Skyline of Athens with Monastiraki square and Acropolis hill during sunset. Athens, Greece

CRUISE ITINERARY

Today you begin your journey as you board your Celebrity Cruise ship for departure. Athens brought the world drama, history, poetry, and philosophy. Once home to the world’s most powerful and civilized empires, Athens is now the world’s foremost archaeological playground.

The towering columns of the Parthenon still stand in homage to the virgin goddess Athena. The Parthenon sits atop the Athenian Acropolis and watches over the city where it can be seen from just about anywhere in Athens. Make it a point to visit the incredible Acropolis Museum on your cruise to Athens. The joint effort between two architects, one American and the other Greek, this outstanding building was completed and opened to the public in 2009. It focuses primarily on the Greek period dating to 5 B.C., considered to be the apex of art, culture, and philosophy in ancient Greece, but it also has artifacts from the Bronze, Roman, and Byzantine Ages. There is even a Plexiglas walkway from which an excavated section of an old Athenian neighborhood can be viewed.

In addition to an abundance of historical riches, modern Athens has plenty to offer—from scenic beaches to restaurants with superb Mediterranean cuisine and bustling central markets.

While at sea, take the time to recharge before the next adventure. Lounge by the pool, be spoiled at the spa, taste the delicacies or explore the venues on-board, until we arrive at the next amazing destination.

Rhodes, the friendliest city in the Mediterranean, is situated at the island’s northernmost point. This sunny retreat is also home to many historic sites, such as the ruins of the Temple of Venus and the medieval Street of Knights. Rhodes, pronounced ro-dos, is the largest of the Dodecanese Islands. The varied landscape with beaches, wooded areas, and ancient ruins also make this one of the most alluring of the Greek archipelago.

A cruise to Rhodes wouldn’t be complete without exploring the picturesque Old Town with its winding streets and Byzantine legacy. Enter the gateways of Rhodes and step back to a time when the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem built a Christendom stronghold. Or, tour the restored Palace of the Grand Masters and the Hospital of the Knights.

You can spend the day amid the chronicles of Greek history. Immerse yourself in the whitewashed romance of the archaeological site, Lindos, and climb to the ruins of its ancient Acropolis for sweeping views of the village and the blue seas beyond. The island’s vibrant shops, great restaurants, and glittering clubs buzz with a happy, modern energy in contrast to the grace of its ancient history.

Once the capital of the Roman province of Asia Minor, this coastal town is now an archeologist’s dream. The UNESCO World Heritage ruins of Ephesus impress even those familiar with the world’s other ancient cities. Though excavations have been underway for 150 years, only 20 percent of the city has been uncovered.

This former Greek banking and trading center is rich with historic sites, including the Great Theater, the Temple of Hadrian, and the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. On your Greek cruise, check out the Celsus Library — built in 117 A.D.— made up of towering columns highlighted by the statue of the goddess of wisdom.

Mykonos is known for its whitewashed villages sprinkled with blue and jade green. It’s also famous for its sophisticated nightlife. The most popular island in the Cyclades is bustling with activity, awash in beautiful alleyways, and home to alluring sandy beaches.

Here on the island of Santorini, you’ll find a classic Greek seascape—whitewashed houses accented by sea-blue roofs. This is a treasure trove for both professional and amateur archeology buffs, with sites that include tombs that date back to the 9th century and the sanctuary of Apollo.

In many ways, Santorini could be considered an explosive place, being that its terraced collection of homes and windmills lie on a caldera - a huge basin formed by an erupting volcano. The island’s volcanic past has also produced delicious grapes for excellent wines that are well worth investigating while on your Greek cruise. Some of the best on the island can be found in Pyrgos, Megalochori, and Oia.

Oia’s hilltop not only has the ancient, Minoan site of Akrotiri, but is quite possibly the best vantage point from which to witness the spectacular sunsets. And, if you have some time, take a short trip to the island of Nea Kameni for a dip in its famous hot springs. The warm dark waters are enriched with iron and manganese and considered therapeutic.

