I recently rented a car from First rent a car Overall, I had a positive experience. The process of picking up the car was quick and easy, and the staff were friendly and helpful. The car itself was clean and in good condition, and I had no issues with it during my rental period. The rates were also very reasonable compared to other rental car companies I have used in the past. I would definitely recommend First rent a car to anyone in need of a rental car. + is the only one company who offered free overnight parking,I was able to use my own insurance but why I’m going to use mine own if they have full coverage , it was amazing experience .

Very nice to rent a car in central Waikiki. Nice mid size suv perfect for our trip to Dole, North Shore, Crumble cookie and Ulta. Smooth tide all the way. When returning the car in the evening, Aja at the service desk was really friendly and helpful.

Extremely impressed with Voyage car rental. Fantastic customer service, stress free, awesome services provided with no hassle. We want to thank Michelle and Lauren for being so accommodating to us. They provided amazing and friendly customer service, Michelle showed us a map of the island and go to spots-we are forever grateful for being able to see the turtle! Lauren arranged a vehicle for us and making the transaction seamless when we decided last minute we wanted to rent the car a day early. Aja made returning the car a breeze. Hawaii is truly magical but the people made the biggest impact. We never experienced such a stress free car rental process like we did with Voyage. Thank you so much.

Needed a last minute day rental. Saw this place nearby, since our hotel car rental was super expensive and very limited on vehicles we decided to try them out. We reserved online before picking up to be safe but also it was a little cheaper... when I say a little i mean ($20-30 less). The rental process was quick and easy. They are located inside the Waikiki shoping plaza, first floor. A little kiosk. Customer service for pick up and drop off was super helpful and nice. The car wasnt in the best condition compared to other rental places, but worked perfect for what we needed. Id highly recommend this place, especially for a last minute rental.

Quick service when renting the car! They were really nice and gave us a little discount for the rental. They let us rent the night before, last minute needed a car. Super helpful at both desks Aja was super sweet and helpful when we dropped off our car! Definitely recommend this rental company!

Good customer service. Was issued a car without spare tire and they quickly provided me with a replacement car that had a spare tire. Manager came out to make sure I was good with everything. Also, Aja, who handled my overnight drop off and my car return was very warm, friendly, and professional. She got me taken care of quickly and on my way home both times. When I returned the car, I appreciate that she asked me about the car and whether there were any issues and she also was friendly and asked me about what we did during our trip. Both she and the manager, in particular, really made this a wonderful renting experience!

This is the most hassle-free car rental in Waikiki. Everyone was incredibly nice and helpful. They got us checked-in and into a car in under 10 minutes. 10/10 recommend to anyone needing a vehicle for the day.

Peru man charged in Plattsburgh rental car homicide investigation

PERU — Police say the husband of a Peru woman, who was found dead in the trunk of a car Tuesday, has been arrested and charged in connection with her death.

Scott A. Tyrell, 58, of Peru was arraigned in Peru Town Court Friday afternoon and charged with second-degree murder and concealment of a human corpse after Lisa A. Dashnaw (Tyrell), 57, was found dead in the trunk of a vehicle at a local car rental business Tuesday.

State Police said Friday that on Tuesday, May 28, they responded to Enterprise Rent a Car at the intersection of State Route 3 and Military Turnpike in the Town of Plattsburgh. A Trooper, who was on scene for an uninvolved complaint, was advised by Enterprise employees of an overdue rental car that was reclaimed under suspicious circumstances, police said.

The rental vehicle was located by Enterprise at a private residence on Dogwood Avenue in the City of Plattsburgh, and towed back to Enterprise in Plattsburgh. The tow truck operator asked the Trooper to be present when they went through the vehicle, police said.

When Enterprise employees checked the vehicle, Dashnaw was located deceased in the trunk of the vehicle.

The preliminary investigation revealed Tyrell was the last known operator of the vehicle, police said.

Tyrell was stopped by police early Friday morning in the city and was taken into custody.

Clinton County District Attorney Andrew Wylie said that there was an incident with Tyrell as he was being taken into custody and he sustained a self-inflicted wound that required medical attention.

After Tyrell was released from the hospital, he was taken to the Plattsburgh State Police barracks and was interviewed by members of the State Police and he made admissions to “criminal conduct,” Wylie said.

He was then charged and taken to arraignment.

Court documents estimate Dashnaw’s death occurred on or about April 12, 2024.

According to an autopsy done Wednesday in Glens Falls by Dr. Michael Sikirica, the cause of Dashnaw’s death was strangulation and she was the victim of a homicide.

Tyrell, represented by Clinton County Public Defender Jamie Martineau for the arraignment, entered a plea of not guilty in court Friday.

Justice James Kirby presided over the case.

Tyrell, who was donning a large bandage around his neck during his court appearance, was then remanded to Clinton County Jail without bail. He is tentatively due back in court June 11.

The case is being investigated by New York State Police, Plattsburgh City Police, Clinton County Sheriff’s Department and the Clinton County District Attorney’s Office.

Renting a car in Hawaii: 13 tips you NEED to know

This post contains affiliate links, for which I may earn a commission if you make a qualifying purchase.

voyage rent a car

Sharing is caring!

You’ve decided you’re going to Hawaii , you’ve booked your plane tickets and you’ve even started planning your itinerary. Naturally one of your first questions will be how to get around in Hawaii.  Am I crazy for renting a car in Hawaii? Or would I be crazy to rely on buses and Uber in Hawaii to get around? How expensive is it to rent a car in Hawaii?

These are all great questions, and we’ll try to step you through the process with these important Hawaii car rental tips. From choosing how to get around Hawaii, to reserving a rental car in Hawaii (and hopefully saving some money on it) to navigating some of the unique logistics  we’ve got you covered  for your car rental in Hawaii.  Spoiler alert: I’ve rented a car on my last three trips to Hawaii and I’ll do it again next time.

Already decided you want to rent a car? Book it below and then keep reading for more renting a car in Hawaii tips.

Renting a car in Hawaii is the best way to explore

Hawaii car rentals can get pricey, is it cheaper to rent a car or uber in hawaii, gas in hawaii is expensive, what kind of car should you rent in hawaii it depends, is it worth renting a convertible in hawaii, car seats are required in hawaii, renting a car on the big island be careful of one-way drop fees, parking in hawaii can be totally free or really expensive depending on your trip, driving to the summit of mauna kea read your contract first, car break-ins in hawaii are common, don’t get your car key wet, bonus tip for renting a car in hawaii in 2022, hawaii car rental faqs, plan your trip to hawaii.

voyage rent a car

Let’s start with the basic question: should you rent a car in Hawaii? After spending plenty of time in the Aloha State on different islands, I come down firmly on the side of “yes, you should rent a car in Hawaii for at least part of your visit”.

Hawaii has so much to offer beyond its cities and its packaged tourist-only resort areas. There’s stunning scenery, there are amazing hole-in-the-wall restaurants and, most importantly, there are real people who live on the islands who you’ll never meet and talk to if you spend your whole vacation at a resort. Having a rental car in Hawaii and a sense of adventure allows you to get to know it in a deeper and more meaningful way.

