The Dream Western Ghats Road Trip in 2024 (With Map)

Last Updated on January 8, 2024

My love for the Western Ghats of India is no secret. The temperate weather all year round, the winding roads along the lush green hills, the magical monsoon, and the wildlife – the Western Ghats are what dreams are made of.

Have you ever thought of embarking on a Western Ghats Road trip spanning the whole stretch of the world’s hottest ecological hotspot?

Thanks to my stay in Bangalore, I have visited the different parts of this UNESCO natural heritage site more times than I can count.

Every time, I fell in love with it a little bit more. So this post is my tribute to the mesmerizing landscape that inspired the travel writer in me.

I have a disclaimer to make if it’s not clear already. I have never been on this week-long road trip or any such long road trip before.

But I have been to many (a lot) of these road trips on an extended weekend, enough to select the best for what I would call the Western Ghats Dream Route.

Western Ghats of India – an introduction

The Western Ghats is the name given to the Sahyadri Mountain range, which happens to be the oldest mountain range in India. This 1600 km long mountain range runs parallel to the western coast of the Indian peninsula.

With over 300 endangered species of flora and fauna speckled over an area of 14000 square kilometers, the Western Ghats is one of the world’s eight “hottest biodiversity hot spots”. Another name given to the Sahyadri Mountains is “the Great Escarpment of India ”.

Geographically, the Western Ghats start from the Dang region in Maharashtra and end at Kanyakumari, the southern tip of India.

Unfortunately, this amazing region was exploited first by mass deforestation under the British government and later by illegal mining. It was declared an ecological hotspot in 1988 through the efforts of ecologist Norman Myers.

In 2012, 39 sites of Western Ghats across Maharashtra, were awarded the status of UNESCO world heritage site. Following this, there was increased awareness and measures taken by environmentalists to protect the mountains and wildlife.

The ecosystem of the Western Ghats regulates the monsoon pattern of the country and the climate of the Indian peninsula. So next time you plan a trip to the country, do not restrict yourself to the Taj Mahal and palaces, come down south and take a road trip across the Western Ghats of India.

Ever considered going on a 7-day long Western Ghats road trip? Scenic roads, lush green mountains, castles, temples and much more on this amazing journey. You can also pick one of the 7 road trips combined to form the best itinerary of Western Ghats ever. #travel #western Ghats

Western Ghats Road Trip – 7-day itinerary

So let's chalk out our Western Ghats itinerary covering my favorite spots in 7 days. The problem is, I just have too many favorites and just 7 days.

So this is truly more about the journey than each destination. You can shorten it or extend your stay at one or more places.

  • Day 1 – Mollem and Dudhsagar Falls of Goa
  • Day 2 – Drive through the Konkan Coast
  • Day 3- Explore the Sharavati Valley
  • Day 4 – Coorg
  • Day 5 – Bandipur/ Mudumalai Tiger Safari
  • Day 6– Kodaikanal
  • Day 7– Munnar

Though I imagine this as a long drive it could also be a route for the Western Ghats bike trip.

Total distance -1295 km. Route .

The Western Ghats start from Maharashtra and there are some pretty spectacular spots there. However, this itinerary is designed especially for the best 7-day road trip, so I had to exclude them.

I would give a special mention of the Kaas plateau of Satara, Maharashtra which is just one of its kind and still on my bucket list. The plateau is filled with blossoms during monsoon, from June to early September.

Its floral biodiversity makes it one of the 39 heritage sites in the Western Ghats. If you plan to start from Mumbai, you may do a trip to the Kaas Plateau and then take a train to Goa before embarking on this road trip.

western ghats trip plan

This itinerary will take you through two of the tallest waterfalls in India, multiple wildlife reserves, the amazing Konkan coast, grasslands, tea gardens, and spice plantations among the many natural wonders. You will also come across several hill-forts, ancient temples, monasteries, and churches. Are you excited about the drive now?

Day1 – The other side of Goa

western ghats trip plan

Discover a different face of India's most famous hippie destination, the beach paradise called Goa. Mollem is a small town in Goa near two beautiful forests – the Mollem wildlife sanctuary and the Bhagwan Mahavir National Park.

Together they are home to some 722 species of wild plants and a variety of animals and birds. The biggest attraction of the Mahavir National Park is the Dudhsagar Falls, the water of which is considered holy by the locals.

You can see it from the Mumbai-Goa express train that runs on the bridge across the waterfall or take a jeep safari into the forests. If you have time you can go for a private spice plantation tour here or simply save that for the rest of your trip.

Our Recommended Stay(s):

The Crown Goa for the fantastic location and an amazing breakfast spread

Day2- Drive through the Konkan Coast

Karwar long weekend trip

Next morning, have a great Goan breakfast and set off for a drive from Sonalium, Goa to Karwar in coastal Karnataka.

You will come across some beautiful white churches of South Goa on your way to Karnataka. You can drive about 260 km straight to the Sharavati Valley of Karnataka or give in to the temptation to stay at Karwar or Gokarna for one night.

The long drive will take you along the mesmerizing Konkan coast with the Green Mountains on your left and the Arabian Sea on your right.

I would suggest you stay near the Devbagh beach resort to experience the tranquil beauty that inspired the poetic genius Rabindranath Tagore in his youth.

You can visit the Indian Naval Museum and a Shivaji fort during the day and relax at the Tagore beach in the evening.

western ghats trip plan

Sterling Karwa r for location, service and COVID safety measures.

Check other Hotels in Karwar .

Day 3: Drive to Jog Falls and Honnemaradu

western ghats trip plan

It will take you about 4 hours to drive from Karwar to Jog Falls. You will need a little lesser time if you chose to stay at Gokarna instead. If you start at say 10 am after a heavy brunch, you will reach the Jog Falls at 2 pm.

Watch one of the tallest cascades in India from this viewpoint. Take a boat ride in the golden waters of Honnemaradu Lake. Otherwise, you can skip the Honnemaradu Lake and head straight to the Agumbe rainforest which is 147 km away from Jog Falls.

At 825 meters above sea level, Agumbe is an ecological spot famous for sunset. I missed Agumbe on my trip to Shimoga last year, but I can’t stop talking about how beautiful the lakes of Shimoga were.

So if you want to drive a little less and relax at the Honnemaradu Lake, you wouldn’t regret it. This can be your starting point for a 5-day Western Ghats road trip from Bangalore. Just follow the same route from Day 3 to Day 8.

Related: Trip to Shimoga and Jog Falls

Our Recommendation: Royal Orchid, Shimoga f or location and affordable luxury

Check other Hotels in Shimoga .

Day 4 – Drive to Madikeri, Coorg

western ghats trip plan

Coorg is often called the Scotland of South India because of the vast grasslands, misty mountains, and temperate climate. Coorg is a huge district of Karnataka which earlier used to be a separate state. There are two major towns where you can stay in Coorg – Madikeri or Virajpet .

If you have only half a day at Coorg, I will recommend you to stay in Madikeri, as you can see check out some of the best attractions within a small radius. Start with Abbey Falls, then visit the coffee estate and then walk into the Madikeri Fort.

