Best time to visit australia.

Being such a large place, Australia has a wide range of climates, so all year round, there is somewhere great to visit.

Summer (December to February) can get very hot but is perfect for beach-going and other outdoor activities. In the far north, it is also the wet season, which can get quite humid, and some beaches may be closed due to jellyfish or 'stingers'.

Winter (June to August) is pleasant and dry in the north but can get quite cold in the south, especially in Tasmania and Victoria, where snowfall is common.

Spring and autumn are great times to visit Australia as the weather is milder but still warm enough for swimming in northern areas.

Regardless of daytime temperatures, nights can get very cold in the desert areas of Central and Western Australia, so prepare accordingly.

The main school holiday period is from Christmas to late January and is considered the peak travel time within Australia; expect popular tourist spots to be crowded during this time.

From large malls and boutique shopping strips to weekend arts and crafts markets and vintage shops, Australia is a top place to shop. Shopping in Australia may not be cheap, but there are plenty of unique finds and original souvenirs to bring home. Before heading home, check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to import certain items back into your home country. New Zealand, for example, has strict quarantine laws.

Things to buy in Australia

1. First Nation art

The quality of Aboriginal art is excellent in the Top End and Central and Western Australia. Be sure to buy from reputable galleries and organizations to ensure authenticity and fair prices for artists. Community-run organizations are typically the better choice.

If you’re looking for one, Coober Pedy has the best quality and variety on offer.

These precious gems are plentiful in Broome due to the booming pearling industry.

4. Modern art

Melbourne and Hobart are modern art and craft hot spots, making them great places to pick up one-of-a-kind mementos.

Geography and environment

The continent of Australia is known for being one of the flattest, hottest, and driest places on earth, but despite this, there is an astounding variety of terrains and environments on this island nation. While large areas of Australia are covered in desert, there are also tropical rainforests, alpine snowfields, dense bushland, beaches, gorges, lakes, and rivers to be found.

Australia’s national parks are home to many species of birds and mammals not found in the wild anywhere else in the world, including kangaroos, koalas, wallabies, and wombats.

Boasting many stunning white sand beaches, Australia has a coastline like none other. From busy Bondi to surfing icons like Bell’s Beach and Tasmania’s stunning Wineglass Bay, there are endless places to swim, surf, snorkel and paddle.

Despite Australia’s large landmass, most people tend to live in urban, coastal cities. Faster-paced cities like Sydney, Brisbane, Perth and Melbourne hold much of the population, as do regional satellite cities such as Albury, Dubbo, Bunbury, Townsville, Newcastle and Geelong.

Outback towns have a unique flavor and a distinct way of life; things are slower here, and due to smaller populations, space is plentiful, with most locals relying on agriculture for a living. Venturing away from the city to visit the Outback and rural areas of Australia is highly recommended, as it gives travelers the chance to see a different side of Australia.

Culture and customs

With a strong history of immigration, modern Australia is made up of people from many different cultural backgrounds. This mix makes Australia an endlessly fascinating place to visit, as travelers will be exposed to a variety of different customs and cultures during their stay. From the ancient, spiritual ways of the First Nations population to the wide array of faiths, foods, and festivals on display in the big cities, Australia is a cultural melting pot.

Despite the differences, there are many things that unify the people of Australia. Sports, in particular cricket, soccer, and football (Australian Rules), are played and watched by the masses, irrespective of age, race, gender, or income. Large sporting events like the AFL Grand Final, Melbourne Cup Day, and the Boxing Day Cricket Test have universal appeal for Australians.

Australians relish public holidays, with national and state holidays offering locals time to relax with friends and family over a barbecue or picnic. Making use of Australia’s natural environment is also paramount during this time, with outdoor activities like bushwalking, swimming at the beach, or lazing in the park popular with locals.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways of experiencing a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savoring a cheap eat, or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Australia is a land that has been built by immigrants, and these multicultural influences are evident in the wide array of food available. In the cities, it’s possible to find world-class Vietnamese, Turkish, Italian, Greek, Chinese, Thai, Japanese, and Indian restaurants, as well as excellent gastro-pub fare. Head to the Outback, and you’ll find authentic ' bush tucker ', simple campfire meals, and sizzling barbecues.

Food to try in Australia

1. Fresh seafood

With such an impressive coastline, it’s no wonder fresh oysters, prawns, mussels, and ‘balmain bugs’ are devoured by locals and savored by visitors. For those on a budget, there’s nothing wrong with eating fish and chips on the beach.

Australia creates some of the best wines in the world at South Australia’s Barossa Valley, Western Australia’s Margaret River, and New South Wales’s Hunter Valley.

Whether you’re downing a can of VB in Victoria or sipping micro-brewed ale in Sydney, sharing a beer with mates is a social experience not to be missed when in Australia

4. Hot pies

An Australian classic – savory meat pies (or vegetable pies for vegetarians) are best eaten with tomato sauce and are easily found and served in city cafes, country bakeries, and football matches around Australia.

