Jewels of Japan - what a waste of money

Jewels of Japan - March 2024. Worst tour we've ever been on. Chaotic tour from start to finish. Coach left twice without all the passengers and had to go back to pick up. Really poorly organised. Our 'guide' had no idea how to be a guide and was totally oblivious to the expectations of people who were on the tour. The guide didn't know the basics such as how to get tickets for attractions so there was lots of waiting around and constant changing of plans and timing causing lots of confusion. Most frustratingly for us, we learned nothing - guide gave no information about the places we visited, history, the food we were eating etc. We were certainly not immersed in the culture and history as promised in the brochure. The audio equipment which was issued with the expectation that there would be information about the places visited was for decoration only. They were used once during the whole tour. The only way we learned anything was to listen in to other tours. We were pretty much dropped off at a location and left to make our own way round and learn what we could for ourselves. This was certainly not the premium tour advertised and represented very poor value for money. We would never go on another tour with Wendy Wu.

Travelled with Wendy Wu on a Discover…

Travelled with Wendy Wu on a Discover Japan trip. Unfortunately this turned out to be a disappointing trip for a number reasons: Large group of 28 meant that restaurants used had to accommodate this number. The result was poor food with little variety. Bullitt train experience turned out to be a very short suburban trip with no option to reach the speeds advertised. Poor guide with few social skills and inadequate English. We came home knowing very little about Japan’s culture, history and customs. Questions were not encouraged and there was no help to enable us to make the most of free time. This was especially true in Kyoto where we saw very little of the local architecture etc. People with food intolerances whilst caters for adequately were forced to sit away from their travelling companions. On the plus side, our fellow travellers were all lovely entertaining people and we saw many interesting sights. The blossom was beautiful. This was an expensive trip and the holiday was certainly not the luxury experience we had been expecting. We would not use Wendy Wu again.

Expected better for the price

When booking this very expensive holiday for our Golden Wedding celebration I thought it would be the trip of a lifetime. So wrong. The group was too big and with different fitness levels, a few of our group really struggled to keep up with the fast pace of the tour guide who had to choice but to leave several people to struggle. We did the Japan Uncovered tour and though we enjoyed some of the sites, the Japanese food was awful and very poor throughout. We had a bad storm when we were due to sail on Lake Ashi and the cable car and our actual compensation (they didn’t have an alternative trip organised in case of any problems) was 2 free drinks each at our evening meal. Our tour guide was lovely but completely overwhelmed with trying to fit everything in and keep some of the moaners happy. It just didn’t work and I now wish we had chosen a different destination for the main part of our celebration or stayed at home and spent the money more wisely. The hotels were nice but our lasting memory will be of the amazing toilets which is really sad. A huge disappointment. Read the reviews before booking your trip of a lifetime

I extremely disappointed with Wendy Wu

As with many reviewers I have travelled with Wendy Wu on 3 previous occasions and have loved the tours. In January I attended the holiday show in Manchester and spoke to the staff there. I wanted an add on to the holiday and was assured this could happen and paid a deposit. Hanna got back to me a couple of times and my holiday was sorted including everything I wanted. I also paid for an additional flight. I was reminded to pay and paid the remaining amount on 15th April, received a confirmation on 16th and then my holiday was cancelled on 18th! This holiday cost over £20 000 . I was then informed that their systems couldn’t pay me back immediately as it was ‘too much’. I had to ring the company and I have received the full amount back. This was my ‘holiday of a lifetime’ . I have received no further contact or apology. I am extremely disappointed that a company I trusted should behave in such a way.

Greetings have just arrived back in New…

Greetings have just arrived back in New Zealand from my 4th Wendy tour. This time did Vietnam mekong river cruise and Cambodia. 22 days the tour was and again I will always recommend this brilliant company to others. In Cambodia our guide solky was incredibly well presented, knowledgeable and caring for the other 23 tour group he called us his family. This man is a credit to a very well run company a strong representative of his area and a lovely person. Our team wish him well and I hope even though all my guides have been great he gets many more tours. Cheers Christine mills