From a practical perspective, you also benefit from the added flexibility. If you want to try different activities or guided tours, not hiring a car in Hawaii leaves you tied to the schedule (and price tag) of the optional transportation services that many activity companies offer. That can be fine sometimes, but if you’re a big group the prices can add up. You might also find that you go to the far side of an island for an activity like the wonderful Polynesian Cultural Center and then want to explore the surrounding area… which you can’t do if you have to take their van back to your hotel.

Having a rental car also allows you to stay in a legal vacation rental in a quieter area rather than in a crowded hotel zone. To understand what a difference that can make to the type of trip you have, check out the pros and cons of different places to stay on Oahu .

On one of my trips to Big Island I stayed at a fancy resort in an isolated area and it was truly lovely. But by the end of the second day I was tired of the limited on-site food options (and their high cost) and longed to check out some other nearby sites. On the flip side, some of my fondest memories from our time on Oahu were scenic drives up the magical Windward Coast with Hawaiian music playing in the background and rarely another soul in sight.

Like so many things in Hawaii, car rentals aren’t cheap. Exactly how much your Hawaii rental car will cost depends on where you rent it, when you rent it and how long you keep it. Renting for a 7 day period usually winds up cheaper per day than a little shorter or a little longer, so if you only need a rental car for part of your trip you can take that into consideration.

As a point of reference, our Oahu minivan rental worked out to $46 per day, while our Big Island sedan rental was $35 per day. Those are very competitive for Hawaii car rental rates – you won’t find $12 per day like at some busy mainland airports, especially since you’ll probably want some extra trunk space during your visit (more on that below). Click here for more tips on visiting Hawaii on a budget .

One of my favorite tricks for saving money on rental cars is to arrange the cheapest rental I can as soon as I book my flights. That guarantees me a car, but I choose the option to pay at the counter. About once per month (or more often if the trip is sooner), I check back to see if prices have declined for my trip. I usually manage to shave at least $50 off by rebooking later and cancelling the original reservation!

In our experience the best place to rent a car in Hawaii has been through RentalCars.com . You can quickly search for the type of car you want across  tons  of providers of all sizes and reserve  without any upfront payment . Nearly every reservation can be cancelled, so we often check back weekly leading up to our travels and rebook if we see a better rate.

Kayak  car rentals offer a wide range of providers, from the big national brands to smaller options that might be a good alternative during “the great rental car crunch”.  Click here to check pricing for your dates.

A great local option is  Discount Hawaii Car Rental . They work with all of the major Hawaii car rental companies and have Hawaii-based customer service in case an issue comes up. That can be especially helpful if you’re arriving when it’s late in the day on the mainland.

If you aren’t particular about which company you rent from, check out Priceline.com . You’ll get a little bit of mystery in your life but hopefully save money on your Hawaii car rental in the process! They also have the typical options to select exactly which brand and class of car you get. I booked my most recent rental car through Priceline and I’m thrilled with the price!

Another option to consider is joining AARP . The membership costs about as much as a Starbucks run but can save you up to 30% on rental car rates (in addition to discounts on some hotels)! Surprisingly, you don’t have to be a senior or retired to join AARP.

You can also rent cars by the day at some of the major resorts, though you’re a captive audience to whichever company happens to be located on-site and the selection of cars may be more limited. However, it does give you the flexibility to get up in the morning and decide you’re in the mood for adventure! Just be ready to pay for it.

If you’re American, your regular car insurance should at least cover you for liability. We love having a “premium” travel-focused credit card, as it comes with primary rental car coverage . That means that if we rent using that credit card and something happens, the credit card’s insurance kicks in before tapping our regular auto insurance. Our auto policy (which is combined with our home owner’s policy) will never increase because of an incident on vacation. But this is important: you must decline all insurance coverage offered by the Hawaii car rental agency for your credit card’s policy to take effect.

You can also save by bringing your own travel car seat if you’re visiting with kids. Renting a car seat can cost $60 per child for your visit, which is more than some lightweight car seats cost to buy new!

One expense you won’t have to worry about when renting a car in Hawaii? Toll roads. As of this writing, there are no toll roads in Hawaii. Some of the most popular roads on Kauai don’t even have traffic lights!

If you really just want to stay at your resort or in Honolulu it may work out cheaper to take Uber a few times in between beach sessions. That’s especially true if you’re staying in Waikiki, where most accommodations charge for parking, and you can also get around using TheBus and the Waikiki Trolley.

But if you’re looking to explore further and drive to different restaurants every evening, Uber will wind up being fairly expensive. Uber rates have increased everywhere and Hawaii is no exception!

It’s even more important to recognize that there are many areas of Hawaii where you won’t be able to reliably get an Uber “home” even if a driver has dropped you off. That’s particularly true in the more remote areas of each island – you could potentially find yourself stuck for hours with no driver nearby! Uber in Hawaii just isn’t extensive enough to rely on for a trip that extends far from the most developed areas.

It probably goes without saying that gas in Hawaii is expensive. Like most things in the state, it has to be transported in by boat. How expensive it seems to you will really depend on where you live and where you fill your tank – both at home and on vacation.

If you live in the middle of Los Angeles like we used to, prices in Honolulu won’t seem that outrageous. But if you live in the Midwest or an area with low cost of living (or at least a low gas tax), gas prices in Hawaii might be close to double what you’re used to.

The best way to combat the high gas price in Hawaii is to be choosy about where you fill up. You’ll find at least one Costco location on each of the popular islands (four on Oahu , one on each of the other islands) – Lanai and Molokai don’t have Costco and probably never will. Gas prices at Costco in Hawaii are similar to the mainland – that is, substantially cheaper than other options. If you have a Costco Visa card and an Executive membership like we do, you’ll also earn a combined 6% back when you fill your tank at the warehouse. Be prepared that Costco gas stations in Hawaii move on island time, so the lines can be long. Oahu also has two Sam’s Club locations, where gas is priced comparably to Costco.

My advice? If you’re a Costco member, stop to fill up any time you’re passing by and have less than 3/4 of a tank. You’ll save money on gas in Hawaii and avoid running out of gas in a remote area.

In my experience, what kind of car you need for your trip to Hawaii really depends on where you’ll be staying. I know it sounds strange, but hear me out.

If you plan to stay at a beachside hotel or resort where you can walk to the beach, you’ll probably just be driving to dinner and excursions. You need enough space for all of your passengers and their luggage (check out my minimalist Hawaii packing list here to avoid issues) but that’s about it. Choosing Hawaii rental cars on the smaller side will save you money on the rental and on gas.

If you’re like us and prefer to stay in a vacation rental or Home Exchange to have more space and save money on food, you may prefer a bigger car. You’ll potentially be hauling a full set of beach chairs, an umbrella, boogie boards, snorkel gear and sand toys everywhere you go . That’s been our experience at least! On our lengthy trip to Oahu with kids and grandmas in tow we opted for a minivan and it was amazing to have so much trunk space. Even once the grandmas left and we could fold down the back seat, we were still grateful to have the extra space for all our beach gear.

