travel spa treatment

Resetting your mental and physical health sometimes requires more than a 20-minute meditation session or a sweaty HIIT class. Making changes often means doing away with long-held habits and shifting your mindset — which is easier when you can step away from the daily grind and retreat to a place that supports your physical, psychological, or spiritual well-being.

That's where wellness retreats come into play. They're designed to aid in transformation through specialized amenities, expert staff, and atmospheric locales. From destination spas with innovative treatments to structured fitness programs, these 15 wellness resorts in the U.S. have it all.

Booking Tip

Some retreats include all spa treatments, meals, and wellness classes in the base fare, while others charge for these individually. Research what's included before you book to avoid any surprise fees.

Castle Hot Springs – Morristown, Arizona

Tucked into the red rock Bradshaw Mountains, Castle Hot Springs provides a true escape from the monotony of daily life. Once frequented by affluent families like the Rockefellers and the Vanderbilts, the oasis was closed to the public for more than 40 years before reopening in 2019 . Today, the luxurious retreat offers everything from sound bath sessions to scenic e-bike tours. You can relish in the resort's slow pace, soak in the geothermal mineral springs, nosh on farm-to-table fare, and enjoy spa treatments and yoga classes.

I stayed in a Spring Bungalow during my visit in March 2023 and was treated to an indoor-outdoor fireplace and a spring-fed tub. Castle Hot Springs is the perfect choice for a romantic getaway, with a renowned spa run by some of the best therapists and healers in the state, and plenty of adventure — including a via ferrata and a slot canyon hike.

Golden Door – San Marcos, California

This tranquil, Japanese-style resort sits on 600 mountainous acres in Southern California. Here, you can access more than 30 miles of private hiking trails, a bamboo forest, and about 80 rejuvenating classes each week. During your downtime, you can relax in the Japanese gardens, take a dip in the pool, or hike the mountain and meadow trails.

"Sensei can be a romantic retreat for couples, an intensely wellness-focused vacation, or a getaway for total pampering for both men and women. Amangiri – Canyon Point, Utah

Steve Jurvetson /Wikimedia Commons/CC BY 2.0

This vast Aman property spans almost 1,000 acres in Utah's section of the Colorado Plateau. And the majestic red rock surroundings set the scene for treatments influenced by both Asian and Navajo wellness traditions. Amangiri offers a Grounding Journey — a trio of spa treatments encouraging reconnection, stillness, and perspective — and Movement Journey — spa treatments mixed with movement sessions. At sunrise, join a yoga class on top of a rock formation with panoramic views of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument.

"I’m often asked which campus is better: the original, clean-lined, Brutalist wonderland of Amangiri (now approaching its 15th anniversary), or its secluded tented pavilion extension at Camp Sarika. My suggestion? Experience both," says T+L contributor Travis Levius . "Whether you arrive coupled, solo, or with friends, prepare to be mesmerized: It’s the only U.S. resort, in my opinion, that can truly be deemed 'otherworldly.'”

Crestone Mountain Zen Center – Crestone, Colorado

This Zen Buddhist monastery and retreat, located at the base of the towering Sangre de Cristo Mountains in Colorado, allows you to get away from it all and reset. You can create a personal program that fits your needs — from four nights to a three-month stay — and either enjoy the solitude or join group meditations. A stay at the remote Crestone Mountain Zen Center includes three simple, delicious daily meals that can be enjoyed privately or with other guests.

Getting your hands dirty nourishes the mind, while spa products made from locally grown herbs and flowers soothe the body.

"While guests can partake in dozens of activities ranging from archery to cooking demos, I opted to spend most of my time at the 40,000-square-foot spa, where my favorite amenity was the al fresco infinity pool overlooking the woods," says T+L contributor Lauren Dana Ellman of her recent trip to the resort with her husband. "Following a multicourse dinner, we'd end our nights roasting s'mores or stargazing by the lake — and yes, it was just as glorious as it sounds."

Sensei Porcupine Creek – Rancho Mirage, California

Guests can choose from several all-inclusive journeys ranging from three to 10 nights and spend their days indulging in sound baths, spa treatments, walking meditations, and bike rides on the 400-acre trail network. From city sanctuaries to desert retreats, these are the best luxury hotel spas for every type of traveler

St Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort Spa_Facebook

Editor's Note

The smell of lemongrass, the sound of cascading water and the feel of a fluffy bathrobe evoke instant warm fuzzies. For travelers stepping off a long-haul flight or just craving some rest and relaxation after a frenetic holiday season, a spa session is the antidote to whatever ails you.

As we begin 2024, wellness is undoubtedly front and center for many people. As such, there's no better time than now to plan a getaway that combines wanderlust and wellness.

