Sonoma Zipline Adventures is nestled near the coast of Northern California approximately 30 minutes west of Santa Rosa.    This guided eco-adventure includes multiple zip lines, sky bridges, and rappels as well as other unique elements.

Sonoma Zipline Adventures offers two unique courses – the Classic Course and the Challenger Course – rain or shine the entire year.   Additionally, Night Flights are offered on the Classic Course.

Upon arrival, each guest is welcomed by a member of the staff in our Welcome Center, driven up the mountain to our home base.   There guest are fitted with safety equipment and given a short training orientation and ground school.   Upon successful completion of ground school the guests are driven to starting platform when the canopy tour begins.   Throughout the tour, guests will be immersed in the unparalleled beauty of the world famous California Coastal Redwoods.

Each course begins with panoramic forest views and quickly enters the canopy of the Redwoods to reveal deep ravines, and high above the forest floor.   The trained guides share interesting facts and history of the forest while encouraging each guest along the way.

The Classic Course was completed in July, 2010 and has seven zip lines, two sky bridges, a majestic spiral staircase, and a rappel back to the forest floor.   The longest zip line is approximately 800 feet.   For the night flights, each guest is outfitted with special equipment to enjoy the experience.

The Challenger Course was completed in September, 2015 and has been appropriately named because it is very “challenging.”   The Challenger Course include three zip lines, four sky bridges, and an exciting option to return to the forest floor – a free-fall rappel!   The longest zip line on The Challenger Course is approximately 1,500 feet.

California Through My Lens

Ziplining in the Redwoods with Sonoma Canopy Tours

Disclosure: This experience was provided free of charge; all opinions are my own.

When you visit Santa Rosa and you hear about a ziplining course that takes you through a redwood forest, you can help but do it, right? My wife and I took the 40-minute drive from our hotel in Santa Rosa on an early fall morning and got there just in time for our 2.5-hour adventure on the classic course. It was a ton of fun and a top-notch organization. Here is all the information so you can do it yourself.

  • Book Here (in advance)
  • Takes about 2.5 hours
  • 250-pound weight limit
  • Location: 6250 Bohemian Hwy, Occidental, CA 95465

Getting There

armstrong-redwoods-1

The tour area is located off Bohemian Highway in the town of Occidental. When you book a tour, they will send you directions as they recommend you do not use Google Maps.

zipline-santa-rosa-2

After checking in for our tour in the parking lot, we waited for the truck used to shuttle our group up to the tour area. When we got off the shuttle, they have a store, bathrooms, and a lot of plaques with information about the course and the forest. The rest of our group (7 people) arrived shortly after, and our guides Nick and Shaina got us into our harnesses and gloves.

zipline-santa-rosa-1

There is a short practice zip here that everyone has to go on. This 15-foot zip gets you used to the way you will be breaking and what it is like if you don’t make it entirely to the end of the zip line while up on the course. I appreciated this as it was an excellent way to get accustomed to the feel of the zip before being high in the air.

zip trip santa rosa

After loading up in another truck, we made it to the top of the area where we were to start our course.

zip trip santa rosa

The first few zips are relatively short, and they get you accustomed to the process you will be taking. This course has seven zips, getting progressively longer as you proceed.

zipline-santa-rosa-3

The second and third zips take you into small platforms that are high off the ground, and that sway a little making them pretty scary if you don’t like heights.

zip trip santa rosa

The fourth is the longest of the course, and you can’t even see the end from where you start; it is incredible. You go fast on this zip, and it’s a total rush.

zip trip santa rosa

The zips continue along like this until you get to the photo zip. This small zip line takes your photo so you can pose as Amie did in the below picture.

zipline-santa-rosa-19

From here, you will head up the hanging spiral staircase, which is a unique addition to the course.

zipline-santa-rosa-20

Once you get to the top, you will start one of two sky bridges. Both of these bridges are a lot of fun, and they both give you a little rush as they bend and move when you walk across them.

zipline-santa-rosa-6

They are not too scary though, and you can hold on the entire time.

zip trip santa rosa

Upon reaching the end of the bridges, you will be at the last zip line, which takes you to the scariest part of the course, the rappel.

zipline-santa-rosa-11

The rappel is from a platform about 60 feet in the air; it is an automated rappel, so you just have to get over the edge, and it lowers you down. I found it to be nerve-racking as I approached it, then totally fine as I was being lowered down. Once you make it to the flat ground again, you will be able to breathe a sigh of relief and ride out the high you feel from the zip line course.

All in all, this is a fantastic way to spend an adventurous half-day in the Santa Rosa area, and I highly recommend you give it a try. Let me know what you think in the comments below.

Top Things to Do in Santa Rosa

Unusual things to do in santa rosa, safety in santa rosa, things to do in santa rosa at night, where to stay in santa rosa – historic district, romantic things to do in santa rosa, best free things to do in santa rosa, best things to do in santa rosa with kids, day trips from santa rosa, 3 day santa rosa itinerary, faq on things to do in santa rosa.

