For over two years, The Weeknd has been on a musical journey cementing himself as one of the biggest pop performers in modern music history. In 2020, he released After Hours which helmed the record-breaking single “Blinding Lights” and found hits in “Heartless” and “Save Your Tears.” He kicked off 2022 with the release of Dawn FM , his conceptual fifth studio album about being trapped in a discotheque purgatory. Now, The Weeknd is combining these two worlds for the 2022 After Hours Til Dawn stadium tour.

The first leg of the extensive tour will begin in North America with 18 shows supported by pop powerhouse Doja Cat . The tour kicks off in The Weeknd’s hometown of Toronto on July 8 and makes stops in Philadelphia, New York, Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Miami, Atlanta, Denver, Las Vegas, Seattle, and more before wrapping with a show at Los Angeles’ Sofi Stadium on September 2. Additional international dates are to be announced.

Ticket sales for the North American leg of the After Hours Til Dawn tour will begin on Thursday, March 10 via The Weeknd’s official website . Fans who purchased tickets to the After Hours arena tour, originally scheduled for 2021 then rescheduled to 2022 before being canceled entirely for a shift towards stadiums, will receive first access to tickets for the newly announced dates via an exclusive presale beginning March 4.

The Weeknd Takes Us Inside His Brave New World — Finally — in Spectacular Stadium Tour Opener

By Waiss Aramesh

Waiss Aramesh

For the past two years, while we’ve all been stuck inside or slowly reacclimating ourselves with the world outside, the Weeknd has been putting on a master class in musical world building. Both After Hours , released at the height of the pandemic in 2020, and Dawn FM , which dropped in January of this year, were visual undertakings as much as they were musical projects. The two albums (the dance-heavy Dawn FM especially) lend themselves to the live experience and beg to be consumed and celebrated apart from a siloed listening. Thankfully, the Weeknd finally brought the two projects — as well as nods to each of his eras — to the most “outside” you can be: a stadium tour , with the first stop at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

It hasn’t been the easiest road to get here. The Weeknd initially announced an After Hours tour back on Feb. 20, 2020; a couple of postponements and a new LP later, he rebranded and set his sights on larger venues. He announced the After Hours til Dawn Tour after yet another delay, due to the war in Ukraine, and then hit another roadblock just hours before its original opening night in Toronto last week. A massive internet outage forced the show to be postponed, which meant Lincoln Financial Field would kick off the stadium run.

The crowd was understandably full of pent-up energy . Fans spent the couple of hours before Tesfaye took the stage sneaking into each section’s first row and exchanging thoughts on merch (“I love your necklace” a girl on line for crab fries told another who wore a shiny “XO” pendant). An inflated moon, tens of feet tall, glowed as the sun fell and thick smog began to fill the stadium at intervals: first blue, then white, and then blue again. Eventually, the chants of “Abel” subdued and more than a dozen red-shrouded figures emerged. It was time to begin.

The Weeknd, at first wearing a mask and a long black coat instead of reprising his After Hours– era red suit (thankfully), opened the show standing on top of his apocalyptic-city set, in front of a massive screen adorned with lights and lasers that dispersed across Lincoln Financial Field. Tesfaye set the vibe with “Alone Again,” a moody and intense After Hours deep cut. He then went on a Dawn FM spree, performing “Gasoline,” “Sacrifice,” and “How Do I Make You Love Me” in succession, as if to establish that the beginning of the show was foremost about giving his two recent projects their due. The hits and the fan favorites would come soon enough, but we would have to wait.

the weeknd philadelphia tour opener

Tesfaye moved back and forth across the catwalk, which stretched almost the entire length of the field, for the duration of the show. At times, the lyrics seemed to tumble out of him, like the Weeknd couldn’t wait to deliver these songs in a setting like this. He worked the crowd, flashing a wide grin when he made eye contact with fans who were singing the hell out of “Kiss Land.”

