Joe Bowman, Hamilton, Indiana, September 2016.
Thanks for a great visit and a great hunt the first week of the season. Brandon did an excellent job! He was easy to hunt with and was more than willing to share his knowledge of bear hunting and the area we were hunting. The hospitality and accommodations were fantastic. Frank L. Just a word about the great hunt that was afforded me there in Maine. I have been to Montana twice, one producing a 5x5 bull, and two hunts for black bear. The hunt in September at Foggy Mountain was the best of all hunts I have been on. Your professionalism and caring about all aspects of the hunt, quarters, food and making sure that our wants and needs were taken care of. You are the very best and finest bear outfitter in all the northeast. Thanks. Ron Marlett, Auburn, New York, September 2011.

Spring Brown Bear Hunts

Alaska Brown Bear Hunting

In the spring, primarily in the month of May, the brown bears begin to emerge from their dens. When they do, the first thing they want after 9 months of sleeping is to eat. Southeast Alaska is covered by dense rainforest and in the spring the first thing to turn green is the beach grass located along the coastline. As the bears come out of their dens they head straight to the beach to consume the fresh buds.

This allows us to know exactly where the bears are headed when they come out of hibernation. We will anchor the yacht in an area where we know bears frequent, and where there is plenty of grassy shorelines. Once anchored we will use smaller skiffs, typically 16-18 foot aluminum runabouts, to cruise the miles of endless shoreline. Once we spot a respectable bear we will put the boat ashore and make a stalk. If the bear is a trophy, we will then do what we can to harvest the bear while on shore.

This method of hunting is highly successful, and typically allows us to see many bears on a 10-day hunt. We usually run at about an 80% success rate for shot opportunity on our spring hunts, with it not uncommon for every hunter to go home with a bear.

Fall Brown Bear Hunts

Alaska Brown Bear Hunting

Mid-summer the salmon start to run into the streams. Southeast Alaska has literally thousands of salmon streams and millions of salmon return to spawn each year. When these fish enter the streams it is like a buffet line for the bears. Brown bears will use these streams from August until late September, feasting on the high protein salmon in preparation for denning up for the winter.

This again allows us to know where the bears are, concentrated over a dominant food source. In the fall, we will anchor the yacht somewhere near a multitude of productive salmon streams. We will then use the small boats to access the shore, and will hike up the streams in search of large trophy bears. Typically we will trip over many small bears and sows on the way to the best fishing holes, which the largest bears lay claim to. It is a very interactive hunt, and not one for the faint of heart. Close encounters with bears of all size are not uncommon. A typical shot opportunity on a fall hunt is at about 40 yards!

Either style hunt can be very productive and successful. Spring hunts are usually less physical and can be enjoyed by hunters of almost any ability, while hunting in the fall you will need to be ready to spend long days in hip waders on slippery rocks and fording streams. Fall is much more physically demanding, but can be highly rewarding and a full adventure!

Alaska Brown Bear Hunting

Keegan, I wanted to thank you for the absolutely fantastic hunting experience you and your guys provided for us on this trip.

I have five beautiful mounts to get done and that is what I hoped for but not sure what the reality would be.

The food was great, you guys were great to hunt with and really went out of the way to help us.

Couldn’t have asked for better weather, I know you can’t fix that but it worked out beautifully.

I will absolutely push your hunting experience for future hunts with my friends.

Again, thank you for a great trip of a lifetime.

Wild Idaho Outfitters, Inc.

Why Hunt Idaho?

Top 3 reasons:, • guaranteed tags, • quality game, • opportunity.

bear hunting guided trips

Welcome to Wild Idaho Outfitters

We are located in central Idaho, operating from Challis. Conducting spring bear hunting , summer pack trips and fall elk , mule deer and black bear hunts in over 150 square miles of the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness. The terrain in the “Frank” is Very rugged and not for the faint of heart; all operations are conducted from wall tents. There is great cutthroat trout fishing, hunting bull elk in the rut with rifles, liberal mule deer season , good black bear and mountain lion, plus bighorn sheep and mountain goat.

Now accepting reservations for the 2024  & 2025  Idaho Elk, Mule Deer, Black Bear & Wolf hunting seasons.

Let's get your Idaho hunting adventure started. Give us a call and make your reservation!