Tired of traffic and crowds? Hydra is just what you’re looking for. Cars, scooters, even bicycles are prohibited on this small, exquisite island in the Aegean Sea. Visitors get around on foot, on a donkey, or by water taxi. The picturesque town is filled with red-tiled houses, flower gardens, narrow cobblestone roadways, lovely gift shops, restaurants, and port-side tavernas—perfect for people-watching.

Hydra also has many beautiful beaches, some close to town, and some secluded. No wonder it’s considered one of the most romantic destinations in Greece.

Your ship returns to Athens and you disembark for your journey home.

Trinidad And Tobago Travel Guide

Looking for an in-depth Trinidad and Tobago travel guide ?

Then you’re in the right place!

Officially called The Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, this Caribbean nation consists of two islands:

Trinidad and Tobago.

Though the “sister islands” share many traits, they have their own distinct personalities and cultures. Two travelers could visit Trinidad and Tobago and have completely different experiences depending on where they decide to spend their trip!

If you’re looking for a relaxing Caribbean beach vacation , Tobago is the place to go.

Home to lush rainforests and surrounded by white sand beaches, you’ll be able to fully enjoy the country’s natural wonders on this island. Tobago is a diver’s paradise, with many reefs to explore and 45 registered dive sites like Bucco Reef . The culture of the island is also deeply influenced by African traditions, which you can savor through Tobago’s cuisine.

Trinidad, on the other hand, is home to most of the country’s major metropolitan areas and moves at a faster pace than its sister island.

Most cruises to Trinidad and Tobago dock in the nation’s capital, Port of Spain, where travelers can learn more about the country’s culture and history at the National Museum and Art Gallery as well as Trinity Cathedral.

If you’re looking to experience Carnival, Trinidad is also the place to go; the massive, colorful celebration happens every year in the days leading up to Ash Wednesday.

Street food lovers should also check out Trinidad, where you can find plenty of Indo-Caribbean goodies like roti and bake and shark at local Trinidad markets .

Trinidad And Tobago Travel Guide FAQ

Below, find answers to frequently asked questions about traveling Trinidad and Tobago .

Q: Why are Trinidad and Tobago called a twin island republic?

Trinidad and Tobago are known as a twin island republic due to the fact that the two islands are officially part of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.

Q: How do you travel from Trinidad to Tobago?

You can take a boat from Trinidad to Tobago via the Trinidad and Tobago Inter-Island Ferry Service.

Q: Is Trinidad and Tobago expensive?

Compared to other islands in the Caribbean, Trinidad and Tobago is one of the least expensive to visit. Budget travelers can expect to spend about $85-$100 per day, not including flights.

Q: What is the best time to visit Trinidad and Tobago?

The best time to visit Trinidad and Tobago is January through May, which is outside of the rainy season.

Q: What are the most exciting places to see in Trinidad and Tobago as a tourist?

You’ll definitely want to experience all the natural wonders Trinidad and Tobago have to offer on your trip. Birdwatchers will love Yerette , a sanctuary in St. Joseph, a town on Trinidad that’s home to 13 different species of colorful hummingbirds. Divers and snorkelers should head to Buccoo Reef off the coast of Tobago, the island’s largest and best-preserved coral reef. If you’re not feeling a swim, you can also experience the reef through a glass bottom boat tour.

History buffs should check out Fort King George in Scarborough for a glimpse at Trinidad and Tobago’s British colonial past. The fort’s location atop a hill will give you incredible views of the shore and the island’s mountains. While you’re there, head to the Tobago Museum to learn more about the island’s native history and see some Amerindian artifacts.

Of course no island vacation is complete without a trip to the beach! Tobago’s Pigeon Point is considered the country’s best with white sand and plenty of opportunities for water sports. Try stand-up paddleboarding in Tobago or windsurfing through the beach’s calm waters.

Q: Is Trinidad and Tobago dangerous for tourists?

