Both of them are pretty lengthy so a great option would be to take one on your way to Las Vegas and the other one back.

The main route is primarily rural with few exceptions such as Denver and a couple of smaller towns. Fortunately, the drive is extremely scenic and features some unmissable Natural Parks (including Rocky Mountain, Valley of Fire and Zion State Parks) and last but not least The Grand Canyon.

Moreover, there are plenty of lush national forests, aesthetically appealing landscapes and beautiful sites scattered along the way for you to enjoy.

Our second route ("The Southern Route") features megalopolises St. Louis, Oklahoma City and Albuquerque - as well as plenty of detour options.

No matter how you choose to approach this amazing journey, we suggest that you spare three or four days for each leg, since both routes have a lot to offer.

How to drive from Chicago to Las Vegas

The map above shows our suggestions for the best road trip routes between Chicago and Las Vegas. Keep reading for detailed descriptions of both routes, where to stay on either, and the best things to do on the way.

Northern Route

While exiting Chicago hop on I-88 and drive towards Rochelle where you can detour to both Starved Rock and Matthiessen State Parks at La Salle. Back on the main route, drive westward through Davenport where you should switch to I-80, towards Des Moines.

Once you are there, a great way to spend a fun afternoon would be to visit Adventureland Park and Pappajohn Sculpture Park. Otherwise, continue driving until you reach Omaha where you wouldn't want to miss out on the giant desert dome at Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo.

Before you leave, you could make a quick detour to Kansas City or drive further west towards your final destination. Hop onto I-76 right before entering Denver, where we suggest you rest up for the night.

Get on to I-70 right after and consider detouring to Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests and Rocky Mountain National Park or continue driving through the beautiful mountain range into White River National Forest.

Follow the Interstate for a while, around Canyonlands National Park and Capitol Reef National Park and drive along further towards Fishlake National Forest. Once there, take I-15 and divert to Zion National Park or Red Cliffs National Conservation Area.

Right before you enter Las Vegas, a great option for a relaxing and picturesque detour would be to visit Valley of Fire State Park or Lake Mead National Recreation Area.

On departure from Chicago, take I-55 southward through Bloomington and Springfield towards St Louis. After taking a break in St. Louis, continue your journey on the I-44, around Mark Twain National Forest.

Drive through Tulsa into Oklahoma City where you can spend a whole day with ease before you jump on the infamous Route 66. You'll find plenty of attractions en route as you head west towards Albuquerque. The National Route 66 and Transportation Museum is one of our personal favorites.

Top 5 airlines serving from Las Vegas to Chicago

Inconsiderate staff, plane was very hot, poor decision-making from the crew.

Flight was delayed due to needing a replacement flight crew. Delta changed the aircraft type in Detroit. One hour delay. But once in the air, good flight

The fight was about 2 1/2 hours delayed, but that was weather related. The flight was also overbooked. But we were in Comfort plus so the flight was fine for us.

Meh. A late flight meant I missed my connections, and a 2pm LAX arrival turned into gettin in after midnight.

Flight was 3 hours late so only had an OK experience

It was very cold because the air conditioner was on high power, and my son got sick.

3 hours late and all they have is was a $12 meal voucher. That’s not even enough to cover fast food.

Among the poorest flights I’ve had with Delta in a while. Entertainment system failed completely on a 7.5 hr flight. Crew seemed distracted and not the normal friendly crew. Flight overbooked it seemed… very crowded.

If I can, I always fly Delta. I’ve found their service to always be reliable and pleasant.

You could have not cancelled the flight (AA, which I will be flying from now on) left for BOS despite the fictitious weather issues (that no one in my Boston family could see). You could have rebooked my direct flight to another direct flight instead of sending me though JFK, the worst US airport after O’Hara You could have rebooked me on a Main Cabin seat (like the one I paid for in my original ticket instead of putting me a the last row on JFK->BOS leg, pocketing the difference in ticket price But I do not really care whether you will ever do that in a future because in a future neither I nor anyone from my company (unless they pay out of pocket) nor an of my clients and partners (if they heed my advice) will ever be caught dead on any of Delta flights

It is a modern tragedy that any airline expects you to travel for 14 hours in such discomfort and that the only way to add comfort is exorbitant prices. I was in pain by the time we landed. Shameful.

After the morning frenzy of 35 min wait through CLT security at 4;30 AM, it was nice to have a smooth pleasant boarding experience. This 6:30 AM flight was not full. We were able to get seated swiftly and took off promptly. Nice touch they distributed the old fashioned headsets with 8 mm jacks. Snacks were decent and arrival was uneventful.

I had a great flight. Everything went smoothly and the flight arrived early.

The flight and boarding were easy peasy. I was traveling with my 4-year-old, so a smooth boarding experience was especially appreciated. My only piece of feedback is really about where our gate was in O'Hare. They've shoved four gates into a tiny corner of the B terminal and there isn't early enough room or seating for everyone. Not United's problem, but did dent the overall experience.

