A car is probably the best way to explore France in total freedom. From motorways to departmental roads and country lanes, the French road network is very dense. However, traveling by car in France needs some requirements.

Documents for Driving in France

You may be asked to produce your documents at any time. Make sure that they are in order and readily available to avoid the risk of a police fine or even having your car taken away. You will need: * A valid full (not provisional) driving licence * A vehicle registration document (V5c) - the original not a copy, called "carte grise" (grey card) in France * A motor insurance certificate * Passport(s)

If the vehicle is not registered in your name, carry a letter from the registered owner giving you permission to drive.

When you are driving in France, a GB sticker needs to be clearly displayed on the back of your car - unless your car has 'Euro-plates' (number-plates that show a circle of 12 stars on a blue background).

What you need to take in your car when driving in France

• A warning triangle and a fluorescent safety vest . If your vehicle breaks down or is involved in an accident, you must give warning to approaching traffic. Drivers must position the warning triangle on the road surface immediately upon exiting the vehicle at a distance of at least 30 meters from it or from the obstacle in question.
• A breathalyser . Anyone failing to produce a breathalyser when requested will receive an on the spot fine of €11.The official announcement states that one unused, certified breathalyser must be produced showing the French certification mark NF. Carrying two single-use breathalysers will ensure that if one is used or damaged, you will still have a spare to produce.

Speed camera alerts

Devices capable of detecting speed cameras are forbidden when driving in France. This includes products or devices able to warn or inform of the location of speed cameras e.g. Satnav or GPS systems capable of showing speed camera sites as Points of Interest.

Speed limits

Unless otherwise signposted and on dry roads

• 130 km/h (80 mph) on toll motorways
• 110 km/h (68 mph) on dual carriageways and motorways without tolls
• 80 km/h (50 mph) on other roads
• 50 km/h (31 mph) in towns. Town name starts the limit, a bar through the town name is the derestriction sign

On wet roads

110 km/h (68 mph) on toll motorways

100 km/h (62 mph) on dual carriageways and motorways without tolls

On motorways in foggy conditions, when visibility is less than 50 m, the speed is limited at 50km/h (31 mph)

Driving in France with a caravan

• If the weight of the trailer exceeds that of the car, the speed limits are lower: 65 km/h (40 mph) if the excess is less than 30%, or 45km/h (28 mph) if the excess is more than 30%.

Please note

• During the first 3 years after passing your test, you must not exceed: 80 km/h (50 mph) on roads, 100 km/h (62 mph) on urban motorways and 110 km/h (68 mph) on motorways.
• On motorways there is a minimum speed limit of 80 km/h (50 mph) for vehicles travelling in the left lane (ie outside lane).

Minimum age for driving in France is 18 for a car and a motorcycle over 125cc and 15 for a motorcycle under 125cc. France has very strict drink driving laws. You are allowed a maximum of 0.5mg/ml of alcohol per litre in your blood , compared to 0.8mg/ml in the UK. Drivers who test positive for a substance classified as a narcotic face up to two years imprisonment and a €4,500 fine. During the first 3 years after passing your test, the limit is 0.2mg/ml, which means 0 unite of alcohol.

Alcohol penalties:

• 0.8mg/litre blood: you will have to go to court; maximum fine: 4.500€
• 0.5 and 0.8mg /litre blood: standard fine: 135€

Speeding penalties :

• 50km/h (31 mph): you will have to go to court; maximum fine: 1.500€
• 40km/h (25 mph): you will have to go to court; maximum fine: 750€
• 30km/h (19 mph): you will have to go to court; maximum fine: 135€

Mobile penalties

It is illegal to use a mobile phone behind the wheel, regardless of whether it is operated with a hands free kit. On-the-spot fines of up to €135 could be issued.

Driving in France with children

Children under 10 must be in the back seat and must use a proper restraint system appropriate to their weight, which means a child seat if they are between 9 to 15kg. Over this weight they can use a seat belt with a booster seat.

