Checking and Replacing Fuses

The wiring circuits in your vehicle are protected from short circuits by a combination of fuses, circuit breakers, and fusible thermal links. This greatly reduces the chance of fires caused by electrical problems.

Look at the silver-colored band inside the fuse. If the band is broken or melted, replace the fuse. Be sure you replace a bad fuse with a new one of the identical size and rating.

Fuses of the same amperage can be temporarily borrowed from another fuse location if a fuse goes out. Replace the fuse as soon as you can.

• Before replacing a fuse check that the key has been removed from the ignition and that all the services are switched off and/or disengaged.
• Do not repair fuses and never replace a blown fuse with one that has a higher amp rating. This can cause damage to the electrical system and fire.
• Never replace a broken fuse with anything other than a new fuse. Use always an intact fuse of the same color.
• If a fuse blows again contact a qualified service center.
• Do not add anything electrical to your vehicle unless you check with your dealer/retailer first. Some electrical equipment can damage your vehicle and can keep other components from working as they should.

Cruise Control Not Working 2008 Silverado [Easy fix]

Today we will answer the question - Why is my Silverado cruise control not working?

Several things can cause cruise control not working on 2008 Silverado, 2009 Silverado LTZ, and 2007 Silverado 4x4 5.3 automatic. 

Sometimes this is a permanent problem, but it is an intermediate cruise issue in most cases, which makes it even more annoying. It works for a few miles (or even a few hundred miles) and then suddenly disengage and stop working at all.

Many people do their own research and conclude it to be the problem with the cruise switch on the steering wheel. However, the truth is this is very rarely the case.

So let's dive right in.

I replaced the faulty switch on the brake pedal and it solved the cruise control problem

A faulty brake light switch can cause the cruise control to think the brake pedal is activated.

So as a first step, let's diagnose to see if this applies to your case:

• Does the cruise control disengage when you hit a bump in the road or tap the side of the brake pedal?
• When the problem occurs, press on the set button again, and at the same time kick the brake pedal a couple of times to see if the cruise ctrl will engage again? It should start to work if you tap the brake several times while tapping the set cruise button.
• Also, you can try to put your toe under the brake pedal and lift slightly to see if your cruise control will stay engaged?
• The brake lights do not come on until the brake pedal is nearly all the way down?

If the answer is yes to all or most questions listed, you probably need to take a deeper look into the brake light sensor switch connected with the brake pedal.

The switch can easily get some dirt in it, and the problem occurs because it does not fully release. The best thing would be to pull the old switch apart and check if the cruise side contacts are fused together? If that is the case, then the brake switch deactivation was always on - causing the cruise control to disengage. If the contacts are not fused but only dirty, then you can easily restore the cruise control function. All you need to do is remove the brake light sensor switch, clean the contacts with an electrical cleaner, and then reassemble.

For those lucky enough, a few simple kicks at the brake pedal and letting it fly back up clears up the sticky switch, and the cruise will work again for some time.  If the switch is clearly damaged, worn out, too dirty, or beyond repair, I guess it's time to change out that switch. Depending on the vehicle model and year, the part numbers can be A/C Delco# D1586H, GM# 15861245, GM Part #25981009, or AC Delco part # D1539J.

You can order it online or pick up the brake light switch at the local parts store for $18 or 20 bucks max.

Before ordering the part, please research thoroughly the exact part number that would be compatible with your car make, model, and year. 

Once you got a spare part, it is a very simple fix - all you need is a 10mm wrench and a small screwdriver to pry the clip apart. So I suggest that you skip the dealership and go DIY if your cruise is out!

Remove the 10mm bolt and the clip. The clip is tricky because it slides up in order to remove it. Unplug the switch, remove it, and replace it in the opposite order. It takes about 5-10 minutes of actual work time to replace it and finally have the cruise control fixed. It will help if you have a headlamp to give a little extra light without holding a flashlight in your teeth.

The hardest thing here is bending to get under the steering wheel, but it is definitely an easy fix.

I replaced the switch on the brake pedal and the cruise control still doesn't work.

If this is your case, then there are only a few things left to check and try before going to the dealership.

• Check for a blown fuse or burned-out brake light. If the brake lights are fine, check the trailer brakes (if you have one).
• Rusty tail light sockets could cause it as well.
• The vehicle speed sensor can stop the cruise from working, so check this one as well.
• The brake pedal switch is also a sensor and not just an on/off switch, so it needs to be calibrated and adjusted in some cases. How to do it: Replace the brake switch first, then adjust it properly. Once you get it installed, press the brake pedal down and pull the small lever on the bottom edge of the switch all the way back. Release the pedal, and you're done.
• The cruise control switch can be faulty as well. To be sure, check the wires at the end of the harness as they can be broken somewhere in the middle due to the tilting action of the column over the past years.
• No codes are coming up? Reread the fault codes from the car ECU to see if they are throwing the code P0573 Brake Switch Circuit "A" High.

Where is the cruise control fuse on a 2008 Chevy Silverado?

Usually, there are no fuses labeled for the cruise in the fusebox. However, on some versions of Silverado you could find it under the hood, fuse box number 43 - fuse Misc/IGN. Check if the fuse appears good or not. Do check out for other faulty fuses and replace them if found.