From Vineyards to museums, let’s begin by looking at the top things to do in Santa Rosa shall we?

1. Drink Napa Valley Wine

Napa Valley, Santa Rosa, California

The Broke Backpacker is supported by you . Clicking through our links may earn us a small affiliate commission, and that's what allows us to keep producing free content 🙂 Learn more .

Though Santa Rosa is the main town in California’s famous wine county, it’s the nearby Napa Valley that gets a lot of the fame and fortune. However, using Santa Rosa as a base, it’s possible to visit as much of the nearby wineries and vineyards all you want.

Definitely one of the most quintessential things to do Santa Rosa, taking a trip to Napa means being able to taste the best wines going at source. Some notable vine yards are places like Domaine Chandon, Frog’s Leap Winery and Castello di Amorosa, to name a few. They are also set in some pretty beautiful natural surroundings too. Taking a few vineyard tours is definitely THE thing to do in Santa Rosa.

2. Check out the Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center

Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center, Santa Rosa, California

Dedicated to “Peanuts” comic magazine creator Charles M. Schulz, the Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center is one of the best things to do in Santa Rosa if you’re a fan of Snoopy and Charlie Brown. Though he wasn’t born in Santa Rosa, it’s here where Schulz passed away in 2000.

At the museum, you’ll get to see some original “Peanuts” strips, other drawings and artwork by Shultz, as well as some very selfie-able statuettes and scenes that you can hop into for Instagrammable comic-based goodness. One of the more off the beaten track things to do in Santa Rosa – and well worth it, too.

Santa Rosa Historic District

Historic District

The best place to stay in Santa Rosa? That has to be the Historic District. Not only is this the most charming area of town, it also happens to be where you’re going to find most of the best places to eat and drink, too.

  • Start your day at the vintage feeling Brew Coffee and Beer House
  • Go and browse the art collections at Annex Galleries
  • Check out the Comstock House

3. Make some time for the Museum of Sonoma County

To learn more about the past of Santa Rosa and its surrounding area, we would recommend heading straight for the Museum of Sonoma County. The museum is located in Downtown Santa Rosa, and set inside a cute, historic post office dating back to 1910. This interesting museum documents the history of the area and even plays host to displays of work from local artists.

With rotating artworks on show, a sculpture garden, and a ton of cultural heritage to soak up, visiting the Museum of Sonoma County is easily one of the most unmissable things to do in Santa Rosa. Tip: It’s open from 11am to 5pm, making it the perfect spot for an afternoon sojourn.

4. Wander around the Railroad Square Historic District

Railroad Square Historic District, Santa Rosa, California

For some history in Santa Rosa that isn’t inside a museum, you should make sure you spend some time wandering around the Railroad Square Historic District. It’s located in Downtown and features shops and other beautifully restored antique buildings from the late 1800s – and exploring it (compact though it may be) is one of the most fun, artsy things to do in Santa Rosa.

There are a lot of culturally significant structures that were built here between 1888 and 1923; for one example, there are a lot of brick buildings built by stonemasons from Northern Italy (these survived the earthquake of 1906). It’s now a hub of the city, with hotels, places to eat and drink, thrift stores – all that sort of stuff.

5. Eat some fresh oysters

Hog Island Oyster Company, Santa Rosa, California

Fresh oysters at inland California? Well, not necessarily, but if you are hankering for some fresh oysters and you’re looking for some more unusual things to do in Santa Rosa, head out towards Hog Island Oyster Company.

There’s not much to this place, but then again: there doesn’t have to be. There’s a BBQ area, a deck, and a little shack serving up oysters, but it’s the amazing scenery that does the talking here. Of course, the delicious oysters also have a few things to say. Basically, if you’re a fan of oysters, you should make it your mission to seek out this place – it’s dreamy.

6. Hit up the best breweries around

Sonoma County Brewery Bike Tour in Santa Rosa, California

Santa Rosa may be famous for its wine, that much we all know, but there’s another alcoholic tipple that’s pretty popular in these parts and that is beer. There’s a pretty healthy craft beer scene going on here, so if you’re a beer fan one of the best things to do in Santa Rosa for you would be hitting up some of the breweries in the area.

You can stop off at HopMonk Tavern for some tastings, set in a 100 year old building in nearby Sebastopol. Then you can head to the Russian River Brewing Company for barrel-aged beer. Oh, you can also check out the independent Santa Rosa Ale Works , with some interesting beers on offer.

Wanna know how to pack like a pro? Well for a start you need the right gear….

These are packing cubes for the globetrotters and compression sacks for the  real adventurers – these babies are a traveller’s best kept secret. They organise yo’ packing and minimise volume too so you can pack MORE.

Or, y’know… you can stick to just chucking it all in your backpack…

OK once you’ve seen enough vineyards what else is there to do here? We will show you some of the more unusual things to do in Santa Rosa.