A minivan is probably overkill for most visitors to Hawaii, but if you’re staying in a rental home and transporting beach gear make sure you get a Hawaii rental car with decent trunk space.

You may have visions of cruising around the islands with the top down and the wind in your hair. If that’s your dream, I’m not here to stop you! But there are a few realistic aspects of life with a convertible rental that you’ll want to consider.

First off, I personally found the whole wind-whipped hair thing a novelty for a solid 10 minutes last time we rented a convertible. After that, I was ready to put the top up. If you have short hair or you plan to tie your hair back every time you’re in the car then this won’t be an issue.

Second, you’ll definitely have to consider the weather – on all fronts. If you’re going cruising in a convertible in Hawaii on a beautiful day, it’s imperative that everyone in the car have sunscreen on! Getting sunburned while riding in a convertible is a rookie mistake for sure.

On the other end of things, rain showers in Hawaii can come on unexpectedly while you’re enjoying a gorgeous day, or sometimes they persist based on topography in certain areas that you have to drive through. Either way, be prepared to stop to put the top up if you suspect that rain may be in your immediate future. You can’t put the top up while a convertible is moving!

Third, renting a convertible in Hawaii probably makes you more of a target for a car break in. A fancier car probably means fancier valuables inside! Even if you’re smart and don’t leave anything in the car (more on that later), a busted window (or roof?) will be a real drag on your vacation and could potentially cost you depending on your insurance coverage.

If you’re visiting Hawaii with kids , this section is for you! If not, feel free to skip this one.

It should come as no surprise that car seats are required in Hawaii. Hawaii’s car seat laws are pretty minimal and far less than what is recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the NHTSA. They only require that children be in a harnessed car seat until age 4 (and following manufacturer limits on minimum age to forward face) and in a car seat or booster seat until age 7.

A much safer choice is to keep your child rear-facing until at least 2, but ideally until he reaches the maximum rear-facing limits of his car seat. There are some wonderful lightweight convertible car seats that will make traveling with your young child a breeze!

For children 4 and up, the Ride Safer travel vest is a great ultra-portable car seat alternative to bring to Hawaii. We’ve used ours for years and it’s one of our favorite items of family travel gear. If you prefer a regular car seat (as we often do for trips to Hawaii), these will serve you well .

Kiddos who are at least 5 (but preferably 6+) and able to sit properly at all times can ride in one of these travel booster seats .

Some rental car locations in Honolulu are surprisingly far from the airport and involve (fast) driving on major streets in a car rental shuttle. While shuttles have a size advantage over passenger cars, it’s still advisable to buckle your child’s car seat in if possible and ideally in a row that faces the front of the shuttle. Even if your installation isn’t perfect, it’s preferable to your child being totally unrestrained in a moving vehicle going 40 miles per hour.

The Big Island is big enough that many visitors consider flying in to one side (Hilo) and out of the other (Kona). After all, to make the most of your time there you’ll want to split your stay between the two areas – find out more with our Big Island itinerary .

Just be prepared for a one-way “drop fee” if you rent a car at one airport and return it at the the other. They’re usually in the range of $75-85.

Is it the end of the world to pay a drop fee? Certainly not. We’ve done it many times in other places when it made the most sense for our itinerary.

On the Big Island it will really depend on how much time you have and how the flight costs break out. On our most recent trip to the Big Island we got an amazing award ticket redemption but we could only use it to fly to Kona roundtrip, so we bit the bullet and drove across the Saddle Road and on to Volcano Village as soon as we landed. It was mid-day, so we had plenty of time to do it (and also stop for groceries) before dark, but it was two hours of driving after a five hour flight. If you’re coming from the east coast and your travel involves multiple flights then your calculus might be different.

One a different trip the price for flying into one airport and out of the other wasn’t any higher, so it was worth the time and reduced driving to pay the drop fee. Before you solidify your Big Island itinerary, it’s worth weighing all of these factors and checking the price of a one way rental to decide what’s right for you.

On our five week family trip to Oahu , I don’t think we dropped more than $50 total for parking. We stayed at an amazing house that had free parking, visited public beaches and generally explored all over. Every now and then we paid a few dollars at a meter in Honolulu, for the lot at Hanauma Bay or to park close to the Diamond Head hike .

What we didn’t do on that trip was hang out at fancy hotels. We’ve done that before and it can be wonderful, but if you’re planning on that kind of trip you need to budget around $30 per night for parking (some hotels are a little more, some a little less). That’s especially true if you’re staying in tourist-heavy areas like Waikiki, Ka’anapali or Waikoloa.

If your plan is to stay at a hotel in Waikiki, you may be able to get away with public transportation, the trolley and Uber most of the time and then renting a car for just a day or two as needed to go to the more remote parts of Oahu. You might even be able to snag a hotel with free parking . If you’re visiting Ka’anapali on Maui , you can try to rely on the free resort shuttles or the $1 bus to Lahaina. You might even be able to get away with that in Kona town since it’s close to the airport.

But popular areas like Ka’anapali, Waikoloa and Turtle Bay are so far from their closest airports that taxi and shuttle costs add up quickly. Here are sample rates for SpeediShuttle:

  • Oahu airport to Ko’olina: $23 per person each way
  • Maui airport to Ka’anapali: $35 per person each way
  • Kona airport to Waikoloa: $31 per person each way
  • Kauai airport to Princeville: $43 per person each way

Depending on your plans and how many people are in your party, it might make sense to pay for the airport shuttle transportation and then just rent a car at your resort as needed. That could work well if you’re staying at a place like Aulani where the on-site offerings will keep you busy all day and all night! Just make sure to weigh all of your options carefully before deciding.

If you’re planning to drive your regular old rental car to the summit of Mauna Kea, think again. To go past the Visitor Information Station (VIS), you are required to have a 4WD vehicle as the road is steep and unpaved. Some people do take normal cars up in violation of their rental agreements , but if the car gets stuck or damaged up there the costs can run into the thousands of dollars.

Even a 4WD vehicle rented from a normal rental agency isn’t allowed to go off-roading – this is one of the most important Hawaii Big Island car rental tips you need to know. There’s really one option if you want to drive to the summit of Mauna Kea yourself: Harper .

Harper Car & Truck Rental isn’t cheap and customer experiences vary, but their motto when I encountered them on my first visit (almost 20 years ago) was “The only way to the top”. And that’s because they will rent you a suitable 4WD truck and permit you to drive it to the summit of Mauna Kea. You still have to make sure you don’t mess up the undercarriage by scraping over boulders, but I’ve been to the summit of Mauna Kea in Harper vehicles twice and never had an issue.

Another option if you want to visit the summit of Mauna Kea is to go on this organized tour . While individuals visiting the summit have to come down at least 30 minutes before sunset, this experienced tour operator can bring you up to watch the sunset and then do some of the world’s best stargazing before you head back to the VIS to explore.

