Californian Wines
California wine region is often associated with fruit-forward, medium to full-bodied red wines that have firm tannins and are capable of aging for several years. New generations of winemakers are constantly changing the norms, experimenting, and creating wines in a large array of wine styles.
Californian white wines are usually toasty with smoky aromas and flavours thanks to the oak barrels used in the winemaking process. They also have fruity aromas and flavours of apple, citrus (especially lemon), and tropical fruits like mango or pineapple. Sometimes the aromas and flavours of the white wines suggest butter, butterscotch, vanilla or caramel – aromas which also arise from ageing in oak barrels. Again, white wine styles capture a diverse range of flavours and aromas. Often the more subtle and subdued have come into fashion as wine drinker preferences are constantly changing.
Surprisingly, considerable amounts of sparkling wine are produced in California as many of the most famous French Champagne brands, such as Moët & Chandon, Taittinger, Roederer, have now set up premises in the Golden State.

Places to Visit in California
Sacramento – capital city of california .
Sacramento might not be the most famous and touristic city in California, but it possesses the status of capital city of the Golden State. Indeed, in downtown Sacramento you will find the California State Capitol, a white building with a huge dome very similar to the actual one in Washington D.C.
The main attraction of the Californian capital is Old Town Sacramento. This neighbourhood occupies what was the central business district in the early 19th century. As a matter of fact, the first impression is that of having travelled on a time machine back to the Far-West era, as all the buildings are made of wood and folks in the dress from a bygone era are walking around. Some restaurants are still furbished like old saloons and the Salt Water Taffy candies are displayed in old barrels.
Don’t miss the waterfront of Old Sacramento and a walk along the Sacramento River, where classic old boats are docked.
Bodega Bay – Find Yourself on a Film Set
California is known all around the world as a paradise for films and Hollywood stars. Indeed, travelling around the whole state will make you feel as if you were about to enter a film location. Experience this sensation in the quaint town of Bodega Bay.
This super small town on the Pacific Coast north of San Francisco was chosen as the set of the film “The Birds” (1963) by the famous director Alfred Hitchcock. All the buildings you see in the film are still the same. There is also a shop that sells a costume of the protagonist of “The Birds” with ravens incorporated.

San Francisco - Home to a World of Experiences
San Francisco, or Frisco as it is called by the locals, is the “hippiest” city in the world; its colourful buildings, hippy shops, and green soul fully represent its character. This bustling city is famous for a number of great attractions and for having a real-life collection of world trams that constantly run up and down the city's undulating hill district.
The biggest challenge when visiting San Francisco is deciding where to go first. You won't want to miss a bike ride across the Golden Gate Bridge, a visit to Alcatraz Island, stroll at the crossroads of 1960's famed Height and Ashbury, or taking an instagrammable picture in front of the Painted Ladies. Don’t forget to pay a visit to the sealions that live at Pier 39.

When crossing the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, you will arrive in the town of Sausalito. The serenity of Marine County will also provide incredible views of the skyline of Frisco, dominated by the Transamerica Tower.

Nature, the Real Heart of California Wine Region
California wine region is home to some of the world's most beautiful views and natural wonders. The dramatic, winding coastline, sun-kissed valleys of vineyards, and spectacular national parks all make California a state worth visiting. This state is known for extremely diverse landscapes including snow-capped mountains, long stretches of golden beaches, and the world’s tallest sequoias, which cater to all kinds of nature lovers.
Yosemite National Park – Prepare to be Stunned
There are no exclamations that capture the views at Yosemite National Park other than "Wow!" The two major summits of the Park are the El Capitan and the Half Dome, of which the best picture can be taken from Glacier Point.
![wine trip california Yosemite Valley from Tunnel View, Yosemite National Park, California, USA](https://www.winetourism.com/2020/09/Depositphotos_9571507_s-2019.jpg)
Yosemite is so immense that from north to south, from east to west, the landscape continuously changes. If you drive on the Tioga Road (open only during the summer months because of the snow), you will encounter aa stunning, placid lake, a lunar-like landscape, luscious forests, and steep slopes perfect for climbing.
Artists Palette - Walk through a Painting in Death Valley
The Artists Palette is a hiking trail, part of the Artists Drive, that is located on the Californian side of the Death Valley. The trail is moderately trafficked and offers hikers and walkers of all skill levels the opportunity to experience the exquisite surrounding views.
The incredible colour of the rock is created by the oxidation of the metals, and it really gives the impression of being in the middle of a painting.
General Sherman - Stand at the Feet of the World's Tallest Tree
General Sherman is a giant sequoia tree, located in the Giant Forest of Sequoia National Park. Named after the American Civil War General, William Tecumseh Sherman, this sequoia is currently the largest living tree in the world.
At 83.3 meters (273.29 feet) high with a width of 7.7 meters (25.26 feet) General Sherman is roughly 2700 years old. There are two trails that visitors can walk to arrive at the base of the tree; on both trails, there are signs along the way explaining the natural history of the other secular sequoias.
Food and Drink to Try in California Wine Region
The cuisine of California reflects the extremely diverse culture of the population. Local specialties are influenced by Mexican, Latin American, Asian, and even European cuisines. The mild climate and the health-fanatic ideology of California promote the production and use of locally grown fresh fruit and vegetables, most of which are organic. Popular food like Avo Toast, Matcha Latte, and Açai Bowls, are all not specialties born in the USA but became popular throughout the world because famous people in LA went crazy for them.
Mission Burrito - The Official Burrito of San Francisco
The Mission Burrito is also known as “San Francisco Burrito”, is a specific type of burrito that became popular in the city during the 1960s. It is different from other types of burritos because of its extra-large size and holds additional ingredients like rice. In preparing the burrito, the wheat flour tortilla is first steamed to make it more flexible.
Most places selling mission burritos do not serve them with a knife and a fork, but encourage customers to eat it with their hand, tearing the foil and eating from above. It is also popular among locals to add salsa to the burrito before each bite.
Apple Martini – Cheers, You’re on TV!
You might recognise the bright green colour of this cocktail from various films and you watch repeatedly on Netflix.
![wine trip california Apple Martini](https://www.winetourism.com/2020/09/Depositphotos_65950365_s-2019.jpg)
This sweet and colourful cocktail was created first in Los Angeles in 1966 and remains extremely popular in American TV and film productions.
Ingredients include vodka, apple cider or any apple liqueur and sometimes triple sec, to add a bit of dryness. The Apple Martini is widely known as “Appletini” and it comes served in a cup cocktail glass garnished with a slice of apple or a cherry.
Ranch Dressing – Born in Santa Barbara
The most popular American dipping sauce got its name because it was first created by Gayle and Steve Henson in their ranch in Santa Barbara in 1954. The dressing became popular nationwide by 1983, when it was bottled and sold in supermarkets. Today it can be found all over the world.
Ranch Dressing is made up of a buttermilk base, seasoned with onions, garlic, salt, and herbs.