7. Zipline through the canopy

Forest Flight in Santa Rosa, California

For one of the more adventurous things to do in Santa Rosa, it’s time to take yourself to one of California’s iconic giant redwood forests in the surrounding Sonoma County. It’s not just the amazing trees you’ll get to see, however: it’s getting to go on a zipline through it all!

Located at the Forest Flight, you won’t need any experience to try this whatsoever, but it is pretty high up, is pretty adrenaline pumping and makes for an amazing zipline course. You’ll get to fly over 200 feet over rocky ravines and through the giant trees themselves. It’s not any old ziplining course, but honestly one of the best we’ve seen.

8. Take a snap with the mad Cyclisk Tower

The brainchild of Mark Grieve and Ilana Spector, the Cyclisk Tower is 10,000 pounds of monolithic, bicycle-based artwork. A homage to the Washington Monument (in Washington), this 65 foot obelisk is made out of 340 recycled parts of bicycles – hence the name, a portmanteau of “bicycle” and “obelisk”.

Costing over half a million dollars, it’s a pretty wacky piece of public art. It’s a bizarre thing to find out here in wine country and is definitely one of the more unusual things to do in Santa Rosa.

9. Find out about flesh-eating plants at California Carnivores

California Carnivores

At California Carnivores you’ll find the largest collection of carnivorous plants in the whole of the United States. Don’t worry, they don’t eat humans, only insects.

Located in nearby Sebastopol, making a very easy day trip from Santa Rosa (though it really is close) is worth it for this unusual collection of plants. It’s been open since 1969 and features some of the rarest carnivorous plants in the world, from pitcher plants to venus fly traps and weirder still. You can even buy some flesh-eating plant memorabilia – T-shirt, anyone?

Santa Rosa is a very gentrified city and is pretty safe. This is especially true  around the Historic District and other well-touristed areas, you’ll be totally fine.

However, that doesn’t mean there is no crime at all. Like any urban area, it’s a good idea to pay attention to basic rules of thumb: not leaving valuables on display in your car, parking in well-lit places, and not walking around by yourself at night in remote areas, or along dark, deserted roads.

The natural world can be dangerous: forest fires can affect California in a big way. As of November 2019, Kincade Fire is engulfing countryside areas in Sonoma County. Only use well-trodden trails in state parks, take plenty of water, tell people where you’re going, be prepared and check the weather forecast before you go so you know what to expect. It’s not a good idea to hike in extreme heat.

In general, however, you’ll be fine in Santa Rosa – just keep your common sense in mind. Don’t drink and drive.

Stash your cash safely with this money belt. It will keep your valuables safely concealed, no matter where you go.

It looks exactly like a normal belt  except for a SECRET interior pocket perfectly designed to hide a wad of cash, a passport photocopy or anything else you may wish to hide. Never get caught with your pants down again! (Unless you want to…)

Santa Rosa has a pretty lively night-time scene with bars, restaurants and theatres. Let’s take a look at some of the best things to do in Santa Rosa at night shall we?

10. Catch a show at the 6th Street Playhouse

Without doubt one of the best things to do in Santa Rosa at night is a visi the very cool 6th Street Playhouse to enjoy a show. It’s a great venue to catch a show with great prices to boot, meaning you won’t have to shell out loads of your precious budget to have the pleasure.

There are a whole load of plays and shows put on here (over 200 performances every year), from comedies and dramas to outright musicals, and even a fine arts gallery. So if you’re looking for cool things to do in Santa Rosa, this is a great option. Tip: Check the schedule (and buy tickets) online.

11. Go to a painting party

Painting party in Santa Rosa, California

If you’re in Santa Rosa as a solo traveller and you feel like getting to know your fellow humans, then try this. An evening of painting madness (well, not madness – more like fun) put on by the folks at Yaymaker will be one of the best things to do in Santa Rosa at night.

Taking place at the Santa Rosa event space Epicenter, at Yaymaker you’ll get to socialise with locals and other independent travellers as you paint your very own canvas and have a glass of wine or two (you know, for inspiration). You’ll get to take your masterpiece home with you, too, of course. Check online for availability .

Best Airbnb in Santa Rosa –  A Socially Active and Positive Room

A Socially Active and Positive Room Airbnb in Santa Rosa, California

If you’re looking for somewhere to stay in town that’s affordable and a fun place to stay, look no further than this top Airbnb in Santa Rosa. Consisting of a room in an old Victorian house, shared with occupants in their 20s and 30s, here you’ll find student vibes and a laid back atmosphere. The location is great too: simply stroll to basically anywhere in the Historic District and Downtown.

Best Hotel in Santa Rosa –  Hotel Azura

Hotel Azura, Santa Rosa, California

An awesome place to stay in Santa Rosa if you’re looking for a central location to base yourself in the centre of the city, Hotel Azura is set in a remodelled motel. This place features big, comfortable beds, in-room espresso machines and a good level of cleanliness. Being in town as an independent traveller on a budget, however, you’ll enjoy the fact (as we do) that there’s a free breakfast on offer here!