Idaho Elk Hunts

Idaho is one of the few western states left that allow rifle elk hunting during the rut and over the counter tags and although there is a quota on Idaho nonresident elk tags, as licensed outfitters in a quota area we have guaranteed tags for hunters who book an Idaho elk hunt with us. We offer fully guided elk hunts as well as drop camps for the "Do It Yourself" hunter otherwise known as the DIY hunter. Because of the ruggedness of our elk country , public hunting competition is very rare indeed. Our Idaho elk hunting area has experienced fires in the recent and distant past that makes for some pretty amazing elk habitat and hunting generally consists of getting to a vantage point and glassing or bugling up a rutting bull elk during our early season Idaho elk hunts.

Idaho Mule Deer Hunts

Area 27 mule deer hunting is quite possibly some of the best backcountry over the counter mule deer hunting left out west. With the vastness and tough access of the rugged Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness area, it allows for a lengthy mule deer hunting season that runs from mid-September to the end of October and actually can run into mid-November with a draw tag that is guaranteed if you apply during the application period that generally takes place in May. With dates that coincide with the general elk hunting season , it is possible to hunt both elk and deer in a combo hunt that really gets you more bang for your hunting dollar. The rugged country of the “Frank” keeps public hunter competition to a minimum.

Idaho Spring and Fall Black Bear Hunts

Because of the access or shall we say inaccessibility of Idaho’s backcountry units, Idaho allows for a many different means of take including hunting with dogs and baiting. Idaho also allows for a limit of 2 bears in these backcountry areas. Baiting for bears is a very effective way for a selective harvest both on color and gender. With bears visiting the baits it allows the hunter time to assess the size and color phase of the bears and to avoid the bears with cubs. Idaho has a high percentage of color phase bears and the possibility of seeing a very nice cinnamon, chocolate or blonde color phase black bear is very real.

Idaho Elk, Mule Deer, Black Bear and  Wolf Combo Hunts

Idaho is the last state that we are aware of where you can still pursue multiple game species during the same time frame. In the backcountry zones like our Middlefork zone all the seasons overlap and allow for elk , deer , bear , wolf and mountain lion hunting all at the same time. Throw in a little grouse hunting and maybe some backcountry fishing and you can see how Idaho can be an outdoorsman’s paradise! Join us for a combo hunt and enjoy all that Idaho has to offer. It's quite possible you will also be able to experience all of Idaho's seasons, spring, summer, fall and winter, all within the span of a one week hunt.

Idaho Wolf Hunts

We are offering wolf hunts in Idaho’s Middlefork zone which currently has no quota. We are combining wolf hunts with the opportunity to possibly even harvest a mountain lion along with the possibility of a coyote; making for what might be considered the ultimate predator hunt. Remember these are mid-winter backcountry hunts and are very physically demanding.  During the fall you can add that to your combo hunt and make that 4 species you are after during the same time frame and really stretching that hunting dollar.

Idaho Youth Combo Hunts

The State of Idaho encourages youth hunting for both residents and non-residents. The Idaho Fish and Game has a junior mentor program with greatly reduced license and tag fees. We at Wild Idaho Outfitters also encourage families with young hunters and offer reduced pricing on our hunts for juniors’ ages 10 to 17 when accompanied by a paying adult. This is a great opportunity to encourage young hunters and get them started with a good hunting experience. So, what are you waiting for? Join us with your youth hunter(s) and make some lasting memories.

The Great Alaskan Grizzly Hunt

Are you ready for the adventure of a true Alaskan Grizzly Hunt? The Grizzly is the largest of all bears is in the beautiful wild Alaskan land. A Native Alaskan Tom Gray has lived here all his life; living off of the land and sea. You won’t meet a more pleasant and knowledgeable guide to find that trophy bear to bring home. Whether you hunt by bow or rifle, the hunt is tailored to you. You will track your bear so you will know when the best time to shoot.

Grizzly bear Hunt

Our Bears are Barren Ground Grizzlies. Most of our bears are 7 to 7 1/2 foot bears

(However, we have killed 8-9 foot bears!)

Hunting Camp

Alaskan NW Adventures camp is ideally located off of the Niukluk River between the village of Council and White Mountain.

We run jet boats that will pass through water only inches deep. Running the river can be an adventure in itself with us as some places are very shallow. The rivers are clear and you can see all the fish as we run with the boat. Being raised on our rivers Tom knows where the best places to hunt and fish.

Bear Hunting

Guided bear hunting in Idaho

Bear hunting has been practiced for centuries in North America.  Hunting the Black Bear gives just enough thrills without the dangers of hunting a Grizzly.  Plus the meat is said to be far more delectable than that of the Grizzly.  At Silver Spur Lodge in Idaho, bear hunting is done in both the fall and in the spring.  Hunts in the spring months, April through June are based from an accommodating and impressive lodge.  Hunts in the autumn are from the lodge and camps. These are offered as guide and drop camps.

