Sacha Baron Cohen in 'Ali G Indahouse'

Sacha Baron Cohen is dusting off his beloved character Ali G , Deadline has confirmed.

Cohen’s reprisal of one of his most famous satirical characters will come not via any new film or TV project in development, but rather as part of a stand-up tour that he’s been planning. More concrete details as to how Ali G will figure into his routine, or with regard to tour dates, haven’t yet been disclosed.

Cohen again reprised the Ali G persona in the 2002 feature Ali G Indahouse , officially retiring the character in 2007, though he has been seen since then on special occasions, as at the 2012 British Comedy Awards and a hush-hush stand-up show put on in Sydney, Australia in 2021.

The latest on Ali G was first reported by Variety.

Sacha Baron Cohen is bringing back Ali G , the controversial character with whom he first shot to fame in the late 1990s.

Variety understands Baron Cohen has been working on a stand-up tour in which Ali G will make an appearance. Popular on Variety

In the early 2000s Baron Cohen developed a standalone series called “Da Ali G Show” which saw him return as the eponymous character as well as introduce two new faux journalists: Borat, a Kazakh reporter apparently unfamiliar with the West, and Austrian fashionista Bruno.

The series ran for three seasons, with the latter two being picked up HBO in the U.S., and all three characters went on to have their own spin-off movies, including “Ali G Indahouse,” “Bruno” and “Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan.”

In 2020, Borat was resurrected for a second feature, “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm: Delivery of Prodigious Bribe to American Regime for Make Benefit Once Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan.”

Sacha Baron Cohen to revive Ali G for stand-up tour

Friday 11th August 2023, 8:49am

  • Ali G will appear on stage as part of a new live show being developed by Sacha Baron Cohen , according to a report

Sacha Baron Cohen is reportedly working on a stand-up tour in which his character Ali G will make an appearance.

Variety reports that the comedy star is bringing back the controversial character as part of a series of planned live shows. However, there are no further details at this stage as to the title, content, timing or location of these shows.

Sacha Baron Cohen first appeared as the yellow-suited rapper 25 years ago, in a sketch for The 11 O'Clock Show . The character later got his own TV show, a series which also introduced his journalist characters Borat and Brüno to viewers.

The spin-off movies - Ali G Indahouse ( 2002 ), Borat: Cultural Learnings Of America For Make Benefit Glorious Nation Of Kazakhstan ( 2006 ), Brüno ( 2009 ) and Borat Subsequent Moviefilm ( 2020 ) - have since made the characters famous around the world.

Sacha Baron Cohen has appeared as Ali G a number of times since the movie 2002 movie, including at the 2012 British Comedy Awards and the 2015 Oscars. The Staines-based rapper last popped up in 2021 , during an un-billed gig at The Comedy Store in Sydney. He said at the time: "I just wanted to get on stage and muck around and see what Ali G would be like with a crowd. It was really good fun."

Asked by GQ magazine if he would appear live as the character again, he said: "Yes, I think I would. Because the reason I became a comedian was that I loved people laughing at my jokes. To actually hear laughter is a rare thing for me. When I do the movies, I think it is funny, but I have to wait three months to hear an audience laugh."

However, whilst Sacha Baron Cohen may be planning live dates, he currently has no plans for Ali G to appear in another film. A "source close to Baron Cohen" strenuously denied to Variety that any new movie plans were in development, citing that the writer and actor is strictly abiding by the Screen Actors Guild and Writers Guild of America rules as the organisations continue to strike. "As a SAG and WGA member he is supporting the ongoing strike alongside his fellow writers and actors."

Sacha Baron Cohen to Revive Ali G for New Stand-Up Tour: Report

To coincide with the character's 25th anniversary

Sacha Baron Cohen to Revive Ali G for New Stand-Up Tour: Report

Sacha Baron Cohen is set to revive his famous character Ali G, who brought him into the spotlight during the late 1990s.

Per  Variety , Baron Cohen is currently working on a stand-up tour that will feature Ali G’s return, just in time for the 25th anniversary of the character’s debut. Baron Cohen initially portrayed Ali G in 1998 as part of a sketch series named The 11 O’Clock Show , through which the character gained immense popularity conducting satirical interviews of unaware public figures.

Ali G, who leads a crew of fellow wannabe gangsters, is distinguished by his rude boy-style accent and streetwear. Some have accused the character of perpetuating Black stereotypes, though Baron Cohen maintains that he’s a parody of the privileged suburban white youth who appropriate Black culture in England.

