GPO

If you live in Dublin, or if you’ve visited in the past, it’s highly likely that you’ve spent a bit of time on O’Connell Street.

Glasnevin Cemetery

Glasnevin Cemetery opened on the 21st of February, 1832. I can’t recommend the physical tour here enough – definitely pop it onto your to-visit-when-things-get-back-to-normal list.

The General History runs every day and there’s a re-enactment at 14:30 on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

I have been lucky enough to visit Ireland twice.....so far! I cried when I left....I felt such a an emotional pull...a place of majesty and forever beauty!

Best virtual tours and virtual field trips to visit Ireland from your own home!

virtual tour to ireland

A selection of the best virtual tours and virtual field trips in Ireland to see the beauty of the Emerald Isle without leaving your house. Perfect for armchair travelers and travel planning!

Visiting Ireland is a full-body experience.

Your eyes see the country’s beauty, your skin tickles under the caress of the Irish wind, your ears resound with the screams of the bird, your nose takes in the Irish clean air and your palate delights in the earthy Irish foods and drinks.

A virtual your will never replace these experiences however, virtual field trips or virtual tours as they are also called, can be an excellent way to get a taste of Ireland when travel is not possible or anytime you want an Ireland fix from the comfort of your own home.

I discovered virtual tours in March 2020, when world travel came to a halt, and I can’t get enough of them. Some of them are absolutely wonderful and I discovered they are a wonderful aid to travel planning.

Thanks to them, you can get a sense of a specific attraction, familiarize yourself with it, figure if it is suitable for your kids and make an educated choice about whether to then try and go see the actual thing or give it a miss altogether (that’s a totally acceptable outcome too)!

Not everywhere in Ireland is accessible by virtual tour but some locations are. This is my selection of the best virtual yours in Ireland.

Virtual field trip to Blarney Castle, Cork

Blarney Castle in County Cork needs no presentation.

One of the most famous places in the whole of the country, it regularly features in Ireland itineraries and indeed, it is worth its fame: I find Blarney Castle on of the most beautiful places in Ireland.

Blarney deserves a visit but also has an excellent virtual tour that you can easily access from your computer.

The tour is a sequence of images that you can move around using your mouse of laptop pad and allows you to see different parts of the castle and its gardens.

My favorite part, both in real life and in the virtual yours, is the poison garden and the nearby forest! I must not be the only one to think that as this is where the tour starts!

You can access the Blarney Castle Virtual your for free here

360 degrees virtual visit of Trinity College Historical Library, Dublin

One of my favorite cultural attractions in Ireland is the wonderful Long Room, the historical library of Trinity College, in Dublin .

The library is an incredible, vast space entirely covered with books: floor to ceiling, dark wooden shelves host over 200,000 books! The library is hosted in the same building as the famous book of Kells and both can be, somehow, enjoyed online.

You can find a 360-degree interactive photo of the library here , which gives a sense of the scale and beauty of it, and you can see the Book of Kells close up here .

The Book of Kells is wonderful and actually, incredibly interesting seen this way as you can really take in the detailing, which is breathtaking!

Cliffs of Moher Virtual Tour, Co Galway

The stunning Cliffs of Moher are super photogenic so I knew a virtual tour of them would be excellent and, indeed, it is!

I find it great to visit the cliffs remotely but also as a tool to plan your visit: if you are worried about visiting the cliffs with a fear of heights, for instance, seeing what the viewing points are truly like can help you gauge suitability.

You can access the virtual on the official cliffs website here . Just click on any image you fancy to get started!

The Giants Causeway Virtual Tour, NI

The Giants Causeway is one of my favorite places in the island of Ireland and one so beautiful it literally took my breath away when I first saw it.

It was a stunning vision that seemed to mix the best of Ireland, a pacific island, Iceland and God knows what more. The causeway is truly unique.

The causeway is managed by the UK National Trust (it is in Northern Ireland) and you can access their official virtual tour here . Scroll down the page a little and click on the ‘take in the view’ button to get started.

Carrick-a-rede Rope Bridge, Northern Ireland

if you were visiting the Giants Causeway in real life, chances are you would also be visiting the suspended rope bridge of Carrick-a-rede, only a short drive along the same coast.