Driving in France requires adjusting the beam pattern to suit driving on the right so that the dipped beam doesn't dazzle oncoming drivers.

Motorcycles over 125cc must use dipped headlights during the day at all times.

• If driving in central Paris, an emissions quality sticker
• ► Driving licence. When driving in France, you will need a recognised full  and valid driving licence. An international licence (an IDP) is not required for short term visitors (up to 90 days) from countries of the EU, EEA, the UK (post Brexit) , USA, Canada; however it is either recommended or else required for visitors from other countries. For specific details, check with the local French embassy in your country of origin. NB: The  minimum age for driving in France is 18, so drivers under the age of 18 cannot drive in France, even if they have a full driving licence issued in their own country.

• For longer stays, standard EU driving licences remain valid, but holders of driver's licenses from non-EU countries will probably need to obtain a French licence. Again, check with the French embassy in your country before starting off on your trip.
• ► Proof of ownership , This is the car's registration certificate (for cars registered in the UK, the V5C certificate). If stopped by the police, you may well be asked for the "Carte grise" (grey card) : it is the vehicle's registration certificate that you are being asked to show.
• ► Proof of insurance . The standard international and European insurance document is the "Green Card", and drivers from  Europe (including the UK) should make sure that they have a Green Card from their insurer before entering France. UK insurers may provide this free, or may charge extra. Within the EU, standard vehicle insurance is valid throughout the Union, but only  provides basic insurance for your vehicle (third party cover) unless otherwise stated, whether or not a green card is provided. As regards the extent of you vehicle insurance cover, you should check with your insurance company before setting off for France or beyond. Many insurance policies that are comprehensive policies in the UK only provide third party cover when the vehicle is taken abroad.
•     Many UK motorists like to take out extra holiday insurance, such as that available from the AA, to cover the costs of emergency repairs and/or repatriation of the vehicle and passengers in the event of a major mishap. Click to visit the AA website .
• ► Headlamp beam deflector .  Depending on your car, you will either need deflector patches or have to adjust the beam manually. In the UK, headlamps dip to the left, which is a big problem when driving at night on the continent, as that means they dip into the path of oncoming traffic. Beam deflectors (often just a bit of opaque tape to stick on a part of the headlamp) correct this.
• ►  Spare set of bulbs .  Though it is highly unlikely that you will be stopped and asked to show your spare set of bulbs, and though it is not practical to carry spare sealed-beam units that require a garage visit for fitting, French rules of the road require cars to carry a spare set of bulbs. Many French drivers do not carry them.....
• ► Breathalyzer kit . or alcohol level test. In theory, it is obligatory to carry one of these - but there is no penalty for not having one.
• ► Hazard warning triangle .  All vehicles must carry a red reflective breakdown warning triangle that can be placed at a suitable distance behind a car if it is immobilised on the highway or hard shoulder
• ► Spare set of car keys .  Not obligatory, but highly recommended. After all, it would be unimaginable hassle to lose your keys, then have no way of getting into your car... or once in it, of starting it.

• ► Vehicle condition .  Don't set out on a long journey to France or beyond, to Italy or Spain or wherever, without having first had your car serviced or checked. In particular, check tyre pressure and condition.
• ► Maps or Satnav .  One or the other of these is always advisable, even if you are planning a simple journey on motorways or main roads. Detailed local maps can help you in the event of the unforeseen. They can also help drivers of larger vehicles - coaches, HGVs, caravans or motorhomes - avoid unsuitable roads before they actually reach them.  Satnavs are quite good at forgetting to mention bits of vital information, such as low bridges or narrow bridges on minor roads.
• ► Emissions quality sticker .  These are required for vehicles driving into many French cities during weekdays, or in some other  cities on poor air quality days (mostly in winter). I have carried out extensive research on this  European Travel Kit  and have posted my findings here. Personally I travel to France on a regular basis and have built up my own "kit" over the years. However if you are looking to drive in France and you don't know exactly what you need, and why, then this kit offers a great "one stop shop".