What's the transport like in Australia?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators and are heaps more fun. Depending on which trip you're on while in Australia, you may even find yourself traveling overland.

Overland tours

Australia is a big place – like, huge.   Overland tours   involve a lot of time on the road covering long distances, and sometimes the landscape can be pretty barren, so bring a book or some tunes to keep you company.

Traveling with Intrepid is a little bit different. We endeavor to provide travelers with an authentic experience to remember, so we try to keep accommodations as unique and traditional as possible.

Lodges are comfortable places to stay and offer a good night's rest after a day spent exploring Australia's natural beauty.

Permanent tented campsite

There's no need to put up your tent when you spend the night in a permanent tented campsite. You'll have a roof over your head and will bunk down on sleeper mats on the ground or camp beds, with access to a toilet/shower block. Tent sizes can vary depending on the trip you're on and the location you're visiting. Some of our permanent tented campsites are a little bit fancy, others are very simple. Unless you have booked a single supplement, you will be sharing a tent with another member of your group.

Our bush camping experiences are as diverse as Australia itself. Some trips offer swag camping under the twinkling stars, or you could be sleeping in a tent with access to simple toilet or shower amenities.

Some sites may not have access to a shower. However, the scenery at these magical spots makes it worth going without a bath for a day or so.

For bush camping and tented campsites, a pillow, pillowcase, bottom sheet and a swag/canvas bed roll are provided. While you're encouraged to bring your own sleeping bag, you can rent one as well.

Sometimes, a trip involves participatory camping, where everyone pitches in to help. Other times, a staff member is on hand to take care of things like cooking.

We provide accommodation at a variety of hotels around Australia. Some are rather upmarket, others are more basic, but all offer comfortable stays and ensuite facilities.

On some trips, we stay in hostels, which means your bed could be in a twin room or a shared dorm room. Some of these rooms have their own facilities, while others share facilities.

The little penguin is the smallest species of penguin. They are found on the coastlines of southern Australia and New Zealand. In Australia they are often called fairy penguins and in New Zealand they are known as little blue penguins or blue penguins. These penguins emerge from the shore at Phillip Island nearly every evening and make their way to their evening resting spots.

It’s always a good time to go backpacking in Australia! It’s generally quite hot in most parts of the country for the majority of the year except for the southern half of Australia during winter (June, July & August). But because Australia is such a big country, when it’s cold down south most people will head north and follow the sun!

From 10 to 28 days, our tour options include all transport, stunning accomodation, some meals, an awesome tour guide and an awesome group of new friends to travel with. Simply scroll down for our pricing, and secure a space on our trips from $400/ £200/ €200

You need a visa to travel to Australia. There’s information about the different visa options here https://www.introtravel.com/visas-oz/ If you are applying for a Working Holiday Visa make sure you apply for it at least a month before you are due to travel. If you have any questions about getting a visa for Australia then just get in touch with us!

Australia is one of the world’s most fascinating and diverse tourism destinations, offering a unique mix of stunning landscapes, exotic wildlife, modern cities and a rich cultural heritage. With its vastness and variety, the country attracts visitors from all over the world in search of memorable adventures.

The first thing that comes to mind when thinking about Australia is, without a doubt, its unique fauna. The country is home to a variety of iconic animals such as kangaroos, koalas, wombats and the platypus. Wildlife enthusiasts can explore national parks and nature sanctuaries where they have the chance to observe these incredible creatures in their natural habitat.

The Australian landscapes are equally spectacular. From the golden sand beaches of the East Coast to the stunning coral reefs of the Great Barrier Reef in the northeast, to the vast red plains of the Outback in the center of the country, Australia offers an impressive variety of natural environments. For outdoor lovers, there are endless opportunities for hiking, diving, surfing and other extreme sports.

Furthermore, Australian cities are vibrant and modern. Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth are dynamic urban centers offering a multitude of cultural attractions, restaurants, nightlife and shopping. The iconic architecture of the Sydney Opera House and the famous Sydney Harbor Bridge are just some of the urban attractions that delight visitors.

Top 10 Tourist Attractions in Australia

Before we delve into the central topic of this article, it is relevant to highlight some of the most popular tourist destinations in Australia to facilitate your search for tours, itineraries, and excursions that cater to your preferences.

As mentioned earlier, Australia is a fascinating country. Below, we present a list of the top 10 attractions and tourist cities that deserve to be visited in Australia:

  • Sydney Opera House: This architectural icon is one of the most recognizable structures in the world, famous for its unique design. Besides being an architectural marvel, it is a world-class entertainment venue.
  • Great Barrier Reef: Located off the northeast coast of Australia, the Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest coral reef system and a paradise for diving and snorkeling enthusiasts.
  • Uluru (Ayers Rock): Located in the heart of the Australian Outback, Uluru is a massive red rock formation with significant cultural importance to Aboriginal Australians.
  • Great Ocean Road: This coastal road offers spectacular views of the shoreline, including the famous rock formations known as the “Twelve Apostles.”