Watch the sunset from Raja’s seat to make up for the sunset point at Agumbe. If you have time, you can drive 35 km to the famous Namdroling Monastery at Bylapkuppe before you retire at the Madikeri Fort. Bylakuppe is a mini-Tibet in South India.

You can also choose Chikmagalur as a stop for the day instead of Coorg.

Our Recommendation: Taj Madikeri f or a luxurious stay in the cradle of nature

Day 5: Drive to Bandipur Tiger Reserve, Karnataka

western ghats trip plan

Waterfalls, hills, and sea are being done, it's time to experience the real wildlife of Western Ghats. Bandipur, Nagarhole (also in Karnataka), Wayanad (Kerala), and Mudumalai (Tamil Nadu) are four interconnected national parks that the largest Tiger Zone of India both by area and by number (an estimated 570 tigers in the zone, most of which is in Karnataka).

In order to protect wildlife, connecting roads are narrow and transport is highly regulated. You can visit any of these national parks and go on a jeep safari to see leopards, black panthers, tigers, spotted deer, sambar, elephants, peafowls, and many more exotic wild creatures.

Related: Bandipur tiger safari

Day 6: Drive to Kodaikanal

western ghats trip plan

From Bandipur, you can visit one of the best hill stations of Tamil Nadu -Ooty, Coonoor or Kodaikanal. I am fortunate to have visited all of them but my favorite is Kodaikanal. Nestled in the Palani hills, Kodaikanal stands at a height of almost 2200 meters above sea level. Due to this elevation, you can enjoy the cool climate and pure air throughout the year at Kodaikanal. It is 314 km away from Bandipur.

Start early so that you can reach Kodaikanal by 5 pm. What you can enjoy now is an evening walk at the famous Coakers Walk and other parks in Kodaikanal. Read more about places to visit in Kodaikanal .

Our Recommendation: The Tamara Kodai for a great location and fantastic ambience.

Day 7: Drive to Munnar, Kerala

western ghats trip plan

Save the best for the last they say. So there is no better way to end the road trip than with a scenic drive along the rolling hills of Munnar. Can I just say once and for all that Munnar is the most beautiful hill station in South India? Wherever you look you can see lush greenery – either forests or tea gardens. stay in Munnar for at least one full day to experience the beauty of nature. Walk into any of the tea gardens, visit the Matupetty dam and go kayaking to watch the elephants at Anairankal Park.

Munnar is beautiful all year round but due to its temperate weather, it is a great summer destination in India .

Our Recommendation: Fort Munnar for budget-friendly stay and Sterling Munnar for affordable luxury. Both these hotels are located away from the main town of Munnar in the Chinnakanal region.

Day 8 (optional): Kolukkumalai

If you have another day in Munnar you can do a half-day trip to the highest tea estate and tea factory in the world, the Kolukkumalai tea estate . Taste the orange pekoe tea at the highest tea estate of the world while watching the clouds at the nose level.

Some Quick Driving Tips for the Western  Ghats

One of the reasons why I recommend the  Western Ghats road trip so much is because the roads are pretty awesome. And remember that you can't say that for the roads of India in general.

In fact, the road to all the places I mentioned here is better than most of the city roads I've seen.

Having said all that, you will still be driving in the hills, sometimes through really narrow bends, lots of hairpin turns, and high altitudes.

To add to that, you may encounter some of the worst drivers on the way. So here are a few tips you should keep in mind.

  • Avoid driving in the hills in the dark.
  • It's very important to adjust your seat so that you don't have too much of a blind spot on the right-hand side. In India, you drive on the left.
  • Have ample legroom so that you can fully engage the clutch whenever required.
  • Maintain your lane in the hills, but always keep about 4ft-5ft space on the left when you are taking a turn.
  • Respect the trucks – they are the king of roads. Respect all large commercial vehicles in general. They are usually the most disciplined drivers on the road.
  • Most importantly, never drink and drive.
  • Save the Road Trip Checklist for hassle-free travel.
  • Download your favorite songs on Amazon Music, so that you don't have to depend on internet connectivity for grooving to music on your road trips

Western Ghats Road Trip – Some closing thoughts

I hope you enjoyed reading this as much as I loved reliving the moments while I wrote. If you liked it, don't forget to share it with your friends. You can pin the image below to save it for later and subscribe for weekly post alerts.

The Western Ghats of India are truly special. Just like the Himalayas of the north, the Sundarbans of the East, and the Thar Desert in the West.

Personally, I don’t understand this extravagance in creating new landmarks for tourism like the Statue of Unity. There is so much already to preserve.

India is a country loaded with natural and architectural wonders that deserve preservation.

The illegal mining in the forests of Goa has caused great hazards for the rare species that thrived there. Recently there are demands of widening the roads in Bandipur which will lead to further destruction of wildlife.

Irresponsible tourists often cause forest fires in humid forests that are not prone to natural fires. It pains me to see plastic bottles littered in the most beautiful places of the Western Ghats , wherever there are more tourists.

The same reason why I included slightly offbeat places in this itinerary, most of which are highly regulated.

Can we not invest in preserving this glorious gift of God instead? Through this blog, I will continue my endeavor of raising awareness for responsible tourism. Have you been on a road trip in the Western Ghats? What is your favorite place? Tell me in the comment section.

Hey Sinjana, this is awesome! I had never thought of a week long road trip on the western ghats. To me it always meant the drive between Pune and Mumbai. I’d love to do this trip sometime and your post perfect for it.

Thanks Jyoti. Yes during my stay in Mumbai, Lonavla, khandala ,malshej ghats etc were the only places that we knew. However, the chain of hill stations in the south are great.

Wow that was quite a drive..I have visited these places individually but never at one go..I love long drives and would love to hit the roads

Thanks Madhu. Glad you liked it.

The Kaas Plateau will its abundance of wildflowers looks magical! Thanks for the itinerary…we’d love to try this route.

Thanks Mohana. I borrowed the picture of Kas plateau from my friend. It’s on my 2019 plans.

I love road trips! Never really considered doing one in India, but it’s definitely on my list now. Such an awesome post!

Your guide has made my road trip through Western Ghats easy. Thanks for the effort and helping fellow travellers. Cheers

I have done this stretch in bits and pieces and yes, loved it too. I want to now do the Konkan side above Goa towards Ratnagiri and further down till Diu. I have heard that it is incredibly beautiful. In the stretch you did, as you hit Honnavar near Jog Falls, there is a place called Apsarakonda that is absolutely gorgeous. The next time if you get here, you should try that. Loved reading through your journey and seeing the lovely pics.

Thanks Ami. I have done all these but on separate shorter road trips and have stayed in those places. Will watch out for Apsarakonda next time we go.

Western Ghats looks amazing. Never heard of it before your post. Love to go, especially to tiger reserve.

Thanks Sue. The Western Ghats are amazing

I am from Maharashtra and am always been in love with the western ghats. Especially in the rains when the greenery comes alive. Jog falls, Coorg, Kodaikanal are magical.. The best trip I ever had was to Coorg.

Your road trip sure sounds like a fruitful one! The scenery is amazing, especially those at Jog falls. The tiger reserve also seems like a wonderful (albeit heart-stopping) experience.