With a spike in demand, hotel spas around the world are stepping up their treatment options, vying to give guests wholly and holistically unique experiences. Whether you're headed to the lush jungles of Bali or the majestic mountains of Bhutan , here are our spa picks for every type of traveler.

Best jungle spa: Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, Bali

travel spa treatment

Bali has become a reprieve for those seeking a dose of spirituality or looking to perfect their downward dog (thanks, Julia Roberts). In the heart of the island, beside Ubud's cascading rice terraces and the gentle flow of the Ayung River, is the Mandapa Spa.

Fringed by palm trees, jungle ferns and sounds of the rainforest, this Ritz-Carlton spa embraces the tranquility and ingredients of its jungle backdrop. It's a place where a Balinese healer can tend to your every ache and pain, though you can also opt for a traditional indulgence, such as a 24-karat gold age-defying facial or the Beras Kencur, a Balinese rice exfoliation.

How to book : Cash rates at Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve start at $1,157 or 100,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night.

Best overwater spa: The St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort

travel spa treatment

Designed to look like a spiny sea creature when viewed from a seaplane, The St. Regis Maldives ' Iridium Spa has stand-alone treatment rooms suspended above the turquoise water. Imagine a rainbow-hued parrotfish swimming into view as a pair of hands works out that kink in your left shoulder.

Aside from a menu of massages, facials, wraps and acupuncture that feature Biologique Recherche products, the spa's dedicated Ayurvedic specialist will keep your chakras aligned and you completely blissed out. Before or after your session, take a dip in the spa's Instagram-famous hydrotherapy infinity pool, one of the largest in the Maldives .

How to book : Cash rates at The St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort start around $1,663 or 82,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night.

Best desert spa: Miraval Arizona

travel spa treatment

There's a strong emphasis on the spa moniker of this Hyatt desert wellness retreat. Surrounded by arid mountainscapes and leafy palms, Miraval appears like a mirage in the Arizona desert.

Located just outside Tucson, this is where tech-obsessed professionals come for a digital detox designed to reprogram and recharge, so it's no surprise the resort's spa facilities and services are extensive. From the Prickly Pear Sugar Scrub to the Desert Sage Body Polish, you'll leave the desert feeling anything but dusty.

How to book : Cash rates at Miraval Arizona start at $1,506 per night, based on double occupancy, and include full board, some on-site activities, a $175 nightly resort credit per person and a shared airport shuttle. World of Hyatt members can book award nights from 57,500 points a night, based on double occupancy. Note that a 25% resort fee is added to the package rate.

Best city spa: Aman Venice

travel spa treatment

Venice, Italy's iconic Grand Canal is one of Europe's most spectacular sights — and is home to some incredible hotels. One of them, Aman Venice, is a romantic rococo work of art that's as bewilderingly beautiful as it is over the top.

There, a relaxed and understated spa with Asian inspiration and Italian charm is tucked away on the third floor. Using salt, clay and water from Italy's famous spa town, Salsomaggiore Terme, therapists perform a variety of services like the Tempio della Salute Thermal Mud Wrap and the Aman Venice Foot Treatment. It's the perfect way to end a 20,000-plus step day spent exploring the world's most famous sinking city.

How to book : Cash rates at Aman Venice start from $1,145 per night and extend way beyond during peak seasons.

Best mountain spa: Six Senses Paro, Bhutan

travel spa treatment

The Himalayan mountain peaks are not far from this Six Senses resort , where harmony and balance are key to life.

At the resort's spa, singing bowls and crystals are incorporated into the start of each session. A few standout treatments include the Wild Kashmir facial and the Memories of Bhutan ritual, which starts in the spa's private meditation room and ends on a plush massage table.

How to book : Cash rates at Six Senses Paro start at $1,740 per night for double occupancy. Keep in mind that IHG One Rewards points cannot be used to book a stay here.

Best spa for fitness: Equinox Hotel, New York

travel spa treatment

Since its inception in the '90s, Equinox and fitness have become synonymous. At the brand's first-ever hotel in New York's Hudson Yards , you can combine a world-class workout and spa session. Cool down in the cryotherapy chamber or sculpt your body even more with a silhouette shaper by Biologique Recherche.

These high-tech treatment options include wellness IV drips concocted to reduce inflammation and maximize hydration. This fitness-forward spa is designed to make you look as good as you feel.

How to book : Cash rates at the Equinox Hotel start at $745 per night.

Best cultural body treatments: Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti

travel spa treatment

At this remote Four Seasons property in Tanzania, giraffes and elephants have been known to wander past mid-treatment.

The open-air Kani Spa incorporates ancient rituals and ingredients like baobab seeds and a heated rungu, a wooden baton used by Masai warriors, into its sessions. Each treatment is tied to the savannah, like the Ubuntu, meaning "I am, because you are" in Zulu. This four-handed massage includes oils from indigenous plants harvested from nearby rural communities.