Is it better to travel independently or in group tours in Australia?

Regardless of the option you choose for traveling in Australia, whether independently or on a group tour , each has its advantages and disadvantages.

Opting for independent travel, for example, offers greater flexibility to plan your own itinerary and choose activities according to your preferences. This grants you the freedom to decide when and how to engage in activities, allowing you to explore Australia at your own pace. Moreover, this option can be more economical as you can control expenses based on your choices.

However, independent travel requires detailed planning, including research on accommodation, transportation, and activities. You need to be prepared to handle potential challenges, such as cultural and language differences, and take extra precautions related to safety , especially in more remote areas.

On the other hand, a group tour with a guide offers the companionship of fellow travelers and the opportunity to meet people with similar interests. Additionally, traveling in a group can provide a sense of security, especially if you are accompanied by an experienced guide familiar with Australia.

However, this option may somewhat limit your freedom to explore Australia independently since you will be following a predetermined itinerary and schedules set by the group.

In summary, the choice between traveling independently or in a group in Australia depends on your personal preferences. Evaluate your interests, time availability, budget, and comfort level when making your decision. Both options offer enriching experiences, and it’s up to you to decide which better suits your travel needs and desires.

Travel tips for Australia tours

If you’re considering booking a trip to Australia, here are a few things you might want to know:

  • Read up on the local slang. While Australians still speak English, it’s not the same as it is in the U.S. You’ll notice this as soon as our Australia tours begin!
  • If you’ll need internet access, get a hotspot on your phone. It’ll be a lot more reliable (and cheaper) than hotel or public WiFi.
  • Cars drive on the left, so look both ways before crossing the street.
  • The same applies for sidewalks—so make sure you walk on the left, too!

That depends on how much you want to see and do on your trip to Australia. Our Australia travel packages range from 12-22 days, so there’s truly something for everyone.

First, remember that when it’s winter in North America, it’s summer in Australia, and vice versa. While Australian winters are much milder than they are in the majority of North America, you’ll still want to bring a warm jacket on our Australia tours.

You’ll also want to bring some reef-safe sunscreen. The sun can be much stronger in Australia—even during their winter.

Some of the most popular places to visit include:

  • Melbourne, a hip city full of fantastic food
  • The Great Barrier Reef, the world’s largest coral reef system
  • Uluru, a sacred sandstone site in the Outback
  • The Sydney Opera house, an iconic site on the water

On our trips to Australia, there’s no shortage of local cuisines to indulge in. Here are the foods you’ll have to try:

  • Barbecued “snags,” also known as sausages
  • Meat pies, a savory, sweet Australian delicacy
  • Vegemite (it’s an acquired taste)
  • Tim Tams. Bite off opposite corners and sip your tea with it for what the locals call a Tim Tam Slam!

As you plan your trip to Australia, keep in mind that you will need to purchase an individual visa from the Australian government or the Electronic Travel Authority website. You need a valid passport to apply and it only takes a few days to process.

One of the main benefits of going on a guided tour of Australia is that you’ll always have an expert by your side to help you find the best spots. All of our Australia tour packages feature local guides, so you’ll get an authentic perspective of the country. Plus, when you go to Australia on a group tour, you’ll get to experience the country while making new friends in your group, too.

Australia FAQ's

Is it safe to travel australia.

Australia is by far one of the safest countries in the world. Crime is generally pretty low and the risk of being robbed, mugged or attacked is extremely unlikely. But, like every country in the world you do have to use basic rules of common sense and treat the locals with respect. However, the simple answer is YES, Australia is super safe to travel!

Where should I start my gap year to Australia, Sydney or Melbourne?

It all boils down to personal preference (or what your friends tell you to do 😂). We would always suggest doing your research, to help with the decision making. We've covered a whole bunch of different articles on both Sydney and Melbourne to help you decide.

But, if you want a short 1 line breakdown of each, here we go...

Sydney : Known for its famous harbour, warm weather and cosmopolitan vibe. You’ll never be far from the beach or a gym, that's for sure. Sydney beach suburbs are full of surfers and there’s always a barbie nearby.

Melbourne : Known for its hipster vibes, world famous coffee and artsy laneways. Melbourne is a city with a tonne of character & a very European flair. This multicultural city was rated ‘The World’s Most Livable City’ 7 years in a row.

Should I do a Gap Year to Australia?

