This short 2-day Zanzibar holiday package explores the tropical island of Zanzibar with a rich cultural and historical experience, along with its dazzling white beaches with azure waters. From Dar es Salaam, we take a flight or a speed boat in and out of Zanzibar .

Upon arrival at Zanzibar airport or harbor, we transfer to Stone Town the charming capital city of Zanzibar Island and begin our tour. Stone Town is the oldest city and the cultural heart of Zanzibar and has hardly changed in the last 200 years.

It is a place of winding alleys, bustling bazaars, mosques, and grand houses, whose original owners competed with each other over the extravagance of their dwellings, which is reflected in the beautiful brass-studded and carved wooden doors.

You will spend 2 days exploring Stone Town with its narrow streets, impressive architecture, bustling markets, and small but interesting museums. And in the company of a professional local guide, you will also see many reminders of Zanzibar’s historic involvement in the slave trade, abolished in these parts by the Sultan of Zanzibar in 1873.

Places that may be of interest to you include Emerson Spice House for views across Stone Town’s exotic skyline, and Capital Art Studio – a photography shop with treasures of the past and present portraits of the East African Island.

You could visit  Darajani Market – Zanzibar’s main market with everything from spices, fresh fish, slabs of meat, and huge baskets full of live chickens to sandals, plastic buckets, and mobile phones. Not to be missed is the Forodhani food market – a seaside food market that comes alive at night with a huge variety of seafood and barbecued meats!

Historical places include David Livingstone house, Hamamni Persian Bath, the Palace Museum, the House of Wonders, the Palace Museum, Mercury House, the Old Dispensary, and St Joseph’s Cathedral.

One could also opt to take a sunset dhow Sail – sail aboard a sunset cruise and watch the historic Stone Town shoreline glide-by, by while the lights from mainland Dar es Salaam twinkle in the distance. Anyone visiting Zanzibar simply must go on a spice tour.

With a local guide, you will walk amongst vanilla pod vines, fields of lemongrass, cumin seed pods, and turmeric root. Smell, sample, savor – the experience is a sensual journey into the spices that flavor our food. On your second day while in Zanzibar you could choose to take a half-day trip to Prison (Changuu) Island or visit Jozani Forest and prison island.

We can help arrange flights and speed boats in and out of Zanzibar. Upon arrival at Zanzibar airport or harbor, we transfer to Stone Town and begin our tour. Stone Town has narrow streets, impressive architecture, bustling markets, and small but interesting museums.

You will also see many reminders of Zanzibar’s historic involvement in the slave trade, abolished in these parts by the Sultan of Zanzibar in 1873.

It includes a visit to the former slave market site, which now stands as an Anglican church built in 1871, a town market, visit the Zanzibar Memorial Museum, the House of Wonder built-in 1883 (Beit-Al-Ajab), the old Arab Fort, Palace Museum, Old Indian dispensary (cultural center) to Maruhubi Palace ruins via Livingstone House.

Dinner in Stone Town (extra cost) at Forodhani Gardens, the Old Fort, or by the waterfront at the Livingstone Bar and Restaurant.

Day 2: Zanzibar Island – Speed boat or fly to Dar-es-salaam

0800 Hours: We enjoy breakfast at the hotel and then depart for the Spice Tour.  During the tour, you will learn about the spices, and herbal values, in cooking food and dyeing traditional ceremonial outfits for weddings and festivals. During the tour, you will walk through villages and spice plantations.

The spice farm workers will climb up the trees, looking for fruits, leaves, and barks for you to feel and taste. You can buy fresh spices directly from the farms.

1230 Hours: After the tour, you will be invited for a traditional Swahili lunch served in a local house. Later we shall visit the Kidichi Persian Baths built in 1850 by the first Sultan of Zanzibar as a gift for his Persian wife Sheharzad (granddaughter of Fateh Ali Shah of Persia).

After we shall transfer you to the harbor/ airport for your return trip to Dar-es-salaam.

We offer a 2 days safari from Zanzibar with one overnight stay at a lodge of camp in Mikumi National Park . The safari starts with a short flight early in the morning from the Island of Zanzibar to Dar es Salaam where your safari guide will be ready and waiting to drive you to Mikumi National Park as early as possible in order to beat the traffic of Dar es Salaam. At Zanzibar we can arrange your airport transfer from your hotel but if you wish to find your way to the Zanzibar Airport, no problem just make your way to Zanzibar Airport where you will catch a flight that we have booked for you to Dar es Salaam. The flight leaves as early as 0630 Hrs arriving at Dar es Salaam at 07.00 hrs.

This 2 day last minute safari from Zanzibar is offered with overnight stay at the nice mid range lodging at Camp Bastian. However the same package can be offered while staying at upgraded mid range lodges and tented camps or standard luxury tented camps located inside the Mikumi National Park. 2 days Safari from Zanzibar where to visit?