There are a fair amount of things to watch out for when traveling to Trinidad and Tobago. Both violent crime and petty crime are common throughout the country, particularly in certain areas of the capital, Port of Spain. Try not to go out alone after dark and avoid secluded beaches, as these can be targets for robberies and assaults.

And of course, always be aware of your surroundings — as well as your belongings. Investing in pickpocket-proof clothing can help.

Home break-ins also occur in the country, particularly on the island of Tobago. If you are renting a home or villa, make sure it has a 24-hour security system and keep the contact information for local authorities handy.

Tourists are also frequently the targets of scams in Trinidad and Tobago. Be firm with street hawkers and vendors and do not take rides from anyone you don’t know, particularly at the airport. Also, be sure to inspect any ATMs before inserting your card, as ATM scams are common. And never ever give your pin number to a stranger!

Q: How does Tobago differ from Trinidad?

While Trinidad has more of an urban feel with bustling business hubs like Port of Spain, Tobago more closely resembles the typical laid-back Caribbean island.

On Tobago, you’ll find white sand beaches, resorts and water sports as well as more of an African influence on the culture and cuisine.

Thanks to its booming oil and natural gas industry, the island of Trinidad has become a big business destination. If you’re looking to explore the nation’s cities, this is the place to be.

Q: What are the cultures of Trinidad and Tobago?

The country’s colonial history has had a huge impact on its culture, with many diverse populations living among each other on the islands. The majority of Trinidadian residents are East Indian (Caribbeans of Indian or South Asian descent) or African and many others consider themselves mixed race.

As the country was a British colony for many years, English is the official language and is widely spoken on both islands. You’ll also see European, Creole and Spanish influences throughout the country, particularly in the cuisine.

Q: Do I need a visa to visit Trinidad and Tobago?

Visitors from the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom as well as many other countries do not need a visa to visit Trinidad and Tobago for less than 90 days. Other countries may require a visa to enter the islands.

It’s recommended to view your country’s Trinidad and Tobago International Travel Information page for the most up-to-date information on entry and exit requirements. You can also contact the Consulate General of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.

Q: Are credit cards accepted in Trinidad and Tobago?

Many large hotels and tourist operators accept credit cards, particularly MasterCard and Visa, though it’s recommended to carry some cash for making purchases from smaller restaurants and street stalls.

Q: What is the local currency in Trinidad and Tobago?

The local currency in Trinidad and Tobago is the Trinidad and Tobago dollar.

A labor of love: building the perfect island retreat.

Posted by Maike Prewett on August 31st, 2021

Categories: Meetings & Conventions , Where to Stay

Just a five-to-ten-minute boat ride from Crescent Harbor, Twin Islands Retreat might as well be a world away. With diverse meeting venues and a distraction-free setting, this all-inclusive island retreat is the perfect space for small meetings or business retreats.

When Merri and Larry bought the property in 2019, they knew it would be a labor of love – but for the husband-wife team, it also felt like destiny.

“I loved it immediately,” says Merri, “It just needed a nice bath, but I loved it.” In this case, ‘bath’ refers to extensive renovations, a fresh coat of paint, and a new dock, which was brought in on a 100-foot barge and then lifted into place via helicopter.

In addition to the changes, Merri and Larry also shipped in over 9,900 pounds of comfort and luxury items to get the lodge started – something that Merri still jokes about. “We used Alaska Marine Lines,” she says, “And my sister says AML stands for ‘Another Merri Laursen’ delivery.”

Almost two years later, the lodge looks unrecognizable; from the moment you step off the dock, you know that you’re in for something truly special.

Merri and Larry can rearrange rooms like the home gym to help realize your vision

Meeting Venues

Whether you’re hosting a small, intimate board meeting, organizing a multi-day workshop, or planning a weekend of team building activities, Twin Islands Retreat houses a variety of meeting venues with spaces that can be adapted to accommodate your vision.

