Alex G at the echo last night was amazing. I was literally counting the seconds for this show and was so excited when he was announced to perform right after Your Friend, and Porches. (Whom also put on a bad ass set!!)

My friend Natalie and I made our way through the crowd as he began to set up. We decided to chill over by the sitting area near the bar. And then it happened... Noise was heard.

It was like taking my first tab of acid. There was a sense of euphoria I got from the way we all sinked right in to his songs. There he stood changing from pink to blue to green again under the lights that seemed to go perfectly with how he was singing and the trippy psychedelic visuals provided by the tech dudes. There was so much emotion in the way he was screaming and singing into the mic. I was convinced he was the reincarnation of Kurt Cobain himself. His antics, the meaning in the lyrics... Alex G had taken us on a trip to the past. An experience so real but unreal. Definitely gonna see this dude again. Los Angeles is thrilled.

I saw Alex Giannascoli and his band play to an attentive audience in a small basement. The band were tight, but not so much that it became a predictable playback of what his records sound like. The band play off of each other and inject a lot of energy, creativity and humour into their performance.

The set started out with selections from his latest release "DSU". They meandered into choices from his previous release "Trick", including "Animals" where Alex punctuates the vocals with screamo-style wails and garners a lone crowd-surfer over the otherwise quietly nodding audience.

Later on in the set, Alex takes a few requests from the audience and then ends with two unexpected covers. They play "Linger" by the Cranberries (featuring support act Girlpool on vocals) and then nearly talk themselves out of playing "Semi-Charmed Life" by Third Eye Blind. However, the drummer steels their resolve by exclaiming that it is "totally a party song", and they soldier through every verse with ease.

A+++ would gig again.

sounded great, beyond entertaining, alex g's stomping around could bring a smile even to the biggest grouch, definitely recommend that anyone & everyone see these young men perform, also alex chilled behind the merch counter while cardboard swords and title fight played, what a dope man

great show! i’ve been seeing alex g live since 2014 and he never disappoints! i do miss when he played at cats cradle as opposed to motorco (both in nc near the raleigh area) i felt the venue was much more fitting and overall better. keep up the good shit!

Amazing show. Alex G and the band (as well as the opening act World Brain) were so great to finally hear live. The venue was also really nice with cheap beer and a cozy atmosphere. The only negative I can think of was that there was smoking indoors.

Alex G's performance was cool and energetic! I enjoyed a lot! (so were the people standing next to me dancing all night...)

And I like some of the guitar chords of the songs, they sound interesting~

Alex G Releases The Kaleidoscopic Song ‘Blessing’ And Announces North American Tour Dates

Danielle Chelosky

Indie eccentric Alex G is back with new music to follow his We’re All Going To The World’s Fair film score that arrived last month. Tracks like “ End Song ” and “ Main Theme ” were simultaneously cinematic and in tune with his usual eerie sound. Today, he’s back with a new song called “Blessing,” and as haunting as it is, it’s not for a horror movie this time.

The static-filled, kaleidoscopic track is propelled forward by a collage of whispered voices that are like mirages, discordant guitar chords, and colorful synths. The homemade-appearing music video only contributes to the sense of disorientation.

Along with this track, he has also announced tour dates for this fall, including openers Hatchie, Barrie, and Sadurn at select dates. Check out the full tour below and listen to “Blessing” above.

Alex G Announces North American Tour, Shares New Song “Blessing”: Stream

The post Alex G Announces North American Tour, Shares New Song “Blessing”: Stream appeared first on Consequence .

Alex G  is entering a wild new era with “Blessing,” a new single that sounds like little else in his recent discography. Wherever he’s headed musically, he’ll be taking this sound on the road in October and November with a newly-announced North American headlining tour.

The formerly (Sandy) songwriter’s last proper album was 2019’s  House of Sugar ,  though just a month ago he shared his moody soundtrack to the new movie We’re All Going to the World’s Fair . In comparison, “Blessing” is dripping with swagger; Alex G opens the track with a wall of distortion that gives way to marching drums and a strutting guitar riff. The lyrics are delivered in a call-and-response whisper, with Alex G beginning with the words, “Every day,” and waiting for the words “Every day” to be echoed back to him before continuing, “Is a blessing.”

