Is Madeira a Winter destination? Short answers

What to expect when visiting madeira in winter.

Madeira has a lot to offer all year round . Specifically for Winter, you should expect:

  • Its climate is referred to as an “Eternal Spring” with temperatures around 19 to 20°C during the day and 13 to 14° during the night (at water level)
  • Sea temperature around 17°C to 19°C
  • Beaches with mostly pebbles (just a few sandy beaches with natural black sand or imported golden sand)
  • Stunning landscapes with lush vegetation
  • Colder mountain peaks
  • The island is still lively with locals – it is not only full of tourists
  • Activities still running – e.g. canyoning, dolphins and whale watching…

Ponta do Sol, Madeira

So, is Madeira a good destination in Winter?

Absolutely. If you are looking to escape the cold of Winter, enjoy some warmth and stunning landscapes, traveling to Madeira is an excellent idea. However, understand that it is not a tropical destination – many beaches have rocks, not sand, and temperatures are more Spring-like warm than hot.

9 Reasons to visit the island of Madeira during Winter

#1. climate.

Madeira offers a warm climate during Winter, great to escape the cold. Temperatures are Spring-like – around 19 to 20°C during the day and 13 to 14° during the night (at water level). There is rain but not as much as in Norther countries, and because of the mountains in the middle of the island, you can drive somewhere else to get a different weather.

#2 – Lesser crowds

Madeira is becoming increasingly popular, especially during Summer. In Winter, it is not yet the first destination that comes to mind. So except for Christmas and the Portuguese school Winter holidays, the island is not crowded with tourists.

#3 – Landscapes remain green and stunning

Nothing burns because of the sun or turn grey. The lush vegetation remains lush, not as vibrant but still stunning. Landscapes are as impressive.

lush vegetation in Madeira

#4 – Cheaper flights

Madeira is not the cheapest island to fly to in Europe because of its special landing and isolation. In Winter, when demand is lower, prices can be cheaper.

#5 – Special species of whales and dolphins

Summer is the best time to visit Madeira for whales in terms of quantity. But if you are looking to spot specific species, then Winter is the best time.

#6 – Waterfalls

Madeira is famous for its levada walks along the traditional irrigation systems that bring water to the plantations on the South side. Those hikes ( see some of the most famous ) take you to waterfalls. In Summer those falls can be quiet and have only a small drop fo water. Winter is the best time to see them with a full flow going on.

Almost dried up Madeira waterfall in Summer

#7 – Surfing

If you want to surf or learn to surf, Winter is considered one of the best times to surf in Madeira. The water temperature is ideal and the waves are here.

#8 – Tours don’t shut down

Since it is a year-round destination, you can enjoy most of the tours and activities in Winter too. Canyoning, whale watching… some tours are less frequent, but you can do in Winter pretty much all that you can do in Summer. See great activities in Madeira

#9 – Locals are less stressed out

This is very true on most touristy islands. During peak season, the locals get frustrated by the crowds and the demands of tourists. In lower season, they do enjoy the tourists more.

Madeira in Winter – Sun, Warmth, Weather

Is madeira warm in winter.

Madeira has warm weather all year round (but not hot).  Temperatures to be expected on the lower parts of the islands are:

  •  around 19 to 20°C during the day
  • 13 to 14° during the night.

Therefore, it is one of the warmest places in Europe in Winter.

However, if you decide to go explore the mountains, such as Pico Arieiro at 1818m in altitude, you will need to cover yourself, as temperatures will be lower.

Madeira Winter Sun – how much sun can you expect?

With climate, nothing is guaranteed. But because of the island’s geography, clouds come and go. It can rain, but not that much compared to the rest of Europe.

In Winter you have:

  • around 10 hours of daylight,
  • an average of 5 hours of sunshine during the Winter days out of those 10 hours.

But you can also chase the sun. Because of the mountains, it can be cloudy at one location and sunny at another. Check the weather map and webcams!

sunrise above the clouds

Can you sunbathe in Madeira in Winter?

Yes, it is possible to sunbathe in Madeira in Winter. As written earlier in December, January and February, the temperatures during the day at beach level are around 19/20°C. When the sun is out, because of the low latitude of the island, it is quite warm.

However, the sun is never guaranteed and clouds come and go. There is little chance to spend your whole day sunbathing…

Snow in Madeira

It is not much or frequent, but on the mountain peaks, it is possible to get some snow. So you could be sunbathing on a boat and looking at white mountain tops…

Visiting Madeira in the Winter Months – Tips

All of my normal tips about Madeira apply also to Winter. Check them out . But here are a few special tips to keep in mind.

Some attractions can be crowded in Summer with carparks filling up very quickly. In Summer, I recommend starting hikes and other activities as early as possible. However, in Winter (out of Christmas time), crowd levels are more comfortable and you can start your day later.

PIco do Arieiro carpark

How to get around the island of Madeira in Winter

In Winter as in Summer, I think renting a car is the best way to explore the island. It gives you freedom to go see the most beautiful viewpoints and stop whenever you want. There are busses, but the frequency is not ideal. Nothing special to think about the car for Winter. The same applies as in Summer, choose one with enough power for the steep roads.

Need to rent a car in Madeira?