I love the idea that you’ve turned your travels into a road trip, that’s such a great idea. I absolutely love waterfalls, and feel like I could sit and listen to one all day long. Your waterfall recommendations would be on my list for sure. Are these areas family-friendly?

South India in general is very family friendly. Yes, all these areas are perfect for family trips.

I’ve never heard of the western ghats of India until now. There are some incredible places to visit on the way; Jog Falls is particularly beautiful as is Munnar and all that green! I’m also intrigued by Coorg, the Scotland of India, it sounds amazing.

That’s like India in a nutshell! It seems to cover most of the things tourist should see. I think I would love to get an overview of India like that, because I have never been there

Thanks Alexander. This is just a narrow strip of India but yes,it’s very beautiful and has everything for a traveler.

hi, this looks like so much fun. We LOVE a road trip and whenever we can, this is the way we travel. Ho safe is it with kids. Sorry but never have been to India but this looks so beautiful and quite family friendly. Would love to see the tigers for sure.

Thanks Corina. All the regions discussed here are family friendly. Jeep safaris might be problematic if the kids cry or want to move about. Otherwise everything is safe.

In 2017 we made it to Munnar but we should have travelled further. The Western Ghats look beautiful. I enjoy waterfalls and visiting Jog Falls is now high on my list when I next travel to India. Thanks for highlighting this area.

What a great trip! I’d love to see the sunset at the “Scotland of India” and that Tiger reserve seems like an awesome experience too! Although I’m curious if there have been any fatalities there. hehe

Wow, what an incredible adventure! I’m coming to India next month and will definitely consider taking this route

This looks amazing post. I’ve been till Mumbai so far in Southern India but I’m planning to visit Coorg first.

Super cool article. Western ghats are always open for the love of roads and the view that it gives out cannot be surpassed. I have ridden to jog falls, munnar, bandipur and coorg as listed and to be honest it just remembered me my days riding through those ghat sections while reading. Thanks for sharing.

This looks an amazing Indian itinerary. I love it when people do all the hard work for me lol. And if I came as close to a tiger as in that photo, my life would be complete:)

This is a beautiful part of India. I have seen the Dudhsagar Falls from the train and would have loved to have had the time to explore further, they were stunning

I love the Western Ghats and it is good that you shared an amazing itinerary. I did this trip from Gujarat when I was in High school but till Mangalore and till there all was very beautiful. But now I am again thinking to take my kids with all reference points listed in your post. My favorite location is driving through Konkan coast.

I always got through pictures first. Some may call it a bad habit and say that it is unfair to judge a post by the photos. Sorry, I can’t help it. The tiger purposefully moving along the road certainly caught enough of my attention to raise curiosity about what’s going on there. More I read more I realized that sooner or later I have to visit India in general and Goa in particular. Waterfalls are my weakness. Whenever I go, I try to look for them. Hence, the Jog Falls found their way on my virtual bucket list. The only thing that’s left is to actually schedule a trip.

Thanks Elena. The tiger is in her own home. It’s we who visited the place through the dusty road.

This looks and sounds like an epic road trip. We love road trips and this would be right up our streets. The waterfalls look spectacular and ending the trip by the tea plantations would suit me down to the ground.

I have always dreamt of doing this long trip visiting all that the Western Ghats has to offer. Have visited Coorg, Goa and Udupi separately but would love to do this stretch all-together again. Thanks for attaching the road map. This will help a lot in planning out the route

This is definitely one of the most elaborate posts that I have read on Western Ghats. I felt nostalgic too to see some of the places in Goa and Kerala and in Maharashtra. Western Ghats are rightly the hotbed for variety of flora, fauna, adventure activities and more. And road trips are the best way to explore them. I did no know hat Sahyadri Mountains are also called “the Great Escarpment of India”. Thanks for sharing that.

I have had a chance to visit some parts of the Western Ghat when I was based in India and must say a lot on offer here. There is so much to see and do from mountains to beaches and wildlife. I was not aware that the Sahyadri Mountain range is the oldest mountain range in India so some great learning here thanks. I particularly like the Konkan coast and the food around the area as well. Overall it seems to be a great ideas to drive down this route and have a great few days.

A wonderful post…. Ideal for the monsoons to hit the road and visit around.. Maybe you must try out BR Hills, Kolli Hills as well, heard a great deal about them from friends…

Hi Srikanth, sure. I have been to BR hills already. I have just selected te top 15 out of all the places I visited.

India is definatly on my bucketlist, I would love to go there for a month and explore 🙂

That’s a great idea!

I enjoyed reading your article. I have been planning a road trip in Western Ghats for years. I did Indore to Ratnagiri in Nov 2018 by my car and am looking for road status and optimized route now. I have done Indore- Pune -Bangalore-Pondicheri few years ago by car. I have visited Munnar, Kodai etc much before, but not by car. Now I am eager to do Western Ghats. I would appreciate, if you can give more info. Ravi

Thanks Ravi. You can check out the map in this post and plan out an itinerary based on the number of days you have. Mail me at [email protected] with your exact requirements.

Hi! This was a beautiful article. Thanks a lot for the tips. I’m going on a road trip along the Western Ghats this December. But we will be starting from Varkala in Kerala and going towards Goa. Any other suggestions along that route?

Thanks Abhilash for your kind comment. You must certainly stop at Alapuzha and Bekal Fort (Kasargod) in Kerala, Udupi , Gokarna and Karwar in Karnataka on your way to Goa. That’s on the shortest route through the coastline. If you want to enjoy the Western Ghats take a slighlty longer route through Chinnakanal, Munnar , Madikeri and Shimoga or Agumbe.

I m planning to explore western Ghats in the month of Dec will it be good to visit in the month

Hi Bidyarani, it will be great in December. The weather will be nice but most waterfalls will be dry

Have visited some parts of the Western Ghats. Will revert back to your post for the rest, whenver that happens.

Thanks a lot!

In the new pandemic situation, road trips are surely the in thing, and best option for holiday makers. Love the extensive list you have shared in this post.

Wow, this post for a while took me to the virtual tour along the western ghats. this trip is highly recommended to explore Western coastal. Well researched and planned trip. Look forward to a week of the drive, and saving it till I plan this route.

In India we drive on the left. Other than that very informative.

Oops.. that was a silly mistake. Thanks for pointing it out.

Best of Southern India with Houseboat Stay

Overall this was as the reviews state a great tour. However on arrival we had a driver but no tour leader with limited English & no detailed itinerary of the tour including what are options etc & accommodation at each location. We were also the only two people on the tour. Karni was helpful to contact and assist. All hotels were good except the Camellia & Etternia. It is out in the middle of nowhere & the road getting there is windy, rough & steep. It has great potential with a balcony overlooking the forest & across the valley but the bathroom in our room was filthy & had a really strong smell of septic tank! The staff were good at getting a mattress to sleep on as only 1 king bed. Fine for couples but not for a father & daughter. The houseboat was fantastic - though had a king bed it was split into 2 singles for us. Our chef Lebok was sensational who prepared amazing food. All the hotels could do with putting hooks in the bathroom as no where to hang anything including towels, toilet bags etc. and having a small fridge to keep water cold was great in those that had one as well. Jinto our driver from Trawell was fantastic - very confident, considerate & caring. Though limited English he would go out of his way to assist with any request. Highly recommend Rochas in Munnar & Tusker Cafe in Thekkary to eat. Would recommend to everyone to do a houseboat trip as very enjoyable & Relaxin was a fantastic company. Kerala is a beautiful area of India.