Mauna Kea Summit Sunset & Stargazing Adventure with Picnic Dinner [Open Now] tours, activities, fun things to do in Big Island(Hawaii

The good news: Violent crime in Hawaii is substantially lower than on the mainland (35-50% lower by some estimates).

The bad news: Property crime is much higher in Hawaii than on the mainland. Theft of both cars and personal property is high, and tourists are a popular (and easy) target.

While nothing is a guarantee, you can decrease your chances of being a victim of property crime in Hawaii by leaving valuables at your hotel or Airbnb. You definitely don’t want to leave anything visible in your car when you lock it up to head to the beach. Even having a less-fancy rental will probably make you less of a target for those inclined to break into cars.

It can be tough to protect your personal property when you’re at the beach and you want to go in the water. If you’re traveling as a group, it’s always a good choice to take turns so that someone can stay with your stuff – especially at a crowded beach like Waikiki where people are constantly walking through.

We have sometimes left our stuff unattended at quieter beaches like Bellows on Oahu or Punalu’u Beach on Big Island, especially when we’re staying fairly close to shore and can keep our eyes peeled. Bellows is one of my favorite beaches on Oahu because you basically tailgate right there on the sand, backing your car in through the massive ironwood trees that front the sand. One of our best tricks is to hide the critical stuff like the car keys under our sandwiches and snacks in the cooler . We usually put our water-resistant iPhones in this , with these to store our credit cards.

Remember, most property crimes are crimes of opportunity. We haven’t had an issue after many trips to Hawaii ( knock on wood ) and hopefully you won’t either.

This probably goes without saying, but do your very best not to get your rental car key wet. Gone are the days of a simple metal key you can slip in your pocket or put on a lanyard around your neck when you’re in the water. As you probably realize, today’s car keys are much more sophisticated and electronic.

Why is this worth saying? Because so many people have issues . So many Hawaii activities are water-focused that there are always slip ups – you don’t realize the key is in the pocket of your board shorts, and you rush into the pristine water at your favorite beach on a hot day.

Or worse, you try to be prepared by putting the keys in one of these when you go snorkeling but you didn’t test it in advance… and discover that it has a puncture. For the record, we haven’t had that issue but I always test for at home when I’m packing for Hawaii .

If your car key gets wet in Hawaii, you can first try to shake it, blow on it and put it in the sun for a while and hope that it dries enough to function again. Sometimes that works!

If it doesn’t, you’ll need to either call AAA or the phone number on your key tag for assistance. That’s not a big deal if you’re near one of the cities, but can be a real challenge if you’re in an area with bad reception. Even once you manage to make the call, it can take a long time (sometimes a few hours) to get service from a tow truck or the rental car agency, and it will be at your expense .

So do yourself a favor and be careful with those keys. Don’t say I didn’t warn you!

One of the weirdest side effects of the pandemic and travel slowdown of 2020 has been on the Hawaii car rental 2022 situation. In order to generate cash and stay afloat, many local car rental branches sold off their rental car fleets . The cars were their only liquid assets, there was no rental revenue coming in and they still had financial obligations to meet.

Unfortunately, cars are tough to get in Hawaii even in normal times since they have to be shipped in by boat. Manufacturing and transportation of all sorts of goods has been impacted by the pandemic, and cars are no exception. At the same time, Hawaii has seen a boom in tourism in 2021 and 2022 beyond even pre-pandemic levels. Even car deliveries in late 2021 weren’t enough to meet the rise in tourism. The net result is that there’s still a massive rental car shortage in Hawaii .

Many rental car locations in Hawaii have struggled to maintain enough cars in inventory to satisfy the reservations that are coming in. In some cases, would-be visitors are finding exorbitant rental car rates – sometimes as much as $200 per day! The best way to avoid that is to book your rental car as soon as you book your flights.

The other (really unfortunate) situation cropping up is that from time to time travelers show up to retrieve their rental cars and there just isn’t a car available. It absolutely sucks because there’s nothing you can do as a consumer to prevent that from happening and there’s generally no advance warning.

Thankfully, it’s a rare occurrence. Just keep your cool if it happens and don’t take it out on the rental car counter employees, who would absolutely give you a car if they could. Calmly ask to speak to a manager and see if they can call a colleague at a different rental car company at least pay for a shuttle van to your hotel or rental and then drop off a car for you in a day or two. Stay calm, stay flexible, and remember that travel during a global pandemic inherently comes with disruptions.

Renting a car in Hawaii is the best way to explore the islands and get out of the tourist-oriented resort zones or the big city of Honolulu!

If you want to see beyond the busy resort areas of Maui, renting a car on Maui is a good idea. If you choose not to, there are a few small shuttle/bus routes you can take (like the bus between Kaanapali and Lahaina) or you can sign up for organized day tours.

The minimum age to rent a car in Hawaii depends on the specific rental agency. The minimum age to rent without paying an extra fee is 21 or 25 depending on the company, and a few will rent to visitors as young as 18 (for a hefty extra fee).

Buying a rental car? Here's everything you need to know

Benefits and drawbacks to consider before you purchase a rental car.

voyage rent a car

Shopping for a used car can be a great way to save money on your next purchase, but looking outside the normal channels gives you a much deeper pool of vehicles to choose from. While some people balk at the idea of buying a rental car , signing the dotted line on a former rental can save you money and hassle. But there are some things to remember during the process. Lately, large rental car agencies like Hertz have made major headlines as they thin out their fleet of electric cars , mostly Tesla Model 3 and Model Y EVs but also others from Chevrolet and sometimes Polestar . But should you buy one? Let’s take a closer look.

Buying a rental car

All the major players, including Avis, Enterprise, and Hertz, offer car-buying services with vehicles they no longer field at rental offices. Their websites look like any other car inventory search tool, where you can filter by the make, model, year, price, and more. Many offer the ability to start the buying process online, and there are often discounts off the Kelley Blue Book values. While there are plenty of rental-spec Nissan Altimas and black Chevy Suburbans for sale, there are also a surprising number of luxury vehicles and sporty models.

What are the benefits of buying a rental car?

Since they are not traditional car dealerships , rental companies take the no-haggle approach, so the price you see online is the price you’ll pay when purchasing a rental car. Mileage and condition play a role in the prices, but they are generally not out of line with the rest of used car retailers like CarMax. Some rental companies offer shipping to a store near you, and others have home delivery options.

Rental agencies are known to keep up with scheduled maintenance, which is a good thing. Most rental agencies keep a newish fleet, and that means the cars they sell are still fairly new, too. That's important to many shoppers, as cars have gotten much safer in recent years and are packed with more and more technology than ever before. Some renters, however, may think of a rental car as a disposable object that doesn't require as much care as something they personally own. So it's important to take a close look at the specific vehicle you're thinking of buying to make sure it's not too worn out for your liking.

Why are some rental cars less expensive than other used models?

Rental companies buy vehicles in large numbers, giving them better pricing from the manufacturer. In turn, that allows them to sell the cars at more reasonable prices. While they’re not always the cheapest options, prices for former rental cars are generally set at or slightly below market values. The flip side of that is that many used car buyers are wary of rental cars because of the perception that they’re all abused and gross inside, which can impact your resale values if you decide to sell later on.