  • Compare prices on my favorite platform:   Discovercars.com – one of the best rated comparison sites!
  • Choose a car with enough power for the mountain roads
  • And choose a car not too big, to easily manoeuver
  • Consider their full coverage option – it for peace of mind!
  • Book early to have a large choice of vehicles!

How long to stay in Madeira in Winter?

It depends on what you want to do. I still think Madeira is not a great destination for long weekends. It is too short, considering the flight.

To explore the entire island 10 days to 2 weeks is ideal. But if you just want to enjoy the Winter Sun, 5 days to a week will give you the boost you need to go through the rest of the Winter.

Be ready to change plans

The weather is even less predictable in Winter than in Summer. Therefore, make sure to plan flexibility in your planning. The island is not big, so it is easy to switch to another destination when you look at the current weather over the island.

Especially if you are hiking, make sure to check the most recent weather forecast!

Best place to stay in Madeira during Winter

I do love the North coast more than the South one in terms of landscapes. But if it is the sun and warmth you are looking for, then it is best to choose a location on the South side for your stay. It counts more hours of sun and less wind.

  • Ponta do Sol is considered the sunniest place on the island –  see best rated accommodations
  • Funchal is a practical place if you want to join group tours –  See best rated accommodations in Funchal
  • Funchal is also great to enjoy the Christmas and New Year’s festivities

Where to stay in Madeira?

  • Funchal , for a choice of restaurants and if you don’t rent a car –  see best-rated accommodations
  • Funchal Lido , for luxury resorts – see best-rated hotels
  • Machico , for a sandy beach – see best-rated accommodations

Madeira Winter Activities

What is there to do in Madeira in Winter? Almost the same things as in Summer. Check out my full article on the 35 best things to do in Madeira . Below are some of the highlight activities.

Dolphin and Whale watching

One of the major activities you can enjoy in Madeira is a  boat tour for whale and dolphin watching . The best period is May to September in terms of quantity, but tours run all year-round because they are around the island all year round. Plus in Winter, you could see special species!

There is a wide variety of tours, with different boats and services –  Check out the tour options & book With most of them, you can enjoy a swim just under the giant cliffs of Cabo Girao (589m tall!). This is a great experience! There is even one where you can swim with dolphins (if they find a pod with specific species) – learn more and book

dolphin watching in Madeira

Natural pools

Many people visit Porto Moniz for the volcanic natural pools. They are the most famous on the island. There are 2 areas: the ones that have been made smoother for public use and the more natural ones, near the fort. I recommend first enjoying them on foot: the long strips of lava, the shades of blue and green, the island in the background.

But then, make sure to get into the water (seawater). The place is ideal for those who love swimming and the views are mesmerizing. Such a relaxing place to swim.

Location –  North-West Coast Funchal to Porto Moniz = 1h drive

Madeira Beaches in Winter

Enjoy on the of the beaches around the island. Most of them have pebbles, but if you are looking for sand, for your kids to play, here are your options:

  • Machico has imported golden sand
  • Calheta has imported golden sand
  • Seixal has natural black sand
  • Praia da Prainha / Caniçal has natural black sand

In Winter, they are a lot less crowded and can be enjoyed fully. Learn more about the Madeira beaches in this article.

Machico beach

Madeira is a paradise for those who enjoy day hikes. There are many routes:

  • on top of the mountains,
  • along levadas,
  • around the cliffs.

Check out my article about the best hikes on the island.

In Winter, make sure you bring plenty of layers to be able to adapt to the weather conditions – for rain, wind and cooler temperartures (especially in the mountains). The lush vegetation along the levadas is even more special when wet!

Collecting Viewpoints

Simply driving around and stopping at all the incredible viewpoints “Miradouros” is a great use of your time. The views are stunning with valleys, edgy mountain peaks, forest, impressive cliffs… Check out my favorite viewpoints on the island.

And you can find my complete selection in my travel guide eBook, to easily plan your exploration:

Thanks to the island’s topography, the waves are fantastic, clear and with characteristic “point breaks”. The average ripple is 2 meters. There is high frequency throughout the year but the best season is between September and May.

Christmas in Madeira

How is christmas in madeira.

Madeira is a popular destination for Christmas.  It is a big even with festivities, decorations, delicious food… Temperatures are sea level are very pleasant, around 19/20°C during the day. Water temperature is lower (around 17°C), so it is not the best time for swimming but it is still possible to enjoy a swim.

Is Madeira hot in December for Christmas?

The weather is not hot, but it is warm. You can be in t-shirt during the day. You just have to carry a jumper in case clouds roll in. Average is 5 hours of sunshine over the 10 hours of daylight, on average. There is a chance of rain, but nothing like in northern Europe…

Christmas decorations

Because of the mild climate, you won’t find many traditional pine trees, but mostly artificial trees. They are traditionally decorated with balls, Christmas Lights, snowflakes, bows, wreaths, etc.

Madeirans love decorating for every festival and events.

If you walk around, you will also see many Nativity scenes in the form of a staircase or in a rock-shaped form (like a cave). Locals call them “lapinha”. It is often a small altar of three hauls, covered with a red and a white lace tablecloths. At the top is a small statue of the Baby Jesus, and on the other steps the shepherd, other figures and fruits.