As the set continued, the Weeknd dove deep into his discography. The aforementioned “Kiss Land,” which Tesfaye hadn’t performed since 2013, elicited a feral reaction from longtime fans. This was for those who’d been around for a while — I’m talking Mod Club in Toronto for Tesfaye’s first show or Paradise Theater up in the Bronx in 2012. The Weeknd went even further back than “Kiss Land,” performing “Wicked Games” and “The Morning,” off his genre-redefining House of Balloons debut mixtape.

The show had its horny-jail moments. During his performance of the 11-times-platinum “The Hills,” the Weeknd grabbed his crotch, gyrated, and humped the air. During a transition that led into the fan-favorite and highly suggestive “Often,” Tesfaye stuck his tongue out and flicked it back and forth repeatedly. In line with Tesfaye celebrating his career’s biggest moments, he performed his extremely R-rated “Or Nah” verse from 2014. His fans loved it. Parents winced. Such is the dichotomy of a Weeknd show.

The Weeknd made sure to touch all corners of his discography, going from streaming behemoths like “Save Your Tears” and “Can’t Feel My Face,” which elicited high-energy responses from the crowd, to slowing it down and playing some more poignant cuts like “Die For You,” which he performed for the first time in five years, underneath the suspended moon. And I’d be remiss not to mention the braggadocious Metro Boomin-produced “Heartless,” of which we’re partial to a certain line: “Photoshoots, I’m a star now/I’m talking Time, Rolling Stone, and Bazaar now.”

The Weeknd Will Conclude Trilogy With New Album 'Hurry Up Tomorrow'

The weeknd meditates on a looming end in new 'unprepared certainty...' teaser, the weeknd previews journey into the abyss with eerie new music teaser.

“Tonight is actually the first night of the [tour],” the Weeknd informed the crowd, sounding relieved if anything. “Not a bad turnout.”

The sheer scope of the performance — and the numbers in the stands — became most apparent every time wristbands, distributed to fans as they entered the stadium, glowed in coordination with the set. During the high-energy “Less Than Zero,” the wristbands (along with the strobe lights and the levitating moon) turned blue, setting off a beautiful light show to accompany a song about being unable to face your “darkest truth.” More dichotomy at work.

The Weeknd capped off the evening with a dazzling performance of “Blinding Lights,” as strobe lights that lined the catwalk on either side shot up into the night sky, far beyond the confines of the Eagles’ home stadium.

the weeknd philadelphia tour opener

After he finished, Tesfaye looked around, seeming to take it all in. He then turned, as if he had suddenly become one of his era-defining characters and been put under a trance, and began to follow the red-shrouded figures through the apocalyptic-city set and offstage. The house lights came up, music began to play through the speakers, and it became apparent (though not immediately) that the show was over.

There was a sense of confusion at first — it was an anticlimactic end to a boisterous evening — but it’s not unlike Tesfaye to march to his own drum and at his own pace. If the evening showed us anything, it’s the Weeknd’s ability to excel across genres and evolve his sound without losing a step. He relishes in flipping the script, and does so to great success. That success materialized last night in the form of a stadium full of people singing hit after hit released across a decade of dominance.

“Alone Again” “Gasoline” “Sacrifice” “How Do I Make You Love Me” “Can’t Feel My Face” “Take My Breath” “Hurricane” “The Hills” “Often” “Crew Love” “Starboy” “Heartless” “Low Life” “Or Nah” “Kiss Land” “Party Monster” “Faith” “After Hours” “Out of Time” “I Feel It Coming” “Die For You” “Is There Someone Else?” “I Was Never There” “Wicked Games” “Call Out My Name” “The Morning” “Save Your Tears” “Less Than Zero” “Blinding Lights”

The Weeknd tour

It’s difficult to imagine that an intensely theatrical performer like the Weeknd — whose videos, concerts, 2021 Super Bowl Halftime performance and lyrics are loaded with vibrant, at times disturbing imagery — would launch his first-ever stadium tour without spectacle.

And thankfully, after several  incidents of unwanted drama — including two Covid-related delays, the postponement of the tour’s intended opening date in Toronto last weekend due to a Canada-wide wireless outage, and original opening act Doja Cat dropping out due to tonsil surgery — for the belated first night of his “After Hours Til Dawn” tour in Philadelphia, the theatrics were all onstage.