What should I look out for when buying a used rental car?

You should take the same precautions when buying a used rental car as you would with any other used vehicle. Unless you’re purchasing the vehicle remotely and having it shipped, rental companies will allow you to make an appointment to view it before the purchase. Some note that the cars are still active rentals, so you can’t walk in without having the vehicle pulled from the fleet and prepared first. If possible, take the car for a pre-purchase inspection at a reputable third-party shop or dealer . Some companies, including Avis, explicitly state that they allow buyers to take vehicles for an inspection, but it’s worth asking if the company you’re buying from doesn’t.

Though all of the major companies selling former rentals have in-house inspection programs, it’s still a good idea to check the tires for wear and dates and test-drive the car to make sure there are no surprising sounds or vibrations. The good news is that rentals are meticulously maintained, and the companies follow manufacturers’ recommended service intervals. You’ll also likely see thorough documentation of the maintenance that has been performed, and the Carfax report will show any known collisions or damage.

Do former rental cars come with warranties?

Some rental companies offer a warranty period with their used vehicles. Hertz, Avis, and Enterprise cover purchases for 12 months or 12,000 miles, whichever comes first. Buyers can also add coverage from a third-party provider, and most rental fleets offer a trial period of three to seven days to let the buyer get a feel for how the car performs in real-world situations. Like any used car dealer , most also sell add-on protection with coverage for tires and wheels, glass, theft, and more.

Why do I see so many rental EVs for sale?

Some rental companies over-purchased EVs, only to realize that they cost more to fix per crash and weren’t as popular as expected. Hertz currently has more than 1,100 Teslas listed on its site, and its prices are astonishingly low due to a massive purchase that saw it need to sell tens of thousands of vehicles. Buying a used rental Tesla or any other electric vehicle from one of the major companies isn’t different than the process for gas vehicles, but you should be extra careful to review for collisions and damage.

A cruise passenger on the Royal Caribbean “Icon of the Seas” cruise jumped overboard, prompting a search and rescue mission where the passenger ultimately was found dead.

The passenger jumped from the 1,200-foot-long ship shortly after it left Miami, Florida, for Honduras Sunday morning, according to a statement from the Coast Guard obtained by The New York Post.

Once people noticed the emergency, the ship immediately halted its operations and the 2,350-person crew conducted a search-and-rescue mission. The ship stayed put for two hours, according to Cruise Hive.

The passenger was brought back onboard in critical condition. He eventually died of his injuries.

It is unclear what caused the man to jump, although his identity is being kept secret for the privacy of the deceased individual and his family.

The “Icon of the Seas,” which is the world’s largest cruise ship, took its maiden voyage in January 2024.

Baltimore (WBFF) — A 22-year-old man is facing charges for allegedly participating in a shooting that killed a teenager and injured another in West Baltimore last week.

The two boys—ages 17 and 15—were shot in the 900 block of Dukeland Street around 3:40 p.m. on May 25.

An ambulance took 17-year-old Denzel Johnson to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center where he was pronounced dead by medical staff. Meanwhile, 15-year-old Aiden Houchens was taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital. Houchens survived his injuries, according to court records obtained by Fox45.

Charging documents show how homicide detectives tracked down Korey Hopson, one of the suspects in the shooting, after he fled the area in a rental vehicle.

Private video showed a white SUV driving away from the shooting site in the 2700 block of Prospect Street. That video shows a person wearing a white shirt firing a gun from the rear right passenger window while the vehicle was in motion, according to court records.

Investigators were able to determine that the SUV was a 2023 Nissan Rogue with a Pennsylvania license plate registered to Enterprise Rental.

The vehicle was rented on April 20 and due to be returned on May 7. It happened to be equipped with NissanConnect Services—a technology that allowed detectives to track the location of the vehicle, according court records.

Charging documents show that detectives contacted AT&T, the telecommunications company that was supporting the technology services for the SUV, and requested access to the vehicle's near-live location data.

Not long after detectives obtained permission to access the data, they began information that led them to the location of the SUV.

Several hours after the shooting, homicide detectives and detectives with the Regional Auto Theft Task Force went to Southwest Baltimore to look for the SUV in the area of the 4600 block of Rokeby Road using information provided through NissanConnect Services, according to court records.

Investigators saw the vehicle traveling eastbound on Rokeby Road and followed it as it drove into a wooded area in the 3900 block of Stokes Drive. They watched as two people exited the SUV and moved to the back of it.

"Detectives observed what they believed to be a flicker of flame from where these individuals were located near the Nissan, and a decision was made to move in to attempt to apprehend the suspects before the Nissan could be set on fire and the evidence destroyed," court records state.

Auto theft detectives approached the SUV, which prompted the two male suspects to run into the woods. They then formed a perimeter around the area to prevent the suspects from escaping.

Charging documents show that one of the detectives spotted the suspects exiting the woods about two blocks away from the SUV. That detective ordered the suspects to surrender and lay on the ground.

Both suspects were wearing white T-shirts similar to the one worn observed shooting out of the SUV in the private video.

One of the suspects, later identified as Hopson, complied with the directive while the other one ran away. He briefly spoke to investigators at Baltimore Police Department headquarters before requesting an attorney, according to court records.

Detectives recovered a cell phone from Hopson when they arrested him.

"Utilizing T-Mobile location data this cellular number was found to hit on a tower in the location of the vehicle fleeing the murder," court records state.

Investigators took Hopson to the Baltimore Central Booking & Intake Center and charged him with first-degree murder, second-degree murder, two counts of first-degree assault, attempted first-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, and firearm-related charges.

Hopson was prohibited from possessing a gun after he was convicted of possessing one when he was a minor, according to court records.

Frequent travelers know that The Platinum Card® from American Express (terms apply, rates & fees ) is loaded with premium travel benefits and annual statement credits that can justify its large annual fee. The Amex Platinum’s car rental benefits include protection against theft or damage¹ and elite status perks with Avis, Hertz and National Car Rental (enrollment required).

The card’s secondary rental car coverage¹ puts it at a distinct disadvantage to other luxury travel cards that include primary rental car insurance. However, Amex cardholders can also opt for primary rental car protection for a flat fee under $25 that’s only charged once per rental period (price varies depending on coverage selection and location).

When the annual fee can be worth it: Here’s how this card holder gets every penny back from the annual fee on their Amex Platinum

Amex Platinum Card overview

The American Express Platinum Card includes a variety of premium travel benefits for luxury travelers. In exchange for its $695 annual fee, you receive more than $1,500 in value, such as annual statement credits, airport lounge access, complimentary elite status and more. Here are a few of the major perks included with this card:

  • Welcome bonus: 80,000 Membership Rewards® Points after spending $8,000 on eligible purchases in the first six months of card membership.
  • Earn high rewards in several areas: 5 Membership Rewards® points per $1 for flights booked directly with airlines or with American Express Travel on up to $500,000 per calendar year, 5 points per $1 on prepaid hotels booked with American Express Travel and 1 point per $1 on other purchases.
  • Flexible redemption options: Membership Rewards points have numerous redemption options, including booking travel, cash back (via statement credit), gift cards, online shopping and more. Plus, Amex partners with nearly two dozen airlines and hotels, so you can transfer points to book award reservations through those loyalty programs.
  • Global Lounge Collection: Complimentary access to more than 1,400 airport lounges from American Express, Priority Pass (enrollment required) and more.
  • Travel protections: Your trips are covered against delay², cancellation and interruption³ when using your Amex Platinum to book your reservations.