DO NOT TRAVEL TO JAPAN WITH WENDY WU

Having travelled extensively and globally with 3 other tour companies I am extremely disappointed to record that in comparison, Wendy Wu failed on many fronts to live up to their own marketing blurb. Upon arrival at the first destination hotel (in financial district) we were informed that check in was 3 pm. It was 12 noon and after 22 hours of travelling plus 9 hours time difference we were exhausted. No representative on site. We finally obtained room after negotiating an early check in fee. The standard of food was appalling throughout the trip. Food was repeatedly on the table upon arrival at the venues and clearly had been there for some time. Generally it consisted of warm rice, warm or cold miso soup, bland assorted pickles and tofu. In short the standard was far from what one would expect for £7000. Upon arrival at one hotel at 5.00 we were told dinner was 5.30. I have not had dinner at that time since I was 6 years old. Long coach trips, with no water provided, no free time for relaxing or shopping and a large group of 28. Tour guides English was poor and I could continue. Enough to say it was the worst holiday I have ever had, could not wait to get home and what a rip off. was so looking forward to Japan, what a shame. Wish I had read the reviews before I went. We have contacted Wendy Wu who offered £200 off next trip, as if I would ever travel with them again.

Will probably look at another company next time

We did the Japan Uncovered tour with the intention of seeing Japan, cherry blossom and experiencing the japanese culture. In this respect, we were not disappointed. The hotels were excellent, the food was delicious but strange, the places we visited ranged from interesting to awesome. Transport was a little lacking: for over 8 grand per person, I expected better than what seemed a run-of-the-mill coach with no toilet facilities or USB charging points. But perhaps coaches like that don't exist in japan. The guides were a mixed bunch; we had three over the two weeks. The first one's language and communications skills were diabolical: I think the word fluent has a different definition in japan. It required intense concentration to take in what she was saying and most people in our group gave up after a few minutes which meant that a lot of information was missed. Having said that, she got us where we needed to be at the right time and never lost anyone. The following two guides were much better. The Wendy Wu brochure seems deliberately vague about fitness levels required. Our holiday required people to be of fitness level 1 but this isn't accurately defined anywhere. Some days we were walking up to 7 miles and climbing over 200 very uneven stairs and several people were simply unable to manage this and were very unhappy about being misled. As ever, we had some people in our group who like to moan about everything: "I don't like fish." "The food is cold" "Why do we get rice with everything?" People need to be realistic about what experiencing japanese culture actually means. Overall, it was a good and enjoyable holiday and we got to see everything we expected but it was very, very expensive and next time we will probably try another company

2 weeks in Thailand ... went without a hitch

Wonderful experience from start to finish with Wendy Wu. They took our requests for a 2 week bespoke trip to Thailand in November 2023. They pulled together an itinerary that met everything we wanted, for a good price. They kept us updated and delivered a pack a few weeks before travel with everything we needed, and were on hand to answer any additional questions over email. The trip went without a hitch - every transfer was on time, all trips were well planned and guides were fantastic (especially Olivia in Bangkok). Hotels were great, clean and convenient. We had an incredible trip and we'll definitely be using Wendy Wu in the future.

I did the highlights of Sri Lanka with…Wendy wu

I did the highlights of Sri Lanka with Wendy Wu a beautiful country but this trip was just too packed.We had an amazing guide and driver but there was just too much one day we caught the train to the tea plantation arrived in the dark and left early in the morning in the dark again, 5 hours each way to see nothing. The food was really poor all meals for all 16 days were lukewarm buffets apart from a packed lunch on the train. The country is fantastic but pick a tour with better food and slower paced.

If you had a zero star I would have…

If you had a zero star I would have picked it. What can I say? This was my first Wendy Wu experience. I will NEVER use them again. I have travelled to many countries using small group travel as my default. All have been positive experiences until now. Japan, a country I had been looking forward to experiencing was sadly compromised as a result. Small group as promised? No-28 people making it unwieldy with a consequent inability to go to smaller restaurants etc. I had specifically asked for a small group tour-below 15 was the expectation. I was sold an expensive dud. Guide? Below abysmal. Didn’t know her stuff. Spoke appalling English. Nothing about the culture, the people, no real detail about wherever we were visiting. Was told not to ask questions!!! Really???? She had to look everything up on her mobile on the bus trip. Told in no uncertain terms where to sit in the often awful places we eat at because of my almond allergy. Could not sit next to some of the lovely and equally dissatisfied people we met. On one of the sections of the tour when we were on a short river cruise, she abandoned two members when she couldn’t find them! We already had a guide on the boat, now we had an extra one who knew nothing and took photos for herself! They had no one. The tour was expensive, underwhelming and in no way lived up to expectations.