Christmas Events

Madeira has several traditions around Christmas:

  • The Childbirth masses, a set of nine religious ceremonies (called “novenas”), taking place at dawn in parishes throughout the island. They happen between December, 16th and Christmas Eve. They are often followed by singing gatherings.
  • On December 23rd, there is a Market night in Funchal at the Mercado dos Lavradores – where people shop for fruits and flowers
  • On December 31st, there is a special fireworks show that entered the Guinness book of records as the largest show in the world (from 2006 to 2012)
  • Looking at nativity scenes all around the island

Christmas Food

Of course, no tradition is complete without food specialties:

  • Madeira Honey cake – can be bought all year round, but linked to Christmas
  • Christmas in Madeira is filled with sweets and the cookies
  • “Carne Vinha D’Alhos”

New Year’s Eve in Madeira

Madeira for new year’s eve.

Madeira is also famous for its New Year’s Eve. It used to hold the Guinness book of records title of the largest show in the world (from 2006 to 2012). It is not the largest in the World anymore, but it is still a fantastic show to enjoy if you like fireworks.

Say Yes to Madeira

Christmas and new year’s eve in madeira.

Christmas in Europe - Christmas light in Funchal, Madeira, Portugal | Co zobaczyć na Maderze w Boże Narodzenie?

Too early for Christmas posts? The Portuguese Madeira Island is a very popular destination for Christmas and New Year’s Eve. Therefore, if you are considering holidays in Madeira during this period, I recommend booking tickets as far in advance as possible.

Is it worth to visit Madeira during the Christmas period?

Yes, it definitely is. Christmas in Madeira can be an interesting experience, and the New Year’s Eve fireworks show, which gave Madeira the Guinness World Records title of the “Greatest Fireworks Show in the World” is really spectacular. Also, if you travel to Madeira via Lisbon, you may also want to take a day or two to explore the beautiful Lisbon in winter .

This is what you can expect when visiting Madeira Island in December:

Weather in Madeira in December

Levada walks and hiking in madeira around christmas and new year, flowers in madeira in december, opening hours and public transport in funchal during the christmas and new year period, aldeia de natal – christmas village, mercadinho de natal – christmas market in funchal, presépios –  christmas cribs / christmas nativity scenes, sopa de trigo stand – a traditional wheat soup stand , noite do mercado – market night in funchal, missa do galo – midnight mass, missas do parto, christmas dishes in madeira, city run volta à cidade do funchal /  são silvestre race funchal, new year’s eve in madeira island, hotels & ticket prices around christmas and nye, feliz natal .

What’s the weather like on Madeira in December? – is usually the first question tourists ask.

Well, impossible to predict, but the weather in Madeira around Christmas and New Year’s Eve is rather pleasant, usually on average around 20 degrees Celsius. This makes Madeira a perfect destination for a short winter escape. It is usually not hot enough to swim in the ocean and the famous lava pools , but  hotel pools should be an option. In Funchal, you might need a jumper or a light jacket at night, but around noon, you should be able to wear shorts and T-shirts.

It is important to remember, especially when choosing a hotel, that Madeira is a mountainous island with many microclimates, and the temperatures and weather in various places on the island can vary significantly. The area with the best weather is the lower parts in the south of the island, which is why most of the hotels are located there.

SEE POST: CLIMATE AND WEATHER IN MADEIRA

Can you hike in Madeira in during the winter months? Yes, of course! If the conditions allow it is usually possible to hike. It was the second day of Christmas when we walked a levada for the first time in our lives. It was also two days before New Year’s Eve that we hiked from Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo . The guide told us that the previous day visibility was very poor, but we were lucky. During our trip, the weather was great, we quickly took off one of three layers of clothes. We passed the route partly in light jackets over short sleeves and partly just wearing T-shirts.

Fans of flowers won’t be impressed. This is not the best time of the year when it comes to flowers. Personally, I do not recommend visiting paid parks during this period. A visit to the Monte Palace Tropical Garden between Christmas and New Year disappointed me, but I expected that. We do not regret the trip: we really enjoyed the cable car ride offering great views of the entire bay of Funchal, as well as seeing the famous starting point of the Toboggan, but the park itself looked rather sad. Around Christmas and NYE in Madeira, we will still see flowers, but it is not the same.

SEE ALSO: MAY FLOWER FESTIVAL

Christmas Eve, just as in many other countries is not a public holiday, but institutions and stores close earlier. It is advised to do your grocery shopping early that day.

On the first day of Christmas most store and restaurants are closed, but not all of them and tourists certainly won’t starve. Last time, on the second day of Christmas, we went for a very long walk from the eastern part of Funchal to its western regions. Most of the restaurants in Funchal were already open, as were some tourist shops and the little kiosks where they sell tours and excursion tickets. Closing hours of any particular hotel restaurant should be consulted with the hotel in advance.

Public buses in Funchal (“Horários do Funchal”) do not run on December 25th, but they do on December 26th. December 25th is, therefore, a great opportunity for long walks through the beautifully decorated city.

On 24th and 31st of December, the city buses in Funchal run according to the Saturday schedule. December 26th, according to the Sunday and holiday schedule.