Throughout North America, the Black Bear is no stranger, especially to hunters.  Some may hunt for the excitement and sense of adventure that comes with bear hunting.  Others take on bear hunting the Black Bear for the meat that has been compared to that of pork.  And there’s always the pride of a hunter, having something to show for the hard work put into the hunt when he takes home a bear skin to boast about for years to come.  In addition to its preferred meat as a bear, the Black Bear is said to be less unpredictable than the Grizzly, particularly when it comes to being awakened from hibernation.

Idaho bear hunting trips by Silver Spur Outfitters & Lodge

As observed by Theodore Roosevelt, bear hunts are definitely an exciting type of hunting, providing you with just enough challenge, thrill, and danger to be attractive. The Black Bear is abundant throughout North America, making it readily available to hunt without being a threat to its species. This is especially true in the northern regions of the United States. Idaho is one such region. During the autumn months of September through October, and again in the spring months of April through June, Idaho offers a phenomenal variety of Black Bear hunting opportunities with lots of color phase bears. Whether you’re looking for a more relaxed hunting trip, or maybe you want more of a challenge accompanied by a real outdoor experience, bear hunts are a prime opportunity to experience the fun and excitement of hunting.

Have you always wanted to hunt a bear? Or perhaps you’ve already done so, and can’t get enough. Either way, depending on the season and the approach you choose, there are a number of ways to experience bear hunts . During the autumn months, you may find yourself with the chance to get a bear during a guided combination hunt for elk, deer, and bear. This is a guided outdoor experience in a deluxe camp with all you’ll need to be comfortable. Come spring and there’s bear hunts over bait, or spot and stalk bear hunts. These are based from an accommodating lodge.

Bear hunts over bait tend to be a more relaxed experience in nature. These are an excellent hunting option for couples or even parents with their children. The spot and stalk bear hunts are a bit more of a physical challenge with the demands of the steep surrounding country. These bear hunts consist of stalking from a jet boat, and going in for a shot. Bear hunts come with a two bear limit in 2012, with future limits yet to be determined.

Beyond Bear Hunting

While bear hunting is a timeless sport and means of survival embraced by both early settlers and Native Americans alike, there is a number of other game to hunt in the backcountry of Idaho.  The autumn bear hunting trip is a combination of guided elk, deer, and bear hunting which is based out of a deluxe camp that requires a horseback ride into the base.  For the more experienced hunter, there is the unguided elk hunt out of the same deluxe camps, providing access to units 19 and 20 of the Selway Zone and 20A of the Middle Fork Zone.  These zones are any weapon for bear hunting, as noted by Idaho Fish and Game.

Mountain lion hunts, much like the bear hunts, are based out of the lodge and run through the winter months.  In addition to these hunts are bighorn sheep, moose, and deer hunting.  For those bear hunting in Idaho in 2017, there is a two bear limit.

See what hunters have to say about us

Let me start off by saying: my wife and friends booked a hunt for a surprise birthday for me and a handful of my friends. I found out about the hunt in June and we went out end of October first of November. As a testament to Amon and his crew (mainly family and friends)…

It was a little warm when our hunt started, so not much animal activity but a few days into our hunt the weather changed snow came in and animals started moving out of two of us we shot a 5×5 on day 5 and a 5×5 on day 7 our guide Brandon never gave up…

Had the most amazing and unforgettable trip to elk hunt with this group. Amon and his crew are great. You will not find another group of guides that will work as hard as him and his guides work to get you on animals. We had his son guiding us and he worked great with us.…

JR Rosengrant

We booked the second week of October horse camp. 5 of us hunted, 4 of us shot bulls. Laramie, Rodger, and Luke had us on bulls every day. You definitely need to be in decent shape, and no round isn’t it! It was demanding, but so worth it, between the incredible views, the unbelievable elk…

Got my biggest black bear 🐻 to date Thursday with Shattuck Creek Outfitters. Mr Amon Molsee the owner himself took me out and put me right on ‘‘em early that morning. Great food, clean cabins with extremely comfortable beds just Awesome accommodations. Shattuck Creek Outfitters has a huge variety of game to hunt from Shiras…

My dad and I were lucky enough to book a last minute hunt with Shattuck Creek Outfitters. We’ve used outfitters before in the past, but Amon and his crew are by far my favorite. Luke was our guide. My dad has a bad knee right now and Luke knew exactly how hard to push and…

Group of 5 got there the first week of the season and we all filled tags. I was able to fill my second tag on our last night. Accommodations were excellent, food was great, and the staff went the extra mile. Have recommended this group to several people already.

