Who North America History

Who North America is a family-owned company that was started in 1998 by a Doctor Who fan (Keith Bradbury) to cater to the needs of the Doctor Who community in the U.S. It is the only Doctor Who retail store and museum in North America.

What to Expect From Your Visit

When you arrive at Who North America for the first time, you truly will find yourself in Whotopia.

Most people first notice the full-size TARDIS, which along with the sign outside has become one of the top photo ops for visitors. But once you are ready to explore, there are three sections to the building:

  • The Retail Store with aisle after aisle of Doctor Who merchandise
  • The Museum featuring the shop's private collection of Doctor Who memorabilia including a full-size “Lady Cassandra” overhead and the biggest Dalek cookie jar in America.
  • A Game/Arcade room boasting a Doctor Who pinball machine and Voyager arcade game for two-players. Both are free to play.

Who Treasure Hunt

When you visit Who North America, why not go on a little scavenger hunt and see if you can find these items:

  • The largest Dalek cookie jar in the world and the only one that made it to the United States undamaged because of how large and fragile they are.
  • Actual artificial snow from a 2017 Christmas episode of the show.
  • A replica Lady Cassandra . As the story goes, a customer made the replica during the 50th anniversary of the show back in 2013. They planned to just throw it away after the celebration, but the Bradburys wouldn't let that happen and kept it to display for all to see.
  • A rare Dalek postage stamp that was never postmarked. In 1999, Great Britain issued a collection of millennium stamps including the Dalek, which beat out John Lennon among others, and the Bradburys got their hands on one sealed in a glass paperweight that is now on display in their museum.

Virtual Visit

If you can't visit in person, we decided to partner with Truly360, a trusted Google partner, to bring you this indoor street view of our Doctor Who wonderland. The interactive 360 view allows you to explore their nearly 5,000 square feet of retail and museum space.

General visiting information.

Make sure your visit will be a success by carefully following these four steps.

Discover or confirm the whereabouts of the inmate you would like to visit.

Before you can visit you must be placed on the inmate's approved visiting list.

Review all visiting rules, regulations, and procedures before your visit.

Find out when you can visit and get directions to the facility.

Locate the inmate

Sometimes an inmate may be moved to a different facility so that they can benefit from unique programs offered at that location. They might also be moved to receive treatment for a medical condition or for security concerns. Therefore, the first step in planning your visit should be to determine where the inmate is currently housed.

Please verify you are a human by entering the words you see in the textbox below.

To visit, you must be pre-approved.

You can only visit an inmate if they have placed you on their visiting list and you have been cleared by the BOP.

  • An inmate is given a Visitor Information Form when he/she arrives at a new facility.
  • Inmate completes their portion of the form and mails a copy to each potential visitor.
  • Potential visitor completes all remaining form fields.
  • Potential visitor sends the completed form back to the inmate's address (listed on the form).
  • We may request more background information and possibly contact other law enforcement agencies or the NCIC
  • The inmate is told when a person is not approved to visit and it is the inmate's responsibility to notify that person.

Who can an inmate add to their visiting list?

  • Step-parent(s)
  • Foster parent(s)
  • Grandparents
  • No more than 10 friends/associates
  • Foreign officials
  • Members of religious groups including clergy
  • Members of civic groups
  • Employers (former or prospective)
  • Parole advisors

In certain circumstances such as when an inmate first enters prison or is transferred to a new prison, a visiting list might not exist yet. In this case, immediate family members who can be verified by the information contained in the inmate's Pre-Sentence Report, may be allowed to visit. However, if there is little or no information available about a person, visiting may be denied. You should always call the prison ahead of time to ensure your visit will be permitted.

Be Prepared

You should be familiar with all visiting rules, regulations, and procedures before your visit.

The following clothing items are generally not permitted but please consult the visiting policy for the specific facility as to what attire and items are permitted in the visiting room:

  • revealing shorts
  • halter tops
  • bathing suits
  • see-through garments of any type
  • low-cut blouses or dresses
  • backless tops
  • hats or caps
  • sleeveless garments
  • skirts two inches or more above the knee
  • dresses or skirts with a high-cut split in the back, front, or side
  • clothing that looks like inmate clothing (khaki or green military-type clothing)

Plan your trip

  • the prison location
  • the prison type
  • inmate visiting needs
  • availability of visiting space

The inmate you plan to visit should tell you what the visiting schedule is for that prison; however, if you have any questions please contact that particular facility .