How to book : Cash rates at the Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti start around $1,880 per night and include full board and a daily game drive.

Best for families: Grand Wailea Maui, A Waldorf Astoria Resort

travel spa treatment

Hawaii isn't just for honeymooners — it's a family vacation haven.

Understanding Wellness Spa Retreats

In our fast-paced modern lives, wellness has emerged as a holistic approach to achieving optimal health and wellbeing. It encompasses not only physical fitness but also mental and emotional balance.

Wellness focuses on nurturing all aspects of our being, including our body, mind, and soul. It recognizes that true wellbeing results from harmony and synergy among these interconnected elements.

Spa retreats, in a nutshell, offer tranquillity and rejuvenation where we can escape the stress and demands of everyday life.

Like wellness retreats , these retreats provide an immersive experience that integrates wellness practices and therapeutic treatments into serene environments. They are designed to nurture and restore the body, uplift the spirit, and promote overall wellbeing.

relaxing with friends on lounge chairs

As we well know here at Wander—since it is our reason for being—wellness tourism has witnessed a remarkable surge in popularity as people seek meaningful and transformative travel experiences.

What is wellness tourism? The Global Wellness Institute defines wellness tourism as travel associated with the pursuit of maintaining or enhancing one’s personal wellbeing .

The desire for a break from routine, a chance to recharge, and a deeper connection with oneself has led to the huge growth in wellness-focused travel. Spa retreats are essential to this movement, offering a perfect blend of relaxation, self-care, stress relief, and personal growth.

Wellness spa retreats provide many benefits for physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing. They offer a sanctuary where individuals can disconnect from the noise of the outside world and reconnect with their inner selves.

 • Stress Reduction: Retreats provide an opportunity to escape the pressures of daily life, helping to reduce stress levels and promote relaxation.
 • Healing & Rejuvenation: Through a range of spa therapies, treatments, and holistic practices, retreats promote physical healing, rejuvenation, and restoration.
 • Self-Reflection & Personal Growth: Retreats offer an environment conducive to introspection, self-discovery, and personal growth. They provide a space for individuals to gain clarity, set intentions, and develop new perspectives.
 • Enhanced Wellbeing: By integrating wellness practices such as yoga, meditation, and mindfulness, retreats foster a sense of balance, harmony, and overall wellbeing.
 • Connection and Community: Spa retreats create a space for individuals to connect with like-minded people, fostering a sense of community, support, and shared experiences.

When selecting a wellness spa retreat, you need to consider your personal goals, preferences, and desired outcomes. Take these factors into consideration:

 • Retreat Focus: Different retreats cater to specific wellness aspects such as yoga, meditation, detoxification, or spiritual healing. Choose a retreat aligned with your interests and goals.
 • Retreat Duration: Retreats can range from a few days to several weeks. Consider the amount of time you can devote to your retreat experience.
 • Location and Setting: Determine whether you prefer a secluded natural setting, a coastal retreat, or an urban oasis.
 • Accommodation and Amenities: Assess the quality of accommodations, spa facilities, and additional amenities the retreat centre provides.
 • Budget: Consider your budgetary constraints and ensure the retreat is financially feasible.

By carefully considering these factors, you can find the perfect wellness spa retreat that aligns with your needs and aspirations, setting the stage for a truly transformative experience.

Now, let’s delve deeper into the essential elements that make up a wellness spa retreat with insights into the practices and experiences that contribute to a transformative journey.

Essential Elements of a Wellness Spa Retreat

At the core of many wellness spa retreats lies the practice of mindfulness and meditation . These ancient practices invite us to cultivate present-moment awareness, quiet the mind, and connect with our inner selves.

Retreats often offer guided meditation sessions, silent contemplation, and mindfulness exercises to help participants develop a deeper sense of inner peace, clarity, and self-awareness.

Yoga is a cornerstone of wellness spa retreats, combining physical movement, breathwork, and meditation. Retreat participants are introduced to various yoga styles, such as Hatha, Vinyasa, or Yin, allowing them to explore and deepen their practice.

Yoga sessions not only enhance flexibility, strength, and balance but also promote mental calmness, stress reduction, and mind-body connection.

One of the defining features of a wellness spa retreat is the array of therapeutic treatments available. Retreat participants can indulge in a wide range of spa therapies, such as massages, facials, body wraps, hydrotherapy, and aromatherapy.

These treatments aim to relax muscles, release tension, detoxify the body, improve circulation, and promote overall wellbeing.

Wellness Spa Retreat destination

Nutrition plays a vital role in wellness, and retreats often emphasize the importance of nourishing the body with wholesome, nutrient-rich foods. Participants are treated to delicious and nutritious meals, often prepared with locally sourced, organic ingredients.

Cooking workshops and nutrition education sessions may also be offered to inspire healthy eating habits and empower individuals to make mindful food choices.