The bridge is on a wonderful stretch of coastline but it is not for people with a fear of heights: I went all the way to its start to find I was simply unable to step onto it for vertigo!

If you are like me or just want to check how scary it is, now you can: access the virtual tour here

The Chester Beatty Library, Dublin

This one is for museum lovers! The Chester Beatty Library is a wonderful museum in the grounds of Dublin Castle, hosting a world-renown collection of manuscripts and rare books from Europe, the Middle East, North Africa and Asia.

The collection is beautiful in real life but worth exploring virtually too.

You can access both the virtual tour of the museum and their digital library clicking here

Cobh Heritage Centre and Titanic Experience, Co Cork

The town of Cobh is famous for being the last stop of the Titanic, as well as more generally an important emigration port.

Cobh preserves the memory of these events with two different attractions, the Cobh Heritage Centre and the Titanic experience, covering respectively the experience of the over 6 million people who had to emigrate from Ireland by sea between 1848 and 1950 and the story of the fateful Titanic trip.

We visited the heritage center in person and found it amazing for both adults and kids.

You can access the heritage centre here or virtually have the Titanic Experience clicking here

Ashford Castle, Co Mayo virtual tour

If you have been researching castle hotels in Ireland, chances are you have come across the wonderful Ashford Castle one of the most beautiful, luxurious and truly regal castle hotels in Ireland.

A night here is not cheap and if take a peek inside, you will immediately see why! Have a look and start dreaming clicking here

Virtual tour of Kylemore Abbey, Galway

Kylemore Abbey is another heavyweight among Irish attractions. Its beauty comes mostly from the beautiful natural surrounding around it, however, it still shines through if see through a screen.

You can access this Irish virtual your here but make sure you click on the double arrow in the lower right corner: the interactive images of the nature surrounding the Abbey are simply wonderful.

Kylemore Abbey Connemara Irleland

Newgrange passage tomb, Co Meath, virtual tour

The Neolithic passage tomb of Newgrange is beautiful, unique, historically significant and one of the only 2 UNESCO world heritage sites in Ireland (the other one is Skellig Michaels).

Visiting Newgrange in real life is worth it but often hard, due to the high demand and the fact that only small groups can enter at any given time, however, visiting virtually is easy!

Have a look here: this virtual tour is great and a godsend if you want to visit Newgrange but suffer from claustrophobia!

Skelling Michael Virtual Tour, Co Kerry

Skelling Michael is one of the hardest places to access in Ireland, due to the moody waters that surround this rugged island and the slippery path leading up its ancient monastic settlement.

We haven’t been yet (you cannot go with kids) so this 360 interactive image is as close as we could get!

I hope you enjoyed this selection of the best virtual tours of Ireland you can enjoy from home. I will keep adding as I find more, save this post for later and come back to check what we found!

Safe travels to Ireland.

Getting to Ireland is a dream for many, but when that’s not possible, there are plenty of ways to see virtual tours of Ireland’s attractions from the comfort of your home, especially important these days when airline travel is restricted.

irelandonabudget.com

So, get your computer or your smartphone out right now and check out these 13 virtual tours of Ireland's attractions that will have you wishing you were there to enjoy them in person.

Table of Contents

Áras an Uachtaráin, Dublin

This is the official residence of the President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins and his wife, Sabina.

The house (pronounced “Awrus an Oochtharawn”) is located in Dublin’s Phoenix Park.

The house was built in 1751 but there have been many changes and additions made to it since then.

During the 18 th century, it was known as the Viceregal Lodge and was the home of the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, also known as the Viceroy.

irelandonabudget.com

In 1911, there was a major renovation made to the house for King George V and Queen Mary’s state visit.

When the Irish Free State was established in 1922, the office of the viceroy in Ireland was abolished.

The first president of Ireland, Douglas Hyde, was the first president to live there.

irelandonabudget.com

A virtual tour will take you through the main rooms of this grand house, including the entrance hall, the state drawing-room, the state reception room, and much more.

When you do get to visit Dublin , be sure to take a tour.

Áras an Uachtaráin is open every Saturday for free guided tours. Check the website for times.