Matt Zarling

I just completed a 5 day spring bear hunt with Amon and his amazing crew of guides. Every one of his guides was focused on getting all the hunters in stands that would offer us the best possibility of harvesting an animal. I personally did not run with the dog hunts but his dogs have…

My dad and I were fortunate enough to get to spend a week with this fantastic family. Coming into a Mountain Lion hunt I came in wanting to learn as much as possible about the guides and the Mountain Lion species. The guides treated us like family and were great to hang out with during…

Dennis LaBombard

I really like hunting with Shattuck Creek Outfitters. Amon (and Luke) really do their best to try and get you an animal. And they aren’t afraid to hunt in the rain. The accommodations and food are great. Mostly we hunted clear cuts in the woods. I got a mule deer of a lifetime in 2016;…

"I have told several of my friends, my brothers, and anyone about what a great hunt they would have if they spent time at Jamie's camp. He is a hunter and gets it, but is so real and down to earth with no bravado, making him not just a guide but a friend. Can't wait to go back."

Guaranteed Elk and Deer Tags

Mile High Outfitters offers horseback, tent camp, wilderness hunting and fishing trips in the Frank Church Wilderness in Central Idaho. No one can guarantee a trophy bull or state record fish; but here’s what we can promise. We will provide sound, quality horses and mules, your professional guides will work hard, you will get to visit God’s greatest creation in the largest wilderness in the lower 48 and, even though you will eat like a horse, you will lose weight because we will work your ass off. Elk, deer, lion, bear and wolf tags are guaranteed.

Mile High has two major areas of operation. The original area is in the center of the Frank Church Wilderness and the front range area is on the edge of the wilderness. Both areas are rugged and beautiful, and they kill people every year who are not prepared or take them for granted. Both areas use horses and mules and offer tent camp accommodations. There are two major differences between the two areas. The wilderness has a long rifle season stretching from Sept. 15- Nov. 18 for elk, deer, bear lion and wolf. The front range, because it is more accessible, has a shorter rifle season but also has an archery season for elk and deer. The other major difference, because the wilderness is so vast and it takes us 2 days to ride stock in, we fly our customers into the wilderness via one of the air strips. Even though the front range is more accessible, it has very limited tags. Physical fitness is a must if you accompany us on one of our wilderness or front range hunts. Elk and Mule Dear hunts can be booked as a 1×1, 2×1 or we can do drop camps in the front range. Lion hunts are only booked as a 1×1. Bear and wolf hunts can be booked as a 1×1 or 2×1. fishing trips can be booked as guided or drop camp for both lake and stream fishing.

Travis, Brenda, Charlie and Clay Bullock, owners of Mile High Outfitters, live in Challis, Idaho and are the backbone of this elk, mule deer, black bear and mountain lion outfitting and guide business. They offer both fly in and pack in hunting and fishing trips into the Frank Church Wilderness and the Salmon River Mountains. Travis started working for Con Hourihan at Taylor Ranch Outfitters and Scott Farr at Wilderness Outfitters in 1984 when he was 15 years old. He and Brenda bought Mile High Outfitters in 1995. Since then, they have added three other businesses to their operation including the old Big Creek Lodge area, the Lucky Boy Outfitters area which was the original White Cloud Outfitters area and a portion of the Gary Madsen, 4×4 Outfitters area. Combined, Mile High has approximately six hundred and fifty square miles of hunting and fishing area in the Frank Church Wilderness and the Salmon River Mountains. The wilderness fish and game units are 26, 27 and 20-A which is considered the Middle Fork elk zone. The front range area is located between Stanley and Challis between the Salmon River Mountains, the Sawtooth Mountains and the Boulder/White Cloud mountains. Our front range hunts are in fish and game units 36 and 36-B which are part of the Sawtooth and Salmon elk Zones. There are over 150 miles of streams and 20 high mountain lakes to fish in Mile High Outfitters’ exclusive guiding and outfitting area.