“So, I was up pretty early one morning because I couldn’t sleep and I started playing guitar and wrote this song really quickly,” Alex G said in an interview with Apple Music’s Hanuman Welch. “I guess something special about it is… once I demo’d it out and showed it to my band we all recorded it together at this studio in upstate New York. We had never done that before. Everything at once in the room together. The song is chopped up. The instrumentals were all done live, which is kinda unique I guess. To be honest, I wrote it so quick. Maybe lack of sleep helped write it.”

The track comes with a music video directed by Zev Magasis. It shows the songwriter in sunglasses and a black goatee, wearing his hair in spiked tips like a personification of 1997.

Check out “Blessing” below, and catch it live on his upcoming tour. As previously announced, Alex G will be opening in June for Bright Eyes, while his headlining trek in October and November will be supported by Barrie, Hatchie, and Sadurn. The 29-date jaunt includes an appearance at When We Were Young Festival  and multi-night stands in Chicago, Boston, Brooklyn, and Philadelphia. Ticket pre-sale runs Tuesday through Thursday, with general on-sale beginning Friday at 10:00 a.m. local time. Book your seat here , and scroll onward for the full tour itinerary.

Chappell Roan captivates campy audience during ‘Midwest Princess’ Cleveland tour stop

C LEVELAND, Ohio — Chappell Roan celebrated Midwest flare during the Cleveland stop of her worldwide tour on Tuesday night and proved she’s the future of pop music with a sold-out show.

The glam-pop singer took the concept of “camp” to the next level with her performance at Jacobs Pavilion. The crowd knew to show up in style. Roan makes a dress “theme” for each show loosely based on a song or concept from her debut album “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess.”

Local fans were given the Midwest Princess Theme, resulting in plenty of camo and country vibes. Unsurprisingly, Cleveland understood the assignment.

Instead of a traditional opening band, Roan employs a few local drag performers to kick off the show. Monica Mod, Kimpiid and Lady Inferno Diamond set the mood with high-energy performances to songs by Britney Spears, Charli XCX and more. Roan was overwhelmingly encouraging the audience to tip their queens, with many fans raising their hand to signify it was their first time seeing drag performances in person.

The crowd came in their best Chappell Roan-inspired looks ready to belt their hearts out to every song. Aside from the visual energy her presence brought to the show, the raw talent in her voice was truly the most mesmerizing aspect.

Roan belted through some of her high-energy tracks like “Red Wine Supernova” and “Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl” to a crowd that knew every word. She made the massive stage seem small, truly marking her ability to captivate the audience.

There was a sea of fans doing Roan’s kitschy YMCA-inspired dance to “HOT TO GO!” or putting up their phone flashlights on command. In a world where Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour has encouraged people to embrace their fan-girl obsessions, it seems like Roan’s fanbase intrinsically could take it to the next level.

It cannot go unsaid that Roan attracted a crowd of women, LGBTQ+ folks and people in other marginalized groups ready to dance their hearts out to her ultra-personal songs. Despite the full house, it was hard to not feel like you were in an overwhelmingly inclusive and positive space regardless of your seats. Any artist able to unite people over the sheer power of their songs feels like something worth celebrating in 2024, and Roan might be doing it best.

The rendition of her latest track, “Good Luck, Babe!”, epitomizes Roan’s artistry. The song is about a closeted woman who ends up marrying a man and feeling disappointed in her life. Despite singing the track to a crowd of superfans, it felt like Roan was truly pointing the performance at the person who inspired the lyrics.

The singer showed off her vocal chops in ballads like “Casual” and “Kaleidoscope” while playing the piano. Her encore songs, “California” and “Pink Pony Club,” exemplified a bit of why the show was sold out in the first place. Roan has an undeniable ability to sing her heart out to tracks that every fan can’t help but jump around and dance to.

Roan attracted such a crowd at the riverside venue that she even acknowledged folks on the opposite side of the Flats who camped out to get a glimpse of the star and her iconic voice. There was an overwhelming feeling her next visit here would be in a stadium venue. The show already had to move from The Agora to Jacobs Pavilion to accommodate a larger crowd, and it somehow still didn’t feel big enough.

“The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess” already felt like the future of pop, but her live performance cemented it. The 26-year-old star captivated a crowd better than some industry vets, especially in the pop space.

At the Cleveland show, there was a feeling that every fan in attendance was getting to see something special — a budding artist ready to make authentic music that people relate to. Roan made the massive crowd feel like an intimate dance party with friends. That’s why it’s so exciting to think about where her career will be the next time she visits Northeast Ohio.