5 Days of Bandipur National Park with Wayanad(ALL INCLUSIVE) Tour

5 Days of Bandipur National Park with Wayanad(ALL INCLUSIVE)

We have opportunity to go on a 5-day trip to Bandipur National Park with Wayanad, and it was an unforgettable experience. From the thrilling safaris to the serene nature walks, every moment of the trip was filled with excitement and wonder. Firstly, the all-inclusive package provided by Wayanad was a great value for money. All our accommodations, meals, and activities were taken care of, leaving us with nothing to worry about except enjoying our trip. The accommodations were comfortable and clean, and the food provided was delicious and authentic. The highlight of the trip was, of course, the safaris in Bandipur National Park. We had the chance to spot a variety of wildlife, including elephants, tigers, and deer. Our guide was knowledgeable and shared interesting facts about the animals and the park. The park itself was well-maintained and we could see the efforts put in by the authorities to preserve the natural habitat of the animals. Apart from the safaris, we also went on nature walks in the surrounding areas. These walks were a great way to immerse ourselves in the beauty of the park and get up close with the flora and fauna. We also visited a nearby tribal village, which was a unique experience. We got to interact with the locals and learn about their way of life. Wayanad also took us on a day trip to the nearby Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, which was equally mesmerizing. The sanctuary was less crowded and we were able to spot more animals here, including some rare species of birds. The scenic views and peaceful atmosphere of the sanctuary made it a memorable experience. Overall, the 5 days spent in Bandipur National Park with Wayanad were truly amazing. The trip was well-organized, and the staff was friendly and accommodating. They went above and beyond to ensure that we had a comfortable and enjoyable trip. I would highly recommend this trip to anyone looking for an adventure-filled getaway in the lap of nature. It was a perfect blend of wildlife, nature, and culture, and I can't wait to go back again.

Bandipur and Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary Tour from Bangalore(ALL INCLUSIVE) Tour

Bandipur and Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary Tour from Bangalore(ALL INCLUSIVE)

We were looking a thrilling adventure in the midst of nature? Then we found Mytravelcon and booked Bandipur and Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary Tour from Bangalore! This all-inclusive tour was the perfect opportunity to escape the hustle and bustle of city life and immerse ourselves in the stunning beauty of South India's wilderness. Bandipur and Mudumalai are two of the most popular wildlife sanctuaries in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, respectively. Both are home to an incredible array of exotic flora and fauna, including tigers, leopards, elephants, deer, sloth bears, and much more. The tour took us deep into the heart of these sanctuaries, where we had the chance to witness these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. But the tour was not just about wildlife watching. We could also able to explore the stunning landscapes of the Western Ghats, one of the world's most biodiverse regions. From lush green forests to rolling hills to sparkling waterfalls, the scenery was truly breathtaking. We had plenty of opportunities to take photos and soak in the beauty of your surroundings. The tour was designed to be as hassle-free as possible. All transportation, meals, and accommodations were included in the package, so we can sit back and relax while they take care of everything. Hemender arranged to pick up from our hotel in Bangalore and drove us to Bandipur, where we spent the first night in a cozy resort. The next day, they took us on a safari through the sanctuary, followed by a visit to the nearby Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary. We spent the second night in a comfortable jungle lodge before returning to Bangalore on the third day. Overall, the Bandipur and Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary Tour from Bangalore was an unforgettable experience that we won't forget. Since we are a nature lover and wildlife enthusiast, we were just looking for a break from the city, this tour had given everything to us. At the last, this tour was the adventure of a lifetime!

The Magical Kerala Tour Tour

The Magical Kerala Tour

Kerala the most southwestern state in India is amazing. Arabian Sea beaches and backwaters to beautiful mountainous inland regions. Dijeesh our driver was excellent, always ready to adapt to our wishes. Instead of the boat trip in the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary I would recommend one of the nature walks. Enjoy the houseboat ride, a highlight of the Kerala tour.

6 Night / 7 Day Kerala Tour Package Tour

6 Night / 7 Day Kerala Tour Package

I booked for this “small group tour” 4 or 5 days before its starting date. In 24 hours, my booking was confirmed. On my first day of the tour, it was revealed that because no one else has signed up for these days, I was the only member of the tour, the driver will be my mate for the entire trip. I called the driver a driver, not a guide, because you would expect storytelling, experience sharing, maybe some form of entertainment by the guide. But he speaks rather basic English, with heavy accent. Our conversation’s limited almost exclusively to driving and eating arrangements. A few times we went through phone calls with a friend of his who speaks decent English. The driver made stops at friends’ herbal medicine garden, antique shop, Jeep safari, ... etc. The friends are usually friendly and respectful, so as long as you feel comfortable haggling, you will likely enjoyed the experience. A few things about the four hotels I spent nights at. Only one of them had a working WiFi that I could use. One of them had water turning cold a few minutes into a shower, and occasional power outages. But otherwise they are good hotels. Most of places listed on the itinerary require separate entrance tickets. So be prepared. Overall, the experience has been interesting for me. I learned quite a bit about the places, the local people, the tourism industry. If you consider yourself somewhat adventurous, and have a little flexibility with budget, this could be a good experience.

What people love about Western Ghats Tours

All went smoothly, good srandard of accommodation and flexibility in the itinerary. Driver spoke reasonable English so we were able to communicate and he made some suggestions which were appreciated. Houseboat was relaxing, great crew and experience.
It was an incredible and well organized trip. We highly recommend!!

Exploring India’s Western Ghats: trains, tea and terrific wildlife spotting

western ghats trip plan

Straddling the states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala, this mountain range delivers scenic tea plantations, memorable train journeys, amazing wildlife and more.

India’s lush, forest-cloaked Western Ghats  are an untamed natural world.  Running parallel to the coastline for 995 miles (1600km) all the way from Gujarat to deep-south Tamil Nadu , these hills also home to waves of emerald-green tea plantations and a crop of lively hill stations.

In the 19th century, British colonizers sought refuge from the sweltering lowland heat in these cool, mist-shrouded mountains of native shola (virgin forest), establishing South India ’s string of eccentric villages or what are known locally as hill stations. Today, it is mostly Indian travelers who flock to the Western Ghats seeking cool air, natural beauty and green serenity.

On average, these mountains reach 3000ft (915m); in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, they tower over 8200ft (2500m) high – especially in the Nilgiri Hills and the Palani Hills, home to South India’s most famous hill stations. Just west across the border in Kerala , some of the world’s highest-altitude tea plantations sprawl around Munnar .

Beyond all this, the Western Ghats’ many hauntingly beautiful national parks and tiger reserves provide a home for elephants, langur monkeys, chital deer, gaur (Indian bison), big cats and other creatures. Most of these natural spaces are part of the Unesco-designated Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve – a highly biodiverse 2130-sq-mile (5520-sq-km) area that crosses northwest Tamil Nadu into Kerala and Karnataka .