What your dreams about deceased loved ones could mean, from dream experts.

Sarah Regan

Dreaming of a loved one who's died can stir up a range of emotions, from feeling comforted to reliving the grief all over again. And of course, there's the question of whether loved ones can visit us in our dreams after they've died. Here, experts weigh in on what these dreams could mean, what to do about them, and how to know if you were visited.

What is a visitation dream?

A visitation dream can be described as an emotionally intense dream where a deceased loved one returns in the dream to provide guidance, a warning, or reassurance.

What it means when you're dreaming of a deceased loved one

You're grieving.

In the case of dreaming about a loved one who's passed on, a study by dream researcher Joshua Black, Ph.D., shows these dreams can help us process the trauma of a loss , serve as a way to maintain connection with the deceased, and/or help regulate emotions.

These are essential components of grieving, and as therapist and dream expert Leslie Ellis, Ph.D. , tells mbg, "One of the most interesting things is, when we lose a loved one or pet, the vast majority of the dreams we have about them are comforting."

Professional dream analyst Lauri Loewenberg echoes this point, telling mbg her clients often feel comforted when a deceased loved one appears in a dream, and these dreams help with the grieving process. "When it's in the first couple of years after their death, and if it's someone you're very close to, it can still be connected to the grief. And it's really common," she explains.

You're projecting emotions

While a majority of dreams about a loved one who's died are ultimately positive or comforting, there are cases where this loved one may be angry, upset, or disappointed in you. According to Loewenberg, these dreams are most likely projections of your own feelings.

"If they're mad at you, for example, it's not their spirit coming through. This is you being mad at yourself for some reason," she explains, adding that these types of dreams are common if you feel you had unfinished business with this person or things left unsaid, and/or they died suddenly.

You could be self-sabotaging

Another potential scenario for dreaming of a loved one who's died involves them trying to harm you in the dream . Loewenberg tells mbg this likely represents a self-sabotaging part of yourself that's exhibiting similar patterns or behaviors as this loved one.

She suggests asking yourself if you're doing anything you know is self-sabotaging, or if there's something this person struggled with that you're doing now, whether it's frivolous spending, a substance abuse problem, etc.

It could be a visitation dream

And last but not least, there are some who believe loved ones can visit us from beyond death , including in our dreams. If you've ever dreamed of a loved one who's passed, you may have pondered the possibility yourself.

For what it's worth, both Ellis and Loewenberg believe it can happen and, further, claim to have experienced it themselves. Ellis was visited by her cat, Shadow, and Loewenberg, her grandfather, both dreams occurring shortly after their respective deaths.

Ellis and Loewenberg both also describe the same telltale ways of knowing whether you had a visitation dream, or if it was just a dream like any other, which brings us to our next point.

RELATED: Dreaming Of Someone Dying Who's Still Alive?

How to tell if you experienced a visitation dream

According to Ellis and Loewenberg, visitation dreams feel distinctly different from your average, everyday dreams. For one thing, Loewenberg says, the person (or pet) probably looks great, healthy, radiant even. Ellis adds when she was visited by Shadow, his coat was shiny and he looked to be in great shape, for example.

Visitation dreams are also typically comforting in nature, as if your loved one was letting you know they're OK, and they're around, supporting you.

As Ellis tells mbg, a good litmus test for a true visitation is when the deceased tells you something you didn't already know and it turns out to be true. "For example, a woman dreamed of her great grandmother, and in the dream was told to ask her mother about the back room in her house," she says, adding, "She did so and her mother burst into tears, telling her daughter this room was filled with dress-up clothes that she and her siblings would play with every Sunday at their grandmother's house, and these were her happiest childhood memories."

Visitation dreams are also typically not very long, according to Loewenberg, who notes the dream likely won't be unusual. It's often simply communication between you and the loved one in question.

What to do about it

In the case of a visitation dream, there's nothing to necessarily do besides take comfort in the fact that you feel your loved one reached out to your through the dreamworld. Loewenberg says you could also write it down in a dream journal and keep it in a safe place to treasure it going forward.

In other cases, she says, "it's definitely a call from your subconscious to try to come to terms with what's going on." Whether it's a feeling of unfinished business or not being able to accept they've passed, it's important to find a way to accept whatever it is.