European Travel Kit, What It Contains

OK so it comes to you in one parcel and will easily store away in the car (or van) without any problem.

A universal pair of  Headlamp Beam Converters . These will fit any UK Make and Model of car or van from 1980 onwards and most of the ones before that date. These are suitable for standard halogen headlights and also the new style Xenon ones also. Full fitting instructions are supplied with them.

A universal  Spare Bulb & Fuse Kit , our kit contains  3 different headlight bulbs . It has a H1 (448), H4 (472), and a H7 (499), plus brake light, indicator, side light and rear light bulb and a selection of spare fuses. It is illegal to drive in France without these even if all your lights are in perfect working order.

A  Hazard Warning Triangle  - I really hope you will not need this but in the event of a breakdown or accident then this will prove invaluable. It's easy to put up and is very reflective, conforming to European Standard ECE R27.

Also within the European Travel Kit is a  Hi Visibility Vest  for the driver to wear (Ex-large fits all) in the event of getting out of the car on the hard shoulder etc. Do not stow these in the boot they must be in the car with you to be legal.

GB Plate  which is a stick on version, so don't worry about it blowing off with the wind or having it stolen off your car which is what often happens with the magnetic ones.

Breathalysers , you must have 2 in the vehicle at all times.

Headlamp converters and spare bulb kits

To ensure you don't dazzle oncoming traffic, you'll need headlamp converters . This is because headlights on British cars are designed for driving on the left, not the right. Headlamp converters reposition the angle of the beam, ensuring other drivers are safe as well as improving your visibility.

Budgeting wisely is essential for a successful trip. If you’re planning a road trip in France for 7 days, you should expect the following:

Car rental: €532 (about $568) on average for 7 days*

Mid-range double hotel room: €250 (about $266) on average per night in Paris* and €129 (about $137) on average in Marseille *.

Hostel: €124 (about $132) per night on average in Paris* and €53 (about $56) on average in Lyon*

Gas: approx. €75 (about $80) to cover 370 km (229 miles) based on a cost of €6.85 per gallon in May 2024, according to numbeo.com .

The budget for the 7-day road trip in the South of France suggested below is therefore around €1,510 (about $1,600) for two people (including the 7 nights in a double hotel room, car rental and gas), or roughly €750 ($800) per person.

For explorers considering doing a 2-week France road trip double these estimates. This way you can add more stops and explore even further! Adjustments, such as alternative accommodations or optimized itineraries, can also extend your adventure without adding too much to the budget. Want an extra long getaway? Consider booking a car rental for a month as prices are often decreasing when you book for a longer period.

How to get to France?

At the moment you can only get direct flights to Paris Charles de Gaulle or Nice Côte d’Azur from the US. Round trip flights from NYC to Paris cost on average $794 and you can count $1070 for a round trip flight from LAX to Paris.

If you are already in Europe you can also fly into Lyon, Marseille, Bordeaux, Nantes, or Strasbourg. From these airports, you can get your road trip rental car or take public transport to the starting point of your France road trip.

The right car for your France road trip

Choosing the right type of rental car for your France road trip is an important step. To zip between vineyards or across villages, a compact city car is enough. On the other hand, if traveling long stretches on the highway or for groups, a spacious sedan or SUV is essential.

Make sure your choice includes GPS, important for easy navigating from one point of interest to another.

A sunny road trip in the south of France

The scents of lavender, terraced vineyards, and the song of cicadas guide you on this road trip to the south of France, promising wonder and discovery at every turn.

Leave the hustle and bustle of the French capital behind to embrace the tranquility of the surrounding rural landscapes and rich heritage - all within a few hours' drive.

Just a short distance from Paris , Versailles dazzles with its incredible castle and impeccable gardens. Explore the royal apartments, lose yourself in a maze of groves, and admire the almost sparkling Hall of Mirrors.

For a lot of people, buying car insurance is like buying sliced bread. It’s not the most exciting purchase, and the options all seem similar. So thrifty shoppers might simply reach for the cheapest thing on the shelf. But like cheap bread, cheap car insurance may leave you wishing you spent a little more on quality.