With it’s chic bars. wine picnics and lush scenery, Santa Rosa is a great place for a couples getaway. Let’s run through some of the most romantic things to do in Santa Rosa.

12. Drink wine and go hiking

HIking in Napa Valley

One of the absolute best of the romantic things to do in Santa Rosa is to take a wine flavoured hike. The Mediterranean landscapes are dotted with vine yards so you can take off for a hike into the hills stopping off whenever you feel your thirst calling.

With Santa Rosa more of a base for all things wine-related, it’s the nearby Napa Valley where the nature really comes to life and makes this wine-producing region as beautiful as it is. Hop in a cab, head on over to Napa, and start hiking along the valley, choosing from any number of wineries to hit up as you go.

Easy. Or you can join a tour.

13. Picnic in the countryside

Wine tour in Santa Rosa, California

If you don’t feel like hiking, don’t worry: there’s another great thing to do in Santa Rosa for couples that doesn’t necessarily involve moving your legs – not much, anyway. It’s possible to experience nature without having to go trekking along trails – and that will be through the magic of picnicking.

Pack yourself a picnic and head for the hills. Don’t skimp on the supplies and head to Napa where you can pick up artisanal cheeses and a bottle of wine; there are also plenty of lovely picnic spots in Napa so don’t miss out. Or if you don’t feel like planning anything, head to a winery and reserve a picnic area.

Santa Rosa isn’t exactly a cheap place to visit. Don’t worry though, there are some free things to do in Santa Rosa for when your wallet empties.

14. Visit the Luther Burbank Home and Gardens

Luther Burbank Home and Gardens, Santa Rosa, California

This beautiful spot is the place where you’ll find the home of horticulturalist Luther Burbank, who lived and worked, cross-breeding all sorts of species of fruit (amongst other things), in Santa Rosa for over 50 years. Visiting his supremely picturesque house, which once received such guests as Thomas Edison and Henry Ford – is one of the more hidden, off the beaten track things to do in Santa Rosa.

The house, built in Greek Revival style in 1875, costs money to explore, but the gardens themselves are free of charge to wander around. In fact, since it’s open from 8am onwards, this makes for a good early morning or post-breakfast stroll. A serene and very charming spot.

15. Take a hike Trione-Annadel State Park

Trione-Annadel State Park, Santa Rosa, California

For a less boozy escape into nature, why not head on over to Trione-Annadel State Park?

Located on the edge of the Sonoma Valley, there are miles upon miles of trails to explore in this very scenic and mountainous location. It’s good for hiking, biking, or strolling one of the easier trails located here. Tip: It’s one of the best things to do in Santa Rosa in spring when there will be wildflowers in bloom all over the place.

Books to Read in Santa Rosa

Sometimes a Great Notion – A tale of a hardheaded Oregonian logging family that goes on strike, leading the town to drama and tragedy. Written by PNW legend, Ken Kesey.

Walden – The transcendental masterpiece by Henry David Thoreau that helped modern Americans rediscover nature and her beauty.

To Have and To Have Not – A family man gets involved with the drug smuggling business in the Key West and ends up in a strange affair. Written by the great Ernest Hemingway.

Visitors to Santa Rosa do tend to be a bit older. If you are headed here with kids, then don’t worry though, the vineyards are off limits but there are plenty more things to do with kids.

17. Spend some time at Sugarloaf Ridge State Park

Sugarloaf Ridge State Park, Santa Rosa, California

If you want some time out with your family when you’re visiting Santa Rosa, take a visit to Sugarloaf Ridge State Park. It’s one of the coolest things to do in Santa Rosa with kids in tow, not just because they’re going to be able to run riot on the trails, but because this place also happens to be home to the Robert Ferguson Observatory.

With several telescopes in operation, it’s a cool place to visit. Come to visit at night and take advantage of the clear night sky of the Sugarloaf Ridge, or you can even try out some solar viewing (yes, that’s a thing) during the day. There are even night sky classes to take here. Perfect for children aged any age.

18. Kayak on the Russian River

Russian River in Santa Rosa, California

For one of the best things to do in Santa Rosa with kids, we would recommend hitting up the Russian River. Not just walking alongside it or driving up to have a look at it, but actually getting out onto it with a kayak for a truly memorable experience.

Heading to the seaside town of Jenner, where the Russian River meets the Pacific Ocean, you’ll get access to a gentler portion of the river, making it ideal for families with children. There’s a good reason to head out on a kayak : you and your kids will get to see harbour seals, osprey and even river otters, amongst other things. Super fun!

Santa Rosa is definitely a good place to base yourself if you’re thinking of exploring the Wine Region in further detail. Napa, as nice as it is, can really eat into your budget. So now that you’ve got a load of things to do  in  Santa Rosa itself, it’s time to look further afield. To start you off on your Sonoma County adventure, we’re sharing a couple of our favourite day trips from Santa Rosa with you.