One great practice for this, she says, is to write them a letter telling them everything you never got the chance to say when they were alive. You can also do your best to look for a lesson if you feel there were things unsaid, and "moving forward in your life, to never let things get to that point again with anyone you care about," she adds.

"When these dream figures keep returning, it brings a sense of continuity of connection," Ellis says, adding that toward the end of life, lost loved ones often come to help ease the life-death transition . "So while grief dreams can be painful, most often they help us through the pain of loss," she says.

Dream interpretation

There are some in the camp who believe dreams are memory consolidation at work and nothing more. Others, however, believe dreams are loaded with messages and interpretations for us to dive into.

As psychologist and dream expert Rubin Naiman, Ph.D. , previously explained to mbg. " Dream interpretation is about decoding the dream. It enlightens us and expands our awareness psychologically, [offering an] expansion of consciousness."

The key, he says, is to feel into the emotions the dream evokes in you, identifying more about the emotional experience as opposed to the literal visuals in the dream. "We need to learn the dream language; we don't always have to translate it into waking," Naiman adds.

When you can pin down which emotions the dream stirred in you, and pair it with the dream's scenario, it can help you identify something your subconscious is trying to get through to you.

The takeaway

Losing a loved one is never easy, and dreaming about the person can bring up all those feelings again. Try to find comfort in the dream if you believe you were visited, and if not, there's likely another message within the dream waiting for you to unpack .

Whois Domain Lookup

Whois search for domain and ip, frequently asked questions, what is a whois domain lookup.

A Whois domain lookup allows you to trace the ownership and tenure of a domain name. Similar to how all houses are registered with a governing authority, all domain name registries maintain a record of information about every domain name purchased through them, along with who owns it, and the date till which it has been purchased.

What does the Whois domain database contain?

The Whois database contains details such as the registration date of the domain name, when it expires, ownership and contact information, nameserver information of the domain, the registrar via which the domain was purchased, etc.

What is a Whois IP lookup?

An IP is a unique address of a server on the internet. Similar to how a telephone number allows you to connect to a specific phone on the telecom network, similarly, an IP address allows your computer to connect to a specific server on the internet.

Domain names and IP numbers are the framework upon which the entire world wide web is built.

IP numbers are assigned to networking organisations with a record maintained by governing bodies for each IP number and the organisation to which it has been assigned. A whois IP lookup allows you track the above mentioned details for a domain.

How do I conduct a Whois search?

Enter the domain or IP address for which you would like to conduct a Whois lookup in the search box above. We will query the appropriate database and provide a recent record.

How do I keep my Whois information updated?

If you have purchased a domain, the information stored with your Domain registrar is what is passed on to the Registry for the Whois database. Get in touch with your Registrar to make changes to the Whois contact information for each of your domains.

What steps can I take to ensure my domain privacy is protected?

Some Registrars offer privacy protection services that allow their customers to mask their actual contact details in the Whois search result in order to prevent their private contact information falling into the hands of spammers and scammers. Get in touch with your Registrar to learn more about your options.

Why are some entries hidden in my Whois Domain lookup?

If the owner of a Domain name has used the privacy protection services of their Registrar, some details may be hidden within the Whois lookup results. Additionally, some Registries proactively conceal some information in order to comply with local data privacy protection laws.

My information doesn't match the Whois results, how do I change my Whois information?

According to the rules established by ICANN, Registrars are expected to maintain the accuracy of the domain name owner's contact details in the Whois database. Most Registrars use the details provided by the buyer at the time the Domain was registered.

In case your information does not match the Whois results, you can change this information by getting in touch with your Registrar who will be able to assist you in updating your information. Once this information is updated, the Whois record will also update accordingly. On an average, it can take 24-24 hours for this change to reflect in the Whois database.

Can I register for new domains via Whois domain lookup?

You can use the Whois lookup service to find the registration status of a domain name. If the domain has not been registered and is available, you can use Whois.com to register the domain name.

Alternatively, if the domain name has already been registered, you can either register similar available domain names that we suggest, or use the contact information provided in order to get in touch with the owner and respectfully negotiate a sale. Do note that unsolicited contact is forbidden using the information provided via the Whois lookup service.

How do I find available domains through the Whois database?

You can check the availability of a domain name by searching for it on the Whois database. It will give you the status of whether the domain name that you are looking for is available or not. Doing this for multiple domain names over time can help you build a list of available domain names.