One of these spaces is the recreation room, which features a collection of state-of-the-art workout equipment and a spacious home theater overlooking Sitka Sound. The main lodge, meanwhile, is a bright, open space, great for after-dinner socializing and creative, less formal work sessions.

With a sharp eye for beauty and detail, Merri is like a museum curator, playing expertly with colors, patterns, and texture. From whale bones to rescued oil paintings, every hand-chosen piece of decor has a story behind it.

Her magic touch is everywhere – except for the Alaska room, a private lounge branching off the main lodge.

This is Larry’s realm; as an avid hunter and outdoorsman, the Alaska room is a place to share his passions and give guests a rustic Alaskan experience. The room is decorated with animal mounts, big game furs, and unique additions like a vintage yacht seat and a large home bar. Guests can enjoy late night drinks in a sophisticated setting or hold a thoughtful discussion from the comfort of the leather chairs.

Relax on the deck and look for local wildlife

For smaller, more intimate meetings and one-on-one sessions, there are private nooks nestled throughout the lodge. On a sunny afternoon, attendees can lounge around the propane fire on couches that comfortably seat 8-10 people.

Dining and Accommodations

twin island travel

Merri’s gourmet cooking is a highlight for lodge guests

With room for a small, intimate number of guests, a stay at Twin Islands Retreat feels highly personalized; from plush bathrobes to sample platters of locally made snacks, Merri and Larry are determined to make guests feel special

As for Twin Islands Retreat’s tasty, gourmet meals, those are all cooked by Merri. On the day of my visit, lunch is a savory California roll the size of my dinner plate, made with locally caught Dungeness crab. Larry shows me a picture of the crabs, which he’d caught that morning, on his phone.

In the morning, guests wake up to the smell of fresh espresso and a filling breakfast like avocado toast with smoked salmon, poached eggs, and blueberry waffles. Merri’s fresh baked cookies are another highlight.

Activities

Twin Islands Retreat includes all of the amenities you’d expect from its name: a dry sauna, hot tub, and a recreation room to unwind in. Other features include a driving range overlooking the water, where golfers can practice their swing. Merri and Larry offer an extensive gear closet, with rain coats, water socks, and Xtratufs in all sizes. Guests can cruise around neighboring islands on kayaks or paddeboards, or chart a more ambitious course through Sitka Sound. There’s even a fire pit down by the water, and at low tide you can spot ravens, eagles, whales, and rainbows! In the sunlight, the beach glitters with abalone shells.

Here, golfers can practice their swing

Lodges in Sitka are often synonymous with saltwater fishing, and Twin Islands Retreat is no different. Whether you want to go on an afternoon trip or spend several days fishing, Merri and Larry will help you plan the Alaskan adventure of a lifetime.  They partner with various charters who can get you out on the water, and then Larry will process your fish at the lodge.

The personal touches at Twin Islands Retreat is what makes it so special. Merri and Larry go above and beyond to give their guests a personalized experience and make them feel special. It doesn’t matter if you have a small idea or a large, ambitious vision; these two will help customize a retreat that your attendees will never forget. Check out Merri’s Instagram at @twinislandssitka_retreat_lodge .

For more support with planning your event, check Visit Sitka’s Digital Meeting & Convention Planners’ Guide to access our resources.

Want to spend time in town? Merri and Larry provide a water taxi service for guests who want to go shopping or explore Sitka’s downtown attractions. In addition, the lodge provides airport pick up and return.

Trinidad and Tobago: 8 Things To Know About The Twin Island Republic

As Trinidad and Tobago prepares to celebrate their independence on August 31st, here are eight facts you may not have known.

Nasha Smith • Aug 27, 2021

twin island travel

You may recognize Trinidad and Tobago as the backdrop from the carnival scene in Jay-Z’s 2000 smash Big Pimpin’. The twin island republic is renowned for hosting the spectacular festival known as the biggest and greatest street party on earth. We’ve seen everyone from Ashanti to Lil’ Kim in these Trini streets.