Experience Japan Tour

When spending over £6000 each you can only hope that your tour company is as good as their reputation. Wendy Wu certainly was! We were fortunate to have a group of 28 wonderful companions and the most fabulous Tour Guide in ‘Jimmy’ who ensured everything went as smoothly as possible. Every aspect of the trip was covered to the last detail so no need to worry about anything. The hotels ranged from basic to amazing but all were clean and comfortable. Our favourite being the Fujisan Mishima Tokyu Hotel which provided one of my personal highlights of the tour - the rooftop onsen watching the sunrise over Mount Fuji. The Experience Japan Tour takes in an awful lot with little free time but we loved it. The Snow Monkey Park was incredible. If I were to be very picky my only criticism is the time in Tokyo as I would have liked to have seen more of the actual city. Retrospectively we would have opted out of the visit to the National Museum and the Skytree and done our own thing, or alternatively extended our stay. We were exceptionally lucky with the weather although cherry season was late this year so the blossoms were not in full bloom. The food throughout the tour was very good albeit the breakfasts varied somewhat. So to sum up … this is a fabulous tour and Wendy Wu is highly recommended. You may even be lucky enough to have ‘Jimmy’ as your guide.

Wendy Wu Cambodia tour Nov 2023

Just back from Wendy Wu group tour to Cambodia (Classic). Wow! An amazing experience. Can't recommend it highly enough. A country we knew little about before going was really brought to life by our brilliant local guide, Mr Sokhoeun Bout. He is kind, gentle, an excellent communicator, has such knowledge about and passion for his country, made us all laugh a lot, and nothing was too much trouble. The itinerary was very varied and included fascinating insights into local NGO's and family small businesses, as well as Siem Reap, Angkor, Battambang, Phnom Penh, Kampot and Kep. Hotels all beautiful. Food excellent. Very careful driver. A wonderful trip of a lifetime.

Best of Borneo tour

Just returned from the Best of Borneo trip, which was fantastic from start to finish. Guide was waiting for us at the airport as promised, all transport and internal flights were well organised. Good food throughout with special care given to guests with specific dietary requirements. The itinerary covered cities, temples and of course the wildlife. The three days spent in the jungle were incredible. A special mention for our guide Selvam, if you get him as your guide you’ve hit the jackpot. So knowledgeable, so kind, and has a genuine desire to make sure every guest has the perfect holiday.

Great experience on Uncovered Japan…

Great experience on Uncovered Japan tour. Guide was with us from the beginning and spoke excellent english, was knowledgeable and kind. accommodation was clean and comfortable. The tour is definitely busy with lot of sightseeing but that's what we love about wendy wu is there's nothing to be missed. Food was nice just when we thought we'd had enough Japanese food, we would get a nice western meal. have travelled twice with wendy wu before and will be doing again.

Jewels of Japan' tour rip off

Went on Wendy Wu 'Jewels of Japan' tour 27th Mar to 6th April 2023, very disappointing! Bad airport pick up, sub standard hotels, awful food which was often cold. Barely any downtime, felt rushed, no time to relax at all! Arrangement for transfer to airport at end of trip was diabolical! So stressful! The tour wasn't the magical experience I was expecting for my 'once in a lifetime' 70th birthday. Total rip off! The tour failed to deliver on any level. Naturally after such a disappointing trip I complained when I got back, but Wendy Wu treated my complaint with contempt! Offered me £100 voucher off next holiday, basically fobbed me off, as if I would ever choose to travel with them again!

Jewels of Japan

At a cost of 8k I expected a better standard of service overall but was truly disappointed. Their sales team is effective but once the tour is paid for the after care drops drastically. The guide did not speak good English ! Some of the hotels were very basic . The pace of tour was not level 1 - it was a very busy schedule with a lot of walking and hardly any down time. Long coach trips on coaches of very basic standards . Japan is a beautiful country but I would have enjoyed it better and in comfort with a company who provided a higher standard of service .