At select facilities families and friends can have video visits from their own personal computers in the comfort of their own homes. You will need the following equipment to do a video visit from home:

  • A computer.
  • A webcam and a microphone, or a computer with these components built in (most laptops have these built in).
  • An internet browser. Internet browsers Safari 4 and higher, or Firefox 7 and higher, are strongly recommended. How to Schedule a Visit

Free video visit policy.

Free visits are a benefit for the inmate and are credited to the  inmate’s account. Therefore the inmate is the only one who  can book a free visit . This allows the inmate at your facility full control of whom they want to use their free visit with. There are also advanced scheduling rules that control the timeframe that a free visit can be booked. These rules vary by facility. If an inmate books a visit outside this timeframe, they will not be allowed to use a free visit.

  • Book the visit with their Friends & Family.
  • Suggest a visit with their Friends & Family. The Friends & Family must have no prepaid funds on their account at the time they confirm the suggested time. The inmate’s free visit will then be deducted.
  • Confirm a suggested visit from their friends and family. The Friends & Family must have no prepaid funds on their account at the time the inmate confirms the visit. The inmate’s free visit will then be deducted from their free visit allowance.

The only way Friends & Family can use a free visit is by suggesting a visit with the inmate. If the inmate has a free visit available and there are no prepaid funds on the Friends & Family account at the time the inmate confirms, the free visit will be deducted from inmate’s account.

To be verified, you can make a deposit , schedule a visit or download and complete the Telmate Verified form .

Looking to see the planetary parade June 3? NASA says you may be disappointed. Here's why.

If you're wanting to see a parade of planets, experts say later this month may be better for viewing an actual celestial show..

visit who

Folks who are expecting to see a dazzling parade of planets on Monday June 3 may be disappointed by what they end up seeing in the sky and, instead, experts are saying they should manage their expectations and wait until the end of the month to see the planetary alignment .

The past couple of months have been pretty eventful for backyard astronomers. First, the solar eclipse in April, then the northern lights made a rare appearance in May, and now a parade of planets will make its 2024 debut.

Stargazers are supposed to be able to see six planets, Jupiter, Mercury, Uranus, Mars, Neptune and Saturn, aligned.

However, experts from NASA and Astronomers Without Borders both agree that it won't be the best time to see the planetary parade. That's because Uranus, Mercury and Jupiter will be swallowed up by the sun's light and be too close to the horizon to be visible.

Northern lights: Northern lights in US were dim compared to 'last time mother nature showed off': What to know

Experts say be patient: Planet parade will be more of a show later in June

"To me, the closest thing to a planet parade is June 29th, when you’ll have Saturn, the third-quarter Moon, Mars, and Jupiter arrayed across the sky at dawn," Preston Dyches, a public engagement specialist for NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory told USA TODAY. Dyches has a background in astronomy and hosts NASA's " What's Up ," a monthly video series that describes what's happening in the night sky.

Andrew Fazekas, the communications manager for Astronomers Without Borders, says that when it comes to the planetary parade on June 3, it will be nearly impossible to see all the planets with the naked eye.

Both Fazekas and Dyches agree that it's better to see the planetary parade on June 29, instead.

On June 3, Jupiter, Mercury and Uranus are going to be "way too close to the sun," said Fazekas. So, it will be difficult to see those three planets.

So, folks who do decide to rise before the sun does on Monday morning just to get a glimpse at this celestial phenomenon could be setting themselves up for disappointment.

In this case, good things come to those who wait. And waiting until the end of the month will give stargazers a better chance at viewing the planets.

"If you're patient and you wait until the end of the month, these planets will move farther away from the sun higher up in the early morning sky," Fazekas told USA TODAY "So, that you will get an easier chance to pick them out in the sky.

Folks will not only get a better view of the planetary parade if they wait until June 29, but they'll be able to gaze at the stars on Friday night into Saturday morning, instead of having to view it during the work week like they would this Monday morning.

Excitement from solar eclipse, northern lights creating planet parade hype

People are expecting to see something amazing the morning of June 3, said Fazekas. But, he's worried the expectations set by two very viral celestial events, the solar eclipse and northern lights, and sensationalization on social media could raise people's expectations a bit too high and lead to a lackluster experience.