Superstar rapper Nicki Minaj is Trinidadian-born, as is R&B singer Heather Headley and Tobagonian actor Winston Duke, known for his role as M’Baku in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film Black Panther.

It’s a real melting pot with diverse groups including Arawaks, Caribs, Indians, Asians, Spaniards, French, and Dutch. The country has the biggest celebration of Divali — the religious festival celebrated by the Hindu community — in the Western Hemisphere.

As the twin-isles prepare to celebrate their independence, here are eight facts you may not have known about Trinidad and Tobago.

1. Home of one of the world’s hottest peppers

https://www.instagram.com/p/BIa0lwpBEQI/

Back in 2011, Trinidad’s Moruga “Scorpion Butch” Pepper was branded the world’s hottest pepper by The Guinness Book of Records .

It has since been surpassed by Smokin Ed’s Carolina Reaper, but is still consistently ranked at number two in the world.

2. Home of the world’s largest deposit of asphalt

https://www.instagram.com/p/CL-QSMUBwoA/

The world’s largest natural deposit of asphalt is estimated to be spread across 100 acres and is 250 feet deep. It can be found at Pitch Lake, located in southwest Trinidad, in the village of La Brea.

It’s sometimes referred to as the eighth wonder of the world for its ability to replenish itself despite being plundered.

3. It's the world’s first country to declare a public holiday recognizing the abolition of slavery

https://www.instagram.com/p/CDWrJnPAFPK/

Trinidad and Tobago became the world’s first country to declare a public holiday to honor the abolition of slavery on August 1st, 1985. The country celebrates with a festival commemorating African culture at the Lidj Yasu Omowale Emancipation Village in Queens Park Savannah.

4. Limbo dancing originated here

https://www.instagram.com/p/BU2cDrIDuyF/

If you’ve ever found yourself wiggling under a stick approximately 8.5 inches above the ground, thank (or curse) Trinidad and Tobago.

The popular activity which favors the flexible was born from the island’s African heritage and has since been jazzed up by setting the stick on fire.

5. It's the birthplace of the steelpan

https://www.instagram.com/p/CS9tWxKAh-I/

Fashioned from oil drums, the Steelpan is considered the islands’ national instrument . It is the only acoustic musical instrument to be invented in the 20 th Century.

6. Home of the first Black Miss Universe

https://www.instagram.com/p/CCv2yBrJjmS/

In 1977, Miss Trinidad and Tobago Janelle Penny Commissiong became the first Black contestant to be crowned Miss Universe. A little over 20 years later in 1998, Wendy Fitzwilliam became the second Miss Universe in history from Trinidad and Tobago and also the third woman of African heritage to capture the crown.

7. Home of the first 100m Olympic Champ from the Caribbean

https://www.instagram.com/p/BzmL_pjF6Ym/

Before Usain Bolt, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, and  Elaine Thompson-Herah started dominating Olympic track and field events, Hasely Crawford broke barriers for the Caribbean.

Trinidad’s Crawford won the Olympic 100 m gold medal, becoming the first Caribbean national in history to do so.

8. It's your best chance to spot the Scarlet Ibis

https://www.instagram.com/p/CSrscfmhkSv/

The Scarlet Ibis is Trinidad and Tobago’s national bird. The gorgeous species known as the Eudocimus Ruber turns from brown to a vibrant shade of red when it matures.

The Scarlet Ibis can also be found in parts of South America, but the largest habitat resides in central Trinidad’s Caroni Swamp.

Where to Find the Northern Lights in Idaho

Table of contents, can you see the northern lights in idaho, when is the best time to see the northern lights in idaho, where can you see the northern lights in idaho.

Craig Goodwin worked in partnership with Visit Idaho to create this Travel Tip.

Seeing the northern lights is a bucket-list experience that leads many to take long journeys to Iceland and Alaska, but a trip to northern Idaho , along with persistence and a little luck, is all it takes to check that box off the list. Many don’t know that you can see the aurora so close to home, and even fewer realize that the dark skies and vast horizons of Idaho make it one of the best places for such an encounter.