I was told we'd have a hot breakfast option in first class, so I chose not get a hot breakfast. It was a very strange meal, but the fresh fruit was very good quality. Service was excellent from ORD to ELP. No service from MBS to ORD, not even water. However, when flying American from FNT to ORD, which is a shorter flight, they at least pass out snacks and offer water.

The delays (5 hrs) were a comedy of errors, and the multiple safety issues encountered were very concerning.

The flight was delayed instead of leaving at 11 it left at 12.20

United WiFi is consistently unusable (it can take 10 mins to load a single web page). If you need Wifi to do work, be prepared to lose half a day of productivity.

Your app is impossible to use. I couldn't load it. Then i couldn't open it. When i finally got both those things done -with much help -then i couldn't open the app to install a credit card. The upshot was 4 flights without access to food or drink. When i first tried to download united app some company called starlier opened instead and i would up signing up for some 49 dollar a month music service which i still have not been able to cancel.

Good movies, iffy pay WiFi, food ok- on time though and that was great!

When you pay for Premium Economy on an 787 and you’re promised amenities for the extra money, you expect them to work. They didn’t. USB connector wouldn’t charge continuously. 120v outlet wouldn’t hold anything you plugged into it. The adapter would just fall out. The noise canceling headphones stopped noise cancelling in the first 15 minutes for EVERYONE. No one on the plane knew how to fix it so I couldn’t listen to any movies. I just put in my AirPods and went to sleep. Very unhappy with the crappy Panasonic entertainment system. I won’t buy premium again.

Our flight was delayed by 18 hours. Poor accommodations made and no apology.

This flight was awful all around. Delays on the tarmac at PHL before takeoff and at the tarmac in Chicago caused me to miss my final connection. This was completely avoidable, in my opinion.

Internet service was erratic. Crew service was poor and slow. My luggage on this non-stop flight was lost and not recovered

Flight attendant was incredible. Very efficient, friendly and pleasant. Patricia was one of the best I have ever seen. Please give her a big raise!

The CX617 from HK to BKK was delayed more than 1.5 hours.

All four American Airlines flights I took in last seven days were delayed. Caused me loads of problems, missed meetings, loss of time and money.

Too bad that first class seats do not recline significantly causing discomfort

This flight is frequently delayed. The connections seemingly are more frequently delayed. I’ve missed connections as a result twice on the same route to charlotte then Charleston. Final destination arrival has been the next day, twice in a row. No pilots, no crew. Too many excuses. Unfortunately, my days with American are over.

Entertainment was okay not because anything was wrong but it is a short flight so having no wifi is annoying but understandable. Crew was outstanding as usual

Could have TV/Movie and some water ou soda free

Flight was good and clean but delayed over an hour on the return flight.

We can’t predict circumstances like this ahead of time, but I give your staff a hats off for immediately giving us updated informations.

The boarding attendant was slightly rude when I asked about checking our stroller. Made me feel like I was bothering her.

Not much seat room, but that was unexpected. But the seat headrest was very uncomfortable.

what I like about Spirit is that the pilot and crew are good communicators. The plane itself - well, its a budget airline and you get what is expected, But I generally just feel safer, somehow, when I know more about what is going on - and Spirit has always done a good job of telling me what is going on: why the delay, why the turbulence, why this and that... and that means a lot to me.

There was a .79 discrepancy between the cost of the flight and what was paid. Spirit didn't let me obtain my boarding pass until the .79 (seventy nine cents) was paid. Contacting their customer service to resolve the issue was a nightmare that involved many wait minutes and two different departments. The price Kayak gave to Affirm, whom I used to pay for the tickets, and the price Spirit charged for the flight were off by the .79. I almost lost the ticket because of the hassle.

They sure know how to make you feel like you're packed into a sardine can. Most uncomfortable seat you imagine.

I flew from Las Vegas to Reno Nevada. Airfare was 60 $ round trip. I needed to bring my skis and boots.that was going to be $111 to bring them. Upon arrival they informed me that anyone who has skis more than 62 inches long is charged an oversize fee of $150 each way. Almost everyone over 5 foot five has skis over 62 inches long. So I paid $60 for the flight and $411 to bring my skis with me! WTF

The agent at the check in desk was absolutely rude. The rest of the team after that was good, but the check in process at LAS was miserable. The woman at the desk spoke like we were stupid and was rude throughout the process.

Four and a half hour delay in total. What frustrates me most is the poor communication and disorganization.

9 hours of delay!! Was not able to check my luggage that I paid for!!!

9hrs delay and didn’t provided anything until after flight landed $75 voucher for fiuture travel no meals or anything.

Flight was cancelled and I had to spend the night in the airport lugging my suitcase around

I liked getting off the plane. Everything else was well below standards. Not even offering a bag of peanuts for free for a 4 hours flight is ridiculous.

The whole experience was bad. Didn't know no complimentary drinks or snacks. $4.39 for a soda is ridiculous even a bottle water. A carry on was $74 just crazy. I don't think I will take this airline ever again. Very bad

Delayed...attendants checked every single bag and item for sizes before boarding.