A Nilgiri Mountain Railway train leaves a narrow tunnel between Mettupalayam and Udagamandalam in South India

Hop on the Nilgiri Mountain Railway to Tamil Nadu’s hill stations

One of South India’s greatest thrills for train lovers is catching the celebrated narrow-gauge Nilgiri Mountain Railway to the hill stations of Ooty (Udhagamandalam; elev 7350ft / 2240m) and Coonoor (5640ft / 1720m). Awarded World Heritage status by Unesco, the blue-and-cream-colored “toy” train trundles between Mettupalayam (near Coimbatore ) in northwest Tamil Nadu and Ooty (via Coonoor). Along the way, it traverses tunnels and zips across bridges, passing ever-more-spectacular forest and tea-plantation views. You might even spy a wild elephant pushing through the undergrowth.

Like its Himalayan siblings, Ooty was founded in the early 19th century, when Madras (now Chennai ) was the capital of British India’s Madras Presidency. Often called the “Queen of Hill Stations,” this is today Tamil Nadu’s most popular hill station, and also the springboard for exploring the wildlife-rich Mudumalai Tiger Reserve nearby.

Ooty’s Hindu temples, lively bazaar and pedal-boat-sprinkled lake give way to flower-wreathed lanes where colonial-era buildings like the red-hued 1867 Nilgiri Library still stand. Others have been reimagined as exquisite heritage hotels; try 1855 bungalow Lymond House or the early 19th-century Savoy . Yet Ooty’s restaurants have a firmly South Indian flavor, and you’ll feast on tasty idlis , vadas , dosas and pure-veg thalis aplenty here.

Encircled by emerald-green tea plantations, bustling Coonoor sits 12.5 miles (20km) southeast of Ooty. Upper Coonoor makes a more peaceful alternative Nilgiri base to Ooty, with easy access to superb viewpoints, the 50-year-old Highfield Tea Estate , and heritage accommodation such as the 1900s bungalow 180° McIver. Meanwhile, quiet Kotagiri (5905ft / 1800m), 19 miles (30km) east of Ooty, is the Nilgiris’ original hill station; its earthy-red Sullivan Memorial dates from 1819 and was once the house of Ooty’s British founder John Sullivan.

Before the 19th century, the Nilgiris’ sole inhabitants were various tribal communities, including the Toda, who live in the Ooty area and are known for their distinctive black-and-red embroidered shawls. The Tribal Research Centre Museum , 6.25 miles (10km) southwest of Ooty, delves into the lives and traditions of these now-threatened communities.

Nilgiri Hills

Explore Kodaikanal, the princess of the Palani Hills

Ringed by the protected Palani Hills 155 miles (250km) southeast of Ooty, Tamil Nadu’s 6890ft(2100m)-high “Princess of Hill Stations” is Kodaikanal (Kodai), founded in 1845 by American missionaries escaping malaria in the Madurai lowlands. Often veiled in mist, it has its own distinct character thanks to its international school, organic-fired cuisine and popularity with Indian weekenders.

Rowboats bob on the star-shaped lake, and the hazy surrounding hillsides are carpeted with shola forest and – found only in the Western Ghats –  kurinji shrubs, which blossom in lavender-blue just once every 12 years (next expected in 2030). Walks thread through forests to horizon-reaching viewpoints, shimmering lakes, and the budget-traveler haven of Vattakanal village (3 miles southwest of Kodai), which has the sociable vibe of a miniature South Indian Manali .

Kodai’s accommodation scene includes eco-friendly Cinnabar homestay and the five-star lake-view Carlton (a colonial-era mansion). Or book one of the sustainability-focused, design-led villas offered by LuxUnlock , a switched-on local operator with tempting private stays across the Western Ghats. To escape it all, retreat to eco-focused Elephant Valley in the Palani Hills below, where elephants wander the 120-acre grounds.

Tea plantations around Lamb’s Rock viewpoint near Coonoor

Dive into tea plantations, spice crops and cooking classes in Munnar, Kerala

Just over the border from Tamil Nadu in serene Kerala, Munnar (5000ft / 1524m) is the bustling hub of South India’s major tea-growing area. Much like Ooty, Munnar’s commercial, traffic-choked center fades fast as you venture out into its mellow, enticingly green valleys and hills, where cottages hide amid the glinting leaves of manicured tea and cardamom plantations. You can join guided treks to high-altitude mountain outlooks and tea estates, or learn the secrets of Keralan cuisine at a cooking class with respected food writer Nimi Sunilkumar .

Munnar also has a thriving homestay scene, with local families welcoming visitors. Gorgeous Rose Gardens shines for its cooking courses, spice gardens and coconut-pancake breakfasts, all set in a 1920 heritage bungalow run on solar and biomass power.

Elephants roaming in Mudumalai tiger reserve

Spot rare wildlife in the Western Ghats’ national parks and tiger reserves

A huge part of Western Ghats’ allure lies in its many national parks and tiger reserves, which create a vast, contiguous protected area crisscrossing between Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. According to India’s 2022 tiger census, over 800 tigers prowl these wilds. You’ll be lucky to spot one, but keep your eyes peeled, as there’s always a chance.

The secluded, un-touristed reaches of northern Kerala’s 133-sq-mile (345-sq-km) Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary are arguably your best bet for encountering South India’s wild elephants; some 150 tigers also roam here. In southern Kerala, around 40 tigers and 900 elephants, plus sambar deer, wild boar and langurs, patrol the dense evergreen forests of Periyar Tiger Reserve , one of India’s most extensive (357 sq miles / 925 sq km) and beloved parks. With over 100 elusive tigers, luscious Mudumalai Tiger Reserve in Tamil Nadu has one of India’s highest tiger-population densities; more regularly spotted are its elephants, jackals, langurs, gaurs, deer and peacocks.

West of Mysuru (Mysore), Karnataka’s Nagarhole National Park  is home to one of the world’s greatest concentrations of wild Asian elephants, joined by tigers, leopards, dholes (wild dogs), chital, gaurs and langurs. Many of these signature species also flit through Bandipur National Park just to the southeast, which encompasses 340 sq miles (880 sq km) at Karnataka’s junction with Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

Access to these carefully guarded reserves is via official 4WD or minibus tour only; some parks might also offer guided treks, but since regulations change often it’s best to check on the ground. You’ll dine and sleep at hands-on wildlife lodges, such as Nagarhole’s lakeside Waterwoods Lodge , Mudumalai’s long-established Jungle Hut and Bandipur’s stylish Dhole’s Den , or at welcoming homestays such as Green View in Periyar and Varnam Homestay in Wayanad.

For a thoroughly off-the-beaten-track Western Ghats wildlife experience, seek out Parambikulam Tiger Reserve in Kerala, or Tamil Nadu’s Anamalai Tiger Reserve , where Sinna Dorai’s Bungalow adds tea-plantation luxury.

A bus on the road, Devikulam Tea Plantation, Munnar, Kerala, India

How to visit the Western Ghats

Many travelers combine a trip to the Western Ghats with other parts of South India. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is handy for reaching Ooty and Coonoor from within Tamil Nadu, and heading onward to Kotagiri and Mudumalai Tiger Reserve. Apart from that, all access is by road, which means a bus or a car; booking a driver with their own car is a popular choice. Given the lengthy travel times, staying at least a couple of days in each hill station or national park is a great idea, particularly if you’re hoping to spot wildlife.