While energy released from the sun can light up the Earth’s atmosphere at any time of year, getting the right conditions to see it can be a challenge. Here are some key insights to help find success on your own adventure to see the northern lights in Idaho.

The northern lights from Priest Lake in Idaho.

The biggest challenge is anticipating when the aurora will be active enough to see in Idaho. Scientists measure the intensity of the lights on a Kp index of geomagnetic activity, and there are dozens of forecast models that give anticipated Kp readings for a given day. The 27-day forecast by the Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska is a good place to start. The key is to look for a forecasted Kp of four or higher.

Just like a weather forecast, sometimes they get it wrong, and the lights don’t show up as anticipated. I’ve learned over the years that persistence pays off, and faithfully looking for the right conditions will lead to success. Seek out dark skies, free from the glow of city lights, and plan trips when there is no moonlight to compete with the aurora. The week before or after a new moon is ideal. Pay close attention to the weather to ensure cloud-free skies. The Clear Sky Chart website is a great source for this information.

I’ve also learned that even if the lights are a no-show, the worst outcome is spending a majestic night under the stars.

The northern lights over Priest Lake in Idaho.

If the lights are active, they will become visible around two hours after sunset. At first, they appear as a dull glow hovering on the horizon, but as it gets darker and eyes acclimate, there are visible columns of light that ebb and flow in the sky. As the aurora intensifies, it looks like the universe is doing the wave, a cosmic stadium of vertical light rays rising and falling in mysterious symmetry.

Unfortunately, the human eye cannot see the vibrant colors present in the lights, but a digital camera on a tripod picks them up with stunning clarity. Don’t be afraid to give it a try with a wide-angle lens of 24mm to 14mm, focus set to infinity, at f2.8 to f4, ISO 3200 and a shutter speed of 10 to 20 seconds. Photos can make an aurora encounter that much more memorable. The only problem is that this may further contribute to an unhealthy obsession with the next chance to see them.

In addition to following the tips above, the best time to see the northern lights in Idaho at their most spectacular is between September and March.

After years of stalking the lights, I’ve identified some ideal locations to consider for a northern Idaho aurora adventure.

The northern lights over Chatcolet Bridge in Idaho.

Heyburn State Park on Chatcolet Lake, near Plummer and St. Maries, has great views to the north, especially from the nearby Trail of the Coeur d’Alene’s bridge.

Another place where you can see the northern lights in Idaho is Schweitzer . The resort not only has mountain peaks with spectacular views, but they will also take you to the top of the ski lift in summer. After an evening of hiking the Selkirks and picking huckleberries, you can stick around for nature’s light show.

The northern lights over mountains at Schweitzer.

Moscow doesn’t have the mountain peaks of its northerly neighbors, but the rolling Palouse plains provide open vistas to the north. A simple night drive along U.S. 95 north of Moscow may be all that’s needed to witness a display of the aurora.

Priest Lake, in far-northern Idaho, has been my most reliable and rewarding location for viewing the northern lights. Hill’s Resort has a clear view, with sandy beaches and fire pits that make waiting for the aurora almost as enjoyable as the show itself. They are usually amenable to turning off the lights of the marina for night-sky enthusiasts. The nearby beach in front of the Priest Lake Museum is another good location where you can see the northern lights in Idaho.

A man sitting on the beach watching the northern lights at Hill’s Resort.

Wherever the quest for the lights takes you, make sure to be safe. Go in groups, especially if hiking at night, and bring headlamps, extra batteries, warm layers and bear spray.

Encounters with the aurora borealis can be astonishing in their beauty and mystery, and it’s understandable that people spend thousands and travel far and wide for the experience. Thankfully in Idaho, all it takes is a strategic road trip, some extra caffeine to stay awake and a little luck to have the night of a lifetime.