A California Wine Road Trip: 10 Wineries to Try
![wine trip california California Wine Country](https://www.roadunraveled.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/california-wine-napa1.jpg)
California conjures up a different image for everyone. It might be the bright sun illuminating the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco or Los Angeles’ famous Walk of Fame as crowds of tourists seek out their favorite stars’ names. Adam and I shared a vision: to us, California was seeing the waves of the Pacific Ocean crash along the coast and sipping wine among some of the most picturesque vineyards in the United States. We brought our vision to life when we planned a California wine road trip: in addition to driving along the state’s famous Highway 1, we picked ten wineries to try in four different regions over four days. Sure, Napa may reign as the quintessential spot to enjoy a glass of wine, but grapes grow throughout the state—and we had big plans to learn and try as much as possible.
![wine trip california](https://www.roadunraveled.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/cawine-sa-400x309.jpg)
California Wine Road Trip: San Diego Wine Region
Our California wine road trip started in San Diego , which ended up being surprisingly apropos because San Diego is likely the birthplace of California wine. There are conflicting accounts as to where grapes were first planted in the state, but it is widely believed that the first record of a sustained planting was in San Diego in the 1770s, when the Franciscans produced wine in their missions. Today, there are dozens of wineries in San Diego County, and merlot and chardonnay grow well in the Mediterranean-style climate.
► San Pasqual Winery
The first California winery we visited was, in part, for a celebration. I had a chance to speak at the Association for Talent Development’s International Conference and Exposition, and a few hours after my session on storytelling and instructional design I met Adam and a few friends and former co-workers at San Pasqual Winery. San Pasqual’s main winery and tasting room is 10 miles east of San Diego in La Mesa, but we gathered at their Seaport Village tasting room that overlooks the San Diego Bay.

California Wine Road Trip: Central Coast
California’s beautiful central coast is home to hundreds of wineries that represent an incredible diversity in varietals and styles. Geography is key in this part of the state; the Transverse mountain ranges produce micro-climates that, in turn, create optimal growing conditions for many different types of grapes. That makes this part of the state ideal for trying California wine—and it’s a great region to include on a California wine road trip!
![wine trip california Movie poster for Sideways](https://www.roadunraveled.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/sdwysmv-271x400.jpg)
► Sanford Winery
That scene was filmed at Sanford, which looks a bit different these days thanks to some remodeling, but it doesn’t take long to understand why wine lovers will appreciate what they have to offer. Sanford is home to the oldest vineyards in the county, and the wines offered represent decades of tradition and quality.
Sanford offers two tastings—a classic flight and a reserve flight—and we ordered both so we could try a little of everything. I was particularly impressed by the Pinot Blanc, the Fleur Du Domaine, and the Sanford & Benedict Vineyard Pinot Noir. The Pinot Blanc was bright, floral, and had a touch of sweetness on the nose. The Fleur Du Domaine was one of the most complex white wines we have tried; crisp, acidic, and bursting with the flavor of summer peaches, it’s a really interesting wine. Sanford makes a few different Pinot Noirs—each of them very good—but our favorite was the Sanford & Benedict Vineyard Pinot Noir. It was really well balanced, just a little peppery to me, and full of red fruits. We loved our visit; we pulled into the driveway of the Lompoc location just as they opened, and we were treated to a lovely, relaxing tasting that made it difficult to leave.

► Fess Parker Winery
![wine trip california Fess Parker Vineyards](https://www.roadunraveled.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/fess-parker-winery-02-400x260.jpg)
Of the wines we tried, it was Marcella’s—a white blend—that stood out to me. I’m a huge fan of blends, and this one is primarily Grenache Blanc and Viognier with Roussanne and Marsanne. I thought it was clean, almost bold for a white, with big apricot and apple flavors and a bit of an unexpected peppery finish. I hadn’t tried a white wine like it before, and we brought a bottle home to enjoy during the summer. The Big Easy was another winner. It’s a red blend, this time Syrah, Petite Syrah, and Grenache, with lots of red fruits like cherries and blackberries with some blueberry and vanilla on the finish.

► Broken Earth Winery
![wine trip california Broken Earth Winery](https://www.roadunraveled.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/broken-earth-winery-01-286x400.jpg)
We decided to enjoy the wine and cheese pairing, which was a great deal at 10 USD for six wines and six cheeses. There wasn’t a single pairing we didn’t love; from the crisp Albariño paired with salty goat Gouda to the fruit-forward Cabernet Sauvignon paired with nutty Gruyere, every sip and every bite left us wishing we could have that experience every day. The Reserve Merlot paired with truffle gouda was my favorite of the day, although the Chardonnay paired with blue cheese was a close second. Pairings change regularly, but it’s worth it to upgrade to a food pairing during your visit (and a wine and chocolate pairing is available as well!). We stayed much longer than expected because we had so much fun chatting with the staff, who were well-versed in wine and cheese and had lots of fun stories to share.

► Pessagno Winery
Toward the northern portion of California’s central coast, we stopped in for a tasting at Pessagno Winery. Pessagno made our list primarily due to its location in the Salinas Valley, a part of the world I have always loved in part due to John Steinbeck and his masterpiece East of Eden, which was set there. The winery represents a twenty-year history of winemaking.
For 15 USD, Pessagno offers a tasting of five wines from the twenty they list on their menu. Adam and I were quick to select 10 and agree to share all of them. The stand out wines were the blends: Due, Tre, and Quattro were all excellent, although Tre was my favorite. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Tannat, the wine is smooth and spicy with lots of vanilla tones. Adam was partial to the Pinot Noirs, and I also enjoyed the Intrinity Chardonnay with its oaky, tropical finish. We arrived close to the end of the day, yet the winery was busy and almost every seat at the bar was taken. Once we sat down we weren’t rushed, and the staff was great with recommendations and ensuring our glasses were never empty.