There is no better country in the world to work abroad than Australia. With a working holiday visa process that is world leading and endless possibilities when it comes to finding work you’d be crazy not to do it! The work-life balance in Australia makes it such an attractive destination for students of all ages. Plus...the life experience you’ll gain from doing a year abroad in Australia is truly invaluable!

How can I travel the East Coast of Australia?

One of the absolute bucket list things to do when visiting Australia is travelling the East Coast. There are lots of different ways to do it but 1 thing is for sure...you need a place to start. 2 of the most popular places to start are Sydney and Melbourne . You can also start in Brisbane or Cairns but most travellers prefer to start south and make their way up the famous coastline.

The next most important thing to consider is ‘How’. Travelling the East Coast of Australia is commonly done either in a hop-on hop-off bus or you can rent a campervan.

I’m travelling alone, will I meet other people?

Australia is such an incredible place to travel solo, it’s safe, everyone speaks english and there are tonnes of travellers just like you living the dream down under. What makes these starter packages so popular is the hassle free experience end to end. The crew will pick you up when you arrive, get you settled in and help you plan your life for both work and travel.

What kind of people come on these group tours?

It doesn’t matter whether you’re travelling solo or coming with a friend, the trips are full of different people from all corners of the world.

You can be a student on a Gap Year to Australia, a professional taking a short holiday from work or just deciding to go on a backpacking adventure to escape life... these Australia Group Tours are the perfect solution!

What are the benefits of travelling as a group?

Travelling Australia in a group Vs travelling solo is a very different experience. Travelling alone you often feel like you have more freedom but you will need to plan out your days to get the best of each. Travelling solo does give you the ability to have way more lazy days! Travelling Australia as a group will involve more structure in your day achieving way more than when travelling on your own.

Choosing the right travel company will allow you to not only do the tourist spots but also head off the beaten track a little more.

Another huge benefit of travelling as a group is that you will arrive and make an instant group of friends... we see groups arriving as complete strangers and leaving as best friends! Travelling solo can sometimes be a little lonely if you are not confident enough to try and make new friends each day!

Is there a Facebook Group to chat to others before we go?

There sure is! We have a whole community of over 1,000 other travellers just like you! It’s a great place to ask questions, share ideas or even upload photos from your travels. Everyone is super welcoming and always ready to help if needed. You can Join the Feel Free Family Here . You will also be invited into a WhatsApp group a week before your tour starts, this is a perfect chance to get chatting with others on the same trip.

Should I do a stopover on route to Australia?

If you’re going to travel thousands of miles across the world you might as well make an even bigger adventure out of it! With Australia being so far away from almost any other country it is very common for travellers to stopover in Asia on their way down under. We often have individuals doing at least a couple of trips in Asia before or after they travel in Australia.

How long do I need to work & travel in Australia?

You can ask this question to 10 different people and get 10 different answers. The simple answer is what's right in front of you. If you have a 1 year working holiday visa planned for Australia...use it ALL! You will only get the chance once and once it’s gone...it’s gone! You can easily cover your bucket list spots in 3-6 months leaving you 6-9 months left for working.

If you plan to do your 2nd year visa we would suggest getting the travel out the way nice and early from Melbourne or Sydney upto Cairns. That way you can do your ‘Farm Work’ up in the sunny state of Queensland!

I want to work in Australia, where do I even start?

Finding work in Australia is actually a lot easier than you might think. Like everything you just need to know where to look, how to go about it and what to expect once you start. Preparation is the secret sauce when looking for work in Australia that’s for sure! The Welcome to Sydney & Welcome to Melbourne starter packages are the best and easiest ways to get started!

How much will I get paid working in Australia?

The idea of living next to the beach in a hot & sunny Australia is already convincing enough to jump on a flight half way across the world. But what if I told you the minimum wage is a whopping AUD $19.50+ per hour, pretty incredible right? With the endless opportunities Australia has to offer coupled with a healthy salary each month...why would you not do a working holiday in Australia?!

Do I need a visa to travel in Australia?

You sure will do! There are a couple of options and we suggest you organise this sooner rather than later!

If you plan on only travelling in Australia then you’ll need a ‘Visitor Visa’.

If you intend on working whilst travelling in Australia then you’ll need a ‘Working Holiday Visa’ (417) or ‘Work and Holiday Visa’ (462), depending on which country you’re from.

You can find out more and apply for your Visa via the Australian Government website . It’s a pretty simple process but as always, slide in the DM’s if you’d like some help and advice.

Cruise to the Great Barrier Reef

Board a high-speed catamaran and cruise the Coral Sea to the Great Barrier Reef, the world’s largest living structure and one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. The International Antarctic Centre

Located in Christchurch, the International Antarctic Centre is one of the best attractions in New Zealand. Set in Sydney’s vibrant Darling Harbour, the Australian National Maritime Museum shares the country’s stories of the sea. You can explore three open vessels including a ship and a submarine, and various exhibitions that document the charting of Australia’s coastline and the sacred meaning of the sea to the Aboriginal Australians.