“The cheapest is not always the best,” warns Jessica McNally, an agency owner with Goosehead Insurance in Dallas. That’s because there are lots of factors that make up a car insurance company. And while price is one of them, it’s best to look at the bigger picture.

Here’s what to look for when picking the best car insurance company.

1. Choose a financially stable company

The best car insurance companies have plenty of money on hand to pay for customers’ claims. It’s important to check an insurer’s financial stability before buying a policy, especially if it’s a smaller insurer you’ve never heard of.

There are several independent agencies that evaluate the financial strength of insurance companies. One example is A.M. Best. You can use its online search tool to find an insurer’s financial strength rating. Companies with a rating of A or higher are considered to have an excellent ability to pay out customer claims.

2. Check customer satisfaction ratings and reviews

Not every insurer is customer-first. That’s why it’s important to research the customer satisfaction of insurers you’re considering.

Or, if you don’t mind doing a little detective work, you can compare customer complaints against insurers by using the National Association of Insurance Commissioners’ website . But take other people’s emotionally charged comments about companies or agents you might read online with a grain of salt, McNally advises.

3. Look for convenience

A great auto insurer should offer multiple ways to manage a policy. For example, some insurers allow customers to use a mobile app to file and track claims. But it’s hard to tell how simple it’ll be to file a claim or perform other essential tasks, like paying your premium, before becoming a customer.

Some telltale signs that an insurer will be easy to work with are high mobile app ratings, flexible customer service hours and an easy-to-use website with helpful content. Consider asking a company representative to walk you through the claims process to learn what you’ll need to do if you have to file a claim. And pay attention to how the company communicates with you. "If they don't properly communicate, well, that's a warning sign," says Michael DeLong, a research and advocacy associate for the nonprofit Consumer Federation of America.

4. Pick an affordable company

It’s not hard to get car insurance quotes online from many companies. Make sure you compare the same coverage options throughout the quote-gathering process. And don’t forget to look for car insurance discounts, like breaks for being a good driver, paying your premium in full or driving a new car.

More tips to find the best car insurance

When shopping for the best car insurance, keep the following tips in mind.

Assess your needs. Before buying car insurance, take a moment to reflect on what’s important to you and your family. For example, maybe you prioritize affordability and a well-polished mobile app, but don’t need accident forgiveness .  

Consider small insurers. There are lots of small insurance companies you’ve probably never heard of. These regional insurers may provide lower rates and better customer service than the big companies you see advertised on TV.

Work with an independent agent. While it may be easy to get quotes yourself, independent car insurance agents and brokers can streamline the process. These experts vet companies and compile quotes from small and large insurers on your behalf. Independent agents and brokers can especially come in handy if you have a less-than-perfect driving record and can’t find insurance on your own.

Do your research. Search online for recent mentions of a company in the news before buying a policy, recommends DeLong. If you find a company has lots of recent lawsuits against it, you may want to think twice about signing on the dotted line. “And if they've had to pay out settlements, that's an even bigger red flag,” DeLong says.

Shop around once a year. Make a practice of shopping for car insurance every year — especially if price is important to you. Insurers adjust car insurance rates regularly, so what might have been the most affordable option last year may no longer be a bargain.

If you’re a car fanatic and you enjoy building things, chances are you’re also an avid model car kit hobbyist—or want to try your hand at the DIY craft. The cooler months are the perfect time to dive in as one model kit can span an entire cozy weekend indoors, no matter your level of expertise. Whether you’re into classics like the 1960s Ford Mustang or you want to build a miniature of the Ferrari 488 GTE, chances are there’s a kit to build a car you love.

What to Consider

Glue and paint.

If you’re a model kit newbie or looking to gift a model car, you can buy a die-cast kit with painted metal parts ready to assemble, or a plastic molded car that needs glue and paint.