Blarney Castle, Co. Cork

Virtual tours of Ireland's attractions include the lovely Blarney Castle, which is on every first-time visitor's list of places to see.

Most people are eager to visit the castle to kiss the Blarney stone. Legend says it will give those who do with the “gift of the gab.”

Many visitors are unaware of the history behind Blarney Castle.

irelandonabudget.com

A timber house was the first structure built on the property in the 10 th century, but there is little evidence of its existence today.

In 1210, a stone structure was built but was destroyed in 1446.

What you see today is the third castle to be built, this time by Dermot McCarthy, King of Munster.

The Blarney Castle virtual tour will take you to the castle’s extensive gardens, including the Poison Garden, which contains a number of poisonous plants from around the world.

The tour also takes you to the Rock Close, where magical creatures and fairies are said to exist. You’ll also see the Fern Garden, as well as the castle’s interior.

Chester Beatty Library, Dublin

This popular Dublin attraction is what the Lonely Planet Guide describes as “not just Ireland’s best small museum, but one of the best you’ll find anywhere in Europe.”

irelandonabudget.com

The museum’s extraordinary collection was gathered by the New York mining magnate and philanthropist Alfred Chester Beatty, who was an avid collector of European and Persian manuscripts, in addition to Chinese snuff bottles and Japanese netsuke.

There is so much more to see from Beatty’s rare finds when you visit the museum, but you can get a good idea of what’s there if you take the virtual tour .

You can explore the “Arts of the Book” exhibition on the first floor, the “Sacred Traditions” exhibition on the second floor, and more.

The Cliffs of Moher, Co. Clare

The Cliffs of Moher attract approximately 1.5 million tourists a year, which is no surprise given the area's natural beauty.

During the height of the season, it can get a little crowded, so if you’re looking for a quieter time to visit, spring and fall are always good options.

The cliffs are located in the Burren, which is part of a UNESCO Global Geopark.

At their highest point, the cliffs rise to about 390 feet (120 meters) from the Atlantic Ocean.

From there, you can see the Aran Islands in Co. Galway, as well as the Mamturks and Twelve Bins mountain ranges, also in Galway.

A prominent marker in the area is O’Brien’s Tower, which was built in 1835 by local man Sir Cornelius O’Brien.

Cork is Ireland’s second-largest city and while it is a great place to visit any time of year, you can get a snippet of what’s in store when you take the Pure Cork virtual tour below.

You’ll see snippets of the city, the fabulous Cork countryside, with the wild Atlantic Ocean hugging its coastline, as well as its award-winning food, not to mention the fun you can expect when you visit.

Dunluce Castle, Co. Antrim

Dunluce Castle located is located in an absolutely stunning place.

The virtual tour takes you across the narrow bridge leading to the atmospheric castle perched high on the Antrim clifftops.

Explore the inner sections of this ruined castle, including the Mansion House and what is left of the kitchen, part of which fell into the sea during a rather violent stormy night in 1639.

irelandonabudget.com

The castle was built around 1500 by the MacQuillen family but was seized by the powerful MacDonnell clan in the 1550s under the leadership of Sorley Boy MacDonnell.

During the 17 th century, a small town grew around the castle, but that is no longer evident.

When you visit Dunluce Castle, be sure to check out the findings of past archaeological digs, which revealed cobbled streets and the housing of local merchants.

The Giant’s Causeway, Co. Antrim

The iconic Giant’s Causeway, about 4.5 miles from Dunluce Castle, is on most people’s itinerary when they visit Northern Ireland.

Not surprising, given the beauty of the region and the unusual basalt columns that you’ll find there, the result of a volcanic eruption 60 million years ago.

The tops of the columns form stepping stones that lead from the foot of the cliffs right to the water’s edge.

Most of them are six-sided, although there are some with 4, 5,6, and 8 sides. The tallest is about 39 feet (12 meters) high.

Be sure to turn on the sound when taking the virtual tour of the Giant’s Causeway.

At the center of the exhibition are artifacts found at the museum’s excavations in Dublin, Ireland’s most important Viking site.

Other parts of this virtual exhibition include displays of church metalwork and other ecclesiastical material of the 11th and 12th centuries, which shows how Scandinavian features were absorbed into Irish culture, including art styles, in the later Viking Age.