Auburn men's golf advances to national championship

Auburn freshmen Jackson Koivun celebrates his victory on the 21st hole in sudden death...

CARLSBAD, Calif. (WSFA) - The Auburn men’s golf team will play for a national championship on Wednesday afternoon for the first time in program history.

Auburn trailed Ohio State early in its semifinal match and were down 3-2 early before Junior Brendan Valdes won back-to-back holes on 13 and 14 to flip the match. Valdes went on to tie his final four holes to defeat Jackson Chandler 1-up.

Ohio State did not go away quietly and came back with two points of their own. However, Auburn senior J.M. Butler handled the pressure with great composure and came back to level the match at two-all. Butler took the lead at the sixth hole and never looked back in a matchup against a familiar foe from the 2023 U.S. Amauter, Neal Shipley.

Heading into 18, the Tigers needed a tie to secure a win, and freshman Jackson Koivun came in with a one-point lead. A late push from Buckeye Adam Walin canceled that lead on the final hole, forcing the match into sudden death. After they tied on the first two playoff holes, Koivun sealed the deal and punched the Tiger’s ticket into the final with a birdie on 21.

“We’re playing for so much here,” Koivun said. “I didn’t want to let my team, my school, my coaches down.”

After defeating Virginia and Ohio State on Tuesday, the Tigers are set to face Florida State in the tournament’s final match on Wednesday.

“We’ve had a great year, but it’s unfinished,” Auburn head coach Nick Clinard said. “The job’s not finished. We are going up against a great Florida State team. It’s going to be an all-out battle tomorrow.”

Auburn will tee off at 4:25 p.m. against the Seminoles at the Omni La Costa Champions Course. You can catch the finale on the Golf Channel beginning at 5 p.m.

Alex G Is Building a Mystery

Alex G

Alex Giannascoli suspects that his car smells like piss. The 29-year old songwriter leans around from the driver seat of his silver sedan to examine the potential offender: Rocco, a mid-size, mottled black-and-brown mutt who sits calmly in the backseat, the portrait of innocence. It’s a humid July afternoon and Giannascoli, who performs under the name Alex G , has just arrived at Blackwood, New Jersey’s Timber Creek dog park, a massive wooded complex half an hour outside Philadelphia. Clutching a sweating Dunkin’ iced coffee in one hand, with his slightly silvering dark hair tucked under an Ohio University baseball cap, he unclips Rocco’s leash. The dog gallops towards a lake where, just as Giannascoli predicted, he searches for fish along the shore.

The tranquil scene is suddenly interrupted when Rocco wanders away from the water and into a stranger’s bag of food. With a mumbled “oh shit,” Giannascoli leaps up from a picnic table to pull Rocco away from Jake, an idiotically cute Goldendoodle. “He eats everything, he might not leave you alone,” the musician warns Jake’s owner with an awkward chuckle as Rocco starts sniffing around for treats. She waves him away with the nonchalance of the mom who knows she has all the best snacks, and Giannascoli returns to the table mildly defeated. “He’s going to eat all her food.”

Giannascoli and his girlfriend, Molly Germer, a classically trained violinist who tours with Japanese Breakfast , adopted Rocco in late 2019. Initially, there were logistical concerns about what to do with the pup when Giannascoli hit the road in support of his eighth record, the beguiling House of Sugar . When COVID put those plans on pause, he stayed in Philadelphia for the longest stretch of time since 2014. He had already started working on his latest album, God Save the Animals , in the same fashion he has since he was a teenager, writing and demoing all the parts at home. Following House of Sugar , Giannascoli became increasingly curious about working in a studio. The pandemic allowed him to dip his feet into this world with his own sense of spontaneity. “I wasn’t planning ahead very much,” he says. “I would just call different studios the day of and see which one was available.”

Alex G standing surrounded by trees

Out later this month, God Save the Animals is Alex G’s most refined album yet, proof that he can evolve beyond home-recording while still retaining a mesmerizing weirdness. The warm, ’90s alt-rock glow of “Runner” is splintered by a declaration—“I have done a couple bad things!”—followed by a guttural scream. Sometimes the surprises arrive as stylistic choices, like on “No Bitterness,” which ponders radical acceptance atop a mind-melting hyperpop breakdown. Other moments disarm through heartfelt explorations of spirituality. “Some of the lyrics refer back to faith or God,” he explains as we walk through the woods in search of a quiet place to chat. “It’s not a concept album, but those types of lyrics came up more than usual so I figured it couldn’t hurt.”