If you enjoy tinkering and following directions to assemble things, a die-cast kit is the way to go. If you’re artistically inclined and skilled at detailed work with paint and decals, challenge yourself with a plastic molded kit. (I, unwisely, use my fingers to cut out plastic parts from die-cast kits. Don’t do that. They’ll break. Grab a pair of tweezers to pop out pieces instead.)

For kits that don’t come with supplies, make sure you purchase model-specific paints as they dry thinner than the type you’d put on a wall or a canvas. Vallejo makes great beginner-friendly model kit paints and Revell has affordable model kit paint brushes . For glue, something with a fine tip applicator is best. Tamiya makes a solid one.

You can also buy Lego building kits for adults and teens alike, which omit the need for glue or paint. Expect to shell out at least $100 if it’s car-specific—all car builds come from the pricier, more mature-leaning Lego Icons series.

Difficulty Level

Most retailers provide each kit’s complexity in a level or an age range, and some also list an estimated completion time. Most model kits are suitable for teens and up, but some children may be able to assemble tougher kits with adult supervision. Detail-oriented kits that require painting generally take the longest.

You should also take a look at the scale to see how big the finished product is—it’s listed in a ratio format that expresses the model’s size in relation to the real car it replicates. For parents, it’s a good idea to look at how small the pieces are to see if the project will be satisfying or frustrating for your little one.

How We Selected

Our selection includes die-cast and model car kits from reputable brands known for turning out high-quality products, such as AMT, Revell, and Tamiya, plus a few from Lego. These model car kids span all experience levels, from beginner to expert, and multiple price points. I've been toying with Gundam and Pokemon model kits for the last year or so, cutting and pushing plastic out of molds to piece together for display, so I know what goes into a high-quality kit. We used a combination of in-house expertise, research, buying guides from model kit and hobbyist publications, and user reviews to find the best model car kits.

1) 1967 Chevy Impala Model Car Kit

The 1967 Chevy Impala features Coke-bottle styling, with flared fenders and a narrow center. This model car kit captures every curve of the vintage muscle car and includes more than 100 parts, with chrome rims, rally wheels, a detailed interior and chassis, plus a 427-cubic-inch V8 engine. It also comes with a full-color decal sheet.

While most reviewers love this model kit, some say pieces are so thin that they are easily breakable. Still, with a gentle hand, this should be a simple build for older teens and adults.

2) Lamborghini Aventador Roadster Model Car Kit

This model car kit is an excellent choice for first-time builders, as there are only 24 pieces, and there’s no glue or paint required to finish the job.

All of the Lamborghini’s die-cast metal parts come painted and easily snap together or attach using an included tool. The end result is impressive and realistic—the doors open, and there’s a working steering wheel.

A few reviewers describe the instructions as hard to understand, but the majority say the kit is easy enough for kids, with one claiming their 8-year-old assembled it with no problem.

3) 2015 Ford GT Model Car Kit

In 1966, the first model of this car—the GT40 Mk II—famously beat Ferrari’s 330 P3 at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. (If you want the full story of the saga, check out the fictionalized version in Ford v Ferrari , starring Christian Bale and Matt Damon.)

Fast forward several decades to this slick car, unveiled at the 2015 North American International Auto Show. Tamiya’s model car kit does a stellar job replicating the 2015 Ford GT—this set doesn’t even skip the underside design.

There are also buttresses, door-side air tunnels, and head and tail lights with multiple pieces. Plus, it comes with a metal-plated wheel, an oil tank, and a complete set of decals, including optional racing stripes.

4) 1970s Dodge Challenger 2-in-1 Model Car Kit

Fun fact: The 1970 Dodge Challenger was the company’s first pony car—stylish, compact, and affordable. This two-in-one model kit allows you to build the factory stock version or the street machine (with dual four-barrel high-rise intake).

It features chrome-plated parts, including rims and bumpers, black vinyl tires, and a realistic detailed interior. The kit is for intermediate to experienced model car builders and comes with decals, but glue and paint is sold separately.

Many users say the part fit is excellent and more experienced builders will have a blast, though it’s not best for younger children.