How does Amex Platinum car rental insurance work?

To receive Amex Platinum car rental insurance¹ on your reservation, you must use your card to pay for the entire rental and decline the rental company’s coverage options. This coverage also applies when redeeming Membership Rewards points to pay for some or all of the reservation.

Rental car protection¹ covers Amex Platinum cardholders, their spouse or domestic partner and any authorized drivers.

Rental car elite status

As an Amex Platinum cardholder, you and your authorized Platinum Card users receive complimentary elite status from three major rental car companies. Each program requires manual activation of these benefits, and you must use the special code when booking a rental car to receive benefits like free upgrades and discounts.

Avis Preferred

When you enroll with Avis Preferred, you’ll receive Avis Preferred Plus status. This status level includes a complimentary upgrade (when available) and additional Avis Preferred points on your reservations. To receive discounts on your rental, use your Platinum AWD discount code “A756900” and pay with your Amex Platinum Card.

Plus, you’ll receive a free weekend offer after completing two qualifying Avis rentals in the U.S., Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands within the following promotional period: January 1 – June 30 or July 1 – December 31. Terms and conditions apply.

Hertz Gold Plus Rewards

Amex cardholders receive complimentary Hertz President’s Circle status with Hertz Gold Plus Rewards. As a President’s Circle member, you’ll receive a discount on the base rate, a 4-hour grace period on returns within the U.S. and guaranteed car-class upgrades on certain classes of vehicles (with at least a 24-hour advance reservation).

You’ll receive these benefits when paying with your Amex Platinum Card and using the Amex Corporate Discount Code (CDP) “211762” on your reservation.

National Car Rental Emerald Club

When you activate benefits with National Car Rental Emerald Club, you’ll receive complimentary Executive tier status. You can choose any car within the Executive Selection area and receive automatic upgrades when a full-size through luxury car is reserved. Plus, after six qualifying rentals, you’ll receive a complimentary rental day. You can also choose to receive airline miles or hotel points from one of National’s partners on your reservations.

What does Amex car rental insurance cover?

When using your Amex Platinum car rental benefits, your rental car is insured for up to 30 consecutive days per rental agreement. Eligible vehicles are covered up to $75,000 against damage or theft of the vehicle.¹

Additionally, this protection covers you for other charges beyond vehicle damage. Rental car companies may charge drivers for loss of rental vehicle use, towing charges, appraisal fees, storage, administrative fees and more. The American Express Platinum card covers all of these costs.¹

These benefits also include accidental death and dismemberment coverage up to $300,000, accidental injury coverage up to $300,000 and personal property coverage up to $2,000.¹

What it doesn’t cover

Although the most exclusive cards, like American Express, are known for excellent customer service and generous benefits, the Amex Platinum car rental insurance¹ doesn’t cover every situation or claim. There are numerous exceptions where you won’t be covered against loss. Here are a few of the situations not covered by your Amex car rental coverage that may apply to your next rental car reservation.

  • Vehicles rented in Australia, Italy or New Zealand.
  • Illegal activity by the renter.
  • Driving while intoxicated or under the influence of drugs.
  • Off-road operation of the vehicle.
  • Intentional damage by the renter.
  • Normal wear and tear.
  • Theft or damage to an unlocked vehicle.
  • Cargo vans, box trucks or vans with seating capacity for more than eight passengers.
  • Using the vehicle for commercial or “for hire” purposes.
  • Off-road vehicles, motorcycles, mopeds or recreational vehicles.

Additionally, these car rental benefits only apply to theft or damage to the rental car. This insurance does not cover damage to other vehicles or property. Nor does it cover injuries to passengers, other drivers or pedestrians.¹

How to file a claim for Amex Platinum rental car insurance

If your rental car experiences damage or theft during your rental period, you’ll need to file a claim . Since the Amex Platinum car rental benefits provide secondary coverage ¹, you must also involve your auto insurance carrier unless you paid the additional fee to make the insurance primary.

  • Start your claim within 30 days of the loss or as soon as reasonably possible. You can call (800) 338-1670 or go online at americanexpress.com/protectionbenefits . If you’re outside the U.S., call collect at (303) 273-6497.
  • Claim forms will be sent to the Amex Platinum Card customer after starting your claim. If you haven’t received these forms within 15 days, you can submit your own written statement with the details of your claim.
  • Submit your claim forms and proof of loss within sixty days. Required documents vary by situation, but may include an itemized repair bill and copies of the rental agreement, the charge slip for the rental, your auto insurance coverage, your driver’s license and a police report (if applicable).
  • Claims for benefits are typically paid within 30 days of receipt of all requested documents supporting your proof of loss.

Amex Premium car rental protection

Although the Amex Platinum car rental benefits include secondary coverage¹, many travelers want a higher level of protection.

Amex Premium Car Rental Protection has two coverage options that offer primary rental car insurance. Depending on which coverage level you select, you’ll pay either $19.95 or $24.95 per rental period. This is one flat fee per rental, not a daily charge. California and Florida residents receive this coverage for a lower price.

This coverage provides insurance against damage or theft of your rental car for up to 42 consecutive days (up to 30 consecutive days for Washington State card members). It does not include liability coverage for injuries to others or property damage. Coverage is worldwide, except for Australia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Jamaica and New Zealand.

This optional insurance can provide huge savings over the daily rental insurance fees charged by rental car companies.

Other Amex cards that offer rental car insurance

If you don’t have an Amex Platinum, other American Express cards include secondary rental car insurance¹ benefits at no extra charge, including (terms apply):

Trip delay insurance² covers eligible expenses up to $500 per trip when your flight is delayed more than six hours. Trip cancellation and interruption insurance³ reimburses you for prepaid, non-refundable reservations up to $10,000 per trip that are affected for a covered reason.

Amex Offers

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Yes, the Amex Platinum Card includes secondary rental car insurance¹ at no extra charge. Use your card to pay for the entire reservation to be protected against theft or damage to the vehicle.

If your lender accepts credit card payments, you can use your Amex Platinum to make your monthly payment. However, if they do accept credit card payments, lenders typically charge a fee to cover credit card transaction costs. Contact your lender to ask if they accept credit card payments and what fees they charge.

Another option is to use a balance transfer or convenience check to make your payment. If you choose this option, be sure to understand the fees and interest rate associated with the checks.

The Amex Platinum car rental benefits¹ are the best of any Amex card. While the rental car protection offered by eligible Amex cards is essentially the same, the Amex Platinum Card includes additional perks that make it the most valuable choice. These benefits include rental car elite status, travel protections and generous hotel benefits.