Travis and Brenda’s two boys, Charlie and Clay Bullock are the 4th generation of Bullocks to hunt and fish the same area. Their great grandfather, Claude Bullock took their grandfather Craig elk hunting on Big Creek in 1957; back when it was known as the Idaho Primitive area. Each year Travis, Charlie, Clay and the guides break one or two horses and mules to add to the forty head of stock in their pack string. Brenda takes care of the office and keeps her boys in line. This family does everything it can to make your wilderness hunting and fishing trip enjoyable and safe. They maintain their string of horses, mules, riding saddles, pack equipment, tents, trucks, trailers, snowmobiles and ATVs constantly. Mile High guides are experienced in horsemanship and eager to help. They have eyes like an eagle, are in good shape and are experienced at spotting and stalking game. They understand that most hunters will not be able to keep up and they are professional enough to let you go at your own pace but please – no whining.

Mile High, through the Idaho Department of Fish and Game and the Idaho Outfitters and Guides Licensing Board, has an allocation of guaranteed non-resident elk and deer tags. These non-resident tags were greatly limited by unit in 2020. Mile High is insured, bonded, a member of the Idaho Outfitters and Guides Association, permitted on the Challis BLM, Salmon/Challis Forest and Krassel Ranger district on the Payette Forest and is licensed by the Idaho Outfitters and Guides Licensing Board – license number 7940.

If you book a trip with Mile High Outfitters, you will be required to fill out a contract. This contract protects both you and Mile High. It gives the specific trip dates, where to show up and exact costs. Our insurance company also requires an acknowledgement of risk form be filled out by each guest. Mile High will send a recommended gear list for your trip and there are two videos on this site that cover some of the items you may or may not need during your hunting or fishing trip. Mile High Outfitters has an allocation of guaranteed elk and deer tags for our clients but they are limited so we encourage hunters to book early.

Age and Weight limits – Due to misuse of our stock by overweight clients, we have a weight limit on each client of 250 pounds. If you look heavier than what your contract says, we will weigh you with your clothes on. If you are heavier than 250 pounds, you will not be allowed to ride our stock. We apologize if you do not fit this category, but we work hard to provide the best riding stock possible. We care deeply for our horses and mules, and we can’t risk clients hurting them. I won’t sugar coat it, if you’re so fat your belly hits the saddle horn and your ass hangs over the cantle, don’t call us! There is no age limit. If you feel young enough at heart to join us on an adventure, we will do our best to accommodate you. Age catches all of us and unlike obesity, it is not a choice. The oldest hunter we have ever taken was 94. He was 5’ 10” and 150 pounds. He lion hunted with me 4 times and killed 3 cats. If he wanted to hunt again, I would sign him up tomorrow.

Unsafe gun handling – As guides, we expect each client to handle their weapon so as not to endanger the guides and other hunters. The first time you point your rifle at someone, we will ask you to point it in a safe direction. The second time you do it, we will haul you back to the trailhead and send you home. There is no room for stupidity when it comes to firearms.

Hunting and fishing trips can be booked as a guided trip or drop camp. Most hunters book as a 1×1 (one guide per hunter) or 2×1 (two hunters per guide). Guided hunts are much more successful than drop camps because we use horses and mules each day to hunt and therefore, we cover much more country. Hunters are also accompanied by guides who know the area and are familiar with the habits of the game. Drop camp fishing trips are very popular and work well for enthusiastic fishermen in both the high mountain lakes and wilderness stream fishing. We offer a few drop camp hunting trips outside the wilderness and it is an economical way to access hard to reach areas but we have very few openings and they usually sell out fast. We do not put drop campers on top of guided hunters or vice versa.

We highly recommend trip cancelation insurance. Due to the ever-changing wilderness environment, forest fires, smoke, mud slides, foul weather, and other acts of God, we are sometimes kept from providing all or part of your trip.   Each year hunters cancel out due to work, health issues, etc. and either want their money back or roll their hunt over for the following year. Because we do not overbook, we expect each client to follow the contract. If you do cancel out, there are three options. First, use your trip cancelation insurance. If you did not buy insurance, find someone to fill your spot. Lastly, we will try to fill your spot and if we do, we will refund your money minus a 10% fee.

Fish and Game laws and ethics. We expect all our customers to obey all fish and game laws and to act as ethically as possible. If you wound an animal, that is the only one of that species you are allowed to shoot unless the guide feels the animal will be fine. Anyone who brings a scope with long range turrets must have covers on the turrets so they do not spin while going down the trail in the rifle scabbard. If you show up with exposed turrets, you will be asked to leave. We have had more problems with wounded game from wannabe long range shooters with exposed turrets than anything else.

We have found that most problems come from a lack of communication, and we have done everything we can to give you as much information as possible. We want you to enjoy your time with Mile High, but you need to be realistic about your expectations as well as ours. Our piece of God’s country is beautiful but rugged. It is there to be enjoyed but will kill you in a heartbeat if you underestimate it. We will work hard and do our best to accommodate you but the choice to have a good time is up to you. We prepare as best we can for your trip, but mother nature gets the last word in how your trip ultimately plays out.