He adds that he's concerned one bad experience that was overhyped online could steal people's enthusiasm about astronomy.

"What worries me is that we set people up for disappointment," said Fazekas "And then they won't want to do it again."

According to Fazekas, he's never seen so many people interested in sky-watching, and he doesn't want the excitement to end.

What will you be able to see?

According to a program called SkySafari Pro, you will be able to see the following during the planetary parade on June 29:

  • Jupiter, which will be closest to the horizon

What is a planetary parade?

Basically, it's when the planets form a straight line and look like they're marching across the night sky and form a sort of space parade.

It's also known as a large planetary alignment, states Delaware Online , a part of the USA TODAY Network.

What equipment do you need to view a planetary parade?

According to Fazekas, you will still need binoculars and telescopes to see some of the planets.

"Neptune is a planet that you need strong binoculars or a small telescope to be able to see," said Fazekas. "And it's not easy to find either."

Folks who go out to stargaze on Friday, June 28th, will be able to see Neptune right next to the moon. On June 29, it will be farther away from the moon, and be above it instead.

Apps, like Skyview on the Apple app store, can turn people's phones into a tool that helps them identify celestial bodies in the night sky.

Where will you be able to see the planetary parade?

According to Fazekas, people will need to do the following to get a view of the planetary parade:

  • Get up early, before sunrise.
  • Find a spot with a clear that faces the east or southeastern sky.
  • Have your binoculars or telescope ready to view planets that aren't visible to the naked eye.

A Proclamation on Black Music Month,   2024

During Black Music Month, we celebrate the Black artists and creatives whose work has so often been a tidal wave of change — not only by defining the American songbook and culture but also by capturing our greatest hopes for the future and pushing us to march forward together.

Our Nation has only recognized Black Music Month for 45 years, but its legacy stretches back to our country’s earliest days.  Black music began when enslaved people, who were cruelly prohibited from communicating in their native languages, found ways to express themselves through music.  Set to the sound of African rhythms, they captured the inhumanity, tragedy, and toll that America’s original sin took on their lives while also telling the stories of their hopes and dreams, faith and spirituality, and love and purpose.  Ever since, Black performers have carried on that tradition of using art to break down barriers, create sacred spaces for expression, and give voice to the promise of America for all Americans.  They have created and shaped some of our most beloved genres of music — like folk, blues, jazz, hip-hop, country, rock and roll, gospel, spirituals, and R&B.  Black music has set the beat of the Civil Rights Movement; expressed the inherent dignity and captured the pride and power of Black communities; and held a mirror to the good, the bad, and the truth of our Nation.

Black music is a staple of American art and a powerhouse of our culture — that is why we must continue to open doors for the next generation of Black artists.  Since I came into office, I have had the honor of bestowing some of our Nation’s highest awards to some of our most important Black performers and producers like Gladys Knight, Berry Gordy, Tania León, Queen Latifah, Dionne Warwick, and more — uplifting their talent and inspiring others to follow their example.  After making Juneteenth a National Holiday, I also hosted the first Juneteenth concert on the South Lawn — where the voices of Jennifer Hudson, Audra McDonald, Ledisi, and other incredible performers reminded us all of the beauty of Black music and Black culture that is American music and American culture.  Last year, Vice President Kamala Harris hosted the first-ever hip-hop house party at the Vice President’s Residence.  At the same time, I have helped secure over $100 million to keep concert halls, theaters, and other venues afloat during the pandemic.  In my Budget, I ask for a total of over $400 million for the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities — that includes funding for arts programs in underserved communities.

Black music embodies the best of American art — inspiring us, challenging us, and bringing us together.  This month, may we show gratitude to all the Black artists, whose work speaks to the soul of who we are, shows us the way forward together, and reminds us to lift every voice.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOSEPH R. BIDEN JR., President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim June 2024 as Black Music Month.  I call upon public officials, educators, and all the people of the United States to observe this month by honoring Black musicians and raising awareness and appreciation of Black music.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this thirty-first day of May, in the year of our Lord two thousand twenty-four, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-eighth.

Canadian serial killer Robert Pickton, who brought victims to pig farm, is dead after prison assault

Robert Pickton

TORONTO — Canadian serial killer Robert Pickton, who took female victims to his pig farm during a crime spree near Vancouver in the late 1990s and early 2000s, has died after being assaulted in prison, authorities said Friday. He was 74.