Hop over to San Francisco

Golden Gate Bridge San Francisco

The metropolis of San Francisco is just a stone’s throw from Santa Rosa. You can get a bus there (the number 101) which takes just over two hours, or you could drive, for around an hour. Once you’re in San Francisco, well, the world’s your oyster. There are literally so many things to do in San Francisco that you won’t have time to pack it all into one day – so we’d recommend just hitting up the highlights.

Go and explore the Mission District and grab some amazing Mexican food to keep you going. You can ride the trolley to get around. You can check out Chinatown, go and grab some seafood at Fisherman’s Wharf (one of the most popular things to do in San Francisco), take a boat trip to Alcatraz, and marvel at the skyscrapers of the Financial District. There’s basically a load of stuff going on here!

Spend the day in Bodega Bay

Bodega Bay, California

If the thought of going to such a sprawling urban area as San Francisco isn’t quite your thing, then instead you can opt for a much more chilled out experience at Bodega Bay. Just a half an hour away by car or around 45 minutes on the number 95, you’ll be glad that you took the trip here – not only is it simple, but once you’re there the stunning, dramatic coastline and beautiful beaches will have you in awe.

Spend a day hitting up the small local communities of Bodega Bay, exploring the historic harbour, or simply pitching up on one of the wild beaches and spending the day on the sand. The Bodega Trail is a good route for anybody with a keen interest in hiking – what with the astounding views, you’re going to love strolling along the coast here. Make sure to have a crab sandwich at Spud Point Crab Company.

One of the hardest parts about planning a trip to go anywhere isn’t necessarily finding stuff to do – it’s working out how to fit it all in. Because we know how much of a pain that can be, we have decided to help you out. We’re sharing a rough but very doable 3 day Santa Rosa itinerary to give you an idea of how your schedule could look and to help your time in wine country go as smoothly as can be.

Day 1 – Wining and Dining in Santa Rosa

Your first day in Santa Rosa should start with a good breakfast, naturally. Stop off at Omelette Express for amazing, eggy omelettes (obviously) before embarking on an early morning hike. Make the 15 minute drive to  Trione-Annadel State Park – or a 25 minute journey on the number 34 bus. Spend a couple of hours out in this beautiful natural spot, hiking and working up an appetite.

Mountain in Santa Rosa, California

Now it’s time to go and explore some wineries. The nearby  Napa Valley   is pretty much the perfect place for this; hit up as many vineyards and wineries as you see fit and stop off for lunch at one of them (not exactly cheap, but certainly worth it). Spend a long, lazy afternoon, sipping all the wine, sampling all the food. Tip: If you don’t want to eat at the winery, pack yourself a picnic.

It’s around a 45 minute drive back into Downtown Santa Rosa from Napa Valley. It’s time to sample some more wine – if you feel like it, that is – at an evening painting class at  Epicenter . For some dinner later on in the evening, after you’ve put your painterly prowess to paper (or canvas), head on over to the nearby  Westside Grill  for low-key eats and drinks.

Day 2 – Step Back in Time in Santa Rosa

Day number two in Santa Rosa begins with a trip to the  Museum of Sonoma County . Open from 11am, this is a perfect place to learn about the history of the area, how wine came to be so important, and some of the most important figures of the region. Before all that though, head for breakfast or brunch at the nearby Naked Pig  – a very popular spot, and rightly so: it’s delicious.

Scenery in Santa Rosa, California

From here the  Luther Burbank Home and Gardens  is just a 14 minute walk away. Strolling around the pretty gardens here and marvelling at the charming, 130-ish year old house. Lunch can be had at  Dirk’s Parkside Cafe , which is right next to the historic home and its lovely gardens. Slowly make your way towards  6th Street Playhouse  and catch an early evening show.

Make sure to check out the schedule online first to make sure you’re seeing something you actually feel like seeing though! Follow up the fun show (or have a pre-drink before the show) at  Jackson’s Bar and Oven . Alternatively, you could hit up Toad in the Hole , a British style pub where you can choose from a selection of hearty eats and plenty to drink.

Day 3 – Stroll the Streets of Santa Rosa

Start off in the  Historic District  with a pastry and a delicious cup of coffee at  Flying Goat Coffee . Walk around the  Railroad Square Historic District , stopping to duck in and out of all the different antique shops, thrift stores and the wonderfully restored antique buildings; the historic Hotel La Rosa is a cool place to check out, for example.

Afterwards, it will be time to pay a visit to the Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center . (Take the number 44 bus for 27 minutes or simply drive for 6 minutes and you’ll be there.) Enjoy time with all your “Peanuts” pals at the museum, being sure to do a spot of shopping in the gift shop, before grabbing some lunch at Mac’s Deli & Cafe . It’s an 8 minute drive but this local institution is worth it.

Following your lovely lunch, it’s a good idea to stroll to your next destination – the  Cyclisk Tower . There isn’t much parking and besides, walking off lunch is a good idea. Take some snaps. Spend your afternoon perusing the breweries of the area – 3rd Street Ale Works , for example, or  Russian River Brewing Company – and merge it into the evening, chowing down on burgers and tasting good beers.

