If you're going to Bali from the US or some places in Europe, you may be able to find a direct flight. However, Air Asia is one of the cheapest and the carrier with most flights to and from cities in Asia. They have lots of flights from Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Bangkok etc to Bali. Thus you can book a flight to one of these cities then take another one to Bali.

How to Reach Bali from India

There are many Indian and foreign airlines operating from India to Kuala Lumpur. At Kuala Lumpur, you can connect to a flight which will take you to Bali. You can even get connecting flights to Bali via Singapore or Thailand from India. I've broken down some of the budget airlines and their pros and cons below.

Air Asia is one of the major airlines operating to and from destinations in Asia. What I like about this airline is that there are many flights operating from multiple cities in India at different times of the day. I had lots of options when it came to choosing the city to fly out of India and the time of the day. One minus point though is that there is no checked luggage included. You will need to purchase that additionally if you wish to carry checked luggage. Other than that, Air Asia operates like any other budget airline I've flown with in India.

Malindo Air

I loved travelling by Malindo Air. There was so much legroom that I wasn't accustomed to seeing on budget airlines. Every seat came with a cute little back pillow . But that wasn't even the best part about travelling to Bali on a Malindo Air flight. There were entertainment units installed which had the latest TV shows and movies. In fact, there were shows for kids and games as well. Another thing I liked was the 15 kg checked baggage that came free with my flight ticket purchase. However, be careful that your checked bag does not weigh more than the permissible weight because the airline charges heavy fees for excess weight. Believe me, I've made the mistake and regret the exorbitant amount I had to pay.

Bali has a lot of hostels with cool amenities. In fact, for most of my Bali trip, I had booked hostels. Each and every one of them came with a pool. How cool is that?! While I was in Canggu I stayed at the Canggu Castle hostel for quite a few days. The lounge and pool area was unlike anything I've ever seen in a hostel. Plus they had comfy beds, clean rooms and even a nice terrace. This hostel is located in the Berawa Canggu area which is close to a lot of beach clubs and some amazing cafes and restaurants.

Rent Airbnbs in Bali

Apart from hostels, I had even booked a few airbnbs to splurge and enjoy a private comfortable stay after a few hectic sightseeing days. Bali has a lot of amazing airbnbs - many of them even come with bathtubs, private pools and swings. The cost of these airbnbs ranges from extremely inexpensive to luxurious rates. There's something for every budget. What I loved about airbnbs in Bali though is that a lot of properties come with pools and nice balconies. Just enter your budget and amenities filters and search for the perfect stay for youself.

Bali Currency

The Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) which is used in Bali, Indonesia is a weak currency. As of 21 April 2020, 1 Indian rupee (INR) is equivalent to 204 IDR and 1 USD is equivalent to 15682.50 IDR. This gives a slight advantage to anyone making a budget trip to Bali from India or from the US or Europe.

While there are plenty of cafes and upscale restaurants in Bali, I found that the most cost-effective way to have a good meal was to visit a local warung. Warungs in Bali are small restaurants run by locals. A lot of warungs have a buffet system where you pick dishes you like and only pay for what you eat which can cost as less as IDR 25k (roughly INR 150 or 2 USD). On the other hand, you can even order dishes from a menu. At the local warungs where I ate, I was able to have hearty delicious meals at unbelievably cheap prices. I recommend Warung O-Em-Ge in Canggu for a good nasi goreng.

Getting Around Bali

Uber is an unpopular option in Bali. The taxi unions do not like having outside organisations taking away business. Therefore there's another alternative to Uber in Bali which is called Grab . It works just like any cab-hailing app does. Just download the app, enter your pickup point and your destination and choose the type of ride. Another popular alternative is to book GoJek bikes in Bali. GoJek is an app which you can use to order a 2-wheeler ride at dirt cheap rates. A person on a motorcycle will arrive, hand you a helmet and take you to your destination. Apart from that, you can even hire taxis or rent motorcycles to get around Bali.

While you can easily plan a budget trip to Bali just because the place offers everything for lesser prices compared to a majority of the world, there are a few tips you can use to ensure your Bali budget trip doesn't exceed the cost you had in mind.

Going from Bali Airport to the City

The Ngurah Rai airport in Bali is located at Denpasar approximately an hour's ride away from popular places like Canggu, Seminyak or Ubud. The ride from the Bali airport to the city centre can cost a lot if you give in to the exorbitant rates of the taxi operators there. The best way to avoid paying a heavy fare price to go from Bali airport to the city is to get out of the airport, cross the road to reach the parking and order a Grab or Bluebird taxi which charge nominal and fair rates. Beware of Currency Exchange Scams

While there are a few popular Bali scams, you need to especially be wary of the currency exchange scam. If you find that you're getting an exchange rate which sounds too good to be true, chances are that it probably is! The way the scam takes place is that some local currency exchange shop will offer you a very good exchange rate. Once you hand over your money, a person sitting behind a counter counts the local currency to give you. Then they hand over the money to you. So what's the catch? After they have counted the money, they drop a few bills without you noticing and then hand over the money to you. So before you exit, count the entire amount handed over to you. If possible, exchange your currency at the airport or inside a bank.

If you go through online forums, you'll come across a lot of people who say that they lost a lot of money after withdrawing money from an atm or they lost money after their card was swallowed by the atm. Another thing to remember is to never use an ATM inside a convenience store. Those ATMs are almost always rigged to swallow your card and scamming you out off a lot of money which can mess with your budget trip to Bali. Also, remember to always cover the keypad with your hand while entering your pin in the ATM machine and only use an ATM inside a bank .

Having a local sim card can benefit you in many ways. Firstly, you won't have to struggle to find wifi. Secondly, you can easily use Grab, Bluebird or GoJek to book cheap rides at your convenience anytime anywhere. There are plenty of nice stores in Canggu and Seminyak as well as some markets such as Love Anchor that are set up to sell products. On the other hand, you'll find a large market in Ubud at all times. Haggling is common in Bali but the best way to enjoy a shopping spree in Bali without breaking the bank is by going early in the morning. The Balinese believe the first sale of the day to be auspicious. So show up in the morning, buy all your products from the same shop and negotiate a fair price.