The concert took place on a humid July night in Philadelphia, which had a temperature of 87 degrees as the show opened with sets from producer-artist Mike Dean and Canadian electronic act Kaytranada, but it had cooled down by the time the Weeknd’s headlining set began at around 9 p.m. The Weeknd’s best music traffics in mood, nuance and a mixture of ecstasy and darkness, and that carried over onto a sprawling, technically complex stage, which broadly resembles a towering, crumbling cityscape and spanned much of the Lincoln Financial Field’s grounds. For the two-hour set, the singer, decked as usual in black, was accompanied by a gang of sheathed dancers  — and a crowd of nearly 70,000 people, many of whom were devotees in red jackets and bandaged noses, in emulation of his “After Hours” look .

Popular on variety.

Rising onto the set’s centerpiece with his shrouded dancers below, the Weeknd emerged wearing a clear face mask and a car-length coat, easing into an oscillating, electro take on the “After Hours” opener “Alone Again” with a clear, warm voice that conveyed both despondence and a world-weary ennui.

Dropping down to stage level, he followed his dancers into a new-wave-inflected take on “Gasoline,” picking up the pace and dancing, holding out his arms to the audience even as the lyrics held them at bay.

The set that followed was heavy on his two most recent albums, this year’s “Dawn FM” and 2020’s “After Hours,” with his earlier hits dropped in strategically to keep the crowd hyped — although the arrangements of many of the songs were revamped. His angelic voice soared through the Swedish House Mafia remix version of “Sacrifice,” a disco-fied “How Do I Make You Love Me?” and a jittery version of “Can’t Feel My Face” that featured a break reminiscent of vintage New Order. Those three tracks, performed as a medley, turned the venue into an apocalyptic dance party, with the Weeknd as its jovial, devilish host.

Although musicians were not visible on the sprawling stage, they certainly made their presence heard: Mangled guitars and wheezing church organs dominated his recent hit “Take My Breath” and “Hurricane,” followed by the sultry “Often.”

He brought the energy level down with spacey takes on “Starboy” and “Heartless,” with cobalt-blue lighting adding to the cool atmosphere; the ambient R&B songs acted as a cooling agent to the heated emotions and red hues of the night’s first half.

That mood continued through the evening’s more ruminative second half as the Weeknd moved gently but no less theatrically through the ‘90s-Motown vibes of “Out of Time,” a celestial “Less Than Zero” and a cinematic “Save Your Tears.” Through these songs, which were filled with bluesy guitar licks and soulful synths, he brought down his voice an octave, adding to the lovelorn emotions of the lyrics.

Of course, the two-hour show wound to a close with the biggest of his many hits, the ‘80s inflected global smash “Blinding Lights,” a song that in many ways summed up the contrasts of the show, the music and the performer: an avant-garde superstar, an aloof lover man, a combination of beauty and madness, all contained in a concert that somehow felt intimate in a football stadium with nearly 70,000 fellow devotees.

Along with his tour dates, The Weeknd also announced on Thursday (March 3) the launch of his XO Humanitarian Fund in partnership with the United Nations World Food Programme. As the organization’s Goodwill Ambassador, The Weeknd will contribute $1 from every tour ticket sold to the fund as well as a $500,000 donation.

“The goal with this fund is to provide immediate life-saving support to people who are on the brink of starvation,” The Weeknd said in a statement. “I’m so thankful to have WFP as a partner and to further expand our reach to those who need it most.”

“As he launches his global tour , the Weeknd is not just lighting up the lives of his millions of fans – he is also shining a spotlight on the suffering of the millions threatened by famine,” WFP Executive Director David Beasley added. “The XO Humanitarian Fund, Powered by World Food Programme is a new dawn in the struggle to end global hunger and WFP is proud to partner with Abel to save lives. He is truly an inspiration to the next generation of humanitarians.”

Along with The Weeknd’s contribution, the WFP will also donate $1 million to the fund. According to the statement, the Canadian crooner set up the fund to support the WFP’s critical food assistance program in countries like Ukraine, Ethiopia, Madagascar and Yemen.