It is best to view the virtual exhibition on full screen.

Are you curious about surfing on the Wild Atlantic Way ?

a surfer virtual tours of Ireland's attractions

Easkey , a small village in County Sligo, has, in recent years, attracted a growing number of international surfers who flock to the area for its powerful waves.

Even if you’re not a surfer, the beauty of the surrounding area is well worth checking out.

And while it may not be as well known as the other places mentioned in this blog post, I'm sure that you'll agree it should definitely be on the list of popular virtual tours of Ireland's attractions.

Here’s a clip that will whet your appetite for the thrilling sport.

Trinity College, Long Room of Old Library, Dublin

Ireland’s most famous ancient script, The Book of Kells, is housed in the Long Room of the Old Library at Trinity College, and, like the Cliffs of Moher, it also attracts millions of visitors per year.

There's no doubt it is also proving to be one of the popular virtual tours of Ireland's attractions on the Internet right now.

irelandonabudget.com

The 65-meter-long room was built between 1712 and 1732. It houses 200,000 of the library’s oldest books.

Initially, the Long Room had a flat ceiling, but because the library was running out of room to store books, its ceiling was expanded.

The Long Room holds one of the last remaining copies of the 1916 Proclamation of the Irish Republic.

You can also see the Brian Boru harp in the Long Room. It is the oldest of its kind in Ireland and is made from oak and willow.

  • 10 + Irish museums that have free virtual tours

You don’t have to physically visit Ireland to experience some of the heritage and cultural experiences that the country has to offer. Many Irish museums have “opened their doors” to the world by offering virtual tours of their physical spaces, allowing viewers to ‘walk’ through the corridors and experience the museums from their homes. Here you will find a selection of some of Ireland’s best-known museums and public spaces, all with something different to offer and all available to you to browse virtually, and for free.

Ten Irish Museums to visit virtually

1.  Chester Beatty

Described by Lonely Planet as ‘not just the best museum in Ireland but one of the best in Europe’, the Chester Beatty is the pre-eminent Irish museum promoting the appreciation and understanding of world cultures with holdings of manuscripts, rare books, and other treasures from Europe, the Middle East, North Africa and Asia. Once the private library of Sir Alfred Chester Beatty (1875 – 1968), a successful American mining engineer, collector and philanthropist, the Chester Beatty is also today a research library for scholars from all over the world.

2.  National Museum of Ireland - Natural History Building

The Natural History building was built in 1856 to house the Royal Dublin Society’s growing collections, which had expanded continually since the late eighteenth century.  The building and its displays reflect many aspects of the history and development of the collections. It was originally built as an extension to Leinster House, where the Royal Dublin Society was based for much of the 19th Century.

Specimens are laid out in two main areas of the building, the Irish Room on the ground floor and the World Collection on the upper floors. This virtual tour of the Natural History building includes two balconies that are currently closed to the public following a safety review.

Virtual tour of the women's pop-up museum.

The Pop-Up Museum showcasing 100 years of Women in Politics and Public Life  marks the centenary of the introduction of voting rights for women in Ireland. The exhibition’s first venue in 2018 was The Coach House at Dublin Castle and it was successfully adapted for new venues. The physical exhibition successfully toured across the country – to Limerick, Donegal, and Roscommon – with new items of local significance showcased at each location. The exhibition illuminated and celebrated the stories of very familiar and less well-known pioneering women, who have contributed significantly to Irish political life and public service.  Every one of these women contributed to our national story in so many ways, sometimes with little acknowledgment or appreciation within their lifetimes.

5 Sensational Virtual Tours Of Ireland That You Can Watch(Videos)

By: Author Irish Around The World

Posted on Last updated: November 6, 2020

Virtual tours of Ireland have become more and more popular since the pandemic began. With so many of us unable to visit a lot of these places, it is clear to see why.

But I’ve checked dozens of them myself, and I found that the effect of these virtual tours of Ireland wears off very quickly.

For example, I was looking at Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge 360 photo here but after a few minutes, I had lost interest.

It’s nice to see, but what I personally enjoy a lot more are back when things were normal. And people like in the videos below did a great job showing you exactly what life was like.