These bus schedules can be found here:

Christmas decorations in Madeira

After returning home from our Madeira Christmas and New Year’s Eve 2018/2019 trip, I will definitely write a new article with brand-new photos. [Update 2019: SEE THE NEW POST  ].

Funchal is beautifully decorated during the Christmas period. Streets, bridges, trees, churches, houses, palms are full of lights, from the beginning of December. Thanks to its location on the hills, the bay of Funchal looks beautiful and colourful. The Funchal Marina also looks very cosy, with its huge Christmas tree made of lamps and large shining stars you can sit on. It also smells like lovely roasted chestnuts…

Madeira in December: Christmas and New Year’s Eve in Madeira Island, Portugal #madeira #madeiraisland #portugal #christmas #xmas #funchal

Most of the decorations can be found around the port (Funchal Marina), in the Jardim Municipal park, and on Avenida Arriaga street.

It is the Jardim Municipal, where usually the:

is being constructed. Great place for kids of all ages.

Madeira in December: Christmas and New Year’s Eve in Madeira Island, Portugal #madeira #madeiraisland #portugal #christmas #xmas

On Avenida Arriaga street on the other hand, we will most probably find again the:

with open until late hours wooden cottages selling and serving guests food and drinks, for example, multiple types of Poncha or a cherry liqueur called Ginjinha / Ginja served in a chocolate cup.

SEE ALSO: MADEIRA’S LOCAL DRINKS

That’s where you will usually find also folclore performances, live music concerts as well as some Lady Elves and Lady Snowflakes you can take a picture with.

Shops and shopping malls also do not stay behind. Here, a beautifully decorated shopping mall Forum Madeira on Estrada Monumental:

Christmas cribs are also popular in Madeira. For me personally, they perfectly represent what Madeira is – a wonderful combination of the familiar Catholic traditions, mixed with exotic landscapes and local elements.

Seeing the cribs, I always feel like during the holidays at my childhood home, but the incorporated local elements, add a touch of exoticism. Figures in these cribs are dressed in local Madeiran costumes, and cribs built on multiple levels, looking like a “mini-Madeira”.  As opposed to Northern Europe, the cribs are usually very green and full of flowers.

One of the biggest Nativity Scenes we saw was located on Avenida Arriaga, opposite to the Bank of Portugal Building. In that area we will probably find also this year a:

The Portuguese Sopa de Trigo is made of wheat, red beans, pumpkin, potatoes and sweet potatoes, boiled with pork ribs and lean meat. I hope that like last time, and entire “historic” soup stand will be dedicated to it. On that stand, just for a couple of euros, we were able to order a portion of soup and a delicious, warm garlic bread “Bolo de Caco“ from local cooks dressed in traditional clothes. This was not only a place to eat soup, it was sort of a “mini open-air museum” showing the life of the inhabitants of Madeira villages in the past.

This place starts serving Sopa de Trigo with freshly baked garlic bread Bolo de Caco from 26th of December. It is popular among tourists, but also local residents. At some points, lines to that stand were extremely long and frequently we had to share a table with other tourists.

Madeira in December: Christmas and New Year’s Eve in Madeira Island, Portugal #madeira #madeiraisland #portugal #christmas #xmas

Market Night is one of the biggest events during which we will really feel the magic of Christmas. It takes place on December 23rd around the Farmers’ Market ( Mercado dos Lavradores ) area, in the Old Town of Funchal .

That night, as the name says, on the streets of Funchal there is a pre-Christmas market, where we can buy the last products for the holidays, but also listen to Christmas carols and meet our friends. The city center is closed to car traffic, concerts and attractions are organized.

Later in the night, the Market Night turns into a party, especially for young people. Many young people live outside of Madeira- working or studying in mainland Portugal or abroad. Therefore, just like in my home country, it is a special and magical time, often the only period of the year, when all friends can finally see each other and spend time together.

Christmas traditions in Madeira & Portugal

A lot of people in Madeira work in tourism, which also means, they will most probably need to work during Christmas. However, Christmas is an important holiday, and whenever its possible, families get together, decorate their houses, prepare family dinners together. The most important dinner takes place on Christmas Eve, December 24th (“Véspera de Natal“). This is also when gifts are exchanged. After that, Christian families go to church to attend a:

A Midnight Mass in Portugal is called “Missa do Galo” (“Rooster’s Mass”). Its name is associated with a legend that says that the only night when the rooster crowed at midnight was the night when Jesus was born.

An interesting aspect of Christmas in Madeira, which I never experienced in other countries are also:

which are nine Holy Masses preceding Christmas Eve (so from 16/12 to 24/12) symbolizing the nine months of Mary’s pregnancy.

During Christmas period in Madeira, you can often find folk bands in traditional costumes marching through the city and giving performances.

visit madeira christmas

In this respect, I felt the biggest difference between holidays in Poland, where I am from, and holidays in Madeira. In Poland, we have a Christmas Eve tradition of cooking twelve dishes. Dishes which are not only delicious (oh my beloved pierogi …), but also unusual and are not usually cooked outside the holiday season. On Christmas Eve and during Christmas in Madeira, meat, fish and seafood dishes are usually served. Although delicious, these dishes are not as unusual, you can often eat them throughout the year, which does not give a sense of “uniqueness” of these dishes as much as I am used to in my home country.