On the folksy stunner “ Miracles ,” a character clings to their faith in the face of uncertainties about parenthood and creative labor: “How many more songs am I supposed to write/Before I should turn it off and say goodnight?” It’s tempting to project this narrative onto Giannascoli’s own life, but he insists that all of his songs, including “Miracles,” are filled with “grotesque caricatures, a mess of what’s true and what’s not.”

Giannascoli’s hesitation to dissect his work has led fans to theorize that his songs are about everything from good-natured gamblers to a romantically-invested schoolyard bully to dogs. Especially dogs . It’s not that much of a stretch—canines appear on a number of songs and a few album covers —but he’s ready to put that rumor to rest. He adopts a shriek of mock indignation—“ It’s not all about dogs! ”—before coming to a halt in the middle of a massive field. Then, a groan: “I’m saying this as we’re walking my dog through a dog park.”

He doubles down on the insistence that he’s “not, like, an animal guy, not any more than your average person,” despite once singing “I do animals/Not people.” So what about the title, God Save the Animals ? A line saved from a discarded song, “it made me feel something” is all he’ll say. Giannascoli is aware that his reticence can make him a challenging subject. “It’s always the same thing with me where I work pretty hard on the music and I don’t work very hard on my personality,” he concedes with a grin.

Alex G sitting on a rock outdoors

Alex G first released his songs on MySpace, hiding his “dorky 12-year-old” face behind avatars because, he dryly notes, “I wanted people to like the music.” As a teenager in the mid-2000s, he turned his attention to solo home recordings that he distributed via email, MediaFire, and burned CDs. (Indie rock archeologists have painstakingly dug up these scraps , which Giannascoli considers “flattering” while reiterating that he has grown a lot as an artist.) By the early 2010s, he had uploaded his already prolific catalog to Bandcamp and adopted an abbreviated version of his name after seeing that strangers were using it when sharing his music online.

Though he’s refined his songwriting trademarks over time, nearly all of them are evident in these early songs: his seemingly instinctual gift for writing beautiful melodies, as well as the competing desire to scribble all over them until they are kinda deranged; a fondness for characters that are at once naive and wicked, benevolent and self-centered; and a boyish drawl frequently warped to uncanny extremes, as inspired by the Swedish electronic duo the Knife. “When I discovered that [vocal modulation] effect on GarageBand,” he says, “I was like, fuck yeah, I’m gonna do this on all my shit .”

Giannascoli’s cult following was of his own creation. After the release of his adored 2014 album, DSU , he signed with the prominent indie label Domino, ebbing his constant stream of releases to a steady drip. Frank Ocean came calling, and Giannascoli contributed guitar parts to 2016’s Blonde and Endless , followed by a handful of live dates that were documented by director Spike Jonze. If anything shifted for Alex G after Blonde , he says, it was that “maybe more people gave me the benefit of the doubt.”

In the years since, Giannascoli has been reliably unpredictable, like when he performed as (Sandy) Alex G for three years without much explanation. He tried out country twang on 2017’s Rocket , indulged in experimental soundscapes on House of Sugar , and continued his streak of unsettling work with the We’re All Going to the World’s Fair score. His predisposition to keep his head down, stay off social media, and occasionally cover Coldplay has made it all the more hilarious when an odd bit of ephemera floats to the surface. There was the time in 2019 when conservatives mistook a photo of him with beer spilled all over his crotch for Texas politician Beto O’Rourke. More recently, a clip of him hypnotically shaking his rump to the demonic God Save the Animals cut “ Blessing ” went viral. Giannascoli, for his part, didn’t understand why the dancing video got so much attention: “I feel like I’m always doing random shit.”

Alex G: I’m less insecure about it, but I’m definitely more of a perfectionist now. On previous albums, I didn’t care as much, or I guess I felt like if the ideas were there and I was getting them across, they’ll live out there for whoever wants them. But for this album, I wanted to be on key. If I spend all this time on the lyrics and shit I might as well do it right.

As far as production, I’d imagine I have a lot in common with electronic or pop producers. I’m not trying to get something organic, I’m going in and chopping stuff up, manipulating things after the fact. I don’t care about the process. I just want the product to sound exactly how I want it. Working in a studio helped me become more aware of my vocal performance because the quality of the microphones was so much better—I could hear all the details that I was screwing up. My normal method has been to treat the vocals like any other instrument, but I realized that I could put them upfront in the mix and treat it like a pop song.

