ATP announces return of Chinese events for the 2024 season

Novak Djokovic

The 2024 ATP Tour season calendar has been announced, with 63 tournaments set to take place across 29 countries.

The 2024 season will see the calendar adjusted to accommodate the summer Olympics in Paris.

China has been restored to the ATP Tour calendar with the ATP 250 events in Chengdu and Zhuhai kicking off the swing, followed by the ATP 500 China Open in Beijing and culminating with the return of the ninth Masters event in Shanghai.

The ATP have also brought together two Mexican events with Los Cabos moved from July to February as part of changes to make way for the Paris Olympics events.

The Kremlin Cup in Moscow remains suspended from the schedule.

“There are few sports that captivate fans all year round and in so many global markets like tennis. We put everything into creating the best possible experiences for fans as do the players, both on and off the court. From the United Cup in Australia to the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin, it’s going to be another fierce and compelling season on the ATP Tour in 2024.”

“The ATP Tour welcomes more than 4.5 million fans on site and entertains a billion global fans each year. It sees the world’s greatest tennis players compete on the game’s biggest stages, across six continents and an action-packed 11-month season.”

The Sydney leg of the Australian Open season could be in doubt, with the venue yet to be confirmed for the first ATP 250 tournament of the year.

Banja Luka’s 16th week slot in April is currently vacant with a decision expected closer to the time.

There will be a total of five 12-day ATP Masters 1000 tournaments in 2024 at Indian Wells, Miami, Madrid, Rome and Shanghai.

The second edition of the ground-breaking mixed team event the United Cup, will start the season again, and is once again held in partnership with the WTA and Tennis Australia.

Guadenzi hopes that the ATP Tour can continue to attract new fans.

“We have over a billion fans and we under value, under monetise,” Gaudenzi said in a discussion regarding ATP’s vision for the sport.

“Tennis has a huge competitive advantage because we are global.

He would add: “We have a very strong men’s and women’s product and I think we are in a very, very good position to attract a new generation.”

ATP hails ‘new era’ for Chinese tennis at Shanghai Masters launch

atp tour in china

SHANGHAI – Executives from the ATP hailed a “new era” for Chinese tennis as they relaunched the lucrative Shanghai Masters on Monday after three consecutive years of Covid-19 cancellations.

The flagship event of the men’s game in the Asia-Pacific region was among many international sporting fixtures stopped by Beijing’s strict zero-Covid measures.

But international sports bodies have sought to bring back such events since those restrictions were lifted in December.

“The ATP Tour’s return to China in 2023 is a significant moment for tennis,” ATP chief executive officer Massimo Calvelli said at the launch ceremony.

“We are very confident this is the moment we will start a new journey... for tennis in China.

“We’re excited to reconnect with our Chinese fans this season and to continue building on our sport’s success in the region.”

Michael Luevano, tournament director of the Shanghai Masters, added: “The Rolex Shanghai Masters opened the door to the growth and development of world tennis in China and we are very proud of our achievements.

“We are the first and only tournament in Asia to be staged over two weeks.

“It will provide players with more jobs, provide fans with more thrilling tennis from some of the most exciting and dynamic athletes in the world, and continue to be the spearhead for tennis in Asia.

“The Shanghai Masters is ready to shine and ready to return, and host the world’s best tennis players.

“We will continue to be the benchmark for world tennis in Asia.”

Elite women’s tennis is also returning to China, after the WTA in March abandoned a boycott it had imposed over concerns for the safety of Chinese player Peng Shuai.

Peng, a former doubles world No. 1, has not been seen outside China since 2021, when she made – and then withdrew – accusations of sexual assault against a high-ranking official – former Chinese vice-premier Zhang Gaoli.

The WTA had previously said it would not return to China without a formal investigation into the allegations and an opportunity to meet privately with Peng.

Calvelli, when asked why the men’s game had not joined the boycott, said the ATP had made “different considerations”. “For me, the important part is the WTA is coming back, which is the right thing for the sport,” he said.

He also pointed to the success of Chinese players as another reason it was a “special time to come back”.

Wu Yibing beat John Isner of the United States at the Dallas Open in February to become the first Chinese player to lift an ATP Tour trophy.

Zhang Zhizhen then became the first Chinese player to reach the quarter-finals of an ATP Masters 1000 event when he beat American Taylor Fritz at the Madrid Open last week.

October’s Shanghai Masters will double its duration and the prize-money pool will exceed US$10 million (S$13.3 million), making it the richest sports event in Asia, the ATP added on Monday.

The event is also the last of four ATP Tour events in China scheduled in 2023.

Former world No. 1 Daniil Medvedev will headline the Zhuhai Championships from Sept 20-26, which will run concurrently with another tournament in Chengdu.

The China Open will then begin in Beijing in late September, leading into the Shanghai Masters.

Several other major international sports events will also be held in China in 2023.

Badminton’s Sudirman Cup begins on Sunday while the Asian Games kick off in Hangzhou in September.

Major snooker and golf tournaments are also planned. AFP

Yibing Wu becomes first Chinese player to win an ATP Tour title

  • Associated Press

DALLAS -- Yibing Wu became the first Chinese player to win an ATP Tour title, rallying in a three-set, all-tiebreaker thriller to beat John Isner in the Dallas Open on Sunday.

Wu overcame 44 aces from the big-serving Isner -- one shy of tying a three-set record -- and four match points in the 6-7 (4), 7-6 (3), 7-6 (12) victory. The 23-year-old was the first Chinese player in an ATP final.

Wu also came back from a set down to beat top-seeded American Taylor Fritz in the semifinals. There were no service breaks in Wu's victory over the fifth-seeded Isner, who was playing in his hometown tournament.

"It's not only about winning the title, I think it's more about me personally making history and also for the country," said Wu, who was the first Chinese man to reach the third round of the US Open when he did it as a qualifier last year.

"That's huge for the next generation," Wu said. "For me, I need to keep going, keep my body healthy. I'm sure there's more to come."

Leading 8-7 in the third-set tiebreaker, Isner came to the net for an easy volley that hit the top of the net and stayed on Isner's side. The 6-foot-10 American sensed the opportunity lost, sitting for a few moments and fiddling with the strings on his racket.

Wu saved another match point at 10-9 and had four match points of his own in the final tiebreaker before finally converting on Isner's serve when Isner sent a forehand long off Wu's return.

Wu fell on his back in disbelief, staying down long enough for Isner to come across the net to congratulate him.

It was the first tiebreaker in a decisive set in Wu's career, who climbed into the top 60 of the rankings for the first time.

Battling injuries that kept him out for most of 2019-20 before the pandemic sidelined him even longer, Wu was No. 1,121 a year ago.

"I've been through a lot of things," Wu said. "I think the reason now I'm relaxed on tennis courts is I trust myself. If you want to beat me, you have to work hard."

Since his return, Wu has a 50-10 match record and had won three ATP Challenger titles before his Dallas breakthrough.

Isner was trying for his 17th career title in his 31st final. He made the semifinals in the inaugural Dallas Open last year before losing to eventual champion Reilly Opelka in the semifinals.