Munnar and Periyar Tiger Reserve are easily combined with a trip to Kerala’s southern coast and cultural capital Kochi (Cochin). Both Kochi and Kerala’s capital Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum) have international airports; buses take five to six hours from Kochi and around eight from Thiruvananthapuram to both Munnar and Periyar, and there are also five-hour buses between Munnar and Periyar. Wayanad is a little trickier to reach; the closest airports are at Kannur and Kozhikode (Calicut) in northern Kerala; buses run from both cities to the Wayanad area in around three hours, or you can take a direct six-hour bus from Kochi.

For Kodaikanal, there are plenty of buses from within Tamil Nadu (including to/from the popular temple town of Madurai in around four hours), as well as Bengaluru (Bangalore) in Karnataka (around 12 hours). You can also catch a train from Chennai to Kodai Road, followed by a three-hour bus. Karnataka’s national parks have good bus links to Mysuru, Bengaluru and Ooty.

Understand [ edit ]

western ghats trip plan

The Western Ghats are older than the Himalayas. They influence Indian monsoon weather patterns by intercepting the rain-laden monsoon winds that sweep in from the southwest during late summer. The range runs north to south along the western edge of the Deccan Plateau and separates the plateau from the narrow coastal plain along the Arabian Sea.

The range starts near the Tapi River and runs about 1,600 km (990 mi) along the western coast before ending at Swamithope near the southern tip of mainland India.

The Western Ghats are India's bio-diversity hot spot and a nice, chilly place in the otherwise hot and tropical southern part of India. Astonishing wildlife, beautiful tea and coffee plantations, unspoiled forests and a green, hilly landscape will make sure that your trip to this mountain range will become one of your favorites. The mild climate will ease your body and leave you non sweating but this region is much more than just relaxing. Trekking is a must for every sporty tourist and maybe you will find some hidden waterfall which invites you to take a refreshing shower.

Get in [ edit ]

Most destinations on the Western Ghats can be reached by road, train or plane. On the western side, the Western Ghats can be reached from Surat , Mumbai , Panaji , Karwar , Udupi , Mangalore , Kannur , Kozhikode , Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram . On the eastern side, the Western Ghats can be reached from Nashik , Pune , Satara , Kolhapur , Belgaum , Hubli-Dharwad , Shimoga , Mysore and Coimbatore .

Get around [ edit ]

The Western Ghats have two narrow-gauge heritage railways, the Matheran Hill Railway (MHR) and the Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR). The Konkan Railway also provides a picturesque route through the Western Ghats.

See and do [ edit ]

The Western Ghats are known for their picturesque mountains and forests. Trekking is one of the most popular adventure sports for nature enthusiasts to discover the natural beauty of the Western Ghats. The treks range from very simple to absolutely tough. Some reserved forests arrange treks into the forest and also provide camping inside the forest.

Stay safe [ edit ]

Beware of the landslides caused by torrential rains.

  • Description

Older than the Himalaya mountains, the mountain chain of the Western Ghats represents geomorphic features of immense importance with unique biophysical and ecological processes.

Outstanding Universal Value

Brief synthesis

The Western Ghats are internationally recognized as a region of immense global importance for the conservation of biological diversity, besides containing areas of high geological, cultural and aesthetic values. A chain of mountains running parallel to India’s western coast, approximately 30-50 km inland, the Ghats traverse the States of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra and Gujarat. These mountains cover an area of around 140,000 km² in a 1,600 km long stretch that is interrupted only by the 30 km Palghat Gap at around 11°N.

Older than the great Himalayan mountain chain, the Western Ghats of India are a geomorphic feature of immense global importance. The Outstanding Universal Value of the Western Ghats is manifested in the region’s unique and fascinating influence on large-scale biophysical and ecological processes over the entire Indian peninsula. The mountains of the Western Ghats and their characteristic montane forest ecosystems influence the Indian monsoon weather patterns that mediate the warm tropical climate of the region, presenting one of the best examples of the tropical monsoon system on the planet. The Ghats act as a key barrier, intercepting the rain-laden monsoon winds that sweep in from the south-west during late summer.

A significant characteristic of the Western Ghats is the exceptionally high level of biological diversity and endemism. This mountain chain is recognized as one of the world’s eight ‘hottest hotspots’ of biological diversity along with Sri Lanka. The forests of the Western Ghats include some of the best representatives of non equatorial tropical evergreen forests in the world. At least 325 globally threatened (IUCN Red Data List) species occur in the Western Ghats. The globally threatened flora and fauna in the Western Ghats are represented by 229 plant species, 31 mammal species, 15 bird species, 43 amphibian species, 5 reptile species and 1 fish species. Of the total 325 globally threatened species in the Western Ghats, 129 are classified as Vulnerable, 145 as Endangered and 51 as Critically Endangered.

Criterion (ix): The Western Ghats region demonstrates speciation related to the breakup of the ancient landmass of Gondwanaland in the early Jurassic period; secondly to the formation of India into an isolated landmass and the thirdly to the Indian landmass being pushed together with Eurasia. Together with favourable weather patterns and a high gradient being present in the Ghats, high speciation has resulted. The Western Ghats is an “Evolutionary Ecotone” illustrating “Out of Africa” and “Out of Asia” hypotheses on species dispersal and vicariance . [tb1]

Criterion (x): The Western Ghats contain exceptional levels of plant and animal diversity and endemicity for a continental area. In particular, the level of endemicity for some of the 4-5,000 plant species recorded in the Ghats is very high: of the nearly 650 tree species found in the Western Ghats, 352 (54%) are endemic. Animal diversity is also exceptional, with amphibians (up to 179 species, 65% endemic), reptiles (157 species, 62% endemic), and fishes (219 species, 53% endemic). Invertebrate biodiversity, once better known, is likely also to be very high (with some 80% of tiger beetles endemic). A number of flagship mammals occur in the property, including parts of the single largest population of globally threatened ‘landscape’ species such as the Asian Elephant, Gaur and Tiger. Endangered species such as the lion-tailed Macaque, Nilgiri Tahr and Nilgiri Langur are unique to the area. The property is also key to the conservation of a number of threatened habitats, such as unique seasonally mass-flowering wildflower meadows, Shola forests and Myristica swamps.

The property is made up of 39 component parts grouped into 7 sub-clusters.  The serial approach is justified in principle from a biodiversity perspective because all 39 components belong to the same biogeographic province, and remain as isolated remnants of previous contiguous forest. The justification for developing a serial approach rather than just identifying one large protected area to represent the biodiversity of the Western Ghats is due to the high degree of endemism, meaning that species composition from the very north of the mountains to 1,600km south varies greatly, and no one site could tell the story of the richness of these mountains.  The formulation of this complex serial nomination has evolved through a consultative process drawing on scientific analysis from various sources. [tb5]  The 39 component parts grouped into 7 sub-clusters together reflect the Outstanding Universal Value of the property and capture the range of biological diversity and species endemism in this vast landscape.