Don’t forget your travel insurance for Santa Rosa

Three Different Road Trips Through Northern California to the Russian River

It’s less than two hours from the San Francisco Bay Area to the Russian River in west Sonoma County, but why race up there when you could explore for a whole day? One of the things that we have come to love about the Russian River area is that vacation wonderland is so close, and most importantly, doesn’t include any travel on Interstate 80. A traffic jam from the bay area is no way to start a relaxing vacation or enjoy a road trip. Fortunately the only way to the Russian River area is through gorgeous countryside.

Do you want to take some extra time to see the best sights while on your way to Russian River? Do you like to visit the coast, check out farms, and eat really good food? Then we have 3 action packed itineraries full of amazing eye candy and excursions for you to choose from when you are traveling from the San Francisco area to the Russian River. We have also made a google map to help you with your trip planning.

Coastal Route starting at the Golden Gate Bridge

This route takes you north from the Golden Gate Bridge along the coasts of Marin and Sonoma Counties and provides striking panoramic views of the ocean and rolling hills along the coastline.

Site 1: Golden Gate Bridge

If you start in the morning and intend to take all day then your first stop can be the Golden Gate Bridge itself. You can either park at the lot on the San Francisco side and walk across the bridge to enjoy the views, or you can start in San Francisco and drive across the bridge then immediately exit at the North Vista Point. Beware, this exit is often closed on weekends in an effort to calm traffic on the bridge. If using Google Maps, this vista point is called the Golden Gate Bridge View Vista Point . It is guaranteed to be breezy so bring your wind breaker, your camera, and have a nice stroll. If you are lucky you will see seals and sea lions swimming in the water or maybe a ship will be passing under you. And of course you will enjoy the beautiful views of San Francisco.

Site 2: Muir Woods National Monument

It takes about 30 minutes to drive to Muir Woods National Monument from the Golden Gate Bridge View Vista Point. Advance Reservations for parking are required and they must be made online at this web site . While at Muir Woods you can take the classic out and back walk in the main grove of trees, about half of which is on a well maintained boardwalk and the other half is on a well maintained trail. Plan for this visit to take you about 1-2 hours. If you get hungry while you are at Muir Woods, stop in at the park cafe for the grilled cheese; its worth every calorie!

After Muir Woods you can drive west on the Panoramic Highway to Stinson Beach and then on to Jenner before you make your way inland toward the Russian River Resort Area. Pick 1 or 2 of the following options.

Option 3: stinson beach.

Stinson beach is a nice long crescent shaped beach with soft fine sand. It’s usually chilly at Stinson Beach thanks to the coastal fog, but when it is hot then it is transformed into a summer beach wonderland! Its a lovely beach for walking, playing, and sunbathing. If you need a refresher after the beach then you can easily access a coffee shop, snack bar, and a restaurant simply by walking over a little foot bridge from the parking lot. There is also a mini park with a play structure that the kids can enjoy.

Option 4: Point Reyes National Seashore

The main attraction at Point Reyes National Seashore is the lighthouse on the end of a peninsula that is 10 miles out into the ocean. To visit the lighthouse you will turn left into onto Sir Francis Drake Boulevard from the town of Point Reyes Station and drive for about 40 minutes. During the wintertime this area is very active with wildlife, most notably elephant seals and migrating gray whales.

Option 5: Bodega Bay

Bodega Bay is well known for its seafood markets, restaurants, and spectacular views. Our favorite is the deliciously herby clam chowder at Spud Point Crab Company . Sit at the outside picnic tables or take your chowder over to Bodega Head and get a quick stroll in after. If you didn’t stop at Point Reyes to see the whales, then you could see whales here at Bodega Head. You can also enjoy the seabirds and other abundant wildlife.

Option 6: Sonoma Coast State Beach

Jenner is where the Russian River empties into the ocean. If you are very lucky you will get to see the resident pair of bald eagles which do their hunting at Goat Rock Beach and the Russian River estuary. On this part of the Sonoma Coast you will see magnificent rock formations, a beautiful beach with a mix of sand and colorful stones, and plenty of weathered driftwood which is perfect for making forts. Seals tend to congregate on this beach so you will get a good view of them here. If you are looking to do a little hike in this area then you can read an article we wrote about the Kortum Trail . Be careful when visiting Sonoma County beaches on the ocean. They have dangerous surf, especially in the winter and are not good for a person of any age to swim at. There is one Sonoma Coast Beach that is safe, called Doran Beach . It is a safer beach because it is in the relatively calm Bodega Bay.

Option 7: Jenner, CA

There is a very unique restaurant with an equally unique view of the Russian River estuary and it is called Russian House #1. It was even featured on SF Eater ! This restaurant has no menu and no prices! When you are done eating you pay what you want. You will certainly eat something unique at this restaurant with interesting blends of spices. And my kids always enjoy eating outside with an overlook of the Russian River below!