Wrangell National Park

Guided Grizzly Bear Hunts Alaska

An exciting adventurous hunt..

Wrangell National Park

About Our Grizzly Hunts

The challenge of the arctic grizzly lures the truest of hunters. Arctic grizzlies are hard to locate, challenging to stalk, and very difficult to kill. Arctic Grizzlies are genetically the same species as the coastal brown bear. That is where the similarities end. Living hand to mouth on sparse high country fare of mountain dryess and berries and the occasional ground squirrel, arctic grizzlies are tougher and more aggressive than their coastal brothers. They have to be tougher in order to compete with the smaller food supply. The longer and colder winters in the high country also make for longer and better hair quality. Their size is smaller than their Coastal cousins, the hair quality invariably longer and better. The coloration patterns are also very unique to the individual animal. We have a very high population of mountain grizzlies and strongly encourage hunters to take them. Our guided grizzly bear hunts for these animals yield very good results.

Kodiak Island, Alaska Brown Bear Hunts

Guided hunts in the kodiak national wildlife refuge, offered by registered “alaskan bear hunting guide” joey klutsch.

Our Kodiak Brown Bear hunts, (Ursus arctos middendorffi), take place on Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge lands where we have a sole guide use area in Barling and Three Saints Bay area. We are the only ones permitted to guide hunters in this guide use area. We are permitted 3 hunters every spring and 3 hunters every fall. Most of the Kodiak Brown Bears we harvest are in the 9 to 9 ½ foot range, and there is certainly good possibilities to find bears that are 10 foot or better. Kodiak Island has consistently produced some of the largest Brown Bears on earth, with skull sizes that are at the very top of Boone and Crocket Record Books. Over the years we have taken many B&C class bears. Kodiak Island supports very healthy populations of these amazing animals. Hunting Kodiak Brown Bear is certainly the pinnacle of North American Hunting, and one of the premier big game species in the world.

Our Kodiak Brown Bear hunts, like ALL the hunts we do, are completely fair chase. Hunting brown bear is all spot and stalk. Our brown bear season on Kodiak Island takes place every spring April 20 – May 5 and every fall October 25 – November 8. Our hunts are 15 hunting days – the full duration of your permit. Having a full 15 days to hunt allows us to be very selective with the bears we harvest, going after the oldest age class’s largest boars. Our hunts are guided with 1 guide and 1 hunter, oftentimes 2 guides and 1 hunter.

Your Kodiak brown bear hunt begins with you arriving on Kodiak Island. We will meet you at the airport, take you to get your Brown Bear Permit, and any other paperwork you need. We then take you to one of the sporting goods stores to purchase any other gear you need. We usually stay the night in Kodiak at a local hotel and fly to camp the next day. Once in camp, we will orient you and you will be paired up with a guide, and often a second guide as well. Located only 100 yards or so from the sea, our main camp consists of traditional Kodiak style double-walled tents and Weatherport tents, all of which have diesel or propane heaters, generated electricity, and comfortable bunks. This camp is very comfortable and we serve top-notch food, much of it fresh caught from the sea!

We access our sizable hunt area using 18 – 24 foot ocean skiffs, as well as a small jet boat for accessing small creeks, and a zodiac raft. Each morning we get up early, eat a nice breakfast and utilize boats to get to one of the various bays of the area, where we will go to shore and hike to a glassing hill. Hunting is also superb just a short walk from the main camp. Often times we will see bears from the boats as we cruise to the various bays, and if the situation is right, we are able to put to shore and do a stalk. More frequently we put ashore in one of the bays and climb up on a hill or other high observation point and glass forbears for the day. Once the correct bear is located, we plan a stalk or if the situation is right, wait to ambush him. Large male bears are extremely intelligent and can be very difficult to get close to. They have an amazing sense of smell, good eyes, and good hearing. There are many variables that go into planning a successful stalk and patience is key to making it work out. Like all hunts, bear hunting especially takes great patience and a willingness to work hard in all weather. The hunter must be willing to spend countless hours scouring the countryside with his guide in difficult weather conditions.

At night we come back to the main camp, usually arriving after dark to eat a good meal and rest up for the next day. We also have the option to deploy satellite spike camps in the different bays or valleys, camping in comfortable 4 men Bombshelter tents with cots and portable heaters if necessary. This can offer a huge advantage over just using the boat, especially if you know there is a large bear in an area, or if you want to access other parts of the area that do not lend themselves to boat access. It gives us additional options, and along with using the boats, helps us give you the best chance at taking a bear. You have your own tent for sleeping and your guide will have his own tent.