  Protection and management requirements

The 39 component parts of this serial property fall under a number of protection regimes, ranging from Tiger Reserves, National Parks, Wildlife Sanctuaries, and Reserved Forests. All components are owned by the State and are subject to stringent protection under laws including the Wildlife (Protection) Act of 1972, the Indian Forest Act of 1927, and the Forest Conservation Act (1980). Through these laws the components are under the control of the Forestry Department and the Chief Wildlife Warden, providing legal protection. 40% of the property lies outside of the formal protected area system, mostly in Reserved Forests, which are legally protected and effectively managed. The Forest Conservation Act (1980) provides the regulatory framework to protect them from infrastructure development.

Integrating the management of 39 components across 4 States is a challenge, for which a 3-tier governance mechanism is required that will operate at the Central, State and Site levels to provide effective coordination and oversight to the 39 components. A Western Ghats Natural Heritage Management Committee (WGNHMC) under the auspices of the Ministry of Environment of Forests (MoEF), Government of India to deal with coordination and integration issues is already functional. All 39 components in the 7 sub-clusters are managed under specific management / working plans duly approved by the State/Central governments. The livelihood concerns of the local communities are regulated by the Forest Rights Acts, 2006 and their participation in governance is ensured through Village Ecodevelopment Committees (VECs).

Motorcycle touring in India: Five Western Ghat Trip Plans

Motorcycle touring in India: Five Western Ghat Trip Plans

I magine a time around 80 million years ago, as the Indian subcontinent is drifting northward, it crosses the Re-Union hotspot , triggering a series of volcanic eruptions that result in the formation of this 1600 km ‘welt-like’ feature parallel to the Western coast of India.

Rich soil, a tropical climate and the monsoon rains combine to form such a force of creation, that this mountain range is considered one of the ten bio-diversity hotspots in the world.

Alternating between the Western ghats and the West coast, this may be some of the most surreal road- tripping experiences; motorcycle touring in India has to offer. The circuits are intended as a pure reference, as they have been broken down as single day legs, that cover an average of 200 km/day.

beach west coast India goa

However the magic of this region lies in slow, immersive travel. There are so many attractions which require detours and spending a longer duration in specific locations. The stay options are plentiful & the hospitality amazing.. However we leave that for you to discover or you could stay tuned for a more detailed region specific post.

The Western ghats have been used as a rough guide to define this set of motorcycle touring in India circuits, and first hand knowledge has allowed (sort) of a logical itinerary to develop. Convenient start/end points have been taken into consideration.

A theme comes into play in the case of the Plantation Circuit (route #4). But essentially the true inspiration comes from the desire to  travel through this ancient mountain range and an equally gorgeous coastline.

The Western Ghats route #1:  Forests, Spirituality and Lesser Known Roads..

Baroda – shoolpaneshwar wildlife sanctuary, shoolpaneshwar – dindori, dindori – trimbak, trimbak – bhimashankar, bhimashankar – lonavala – mumbai, mumbai – vadodara.

This road trip begins in the artistic town of Vadodara, which in itself has several attractions, but the showstopper on this ride is the Western ghats and that’s where we retain our focus.

While Shoolpaneshwar is not technically a part of the Western ghats, the forests and undulating topography of the  Narmada basin allow for a great start and an opportunity to visit the Unity statue in the vicinity. A short ride away from Shoolpaneshwar we begin our tryst with the Western ghats, at the town of Songadh.

We traverse through stunning roads cutting across forest and agricultural land, along a gently undulating landscape, encountering jagged rocks, black soil, and  plateaus covered in short grass that are characteristic of the Western ghats.

Finish the (day’s) ride in the sylvan environs of Dindori – the start of the grape & wine heartland of India. Some great mountain roads lead you to Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga. Continue this spiritual passage, travelling to another Jyotirlinga at Bhimashankar. While these destinations have a clear religious significance, its worth a mention that the scenery you are passing through is nothing short of a spiritual experience in itself. Often a classic aspect of motorcycle touring in India.

dindori region vineyard

Based on the time of the year, you would be accompanied by numerous waterfalls, lush forests of green, high vantage points and surreal sunrises/sunsets. Our final day along the ghats, takes us to the popular hill station of Lonavala, albeit on lesser roads that are a motorists delight. A straightforward return to Mumbai and finally along the highway back to Vadodara.

The Western Ghats route #2: The Konkan Kaleidoscope Road Trip ..

Mumbai – kashid, kashid – harnai, harnai – ganpatipule, ganpatipule – sawantwadi, sawantwadi – goa, goa – satara, satara – mumbai.

This region is so picturesque and the nostalgia of this road trip so strong, that many movies and songs have paid tribute to its ‘epicness’. We are travelling between Mumbai and Goa, a region surrounded by stories, history, diverse landscapes, culinary delights, architectural marvels – it’s difficult to encompass it all into one single road-trip.

We encourage you to take this journey, focusing on slow and immersive travel, focusing on an event flow that enhances true engagement. Focus on the interior coast of Maharashtra, crafting a journey that has you travelling on: interior roads (slicing through the Sahyadris), skirting the Arabian sea (along pristine beaches), waiting for ferries to crossover lands-end, dabbling in local cuisine (amidst untouched villages), and through orchards of Alphonso mango interspersed with the green of Paddy fields.

This may be one of the BEST regions in India for a road-trip.

Start with the iconic gateway of India and get on the Ferry to Mandwa. A short road trip along the ocean ( on what’s called the coast of ruins) will take you to Kashid, and the nearby attractions of Murud & Janjira. We continue with ferry crossings and pristine beaches showcasing the west coast of India at its finest. Stop for a picnic lunch at one of the many spots you will cross.

western ghats trip plan

Through spontaneous ocean dips, and stop-overs to sample the highway cuisine of the region; arrive at one of the most pristine beaches on the coast, where the combination of cliffs meeting the ocean set the stage for a perfect evening. We continue alternating between the hills and the ocean till we reach the sun-kissed shores of Goa.

The return journey takes you to the Kaas Plateau near Kolhapur – Deccan’s own, Valley of flowers. We eventually hit the Nh7 making a speed return to maximum city Mumbai.

The Western Ghats route #3: Of Hippies & Hills ..

North goa – south goa, south goa – jog falls, jog falls – chickmangaluru, chickmangaluru – malpe, malpe – gokarna, gokarna – goa.

Churches, Bridges, Islands & Ferries– an inland Goa that is less touristy  than the beaches, yet offer a diversity of culture and landscape.

Perfect for a moto adventure, the roads are in great condition and trace across the countryside in  a dark pattern of electric-cable like interconnections. Explore the larger river islands of Divar & Chorao and further cross over to Old Goa’s historic quarter.

Crossover into the state of Karnataka  and  you are now in proper hill country with its associated twisties. Long sweeping bends &  sharp flicking switch-backs greet you, as you course through low mountains, blanketed in forest cover.

Enter the historic heartland of coffee! Chikmangaluru is where the first (smuggled) seeds of coffee were planted in India, by the sage Baba Budan. A forest within a forest would be an apt description of this region. The specificity of coffee plantations needing the shade of tall trees, ensures that the ecosystem is not a sterile mono-culture of coffee bushes

A short road trip to the 5th century living  architecture site – the temples of Belur, will transport you to a time of impeccable craftsmanship; when art was patronized by the rulers of this region.