Public buses and scoooter/bike hire are obviously a lot less efficient, convenient, and comfortable. While you could save most of your transport costs, it would mean less time at the attractions and hence less value-for-money on your tour time, so we don't recommend them generally.

Rice terraces : The less popular rice terraces are generally free to visit. The most popular ones such as Jatiluwih and Tegallalang have entrance fees of about 4 or 5 dollars for tourists. The ticket sales help locls to cultivate the land and build concrete paths for better access to the rice fields.

Traveling during shoulder/low season (November to March helps to reduce airfare and touring costs substantially.
Use bicycle/scooter hire. Take the public buses. Share taxi rides with others.
The biggest tourist areas around Denpasar, on the southern and southeastern coasts, and around Ubud are the most expensive touring areas. For lower prices, you can go to the north coast, and the least expensive and least touristy area is western Bali.
Eat at small, local, inexpensive restaurants called warungs for authentic and cheap Balinese food.

BALI CULTURE & TRADITIONS- WHAT TO EXPECT

Despite the fact that most of the places in Indonesia have Muslims in the majority, Bali, on the other hand, follows Hinduism. Around 83.5 % of the Bali population follows Balinese Hinduism. Others are Christianity, Buddhism, and Islam.

Balinese people respect their culture and tradition and they are proud of it. In Bali, wherever you go, you’ll see the temples, rituals, ceremonies, and sacred offerings.

They are very well connected with their beliefs in gods and still manages to protect their original tradition for thousands of years.

It is also mandatory to wear a sarong for men and women when you enter the temple.

Canang Sari- The sacred offering

The offering is a daily tradition of Balinese people and you can find these offerings in front of shops, homes, temples, on grounds. This is their way of thanking God. Remember not to step on the offerings.

Balinese Dance

Watching Balinese dance will leave you awestruck. They beautifully their culture with dance and music.

The Kecak dance in Uluwatu Temple Amphitheater Jimbaran is one of the best places to enjoy Balinese dance. The other theaters where these dances are performed: Dedan show at the Nusa Dua Theater, Kampoeng Bali at RIMBA Jimbaran, etc.

Languages in Bali

There are two languages spoken in Bali. One is the local Balinese language and the other one is Indonesian Bahasa. Places like Ubud, North Bali, and in a village part of Bali, people speak the Balinese language.

On the other hand, people in Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu speak Indonesian Bahasa. Some basic words are:

HOW MUCH MONEY DO I NEED FOR BALI?

The average cost for the 7 day trip to Bali will cost anywhere between INR 50,000 to 60,000 including flights, accommodation, hotels, food, and sightseeing.

However, you can easily spend more or less. As compared to other places, Bali is very affordable.

HOW LONG TO VISIT BALI?

Bali is approximately 5,800 square km in size. Driving from Uluwatu, the southern part of Bali to Ubud, the central part of Bali can take 2-3 hours depending on traffic.

From Ubud to Lovina at Northern Bali, it can take around 3.5 hours- 3 hours drive and again depending on the traffic.

From Seminyak in the west to Sanur in the east, it can take around a 1-hour drive. I have spent 14 days to get a real taste of Bali. So, the answer to this question totally depends on you.

PROS AND CONS OF BALI

Friendly locals- The Balinese people are very friendly, kind, and they always have a smile on their face. Don’t expect a lot of Balinese people in the streets of Kuta or Seminyak. The streets of these places are full of foreigners.
Food- The varieties of foods available in Bali are incredible.
Cost of living- The cost of living in Bali is low and therefore, it is in a bucket list of every budget travelers.
Its serene beauty- You must have seen the Bali pictures on Instagram, but trust me those are nothing compared to actually visiting Bali.

Cons

Impact of Tourism- While walking down the streets of Kuta, locals try to sell their stuff, they force you to come to their restaurants, forcing you to take photos with a man in a superhero costume and then threatening you to give money. I find this part of Bali very different from other parts of Bali i.e, Ubud, Singaraja, Lovina, etc. I didn’t find Kuta a real Bali.
Pushy local- This is similar to the above-mentioned points. The shopkeepers will force you to visit their shop. This happens with us once in the Ubud street market. We visited a shop and we didn’t find anything interesting. So we left. The lady got angry at us and started throwing tantrums about us.
Traffic- Getting from one place to another in Bali requires a lot of patience. The roads are filled with scooters, cars, and buses. However, north Bali is less crowded than other parts of Bali.
Jam-packed Beaches- The beaches in Kuta were so crowded. Therefore, I just enjoyed the sunset there.

BALI FOR INDIANS

Bali has become one of the most preferred honey destinations and is continued to be the most popular destination among Indians. The number of Indians arriving in Bali is increasing year after.

There are various reasons why Indians choose Bali as a primary destination and some of them are:

Flights from India are frequent and affordable.
You do not require a visa for Bali.
Availability of low-budget hotels to private villa or resorts
The people in Bali are also Hindu and are very friendly, so it makes Indians more comfortable.
Indian foods are easily available at various restaurants.

BALI ESSENTIAL INFORMATION

1. electricity.

The electricity in Bali runs 220V. Bali uses a 2 pin socket. Therefore, you can buy the adaptor before going to Bali but if in any case, you forgot to bring, you can easily buy there at a very cheap price.

However, there are many hotels and private resorts/villas, can provide you if you ask for one.

2. Internet

The Internet in Bali is surprisingly very strong and reliable. You will find wifi in every cafes, restaurant, and bar.

3. Bali Visa Information

Indonesia provides a free visa for 169 countries and India is one of them. You can travel to Bali without any hassle for up to 30 days.

Therefore, if you’re traveling for tourism purposes for up to 30 days, you do not require a visa.

But, you must provide valid return tickets, a valid passport with a minimum validity of 6 months, and sufficient funds for your expenses during your stay in Indonesia and get visa exemption Stamps from the immigration counter.

On the other hand, if you’re planning to visit Bali for up to 60 days, there is an option of visa on arrival where you have to pay an amount of INR 2493 per person.

It is valid for 30 days, however, it can be extended for another 30 days by paying an additional amount of INR 3205.