During the early 2000s, Baron Cohen leaned more into Ali G with a standalone series called Da Ali G Show , in which he reprised the character and introduced two new fictional journalists: Borat, a Kazakh reporter seemingly unfamiliar with Western culture, and Bruno, an Austrian fashion enthusiast.

Da Ali G Show had a successful three-season run, with HBO picking up the latter two for the US. All three characters later got their own spin-off movies, such as Ali G Indahouse , Bruno , Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan,  and Borat Subsequent Moviefilm: Delivery of Prodigious Bribe to American Regime for Make Benefit Once Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan.  But don’t expect another movie with Ali G anytime soon, as Baron Cohen is abiding by the terms of the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strikes .

Last December, Baron Cohen also revived Borat to perform a brilliant roast  at the 2022 Kennedy Center Honors.

Cohen first appeared as Ali G on Channel 4 ‘s The 11 O’Clock Show in the late 90s. On the show, he interviewed a number of international figures while in character as a over-the-top British rapper from the town Staines-upon-Thames.

In 2000, Cohen starred as the character on his own Da Ali G Show , the first season of which originally aired on Channel 4 in the UK. It was later picked up by HBO in the United States where it aired its second and third seasons.

Cohen brought the character to the big screen in 2002 with the film Ali G Indahouse , which was directed by Mark Mylod .

Sacha Baron Cohen is reportedly set to revive his iconic character Ali G 25 years after he first debuted on Channel 4.

According to Variety , the English comedian is believed to be working on a tour incorporating the Staines -based rapper, who first appeared in 1998 and made him a household name.

Ali G landed his own film in 2002, but there are currently no plans to see him back on the big screen due to ongoing writer and actor strikes in the US which has seen Hollywood brought to its knees over the last couple of months.

A source told Variety: “As a SAG and WGA member he is supporting the ongoing strike alongside his fellow writers and actors”.

Baron Cohen, who is married to actress Isla Fisher, is yet to announce how he will incorporate Ali G, with no tour dates revealed either.

Ali G made his on-screen debut in 1998 on Channel 4’s The 11 O’Clock Show, when he would interview prominent public figures in the UK.

The novel interactions made the character a household name, before heading Da Ali G Show from 2000 with a full-length film titled Ali G Indahouse following in 2002.

The Cambridge-educated star decided to retire the character in 2007 as he became more recognisable, restricting the effectiveness of his antics.

Baron Cohen last donned Ali G’s infamous yellow tracksuit in 2021 for a surprise gig in Sydney, Australia.

Speaking to British GQ at the time, he said: “I just wanted to get on stage and muck around and see what Ali G would be like with a crowd. It was really good fun. The reason I became a comedian was that I loved people laughing at my jokes.

Last month, Alf Lawrie, the head of factual entertainment at Channel 4, said a show like Ali G or Baron Cohen’s other creation Borat, would never have been made today.

He said: “You can’t make Ali G, Borat or Brass Eye now because the rules have changed. You can’t hoodwink people on the same grand scale. TV has become a slightly more regulated environment than it was 20 years ago.

“When you were making Borat 20 years ago, you could pretend quite seriously that he was from Kazakhstan and until it aired people had no idea otherwise. These days you can’t mislead in the same way...

“We’re far more respectful of our contributors now than we used to be. But it means the nature of some satire has changed.”

The Standard has contacted a representative for Sacha Baron Cohen for comment.

Sacha Baron Cohen Ali G

Sacha Baron Cohen Is Reportedly Planning To Bring Ali G Back For A Stand-Up Tour

Mike Redmond

Sacha Baron Cohen might be dusting off one of his classic characters. While the comedian is best known for his portrayal of Borat , who now has two movies under his belt, Cohen looks to be going back to his roots by bringing back Ali G , the character that started it all.

According to Variety , Cohen is reportedly developing a stand-up tour featuring Ali G, whose absurd interviews put the actor on the map. Ali G originally appeared in the late ’90s on the British TV sketch series, “The 11 O’Clock Show” before making the jump to HBO where Ali G became a breakout hit with American audiences in the early-to-mid 2000s.

However, a source close to Cohen made it a point to “strenuously deny” that a new Ali G movie was in the works and that Cohen is “strictly abiding” by strike rules. “As a SAG and WGA member he is supporting the ongoing strike alongside his fellow writers and actors,” the source told Variety .

While Cohen has focused mainly on Borat, Ali G has reemerged a handful of times. The actor famously surprised audiences with the character at the 2016 Oscars thanks to the help of wife Isla Fisher. More recently, Cohen dropped a secret Ali G set at The Comedy Store in Sydney in 2021 where he may have been laying the groundwork for the pending stand-up tour.