California Wine Road Trip: Napa Valley
A California wine road trip wouldn’t be complete without a stop or two—or even a day—in the Napa Valley. California wine is often synonymous with Napa; many of California’s most famous wine brands are based in Napa, and it’s an incredibly popular spot for wine tourism. In some ways you can’t go wrong; our drive along St. Helena Highway through Rutherford and Calistoga took us by dozens of wineries. From world-class vintages to picturesque locations, Napa is a great wine destination.
► Castello di Amorosa – the Castle Winery
![wine trip california Castello di Amorosa - aka the Castle Winery](https://www.roadunraveled.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/castle-winery-napa-400x281.jpg)
Castello di Amorosa offers several different options for visitors, from a basic tasting to a combined tour, tasting, and food pairing experience. We decided to enjoy only the basic tasting, which allowed us to select any five wines from a pretty extensive menu. Vincenzo, who greeted us when we walked into the tasting room, immediately took control of our experience, and we tried more than the five wines our admission provided. When he learned we like both red and white wines he carefully selected all of the wines he thought we should try—including a few that were not on the menu—and built a great, customized experience for us. The Sangiovese was oaky with lots of berry notes, and it was one of Adam’s favorite wines of the day. I really liked the Old Vine Zinfandel, which had notes of tobacco and berries and was well-balanced. We ended up purchasing the Il Brigante, a delightful wine that blended all of our favorites—Cabernet, Merlot, Zinfindel, and Sangiovese—into a practically perfect bottle.

► Silver Oak Cellars
![wine trip california Silver Oak Winery in Napa, California](https://www.roadunraveled.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/silver-oak-winery-282x400.jpg)
Silver Oak offered three wines during our visit: the 2012 Napa Valley Cab, the 2012 Alexander Valley Cab, and the 2006 Alexander Valley Cab. All three were exceptional; fruit-forward, balanced, and nuanced. Greg provided us with three generous pours, and when the last drop of my 2006 Cab was gone he refilled my glass without a word. In addition to enjoying our time talking with the staff and a few other guests, we loved the tasting room and had a great time walking around after our tasting to explore the view outside.
Silver Oak has one of the more expensive tasting fees we saw, but for 30 USD we enjoyed three nice pours, a bonus pour, and got to bring home Silver Oak wine glasses for our collection. Considering I got to enjoy quite a bit of the 2006 Cab—a 225 USD bottle!—it seemed like a bargain. The experience was worth every cent.

California Wine Road Trip: Sierra Foothills
Just west of Napa—yet just far enough that it falls under many travelers’ radars—is Sacramento and the Sierra Nevada foothills, an impressive region that draws comparison to Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. Wineries started popping up in the 1850s during the Gold Rush that sent thousands of people to the area. Vines benefit from a warm climate with low humidity, and temperature fluctuations between daytime and nighttime help the grapes to retain a nice acidity, which leads to well-balanced wines. We visited Amador County with Adam’s aunt and uncle, who hand-selected some incredible wineries to round out our California wine road trip.
► Amador Cellars
![wine trip california Vineyards at Amador Cellars](https://www.roadunraveled.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/amador-cellars-04-400x318.jpg)
For 5 USD visitors have the chance to sample six different wines, and we loved them all. The GSM Blend (Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre) was an instant favorite; it had notes of blueberry and lavender, and we were quick to decide we needed a bottle to bring home with us. We also enjoyed the Rocky Point Vineyard Zinfandel, with its big, bold fruit flavors and a softness that is hard to achieve in winemaking. The staff was incredibly welcoming, making sure we had a chance to revisit favorite wines, and we felt right at home during our visit.
More Information: AmadorCellars.com
► Helwig Winery
The Helwig family isn’t originally from California’s wine country, but you would never know it—their wines taste as if they benefit from generations of winemaking expertise. Started just about a decade ago by a family that relocated from the USA’s Midwest, Helwig hosts wine tastings, concerts, and other events throughout the year.

► Renwood Winery
Renwood Winery has a great tradition of winemaking in Amador County. For 25 years they have produced a variety of wines with an emphasis on Zinfandel, which grows well in the region. By the time we arrived to sample a few wines the tasting room was busy, but we still had a warm, welcoming experience from several fantastic people behind the bar- including our host Nicole.
Renwood offers several different flights, including one just for Zinfandel fans, but we both tried the Taste of Renwood flight to get a more well-rounded idea of what they produce. We sampled a Sauvignon Blanc, a Tempranillo, a Barbera, a Zinfandel, and a red blend. The Zinfandel really stood out to me; it had lots of blackberry and red fruit flavors, and it was easy to drink. The Sauvignon Blanc was also great, and on a hot day its bright crispness and citrus tones would be a refreshing choice. We loved our visit and wished we had time to relax outside, where dozens of people gathered at tables with a glass of their favorite wine after their tasting was complete.

Tips for Planning Your California Wine Road Trip
If you are thinking about planning your own California wine road trip, here are a few ideas to consider:
► Don’t overdo it
![wine trip california Amador Cellars](https://www.roadunraveled.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/amador-cellars-01-280x400.jpg)
► Pick a designated driver
If possible, travel with a designated driver —either one person who doesn’t plan to drink during your trip or by alternating days with all passengers. Drinking and driving is illegal, and it is dangerous to you and everyone you encounter on the road. Make smart decisions and ensure someone is sober and ready to drive at all times.
► Take Breaks
If you don’t have a designated driver, incorporate breaks into your road trip schedule. Plan to spend time after your tasting enjoying the scenery or talking with staff before moving along to your next stop. A California wine road trip is different than a night of bar hopping; it’s not about the quantity of wineries you visit but rather the quality of each visit.
► Make responsible choices
If you are going to be driving the car during your California wine road trip, don’t drink and drive. That is the most responsible choice you can make. During our road trip we met people who shared a single tasting, sipped and then spit out wine so they didn’t ingest it, and skipped tastings completely if it was their turn to drive. Pick a responsible strategy; we strongly discourage any decisions that lead to drinking and driving.
► Pick your wineries in advance
There are hundreds of great wineries to explore, and your choices may overwhelm your experience if you don’t do some research before you get there! Some wineries focus on a single varietal, like Silver Oak, and some offer an extensive tasting menu. Doing your homework and selecting wineries in advance will help you maximize your time and your overall experience. Also, many wineries—especially in Napa—require reservations in advance, which may impact your itinerary and require some planning.
► Some wineries are expensive
![wine trip california Napa Valley's Castle Winery tasting room](https://www.roadunraveled.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/castle-winery-tasting-room-400x244.jpg)
► Pick your hotels strategically
Many hotels are expensive, especially during popular times of the year or on weekends, so book hotel rooms in advance and note their location based on the wineries you will visit. We had a fantastic stay at the Residence Inn by Marriott in Vacaville, CA, which was about an hour from both Amador County and Napa. The suites are enormous, so we had plenty of room to spread out, and we liked having a kitchen where we could eat a takeout pizza from Round Table Pizza (and a microwave to heat up leftovers!). We also loved the complimentary hot breakfast, and the staff was terrific—warm, welcoming, and full of suggestions for what to see and do while we were in the area.