4. Currency exchanges & scams

Bali is a safe island. However, there are many scams happening in Bali and the money changer scam is one of them. The local currency is the Indonesian rupiah (IDR) which comes in denominations of 1000, 2000, 5000, 10,000, 20000, 50,000 and 100,000 which can be very confusing.

Kuta and Seminyak are such places where currency exchange scams happen as they are the touristy areas. Therefore, always look out for authorized money changers.

We went to Bali’s top changer in Seminyak.

If you want, you can convert the currency before going to Bali as well or if you’re okay, you can come with the debit card or credit card as well with little cash. Various restaurants or shopping complexes accept credit cards with a 2-3% surcharge.

There are various ATMs where you can withdraw your money.

There are various factors through which you can which identify the authorized money changers such as:

They have UV light counterfeit detection.
They have a sign posted which indicates that you can’t wear helmets, sunglasses, masks or caps.
They will do the counting in front of you.

BEST TIME TO VISIT BALI

Although Bali has a tropical climate all throughout the year and can be visited and can be visited anytime, however the best time to visit Bali is from April to October.

Bali in Dry Season

Summer season is considered to be the dry season and the busiest season in Bali. From April to October, the weather is good and sunny with clear skies. If you’re a beach person this place is a perfect destination for you to visit during these months with less rain on islands, sunny days and the lowest humidity.

In addition to that, summer is the best season to enjoy outdoor activities such as trekking, scuba diving, surfing, cycling, snorkeling, etc. The Bali Arts Festival, which is held in June and July is popular in the country and should not be missed by art lovers.

The Bali Kite Festival is yet another one of the most popular festivals in Bali, where people celebrate the traditional art of Balinese kite making.

Furthermore, Galungan is the most important festival in Bali, where people celebrate the victory of Dharma over Adharma. As it is the busiest time of the year, don’t forget to book your hotels in advance.

Bali in Wet Season

Bali wet season falls between November to March and there is a lot of humidity in the air. This time of the year, Bali experience rainfall, which restricts o various outdoor activities.

However, you can also enjoy a relaxing spa day and local indoor activities. As these months are the wet season, Bali is less crowded and you may get everything at a lower price.

This is the best time to enjoy white water rafting, jungle trek, and Canyoning. One of the largest yoga festivals, Bali Spirit Festival takes place every year around March/April in Ubud.

HOW TO REACH BALI FROM INDIA?

by air.

The cheapest and fastest way to reach Bali from India is by Air. Ngurah Rai International Airport is the main airport in Bali, which is 13 km south of Denpasar and has frequent flights from major cities of India such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, and Hyderabad.

There are no direct flights, therefore, all the airlines have a layover in Kuala Lumpur, Singapore or Bangkok. If you book your flight tickets 5-6 months in advance, you can get a great deal and discount. Air Asia is considered to be one of the cheapest flights from India.

If you’re on a budget trip I would recommend you to opt for Air Asia, hence I would prefer Malaysian Airlines.

HOW TO GET AROUND IN BALI?

In Bali, going from one place to another can take time because of the traffic. There are a lot of options available to get around Bali.

1. Rent a bike or a moped

If you’re comfortable riding a bike or moped, I would recommend you to rent one as it is a cheaper option. It can cost anywhere around IDR 42,000 per day.

However, if you want to travel a longer distance for instance, if you want to travel from Ubud (central Bali) to Singaraja (North Bali) then hire a taxi.

Things to keep in mind while riding a motorbike or moped:

Make sure you get an International driving license
Always wear helmet
Don’t drink and drive

2. Use the ride-hailing Apps

Gojek and Grab have become the 2 dominant ride-hailing apps and has become popular in Bali. They are super affordable and easily available.

You just have to install these ride-sharing apps and you’re good to go. Grab app is just like Uber whereas, in Gojek, you can order a ride on a scooter.

3. Hire a Taxi

Bluebird taxis are the most trustworthy tax services in Bali. They are safe and goes by the meter. Just like Grab, Bluebird has an app that you can download and pay via credit card.

Make sure you don’t get confused by other blue taxis. The bluebird taxis have written Bluebird on them.

4. Rent a car and a driver

We find it an easy way to get around in Bali as we wanted to move on our own pace. We hire a car and a driver for 10 hours for IDR 5,50,000. You can also hire a car and drive it yourself. Similar to India, Bali is a right-hand drive.

5. Taking shuttle buses

With tourist shuttle bus services, you can travel from one point to another at a very affordable price. You can buy the tickets from Kura-Kura ticket booths or on the bus. The bus route includes stops in Seminyak, Kuta, Ubud, Nusa Dua, Jimbaran, Legian, and Sanur.

BALI ATTRACTIONS AND EXPERIENCES

Bali is a land of temples and Ulun Danu Beratan Temple is one of them. The temple is built in 17th-century and is one of the most popular temples in Bali.

A large number of tourists visit all around the year. Located about 1200 meters above sea level in Lake Beratan, it has the most flawless views north Bali surrounded by natural beauty.

2. Kintamani and Mount Batur viewpoint

If you’re looking for some adventure in Bali, then you must head to Mount Batur which is 1,700 meters above sea level and is situated in Kintamani. Mount Baur is one of the most popular and active volcanoes in Bali and you can take a tour to the top just to get a spectacular view of the sunrise.

The trek usually starts at 4 am and you have to get a guide to go there. The mountain is encircled with the beautiful lake which makes the sunrise even more astonishing.

When you reached the top, the locals serve you the eggs for breakfast boiled in the volcano.

However, if you can’t trek to the peak, head over to Mount Batur’s viewpoint which is located at the western edge of Mount Batur and mesmerize the beauty of it while sipping a cup of coffee.

3. Gitgit Waterfall

About 300 meters above sea level, Gitgit waterfall is one of the most popular waterfalls and one of the most Instagram worthy places visited by tourists. Gitgit waterfall is located in Gitgit Village, Singaraja and is surrounded by lush green jungle and clove plantation.

Even though this place is a little touristy, the Gitgit waterfall is worth a visit. The Gitgit waterfall consists of 3 waterfalls. I will take around 15 minutes to reach the waterfall. There are toilets and changing facilities at the base of the waterfall.