So rather than a virtual tour of Ireland that you have to click and click and basically look at pictures, I found a selection of tour videos of Ireland.

Virtual tour of Ireland including Dublin, West of Ireland and many more places

I have found 5 incredible virtual tours of Ireland. However, you argue that they are not technically virtual, but I enjoyed them none the less.

I suggest grabbing a nice cup of tea and maybe casting these videos on the big screen.

If you’re not subscribed to my weekly dose of Irish, you can sign up here.

Let’s get to the videos:

1. virtual tour of dingle, galway and the aran island’s .

My first find was the incredible West of Ireland. One of my favourite places in Ireland. This was filmed 6 years ago but still shows just how incredible the landscape is here.

If you get a chance next year, I highly recommend a visit. It is 26 minutes long and very entertaining:

2. Virtual tour of Ireland: My first visit to Ireland

Now don’t worry this isn’t one of those videos where the guy is overdramatic about how different Ireland is. It is actually a well put together a video which is just about to pass 1 million views.

It was also filmed or at least published a lot more recently in  May 2019 . It starts in Dublin, and he has actually marked every place that he visited in the video, which I found quite nice.

Yes, they are an American couple, but their humour and excellent editing will entertain you for the whole 42 minutes. Yes, this is a longer video, but they venture from streets of Dublin to the breathtaking Dingle Peninsula and beyond.

Really enjoyed this one. Plus great to see a recent video where people didn’t have to social distance.

3. Belfast and the Best of Northern Ireland – Another Rick Steves 1.4 million views

4. The Wild Atlantic A Way A Virtual Tour

I said I would mix things up for you with number 4. A great Australian perspective on Ireland. The Australia vloggers. Plus the guy does have the same first name as me which helps haha.

But no seriously this video was fantastic. They included some lovely stops such as Strandhill, The Silver Strand, Bunglass Point, Donegal, Downpatrick Head Sea Stack and Dublin.

5. Exploring Ireland With 60 Minutes Of Incredible Drone Footage

Earlier I posted this post which got great feedback, and I felt it would be a great fit in this article.

The footage is shot in stunning 4k quality and features some marvellous shots of Ireland.  A great clip to cast on the TV and let play in the background.

Which of these virtual tours of Ireland was your favourite?

Personally, I enjoyed video two “my first trip to Ireland” the best. But arguably they were all great.

If you had a personal fav comment below.

Thanks for stopping by and hope to see you again soon.

The 10 best virtual tours of Ireland you can go on right now

virtual tour to ireland

It's easy to let isolation get you down, but what if we told you that it doesn't have to be the case thanks to virtual tours?

Now don't get us wrong, we miss going out to places too, but the great thing about living in the age of technology is that you can visit some of Ireland's most stunning sites at the touch of a button.

Who knows? Maybe visiting one of these beautiful sites in virtual reality will renew your sense of wanderlust once the lockdown lifts!

National Gallery

Virtual tours Ireland

What better way to get your artwork fix then by visiting the National Gallery?

This tour allows you to visit multiple different sections of the Gallery, where you can see all the immaculately painted and sculpted works of art all from the leisure of your own home.

Now you can be a literal armchair critic!

Giant's Causeway

Virtual tours Ireland

The rocks formed at this site are so intriguingly unique, its no wonder there's been so many legends attributed to them.

This virtual tour offers a complete 360-degree view of this naturally beautiful site, so you can take in every little detail all from the comfort of your own home.

Blarney Castle And Gardens

virtual tour to ireland

You can now scour the historic castle and the beautiful Poison Garden (it's not as threatening as it sounds, don't worry!) in all its glory, as the tour displays the grounds in full detail.

Feel free to go down the trail from the Garden and wander into every chamber of the castle at your own pace.

We're not sure how you'd go about kissing the Blarney stone, though...

Cliffs of Moher

Virtual tours Ireland

One of Ireland's most famous attractions, there's a reason why it was chosen for major scenes in films like The Princess Bride and Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince.

Along with the stunning cliffs themselves, you can also tour the museum centre at the sight, with the dioramas offering information about the cliffs and wildlife that are lucky enough to call the cliffs their home.