We utilize the same camps and hunting areas for spring bear hunting that we do in the fall. The primary difference between spring and fall hunts is that in the spring we are watching for bears coming out of dens, looking for tracks in the snow, and watching for boars (male bears) traveling in search of sows (female bears) to breed with. Often times bears will be on the beach eating kelp and other carrion that washes up. There is also much more daylight in the spring. During the fall, bears are more concentrated on the creeks and streams, feeding on salmon, and eating roots and berries, preparing for denning. The bear’s main concern in the fall is getting fat enough to survive winter, whereas in the spring their main goal is breeding. Our success rates on large bears are equal during both seasons.

The experience of taking a large brown bear is unlike any other. The beauty of Kodiak with its amazing marine life, including whales of all types, porpoises, seals and sea lions, crystal clear blue water birdlife, all of which can be seen on a daily basis, will leave a lasting impression. A hunter who is dedicated and willing to accept the challenge of hunting this animal will always rank the brown bear on top of his/her list of hunting experiences.

Ukraine war latest: Armed ship destroyed in Crimea, Kyiv says; controversial US television host launches show in Russia

Ukraine says it hit and destroyed the Russian missile ship Tsiklon in Crimea over the weekend. Meanwhile, analysts say Moscow is seeking to draw out Kyiv's forces - as Putin makes another significant change to his cabinet.

Wednesday 22 May 2024 14:47, UK

  • Kyiv claims it has destroyed last Russian warship armed with cruise missiles in Crimea
  • Tucker Carlson launches new show in Russia
  • Putin sacks minister in new sign of shift in war strategy
  • European country now pushing to let Ukraine strike deep into Russia with Western weapons
  • Russia using 'understaffed and incohesive forces' in bid to draw out Ukrainian troops
  • Big picture: What you need to know as war enters new week

As we've not been providing rolling coverage of the war in Ukraine today, here is a quick update on what's been happening since this morning.

One of the most significant new stories is the UK accusing China of providing or preparing to provide lethal aid to Russia for use in the war against Ukraine.

Defence Secretary Grant Shapps told a news conference this morning that US and British defence intelligence had evidence "lethal aid is now, or will be, flowing from China to Russia and into Ukraine".

He called this a "significant development".

We also heard from the Kremlin this morning, which said "in-depth dialogue" was needed to reduce rising tensions between Russia and the West - particularly with regards to nuclear issues.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov accused the "collective West" of refusing to engage with Russia despite the potential dangers.

Here are more of the top stories:

  • Russian forces have taken over the village of Klishchiivka in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region, close to the city of Bakhmut, according to Russian news agencies
  • At least nine people have been injured in a Russian air attack on the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv
  • Russia accused Ukraine of using a drone to attack a non-nuclear facility at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, causing no critical damage
  • Moscow said it is bolstering its efforts to protect its energy infrastructure from drone attacks
  • Six children were handed over to Ukraine by Russia and reunited with their families, after a deal was brokered by Qatar.

We're pausing our coverage of the Ukraine war for the moment.

Scroll through the blog below to catch up on today's developments.

Vladimir Putin has praised the late president of Iran, Ebrahim Raisi, and said he was a "reliable partner".

Raisi was killed in a helicopter crash near the Azerbaijan border over the weekend along with his foreign minister and seven others.

Speaking on the leader, Mr Putin said he was "a man of his word" who carried out any agreements the pair made.

"He was truly a reliable partner, a man sure of himself, who acted in the national interest," Russian news agencies quoted Mr Putin as telling Vyacheslav Volodin, chairman of Russia's lower house of parliament.

"He was, of course, a man of his word and it was always good to work with him. What I mean is if we came to an agreement on something, you could be sure the agreement was carried out."

The Kremlin leader asked Mr Volodin, who will be attending memorial events in Iran, to pass on "words of our sincere condolences in connection with this tragedy".

Since the start of the war in Ukraine, Russia has strengthened political, trade and military ties with Iran in a deepening relationship that the US and Israel view with concern.

Heavy fighting in the Pokrovsk area in eastern Ukraine has forced Ukrainian troops to engage in "manoeuvres," the Ukrainian military's general staff have said.

Their report said Pokrovsk, northwest of the Russian-held city of Donetsk, remains the front's "hottest" sector.