So, back to the road trip! Once you are in Jenner, you are at the end of the Russian River! Hop onto Highway 116 which parallels the river and you will soon be to Monte Rio and then Guerneville. If staying at Lucky Bend Lookout then your drive will take 20 minutes from Jenner.

Rural Foodie Route

This route takes you through the rolling hills of western Marin and Sonoma Counties. Once you are no longer on the freeway the drive is peaceful and the scenery is bucolic. You will drive through a lot of ranch land and open space and will enjoy the horses, cows, and sheep along the way.  In the summer the hills will be golden with green oak trees here and there, and in the winter its green all over. Even though this route is quieter and more peaceful, there are plenty of places to stop along the way including lots of places to buy food products direct from the producers. As a foodie, this is a very important detail for me!

Site 1: Sausalito Fish Tacos

The first stop on this trip is the Golden Gate Bridge as described above. After you finish with the bridge, then stop at my favorite restaurant in Sausalito called Fish . When we go to Fish, we prefer to sit outside at the picnic tables so we can enjoy the harbor views. The food is fresh, sustainably caught seafood, but very casual. You can get some amazing fish tacos, fish and chips, and local beer and wine.

Site 2: Roy’s Redwood Preserve

Head north toward the town of Nicassio and keep an eye out for Roy’s Redwood Preserve in Woodacre. In this park bay trees and redwoods are the main attractions and George Lucas’  The Ewok Adventure  were filmed at this park.  The best trail at this park is the easy 2.4 mile Roys Redwood Loop Trail .

Site 3: Nicasio Valley Cheese

The next stop is for some local cheese! Nicasio Valley Cheese   has  their very own pasture raised cows and they make their organic cheese fresh every day. They make about a dozen types of cheeses in a variety of styles, so you are sure to find a cheese you will like. They even have a viewing window at their shop so you can peek into their production room. This unique local food you can only find in the northern half of the SF Bay Area is the best vacation souvenir you can get.

Site 4: Valley Ford Cheese

In the town of Valley Ford you will make your second cheese stop at Valley Ford Cheese and Creamery . At Valley Ford Cheese you will enjoy award-winning Italian style cheeses. Their signature cheese which is derived from a family recipe is called “Estero Gold” after the Estero Americano which runs adjacent to Valley Ford. For the kids, they offer their famous soft serve ice cream and other goodies at their store too.

Site 5: Hitchcock’s Birds

From Valley Ford you can continue north on Highway one for just a minute or two and then turn right on Bodega Highway. This road leads to the little town of Bodega (not to be mixed up with Bodega Bay) which is where the Hitchcock movie The Birds was filmed. The famous church scene is at Saint Teresa of Avila Church, which is on the right hand side as you drive through town.

Site 6: Wildflour Bakery

Continue five minutes on Bodega Highway to it’s ending at the Bohemian Highway then turn left at the town of Freestone where you will find the best bakery in West Sonoma County, called Wild Flour. They specialize in unique artisan breads that are so good you will want to eat the entire loaf! Our favorite bread is the sticky bun loaf. It is so sticky, gooey, and delicious but not too sweet. Watch out for operating hours. They close early and are only open Thursday through Sunday.

Site 7: Sonoma Canopy Tours Ziplines

At this point you are only about 20 minutes away from the Russian River itself! Continue north on the Bohemian Highway to the town of Monte Rio. The Bohemian Highway is a narrow winding road that cuts through a beautiful redwood forest. If you are looking for some excitement then you can go for a zip line adventure at Sonoma Canopy Tours . Once in Monte Rio, turn right on River Road/Highway 116 and continue 5 more minutes until you get to Lucky Bend Lookout and Guerneville.

zip trip santa rosa

Quickest Drive, But Still Beautiful

The quickest and most direct route to the Russian River area from the San Francisco is mostly freeway, but it is still a pretty drive. The first part of the drive will feature Marin County suburban scenery to the left and San Francisco Bay views to your right. Then when you are past the city of Novato, you start to see open space and ranch land. Soon you will be in Santa Rosa and that is where you will take the River Road exit. As soon as you are on River Road you are officially in the Russian River Resort Area and the scenery abruptly changes to vineyard views.

Site 1: Russian River Brewing

If you only have time for one stop along this route, we recommend that if you can budget an extra 20 minutes, you can make a stop in Santa Rosa at the famous Russian River Brewing Company for a growler of beer. It’s well worth it for a weekend’s supply of microbrew!

Site 2: River Road Wineries

If you get to the River Road exit by 3pm or earlier, it would be worth your while to stop at some wineries as you make your way along the river. Some wineries are located right on River Road or extremely close to River Road and they are Old World Winery , Fogline Vineyards , Martinelli Winery , Woodenhead Wines , and Joseph Swan Vineyards .

Have a great vacation!

Wow so many things to do! I would definitely be all about swimming in the lagoon and hitting up some breweries!

I am sure a hot air balloon ride over the vineyards will look amazing! It seems there are a lot of things to do in Santa Rosa. From yoga and meditation to beaches and wines, the place definitely looks like a winner.