Museum of Sydney

The Museum of Sydney showcases the colonial and contemporary history of Sydney, though pictures, objects and digital media exhibitions. It was built on the ruins of Australia's first Government House dating back to 1788, and today houses a large display of convict artefacts recovered from over 25 archaeological digs.

Pavlova is made from chewy meringue shell with a soft marshmallow center, and topped with whipped cream and fresh fruits like strawberries, kiwifruit and passionfruit. There’s a rivalry between Australia and New Zealand over the true national origins of the dish, but both countries agree it’s a truly delicious dessert.

Seafood is a national specialty throughout New Zealand, but the best place to enjoy a meal of crayfish is Kaikoura, a seaside town on the South Island. Here, you’ll enjoy the freshest catch of the day, and the crayfish is boiled and served with a tangy dipping sauce.

Found in restaurants all over Australia, the parmigiana is one of the most beloved dishes in the country. It’s made from a breaded chicken breast slathered in tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese, served with french fries and salad. It originated in Italy and was brought to Australia with a wave of Italian migrants.

A unique small group journey into the outback

Odyssey offers a small group tour of Australia providing a journey between cities with just 250 years of European history, and an outback, which has some of the oldest known geologic material on earth. Importantly, it has one of the longest and most truly fascinating periods of human settlement, which we seek to convey through our collection of small group outback tour programs. This collection of outback tours for seniors takes the senior couple or solo traveller on a guided tour through the national park network, into the Flinders range including Wilpena pound, Birdsville, or beyond Broken hill. In the Northern Territory to Watarrka national park and King’s canyon or Tennant creek. Priority is given to sourcing indigenous guide to share their knowledge of outback Australia on these outback tours for seniors.

Indigenous Australians settled, possibly via a land bridge on the continent from Southeast Asia, at least 85,000 years before the first Europeans from Portugal and Spain began exploration in the 17th century. For senior and mature travellers, a small group outback tour of Australia is a unique experience, an outback adventure and an inspiration for the mature traveller interested in a small group journey. You can travel along the Oodnadatta Track , journey over the Nullarbor Plain, visit the Kimberley region or watch the sun set over the Indian Ocean from Broome. On an Odyssey outback tour you have the chance, not just to experience the amazing landscape, but to learn about indigenous culture from indigenous guides and from the physical evidence still available, including rock art in the Bungle Bungle Ranges and the fish traps at Brewarrina .

Australia is a country the size of America, but with a population of just 25 million, and one of the longest coastlines in the World. Some 80% of the population lives on Australia ‘s east coast, separated from what is known as the outback by the low mountains of the Great Dividing Range. Australia ‘s geographic diversity, in landforms, flora, and wildlife, is part of its charm, providing the back drop for a small group outback adventure in the winter period . Whilst the Great Barrier reef, kangaroos and koalas are well known, the great biodiversity of the native Australian wildlife is less well known, and an escorted tour, complete with a local guide into the outback, provides an amazing opportunity. The biodiversity present is often missed until a good tour guide or travel expert shares their knowledge with you. Our small group tours of Australia including any of chosen Australian outback tour or air charter allows you to travel on an epic journey across one of the world’s most beautiful and fascinating countries. Take a journey across the outback and experience a national park such as Purnululu National Park , the Blue Mountains , Kuku Yalanji, the Great Barrier reef and Kata Tjuta. These parks account for some 10% of the World’s biodiversity and on any tour of Australia, travellers can expect to meet unique wildlife, just waiting to be photographed.

Once you leave the major cities of Sydney , Melbourne or Brisbane on a journey by car, or on an escorted tour by coach, the sheer scale of the country begins to reveal itself as the journey unfolds. It is on a scale often unrecognised when flying, for example, to Cairns or Port Douglas from Sydney to explore a UNESCO world heritage site such as the Daintree rainforest or the Great Barrier reef in far North Queensland. You may arrive in Cairns in less than three hours by plane, but on the road, through the outback, this journey for the tour group, becomes an outback adventure, that can run for days. It can become an epic journey, one that requires careful planning and destinations selected well in advance, if you are to arrive safely at your outback destination.

The same rules apply for the journey to Alice Springs and Uluru (Ayers rock ) in the Kata Tjuta National park. From Sydney, or any of the state capitals, this journey has much that will be missed by plane. When you travel as part of a small group tour of Australia with Odyssey, there is so much more to experience. The journey from Sydney to Uluru passes first through another UNESCO world heritage site, the Blue Mountains National Park with its extraordinary gorges and cliff faces, so easily missed unless you know where to look. Farmland and rural towns soon disappear as the drive takes us towards the Northern Territory, then three thousand kilometres away, we finally reach Uluru. This is the Australian outback!