I have a 07 2500hd classic, LBZ motor. The cruise control started blowing the fuse put a new one in and it popped as soon as I tried to use it. All the internet mechanics said it was the module in the steering column so I replaced it. The first time I t it on pop went the fuse.. now I don’t know if this anything to do with it but since I put in the new module the batteries will not hold a charge and they are not old batteries.. I am normally good with electrical work but this one has me buffaloed An help would be appreciated.  

My cruise is out on my 2006. Havent looked into it but I am curious about the answers you get.

Both underhood fuse blocks are located in the engine compartment, on the passenger’s side of the vehicle. To access the fuse blocks, gently squeeze both sides of the cover to unlatch the tabs at the top. Then, unsnap both attachments at the bottom and remove the cover.

Cruise Control not working

I just purchased a 2008 3500HD and the CC is not working. I saw the green dash light blink once, but it doesn't work. I do have it turned on via the steering wheel on/off button but the SET doesn't work. Any ideas? PS. Mods, if this is not the right forum I'm sorry, not sure if it went here or electronics.  

Not sure but if there is a code it may not work. Go have it scan for codes even if the CEL is not on. Also check to make sure brake lights are not on. Brian  

Lube your brake lever. Sometimes it doesn't go all the way up and deactivate the brake light switch. If that don't work, you have other issues.

If just purchased I be taking it back to the dealer to fix. Did you have it checked to see if a tuner had been used on it before you bought it? Brian  

Bad Switch Took the truck to the dealer today. They diagnosed the problem as a bad brake switch. Cost me about $100 to get it fixed. All is fine now.

Cruise control not working

I have a 2008 GMC Sierra 1500 4.8L 4x4. My cruise control isn't working. The light on the steering wheel controls comes on but the green light does not and the cruise will not engage. I have checked the fuses and all the fuses are still good. All three of my brake lights are working along with my turn signals. I replaced the brake light switch after reading some forums on here. Is there a certain way it is suppose to be installed? I replaced it the same way the other switch was in there. But it still isn't working so I have no idea. I have checked the connector before attaching to the brake light switch and there didn't seem to be anything wrong with it or the wires. Can someone please help? I don't really want to take it to the dealership. Thank you in advance! Ricky  

Where did you get the replacement switch? I don't trust electrical parts from the big box parts houses. I've had bad parts out of the box from them.  

I got the replacement switch from oreilly's auto parts. And I bought it from an in town store instead of oreilly's online in case of damaged parts.  

I'd try a factory part......  

Ok I try anything. Do you think it could be anything with the steering wheel controls? Like a loose wire on the set button? I have no idea is why I'm asking!  

Does anyone have another idea other than a factory part? I'll try and order one tomorrow.  

Wish there was more advice I could give, but the factory GM switch just might do the trick. It worked for me as soon as I installed it in my 08 Sierra. Just in case, here's the part number ACDelco D1586H. Good luck.  

The same problem plagued me. Tried all the same things, checked the wires and connectors from the brake pedal switch all the way to the throttle body. After replacing the brake pedal switch for the second time and fooling around with the wiring it started working again, but... I have to press the set button very quickly twice in a row for it to work.

Ok I got the ac delco switch and got it installed and still no cruise. This is the third switch. Any ideas?  

It is time to get a wiring diagram and check the circuit.  

I have the same issue with my 09. I'm assuming it's gonna be a bad switch ...contact or other stupid gm error. Hopefully you find a fix  

Had this same problem in another truck of mine. Try pulling back on the brake pedal with your foot before you set the cruise and see if it works. And also if your remote start is still working then it's not the brake pedal switch.  

Time to get a multimeter and schematic and start troubleshooting.

I would take the time to pull and check all the fuses inside and under the hood. I had this happen on my 2011 and I can't remember which fuse it was but I never would've thought it was the one I replaced that fixed.  

This just started happening to me as well - 2008 Silverado 1500 ltz. light on steering wheel switch illuminates, but no indicator on dash and no cruise.....  

Make sure all bulbs are working in the High mount Brake light. [Back of cab] All bulbs have to light for cruise to work. Hope this will fix it. Did on my 05 crew cab.  

Found 2 bad bulbs in high mount brake light assy, but now no indicator that shows cruise is on..... weird  

The high mount brake is working Right. installed the same type of bulbs. works off the load of the bulbs not light that's way they have to be same type bulb  

I replaced my brake light switch with a brand new one from advance auto and had the same issue I started with. Carried it to a friends shop to make sure I wasn't a complete idiot and had actually put it on right, which he confirmed (that it was on right, not that I'm an idiot). Went back and got another switch and it was fixed. My brake lights were staying on though so a brake light switch probably isn't the problem in your case.  

have the same problem in 2008 gmc....... both of my high mount bulbs (3rd brakelamp) were burned out. replaced them with bulb # 921 from oreilly auto parts = $5. Cruise still not working, but light on the switch is on. guess I will try a new brakelight switch.  

Is there Two switches one for brake light and one for cruise or is it a two in one switch. Try unplugging the switch and see if it works. Remember you'll have to shut of Cruise manually if it works or just put a jumper across the wire plug term.

Is there a cruise control light on the dash of a 2000 Silverado 1500 that says when it's on? My CC isn't working either and I have no clue where to even begin troubleshooting it. Any ideas or suggestions greatly appreciated.