Examples of Christmas dishes in Madeira are:

  • Carne vinha D’alhos “- “Meat in wine and garlic”: pork in a sauce of white wine, garlic with vinegar, bay leaf and spices; marinated for at least 2 days. This dish can be found in many bars and street stands in Madeira.
  • Perù assado com batatas assadas – “Roasted turkey with roasted potatoes”
  • On New Year’s Eve a Canja de galinha – Portuguese chicken soup – is usually served

When it comes to desserts, our hosts usually serve:

  • Bolo Rei (King’s Cake) – Sweet and colourful cake resembling a wreath or crown, filled and sprinkled with caramelized and dried fruits, raisins and nuts.
  • Bolo de Mel (Honey cake)
  • Broas de Mel (Cane honey cookies)
  • Arroz Dolce (Sweet rice) – rice pudding

The Christmas period is also a great opportunity to drink liqueurs and home-made Poncha .

We can burn all the Christmas calories straigth away – on 28th of December –  during the famous city run  „Volta à Cidade do Funchal”. Registration for the race is already open and possible until December 27th.

This race, organized by the Athletics Association of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, also has a long history – it is one of the oldest runs in Europe. The first edition of this run was organized in 1958. The event starts with the participation of wheelchairs, children, a charity walk and ends with a 6-kilometre run through the beautifully decorated streets of Funchal.

It is definitely worth choosing a slightly more expensive return ticket and staying in Madeira until after the New Year’s Eve.

Did you know, that the Guinness World Records title of the “Greatest Fireworks Show in the World” belonged for several years to Funchal..? It is amazing that such a small city on such a small island held this title since the winning show of 2006/200 until year 2012.

Although Funchal has already been dethroned, and despite the fact that the fireworks display is no longer officially the “Greatest Fireworks Show in the World” Madeira still remains famous for its spectacular New Year’s shows. Mainly thanks to Funchal’s location  in a bay and being surrounded by hills, the shows are truly beautiful. Fireworks explode at the same time in various places spread over the hills of the island- fired literally from every corner around the whole Funchal Bay, also from the deck of ships.

Fireworks are fired all around you; from the hills and from boats and platforms offshore. Multiple cruise ships arrive to Funchal for that night exactly, and many tourists had the pleasure of watching the show from their cruise ships lined up around the Port of Funchal.

The echo of fireworks, especially the “final stomp”, as I call it, [7:50 on the video below] really left me speechless and very impressed. It was by far the loudest and the most spectacular fireworks show I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen quite a few of them, including some 4 th of July shows.

Madeira in December: Christmas and New Year’s Eve in Madeira Island, Portugal #madeira #madeiraisland #portugal #christmas #xmas #funchal

We always book our Christmas tickets to Madeira as early as in the summer. This way, we can still find reasonably priced options. It does not change the fact that the prices are higher than in the high summer season, and several times higher than in the low season.

The same applies to hotels and Airbnb rentals. Do not be too late &  BOOK NOW .

Which a simple phrase we should learn to wish our local hosts in Madeira Merry Christmas. Another way to say it is “Boas Festas!” To wish them a”Happy New Year” we should say: “Feliz Ano Novo! / Próspero Ano Novo!”.

If you are reading this post in December – Feliz Natal 2018 e próspero Ano Novo , my dear readers!

Are you planning a trip to Madeira in December? Fantastic choice! The beautiful Portuguese island that’s only a short 2 hour flight from Lisbon , offers a fairly temperate climate that is perfect for enjoying outdoor activities and exploring its stunning landscapes. Let’s take a closer look at what the weather has in store for you during this time of the year.

Madeira experiences generally good weather across the board in December, with pleasant temperatures ranging from a minimum of around 17°C ( 63°F) to a maximum of 20°C (68°F).

However, as the month progresses, showers become more frequent, adding a touch of freshness to the air. Don’t let this discourage you though; it’s important to come prepared with waterproof clothing if you plan to explore the outdoors during these occasional rain showers.

Midday is when the weather truly shines in December. As temperatures rise, Madeira becomes an ideal destination for beach activities and water sports aficionados. If you’re not afraid to dab your toes in the cooler waters, then you may consider a quick swim, some snorkelling, or even trying out thrilling water activities like stand-up paddleboarding or kayaking.

The water temperatures tend to range between 18 and 23°C throughout the year, although December is a tad bit colder.

Imagine yourself basking under the warm sun on one of Madeira’s pristine beaches ,a true paradise for those seeking relaxation and adventure!

When evening arrives, Madeira still maintains its pleasant weather with a warm atmosphere and clear skies. It’s the perfect setting for strolling along charming streets, savouring delicious local cuisine at quaint restaurants, or simply admiring breathtaking sunsets over the Atlantic Ocean.

However, intermittent rains may occur during late December, so it’s always recommended to carry an umbrella or light raincoat when venturing out at night.

Average Temperatures and Rainfall

Visiting Madeira in December offers a unique experience for travellers seeking a quieter and more relaxed atmosphere. While it may not be the peak tourist season, there are several benefits to exploring this charming island during the off-season. Let’s take a closer look at the advantages and valuable tips for making the most of your trip.