The vast scale of the outback may not be missed on a solo journey by car, but there is so much more to experience than simply distance. When you travel as part of a small group tour of Australia with Odyssey, your programme leader, or your local guide for the day, will be sharing stories with you about the Australian wildlife, local legends or some of world’s most beautiful stories from the dreamtime of the indigenous Australian communities you visit. Aboriginal culture and colonial history both come to life in the sites and country museums we visit, and in the tales related by locals. The Odyssey Australian outback tour seeks to create programs that provide learning as well as enjoyment and adventure as you travel overland, off the beaten track through Central Australia.

Small group tours of Australia for seniors from Odyssey.

Odyssey has, over almost 40 years, put together a collection of Australia packages for air tours , coach tours and motorbike tours within Australia and overseas for the mature solo and senior couple. Our aim is to create Seniors holiday packages that older people from within Australia, and those from overseas, can enjoy. We have created a wide variety of itineraries for local and international travellers with the opportunity to take the journey, often into the Australian outback, that go beyond the icons of the Sydney Opera House or the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Uluru ( Ayers rock ) and the Great Barrier Reef. Our travel programs in Australia for seniors seek to take you off the beaten track on a road trip to explore some less well known, but still spectacular scenery. They are designed for older travellers, couples and those travelling solo. Your fellow traveller understands as does the tour manager leading the group about solo travel. There is a single supplement for solo occupancy of a hotel room. What is important though is that for both couples and the single traveller that you are with a like minded people seeking a similar travel style and experience.

We hope, like Robert Frost, to take the road less travelled. These may not be adventure Australia tours but they are wildlife Australia tours. We provide travel experiences in central Australia that follow the Birdsville track , or take the Canning stock route, camping each night. Another tour explores the Oodnadatta Track and continues into the Flinders Ranges and Brachina Gorge. We have coach tours in Australia that track the stunning scenery of the great Australian Bight or the wildflowers of Western Australia and the extraordinary Kimberley region.

This is a fascinating country and our collection of discovery Australia escorted tour(s) seek to show how its geographical isolation has allowed for an incredible biodiversity record unlike that of any other place on the planet. This can be seen in its unique Australian wildlife, from the the kangaroo, platypus, wombat, quokka, echidna and koala, to its plant diversity, expressed in the wildflowers of Western Australia . Of course not all our tours are wildlife tours, but once our outback tours of Australia leave the built up environment, then there will almost certainly be a wildlife experience at some time on your vacation.

Our group tours for seniors in Western Australia , give the traveller the opportunity to explore and learn about places such as Broome and the beautiful Kimberley coast, Kings Canyon, Kuranda the Bungle Bungle Ranges and Lake Argyll , while developing an understanding of the wet and dry climatic cycle of the Kimberley. The Aborigines have been present here for some 60,000 years in WA and we hope to come to some understanding of Aboriginal history and culture. They developed not only incredible storytelling, to pass on from generation to generation, but had the ability to manage the world’s most arid continent on a sustainable basis. The Aboriginal people also represented their life and understanding of the spirit world through their rock art and painting . We have the opportunity to explore Aboriginal rock art , particularly in the Kimberley region, on these Western Australia tours.

In South Australia , Europeans made their mark in the Flinders ranges, long after geologic processes commenced. Beautiful Wilpena Pound represents the stumps of mountains believed to have once been as tall as the Himalayas. Coober Pedy , with its unusual underground living, yielded opals to miners while other British settlers sought to develop agriculture, train lines and the telegraph through the Flinders ranges. The Oodnadatta track, also in South Australia, provides the traveller with the chance to learn more about both Aboriginal and colonial history.

A traveller with a curiosity and interest in outback Australia and fossils can join an Odyssey program in country New South Wales that ends in far North Queensland in the place where complete Dinosaur skeletons were uncovered by local people some 50 years ago or learn about Australia’s unique Megafauna . Our senior traveller can sit and consider that moment in time, just outside what is Winton today, when a herd of Dinosaurs stampeded through the mud to escape a larger Dinosaur, seeking lunch some 65 Million years ago. On our outback tour we can show you this in the exposed geological record.

What can be discovered in Australia, from the past and the current environment, is simply fascinating once the traveller escapes the cities and ventures into the outback. You can’t really capture the outback spirit from a seat in an aeroplane. You need to get out into the Northern Territory and Western Australia, or at least to drive across the Hay Plain on your way to Lake Mungo . We don’t, however, ignore the cities entirely as major cities, including Sydney , Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide, Canberra, Perth , Darwin & Hobart , where the vast majority of the population lives, each have their contribution to make to an understanding of modern Australia. Our Victorian Gold Rush and Gardens tour begins and ends in Melbourne, there’s a dedicated tour to Adelaide in South Australia or you can take a tour that concentrates on Canberra , the nation’s capital.