Entry Fee- IDR 20,000

Timing- Open from 7:00 AM

Parking- Free

4. Sekumpul Waterfall

Locally known as Air Terjun Sekumpul, Sekumpul Waterfall has been yet another most popular waterfall in Bali. There are three ways through which you can enter to Sekumpul waterfall- view only, medium trekking, and long trekking.

In recent times, the entrance fee of the Sekumpul waterfall as been increased to support the local economy, to maintain infrastructure, and to respect local customs. Moreover, it has become mandatory to hire a guide when you’re paying your visit to the waterfall.

View Only- The “view only” entry fee is IDR 20,000 per person where it allows to see Sekumpul waterfall only

Medium Trekking- The entry fee is IDR 125,000 per person which includes a guide, donation to the local village, and you’’ visit Sekumpul and other hidden waterfalls.

Long Trekking- The entry fee is IDR 2,00,000 per person which includes a guide, donation to the local village, and you’ll get to visit Sekumpul waterfall, hidden waterfalls, and triple-falls of Fiji waterfall.

5. Air Panas Banjar Hot Spring

Experience a truly Balinese culture by bathing with the locals at Air Panas Banjar Hot spring. Located in the hills of Banjar village, the water of Air Panas Banjar Hot spring is considered as “holy” by locals.

The temperature of the water is 38 degrees Celsius. It makes the water very pleasant for the relaxation. It gives you water massage and recreational experience.

There are changing rooms where you can change. There are various souvenirs shops and restaurants as well.

6. Lovina Beach

Lovina beach is the primary attraction of North Bali. There are various things you can do at Lovina beach, for instance, watch the sunrise go for snorkeling and diving, etc.

The main attraction at Lovina beach is watching Dolphin. It is popularly known for early-morning boat trips to see the dolphins.

Attractions in South Bali

1. tanah lot.

Tanah lot is one of the most iconic temples in Bali located around 20 km northwest of Kuta. The temple is popular because of its unique and amazing seashore setting on a rocky island.

Built-in the 16th century, Tanah lot is one of the most sacred, largest, and holiest Hindu temples for the Balinese people.

In addition to that, there are a lot of souvenir shops and restaurants to the onshore site. Spend some relaxing time in some of the restaurants watching sunsets.

Entrance fee- IDR 60,000

2. Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park

Located at Ungasan, Badung, Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park or GWK is devoted to the Hindu God Vishnu and his mount Garuda, a mythological bird who became his companion.

It has an area of about 60 hectares and is located at an altitude of 263 meters above sea level. There is a monumental statue of Garuda Wisnu standing about 276 meters above the sea level.

There is a statue of Garuda bird, lotus Pond, Garuda cinema, and Wisnu plaza where various traditional Balinese arts are performed.

Entry Fee- IDR 125,000. An additional fee of IDR 200,00 if you want to enter the Garuda Wisnu Kencana statue.

Entry Time- 8:00 AM – 9:00 PM

3. Pura Luhur Uluwatu Temple

The Pura Luhur Uluwatu temple is a Balinese Hindu sea temple and is located in Uluwatu. The temple is nestled at the edge of a 230 feet cliff or rock with a view of the Indian ocean.

This temple is considered to be the symbol of spiritual beliefs for Balinese. To enter, you’ll have to wear a sarong.

Here are various reasons why you should visit the Uluwatu Temple.

The Sunsets at Uluwatu temple are magical.
The famous Kecak dance portrays the Ramayana. It starts from 6:00 Pm to 7:00 PM. To reserve the seat make sure you arrive early.

4. South Bali beaches

Spend some time of the day relaxing at the beach or just head over to the beach for a spectacular view of the sunset. On my trip to Bali, I spend an evening watching the most beautiful sunset at Seminyak Beach.

Head over to any of the beaches in South Bali such as Nusa Dua beach, Bingin Beach, Dreamland Beach, Balangan beach, Seminyak beach, Kuta Beach, etc., and spend quality time there just relaxing. I find Bali beaches very crowded, especially Seminyak and Kuta beach.

Locally known as Goa Gajah, Elephant Cave Temple is an archaeological site and the popular tourist attraction in Bali. It has temples, fountains, and ponds. A perfect place for people who want to learn more about Indonesian architecture as the cave represents the carvings and the stone works in a comprehensive manner.

In addition to that, there is an idol of Lord Ganpati and 3 Lingams which represent Lord Shiva and Shakti.

Entrance fee- IDR 15,000 per person

2. Monkey Forest

The most popular tourist attractions in Ubud, the sacred Monkey Forest is a rainforest and is home to monkeys, ponds, banyan trees, and flowing streams.

There are more than 600 monkeys and over 115 species of different kinds of trees in the forest. Be careful and follow rules to avoid any kind of difficulty.

Entrance Fee- IDR 80,000 per person

Timing- 8:00am – 6:00pm

3. Tegenungan waterfall

Just like temples, Bali is home to a number of waterfalls. Tegenungan waterfall is located 12 km away from The Monkey forest. As it is close to Ubud, expect a lot of crowds. However, it is definitely worth the visit because of its mesmerizing beauty.

4. Tegalalang and Jatiluwih Rice Terraces

Bali Bird & Reptile Park is home to more than 1000 birds and is located 13 km away from the Goa Gajah Temple. Head over to the park early in the morning to avoid the crowd.

The park is properly maintained and you can feed the birds as well.

If you’re a beach lover then head over to Kuta, Seminyak, Sanur, or Nusa Dua. In addition to that Kuta and Seminyak are known for their fabulous nightlife. This place is full of nightclubs, high-end resorts, bars, shopping malls, etc. There are a lot of accommodation options at a good price right by the beach. Some of the best hotel or resort options are Bali Bobo in Kuta, Amnata Resort in Kuta, Seminyak beach resort, Samabe Bali Suites & Villas in Nusa Dua, and The Janan Villa in Sanur.
On the contrary, Ubud is famous for its rice terrace, temples, Yoga, Boutique shops, Balinese art & craft, and Balinese culture. Ubud is considered to be the true essence of Bali. Best hotels and resorts in Ubud are Den Den Mushi Homestay, Hotel Puriartha, and Bambu Indah resort.
My personal recommendations are Sanglung Villa in North Bali for a calm and relaxing vacation, experience the open-air bamboo house in the middle of the jungle in Tabanan village, and sleep under the sky in a bubble hotel in Tampaksiring. There are various booking options available, but prefer booking from Airbnb.