Milder Weather

As already mentioned, one significant advantage of visiting Madeira in December is the milder weather. With average daily maximum temperatures of 20°C and average daily minimum temperatures of 17°C, the climate is pleasant and suitable for outdoor activities. While it’s always a good idea to bring along a jumper or jacket for the evenings, you’ll find that the weather is generally comfortable for exploring the island.

Picture yourself strolling along the beautiful levadas (irrigation channels) that crisscross Madeira’s picturesque landscapes. The cool breeze against your skin, coupled with the tranquil surroundings, makes for an ideal setting to immerse yourself in nature. The occasional clouds that might drift across the sky add a touch of drama and beauty to your walks, creating memorable moments along the way.

Less Crowded

Another benefit of visiting Madeira in December is that you can enjoy a more authentic cultural experience. With fewer tourists around (with the exception of Christmas and New Years), you’ll have opportunities to interact with locals on a deeper level. From savouring traditional Madeiran cuisine at local restaurants to attending local events and festivities, immersing yourself in the island’s vibrant culture becomes easier during this time.

When planning your itinerary, consider exploring Madeira’s rich history through its museums, such as the Madeira Story Centre and the Frederico de Freitas Museum . These attractions offer fascinating insights into the island’s past and provide a chance to learn about its unique heritage.

Off-season – Closures & Reduced Hours

It’s worth noting that December in Madeira is considered the offseason for tourism. As a result, some tourist accommodations, restaurants, or attractions may have reduced operating hours or even be closed. It’s a good idea to research and plan ahead to avoid any unexpected closures and ensure you make the most of your time on the island.

Fluctuating Weather Conditions

If you enjoy outdoor activities and want to explore the stunning landscapes and hike through Madeira’s renowned trails, be aware that weather conditions might be unpredictable in December.

It’s essential to check weather updates and trail conditions before embarking on any hikes or outdoor adventures. Additionally, wearing appropriate footwear and dressing in layers will help you adapt to changing temperatures while enjoying outdoor pursuits.

Lastly, keep in mind that December is not considered the best beach destination in Madeira due to slightly cooler temperatures. While it’s still possible to swim in the sea with an average temperature of 20°C, most people may find it too cool for their liking.

Instead, consider enjoying other water activities like boat trips that allow you to appreciate Madeira’s marine life and coastal beauty.

Exploring Madeira in December offers a different perspective on this enchanting island. The milder weather, fewer crowds, and authentic cultural experiences make it an enticing time to visit. Just remember to plan ahead, check weather conditions for outdoor activities, and embrace the unique off-season offerings that await you on this stunning Portuguese island.

Conclusion:

In December, the Portuguese island of Madeira serves up a delightful array of sights, tastes, and customs! The stunning environment of the isle blends perfectly with the high spirits of the celebrations, promising an unforgettable experience and one which we would highly recommend.

Christmas in Madeira

Food specialties.

Bolo de mel (Honey Cake) : Bolo de mel is a dense, dark cake made from sugarcane molasses, spices, and dried fruits. It’s an essential part of Madeiran Christmas celebrations and is often gifted to friends and family during the festive season.

Broas de mel (Honey Biscuits) : These sweet, round biscuits have a slightly crunchy exterior with a softer centre. Made from sugarcane molasses and spiced with aniseed, they’re a typical snack found at the markets.

Carne Vinha d’alhos (Garlic Wine Meat) : A traditional Madeiran dish, it’s made by marinating pork in garlic, wine, and spices for several days before frying. Eaten especially around Christmas time, it has a tangy, robust flavour that pairs well with local bread.

Rabanadas (Madeiran French Toast) : Similar to the French toast known elsewhere, rabanadas in Madeira have a twist. Soaked in a mixture of milk, sugar, and cinnamon, they’re fried until golden and then sprinkled with powdered sugar.

Poncha : Poncha is a popular local drink, a mix of aguardente de cana (a local distilled alcohol from sugarcane), honey, sugar, and lemon or orange juice. It’s a warming beverage, especially enjoyed during the cooler months.

Aguardente de cana : A distilled spirit made from sugarcane, aguardente de cana is often consumed straight or used as a base for other drinks, like Poncha.

Peixe Espada preto com banana (Black Scabbardfish with Banana) : An unusual combination for many, this dish consists of deep-fried black scabbardfish served alongside a caramelised banana. The contrasting flavours and textures make it a unique Madeiran treat.

Milho frito (Fried Cornmeal) : Milho frito is a side dish made from cornmeal, kale, and seasonings. Shaped into small cubes and deep-fried, they’re crispy outside and soft inside, providing a delightful contrast.

Vinho da Madeira (Madeira Wine) : Originating from the island, Madeira wine is a type of fortified wine with a rich, nuanced taste. It’s available in various styles, from dry wines that can be consumed with meals to sweeter ones that serve as dessert wines.

Gifts and Stocking Fillers

Bordado Madeirense (Madeira Embroidery) : Madeira is renowned for its intricate embroidery crafted meticulously by hand. The designs often depict local flora and fauna, and they grace everything from tablecloths to shawls. These make sophisticated gifts, representing the island’s rich textile heritage and craftsmanship.