California Wine Tours
California, the Golden State, is known for many things. Great weather, glamorous beaches, and charming cities like San Francisco are just a few of its draws. It’s a paradise for foodies too, with fine dining experiences like no other state in the US. But what it’s best known for is perhaps its never-ending supply of wine.
Tours Suggestion in California
![wine trip california wine trip california](https://www.winepaths.com/bundles/winepaths/img/winepaths-logo-white.png)
There are more than 300,000 tons of grapes grown in California each year and the state produces over 17 million gallons of wine annually. If you’re looking for somewhere to enjoy wine tasting in America, our California wine tours will take your passion to new heights. With Wine Paths, you’ll get to delight and challenge your palate, and discover new and exciting wine varieties in the most beautiful surroundings.
With multiple wine regions to explore, and cultural wine routes where food and drink go hand in hand, a wine tour holiday in California is truly unforgettable.
Where to Visit
On a Californian wine tour, there are some wonderful regions to visit. This wine-soaked state produces a diverse portfolio of wines, all with different flavors and characteristics derived from the soil and climate. Conditions here range from endless sunshine to cool coastal air, and there’s a whole variety of terrain where the grapes are grown. As a result, each region lends its own unique flair to the wines found here.
Some of the top areas include The Central Valley, The Sierra Foothills, Southern California, and The North Coast – home to famous regions such as the Napa Valley, Sonoma Valley, Mendocino County and Lake County.
The Napa Valley is most certainly one of the most popular routes for wine tourists, experienced or otherwise. Whether you’re a serious connoisseur or dipping your toes into enotourism for the first time, the Napa Valley Wine Trail will surprise and delight you. It’s one of America’s most prolific wine regions, with everything from boutique wineries to established wine makers. It also happens to be one of the most coveted destinations for gastronomy and haute cuisine.
Not too far from Napa is the similarly impressive Sonoma Valley, an area recognized for its breathtaking vineyards and romantic scenery. This is a great area for those who want to combine wine with the outdoors. And when it comes to mixing food and wine, the dining ambience here tends to be more laidback than its North Coast neighbor.
Blessed with great weather pretty much all year round, California is perfect for travel at any time of year. June to September tends to be a popular time across the state, particularly for those who dream of sunbathing at beautiful beaches. But for wine tasting, the best time to arrive is between August and October, as this is the region’s harvest season.
The wine harvest is a good time to enjoy a wine tour as you’ll be able to see the grapes at their plumpest in the vineyards, and the towns and cities are bustling with activity. The weather will also be slightly cooler at this time, making it suitable for hikes and walking tours. During peak season, you can expect it to get very busy.
If you would prefer to avoid the crowds, March to May could be another good time to go. Spring means the region is in full bloom, but the summer rush is yet to begin. Alternatively, it’s also possible to visit Napa Valley or Sonoma Valley in winter when it’s quieter. The Napa Truffle Festival and other fine food events are another reason to consider winter wine holidays.
Wine in California
Within California, there are more than one hundred AVAs. These are geographical locations recognized for their grape growing, with differentiations in growing conditions that distinguish them from other areas. While some wine drinkers are already familiar with regions like Napa Valley and Sonoma Valley, there may be several AVAs found in each of the regions.
When tasting these AVAs, what’s particularly interesting is the distinctions of same or similar varietals. For instance, a Chardonnay grown in The Central Valley will taste entirely different from a Chardonnay from Monterey County. This remarkable diversity means that there’s a wine for every type of drinker out there.
If you inspect the labels of Californian wine, AVAs can only be listed if the wine is made from at least 85% of grapes grown in that area. If a county is listed instead of a specific geographical location, the percentage will be a maximum of 75%.
Where to Stay
Staying in the Napa Valley is an opportunity to experience the fine lifestyle of locals in the area. The finest wine and gastronomy of the highest order are enjoyed in this part of the world. More than 4.5 million people visit Napa Valley each year, so the region is not lacking in accommodation options. From grand five star resorts like Meadowood in St. Helena to charming winery stays, luxury is guaranteed in Napa.
Known to be a little more relaxed, Sonoma Valley offers just as much choice when it comes to place to stay. While the general atmosphere is more laidback and life is slightly slower paced, there are still plenty of luxury accommodation choices.
Places to Eat and Drink
The Napa region promises fine dining and chic, high-end restaurants with outstanding sommelier service. Eating out in the Napa Valley is a truly elegant experience, with a wide selection of one, two and three Michelin star establishments to choose from. One that we must mention is The Restaurant at Meadowood, a three Michelin star dining spot that always wows our clients during their stay.
Luxury dining is a growing concept in Sonoma too, with a list of its own Michelin restaurants. But the foodie adventure doesn’t just stop there. With our food and wine experiences, such as visiting the region’s premier cheese producers, your trip is set to be a memorable one. In Sonoma, you can also spend an afternoon with a local Michelin star chef and enjoy a five star lunch in a vineyard kitchen.
Whether you choose to visit Napa or Sonoma, Wine Paths will make your California wine tour thoroughly unforgettable.