Japan Uncovered

Good itinerary and friendly guide, but several areas of disappointment. Poor value at £7k+ pp for 14 nights. Physical Rating 1 is ludicrous for a tour when most days there is 5+ miles walking, often on inclines, and in hot humid conditions. Pace of tour is wrong with too few breaks, rarely is there a mid morning/afternoon stop for tea/coffee etc. Hotels were mainly in business districts, often at or near railway stations. Rooms almost all small and at the budget end of the hotels' range often, with views of other buildings. Only a few had a bar and none had lounges or areas to relax in, other than, at times. the reception area. Nice to try Japanese food, but most of the lunches and dinners were very similar (and somewhat bland) and often served just about warm. Meals were usually waiting on the tables before our arrival. Food provided was generally of a budget type with only a handful of more premium meals.

Vietnam and Cambodia

We had the time of our lives! A great crowd to be with and a great guide. A very full on experience and living out of a suitcase a new experience, it was like posh backpacking. The people were wonderful and friendly. We had one bad experience at the 5 star diamond stars Hotel in Ben Tre where the staff were hopelessly untrained and I believe easily manipulated by the management to cheat the customers on their alcohol bills. I would advise Wendy wu to drop them from the itinerary. That aside the rest of the experience was memorable and well worth the money.

Two happy people

Hi, We recently finished a bus tour of Vietnam. We had a great experience travelling around this beautiful exotic country. Starting with the most experience tour guide, Mr Lap. He made our tour very enjoyable with a great sense of humor, passionate about what he does, he took very good care of the group, got out of his way to help, very informative, great knowledge of his country's history, up to date with world news, Lap gave us so much information and from the beginning made us feel very comfortable. We traveled with a very nice group of people. The food was not always good but in general the restaurants were very good. One can not please everybody as we all come from different backgrounds. Accommodation was very good, nice hotels, cleaned and people were very nice and welcoming. We could do another tour with Wendy Wu.

Treasures of Turkey 3* tour at 5* price

First time booking with Wendy Wu and will be the last. The tour sounded good as it covered a lot of sites. As it turned out too many. Due to the distances between sites the majority of the time (up to 7 hours a day) was spent on the bus with minimal time , sometimes only 10 minutes at the sites. Perhaps we should have researched this better ourselves but I think Wendy Wu should have been honest in the itinerary and explained this. Hotels were poor quality and we felt we had paid 5* prices for 3* hotels. Airport pick up was a shambles. Maximum number on the tour was stated as 28 yet there were 30 people on the tour which impacted on time spent in places and made the guides job very difficult in crowded places. We wasted a lot of time waiting for members of the group to catch up. I was going to give this trip a 3* but having provided detailed feedback to Wendy Wu customer services I had a very disappointing response and I don't believe they have taken any criticism on board hence 2*

Wendy Wu adds Japan capacity following Race Across the World demand

Wendy Wu Tours has added 17 autumn departures to Japan to meet demand created by the latest Asia-based series of BBC’s Race Across the World.

The specialist operator claimed a 52% rise in bookings for the country, where teams set off on their travels to Lombok.

A £1,000 discount is being offered until July 1 on most popular escorted tours to Japan, China, Southeast Asia, India and Sri Lanka, as well as selected trips in South America, Central Asia, Africa, Europe and the Middle East.

South Korea, highlighted in the series, has also seen a rise in popularity, with an ‘Essence of South Korea & Japan’ tour now ranking among the operator’s best sellers.  

Wendy Wu Tours has also reported an increase in last-minute bookings for the 2025 Japanese Cherry Blossom season, which is quickly reaching capacity.

Head of trade sales Gary King said: “The excitement generated by Race Across the World has truly been unprecedented.  

“We’ve seen a dramatic surge in bookings, particularly for our Japan tours, with a 52% increase over the past eight weeks.  

“In response to this incredible demand, we’ve added 17 new departures for the autumn season in Japan, including our flagship tours such as ‘Japan Uncovered’ and ‘Best of Japan’.  

“It’s clear that viewers are looking for the security and enriching experiences that our fully inclusive tours provide.”

He added: “Our new ‘Wanderlust Sale’ is our way of rewarding our customers and making these dream destinations even more accessible.

“These offers provide exceptional value, allowing travellers to explore the must-see sights and hidden gems of Asia with the assurance of our award-winning guides.