5) Chevrolet Camaro Z28

This Chevy Camaro Z28 from the Lego Icons series is an excellent build for adults. It’s made of over 1,400 pieces and comes with a set of racing stripes so you can customize the appearance of your car with grey, white, or red accents. You can also choose which headlights the Camaro has.

Several users say this is one of their favorite Lego builds due to its extensive detail and fun, lengthy build process. One notes the interior of the car as a standout, with small details like an open comic book in the backseat and rear view mirror ornaments.

6) 1968 Volkswagen Beetle Model Car Kit

Volkswagon ended the Beetle’s production in 2019—more than 23 million cars were sold worldwide during its 70-plus-year run. But of all bugs that came off the assembly line, the 1968 Beetle is perhaps the most iconic.

This 1:24-scale model kit features a steering wheel that can be built on the left or right side, an opening front hood, and a detailed 1500-cc-rear-mounted engine. Chrome plates, black tires, waterslide decals, and a painting guide also come with it. Keep in mind that this kit requires model glue, though, sold separately.

Users love the model’s clean fitting parts, but some note it may be too challenging for its suggested age of 12 or older.

7) Ferrari 488 GTE Model Car Kit

Lego’s take on the iconic Ferrari 488 GTE has a ton of authentic features, including original race stickers and paint colors, a V8 engine with moving pistons, and interior details that are incredibly accurate. There’s also a functional steering wheel and two doors that open, plus front and rear suspension.

The 1,677-piece set is for experienced Lego builders, and although its scale isn’t listed, the model car is quite large at 19 inches long.

8) 1960s Ford Mustang Model Car Kit

Lego’s Ford Mustang model car kit has parts to customize your creation, including exhaust pipes, front chin and rear ducktail spoilers, and a nitrous oxide tank.

The mini 1960s muscle car has realistic details, such as white racing stripes and five-spoke rims, plus there’s a V8 engine, an air filter, hoses, and a battery under the front hood. The trunk and doors also open, and other highlights include a removable roof panel, a dashboard with radio, a gearshift on the console, and an operational steering wheel.

9) 1965 Chevy Stepside Pickup Model Car Kit

We had to include at least one bad*** truck in our roundup. This ’65 Chevy Stepside pickup kit gives you the option to build either a factory or custom model using the included stock and graphic decals.

There’s also a 283 V8 engine with optional parts, including disc brakes, and chrome wheels with moon hubcaps to pair with whitewall tires or five-spoke mag wheels with low-profile tires.

The model car kit has illustrated instructions and is ideal for intermediate-level builders and confident beginners.

A first-timer’s guide to using the Eurotunnel

In May 1994, the Eurotunnel – linking England and France under the English Channel – was opened in a ceremony led by French President François Mitterrand and Queen Elizabeth II. In the 30 years since then, the network, which shares its tunnel with the Eurostar service , has carried nearly 10 million passengers per year between England and mainland Europe. 

For drivers, Eurotunnel – now branding itself as LeShuttle – competes with the cross-Channel ferries by offering a journey time of just 35 minutes, in contrast to a 90-minute crossing on the fastest car ferry.

From tickets and terminals to queues and border crossings, here’s everything a first-time Eurotunnel user needs to know.

What is the Eurotunnel and where does it go?

The Eurotunnel, or LeShuttle, is a train that carries vehicles and travels under the English Channel, going between Folkestone in Kent , just off the M20, to Coquelles near Calais in France, on the A16 and near the A26. It serves vehicles only – no foot passengers are allowed on board.

How does it compare with the ferry?

Both services give the convenience of being able to take multiple passengers for the price of one vehicle, and to pack as much luggage as you can fit in the car. Both also allow pets on board.

LeShuttle’s claim to fame is the speed of the crossing. For people heading off on a long drive on the other side of the Channel, that shorter 35-minute journey can be worth the usually more expensive price point. However, if you’re hoping to hop out of your car during the ride to take a stroll or pick up some food, the Eurotunnel is not for you.

Where do I buy tickets?