"In some areas, the situation requires our troops to engage in manoeuvres," the general staff report reads.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has referred to the region and adjacent areas as "extraordinarily difficult" in his nightly video address.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said allies are taking too long when it comes to decisions on military support for Ukraine.

In an interview with Reuters, the Ukrainian leader said every decision which everyone came to was "late by around one year".

"But it is what it is: one big step forward, but before that two steps back. So we need to change the paradigm a little bit," he said.

"When we're quick, they fall behind. And then there's a gap - six, eight months of unpassed (aid) packages, and then two-three months of supplies - and a year goes by. We would like not to lose the advantage."

Mr Zelenskyy also said Ukraine had never used Western weapons on Russian territory.

A senior Russian diplomat has said that the EU plan to channel profits from frozen Russian assets to Ukraine would have "unpredictable" consequences, according to the TASS news agency.

According to TASS, Kirill Logvinov, Russia's acting permanent representative to the EU in Brussels, told Russia journalists: "The only predictable thing is that those in the EU will be obliged sooner or later to return to our country what has been stolen."

For context : In March the European Commission proposed transferring to Ukraine profits generated by Russian central bank assets frozen in Europe.

The plan would see 90% channeled through the European Peace Facility fund to buy weapons for Ukraine.

The rest would be used for recovery and reconstruction.

Russia's defence ministry has said it has begun a round of drills involving tactical nuclear weapons.

The exercises were announced by Russian authorities this month in response to remarks by senior Western officials about the possibility of deeper involvement in the war in Ukraine.

It was the first time Russia has publicly announced drills involving tactical nuclear weapons, although its strategic nuclear forces regularly hold exercises.

According to the ministry's statement, the first stage of the new drills include nuclear-capable Kinzhal and Iskander missiles.

The maneuvers are taking place in the southern military district, which consists of Russian regions in the south.

A Moscow court has ordered a Russian journalist who covered the trials of the late Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny and other dissidents must  remain in custody pending an investigation and trial on charges of extremism.

Antonina Favorskaya was arrested in March.

She is accused of collecting material, producing and editing videos and publications for Navalny's Foundation for Fighting Corruption, which had been outlawed as extremist by Russian authorities, according to court officials.

Today, Moscow's Basmanny district court ordered that she remain in custody until at least 3 August.

Kira Yarmysh, Navalny's spokeswoman, said earlier that Ms Favorskaya did not publish anything on the foundation's platforms and suggested that Russian authorities have targeted her because she was doing her job as a journalist.

Former Fox News presenter Tucker Carlson has launched his own show in Russia.

The controversial US media personality, who this year became the first Western journalist to interview Vladimir Putin since Russia invaded Ukraine, will host his show on the state-owned Russia 24 (Rossiya 24).

In the first episode, Carlson will discuss the dangers of ticks and Lyme disease.

Who is Carlson?

Carlson, who has been a vocal supporter of Mr Putin in the past, was sacked from Fox News in April last year.

He took up the prime-time weekday evenings spot on Fox News in 2016 with his show Tucker Carlson Tonight, and quickly established himself as a key player in the network and an influential voice in Republican politics.

The presenter often embraced conspiracy theories and far-right issues. He repeatedly questioned the efficacy of COVID vaccines and compared mandates to "Nazi experiments".

While he found success with viewers, his inflammatory comments caused some advertisers to distance themselves from the programme.

After his departure from Fox News he rebooted his show on X last year, calling Elon Musk's site the last big remaining platform to allow free speech.

Ukraine says it has destroyed the last Russian warship armed with cruise missiles that was stationed on the occupied peninsula of Crimea.

It comes after we reported earlier comments by Ukraine's military, which said they had hit the Russian missile ship Tsiklon (see post at 3.09pm).

Ukraine's military reported conducting a long-range attack that destroyed the Russian minesweeping navy vessel on Sunday and said it needed more time to confirm what else had been damaged.

"According to updated information, the Ukrainian defence forces hit a Russian project 22800 Tsiklon missile ship in Sevastopol, on the night of 19 May," the general staff said today.

The Ukrainian navy later said on X that the vessel had been "destroyed".

Ukrainian navy spokesperson Dmytro Pletenchuk said the Tsiklon was Russia's "last cruise missile carrier" based on the peninsula.

Tsiklon never fired a cruise missile while on active service, Mr Pletenchuk said in televised comments.

Crimea was annexed by Russia in 2014 and is home to Russia's Black Sea Fleet headquarters at Sevastopol.

The Russian defence ministry has not commented.