Ukraine-Russia war: Putin sets conditions for ceasefire - but Ukraine says it is 'complete sham'

Vladimir Putin has promised a ceasefire if Ukraine withdraws its troops from occupied regions, saying Russia would be ready for talks "tomorrow". But Ukraine has dismissed his remarks as a "complete sham", while the US has said Moscow is in "no position" to dictate.

Welcome back to our live coverage of the war in Ukraine.

World leaders are gathering in Switzerland today for the Ukraine peace summit, which Volodymyr Zelenskyy hopes will lay the groundwork for a peace process in his country.

World leaders including Rishi Sunak, French president Emmanuel Macron and US vice president Kamala Harris are among those taking part.

Russia is not invited and has said the event is meaningless without its inclusion, while some countries, including China, chose not to accept their invitations.

The Ukrainian president said the summit would involve "two days of active work with countries from all parts of the world, with different nations that are nonetheless united by a common goal".

Before we kick off our live updates, here's a reminder of the main news from the past day:

  • On the eve of the Ukraine peace summit, Vladimir Putin pledged to end the war in Ukraine if Kyiv agreed to drop its NATO ambitions and hand over the entirety of four regions Moscow claims to have annexed;
  • In the same briefing, the Russian president said the "selfishness and hypocrisy of Western countries" has led to a "dangerous turn of events", with Moscow "close to a point of no return";
  • Mr Zelenskyy responded to Mr Putin's peace proposal by drawing parallels to Adolf Hitler in the lead up to the Second World War and saying the Russian leader's words couldn't be trusted;
  • Meanwhile, prosecutors at the International Criminal Court said they were probing alleged Russian cyberattacks on Ukrainian civilian infrastructure as possible war crimes.

That brings an end to our coverage of the Ukraine war for this evening.

Scroll through the blog below to catch up on the day's developments.

EU ambassadors have agreed to formally begin accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova later this month.

The Belgian EU presidency said talks would start on 25 June.

According to the presidency, the decision should be given the nod by finance and economy ministers at a meeting next Friday.

The European Council decided to open accession negotiations with Ukraine in December last year.

Last week, the EU said both countries had met the criteria needed to start formal discussions, with Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal revealing his hope that talks would start this month.

Hot off the heels of his appearance at the G7 leaders' meeting in Italy, Volodymyr Zelenskyy has arrived in Switzerland for the Ukraine peace summit aimed at exploring ways of ending the war in his country.

World leaders including Rishi Sunak, French President Emmanuel Macron and US vice president Kamala Harris are set to join Mr Zelenskyy at the summit.

But it's expected to fall short of its aim to isolate Moscow, with China among a group of countries choosing not to attend.

G7 nations have reaffirmed their commitment to support Ukraine "for as long as it takes".

A final statement from the summit in Italy saw leaders affirm their plan to finance a $50bn loan for Kyiv using "extraordinary revenues" from frozen Russian assets.

They said the move sends an "unmistakable signal" to Vladimir Putin as the war rages on.

Volodydmyr Zelenskyy called the decision a" vital step forward in providing sustainable support for Ukraine in winning this war".

Mr Putin, meanwhile, has condemned the freezing of Russian assets as "theft" and has vowed it "will not go unpunished".

According to US and French officials, the money could be in Kyiv's hands before the end of the year.

Ukraine has attacked Russia's border region of Belogorod, killing five people, according to Russian officials.

Regional governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said two bodies were pulled from the rubble of an apartment block in Shebekino.

News agencies cited emergency services as saying a third body was later found, after the alleged shelling caused a stairwell to collapse.

Reports also said a driver was killed when a drone hit their car in a nearby village, while a woman was reportedly killed in her home as it was hit by rocket fire in the village of Oktyabrsky.

Sky News cannot independently verify the reports.

By Artem Lysak, Ukraine producer, and Deborah Haynes , security and defence editor

Ukrainian forces have struck a military airfield in Russia, targeting warplanes and glide-bomb facilities used to launch deadly attacks against Ukraine, a security source has revealed.

The source said the operation last night was part of a "sustained campaign to degrade the Russian Air Force" just as Ukraine has done with Russia's Black Sea Fleet.