Vime (Wickerwork) : Camacha, a village in Madeira, is known as the heart of the island’s wickerwork industry. Wicker baskets, furniture, and even decorative items are found at the winter markets. They’re handwoven with precision, making each piece unique and reflective of Madeira’s artisanal tradition.

Cerâmica (Ceramics) : Local artisans produce beautiful ceramic pieces inspired by Madeira’s landscapes and traditions. Plates, bowls, and decorative items can be found in various styles and sizes, making them a popular choice for those looking to bring home a piece of Madeiran artistry.

Vinho da Madeira (Madeira Wine) : Beyond just being a beverage, Madeira wine is also a cherished gift. Bottles from different years and of varied sweetness levels can be found. Its distinct taste and long shelf life make it an ideal present for wine enthusiasts.

Frutas Cristalizadas (Crystalised Fruits) : Madeira has a rich tradition of preparing crystalised fruits, which includes exotic varieties grown on the island. Packed in decorative boxes or bags, they’re tasty and presentable as gifts for loved ones.

Açúcar-de-cana (Sugarcane Products) : Madeira’s sugarcane industry produces various products that are sold as souvenirs. These range from sugarcane honey to sugarcane brandy. The unique flavour and quality make these products a sweet reminder of your visit to Madeira.

Licores (Liqueurs) : Produced locally, these liqueurs are crafted from tropical fruits and flowers found on the island. Flavours like passion fruit, banana, and even hibiscus can be found. They’re often beautifully bottled, making them a fine gift option.

Sustainable Travel Tips

Here are some suggestions for travelling responsibly in Madeira this Christmas:

Eco-friendly Accommodation : When choosing a place to stay in Madeira, consider eco-friendly hotels that prioritise sustainability. Many hotels on the island have begun to harness renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power, to reduce their carbon footprint. By supporting such places, you contribute to a greener tourism industry.

Mindful Consumption at Markets : While the Christmas markets in Madeira are tempting with a variety of goods on offer, it’s essential to shop mindfully. Before making a purchase, ask yourself if you truly need the item or if it will be used. This reduces unnecessary waste and promotes more ethical consumer behaviour.

Reduce Food Waste : Madeira’s markets offer an array of delicious treats. However, try only to order portions you can finish to minimise food waste. If you find yourself with leftovers, consider sharing with fellow travellers or asking for takeaway containers.

Sustainable Diets : Madeira has a rich culinary tradition, much of which is based on locally sourced ingredients. Opt for dishes that use seasonal and local produce, reducing the carbon footprint associated with transporting goods. For instance, choosing local seafood over imported meats can be a more sustainable choice.

Travel Around Madeira Responsibly : Madeira’s efficient public transport system covers most of the island’s key attractions. Opt for buses or shared rides over private taxis. Additionally, the island’s compact nature makes walking a viable and environmentally friendly option, especially within Funchal.

The weather in Madeira in December is mild and temperate, making it an attractive destination for those looking to escape the cold winters. Compared to the dry summer months, the weather becomes cooler and wetter but remains pleasantly warm. This period sees a combination of sunny days and moderate rainfall, which can have a dual impact on travel plans.

On the one hand, sunny days allow for uninterrupted outdoor activities such as hiking, exploring lush gardens, and admiring the island's festive decorations. On the other hand, the increased likelihood of rain may require flexible scheduling, especially for outdoor adventures and transportation, as periodic downpours can alter schedules.

December is also characterized by an outbreak of high season in Madeira, primarily due to holiday festivities and New Year celebrations that attract visitors worldwide. The island is known for its spectacular fireworks display on New Year's Eve, which draws crowds of people seeking both winter warmth and festive cheer.

Overall, December is a great time to visit Madeira if you want a balance of winter warmth, festive atmosphere, and natural beauty. Although the rains may require some flexibility in planning, the moderate temperatures combined with unique holiday activities make Madeira an attractive choice for a December vacation .

Madeira enjoys a mild and temperate climate in December, with average temperatures averaging around 20°C (68°F) during the day and dropping to 14°C (57°F) at night. This slight difference between day and night temperatures means that evenings are comfortably cool, perfect for enjoying Madeira's festive lights and nightlife, while days remain warm enough for exploring the island's natural beauty and outdoor activities.

Compared to other seasons, temperatures in December are considerably cooler than the peak summer months of July and August, when average temperatures can rise above 25°C (77°F) . However, December is warmer than the coldest months of January and February, where temperatures are slightly lower, highlighting Madeira's appeal as a winter vacation destination with its relatively stable and mild climate all year round.

The moderate weather in December provides a respite from the colder climates that characterize much of Europe and North America and makes Madeira an attractive winter vacation destination. The balance of moderate daytime temperatures and cool evenings provides a comfortable environment for enjoying both the natural and holiday aspects of the island.

In December, Madeira sees an increase in tourist traffic, especially during the holidays, as visitors are attracted by the famous New Year fireworks and the festive atmosphere of the island. This period, on par with the summer months, is the high season, resulting in a general increase in prices for accommodation, flights, and some services. However, the cost is often justified by unique experiences such as the Christmas lights in Funchal, mild winter weather, and festive events unlike any other time of the year.