WHERE TO EAT IN BALI?

In Bali, you can find varieties of food which include Indian food as well. There are tons of restaurants serving Indian food. But I recommend trying local authentic foods.

Nasi Campur- Rice served with mixed vegetables, fish or meat. You can have it at Warung Wardani in Denpasar.
Nasi Goreng- One of the most popular dishes of Bali. It is so popular that you can see it on the breakfast menu as well.
Mie Goreng- Similar to Nasi Goreng, instead of fried rice, it is fried noodles served with vegetables. You can have it in Cafe Kami in Seminyak.
Pisang Goreng (Fried Bananas) – This is a type of desert where they fried bananas and served with honey or palm sugar syrup. You can find it in various restaurants and one of them is a Warung Classic in Munduk.
We had a coffee at the Sari Mountain view restaurant at Kintamani with a mesmerizing view of Mount Batur. They also provide a buffet that costs IDR 3,00,000 for two people.

Queen’s Tandoor in Seminyak- It is an amazing restaurant with beautiful decor served varieties of Indian food.
Indian Delites in Ubud- Along with North Indian foods, It serves delicious South Indian food as well.

Bali has so much to offer when it comes to shopping and that too at very affordable prices.

NIGHTLIFE IN BALI

Besides culture, tradition, temples, food, Bali is also famous for its nightlife. There are people who come to Bali only for nightlife and if you’re one of them, head over to Kuta, Seminyak, and Canggu.

The best nightclubs in Bali are in South Bali. According to locals, Kuta has become mini Australia.

Learn basic Local Language- Learn a few local words and it will make them feel good.
Always bring Sarong at the temples- However, they provide sarong outside every temple, but it’s good if you carry one.
Negotiate when you’re shopping- Bali is a shopping paradise as well. They will tell you the price on a higher side. Therefore, don’t accept the first price they quote and bargain down to 50% or even more than that.
Don’t drink the tap water.
The first thing you should do after arriving in Bali is to get a Sim card. They are very cheap and are easy to install.

Excellent. Planes are a little older and could get some refurbishment, but besides that everything was excellent.

Not good. Flight was purchased for my father who needed medical assistance to board and transfer due to a heart condition. No one at Hong Kong from Cathay was there to assist and he barely made the connection. When I talked to him he could barely breath and was not sure he was going to make it. Really poor service even though the ticket stated he needed a wheelchair assistance.

Crew experience was more transnational, seats were so close together (LtoR and FtoB) that it was difficult to enjoy much of anything. When the person in front leaned back, there is no space for me. Sadly it was a flight to be endured not experienced.

Indigo attempts to make you pay for a seat during check in. I opted to not do this. The result - they allotted me and my minor son seats apart. In the interest of making maximum money, they seem to have lost common sense too. Similarly, even during the flight, the crew are busy trying to serve food to those who’ve already paid for it. By the time they’re done, it’s time to land and no one else is able to get anything. Sadly this seems to be what makes them profitable, customers just need to bear with it till a better airline comes along.

I did not like the communication gap existing amongst the staff and the customer. My flight to Nagpur was delayed by two and half hours but it was informed to me on email ( not by W.A. or SMS) when I have already left my home in Baner area. I was painfully detained at airport with luggage when the gate no. 10 was changed to 5. I'll never recommend your flight to anybody.

Seats don't recline, no charging points. New aircraft and very clean. Crew should serve some water atleast.

There was inordinate delay without any plausible reason. This has become a normal feature of Indigo now a days.

Communication was terrible. Flight was delayed for 4-5 hours in DC (on the front end, and also after we boarded, we had to get off - some issue with fueling the old plane correctly). There was little to no information on timing or what was happening. Once we reach Delhi airspace, apparently there was weather that caused us not to land - we were actually near the ground, saw the run way, and lifted back up to the sky after being sooo close. Then we circled for about 30 minutes, and they decided to go to Jaipur to land until the weather cleared and to refuel. Again, once we landed in Jaipur (wrong city), there was little to no information on timing or what was happening. Then we heard that the crew was reaching their 24 hours. We sat on the place, on the tarmac for another 3 HOURS, with no food and not enough water for everyone on the flight. Then, they kicked us off the plane with no plan, in the wrong city. We went thru customs, got our bags (thank goodness), and had to ask a bunch of staff what was happening and what to do. Eventually, their soltuion was to bus people back to Delhi (like 6 hours we were told) but not everyone would fit on the bus, and unknown timing on when it would leave. At this point it was 9PM (we were scheduled to arrive in Delhi at 11AM...). My husband and I decided to risk it and take a cab that we had to pay ourselves (about $200 US dollars) to get to Delhi (about 5 hour drive). We both had terrible trips back to the US as well - almost missed connecting flight, forced to pay for carry-on luggage (a small back pack!) and duty-free goods by the Air India staff last minute. Just terrible experience all around. Never again with AI! The ONLY good thing was the air hostesses were kind and patient - example: they made sure people with food allergies got their correct. However, the TV's did not work so I'm glad we brought our own entertainment.

The Air India lounge in Delhi , was very disappointing! The food was of poor quality and options were limited especially for vegetarians!! Beverages were fine. The in flight crew was excellent! . They helped me with my seat controls - the controls did not work without a hassle or assistance!! A very poor showing for a Business cabin!!! Post flight , the wheel chair passengers ( including Me) were “ shepherded and left waiting twice (an hour or more) before taking us to immigration! I chose to Fly Air India because I want. to patronize our National carrier with the hope that the experience will improve!!! Regrettably, I will have to look at other options for my next trip to India

Entertainment system was not working and was told I would get a voucher and have not got one. No toiletries were available not even a toothbrush false sweet talk by ground staff

Worst International flight I ever had in my whole life time. Boarding is the worst of all and flight experience was also not good. Screens were not working, seats were not comfortable and lot more.