Satellite imagery shared by the source purported to show two SU-34 fighter-bombers at the Morozovsk airbase in southern Russia as well as a white structure before the attack.

A second image is purported to show the aftermath, with both aircraft and the structure destroyed.

There has been no official confirmation about the strikes from Ukraine.

They came battered and worn by battles back home for a few days by the sea seeking sanctuary and solace in a wellness resort turned summit venue.

The G7 leaders will leave fortified by some surprisingly robust diplomatic progress but potentially terminal doubts remain for the alliance.

They have sent Russia a clear message. They may individually be on borrowed time as leaders but the West  has Ukraine's back for as long as it takes.

And China's been on the sharp end of some particularly proactive diplomacy too.

Two signature deals send billions more aid to Ukraine. The allies overcame stark differences between themselves to forge a creative deal that uses interest from frozen Russia banking assets to send fifty billion more dollars to Kyiv by the year's end.

In Moscow the Russians did not conceal their fury at the prospect of their money being used against them.

And a ten year bilateral security pact between America and Ukraine is another blow to Vladimir Putin. He started this war to deter the expansion of the western military alliance. Yet again it is having the opposite effect. The pact is a bridge to Ukraine joining NATO, even if that is many many years still away.

The G7 warned China in a number of ways. The final communique criticised its belligerence in the South China Sea and admonished Beijing for quietly helping Putin's war effort by trading dual use products that could help bolster his war effort.

But the composition of this summit was also a message for Beijing. The G7 invited pretty much the entire G20 here except for China.  If you want to be in the club they were saying, not very subtly, then stop conniving with Putin and play by our rules.

In Beijing that will be infuriating.

The leaders have seemed all the better for their spell in the sunshine, spirits lifted before going home to face the music.

But what they cant do is dispel doubts about their future and that of the alliance.

Security pacts tend to survive changes of administration, Ukraine will have its $50bn by year's end.

But what will the G7 look like when they next meet a year from now?

Donald Trump looks increasingly likely to win the US election and Joe Biden's performance here will have nothing to reassure the allies. He has seemed vacant and distracted at times, older than ever.

Trump has no time for multilateral organisations. That was made abundantly clear in his first term in office. In his transactional zero sum game world view they make no sense.

A year from now he could be six months into destroying NATO, deserting Ukraine and dismantling the G7.

First time round for all his puerile antics, he could do limited damage at these summits contained by the likes of Merkel and Macron both at the height of their powers.

Olaf Scholz is no Merkel and may be gone by then, joining Sunak, Kishida and Trudeau perhaps too heading for the history books.  Macron is on the way to being a lame duck president hamstrung by a far right national assembly if current polling is correct.

The alliance is in peril like never before, however successful they've been holding it together for now.

Earlier we reported comments by Volodymyr Zelenskyy that a ceasefire offer put forward by Vladimir Putin cannot be trusted.

In an interview with our Italian partner network Sky TG24 , Mr Zelenskyy warned the Russian president would not stop his offensive, even if Ukraine agreed to hand over the regions Russia claims to have annexed.

He also drew a comparison between Mr Putin and Adolf Hitler's Nazi policies of expansion before the Second World War, saying:  "It is the same thing that Hitler used to do... this is why we should not trust these messages."

Three Russian servicemen have reportedly died following an ammunition explosion in a Russian town about four miles north of the Ukraine border.

Shells from a thermobaric warhead, also called an aerosol bomb, exploded in Shebekino, as reported by the Russian Telegram channel Astra.

"Astra's sources in the region's emergency services reported that in the evening, ammunition from the Russian Solntsepyok MRLS thermobaric weapon system exploded in the suburb of Shebekino," the report said.

The cause of the explosion is unknown, but preliminary reports indicate it was "spontaneous".

Despite Astra's sources claiming three Russian servicemen died in the explosion, Shebekino's governor reported there were zero injuries .

Ten private households and one car were damaged, they said.