It’s more like I’m trying to capture a feeling more immediately. Take the Minions movie : You could have people dressed up like minions or you could animate the Minions. It’s a ridiculous example but they’re all over the internet so they come to mind. I’m trying to depict the thing physically as opposed to just saying the words and hoping the listener will come around to the image.

Alex G standing in the woods

Moby was one of the first artists I fell in love with. My sister had Play on CD: I was obsessed, I would listen to it all day. Something about the way he organizes everything in these really rigid patterns was super gratifying for me, I could really understand and visualize the songs. I had a friend who had GarageBand and I remember dragging the loops around and realizing that I could do shit like that.

My sister’s CD collection was my source of music for a long time. When she showed me Kid A , I was really psyched about the electronic drums and creepy voices. Radiohead was my gateway into other bands, like Modest Mouse. From like 15 to 19, all I listened to was Elliott Smith. I started to appreciate the more human aspect of music and was attracted to the idea of writing my own lyrics. It became important to me to express myself verbally as opposed to just making stuff that sounded cool.

A few people that I’m close to became religious. It made me wonder what they found. I love exploring those concepts lyrically because I don’t have to have any answers. I can just paint an abstract picture and see what happens. I’m not great at talking about this stuff in a way that I would feel comfortable having a ton of people read. I didn’t know [what faith meant] at the beginning of this writing process and I still don’t really know.

Over the last couple of years, it dawned on me that you can forgive yourself. I don’t want to get into this whole corny-ass shit, but I realized how powerful that is.

Maybe when I was younger it was a matter of keeping my business private. But really it’s just gut. Sometimes I leave personal things in because it just feels right. I’m basically making a collage with every song and there’s no exact image I’m trying to replicate. My idea of why I did what I did changes every day. The true answer is, I don’t know.

Sometimes people ask if I’m being ironic or earnest, and it’s like, that’s not even the point. Part of my goal is to make the angle unclear, even to myself. I just want to make it strike a chord.

I go on there from time to time. Sometimes I see something, and I have to take a long break because sometimes stuff hits you in the wrong way. Beyond Reddit, I’ve seen people read into songs and assess them in a way that I haven’t even considered. Sometimes I’m writing from a knee-jerk place and I just put it down, because it feels right or poetic in those moments, but I don’t really know what I’m talking about. So when someone’s interpretation is really dead on, I am moved. It’s as if they knew what I was getting at better than I did. But 99 percent of the time it’s fucking wrong. [ Laughs ] I’ve made peace with that, I can’t take it for granted that people actually care. That’s still pretty nuts to me.

Alex G surrounded by trees

I probably sit down to write just about as much. Maybe it’s a little different now because I have more responsibilities and so I can’t get my head there as quickly as I used to. But it’s about the same. I’m writing all the time because it feels like what I’m supposed to do. Not in a noble way, it’s just what I know how to do and if I’m not doing something, I go crazy.

“Sandy” is a song written from a child’s perspective, which is funny in retrospect because I was probably 17 or 18, writing about a 14-year-old as if they were super young. When I wrote it back in 2011, I didn’t have much online as Alex G but had been making a ton of music and needed somewhere to put it all. I had considered doing a project where all of the songs were written from the perspective of this character, Sandy, so I made that my Bandcamp name. I never ended up writing another song like “Sandy” but when I had to change my name, I just used that. Looking back, it’s so goofy, Sandy in parentheses. I don’t want to put anyone on blast but putting Sandy on my name was not for any artistic purpose, it was purely functional, like, don’t sue me .

It’s definitely a conscious thing but there wasn’t one day where we decided to take it more seriously. Around the House of Sugar tour, we started practicing more and got on a more regular schedule. We’re getting older. I’m hitting a point where this is probably my best bet for getting money. If it doesn’t work out, I’ll be fine, I can do other stuff. I guess my thinking is that this is a pretty nice gig, so we should take it more seriously and try to get as much longevity out of it.

When I round the finish line of every record, I always feel like it’s the worst thing I’ve ever done. That I lost whatever it was that enabled me to make everything that came before. Molly always reminds me that I do this every single time without fail, but it doesn’t help. I’m like, yeah, I know I did it before, but this time it’s real . I’ve mentally prepared myself for this one. People could hear it and be like, Oh he actually kind of sucks now , and I’ll be like, Yeah, I thought so too .