4 hour delay because they used our aircraft to fly a different segment (per the captain)

Due to delay of our first flight, we almost missed the second flight. Workers were more agreeable, and baggage did not seem to be an issue.

I like the easy check-in and boarding process. I love the non stop flight

How to Travel From Chicago to Las Vegas by Train, Bus, Car, and Plane

trip to vegas from chicago

TripSavvy / Julie Bang

There are many ways to travel from Chicago to Las Vegas. If you’ve ever wanted to take a cross-country road trip that slices through Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Colorado, Utah, and Nevada (covering 1,747 miles), then this might be the exact adventure you’ve been yearning for.

Flying from one city to another is the quickest route, undoubtedly, and you’ll find that airfare prices are quite affordable. Driving is a great way to see a lot of our country in one big trip, and you can stop at several points of interest along the way as you make your way through six states. If you don’t have your own vehicle, you’ll have to consider the extra cost of renting one as well as paying for gas, which can get relatively expensive. Trains and buses are also readily available; however, it will take much longer to get from point A to point B, it’s not very cost-effective, and you’ll likely be less comfortable than if you traveled via air or a personal vehicle. Another option is to take a train part way and then fly part way. This combination might be a good option for those that want to shake it up and try a different mode of transportation or spend more time in some states but not others.

How to Get from Chicago to Las Vegas

Travelers can take the Amtrak , on a limited schedule, from Chicago Union Station to the Greyhound station in Las Vegas. You’ll have to be prepared for 77-hour travel time as it’s significantly more time consuming than other modes of transportation. Another option is to take the train to South Bend International Airport or Milwaukee Intermodal Station and then make arrangements to fly to Las Vegas from either location.

The biggest advantage of traveling via train is that you won’t have to worry about traffic or driving in inclement weather and if you’re traveling with a companion, you can mix and mingle instead of having to focus on the rules of the road.

Taking the bus is an option for traveling from one city to the next but it is also one of the modes of transportation that will take the longest as there are no direct routes. Traffic and weather are also considerations to factor into the equation as well as the fact that you’ll have to transfer in St. Louis, a third of the way through the trip. The price point is less expensive than the train, however, it is more expensive than flying.

The Greyhound bus station is located at the Chicago Amtrak Bus Station at Chicago Union Station, located at 225 S. Canal Street. The Las Vegas bus station can be found at 200 S. Main Street. The biggest advantage of taking the bus is that you won’t have to drive or navigate across the country and, if you’re afraid of flying or you just try to avoid it altogether, then this might be an ideal option for your needs.

Traveling by car is perfect for folks that enjoy a road trip. You can travel at your own pace, see the sites and attractions in each state as you drive through, and experience a vacation on your own terms. As you travel west on I-88, I-80, I-76, I-70, and I-15, you’ll pass through Des Moines, Omaha, and Denver. Las Vegas is two hours behind Chicago, operating on the Pacific Standard time zone.

You can expect to pay between $170 and $260 in gas and tolls and you’ll have to consider overnight accommodations, food, and entertainment costs. Parking in Las Vegas is also quite expensive at the hotels and limited in and around the touristy areas like the strip. Traveling during the off-season or shoulder season, however, might curb some of these costs.

There are several advantages to traveling via car. You can see a lot of the country by visiting each state, making the road trip an adventure that includes much more than Las Vegas. Driving is cheaper and more comfortable than taking the bus or train, however, you’ll have to factor in hotel prices, gas, tolls, and the like when making your decision.

Flights from Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) or Chicago Midway Airport (MDW) leave for Las Vegas, Nevada throughout the day, every day, serviced by: Southwest Airlines, United Airlines, American Airlines, Delta, Spirit Airlines, and Frontier Airlines. Allegiant Airlines also services Las Vegas, however, they only operate flights on Sundays, Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Southwest Airlines and Delta leave Chicago for Las Vegas hourly. Flights are just over four hours and range in price.

The biggest advantage of flying to Las Vegas from Chicago is that it’s the quickest, most affordable, and most comfortable mode of transportation between the cities. There are lots of options, frequent flight times, and, overall, it’s the easiest way to reach your destination.

What to See in Las Vegas

Las Vegas offers around-the-clock entertainment and, in fact, it’s easy to lose track of time in this city, especially if you hit the table games or slots. From big magic shows, like Penn and Teller, to live musical acts, to Cirque du Soleil, to comedy shows, there’s no shortage of amusing things to do in Las Vegas , whether you’re traveling with friends or your significant other.

Stay in a classic hotel, like the Bellagio, The Mirage Hotel & Casino, or MGM Grand Hotel & Casino; or travel the world with accommodations at New York-New York Hotel & Casino, Paris Las Vegas, or the Venetian Resort Las Vegas. After a late night of gambling, partying, or seeing a show, you can sleep in, order room service, and take a midday swim in the pool to recharge your batteries.

Of course, there’s much to do off the famous strip as well. Make sure you visit old Vegas and spend time downtown on Fremont Street (you can even zip-line here). See the retired signs at the outdoor Neon Museum . Hoover Dam and Lake Mead are also nearby.