Tips for planning a perfect trip to California wine country

A land of sunshine, grapevine-covered hills and more wineries than you could ever dream of, California Wine Country beckons wine lovers from all over the globe with its laid-back West Coast charm.
That said, a little planning goes a long way when it comes to traveling to this wine wonderland. Here are our tips to help you maximize your time and money in one of California’s most popular destinations.
![wine trip california Merlot grapes on vine in vineyard; California wine country](https://lp-cms-production.imgix.net/features/2019/07/grapes-663a6fa2aa97.jpg?auto=format&q=75&w=1920)
Winery tasting and tour reservations
Reservation policies differ at almost every winery; some allow walk-ins while others require appointments in advance. We recommend booking reservations when possible even when they aren’t required, especially on weekends when the valley lights up with activity.
Wineries usually have tours a few times each day, with the last tour running around 3:30 or 4:00pm, so keep this in mind when planning which wineries you want to tour versus the ones where you simply want to enjoy a tasting. Tasting reservation windows usually run a bit later in the day.
It can be tempting to rush around to as many wineries as you can fit into your itinerary, but we recommend taking it slow and truly enjoying each location – nobody likes feeling rushed through their glass of wine. Tastings usually take around an hour and a half, especially if there is a tour included, and can stretch longer if you’re enjoying the setting.
![wine trip california Rows of stacked barrels in a stone cellar, a common way of aging wine in California wine country](https://lp-cms-production.imgix.net/features/2019/07/NapaValley_wine_cellar-f5110a223b39.jpg?auto=format&q=75)
Traveling with a group
Restaurants and wineries in wine country are not keen on splitting checks for groups, and things can get a bit crazy when it comes to organizing finances after a day full of meals and wine tastings. We recommend using a bill-splitting app like Splitwise , which has incredible versatility when it comes to entering payments and settling up. Users can create groups, assign costs to specific individuals within that group and easily pay using Venmo at the end of the trip. Other bill-splitting apps include Settle Up and Splittr .
Vacation rentals in wine country
Vacation rental companies like AirBnB and VRBO are hugely popular across the United States, and California is no different. However, Napa Valley instituted laws in 2016 reining in vacation rentals, and properties have to register with and be approved by the local government; a public list details all the addresses in Napa that are legally operating as vacation rentals. That said, homeowners are still hosting plenty of unregistered AirBnB options, but as a traveler, be aware not every listing is legal. Sonoma’s policies are more lax than its neighbor.
![wine trip california Rows of grapes under a blue sky in California wine country](https://lp-cms-production.imgix.net/features/2019/07/rows_grapes-bce69280104f.jpg?auto=format&q=75)
Transportation hacks
Drinking wine all day is bound to lead to a buzz. Designated drivers are your best bet for safe, responsible exploration of wine country, but there are plenty of other options should all members of the group want to partake.
Ride services like Uber and Lyft frequent the valley; share costs with friends and hop along from winery to winery without worry. The area is not big – Napa Valley is only about 30 miles from top to bottom – so rideshare costs remain reasonable.
California wine country also has plenty of driving services to help visitors travel safely from destination to destination – try Beau Wine Tours or Magnum Tours .
![wine trip california Owner of Bella Winery in Dry Creek Valley sampling a red Sonoma zinfandel.](https://lp-cms-production.imgix.net/features/2019/07/examining_wine_glass-8f3f0ffee77a.jpg?auto=format&q=75)
Should I buy a bottle? Tasting fees and bottle shipping
Wineries offer wine tastings in the hope their visitors will buy a bottle (or several) after its conclusion, and tastings in wine country aren’t free, generally running around $35-45 dollars. Some wineries will waive tasting fees if you buy a bottle, while others require more of a commitment (a multiple-bottle purchase, or a wine-club membership). Always ask about the policy, because it’s generally not advertised.
If you do find that perfect bottle of cabernet sauvignon you’d like to bring home, it’s often more budget-friendly to take the wine with you rather than having the winery ship it. Shipping services like Buffalo Shipping Post in Napa specialize in wine and offer special insulated boxes and insurance to protect against breakage and loss. If you are a US resident, be aware some states don’t allow direct shipments of alcohol; make sure you can send your bottles home before purchasing.
If you only have a few bottles and are taking to the skies to make it home, checking a bag is also an option. However, wine is more likely to break and most airlines now charge checked-bag fees, so compare shipping fees with bag fees and make the call that’s best for you.
Finding deals in California wine country
California wine country isn’t exactly a budget destination, but you can find some savings along the way. If wine is your thing and you envision returning to the valleys in the future, a wine club membership at your favorite winery could be a good option. Generally, memberships afford perks like free tours and tastings, as well as discounts at sister properties.
Other cost-savers include apps like Winery Finder, which offer 2-for-1 deals at more than 100 wineries after you get through a $10 paywall.

Can I wear jeans to a winery?
Yes! Jeans are acceptable year-round – we call it wine country casual (for women — sundresses, blouses and skirts, nice jeans, wedges, sandals, etc.; for men – golf shirts, khaki pants, nice jeans, dressier shorts, stylish sneakers, boat shoes, etc.).
A more upscale winery might call for darker denim, and be sure to dress in layers as many winery experiences take place outdoors and tours often take guests through wine caves and chilled cellar areas.
How do I taste wine?
First of all: Wine should be enjoyed , so don't overthink it – have fun and drink what you like.
If you want to taste like a professional:
- LOOK at the color and clarity
- SWIRL to release the aromas
- SNIFF to prepare your palate
- SIP and enjoy the complexities
- Spit into a "dump bucket" if you don't want to get inebriated.

Napa Valley & Sonoma
Vacation packages, welcome to wine country, adventure out of the city and explore napa valley and sonoma..
More than just two wine regions, the valleys of Napa and Sonoma boast over 30 diverse growing regions, yielding some of the country's – and the world's – most celebrated wines. In the Napa Valley, wind your way up the Silverado Trail for wine tasting, treat yourself to a boutique shopping spree in Yountville, or dine at a Michelin-rated restaurant. Sonoma has a more intimate laid-back atmosphere, especially as you journey north toward Healdsburg and Geyserville. Little towns dot the route and you'll find an abundance of smaller wineries offering unique tasting experiences.

More About Napa Valley & Sonoma
Napa Valley, known for its Chardonnay, Merlots, and Cabernet Sauvignon, is a beautiful region comprised of four main towns – Napa, Yountville, St. Helena and Calistoga. With wineries clustered close together, it’s easy to hop from vineyard to vineyard to try it all. A mere hour’s drive away, the neighboring region of Sonoma is home to the main towns of Sonoma and Healdsburg as well as numerous smaller towns, each with its own charming tasting rooms. Unlike Napa Valley, Sonoma sprawls over a much larger footprint so plan for additional travel time between wineries. If you want the freedom to fully soak in the scenery between sips, consider taking part in a tour to facilitate your visit. Both Napa Valley and Sonoma can be enjoyed at any time of the year. In the spring, you’ll witness nature in full bloom. In the summer, exciting events are hosted nearly every weekend. In autumn, experience the harvest and the great crush – the first step of a grape’s transformation into wine. In winter, unwind in the laid-back atmosphere of the luxurious spas. No matter when you choose to visit, an enjoyable experience awaits!

Southern California's Wine Scene Is Seriously Underrated — Here Are 5 Vineyards to Visit
Take a break from the beach and visit some world-class wineries on your next trip to SoCal.