Odyssey wants travellers on an Australian small group tour to experience the extraordinary variety that this country has to offer. We want you to be surprised by information that has been recently discovered by Europeans but known to Indigenous Australian for thousands of years. In the outback of Western Australia, for example, just down the road (well only a few hundred kilometres), from the UNESCO World heritage site at the Purunululu National Park (home to the Bungle Bungle rock formation ) is the world’s second largest meteorite impact crater. A meteorite struck this part of the planet some 120,000 years ago at Wolfe Creek. This crater remained unknown to Europeans until it was spotted from the air in 1947, though the local indigenous community had been telling stories of the event for many thousands of years!

For the majority of visitors, they hug the east coast not venturing into the Australian Outback to discover the history of Aboriginal settlement, the river boat traffic down the Murray river or the impact the railway lines brought to regional towns at the begining of the 1900’s. But if you can get beyond Australia’s E ast coast and the G reat Barrier reef particularly in going inland into Queensland then the history is revealed from Winton with the discovery of complete dinosaur skeletons , the town where Waltzing Matilda was first played or where the airline Qantas was the germ of an idea in Longreach, then the stories and history are quickly exposed and become intriguing as they reveal the Australian character. Geography, Environment, & Weather

Australia comprises a land area of about 7.692 million square kilometres.

Although this is just five per cent of the world’s land mass (149.45 million square kilometres), Australia is the planet’s sixth largest country after Russia, Canada, China, the United States of America and Brazil. It is also the only one of the largest six nations that is completely surrounded by water.

Australia is the smallest of the world’s continents. It is also the lowest, the flattest and (apart from Antarctica) the driest.

Due to the size of the country, Australia has serveral different climate zones. The northern section of Australia has a more tropical climate, hot and humid in the summer, and quite warm and dry in the winter, while the southern parts are cooler with mild summers and cool, sometimes rainy winters.

World Heritage Sites

There are 20 properties in Australia listed on the World Heritage List. You can view the listed properties here: (https://whc.unesco.org/en/statesparties/au). Australia listed properties include:

The Great Barrier Reef: a site of remarkable variety and beauty on the north-east coast of Australia. It contains the world’s largest collection of coral reefs, with 400 types of coral, 1,500 species of fish and 4,000 types of mollusc.

Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, formerly called Uluru (Ayers Rock – Mount Olga) National Park, features spectacular geological formations that dominate the vast red sandy plain of central Australia. Uluru, an immense monolith, and Kata Tjuta, the rock domes located west of Uluru, form part of the traditional belief system of one of the oldest human societies in the world. The traditional owners of Uluru-Kata Tjuta are the Anangu Aboriginal people.

Australian Convict Sites, includes a selection of eleven penal sites, among the thousands established by the British Empire on Australian soil in the 18 th and 19 th centuries. The sites are spread across Australia, from Fremantle in Western Australia to Kingston and Arthur’s Vale on Norfolk Island in the east; and from areas around Sydney in New South Wales in the north, to sites located in Tasmania in the south.

Festivals & Events

Whether it’s the adrenaline rush from the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne, a chilled-out break soaking up the music at the Byron Bay Bluesfest or experiencing history and culture at the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair in Queensland, Australia has an event that’s sure to feed your passions.

The Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras festival takes place in February every year with a colourful and happily chaotic street parade.

Australia has no shortage of riveting sports events, like the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race and the Australian Open, it’s no wonder sport-lovers come from all around to experience the adrenaline-inducing atmosphere and world-class athletes.

Eating & Drinking

Australians love their food and this nation is built on a strong history of migration so it’s no wonder that we’ve become famous to the culinary world for our ‘fusion’ food. English and northern European cooking styles have been a part of Australian food since colonisation. Then in the 1970s many Asian cuisines including Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese, Japanese and Indian began to influence the Australian food landscape, as well as the many southern European and Middle Eastern influences such as Spanish, Balkan, Hungarian, Turkish and Lebanese.

Australians are the second largest beer drinkers in the world! Our beer is essentially a cold lager with a strength of around 5 per cent and the list of breweries is endless, including Tooheys, Carlton Draught, Coopers, Boags, Cascade (which is also the oldest that’s still operating), Hahn, James Squire, Victoria Bitter, Emu Export and Little Creatures.

With many great wine regions on the doorsteps of Australia’s largest capital cities, the international reputation of Australian wine has never been greater, currently being the fourth largest exporter of wine worldwide at around 750 million litres per year.

Health & Safety

Generally speaking, Australia is safe to travel in, though always exercise common sense while travelling.

You may wish to read this article on face masks and on being Covid safe when travelling

Electrical Supply

Whenever you travel overseas, it’s always wise to take an appropriate travel adaptor. The electricity supply in Australia runs at 230V and 50Hz. Australia uses the Type I electric plug, so make sure you have the right travel adaptor with you.