The Amex Platinum car rental protection is secondary.¹ However, you can upgrade to primary coverage through Amex’s Premium Car Rental Protection for one flat fee per reservation (varies based on coverage selection and location). If you choose this option, it means that you don’t have to involve your personal auto insurance policy when making an eligible claim for theft or damage of a rental car.

To learn about your credit card benefits, contact customer service, read your card’s Guide to Benefits or review the card’s marketing page. When searching for your benefits, note whether the coverage is primary or secondary and if any exclusions apply to your rental.

Renting a Car In Los Angeles: Must-Read Tips from an Angeleno

A re you planning a trip to Los Angeles and need reliable transportation? Renting a car in Los Angeles can be a great option to get around town. With this local’s guide to renting a car in Los Angeles, you’ll learn how to rent a car in Los Angeles and insider tips to make sure your Los Angeles car rental goes smoothly.

After reading this comprehensive guide, you’ll feel confident and ready to hit the freeways!

Be sure to shop around to get the best price on your LA rental car:

Tips For Renting A Car In Los Angeles

1.consider whether or not you need a car for your trip.

There are some very real pros and cons of renting a car in Los Angeles, but with the improvements in public transportation and ubiquitous ride sharing services it’s worth weighing your options. After all, car rentals in Los Angeles aren’t cheap!

For those visiting Los Angeles with kids , I would recommend renting a car. Taking Metro can be a fun diversion but will add time to almost every trip, and kids can get impatient.

If you’re still on the fence, check out my in-depth look at the  pros and cons of a Los Angeles rental car .

2. Research Los Angeles Car Rental Companies and Pickup Options

Renting a car in Los Angeles is a great way to get around, but it can be tricky to decide which rental company to use or where to pick up your rental car in Los Angeles. Los Angeles has all of the major rental companies like Budget, Enterprise, Hertz, Sixt and others. There are also smaller brands you may not have heard of like Fox, U-Save and Midway. Each company has its own pros and cons, from selection and price to locations. To filter through the dozens of options and see real-world customer reviews, I like to look at  RentalCars.com  and  Expedia – both of those generally offer free cancellation.

As of this writing, getting to any LAX rental car office requires taking a designated shuttle bus for  that  company. Beginning in 2024, the new Consolidated Rent-A-Car Facility will open and change the whole calculus! Everyone who wants to rent a car at this massive Los Angeles airport will take the Automated People Mover 10 minutes to the ConRAC. You’ll find all of the major brands plus mid-sized options like Fox, Europcar and Payless in this huge facility.  If you want to rent from a smaller local rental car company, you’ll have to take an additional shuttle from the ConRAC to their office.

This project is going to fundamentally change the experience of Los Angeles car rentals, hopefully for the better! If transiting around to a car rental office sounds inconvenient, keep in mind that getting a taxi or Uber from LAX requires that you take a green LAXit shuttle to the pickup lot near terminal 1 at the moment. That  may  change once the ConRAC is open… but I wouldn’t bet on it.

If you’re picking up a rental car at one of the other Los Angeles County airports like Burbank or Long Beach, things are much more straight-forward. At Burbank there’s a moving sidewalk on the sky bridge that takes you to the Regional Intermodal Transportation Center (which also includes buses and is across the street from Amtrak and MetroLink trains). The tiny Long Beach airport has its rental car lot right across the street from the terminal for ultimate convenience.

You can also consider “neighborhood” rental car locations. Because Los Angeles is such a big city, you’ll find these all over. For example, when I lived in Westwood there was an Enterprise at the end of my block and a Hertz just one mile away. These may be a good option for two reasons, both of them largely coming down to money. First, car rentals at the airport in Los Angeles, California generally carries a range of surcharges including a percentage of your total rental bill  plus  the airport concession fee. Second, many hotels charge for parking so if you only need a car for part of your trip it can make sense to delay your rental by a few days and only pick it up when you need it. It’s easy to compare both on-site and off-site rental options on  RentalCars.com  and  Expedia , just be sure to factor in the cost to get from the airport to your hotel.

A final option to put on your radar if you just need a car for a few days is your hotel’s rental car desk. Not every hotel offers this option and usually it’s only for guests, but it could be a great solution for you! Check out these great hotels that are transit-friendly but also offer rental cars:

  • Shore Hotel in Santa Monica
  • JW Marriott   LA Live  in Downtown LA
  • Loews Hollywood Hotel  in Hollywood

3. Be Strategic About Gas Prices

Gas prices can be a major concern for anyone who needs to rent a car in Los Angeles. They vary substantially throughout Southern California and even by season! Sometimes just driving a few blocks can help you save when you fill your tank.

The GasBuddy app is helpful for finding a reasonably priced station near you. Additionally, if you’re a member of Costco or Sam’s Club you’ll find great deals there though lines can be long if you go at the wrong time of day.

Whatever you do, be sure not to drop off your car with an empty tank of gas! You’ll pay dearly for it at the rental car desk. The good news is that if you’re returning to an airport location, there are gas stations all over the place!

4. Pay Attention to the Parking Rules

If you’re visiting Los Angeles and plan to rent a car, it’s important to understand the parking situation. First, you should  always  expect to pay for parking. I’m sorry. Anywhere you go that has free parking is just a bonus!

Second, download ParkMobile and SpotHero apps in advance and add your rental car once you pick it up. ParkMobile is used to pay for street parking in many parts of Los Angeles, while SpotHero can help you find a garage or lot space at a discount.

Third, if you attempt street parking be sure to read the signs very, very carefully. You are likely to encounter multiple signs in the same place and the amount of information may be overwhelming. Frequent restrictions include street sweeping days, no overnight parking, no parking anytime without a residential permit and more.  Police offers will ticket for all of those!  In places with no parking during busy periods (often 4-7pm), you may be towed at 4:01pm – I have watched it happen in my neighborhood.

5. Know the LA Traffic Patterns

Traffic is one of the few constants of driving in LA unfortunately. And because there are so many diverse industries in the city with vastly different schedules, “rush hour” can span several hours on each end.

As a rough estimate, you can expect heavy traffic 7:30-9:30am and 4:30-6:30pm on weekdays heading toward Downtown (and many other areas) and also in that afternoon slot leaving Downtown. Yes, there’s often evening traffic  in both directions . There’s also frequently freeway traffic on Saturday evening. If it sounds like there’s basically always traffic, you wouldn’t be wrong. Mid-day and weekend days provide a much needed reprieve.

What can you do to manage your visit through these inevitable LA traffic jams? Be sure you have Google Maps, Waze, or Apple Maps for dynamic routing. One of the best things about driving in Los Angeles is that there’s nearly always an alternative route even if it seems like a huge detour. These apps generally do a great job of sending you on the fastest path and will update for crashes or other hazards that pop up along the way.

Because Los Angeles can be a tricky city to navigate and you’ll be draining your phone’s battery with apps, be sure to  bring a spare USB cable  to leave in your rental car. Having maps on the car’s built-in screen is much safer for you as a driver and you’ll never be lost with a dead cell phone!

