Angels Costume Tour

The Angels Costume Tour will take you on a two hour journey behind the scenes of the world’s foremost provider of costumes to the entertainment industry.   Since Angels was first established in 1840, they have supplied costumes for West End productions, the world famous Madame Tussauds, as well as numerous TV and Film productions over the years.

The production of these costumes is based in North London, and Angels now offer you the chance to explore their warehouse, which is packed full of iconic costumes from the world of film, TV, and theatre – a dream for any fashion or film fan. Your guide will lead you around the site taking you through each individual department and the processes that help take costume ideas from design to reality.

As you walk through departments including Tailoring, Ladies Making, Alterations, Uniform, the Badge Room, Armoury, and the Warehouse, you’ll see literally thousands of costumes, across more than eight miles of rails.

Since Angels was first established in 1840, they have been at the centre of the entertainment industry right up to the present day. You’ll hear first-hand accounts of working on recent productions such as Harry Potter, The Crown, Downton Abbey, Wicked, and Game of Thrones. Plus, you’ll see clothes made or recreated for Benedict Cumberbatch, Judi Dench, Fred Astaire, Johnny Depp, Cate Blanchett, and many more.

Who knows, you may even get a glimpse of a famous actor being fitted for a costume. Group sizes are limited to a max of 15 persons.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

• For the Angels Costume Tour, taking photographs for personal use is permitted.  However, filming video footage of any kind is not permitted. Also as there are stairs as part of the tour the tour is not wheelchair accessible.
• Any guests must show proof of a lateral flow test when arriving (due to insurance and contracts with their film and TV customers). Also face masks must be worn whilst inside the building

Private and Bespoke Tours Private tours are available on other days however additional security are required at the weekend and is reflected in the price of the tour. If you wish to see a particular costume from a production, there is an additional charge of £60 per costume to arrange this.

What happens on the tour.

On the day, you will be guided around all of Angels Costumes departments. You'll learn about the heritage of the business, see how costumes are made and journey through over 8.5 miles of hanging costumes. We recommend comfortable shoes as you will be on your feet throughout.

How long does the tour last?

The tour lasts approximately two hours.

How many people can go on the tour?

Spaces are limited to 15 people per tour.

Can I take photos or videos?

Photography and videos are only permitted in two areas. These will be highlighted to you during the tour.

How do I get to Angels Costumes?

By car, use the postcode NW9 6AA. Please park in the Angels Costumes car park, not Angels Fancy Dress.

By train, Angels Costumes is a five minute walk from Hendon train station. Turn right out of the station along the A504, then right again down Wilberforce Road. Walk to the end of the road and Angels Costumes is opposite.

Is the tour family-friendly?

Since the tour takes place in a working, multi-level environment, it is not suitable for children under the age of fourteen.

Is the tour wheelchair-friendly?

Wheelchair users are welcome. Please let us know in advance if you or a member of your group is a wheelchair user.

I'd like to see a specific costume, can this be arranged?

This can usually be arranged although we may charge for special requests. Please let us know in advance if you want to see something specific.

I'd like to go on the tour for research purposes, is this okay?

The history of angels costumes.

In 1813 Daniel Angel, a young tailor from Frankfurt arrived in London with barely a word of English. He headed for Seven Dials and set up a barrow selling second hand clothes. He later opened a second hand clothing shop with his son Morris providing a service for those who wanted good quality clothes at reasonable cost. Later, when an actor asked if he could rent a suit rather than buy it, the hire business took off.

Morris and his son Daniel (3rd generation) moved to premises on Shaftesbury Avenue in the late 1880’s and Daniel opened a bespoke department in this new respectable environment. The quality and style of the clothes was high, and soon theatrical managers were seeking his services for their West End productions.

As the film industry was beginning, Angels began a relationship with the film industry that lasts to this day, making the costumes for the film Maid of the Mountains (1913). The Shaftesbury Avenue location ensured that Angels dressed every show of distinction in the West End, including musicals Showboat, The Girl Friend, The Co-optimists, The Year of Grace, No, No Nanette, and plays such as Journey’s End, and The Truth Game.

In the late 1920s, after Madame Tussauds was destroyed by fire, Angels re-dressed all the waxworks and provided uniforms and livery for the staff. From 1940 to 1945, Angels provided dress uniforms for the Free French Army and for ENSA, the army entertainment troupe.

In 1948 Hamlet starring Laurence Olivier won the Best Achievement in Costume Design Oscar® at the Academy Awards. Angels have gone on to supply costume to another 35 Best Costume Oscar® winners. In 2015 Angels supplied costumes to four of the five films nominated for Oscars® in Costume Design and all five films nominated for the Film Costume Design at BAFTA: The Grand Budapest Hotel; The Imitation Game, Into The Woods, Mr Turner, The Theory of Everything and Maleficent.

Angels acquired Bermans in 1992, moving the professional hire for film, TV and theatre to Camden. This allowed the original Shaftesbury Avenue premises to be opened as Angels Fancy Dress; giving over almost one acre of storage space to public fancy dress hire.

In 2002 Angels moved the film and TV stock to a 160,000 sq.ft. purpose-built facility in Hendon. The building provides an incredible working environment, encompassing costume rental, line-up, costume making facilities, preparation areas and a suite of 15 designer offices and over 8 miles of costume rails.

Dakota Johnson braved a potential wardrobe malfunction Wednesday night during an appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” when one of her dress straps snapped in the middle of her interview.

“Your dress just came unhooked,” Kimmel said, and, ever the gentleman, offered her tape to hold the pieces of her black Bottega Veneta gown together.

After the shows in London, Swift will travel to Dublin, Ireland, where she will perform for three nights starting June 28. After her Ireland stop, Swift will play in Amsterdam starting on July 4, with stops in Switzerland, Germany, and Italy afterward.

Swift will return to London’s Wembley Stadium on August 15 to play five more nights. The singer will return stateside on October 18, playing three consecutive nights at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida.