The Correctional Service of Canada said in statement that Pickton, an inmate of Port-Cartier Institution in the province of Quebec, died in hospital following injuries sustained in the May 19 assault involving another inmate. He was one of Canada’s most notorious serial killers and his case made international headlines.

A 51-year-old inmate was in custody for the assault on Pickton, police spokesman Hugues Beaulieu said earlier this month.

Robert “Willie” Pickton was convicted of six counts of second-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison in 2007, with the maximum parole ineligibility period of 25 years, after being charged with the murders of 26 women.

Police began searching the Pickton farm in the Vancouver suburb of Port Coquitlam more than 22 years ago in what would be a years-long investigation into the disappearances of dozens of women from Vancouver’s seediest streets, sex workers and users of drugs abandoned on the margins of society.

The remains or DNA of 33 women were found on the farm. Pickton once bragged to an undercover police officer that he killed a total of 49 women.

During his trial, prosecution witness  Andrew Bellwood  said Pickton told him how he strangled his victims and fed their remains to his pigs. Health officials once issued a tainted meat advisory to neighbors who might have bought pork from Pickton’s farm, concerned the meat might have contained human remains.

Cynthia Cardinal, whose sister Georgina Papin was murdered by Pickton, said Pickton’s death means she can finally move on from her sister’s murder.

“This is gonna bring healing for, I won’t say all families, I’ll just say most of the families,” she said. “I’m like — wow, finally. I can actually move on and heal and I can put this behind me.”

Vancouver police were criticized for not taking the cases seriously because many of the missing were sex workers or users of drugs.

Canada’s correctional service said it was conducting an investigation into the attack on Pickton.

“The investigation will examine all of the facts and circumstances surrounding the assault, including whether policies and protocols were followed,” the service said in the statement. “We are mindful that this offender’s case has had a devastating impact on communities in British Columbia and across the country, including Indigenous peoples, victims and their families. Our thoughts are with them.”

Pickton’s confirmed victims were six: Sereena Abotsway, Mona Wilson, Andrea Joesbury, Brenda Ann Wolfe, Papin and Marnie Frey.

“Earlier today, I was made aware of the death of an inmate at Port-Cartier Institution,” Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc said in statement. “At this time, my thoughts are with the families of the victims of this individual’s heinous crimes.”

At the time of Pickton’s sentencing, British Columbia Supreme Court Justice James Williams said it was a “rare case that properly warrants the maximum period of parole ineligibility available to the court.”

Opinion How Kenyans, Nicaraguans and other Americans see your donated clothes

One person’s trash is another person’s opportunity. Plus, the cancer we should take more seriously.

Regarding Kenya Wiley’s May 24 op-ed, “ Clothing donations pile on Africa’s problems ”:

Kenya Wiley claimed that if readers of The Post donate used clothing, their offerings will be “dumped in Africa, winding up in landfills,” harming the environment and local economies. Having traded for decades in secondhand clothes in Kenya, we found Ms. Wiley’s portrayal of our business inaccurate and somewhat patronizing toward us as business people.

Our own research shows that no more than 2 percent of secondhand clothes imported to Kenya can be characterized as waste because they are not in a condition that allows them to be reused or sold. Those who trade mitumba — used clothes — are serious business people and entrepreneurs, not fools who import waste from the Global North only to dump it in our own backyards. And to the extent Kenya has a waste collection and disposal crisis, used textiles are far from the core driver of that problem . Banning imported secondhand clothes would simply result in many cheaper, lower-quality clothes with a shorter lifespan coming into African countries.

Second, a ban on secondhand-clothing imports would risk devastating many African economies and harming our quality of life. The trade creates millions of jobs for skilled and unskilled people in Africa. Independent estimates suggest that each ton of imported secondhand clothes supports 6½ jobs in some regions. And these imports give tens of millions of people across Africa and the Global South access to good quality, affordable clothes.

The secondhand-clothes trade also has many positive effects on the environment, such as reducing carbon dioxide emissions and saving water consumption from textile production. For decades, we have led the way in making the circular economy a reality. Let’s not ruin it by banning or restricting imports of secondhand clothes.

I suggest that the correct solution lies with boosting investment in Africa’s infrastructure for reusing secondhand clothes (which is a more sustainable option than recycling) rather than destroying a vibrant source of green jobs for our people.