I’m grateful that I have this outlet because I’ve encountered that I’m not great at expressing myself in life otherwise. Every time I make music, I’m trying to poke this thing in my brain that makes me go, cool . Studying music, for example, is not going to make hitting that button any easier. Maybe it would make hitting other people’s buttons easier, but all I’m interested in is my button.

From Pop-Tarts to Happy Meals, a food writer recreates American classics with an Asian flavor

Frankie Gaw's social media page is filled with videos of creations like these — items you won't usually find at your local American grocery store.

That’s the whole point, says Gaw, a Taiwanese American food creator and author of the cookbook First Generation.

“I asked myself, in an alternate universe, where the world is much more inclusive and embraced all of these diverse flavors, what are the things that Asian Americans would want to see?” he said.

Gaw talked with NPR about how his hit social media cooking series “Turning American classics Asian" came to be, and its origin as a tribute to his family and his Midwest upbringing.

The grocery store seemed stuck in time

The idea sprouted after a trip to his local supermarket. Traversing through the aisles, Gaw noticed that much of the food stocked on the shelves resembled what he saw as a kid 20 years ago. Meanwhile, ingredients like soy sauce and miso were still strictly grouped in “Asian” or “International" aisles.

“Restaurants have been embracing more Asian ingredients, and it feels like grocery stores have remained the same," Gaw said.

For many immigrants and children of immigrants, food is an intimate part of identity. For Gaw, straddling between the “Asian” aisle and the rest of the grocery store was also symbolic of his upbringing in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Growing up, Gaw felt like he was living a double life. In public, Gaw enjoyed McDonald’s chicken nuggets and fries. At home, he feasted on his grandmother’s beef noodle soup. It took time for him to embrace his dual-taste palette.

Years later in his Seattle apartment, Gaw began experimenting with his childhood favorites. He tinkered with Campbell's cream of mushroom soup and turned it into congee. He infused mac and cheese with miso. He went as far as designing the packaging for each meal as if he owned a food company.

Gaw shared his concoctions on social media. It took off. His food and his experiences at the grocery store resonated with people, especially other Asian Americans.

“It was a surprise. I didn't realize how many people had similar experiences as me," he said.

A love letter to his kid self

“Turning American classics Asian” is not just about Gaw’s appreciation for Asian flavors and ingredients, or a diss to American staples. Instead, it’s Gaw’s way of paying homage to both — and on a larger scale, to the experiences of Asian Americans.

“I have always straddled this sort of in-between space,” he said. “Growing up in the Midwest, I never felt Asian enough. But then, being with my Asian family, I didn’t feel American enough.”

Had matcha flavored Twinkies or strawberry lychee Pop-Tarts been around when Gaw was younger, he thinks it would’ve helped him embrace that in-between experience.

“If I was in a generic American grocery store and then I saw rice cakes, I think that would’ve allowed me to break down the walls of, ‘Oh this only exists within my home,’ ” he said. “And I could’ve existed as my whole self out in the world.”

The project also relates back to his family and growing up in the Midwest

Gaw’s journey into cooking and his first cookbook were motivated by his father, who died in 2014 from lung cancer. Revisiting his father and his paternal grandmother’s old dishes was a way to grieve and keep his father’s memory alive, Gaw said.

In this cooking series, he also reminisces about the time spent with his mother. It’s because of her that Gaw was able to indulge on Lunchables, Twinkies and Pop-Tarts as a kid. She wanted to make sure he would fit in and make friends.

“My mom would stock the entire pantry so that when I go into lunch period, I was like the number one kid in the cafeteria with the best lunch,” he said.

The project also stems from Gaw’s Midwestern roots. In his neighborhood, restaurants were synonymous with fast food and Olive Garden was the place to go on special occasions.

Late nights with his parents at the McDonald's drive-through were common as a kid, Gaw said, because his parents were often exhausted after long hours at work. “It was a reminder of how much they had to hustle,” he said.

In Gaw’s version of a Happy Meal, he steams buns and marries ground pork with scallions and ginger, topping it off with a chili crunch ketchup.

As he cooks, he thinks about his father, his mother, his grandparents — and the comfort that these dishes would’ve brought them as they were adjusting to life in America.

“I think they always felt like they were on the outside breaking in," he said. "To see their food at a fast food institution, I think it would've made them feel like they have a seat at the table."