This safari tour as indicated takes you to Mikumi National Park, by far the best park near Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar especially if you are in for a quick wildlife encounter or if you are in a tight budget. Mikumi National Park’s landscapes can easily be compared with the Savannah in Serengeti with a lot of animals that can be spotted even from a few meters after entering the park’s gate.

If you have a budget that is a little higher you can take our 2 days Tanzania safari from Zanzibar ; with a visit to Tarangire National Park and Ngorongoro Crater.

2 days Safari from Zanzibar where to stay?

In this 2 days you will spend one night at a tented camp inside the park (within the park’s boundary) or a lodge outside the park. Currently there are no lodges inside the Mikumi National Park where you can stay during your 2 days safari from Zanzibar, but within the Mikumi township a few minutes’ drive from the park there are nice mid-range lodges where you can stay when doing your safari. Tented camps available within the park include the Vuma Hills Tented Camp, The Stanley’s Kopje, and Mikumi National Park formerly Kikoboga Tented Camp. Outside the park lodges include Tanswiss Lodge or Genesis Lodge.

Tanzania is one of Africa’s top wildlife destinations. To really savor this, you should spend at least a few nights in the bush. However, as wildlife densities are high in Tanzanian parks and reserves, you’ll be able to see a big variety of wildlife in a short time span if you need to take a 2-day safari. Are there 2-day tours available to Tanzanian parks and reserves?

“There are many 2-day/1-night tours available in Tanzania. Most safaris start from Arusha or Dar es Salaam, but it is possible to book a quick 2-day safari from Zanzibar too. Arusha is the gateway to the country’s Northern safari circuit. To take a tour of the entire circuit you need at least 4 or 5 days, but in 2 days you can visit the famous Ngorongoro Crater in combination with Tarangire or Lake Manyara National Parks. Of course you can also opt to reduce traveling time and spend both days in just one of these destinations. Even more convenient is an overnight trip to Arusha National Park, located not too far from the city. Here you can enjoy game drives and walking safaris, but more amazing are canoe trips on the Momella Lakes. Large flocks of flamingos often drop by the lakes. From Dar es Salaam, a convenient 2-day safari is to Mikumi National Park. If you park near one of the waterholes you may see a constant stream of animals, including huge herds of buffalo, coming to drink. Otherwise, you can go to Saadani National Park, which spills onto the beaches of the Indian Ocean. It is possible to drive here (the drive takes about three hours), but boat transfers are also available. Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve) can also be visited on a 2-day road trip from Dar es Salaam, but because of the distance, a fly-in trip here is more suitable.”

What can I expect from a 2-day Tanzania safari?

“On a typical 2-day safari, at dawn or straight after an early breakfast you’ll be picked up at your accommodation. Usually you’ll drive for several hours to reach the park. The drive gives you the opportunity to see rural Tanzania. Once you arrive at the park entrance gate, your driver-guide will take a few minutes to sort out the paperwork and pop up the roof of your 4x4. This is where your game drive starts. Your guide will drive slowly while looking for animals. You can relax and sit down or you can stand up and look around for animals. When animals move to seek shelter from the sun, it’s time to stop for lunch at a picnic spot, which could be at a scenic viewpoint or even a waterhole where you’ll be able to watch animals coming to drink. The afternoon is spent looking for more animals before you get to your accommodation for the night. After an early breakfast, you might go on another game drive before commencing the drive back to the city. You’ll be dropped back at your hotel in time for dinner.”

Is it safe to book a 2-day tour in Tanzania?

“All Tanzanian safaris run by reputable companies can be considered very safe. There is virtually no crime in any of the country’s parks and reserves. However, like anywhere in the world, cities tend to be crime hot spots. Most tours start in Arusha or Dar es Salaam. Many travelers walk around Arusha without any problems, but we suggest avoiding busy areas, such as the market and the bus station, and following some safety precautions. Dar es Salaam has a bad reputation for crime and you need to be more careful here. Exploring the city unguided is not recommended. Rather, book a tour or get around by taxi.”

Is it possible to see the Big Five in 2 days?

“Tanzania’s wildlife viewing is incredible, and on a 4- to 5-day safari around the Northern circuit your chances of seeing the Big Five are very good. This is more tricky on a 2-day trip though. Most Tanzanian parks and reserves don’t have rhino. The only place to dependably see black rhino in the wild is in the Ngorongoro Crater. The other members of the Big Five are regularly spotted here too, although you need some luck to see leopard. In the Dry season, Tarangire is known for its big elephant herds, and buffalo is commonly seen too. Sightings of big cats, however, can be erratic. There is great general wildlife viewing in Lake Manyara, and you’ll have the chance to see tree-climbing lions. Arusha National Park isn’t as much a conventional safari destination. There are lots of animals, including the beautiful black-and-white colobus monkey, but there’s little chance of seeing any of the Big Five, except perhaps buffalo. In Mikumi three of the Big Five are easily seen, but leopard sightings are very rare. In Saadani, while wildlife densities are rather low, you could see elephants, giraffes and several antelope species. A highlight in Saadani is a boat trip on the mangrove-lined Wami River.”