Book tickets online in advance. You will need to provide “Advance Passenger Information” (API) – name, date of birth, passport details etc – online ahead of travel for everyone riding in your vehicle. 

How does it work?

Aim to arrive one to two hours ahead of your booked crossing time. Follow signs off the main roads and onto the Eurotunnel site. Lanes are clearly marked, guiding you to the check-in kiosks. Most kiosks are automatic, but signs will indicate which lanes have staff if you’d prefer to deal with a human. The system uses license plate recognition so, as you pull up at the barrier, your booking will appear on-screen.

Depending on the volume of traffic, you might be offered an earlier crossing time. You have the choice to accept it or stick with your booked train. Unless you’re particularly keen to hang around at the terminal, I recommend taking that gift. 

A letter or letter/number combo is assigned to your car and printed out on a piece of paper. Tear it at the top so that it’s shaped like a hanger and hang it from your rear-view mirror so that Eurotunnel staff can see it as you approach them. If your crossing is imminent, staff may wave you straight through, bypassing the terminals. If they don’t, park up and keep an eye on the large screens in the parking lot and within the terminal – they show when you’re likely to be called forward. 

Top tip: In Calais, don’t be surprised to be sent on a detour! You may find yourself following signs that appear to be taking you off site. This is a simply a way to manage traffic and you will be directed to check in as soon as possible.

What happens if I arrive late?

Usually, if you’re late you will be bumped onto the next available service, which might mean hanging around the terminal until the very end of the day. In some cases, you might be asked to buy a new ticket.

What’s in each terminus?

Don’t expect much. Both terminals have restrooms and water fountains, a couple of fast food restaurants and cafes, a newsagent and a relatively small duty-free shop. There’s a little play area for kids too.

What if I’m traveling with pets?

Traveling with animals requires a bit more planning. Anyone with cats, dogs or ferrets must stop and visit the Pet Reception . The animal must be microchipped and carry an Animal Health Certificate or EU Pet Passport, and dogs must have had tapeworm treatment in advance. There is a dedicated exercise area for dogs near the Pet Reception.

If you’re traveling with rabbits, rodents or reptiles, you must show a certificate that has been approved by a vet to border control.

When do passports get checked?

Once your assigned letter is called, drive on to passport control. Sometimes this is a very smooth process; other times, you might be waiting for hours, shuffling forward one car at a time. You pass through both the UK and French borders at this point – there are no further immigration checks upon arrival.

What about security checks?

Cars are randomly selected for security checks after passport control and you may be asked to pull over while an inspection takes place, including swabbing your steering wheel. 

How do you board the train?

Once passports and security are cleared, you are essentially in one massive queue waiting to board a train. You will be allocated a lane to wait in, and you could be sitting there a while. There are toilets here, a few vending machines and an information screen. When a train is ready to board (usually 25 minutes before its scheduled departure time), barriers rise at the front of the lanes and cars proceed from there.

Staff will indicate where on the train they want you to board depending on the size of your vehicle. The train has an upper level in places, so you will need to drive up a ramp to board the top deck. Follow the vehicle in front – you might drive through a lot of carriages – and keep on going until staff indicate you should stop. You will be directed to park up bumper to bumper, then asked to put on your handbrake and apply first gear, and leave your window halfway down.

Pro tip: The barriers can seem to open in a somewhat random order in the stacking area. As you see one lane departing, you might be tempted to sneak across. Don’t. Staff will stop you and send you back to the section you’re meant to be in.

What’s on the train?

Don't get your hopes up for a well-stocked dining car or a gift shop. Even a working toilet is a bit of a stretch on some crossings. Expect bare-bones carriages, with four to five vehicles in each section, and literally nothing else. 

Following departure, there are various safety announcements and a member of the train crew will pass through carriages scanning hangers. You’re free to move around outside your vehicle, but there’s really nowhere to go.

What happens on arrival?

As the train approaches its destination, you will be asked to return to your vehicle. Internal doors will open but don’t start your engine until the cars in front of you are on the move so you don’t pump the carriage full of exhaust fumes.