Although the Napa and Sonoma Valleys are the most celebrated regions of California wine country, a hidden gem wine region is tucked away in the heart of Southern California — every bit as worthy of recognition. A seemingly endless expanse of coastline, soaring mountain ranges, and a mostly temperate climate account for Southern California's ideal growing conditions for some wines of equal caliber to those of Napa and Sonoma.
Still, if you haven't heard much about it, you're not alone — but winemakers in Southern California are trying to change that.
Southern California comprises the South Coast American Viticultural Area (AVA) — another name for an officially recognized wine region — which includes sub-AVAs like Temecula Valley AVA, Ramona Valley AVA, and Malibu Coast AVA, to name a few. Because the pervasive myth held about Southern California's inland wine region is that it is mostly a dry, desert climate and could never produce wines with the same complexity and nuance as Napa and Sonoma, the wineries have often gone overlooked by out-of-state visitors and more serious wine aficionados.
However, in the South Coast AVA — most notably home to Temecula Valley's expansive 33,000 acres of vineyards — award-winning wineries produce wines in a climate that nearly mimics the conditions of world-renowned wine regions like France's Rhône Valley, as well as various parts of Tuscany. With its proximity to the Pacific Ocean, Temecula Valley's microclimate can even be likened to that of the Mediterranean, making it an ideal area for growing grapes such as Chardonnay, Vermentino, Sangiovese, Syrah, and Viognier. When paired with its rolling hills and soil content, the low-pressure systems combine to create sunny days and cool nights that complement its granitic, mineral-rich soil — all of which help the grapes to retain higher acid content and tannins.
Southern California, once a wine region without the winemaking wisdom it now possesses, may have previously been stigmatized as a newer, still-developing area that needed time to grow and mature. Nonetheless, today, winemakers have experimented in such a way that distinguishes Temecula Valley wines in a category uniquely their own—with new advanced technologies implemented and grape varietals that are beginning to thrive in Temecula Valley's terroir. In due time, as has been the case with Napa and Sonoma wines, Temecula wines will most certainly grow into and express their fullest potential.
Must-visit Wineries in Southern California
As nearly 50 wineries comprise the Temecula Valley AVA alone, there are ample opportunities to discover new wineries and new expressions of your favorite wines. Here are just a few wineries worth checking out:
Lorimar Vineyards and Winery
Lorimar Vineyards and Winery , a Tuscan-style winery in Temecula Valley, is a 22-acre estate vineyard, in which the first vines of Cabernet Sauvignon were planted in 2000. An inviting patio area allows for visitors to take in the surrounding views while enjoying a tasting. Stop by here for a red wine flight for two and sample their award-winning, fruit-forward Sangiovese, Zinfandel, Malbec, and Cabernet Sauvignon wines.
Robert Renzoni Vineyards
Robert Renzoni Vineyards — with its Tuscan villa-style tasting room and picturesque hilltop views of Temecula Valley — has a long-standing family history of winemaking in Italy, which dates as far back as 1886. Its 12-acre vineyard contains classic Bordeaux and Italian grape varietals, 10 acres of which include Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Grigio, Sangiovese, and Barbera.
Maurice Car'rie Vineyard
Known predominantly for its award-winning Sauvignon Blanc and Gewurztraminer wines, Maurice Car'rie Vineyard was among the first vineyards planted in the Temecula Valley region in 1968; today, it has more than 70 acres of vines. Visitors can enjoy a tasting flight of wine outdoors with live music on the estate's Victorian-style farmhouse paired with its famous baked brie in garlicky sourdough bread.
Mount Palomar Winery
Founded in 1969, Mount Palomar Winery was one of the first wineries to take on the trend of cultivating Mediterranean grape varietals in Temecula Valley. Today, Mount Palomar Winery produces a range of wines in the classic Bordeaux and Italian styles from their 55 acres of estate grapes and 16 different grape varietals.
Milagro Winery
Traveling further south from Temecula Valley, Milagro Winery in the Ramona Valley AVA boasts more than 10,000 vines with 11 varietals of grapes on its 110-acre estate, and its wines are crafted with 100% estate-grown grapes. The drought-resistant vines are planted on the sloping hills in Ramona and are cultivated in mineral-rich soil. Fun fact: Milagro's winemaker was trained in Bordeaux and is a highly sought after winemaker in Mexico.

We have engaged tour guides in countries around the world. A great guide can exponentially impact a trip in a new city and Ian Gustafson made our trip to Sonoma Wine Country in California very memorable. He was interested in knowing what we liked in wine, the type of experience we were looking for, and the pace at which we wanted to experience local wineries. He more than delivered in creating an unforgettable wine country experience. We enjoyed our conversations with Ian, learning about this community he calls home and what he thinks are the standout features of the Russian River Valley and Healdsburg. He is flexible, thoughtful and focused on our comfort and priorities. We unreservedly recommend him as one of the best tour guides we have ever spent the day with.

What an amazing experience!!! Ian was so incredible and super responsive. I researched other companies before contacting Windsor Wine Tours and did not receive the warmth and helpfulness that Ian provided. He was able to get a reservation at a very secluded winey which that experience was OUT OF THIS WORLD! We had to pivot a bit on our reservations due to the storm, but Ian was on top of it and worked to get us to visit a new place that was recommended. Ian and WWT will forever be our driver each time we come to the area.

What an amazing personalized wine tour!!! Ian and Katie helped us plan a wine tour for our vacation, the tour included small family owned wineries that were hidden gems. We had a wonderful time and will be using Windsor Wine tours from now on when we are vacationing in the Sonoma and Napa areas!

If your planning a wine tasting experience look no further than Windsor Wine Tours. Ian was incredible! I just back a few days ago from a girls trip in Windsor and have already told about 50 people how amazing our wine tasting day was. Ian saved the trip!! My original booking with another company didn't work out but I got in touch with Ian within a view days of the tasting. I've only been to that area once 11 years ago so I really didn't know what wineries to check out. There's way too many to choose from. Based on Ian's knowledge of the area and the types of wine I told him we liked, he booked me 3 tastings. Each place had such great wines and they were all so different. He found us some gems!! I'll be talking about this trip forever. Thank you Ian!!!

While planning our mother/daughter wine country trip to Northern Sonoma County, I was researching options for a wine tour and requested information from several of the local companies I found online. Ian, with Windsor Wine Tours contacted me personally within 15 mins of submitting the online form. He was super friendly and informative and helped us plan the perfect itinerary! He booked all of the tastings for us and even gave us a recommendation for a wonderful deli where we ordered lunch (that he picked up for us). The day of our tour he arrived promptly in a beautiful, comfortable Lincoln Navigator. We had the best day touring 3 amazing vineyards! Ian gave us tons of recommendations and information about wine country and then got us back to our hotel safely. We truly couldn't have asked for a better time! If you are looking to book a wine tour, I cannot imagine anyone being better than Ian with Windsor Wine Tours!