6. Choose the Right Car for LA

What’s the best car to rent in Los Angeles, California? It really depends on your needs, but there are a few factors to weigh.

If you’re on a budget, choosing a compact car will save you money on the car itself along with gas. A compact car is also an ideal choice if you plan to try for street parking around the city as some of the spots are tiiiiiiight.

On the other hand, if you’ll be going on a road trip from Los Angeles you might be better off with a bigger car that offers more space and creature comforts.

Families will want to make sure that whatever car they rent has enough room in the back for the kids and their car seats plus enough trunk space for all of the luggage.

Some people wonder if they should rent a convertible in Los Angeles. If it’s always been your dream to cruise PCH with the top down, please don’t let me stop you! But keep in mind a few things. First, the front seats get breeze but the back seats can feel like gale force winds are coming at your face. A convertible may not be ideal if you have more than two people. You’ll also need to put sunscreen on for every ride unless it’s the dead of winter. Trunk space in a convertible may be very limited depending on the specific model (which you won’t know until you pick it up). And you definitely shouldn’t leave any valuables in a soft top convertible, as a burglar can simply slit the top to steal your stuff.

7. Save Money On Your Rental Car Booking

Renting a car in Los Angeles can be expensive, but with a little research you can find great deals and specials. Be sure to read these tips to rent car in Los Angeles cheap!

As I discussed above, you’ll want to evaluate airport vs off site locations and weigh any cost savings against convenience. Be sure to factor in your initial transportation from the airport if you’re thinking of renting locally.

In general rental car rates are priced per day, per week or per month with those longer periods offering a better value. That means if you’re planning a week of road trips around Southern California you’re probably better off arranging your vehicle for exactly 7 days if you can – it’ll probably be cheaper than 5 or 6 days!

I always like to comparison shop  RentalCars.com  and  Expedia  for rental car prices. You’ll want book a  cancellable  rate as soon as you have your plane tickets, but check back frequently for changes in price. I’ve saved tons of month by re-booking rental cars when the price drops.

Another hack for saving money is to  join AARP here for just $12 . You don’t have to be a senior or retiree! You can score 30% off Budget and Avis rates by booking through their portal with the AARP member rates.

If you do book with one of these third-party sites (which I do all the time for cars and hotels, never for flights) be sure you still sign up and complete the company’s frequent renter application like Budget FastBreak or Hertz Gold. You’ll complete all of your info including credit card, drivers license and insurance preferences in advance. The key is to  call the rental car company once that’s set up  and tell them the confirmation number you got from the booking site. Then you can be sure that when you go to pick up your car, it’ll be waiting for you and you can avoid long lines at the counter!

Hopefully these suggestions will help you find the cheapest way to rent a car in Los Angeles. Just keep in mind that some of the cheap car rentals Los Angeles may be for older cars or inconvenient locations… YMMV.

8. Allow Time For Pick Up and Drop Off

If you’re renting a car at LAX, it’s important for you to know that it’s America’s second biggest airport for rental cars. It’s busy, busy, busy.

Right now when you arrive you have to wait for a shuttle to  your  rental car company (sometimes there’s a line of people, so you might have to wait for a second one). They’re slogging through “the loop”, which can be unbelievably slow at times, and sometimes stopping to pick passengers up until they’re full. The new automated people mover will hopefully speed up this process, but we aren’t there yet. Realistically, you should book your pickup time for about 30 minutes after you land.

Once you get to the counter, you may have to wait (unless you’ve followed my tip above about signing up for the company’s loyalty program). The long and short is that you should give yourself ample time between your flight’s scheduled arrival and any plans that you have, especially if you’re arriving on a weekday when there’s likely to be traffic.

When it’s drop off time, allow a few extra minutes to stop and fill up the gas tank, unload your stuff and wait for a shuttle back. While you might get lucky and find a shuttle waiting for you, often you may be standing around for a few minutes. Since those return shuttles aren’t split out by terminal, passengers flying from terminal 6, 7 and 8 (mostly United and Alaska) could have a long ride if the airport is busy. Give yourself enough time to avoid stress or even missing your flight! You’ll probably want to book your drop off time at least 2 hours before your scheduled departure.

Thankfully if you’re flying in and out of one of the smaller Los Angeles airports your process should be very quick on both ends!

Final Thoughts on Renting a Car in LA

Deciding on your transportation is a huge part of planning a trip to Los Angeles! Be sure to book your rental car as soon as you buy your plane tickets to ensure a smooth trip. Check out these sites to find cheap car rentals in LA from reliable sources:

Spirit Airlines’ CFO is ditching one troubled company for another, joining Hertz as the car rental firm tries to shake EV disaster

A close-up on a bright yellow Spirit Airlines jey

Spirit Airlines Inc. is losing its chief financial officer to another troubled company — Hertz Global Holdings Inc. — as the carrier works to restructure a crushing debt load and the car rental company reboots after a failed bet on electric vehicles.

Scott Haralson, who has been Spirit’s CFO since 2018, will take the same job at Hertz by the end of June, the companies said in separate statements Monday. He will join Gil West, another airline industry veteran, who is leading the car rental company as chief executive officer.

Spirit is  in critical talks  with bondholders to avoid bankruptcy by restructuring about $3 billion in debt and slashing costs after  the collapse  of its planned acquisition by JetBlue Airways Corp.

Haralson helped lead Spirit through the pandemic that widely gutted air travel as well as JetBlue’s planned $3.8 billion takeover before a federal judge scuttled it on antitrust grounds. The carrier also is in the midst of negotiating for additional compensation from RTX Corp. over a manufacturing defect in Pratt & Whitney engines that has grounded some Spirit planes.

Hertz is rebuilding after acquiring a fleet of mostly Tesla EV models that renters didn’t want and that cost more to repair than the company anticipated. Hertz also has been hurt by plummeting values for the EVs it bought after Tesla cut prices, resulting in higher-than-expected first-quarter losses of $392 million.

Spirit rose 2.6% to $3.74 as of 10:15 a.m. in New York. Hertz fell 5.3% to $4.13.

Hertz  is exploring options  to raise cash under West, a former chief operating officer at Delta Air Lines Inc. who joined Hertz in April after Stephen Scherr resigned as CEO.

Current Hertz CFO Alexandra Brooks is leaving “to pursue other opportunities,” the company said in a statement, and will stay on until the end of June as part of a transition. She had been appointed as finance chief in July, after having served as an interim CFO since April 2023. The car rental company also said COO Justin Keppy will leave effective Monday.

Haralson will remain at Spirit through June 14, when Brian McMenamy, currently vice president and controller, will succeed him as interim CFO. The carrier said it will hire an executive search firm to find a permanent replacement.

The airline has bled cash over much of the past two years as it contended with uneven demand, engine issues and higher costs plaguing the US domestic market. It’s already delayed aircraft deliveries, put some flight attendants on leaves with paid benefits and announced plans to furlough pilots starting Sept. 1.