One of the iconic sites of South Indian temple architecture, this diversion in our road-trip is a reminder of the historic  footprint of the land you are travelling through.  Our journey continues with another gorgeous stretch of tarmac that traverses the Western Ghats before we descend towards the coast. A short break by the lighthouse of Kaup  brings you to Malpe.

belur temple western ghats india

We are in back-water country now. Which in parts, is fertile cultivated fields, and in parts islands of mangrove forest. All of this is interconnected through a series of brides that provide  a fitting view point of this dramatic landscape.

Hippie vibes await you at Om beach & Kudle, a reminder that Goa  is just a couple of hours away.

The Western Ghats route #4: The Plantation circuit ..

Kochi – munnar, munnar – kodaikanal, kodaikanal – ooty, ooty – madikeri, madikeri – calicut, calicut – kochi.

The Western ghats are a geographic phenomenon almost as old as earth. Forming a natural wall along the Western coast of India, millennia old forests, fed by the monsoon rains, cover this region. Home to such a high concentration of flora and fauna that its considered among the top 10 biodiversity hotspots in the world.

To deal with the South Indian summer and to exploit this abundant natural resource, a systematic network of roads was created, taming forests and bringing huge swathes of forest under cultivation for cash crops like tea, coffee, pepper and rubber.  This road-trip is a homage to a generation of pioneers, who have left an undeniable print across the landscape of India.

The rewards of motorcycle touring in India, especially South India, are in the slow winding curves on fast paced roads, lush forests (with high chances of spotting wildlife), and chasing psychedelic hued sunsets on beaches you never heard of..

Starting with the historic town of Kochi, you proceed onward to the tea capital of South India. Munnar is an endless views of rolling green hills  in various hues, picture postcard moments of tea pickers , lush meadows with cows, and patches of impenetrable Shola  rain forests .

motorcycle touring in india western ghats

Travel further to Kodaikanal and Ooty, both famous for their boarding schools and uncommonly high concentration of home-made chocolate shops. You crossover from Tamil Nadu into Karnataka, and from tea country into the heartland of coffee cultivation in India – Coorg.

You finally leave the Western ghats and descend to the coast, at the historic town of Calicut –  equally legendary for its cuisine ( Mussels & Biryani). A last stretch on a coastal highway brings you back to Kochi.

The Western Ghats route #5: The End ..

Kochi – kumily (via vagamon), kumily – courtallam, courtallam – kanyakumari, kanyakumari – varkala, varkala – alleppey, alleppey – kochi.

Owing to its connectivity, this trip also starts in Kochi- but you proceed into the hills towards Vagamon and onward to the lesser known hill- station at Kumily. Its vicinity to the Periyar national park makes it a stunning urban centre amidst dense rainforests. Several stay options allow it to be a convenient base to explore the National Park.

Lesser roads take you through the core of the rainforest, your eyes constantly alert , hoping for some wildlife sighting. We arrive at Courtallam famous for its waterfalls and therapeutic massages (not for the faint hearted).

Travel along low hill country with a higher density of cultivation, before making the final descent to lands end at Kanyakumari. Significant for so many reasons, take a dip at the Triveni Sangam and admire the statue of Swami Vivekananda, this historic town finds references from times of antiquity.

backwaters boat trip kerala india

A fast paced, high traffic ride along the expressway(NH 66) takes you to the cliffs of Varkala, and its idyllic beach. A haven for hippies, this town has transformed under the aegis of Kerala tourism, and several experiential properties & cafes line the narrow cliff face. Sip on a beverage as you watch the sun set over the Arabian sea, and if you are lucky, spot dolphins on the horizon.

A short trip on the inner coast takes you along a landscape sandwiched between the ocean and backwater lagoons. Low traffic and picturesque villages are scattered across this emerald landscape, dappled with shining pools of crystal blue. We reach the town of Alleppey and settle into our hotel room, preparing for the evening.

As cliched as it may be, a sunset cruise in  a house boat on lake Vembanad  is a must do. Surreal colors, stunning birdlife, local food, local beverages, and a human eco-system that survives in the back channels of this massive water body make this area beautiful to experience. Its everyday life conducted nonchalantly along a watery world (that they glide through on tiny boats & dinghies). A sort ride to Kochi means that you can depart from Alleppey as late as you want.

Whatever motorcycle touring route you choose, always remember to keep these points in mind.

We would love to hear what you think about these routes in the comments below, and have a look at our curated options for motorcycle touring in India or just message us for any motorcycle travel questions you have. Happy to share our knowledge and expertise.

Best Time To Plan Kerala To Goa Road Trip

Between the months of October and February, the vibrant blue skies of Kerala to Goa road trip is something to behold

Between October and February are the best time to set out on your Kerala to Goa road trip. The weather is clear and pleasant, the skies are vibrant blue, and the air is crisp and fresh for you to breathe in. Usually, most of the experienced road-tripping experts avoid travelling from Kerala to Goa during the summer months, which is between March to May. Usually, the weather is hot and humid due to the coastline, and it’s uncomfortable spending your days under the bright sun trying to soak in the views of the common tourist attractions.

June to September accounts for the monsoon season in this stretch, so you are bound to experience heavy rainfall and potential road closures. This explains why road trips during these months usually take a back seat. But, what about the crowds? What if you don’t want to go on this road trip from Goa to Kerala during the peak season when the crowd is extensive? Usually, this is where you need to consider visiting during the shoulder season, between October and November. The weather is great, and crowds are manageable, too.

Route For Kerala To Goa Road Trip

When planning a road trip, wondering how to reach Kerala to Goa by road, is possibly the first question that pops up in people’s minds. Before we discuss the best routes, let us highlight the Kerala to Goa distance. Travelling via NH66 is the most common route for your Kerala to Goa road trip. The distance you cover in this route is roughly 761 km. Here’s a breakdown of the different routes so you can choose the one better suited to your needs:

Coastal Route via NH66

Calangute, one of the most beautiful churches in Goa, which you can reach after your Kerala to Goa road trip

This 761-kilometre route, following the Arabian Sea coastline, offers breathtaking ocean views and a relaxed pace. Cruise along palm-fringed beaches and quaint fishing villages. Stop over at historical towns like Calicut, known for its spice trade legacy, and Kannur, showcasing remnants of its colonial past. Indulge in fresh seafood delicacies and soak up the coastal charm. However, be prepared for busier stretches, particularly around major towns, and potentially narrower roads compared to the inland route.

Western Ghats Route via NH 212 & NH 75

On your Kerala to Goa road trip, you may even come across the beautiful Thekkady, a haven for hikers and animal lovers.

Image Source: Pratheesh mishra for wikimedia commons

As we previously discussed, the NH66 route is the one that most road trippers opt for when travelling from Kerala to Goa by road. However, if you want to explore a different and more scenic route, this is it. This route ventures inland through the majestic Western Ghats, showcasing lush greenery, waterfalls, and coffee plantations. Be prepared for hillier terrain and potentially twistier roads. The distance is slightly shorter than the coastal route. Out of the two routes, if you want more familiarity, convenience, and easy accessibility to different amenities and rest stops, we’d suggest sticking to the NH66 route.