“I just wanted to get on stage and muck around and see what Ali G would be like with a crowd,” Cohen said after the performance. “It was really good fun.”

Sacha Baron Cohen Announces Ali G Stand-Up Tour

ali g stand up tour tickets

Sacha Baron Cohen is gearing up for an Ali G stand-up tour, bringing back the iconic character to the stage.

A man in a yellow jacket sitting on a gold throne.

The Return of Ali G

The creative force behind Ali G, Sacha Baron Cohen, is getting ready to don the flamboyant shell suit once again and hit the road with an exciting live stand-up tour. This comes 25 years after Ali G first burst onto the scene on Channel 4’s The 11 O’Clock Show.

The news first broke from Variety, a well-known US showbiz outlet. While the details of the tour – where it will take place, what the format will be, and when it’s happening – are still a mystery, fans are buzzing with anticipation.

Sacha Baron Cohen decided to shelve the Ali G persona back in 2007, citing his growing fame as the reason. He humorously noted that even the Queen Mother had perfected her own Ali G impression. However, Ali G has made sporadic appearances over the years, like when Baron Cohen appeared in character to accept the outstanding achievement award at the British Comedy Awards in 2012.

A man in an orange outfit sitting on a couch.

A particularly memorable moment was the surprise appearance of Ali G at the 2015 Oscars. Baron Cohen and his wife, actress Isla Fisher, managed to secretly transform into the character during a 40-minute stint locked in a bathroom – all while claiming to be dealing with food poisoning.

Behind-the-Scenes: The Sydney Gig

This recent announcement comes just two years after a low-key performance by the character at The Comedy Store in Sydney. Reflecting on that experience, Baron Cohen shared, “I was eager to step onto the stage, toy around, and see how Ali G’s humour connected with a live audience. It turned out to be a lot of fun.”

When asked by GQ magazine if he’d consider more performances, Baron Cohen responded enthusiastically, saying, “Absolutely, I think I would. The heart of my journey as a comedian was always about making people laugh.”

Baron Cohen’s post-Ali G ventures, including the audacious Kazakh journalist Borat and the flamboyant fashion commentator Bruno, have only further solidified his reputation as a comedic genius.

Addressing rumours in an interview with GQ that Ali G had returned at The Comedy Store in Sydney, Baron Cohen said: “Yes. I just wanted to get on stage and muck around and see what Ali G would be like with a crowd. It was really good fun.”

Asked whether he would play the character again in this context, he replied: “Yes, I think I would.”

“Because the reason I became a comedian was that I loved people laughing at my jokes,” he went on, describing the benefits of stand-up. “To actually hear laughter is a rare thing for me. When I do the movies, I think it is funny, but I have to wait three months to hear an audience laugh.”

Earlier this year, BritBox confirmed Baron Cohen’s  Da Ali G Show would air on the platform with a warning about “racist terms”.

When watching the series, viewers will now see a warning that episodes contain “crude humour, including racist terms which may offend, sexual references and strong language”.

In Sacha Baron Cohen’s satirical series, which ran on Channel 4 from 2000 to 2004, characters including Kazakh journalist Borat and gay Austrian fashion aficionado Bruno are introduced, alongside Ali G.

Ali G, who is intended to be a white or Asian man adopting the vocabulary of Black street culture, was accused of being racist when the show was first released.

Sacha Baron Cohen is reviving Ali G for a new stand-up tour

Ali G celebrates his 25th anniversary this year

Georgina Pellant

Sacha Baron Cohen is reportedly reviving Ali G for a new stand-up tour as the satirical character celebrates its 25th anniversary.

According to reports in Variety , the English actor and comedian is planning to bring back his iconic 1990s tracksuit-wearing character for a new one-hour stand-up special.

The publication said that Cohen had been working on a new stand-up tour and that the character was set to make a reappearance.

First appearing on Channel 4’s The 11 O’Clock Show in the late ’90s, Ali G helped to catapult Sacha Baron Cohen to fame at the start of his career.

The character, who styles himself as a Staines Junglist, speaks in a West Indian patois and generally acts like a spoof of a hip-hop pretender, was such a hit he eventually got his own standalone series called The Ali G Show , which ran for three seasons.

Variety also addressed rumours of a new film, with a source close to Cohen strenuously denying a movie was in the works and saying Cohen was abiding by strike rules.

“As a SAG and WGA member he is supporting the ongoing strike alongside his fellow writers and actors,” the source told the publication.

If Ali G makes a comeback it will not be the first time Cohen has resurrected the character, bringing him out on stage at a gig in Australia.