Windsor Wine Tours is great! My husband had a couple days of business meetings in Napa, and I had Ian set-up one day of wine tastings for me during this time. Ian arranged some great tastings at boutique, family-owned wineries for me, kept all my purchases cold in a beautiful spotless Navigator, and provided a true 5 star experience!

Ian was AMAZING. We booked Windsor Wine Tours for a bachelorette party and he went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable and stayed on time for our day! When we had some down time he had a great recommendation for a winery nearby. He even gave our bachelorette a box of chocolates to congratulate her on her upcoming wedding. Highly recommend booking when you need a DD in wine country!

Ian from Windsor Wines Tours was excellent and we would be happy to hire him for any of our driving needs in the future. The suv was very comfortable and even had enough room in the back for the 2 guys who are 6 feet tall to fit without feeling crushed. The suv fit 6 guests plus the driver. He had also brought snacks and waters which were very much needed during our tour of 5 wineries. He has a lot of knowledge of the area and was always promptly waiting for us as we wrapped up. Ian is very amicable and definitely enjoys what he does, he didn't mind us asking to take detours and make short stops to take pictures or run to the restrooms. If I could offer up more than 5 stars I would do it in a heart beat.

The $5 California White Wine We’re Buying at Aldi All Summer Long
T he debate over the song of the summer is just heating up ( are you team “Espresso “?). The sip of the summer, however, is already chilling and ready for cheersing.
You see, earlier this year Aldi, America’s new favorite grocery retailer , quietly launched a new line of undeniably budget-friendly California wines . The lofty/aspirationally named, California Heritage, features a variety of the most popular grapes, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, and Pinot Noir.
We’re no strangers to Aldi’s rapidly expanding wine collection and firmly believe you can score a perfectly decent bottle for less than $10. Naturally, we were curious how these sub-$5 wines would fare once we twisted off their California-stamped caps and gave them a swirl. Because of state laws, Aldi does not sell alcohol in any New York locations (a travesty, we know!), so the team at Aldi graciously sent us all nine bottles to sample.
Keeping on trend, we gathered a bunch of people who work at The Kitchn (and Apartment Therapy Media, our parent company) and hosted an impromptu happy hour on a Thursday in May. After a lot of sipping, but not, you know, too much, this bottle of bubbly was the runaway fave.
What You Should Know About the California Heritage Brut Sparkling
Like the other eight reds and whites in the line, this California Heritage Brut Sparkling is produced by industry giant E & J Gallo Winery in Modesto, CA. (Barefoot, a favorite of Mama Kelce ; Dark Horse; and Apothic are just a very small sampling of the wines coming out of this corner of California ). The sparkling wine comes in a champagne-green bottle (which Gallo also makes) with a twist-off top that screws back on.
It’s $4.95 and available year-round at Aldi locations where beer and wine are sold.
Our Honest Review of California Heritage Brut Sparkling
You know people really enjoy something when it’s the first thing to disappear. That’s exactly what went down here (pun intended). This Brut has serious “signature wine” of the season, which, as our wine expert suggests , classifies it as a no-brainer for neighborhood parties, solo porch hangs, and pretty much anything in between. Mimosas, anyone ?
It’s very drinkable and has prominent bubbles, reminiscent of the Member’s Mark Brut Champagne at Sam’s Club. In fact, Sarah, our assistant editor, found it comparable to many other Bruts she’s had in the past — and at just $5, “this one is fire,” adds Ola, our culinary assistant, who also likes the fruitiness of the wine. “It smells like stone fruit.”
It is on the sweet side for a Brut, which some people found to be a little too much or not enough. It’s all about personal preference! There’s also an even sweeter Extra Dry Sparkling in the collection, which is Andrea, our social media manager’s favorite (and the second bottle we polished off).
Find it in stores : California Heritage Brut Sparkling, $4.95 for 750 mL at Aldi

The California wine industry — along with the worldwide wine industry — is undergoing an “unprecedented downturn,” the San Francisco Chronicle reports. A report by wine industry analytics company Gomberg Fredrikson notes that wine consumption is down by 8.7 percent as of 2023, in part because millennial and Gen Z consumers drink less alcohol, and in part as the alcohol market widens to include hard seltzer and canned cocktails. Wine’s decline follows a large spike in sales spurred by the lockdown period of the pandemic in 2020, which in turn led to increased production at wineries. Demand then decreased as customers bought too much and slowed their purchases; restaurants also decreased their total purchases from wineries during the same period.
Winery owners tell the Chronicle that “if you’re lucky” sales are down just 10 percent — but others are feeling the impact of lower wine sales more acutely. However, an industry analyst says the dip in sales could be a matter of “inventory adjustment” as customers work their way through their wine collections and start buying again.
Michelin-starred restaurant hosts brisket night
For one night only, Michelin-starred restaurant Osito is shedding its tasting menu and stoking the fire for something a little different: Texas-style brisket. The Mission District restaurant is throwing a brisket party today, Wednesday, May 8, from 4 to 8 p.m. with $10 cocktails. Reservations are available via Tock for $45 per person; walk-ins are accepted.
Standard Fare adds dinner service
Berkeley’s Standard Fare is best known for its lunchtime salads and weekend brunch, but now the 10-year-old business is getting a refresh. Owner Kelsie Kerr announced in a recent newsletter that the restaurant will get a “beautification update” from May 7 to 9, during which Standard Fare will close. Then the restaurant will add dinner to its offerings in late May. The start date for dinner service has yet to be announced, but the planned hours are from 4:30 to 9 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. (And yes, breakfast, lunch, and brunch will continue.)
Bay Area distillery to close
Richmond-based Dissident Spirits is closing up shop at the end of the month, the company announced the decision via Instagram . “The evolving market conditions and insufficient growth have led to an unsustainable situation,” the post reads in part. The company will sell off its inventory for the next three weeks. “We sincerely thank all our partners and customers for your unwavering enthusiasm and support throughout the years,” the post continues.

No walk-ins allowed: What to know when touring the world's best wine regions
By ,cnbc • published may 16, 2024 • updated on may 16, 2024 at 5:25 pm.
Gone are the days when wine tasting was confined to local wineries or national borders.
Today's consumers crave authentic wine experiences in the land where it's cultivated.
24/7 Los Angeles news stream: Watch NBC4 free wherever you are
In Europe, where the wine economy is predominantly export-driven, tasting rooms tend to be family-operated. That means there may be just one person serving visitors, and appointments are often hard to schedule.
The United States, Australia and South Africa take a more open-door approach, with wineries built to accommodate tourism and walk-in visitors.