Air India needs to launch new planes. Seats are worn out, most of the plane's TV screens wasn't working, USB charging ports wasn't working as well so I can charge my phone & watch my download movies, Food was mediocre, the plane smells. How can Air India put through their customers with this bad experience? This complaint needs to get escalated to the upper management. How shameful is the upper management to improve this plane? The flight is going back & forth from NEW YORK & DELHI. Two of the big cities in the world and this is how your experience is for sitting in a plane for 12+ hrs? Get your planes fixed ASAP Air India (TATA Management do your job right).

One of my worst experiences. Nothing was working in the flight. Entertainment system was broken, seat was very uncomfortable, crew did not offer water until food was provided, lights were not working, attendant call was not working. In short everything was broken and duct taped.

My wife and I had been looking at pictures of Bali and were extremely smitten. The next day I said “Let’s take a vacation!”. Well, that’s how the story started and the rest is history. To describe Bali’s beauty would be a difficult task and you would have to experience it to truly know. The beaches will take your breath away and the temples will leave with a sense of calm and peace. This was one of the best holidays we had and made everlasting memories.

As we landed in Bali, we were received by our driver and transferred to our hotel. We spent the evening relaxing and later had for a delicious Indian dinner. 2. Bedugul Temple Tour: A Day Spent In Serenity

The next morning, we woke up to another action packed day. This day was all about getting a glimpse of the local culture of the city. We visited the Ulun Danu Beratan Temple as well as the famous Tanah Lot Temple during the tour. It was a wonderful experience and we would definitely recommend stopping by the Bedugul Temple Lake for a while. After a tour of the temples, it was evening so we headed back to our hotel for some rest.

3. Kintamani Volcano: A Splendid Sight

During our Bali trip from Kolkata, we also visited the famous active volcano, Mount Batur. We reveled in the beauty of the Crater Lake and took some wonderful pictures here. After a trip to Ubud village, it was time to head to Goa Gajah which is set in the village of Bedulu. On our way there we also stopped at Tegenungan waterfalls to spend some time by the water. After a refreshing break, we hit the road again. Upon arrival, we were mesmerized by the beauty of the place. To get into the temple you will need a Sarong which you can hire or carry with yourself.

5. Kendera: The Pool Villa Experience

Our Bali budget trip from India would have been incomplete without enjoying the experience of a private pool villa. We went for Vrindavan Ubud Villa which is located in Kendera. We were warmly welcomed with a delicious welcome drink and directed to our villa. Surrounded by rice fields, the ambiance for amazing and we had a wonderful time. We also visited the Kuta beach during the day we spent there. It was a great way to end out already fabulous trip to Bali.

The way we travel now

What sorts of journeys do today’s travelers dream about? Where would they like to go? What do they hope to do when they get there? How much are they willing to spend on it all? And what should industry stakeholders do to adapt to the traveler psychology of the moment?

About the authors

To gauge what’s on the minds of current-day travelers, we surveyed more than 5,000 of them in February and March of this year. 1 Unless otherwise noted, the source for all data and projections is McKinsey State of Travel Survey, 5,061 participants, February 27 to March 11, 2024. Our universe of respondents included travelers from five major, representative source markets: China, Germany, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and the United States. All respondents took at least one leisure trip in the past two years. We asked them more than 50 questions about their motivations, behavior, and expectations.

Results from this survey, supplemented with findings from focus groups and other additional research, suggest six vital trends that are shaping traveler sentiment now.

Travel has become a top priority, especially for younger generations

Sixty-six percent of the travelers we surveyed say they’re more interested in travel now than they were before the COVID-19 pandemic. This pattern holds across all surveyed age groups and nationalities. Respondents also indicate that they’re planning more trips in 2024 than they did in 2023.

Travel isn’t merely an interest these days. It’s become a priority—even amid uncertain economic conditions that can make budgeting a challenge. Travel continues to be one of the fastest-growing consumer spending areas, rising 6 percent over a recent 12-month period in the United States, even when adjusted for inflation. Only 15 percent of our survey respondents say they’re trying to save money by reducing the number of trips they go on. And in the February 2024 McKinsey ConsumerWise Global Sentiment Survey of more than 4,000 participants, 33 percent of consumers said they planned to splurge on travel, ranking it the third-most-popular splurge category—trailing only eating at home and eating out at restaurants. 2 Christina Adams, Kari Alldredge, Lily Highman, and Sajal Kohli, “An update on US consumer sentiment: Consumers see a brighter future ahead,” McKinsey, February 29, 2024.

Younger generations appear to propel much of the rising interest in travel (Exhibit 1). In 2023, millennials and Gen Zers took, on average, nearly five trips, versus less than four for Gen Xers and baby boomers. Millennials and Gen Zers also say they devote, on average, 29 percent of their incomes to travel, compared with 26 percent for Gen Zers and 25 percent for baby boomers.

Younger travelers are the most keen to venture abroad

Younger travelers are particularly excited about international travel. Gen Zers and millennials who responded to our survey are planning a nearly equal number of international and domestic trips in 2024, no matter their country of origin, whereas older generations are planning to take roughly twice as many domestic trips (Exhibit 2).

Younger travelers’ thirst for novelty might be motivating their urge to cross borders. Gen Zers say their number-one consideration when selecting a destination is their desire to experience someplace new. For Gen Xers, visiting a new place comes in at number eight, behind factors such as cost, ease of getting around, and quality of accommodation.

There might be a mindset shift under way, with international travel feeling more within reach for younger travelers—in terms of both cost and convenience. Younger travelers have become adept at spotting international destinations that feature more affordable prices or comparatively weak currencies. Low-cost airlines have proliferated, carrying 35 percent of the world’s booked seats over a recent 12-month period. 3 “Low-cost carriers in the aviation industry: What are they?,” OAG Aviation Worldwide, September 13, 2023. Meanwhile, translation software is lowering language barriers, mobile connectivity overseas is becoming cheaper and more hassle free, and recent visa initiatives in various regions have made passport-related obstacles easier to overcome.