“I just wanted to get on stage and muck around and see what Ali G would be like with a crowd,” Cohen said at the time. “It was really good fun.”

Ali G first appeared on our screens in 1998, with the character making its debut on Channel 4 ‘s sketch series The 11 O’Clock Show as the “voice of da yoof”.

The faux-streetwise poser became known for conducting interviews with people who didn’t realise they were being set up, bragged about coming up “in da heart of da Staines ghetto” and leading a local street gang, “Da West Staines Massiv.”

The BBC has announced that one of its best-loved sitcoms is returning for a one-off special this Christmas.

That’s right… The Brockmans are back.

Eight years since it graced our TV screens with its last Christmas special back in 2016, it’s just been announced that the award-winning comedy series, Outnumbered , is back for more this festive season, with a one-off special episode written and directed by the show’s original creators, Guy Jenkin and Andy Hamilton.

In case you’re unfamiliar with the BBC show, or never got the chance to tune in when it originally aired, Outnumbered ran for five series between 2007 to 2014, and became massively-popular thanks to being both a scripted programme but with scenes featuring the children being semi-improvised.

All the stars of the original much-loved series are returning for the new Christmas special – including Hugh Dennis as dad Pete, Claire Skinner as mum Sue, Tyger Drew-Honey as eldest son Jake, Daniel Roche as middle child Ben, and Ramona Marquez as the youngest daughter, Karen.

Just as fans of the show have come to know, expect, and ultimately, love, the broadcaster says this new Christmas special will follow the chaos in the downsized home of Pete and Sue Brockman, as they grapple with the challenges of parenting kids who are now adults with their own lives to lead.

In a moment of adversity, Sue and Pete gather all their offspring to try and celebrate a traditional family Christmas, but fate, neighbours, hyenas, and bus replacement services get in their way.

Ahead of the Brockmans’ return later this year, co-creator, writer, and director, Andy Hamilton, commented: “It’s a very exciting prospect to be revisiting the Brockman family – older, but not necessarily wiser – as they steer a path through the perils of Christmas and the rapids of modern-day family life.”

Star Hugh Dennis says he “can’t wait” for the Brockmans to be “back together again.”

Claire Skinner also shares her fellow co-star’s view, adding: “I’m really looking forward to being reunited with my TV family, as working on this wonderful BBC comedy doesn’t feel like work and is one of the greatest joys for us all.”

You can take your little Mancs down to meet the star of one of their favourite TV shows at the Science and Industry Museum this weekend.

In case you hadn’t heard, May is currently ‘Brilliant Bodies’ month down at Manchester ‘s iconic  Science and Industry Museum , and there’s a whole host of themed interactive and educational activities lined up ready for schools across Greater Manchester to be out for half term – with something for everyone of all ages to get stuck into.

Anatomy-themed special events , star-studded appearances, and  half term  transformations are just some of the things on the “gloriously gross” schedule.

But, of course, one of the highlights of ‘Brilliant Bodies’ month has to be the world-first exhibition  Operation Ouch! Food, Poo and You at the heart of it all – which is based off the popular children’s  BBC  show of the same name.

The  family-friendly  exhibition – which is coming to a close after a massively-successful run in our city on Sunday 9 June – gives visitors the chance understand more about the inner workings of their own bodies, and the important role science plays in supporting our digestive health.

If you haven’t had the chance to check out the exhibition yet , and are keen to do so before it bids its final farewell, then this bank holiday weekend couldn’t be a more ideal time, as one of the stars of the Operation Ouch! TV show, Dr Ronx, is making a special visit to the museum on Saturday.

And this is your chance to meet them.

Anyone who books tickets to visit  Operation Ouch! Food, Poo and You  between 11:30am-1pm, and 3pm-4pm, on Saturday 25 May, will not only have the chance to explore the role of each organ in the digestive system during a “rib-tickling adventure”, but will also get the opportunity to grab a selfie with Dr Ronx from inside the exhibition.

Visitors will be guided through the exhibition by videos and illustrations of  Operation Ouch!  hosts, Dr Chris, Dr Xand, and Dr Ronx, all before getting to meet Dr Ronx themself.

Dr Ronx will also be hosting three Q&A sessions throughout the day too, and you can see them take to the stage at 10:30am, 2:10pm, and 4:30pm.

Tickets to visit the museum and exhibition on Saturday 25 May are now available to book.

Free standard museum entry tickets will give you access to the Q&As with Dr Ronx, but an exhibition ticket must be purchased for specific times for the photo opportunity, and these are limited, so booking as soon as possible is encouraged to avoid disappointment.