Nick had interesting comments and views on his field of expertise. Made me think about some of the things I took for granted.

Participant 2018

I thoroughly enjoyed the whole program!

Nick Mooney is an excellent leader. His knowledge in so many areas is extensive. It became obvious when meeting other local people that he is regarded very highly. As with Trevor, our driver, nothing was too much trouble for him when trying to make our trip memorable. 10 out of 10.

Responsible travel tips for Australia

  • Before departing, make sure you have a number of AU dollars in a range of denominations. You don’t want to be carrying around enormous amounts of cash, but take enough to make it easy to pay in locations that might not accept credit card. It will also help you avoid card transaction fees, and it makes tipping a breeze.
  • Carry a card in your wallet or purse from your local hotel, to assist you with the return journey if you do become lost.
  • Always ensure that you are covered by travel insurance. If you need advice on this feel free to contact Odyssey and we’ll be able to help.

  • When travelling independently, make sure you check the opening hours of shops and museums so that you don’t miss out! Also be certain to check whether your trip coincides with any public holidays, so you can plan accordingly.
  • Before departing on your trip, contact your bank to inform them that you may be making purchases overseas. Otherwise, they may flag any activity on your account as suspicious. Also, check which ATMs and banks are compatible with your cards, to ensure you can withdraw cash with minimal fees.

Australia’s first indoor snow resort announces BridgeClimb group as operators, Trippas White for F&B

Australia’s first indoor snow resort announces BridgeClimb group as operators, Trippas White for F&B

Sydney BridgeClimb operators Hammons Holdings will run and manage the snow attractions at Australia’s first indoor snow resort while hospitality operator Trippas White Group has been chosen to run the food and beverage offerings.

Winter Sports World managing director Peter Magnisalis will announce the selections during a presentation at the NSW Major Projects Conference at the International Convention Centre Sydney today (Thursday).

Currently the largest private tourism construction project in Australia, Winter Sports World is exppected to put Penrith on the global map and accelerate tourism for Western Sydney and NSW.

australia group trips

“To ensure that happens, we need to place this project in the best hands in the world,” Magnisalis said. “After a global search, we have discovered the best tourism attractions and food and beverage operators in the world right here in NSW, and I am confident that Hammons Holdings and Trippas White Group will help drive the success we expect this project to achieve.’’

Hammons Holdings

Hammons Holdings is a third-generation family business and has operated Scenic World since it was established in 1945 and has operated BridgeClimb since 2018.

“Winter Sports World is an exciting one-of-a-kind drawcard for tourism in Western Sydney, the Blue Mountains and more widely, Australia, and will be pivotal to growing the local and NSW tourism economy over the coming decades,” Hammons Holdings CEO David Hammon said.

“Hammons Holdings has been in the business of creating lifelong memories for millions of visitors from all over the world for almost 80 years,” he said.

“We’re thrilled to have been selected as preferred operator to run and manage the snow attractions at Winter Sports World and look forward to doing what we do best – delivering world-class fun and exceptional experiences.”

Trippas White Group

Trippas White Group, established in 1990, is a wholly Australian-owned enterprise, and oversees a diverse portfolio of more than 150 venues nationwide, including the Sydney Opera House, Sydney Tower, Taronga Zoo, Queen Victoria Building, Royal Botanic Garden Sydney, Centennial Parklands, Australian War Memorial, and National Gallery of Australia.

“Our experience managing some of Australia’s most iconic venues has equipped us to deliver unparalleled experiences that cater to locals, domestic and international visitors,” Trippas White Group CEO Kevin Zajax said.

“We are absolutely thrilled to partner with WSW and bring this expertise to Western Sydney – not only creating hundreds of jobs for the hospitality sector, driving tourism to the region as well as being able to celebrate some great local products and offers.”

Dubbed “the giant Esky”, the $500 million-plus Winter Sports World project will inject an additional $222 million annually into the local economy, contributing $2.5 billion in economic growth over the next decade.

Winter Sports World was granted State Significant Development Application approval on January 11, 2024.

It is now undergoing a phase of detailed design and engineering development to prepare for construction, which is on track to begin in 2025 and open in 2028.

Located within the vibrant Riverlink Tourism Precinct at Penrith just 12km from the new Western Sydney International airport, Winter Sports World will be Australia’s first indoor snow resort.

Using real snow, it will include:

  • A 300m advanced open run for experienced skiers and snow boarders, learn to ski runs and a dedicated winter wonderland snow play area;
  • Competition venue for snow sports such as alpine skiing;
  • Ice climbing and crevasse outdoor rock climbing;
  • 4.5-star 170-room hotel, conference and function rooms;
  • Restaurant and cafes with snow views;

WSW will provide a training venue for Olympic sports such as alpine skiing, freestyle skiing and snowboarding.