It remains to be seen whether this mindset shift will endure as younger generations get older. But early evidence from millennials suggests that they’ve retained their interest in international travel even as they’ve begun to age and form families. It could be that this is a lasting attitude adjustment, influenced as much by the changing dynamics of travel as it is by youth.

Baby boomers are willing to spend if they see value

Baby boomers are selective about their travel choices and travel spending. Enjoying time with family and friends is their number-one motivation for taking a trip. Experiencing a new destination is less important to them—by as much as 15 percentage points—than to any other demographic.

Although older travelers appreciate the convenience that technology can offer, they prefer human contact in many contexts (Exhibit 3). For example, 44 percent of baby boomers—versus only 30 percent of other respondents—say they value having a travel agent book an entire travel experience for them. And only 42 percent of baby boomers have used a mobile app to book transportation, versus 71 percent of other respondents.

While this generation typically has more accumulated savings than other generations, they remain thoughtful about how they choose to spend. Their top two cited reasons for not traveling more are “travel is becoming too expensive” and “not having enough money to travel.” They make up demographic most willing to visit a destination out of season, with 62 percent saying they’re open to off-peak travel to bring costs down.

Baby boomers might be willing to spend strategically, in ways that make travel more convenient and less burdensome. For example, whereas 37 percent of Gen Zers are willing to take a cheaper flight to lower their travel costs—even if it means flying at inconvenient times or with a stopover—only 22 percent of baby boomers say they’ll do the same. But these older travelers don’t splurge indiscriminately: only 7 percent describe their attitude toward spending as “I go out all the way when I travel.” They’re much more willing to forgo experiences to save money, identifying this as the first area where they cut spending. Gen Zers, on the other hand, will cut all other expense categories before they trim experiences.

Whatever baby boomers’ stated feelings and preferences, they still account for a substantial share of travel spending. And they still spend more than younger generations—three times more per traveler than Gen Zers in 2023, for example.

The adventure starts before the trip begins

Travelers are delighting in crafting their own trips. Only 17 percent of survey respondents say they used a travel agent to book a trip in the past year. When asked why, respondents’ top-cited reason is that they want full control over their itineraries. Their second-most-cited reason? They simply enjoy the planning process. In fact, studies have shown that the anticipation of a journey can lead to higher levels of happiness than the journey itself. 4 Jeroen Nawijn et al., “Vacationers happier, but most not happier after a holiday,” Applied Research in Quality of Life , March 2010, Volume 5, Number 1.

When seeking inspiration during the planning process, respondents are most likely to turn to friends and family—either directly or on social media (Exhibit 4). Advice from other travelers is also sought after. Fewer and fewer travelers rely on travel guidebooks for inspiration.

Today’s travelers tend to view the planning process, in part, as a treasure hunt. Seventy-seven percent of respondents describe the research phase as an effort to ensure that they’re finding good deals or saving money. And all demographics describe “value for money” as the most important factor when choosing a booking channel.

Unexpected traveler archetypes are emerging

When we analyzed our survey results, we identified seven clusters of travelers who express shared attitudes and motivations toward travel. While the distribution of these archetypes varies across source markets, respondents within each archetype exhibit strong similarities:

Sun and beach travelers (23 percent of respondents). These vacationers travel rarely and spend frugally, preferring sun and beach destinations that are easy to get to. They like to relax and visit with family. They’re relatively more likely to place significant value on nonstop flights (72 percent, versus 54 percent overall) and are less interested in authentic and immersive experiences (only 13 percent say these are main reasons why they travel).
Culture and authenticity seekers (18 percent). These are active and high-budget travelers who typically spend more than $150 per day on holiday, love to sightsee, are willing to spend on experiences, and don’t want to settle for typical bucket-list destinations. Only 6 percent prioritize familiarity when choosing where to go—the lowest percentage of any traveler segment. This segment is also least likely (at 17 percent) to say they would shorten a holiday to save money.
Strategic spenders (14 percent). These travelers are open to selectively splurging on authentic, carefully curated experiences. But they keep a watchful eye on total spending. They’re willing to sacrifice some conveniences, such as nonstop flights, in the interest of cost savings.
Trend-conscious jet-setters (14 percent). Travelers in this high-budget group (they spend more than $150 per day when traveling) turn first to friends and family (79 percent) and then to social media (62 percent) when scouting destinations. Seventy-six percent say the popularity of a destination is an important factor, compared with 63 percent overall. And 75 percent say they focus on hotel brands when selecting accommodations.
Cost-conscious travelers (11 percent). This travel segment is made up of predominantly older travelers who travel rarely and frequently return to the same destinations and activities. They’re relatively more likely to care about the familiarity of a destination (54 percent, versus 35 percent overall) and the cost of the trip (76 percent, versus 65 percent overall).
Premium travelers (12 percent). This segment expects high-quality trappings when they travel, and only 20 percent say that cost is an important factor. These frequent travelers are especially selective about accommodation—they, on average, are more likely than travelers overall to care about brand, prestige, exclusivity, design, decor, amenities, and sustainability. Similarly to trend-conscious jet-setters, this traveler segment is, on average, more likely than travelers overall (at 27 percent, versus 18 percent) to be swayed by celebrities and influencers when choosing travel destinations.
Adventure seekers (8 percent). This younger segment enjoys active holidays that present opportunities to encounter like-minded travelers. Nineteen percent say they’re motivated by adventure and physical activities, and 15 percent say meeting new people is a major reason why they travel. They aren’t after large-group events; instead, they prefer small-group adventures. This segment prizes remoteness, privacy, and sustainability.

What travelers want depends on where they’re from

When asked what trips survey respondents are planning next, 69 percent of Chinese respondents say they plan to visit a famous site—a marked difference from the 20 percent of North American and European travelers who say the same. Chinese travelers are particularly motivated by sightseeing: 50 percent cite visiting attractions as their main reason for traveling, versus an average of 33 percent for those from other countries.

Emirati travelers, like their Chinese counterparts, favor iconic destinations, with 43 percent saying they plan to visit a famous site. They also have a penchant for shopping and outdoor activities. Fifty-six percent of respondents from the United Arab Emirates describe the range of available shopping options as an important factor when selecting a destination—a far higher proportion than the 35 percent of other respondents. And respondents from the United Arab Emirates report going on a greater number of active vacations (involving, for instance, hiking or biking) than any other nationality.