No matter where your wine travels lead you, consider these questions before heading out:
- What kind of wine do you like?
- What type of experience are you interested in?
- Do you need to make an appointment?
- Will there be food on-site?
- How will you get there?

Cramer's Lighting Round: Abercrombie & Fitch is a buy
Of France's 11 wine regions, Bordeaux, Burgundy (or Bourgogne) and Champagne are the most eminent.
Bordeaux is known for lush reds such as cabernet sauvignon, while Burgundy champions pinot noir and chardonnay wines. Champagne produces sparkling wines made from chardonnay, pinot noir, and pinot meunier grapes.
While in Bordeaux, visitors can stop at the Cité du Vin wine museum, explore elegant chateaux and dine in Michelin-star restaurants. Bordeaux is the only city in Europe with wineries within the city walls. Some are accessible via bike or tram.
![wine trip california wine trip california](https://image.cnbcfm.com/api/v1/image/107415084-1715755857969-gettyimages-1005026900-AFP_17W9B9.jpeg?w=1920&h=1080)
Burgundy is home to spectacular landscapes covered by vineyards and dotted with centuries-old chateaux. An area of its vineyards, called The Climats, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The region of Champagne is worth a visit and not only for the bubbles. Wine tours at some of the older producers may include a view of the ancient underground cellars used to escape the German soldiers during World War I.
![wine trip california Montagne de Reims, one of the five sub-regions of the Champagne wine region.](https://image.cnbcfm.com/api/v1/image/107415089-1715756399472-gettyimages-858064228-img_3826.jpeg?w=1920&h=1080)
Most in-demand French tasting experiences must be booked in advance. Also, hours of operation vary from region to region.
Travelers should consider hiring a driver in Burgundy and Champagne. Alternatively, river cruises, like those on the Rhône, are an excellent way to see these magnificent wine regions.
Tuscany, one of the oldest wine regions in Italy, is a beautiful region of rolling hills, cypress trees, olive orchards and vineyards.
Chianti classico is the main attraction in Tuscany, but Montalcino's brunello is a huge draw for aficionados. Though both are made from Sangiovese grapes, the flavor profiles are quite different.
![wine trip california The vineyards of the Chianti wine region in Tuscany, Italy.](https://image.cnbcfm.com/api/v1/image/107415091-1715756715287-gettyimages-174101238-000020318219_XXXLarge.jpeg?w=1920&h=1080)
Wine festivals are an easy way to enjoy regional wine in Italy. In Tuscany, the village of Greve hosts the Chianti Classico Wine Festival in mid-September. Also in the fall, the town of Alba in Piedmont hosts a wildly popular wine and truffle festival. Parking can be tough, so visitors can consider carpooling or traveling via taxi.
Hired drivers are recommended in Tuscany; the area is mountainous with lots of curves and narrow roads. Similar to France, visitors should book appointments in advance.
Wine touring in the New World
Wine tourism in the New World is casual and easy. Appointments are rarely needed, and most tasting rooms are open seven days a week.
The United States
California is renowned for wine tasting, though almost every state in the continental U.S. has a wine region or wine tourism area.
Napa Valley, known for its bold cabernet sauvignon, is the premier wine region in the United States. Visitors can drive between vineyards, bike the Napa Valley Wine Trail, or book a ride on the vintage Napa Valley Wine Train.
![wine trip california Visitors tasting wine at Napa Valley's Freemark Abbey winery.](https://image.cnbcfm.com/api/v1/image/107415092-1715757016830-gettyimages-524121180-02featureswinetasting.jpeg?w=1920&h=1080)
Sonoma is a vast region with rolling hills and 50 miles of rugged coastline – best known for pinot noir and chardonnay, plus some zinfandel in the warmer appellations. Tasting rooms are spread out, so more time is needed to explore it.
The best way to visit both regions is to book a driver, ideally one with contacts at the wineries. While it used to be the norm to book in advance, many visitors now walk in for a tasting. However, appointments are still preferred.
Other states with bustling wine tourism include Texas, Washington, Oregon, Virginia and New York.
Wine tourism in the land "Down Under" is cutting-edge.
Most of the wineries and tasting rooms are referred to as cellar doors. A few regions to consider are Yarra Valley in Victoria; Barossa Valley near Adelaide, and Margaret River about two hours south of Perth.

Wine tourism in Yarra Valley is convenient, with cellar doors open daily and wineries less than a mile apart. On-site dining and even accommodations are very common, making this area easy to visit.
Many large producers host concerts and outdoor events, that showcase the region's chardonnay, pinot noir and some sparkling wines.
A renowned wine touring region that welcomes kids
Margaret River offers great surfing as well as wine tasting. Visitors can look for unoaked chardonnay and Bordeaux blends. Its winding roads are known for frequent kangaroo crossings, and drivers are recommended.
Barossa is one of the older wine regions in Australia, with some 200 cellar doors within two hours of Adelaide. Here, wine tasting can come with koala and kangaroo sightings. Many grape varietals are grown in the valley – including grenache and riesling - ensuring there's something for most palates.
South Africa
South Africa may be considered a new world wine region, but Constantia, a top destination for wine tasting, is centuries old.
Opened in 1685, Groot Constantia is South Africa's first wine farm. It sits among other vineyards that make up the Constantia Wine Route , a 20-minute drive from Cape Town.

Stellenbosch is a popular region with an established, and bikeable, wine route. The area has world-class restaurants too.
Specific wineries can be booked in advance, but most are open daily. The country's top varietals include chenin blanc, sauvignon blanc, pinotage and shiraz, showcasing the diversity of South African wines.

On this occasion to travel to Chicago , I want to buy good Midwest wine.

Also look at Missouri wines.
Plus I know it's not Midwest, but if looking for wines from interesting states try some of the Virginia ones if available.
There are wineries in southwest Michigan; you can probably find Michigan wine at Binny's.
Cross reference with the list of Illinois wineries that grow their own grapes and produce their own wine.

Unfortunately a number of midwest wineries cut corners by buying grapes from elsewhere (usually California or Washington castoffs)
![wine trip california](https://static.tacdn.com/img2/badges/20px/rev_01.png)
Most IL wineries buy their grapes from out of state as most wine grapes can't handle our winters. There are Galena cellars out west that makes wine that is somewhat drinkable.
Talk to the staff at Binny’s, they should have wines from various Midwest states.