In comparison, months such as January and February following the holiday season, or late spring and early fall such as May and September, offer less tourist traffic and potentially more competitive prices but still provide pleasant weather and the opportunity to enjoy the island's attractions without the December crowds.

Nevertheless, even though in December Madeira has higher tourist numbers and prices, the benefits of visiting the island during this festive month - enjoying the holiday spirit, exceptional weather, and colorful celebrations - make it an attractive choice for those looking for a unique winter vacation destination.

Christmas Traditions in Madeira Island

Christmas Traditions in Madeira Island

The Madeiran Christmas

Christmas in Madeira Island has a special charm that for Madeirans is simply like no other. The “Feast Day” is related in every sense of the word to the island traditions. People from Madeira usually use the expressions “for the Feast”, “the pork for the Feast”, “the Feast month”, “after the Feast”, taking as reference the date adopted for the celebration of the birth of Jesus. It’s a season full of traditions, stemming from the ethnography and folklore of the island, revealing the “historical” side of the Madeiran soul. Even today, these traditions perpetuate themselves through time! Here are some of the Christmas traditions in Madeira Island, although the ideal thing is to see with your own eyes how wonderful it is to be here at this time of year.

Nativity Scenes and “Lapinhas”

In Madeira, the nativitity cribs (native scenes) are build in two forms: in the form of a staircase or in a rock-shaped form. In general, both are referred to as “lapinha” by the locals.

“Lapinha” (in Staircase)

Christmas Traditions in Madeira Island

The “Lapinha” in Staircase, or simply “Lapinha”, consists of a small altar of three hauls (the staircase) that is placed on a table or chest of drawers covered with a red and burgundy tablecloth and, on top of it, another lacy white tablecloth. On the top is placed a small statue of the Baby Jesus, and on the other steps the shepherds and other figures of the nativity scene, as well as, fruits such as oranges, pears, nuts and wheat seeds.

“Rochinha” (Rock-shaped)

Lapinha em Rochinha tradicional da ilha da Madeira

The rock-shaped “Lapinha” is done imitating mountains, valleys and a grotto. The little rock recreates the landscape of the island. Once the rock is made, paths are built, lakes, streams, waterfalls and “levadas”. Then figures are placed: there are houses and churches, fruits, sheep and sheperds. Finally, the Baby Jesus is placed in the nativity crib, together with Mary, Joseph and the three wise men.

The Christmas Tree

The Traditional Christmas Tree was traditionally bought at the farmers’ market, to retain the natural smell inside the house. Nowadays, most people already buy their artificial christmas tree. The decoration of the Christmas tree is usually made with shiny balls, christmas lights, snowflakes, bows, wreaths, etc. At the top of the christmas tree stands the star. It is very traditional for the Christmas tree to be accompanied by the rock-shaped Lapinha.

Childbirth Masses “Missas do Parto”

Midnight Mass “Missa do Galo”

The Midnight Mass or the Rooster Mass is a mass that takes place at midnight from December 24th to December 25th and is celebrated after the Christmas Eve dinner. It is called the Rooster Mass, due to the legend of a rooster, which is believed to have been the first animal to witness the birth of the baby Jesus, which caused him to announce the birth of Christ every Christmas through his singing.

The Market Night “A Noite do Mercado”

noite do mercado na Ilha da Madeira

On December 23rd, all the roads will take you to the Farmers’ Market in Funchal. It is called “The Market Night”. The Market Night tradition dates back to the 1940s when Madeiran people took advantage of one of the last opportunities to buy fresh fruits and vegetables for the holiday season. It is the ideal day to visit the market and get to know and buy all kinds of regional products: fruits, vegetables, flowers, sweets and typical Christmas drinks. In the last twenty years, this night has become one of the trademark images of Madeiran Christmas. Today, the streets surrounding the marketplace are filled with music, entertainment, food and drink stalls, with “carne de vinha d’alhos” sandwiches and the regional “poncha” being the great attractions of the evening.

The Christmas Lighting in Madeira

A Iluminação de Natal na Madeira

The Christmas lighting in Funchal begins on December 1st and lasts until January 8th. The magnificent Christmas decorations and the Funchal streets animation make Madeira a popular tourist destination at this time of year. It’s a tradition to see families walking around the main streets of Funchal, such as Rua Fernão de Ornelas, Avenida do Mar, Avenida Arriaga, Rua do Aljube. An authentic spectacle not to be missed!

Typical Christmas Foods and Drinks in Madeira

At Christmas, it is a tradition to make some typical dishes from Madeira Islands, such as “vinha d’alhos” meat and chicken soup. In addition to these, there is a variety of drinks and sweets much appreciated at Christmas and New Year’s Eve.

Madeira Honey Cake

“Carne vinha D’alhos” is a typical Christmas dish in Madeira Island. The “meat with garlic and wine” is a simple, traditional delicacy in the island, which is always present on the tables of the locals in the Christmas season. This gastronomic delicacy is also related to another holiday tradition, the slaughter of the pig. It is made with pork, white wine, vinegar, garlic, bay leaf, savory, salt and pepper, and left to marinate for at least two days. Then it is cooked in the marinade and stored. At the time of eating it is fried with pork lard and accompanied with bread fried in the same fat of the pork.
