alesund norway shore excursions

Duration 8 hrs

First, visit attractive Alesund, built on three islands with the spectacular Sunnmore Alps in the background. Pass by Borgund Fjord, with its charming suburbs and well-kept gardens and continue to the municipality of Stordal, well known for its furniture factories, an important export item.

As you reach the fertile valley of Valldal, you’ll ascend up the valley to Trollstigen, reaching approximately 2,800 feet/850 meters above sea level, then start the descent down the Trolls' Path with its daring hairpin bends. Once back down in valley, make a photo stop to take in the lovely Stigfossen Waterfall cascading down the mountainside.

Next, detour up to Trollveggen where you’ll find the Troll Wall with the highest perpendicular rock face in Europe. Climbers from all parts of the world come to visit this over 3,000 foot/1,000 meter tall wall to try out the various routes to the top. Then, pass by Romsdals Fjord with its many small villages known for its ship and boat building. Before returning to your ship, cross over the Orskog Mountain Plateau, a popular skiing area.

alesund norway shore excursions

Duration 6 1/2 hrs

Stunning scenery and the highlights of Alesund are yours to discover in this tour that takes you to the top of Mount Stranda by bus, ferry and cable car. A buffet style lunch at the top allows you to enjoy the views as you dine.

Enjoy a short city sightseeing of some of the highlights of Alesund before heading for the fjords. Cross the fjord by ferry, and then drive up the mountain, with great views along the way.

Arriving at Mount Stranda’s cable car station, a gondola takes you to the top, 3418 feet above sea level. Here goats graze during summer, and there is even snow in some areas. The panoramic view from Mt. Stranda reaches far and wide. From this privileged view point, you can see Geiranger Fjord, UNESCCO World Heritage site, and Jostedal Glacier, the largest in Continental Europe. As order of sites may vary, lunch will be enjoyed either before or after the gondola ride. After crossing the fjord by ferry, the tour will take a different route back to the pier, making a short photo stop (time permitting) at Mt. Aksla, for an unrivaled view of Alesund from this vantage point.

alesund norway shore excursions

Duration 4 hrs

Climb a granite wall to the summit of Mount Aksla using metal hand-holds in the rock face that make the ascent surprisingly easy. As a warm-up, you will walk to the foot of the mountain, which rises somewhat steeply from the town park. After a briefing to ensure that you maximize the experience, you will start climbing by means of the hand-holds that are anchored into the mountain’s rocky southern wall. For added safety, you will be harnessed to a steel cable that runs the length of the via ferrata – meaning “iron route” in Italian. The advantage of ascending via ferrata is that it allows even non-rock-climbers to confidently scale a slope that would otherwise be impossible. There is a bench half-way up where you can pause and take in the spectacular scenery before continuing to the mountaintop. The descent will be much easier. Just walk down the stone staircase.

• Get a real sense of accomplishment by climbing the rocky southern face of Mount Aksla. • Use the metal hand-holds and harness that make the ascent easier and more carefree. • Take a break on the bench halfway up the slope and gaze out over Alesund and beyond. • Walk down Mount Aksla via the stone steps that are cut into the side of the mountain.

HELPFUL HINTS

• Dress in weather-appropriate clothing. • Wear flat comfortable walking shoes.

Your sightseeing boat takes you on an approximately 3-4 hour cruise along the striking scenery that Kaiser Wilhelm valued so highly more than 100 years ago. The views of nature's mountains and fjords from this perspective are simply spectacular.

Details about this scheduled guided day tour:

From the meeting point the bus will take you through several underwater tunnels to reach the first destination, the Island of Giske. This island is relatively flat and very fertile. You will find many farms and grazing cows and sheep. Giske is known as the birthplace of the famous Viking Rollo, who was the first Duke of Normandy and an ancestor of the British Royal Family. A photo stop will be made at the marble church, built in the 12th century. The excursion continues to the beautiful island of Godøy and its typical fishing village Alnes. Here you can enjoy an amazing view over the Atlantic Ocean, visit the lighthouse or go for a stroll on the beach.

After visiting the beautiful islands, you will be taken several centuries back in time to the years where most Norwegians lived a hard life, often were very poor and lived from agriculture and fishing. You will learn all about it at the Sunnmøre Museum. Our guide will lead you through the open-air part of the museum where 55 old houses are located. Some are open, meaning you can take a peek inside. Several exhibitions can be visited inside the main building and in the boat house you will learn even more about how life in this part of Norway changed over the centuries.

The excursion continues to Storhaugen viewpoint, from where you can enjoy the spectacular view over the city and its surrounding islands. After driving down the house-mountain, the bus will take you through the city center. The town has an unusually consistent architecture; Art Nouveau. Most of these colourful houses and buildings have been built between 1904 and 1907, after the fire which destroyed over 800 houses in the city center in January 1904.

NB: Due to new regulations from the city for Mount Aksla, there is an influx of new visitors to Alnes lighthouse. On some occasions our visit to Alnes may change from an inside visit to an outside or panorama visit.