Is a 2-day Tanzania safari worth it?

“Whatever time you can allocate, it’s always worth getting out on a safari. Even though a proper safari should at least take you out into the bush for a few nights, sometimes a quick Tanzania safari is all you may have time to do. You might be traveling on business to the biggest city of Dar es Salaam and looking for the best way to spend a free weekend. Or perhaps you have booked a beach holiday in Zanzibar and you’d like a small safari adventure with a 2-day trip to the bush. Or maybe a 2-day safari is all the budget allows. It may surprise you how much you can see and take in on an overnight tour. And hopefully it will inspire you to do a longer safari another time.”

How much will this safari cost?

“There is a big range of prices for a 2-day safari in Tanzania. The cheapest 2-day budget camping tours start at around US$400 per person. Private tours are usually a bit more pricey than group tours where a vehicle might be shared by six to eight people. Mid-range private tours, where you stay in no-frills accommodation, start at around US$500 per person, but luxury safaris start at around US$800 per person. Fly-in Nyerere packages start at around US$750 per person for an overnight trip. Use the filters on the SafariBookings website to narrow down your search, and always get a few quotes before making a booking.”

I went on a 2-week safari in South Africa's famous Kruger National Park for just $50 a day

• I went on an epic two-week safari in South Africa's famous Kruger National Park for about $50 a day.
• I camped beneath the stars and saw elephants right from my tent.
• Driving our own car, camping, and preparing our own food saved us money. 

The idea of a South African safari often conjures up images of five-star lodges and luxury game drives — but a holiday in the bush doesn't have to be out of reach for travelers on a tighter budget.

According to a data analysis from Go2Africa , the average traveler heads on South African safaris with a medium-high budget, meaning they spend $5,500 to $6,000 on a trip, an increase from last year.

But, on a recent trip, I found that I was able to have an incredible two-week safari trip in Kruger National Park for about $50 a day.

Here's how I did it and how travelers can save money when planning their safari.

I saved by buying an annual pass

The biggest savings at Kruger National Park can come from buying a Wild Card, an annual pass that gives you a year of access to 80+ parks in southern Africa, including Kruger.

The Wild Card is discounted for South Africans but it cost me 3,780 rands, or about $200, as a foreigner.

Without a Wild Card, I would've had to pay over 486 rands a day to visit Kruger, meaning this pass pays for itself in just over a week.

Overall, my pass came to about 270 rands a day for the two-week trip.

We also stayed in one of Kruger's many rest camps

One of the most immersive ways to experience Kruger is by camping in the South African bush. We saw elephants near our camp and woke up to the sounds of warthogs and hyenas in the distance.

We live in South Africa , so it was easy enough to bring our own camping gear, though travelers can rent a tent, sleeping bags, chairs, and cooking basics from nearby rental companies for a few thousand rands for two weeks.

Kruger National Park has a range of rest camps for different budgets and preferences, whether you prefer to use your own tent or stay in a bungalow with your own kitchen and bathroom.

Prices also vary depending on the season, so it's wise to avoid really busy months, like September and December. I found that around mid-January to mid-March, two people can camp at Punda Maria, one of Kruger's cheapest camping options, for just 285 rands a night. During high season, prices go up by about 100 rands per night.

My husband and I visited during a less busy season. We camped at Maroela Satellite Camp and Crocodile Bridge Rest Camp for 331 to 349 rands a night.

Cooking our own food saved us money …

We chose to prepare our own meals and braai (a type of South African barbecue) beneath the stars.

Fortunately, most campsites have plug points, braai stands, shared bathrooms, shared kitchens, and shops selling everything you need to braai.

The park also has restaurants and coffee shops scattered throughout it, which is helpful for anyone who wants to purchase food and drinks without leaving the property.

But there's nothing quite like braaiing beneath the stars, watching for the occasional hyena along the fence line.

… and so did doing a self-driving safari

If you don't have your own car, you can rent a sedan for just over 4,000 rands for two weeks. Fortunately, though, there are enough tarred roads in Kruger that you don't need a special 4x4 to enjoy the park.

We ended up self-driving our own car in Kruger National Park, which allowed us to choose our own adventure and be our own guide.

Rest camps have sighting boards on which visitors pin their major animal sightings from that day and the previous day. This makes it easy to follow trends and choose where to search first. There's also an app where visitors post their sightings.

On our last self-drive safari in Kruger, we saw cheetahs and all the Big Five (leopard, elephant, rhino, lion, and African buffalo).

Overall, our trip was affordable and dreamy

We saved money throughout our trip and managed to go on a two-week safari in Kruger National Park for just under $50 a day per person.

This price includes two Wild Cards, petrol for our vehicle, and our camping fees and expenses — and our trip was well worth it.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.  

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