When we go there, we will definitely check the Charles M. Schulz Museum. I hope it’s a dog-friendly place though. Our dog Snoopy wants to take picture with Snoopy. We want to check the Court House Square, too, and see if there are differences from court house squares in Texas.

Wow so many things to do in Santa Rosa. As I love adventures, I will surely be doing the zip lining and the hot air balloon. I have never been to California but I will get there someday as I have it high up on my list.

Thanks for these suggestions! I know Santa Rosa for its wineries. It’s nice to know that apart from visiting the wineries, a variety of different activities and unique tours can be done, too. I’m particularly interested in the Bodega Dunes Beach, Safari West, and Wednesday Night Market and Street Fair.

Northern California is beautiful with it’s vineyards and scenic drives. Santa Rosa looks such a beautiful place. Nice to know you were able to explore it fully.

We have visited a lot of California but have not yet been to Santa Rosa. We would definitely head there for the wine tasting. And who would pass on a cheese factory visit when wine is there too? Enjoying the outdoors by horse sounds like a great adventure. Or maybe a canoe ride on the Russian River. A new spot for us to visit on a return trip.

What a great list to Santa Rosa. I live pretty close so we go there occasionally. Mostly it has been to wineries. Russian River is beautiful and definitely recommend some activities by the river. Sleeping in that treehouse has been my dream.

I’ve never been to Santa Rosa, but I think it would be fun to go around and see the sculptures. I love art! Of course, the safari sounds like it would be enjoyable, too.

It was fun to walk up and down the street checking them all out. Pretty creative

TOP-RATED FERRY TRIPS TO CHANNEL ISLANDS NATIONAL PARK

icon

Island Packers is the only boat concessionaire approved to run trips to and from the islands within Channel Islands National Park. But it’s still a family owned company- with two children of the founder still operating the company! And even though you’re a captive audience, they still strive to provide an excellent experience - I’ve loved every trip I’ve taken with them!

Everything was smooth…Online tickets, picking up boarding passes, embarking…even the water. Found a table by the window and just enjoyed the view. Saw some sea lions on the way out chilling on a buoy. We landed at Scorpion Cove, and it was quite a day’s adventure. On the way back, I sat on the top deck. We saw so many dolphins, you just couldn’t count!

We cannot say enough great things about our experience with Island Packers! From the moment we checked in at the office, the staff was welcoming and friendly. The dock crew politely and efficiently instructed us how to load our camping gear and board the boat. The captain made special efforts to point out and share fun facts about the local marine life!

What a wonderful day! We went to Prisoners on Santa Cruz Island. Adam, the naturalist who was on the boat, led us on a hike toward Pelican Bay. He was so knowledgeable and thoughtful. We saw island scrub jays and even a couple of island foxes. Even the porta potties were clean. We saw dolphins on the ride out and a humpback whale on the return trip!

2 Mountain Brook teens injured in Walton County shark attacks identified

Walton County Florida officials are patrolling the shoreline and urging beachgoers to use caution while in the water following two shark attacks Friday that injured three females, including two teens from Mountain Brook.

Officials this morning posted an update following the attack. A woman and one of the teens were critically injured. One of the teens suffered minor injuries.

Mountain Brook City Manager Sam Gaston told AL.com that the two the teens who were injured are from Mountain Brook.

The teens were identified as Lulu Gribbin and McCray Faust by St. Luke’s Episcopal Church .

“On Sunday, June 9 at 4 p.m. we will gather in the Pavilion for prayer for Lulu and McCray, their families, and their recoveries. All are welcome,” the church posted on Instagram.

South Walton Fire District lifeguards have erected red and purple flags this morning as a visible warning of caution.

“It is important to us that beach patrons recognize and understand the risk of the open water as it pertains not just to surf hazards, but marine life,” officials wrote on the district’s X account this morning.

“Will have a boat in the Gulf and will be monitoring the shoreline throughout the day. We ask beachgoers to be aware of their surroundings and remember we are guests in the Gulf. Stay vigilant.”

The first attack occurred around 1:20 p.m. Friday when a 45-year old woman was bitten by a shark as she was swimming past near Water Sound Beach.

She suffered critical injuries on her hip and lower left arm and was airlifted to an area trauma hospital. HCA Florida Fort Walton-Destin Hospital told WJHG TV on Saturday that the woman is now in stable condition.

The second incident took place near Seacrest Beach less than two hours later and four miles east of the first incident. Officials said it involved two female patients who are about 15 years old. According to witnesses, the females were in waist deep water with a group of friends when the incident occurred.

Saturday morning, Walton County deputies reported spotting from a boat a 14-foot hammerhead shark east of South County Highway 395 in Santa Rosa Beach. They stressed that the sighting was not uncommon.

“We want to reiterate that sharks are always present in the Gulf,” the Walton County sheriff’s department said in a post on X. “Swimmers and beachgoers should be cautious when swimming and stay aware of their surroundings.”