The Weeknd performing at Coachella

The Weeknd has revealed dates for the global leg of his After Hours Til Dawn stadium tour. Set to kick off in 2023, the expansion covers Europe and Latin America with stops in Stockholm, Amsterdam, Mexico City, Rio de Janeiro and more before wrapping up in Santiago, Chile. Additional dates are still being announced according to a press release.

Through a personal donation of $500,000, funds raised through ticket sales, proceeds from an exclusive tour t-shirt, tour sponsor Binance’s $2 million contribution and additional partnerships, the award-winning performer was able to donate millions to the cause he represents.

An initial $2 million grant will be going toward providing emergency food and nutrition assistance to the most food-insecure regions of Ethiopia, reaching more than 75,000 people. The Weeknd presented a check to World Food Program USA during a private event at his After Hours Til Dawn concert last weekend (Nov. 27) in Los Angeles.

“We are deeply appreciative and humbled by The Weeknd’s steadfast support, as well as that of his loyal fans and partners,” expressed Barron Segar, World Food Program USA president and CEO. “Abel is an inspiration to us all, and through his efforts, thousands of families will have food security and hope for a better future.”

The Weeknd And SZA May Finally Release Their “Die For You” Remix

The Weeknd will be joined by Kaytranada and Mike Dean on all European dates. The After Hours Till Dawn tour highlights music from The Weeknd’s 2020 album After Hours as well as his acclaimed 2022 release Dawn FM.

The “Starboy” singer will also continue his partnership with the U.N. World Food Programme to contribute funds from the worldwide trek to the XO Humanitarian Fund. €1 from each ticket sold across Europe, £1 in the UK, and the $1 equivalent in countries across Latin America will be donated to this important cause.

Additional ticketing information for The Weeknd’s global tour can be found on the official website. Take a listen to Dawn FM below.

The Weeknd After Hours Til Dawn Tour 2022

What Songs Is The Weeknd Playing On The ‘After Hours Til Dawn’ Tour?

Derrick Rossignol

The pandemic made it so The Weeknd couldn’t tour behind 2020’s After Hours immediately following its release, but he didn’t want that to stop him from putting out another album. He ended up doing just that, dropping Dawn FM earlier this year. That didn’t put an After Hours tour to rest, though. Instead, The Weeknd is supporting both albums on his ongoing After Hours Til Dawn tour .

The trek kicked off in mid-July and so far, The Weeknd has six shows under his belt (as of August 4). At those concerts, what songs has he been performing most?

The answer right now is all of them, according to data from Setlist.fm , the most comprehensive resource for concert setlists available online; For each show, he’s had the exact same 29-song setlist, which makes sense given how early into the tour he is.

Setlist.fm also has an “average setlist” for the After Hours Til Dawn tour , which is based on setlists from previous shows, so it’s an indication of how an upcoming The Weeknd show might be structured. This one was probably pretty easy to figure out.

As for album-by-album representation on the setlist, Dawn FM has the most songs included, followed closely by After Hours . Then, it’s Starboy , Beauty Behind The Madness , House Of Balloons , My Dear Melancholy , and Kiss Land . If all the “covers” (songs The Weeknd performs on but isn’t the primary artist of on the album version) were considered an album, they’d go after Starboy in the rankings and before Beauty .

Find The Weeknd’s most played songs on After Hours Til Dawn tour below, as well as the tour’s average setlist. Check out The Weeknd’s upcoming tour dates here .

The Weeknd Adds 2023 Tour Dates

The Weeknd wearing sunglasses

Just one day after bringing the first leg of his After Hours Til Dawn Tour to a close, the Weeknd has announced even more tour dates to come in the new year. The second leg begins in June 2023, and the trek runs through Europe and Latin America. Check out the Weeknd’s schedule below.

The Weeknd released his fifth studio album, Dawn FM , in January. The album was withheld from consideration for the 2023 Grammy Awards , continuing a boycott that started in 2021 after the Weeknd’s previous album, After Hours , failed to receive any Grammy nominations. Despite the boycott, the Weeknd won the 2022 Grammy Award for Best Melodic Rap Performance for his contributions to the Kanye West song “Hurricane.”