Teresiah Wairimu Njenga , Nairobi

The writer is chairperson of the Mitumba Consortium Association of Kenya.

While I believe Kenya Wiley gave light to an important issue, her declaration was over-generalized and could harm people who rely on those donations for jobs, affordable clothing and human services. She wrote: “If you’ve donated clothing to a local charity or tossed your stained shirts in a drop-off bin, chances are your discarded items will be dumped in Africa, winding up in landfills, water and eventually breaking down into microplastics.”

At Goodwill, the value of every donation sold stays in communities to support people in need with essential human services such as career counseling, skills training and job placement support. Last year, those donations helped 1.7 million people in need. Goodwill also extended the useful life of over 4.3 billion pounds of donated goods last year.

Each Goodwill organization sells unsold goods to aftermarket buyers, who then grade materials for resale, recycling, downcycling and export, depending on the needs of their buyers. It is true that some unwearable textiles create an environmental burden, often in the Global South. This should concern all of us.

Ms. Wiley is correct in pointing to a robust recycling infrastructure as a necessary part of the solution. Goodwill is working with multiple partners across the textile circularity ecosystem to advance solutions for textiles that are traceable, circular and scalable. Global textile waste is a multi-stakeholder issue and requires brands, retailers, policymakers and technology innovators to work together to close the loop on textile circularity and preserve the enormous economic and social value that resold goods provide.

Steve Preston , McLean

The writer is president and chief executive of Goodwill Industries International.

As a board member of the Santa Clarita, Calif., chapter of the Assistance League, a nationwide nonprofit, I found Kenya Wiley’s op-ed alarming. The money we make in our resale store provides clothing, shoes, eyeglasses and books to elementary schools. In addition, we provide scholarships, clothing and food to college students who have aged out of the foster system. We also support other nonprofits in our community. Our membership supports the Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center. We provide entertainment, snacks, adult diapers and nutrient drinks. The type of program depends on what the area chapter is able to provide and what is needed. If the donations are not right for us, we send them to another resale nonprofit or a rag dealer. Nothing goes to waste. I believe our items go on to live a long life and bring hope, education and security to others. Please give the other side of this story a chance as well.

Sue Fischer , Santa Clarita, Calif.

Supply-and-demand economics don’t stop at our borders, and it is both arrogant and ignorant to dismiss as waste what to people in low-income countries are vital and valuable commodities. And despite the way Kenya Wiley’s op-ed was framed, citizens of African countries aren’t the only ones who participate in the global trade in used clothing.

U.S. consumers who kindly donate their unused clothing should know their garments may be imported by our closest neighbors in Central America, where a 2023 report by my firm, global clothing reseller Garson & Shaw, suggests this vibrant industry will create more than 3 million jobs by 2040 and support those economies to the tune of $196.4 million in tax revenue.

Rather than peddle inaccuracies about the global secondhand trade, which is a thriving example of the circular economy in action, we should turn our focus on the real culprits of overflowing waste piles and environmental degradation: the fast-fashion giants that are swamping us with clothes so cheap they immediately become throwaway items, produced at rock-bottom prices thanks to inhumane working conditions and, in some cases, even slave labor.

Lisa Jepsen , Atlanta

The writer is chief executive of Garson & Shaw.

Kenya Wiley paints a grim picture of textile waste, suggesting that discarded clothing from Western countries often ends up in landfills, contributing to environmental and social issues. However, Ms. Wiley overlooks recent data on textile waste’s impact on African countries, including new research from Ghana.

A recent Ghana Used Clothing Dealers Association report challenges the prevailing narrative of textile waste in African countries, suggesting that less than 5 percent of secondhand clothing imported into Ghana could be considered waste.

One approach is represented by the work of the nearly 200 companies that make up the Secondary Materials and Recycled Textiles Association . Our members, spanning the globe, are part of a growing industry dedicated to the reuse and recycling of textiles and related secondary materials.

We cannot do this alone. All of us should work to establish a robust recycling infrastructure and supporting initiatives that promote environmental stewardship and economic development. Campaigns surrounding the recycling of paper and plastics have made a substantial impact. Governments should make similar legislative efforts to support the textile recycling industry.

We must recognize that we need to work together as a global community to achieve our goal of a circular economy.

Brian London , Rockville

The writer is president of the Secondary Materials and Recycled Textiles Association.