Travelers from Europe and North America are especially keen to escape their daily routines. Respondents from Germany (45 percent), the United States (40 percent), and the United Kingdom (38 percent) place importance on “getting away from it all.” Only 17 percent of respondents from China and the Middle East feel the same way. European travelers are particularly fond of beach getaways: respondents from the United Kingdom and Germany cite “soaking in the sun” at twice the rate of American respondents as a main reason they travel.

Travel is a collective story, with destinations as the backdrop

Younger generations are prioritizing experiences over possessions. Fifty-two percent of Gen Zers in our survey say they splurge on experiences, compared with only 29 percent of baby boomers (Exhibit 5). Gen Z travelers will try to save money on flights, local transportation, shopping, and food before they’ll look to trim their spending on experiences. Even terminology used by younger generations to describe travel is experience oriented: “Never stop exploring” is tagged to nearly 30 million posts on Instagram.

The value of experiences is often realized in the stories people tell about them. Books and films have spurred tourists to flock to specific destinations (for instance, when droves of Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman's Search for Everything across Italy, India and Indonesia [Viking Penguin, 2006] readers visited Bali). And travel has always been a word-of-mouth business, in which travelers’ stories—crafted from their experiences—can inspire other travelers to follow in their footsteps.

Social media is the latest link in this chain: a technology-driven, collective storytelling platform. Ninety-two percent of younger travelers in our survey say their last trip was motivated in some way by social media. Their major sources of social inspiration, however, aren’t necessarily influencers or celebrities (30 percent) but rather friends and family (42 percent). Consumers’ real-life social networks are filled with extremely effective microinfluencers.

Posting vacation selfies is a popular way to share the story of a journey. But a growing number of social media users are searching for ways to present their travel narratives in a more detailed and more enduring fashion, and new apps and platforms are emerging to help them do so. The microblogging app Polarsteps, which more than nine million people have downloaded, helps travelers plan, track, and then share their travels—allowing journeys to be captured in hardcover books that document routes, travel statistics, and musings.

Giving today’s travelers what they need and want

From our survey findings, important takeaways emerge that can help tourism industry players engage with today’s travelers.

Know customer segments inside and out

Serving up a one-size-fits-all experience is no longer sufficient. Using data to segment customers by behavior can help tourism players identify opportunities to tailor their approaches more narrowly.

Cutting-edge data strategies aren’t always necessary to get started. Look-alike analysis and hypothesis-driven testing can go a long way. Even without having data about a specific family’s previous travel patterns, for example, an airline might be able to hypothesize that a family of four traveling from New York to Denver on a long weekend in February is going skiing—and therefore might be interested in a discounted offer that lets them check an additional piece of luggage.

The same philosophy applies to personalization, which doesn’t necessarily need to be focused on a single individual. Merely having a clearer sense of the specific segments that a provider is targeting can help it craft a more compelling offer. Instead of simply creating an offer geared toward families, for instance, providers might build an offer tailored to families who are likely to visit in the spring and will be primarily interested in outdoor activities. And instead of relying on standard tourist activities, providers might find ways to cater to more specific traveler interests—for example, facilitating a home-cooked meal with locals instead of serving up a fine-dining experience.

Help travelers share their journeys

Today’s travelers want to share their travel stories. And friends and family back home are more likely to be influenced by these stories than by anything else they see or hear. Providers should consider ways to tap into this underexploited marketing channel.

Hotels can install a photo booth that enables guests to share pictures from their journeys. Guests can be given small souvenirs to take home to their friends and family. Hotels might also send guests photos on the anniversary of a trip to help jog happy memories and prompt a future booking.

Given the right incentives, customers can act as a distributed team of marketers. Reposting guests’ social media photos and videos, for example, or spurring engagement with contests and shareable promo codes can encourage travelers to become evangelists across an array of different channels.

Recognize younger generations’ unquenchable thirst for travel

Younger travelers’ remarkable desire for experiences isn’t always in line with their budgets—or with providers’ standard offerings. A new generation of customers is ripe to be cultivated if providers can effectively meet their needs:

Travel companies can better match lower-budget accommodations with younger travelers’ preferences by incorporating modern design into rooms and facilities, curating on-site social events, and locating properties in trendy neighborhoods.
More affordable alternatives to classic tourist activities (for example, outdoor fitness classes instead of spas or street food crawls instead of fine dining) can be integrated into targeted packages.
Familiar destinations can be reinvented for younger travelers by focusing on experiences (for instance, a street art tour of Paris) instead of more traditional attractions (such as the Eiffel Tower).

Older generations remain a major source of travel spending. Providers can look for ways to keep these travelers coming back by meeting their unique needs:

While older travelers are growing more comfortable with technology, they continue to favor human interaction. Stakeholders can cater to this preference by maintaining in-person visitor centers and other touchpoints that emphasize a human touch.
Older travelers are generally fond of returning to familiar destinations. Providers can look to maximize repeat business by keeping track of guest information that aids personalization (such as favorite meals or wedding anniversary dates). Identifying historical behavior patterns (for example, parents repeatedly visiting children in the same city) can help providers make targeted offers that could maximize spending (for example, a museum subscription in that city).
The off-seasonal travel patterns that older travelers often exhibit might open opportunities for providers to create appealing experiences scheduled for lower-occupancy periods—for example, an autumn wellness retreat at a popular summer destination.
Older travelers’ propensity to visit family and friends opens the door to offerings that appeal to a range of generations, such as small-group trips pairing activities for grandparents and grandchildren.

Travelers are more interested in travel—and more willing to spend on it—than ever before. But the familiar, one-size-fits-all tourism offerings of the past have grown outdated. Today’s travelers want to indulge in creative experiences that are tailored to their priorities and personal narratives. The good news for providers: new technology and new approaches, coupled with tried-and-true strengths such as managerial stamina and careful attention to service, are making it easier than ever to shape personalized offerings that can satisfy a traveler’s unique needs.