Natural History Museum

Virtual tours Ireland

If you love history and animals, then you should definitely take this virtual tour!

The incredible amount of things on display is staggering, even slightly overwhelming at times, but thankfully the museum recognised this and as such spread out all the displays over four floors.

Your trek here will likely prove to be as priceless as the artefacts and animal bones that reside at this museum.

Dunluce Castle

virtual tour to ireland

This under-rated spot located in Co Antrim showcases the extremely photogenic Dunluce Castle and its surroundings.

Take a virtual tour through the sun-kissed bricks and mortars that make up the grounds of the castle, and even enjoy a beautiful sunset (we personally recommend doing this for the end of the tour to enhance the experience).

Guinness Storehouse

Virtual tours Ireland

There's a reason why Guinness has become known worldwide as one of Ireland's finest exports.

Don't worry if you're not familiar with the drink though, because by the time you're done navigating the various levels of the stunning storehouse, you'll be a Guinness connoisseur in no time!

Who else is suddenly in the mood for a creamy stout?

Áras an Uachtaráin

Virtual tours Ireland

Ever wanted to find out what it would be like to live as the President of the Emerald Isle? Well now you can.

Featuring exquisite architecture and paintings, you'll probably never want to leave the President's home once you enter into it on the virtual tour.

As an added bonus, one of Miggeldy's Bernese mountain dogs is there to greet you once you start the tour... it's just a shame it doesn't give you the option to virtually pet the adorable dog!

Waterford Medieval Museum

Virtual tours Ireland

Waterford has a complex history, especially during its medieval period, which you can learn about with this well-made virtual tour.

From the dimly-lit but atmospheric Chorister's Halls to the red and the vast array of artefacts within the dioramas, feel free to inspect every attraction as long as you like in crisp high-definition.

I COULD NOT IMAGINE A BETTER CHOICE "Although we weren't sure exactly what to expect, deciding to take this tour was the BEST decision. We weren't sure if we were going to get a pre-recorded video with voice over or what, but were absolutely delighted when we were greeted by our guide, David. Born, raised, educated and residing in Ireland, we enjoyed Ireland's castles through the lens of a real Irishman, steeped in the country's history and heritage. David brought Ireland to life with personal stories, anecdote and connections. It was if we were right there -- enjoying a Guinness with him. Fantastically knowledgeable, gracious and a true professional. Just wonderful!!!"   Wendy Canada:  Virtual Explorer   |   Book a virtual tour Now
Laura, Canada HIGHLIGHTS OFF THE BEATEN TRACK AREAS “I very much enjoyed my virtual tour. David, my guide was charming and informative. The interactive nature of this tour was so amazing.             What a great tour of some amazing and beautiful Irish castles! David gives some very interesting details about the origin and history of the castles, with video and pictures to go along with it, showing the inside and out. Beautiful shots of the landscapes and surrounding area of these amazing castles. We heard some great stories from David that give you the real sense of the history of Ireland, which he is very passionate about. He can tell you about anything you'd like to know throughout the tour - very knowledgeable and enthusiastic with all aspects. Would highly recommend taking this tour before visiting these places in real life. And highly recommend to have a bit of 'craic' with David and the Ireland Castles Virtual Tour!   Brodie:  USA Virtual Voyager   |   Book a virtual tour Now
Great tour! David is the consummate host. Very engaging and entertaining. Very knowledgeable and passionate about a very interesting topic. Graphics were great, the history of ancient Ireland is fascinating. Would highly recommend this tour and any others that David hosts.   Michael G Canada:  Virtual Wanderer   |   Book a virtual tour Now
We were meant to take a trip to Ireland this summer but had to cancel. We took three of David's tours this week to see some of the sights we would have seen (and will hopefully see next year!). We were able to see all sorts of photos, videos and explore Google Earth with David explaining live what we were seeing and the history of the sites! David was an enthusiastic and kind tour guide with lots of stories to share. He is very knowledgeable and clearly enjoys talking about Ireland and meeting new people - he makes you feel like an old friend! Thank you, David!   Jen & Natalie Canada:  Virtual Trippers   |   Book a virtual tour Now