Many wellness spa retreats are nestled in picturesque natural surroundings, offering opportunities for participants to immerse themselves in the healing power of nature.

Retreats often feature outdoor activities such as hiking, nature walks, forest bathing, or yoga sessions in scenic landscapes. These experiences allow individuals to connect with the natural world, recharge their energy, and deepen their sense of awe and appreciation for the Earth’s beauty.

Wellness spa retreats frequently offer workshops and educational sessions focused on personal development and holistic wellness. These workshops may cover topics such as stress management, self-care practices, mindful living, energy healing, or creative expression.

Participants have the opportunity to learn new skills, gain valuable insights, and explore different modalities for self-improvement.

Retreats often embrace holistic approaches to wellness that address the interconnectedness of the body, mind, and spirit.

This may include practices like acupuncture, energy healing, Ayurveda , sound therapy, or mindfulness-based stress reduction techniques. These holistic modalities aim to restore balance, activate the body’s natural healing abilities, and promote overall wellbeing.

By integrating these essential elements into the retreat experience, wellness spa retreats offer a comprehensive and transformative journey.

Participants are guided to embrace mindfulness, movement, nourishment, nature, personal development, and holistic practices, creating an environment that supports their wellbeing on multiple levels.

Designing Your Ideal Retreat Experience

Before embarking on your wellness spa retreat, it’s essential to prepare yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally. Start by setting clear intentions for your retreat experience and identify the goals you wish to achieve.

Take some time for self-reflection and self-care in the days leading up to your retreat, ensuring you arrive with an open mind and a receptive spirit.

Setting intentions and goals for your retreat experience allows you to focus your energy and make the most of your time. Reflect on what you hope to gain from the retreat, whether it’s deep relaxation, inner healing, personal growth, or cultivating a specific aspect of wellness.

Write down your intentions and revisit them throughout the retreat to stay aligned with your desired outcomes.

Many wellness spa retreats provide a structured daily schedule that includes various activities and treatments. Take the time to review the schedule and select activities that resonate with your interests and goals.

Balance relaxation with exploration, ensuring you have enough downtime to rest and integrate the experiences. Remember to be flexible and listen to your body’s needs.

travel spa treatment

Consider the type of accommodations that best suit your preferences and comfort level. Some retreats offer shared rooms or communal spaces for a more social experience, while others provide private rooms for those seeking solitude.

Research the retreat centre’s accommodations, amenities, and reviews to ensure they align with your needs for comfort, privacy, and relaxation.

Wellness spa retreats can vary in price, depending on factors such as location, duration, accommodations, and included activities. Establish a budget that suits your financial situation and research retreat options within that range.

Consider additional costs such as transportation, spa treatments, excursions, or optional activities. Plan and save accordingly to make your retreat experience stress-free.

Pack mindfully, considering the specific requirements and climate of your chosen retreat destination. Include comfortable clothing for yoga or movement sessions, swimwear, a journal for reflection , a reusable water bottle, and any personal items that contribute to your wellbeing. Don’t forget essentials like sunscreen, insect repellent, and any necessary medications.

Tips for Maximizing Your Retreat Experience

Make self-care a priority throughout your retreat. Take time to relax, unwind, and pamper yourself. Engage in activities that nourish your mind, body, and soul, such as taking soothing baths, enjoying quiet walks in nature, journaling, or practicing self-massage. Listen to your body’s needs and honour them with compassion and self-love.

Nature has a profound healing effect on our wellbeing. Take advantage of the natural surroundings during your retreat. Spend time outdoors, whether it’s walking through scenic landscapes, meditating by the ocean, or practicing yoga amidst the beauty of a forest. Connect with the elements and allow the healing energy of nature to rejuvenate your spirit.

Engage in practices that nurture both your mind and body. Attend yoga or movement sessions to cultivate physical wellbeing, release tension, and promote flexibility. Participate in meditation or mindfulness exercises to calm the mind and enhance self-awareness. Enjoy nourishing meals that support your body’s needs and savour the flavours mindfully.

Embrace the present moment and cultivate mindfulness throughout your retreat experience. Be fully present during activities, observe your thoughts and emotions without judgment, and practice gratitude for the transformative journey you’re on.

Engage in mindfulness practices such as walking meditations, mindful eating, or silent contemplation to deepen your connection with yourself and the retreat environment.

A wellness spa retreat is just the beginning of your wellness journey. As you near the end of your retreat, take time to reflect on the lessons learned and the practices you want to integrate into your daily life. Create a plan to sustain your newfound wellness by incorporating small, meaningful changes into your routine. This might include establishing a meditation practice, prioritizing self-care activities, or adopting healthier eating habits.

By following these tips, you can maximize your retreat experience, allowing for deep relaxation, personal growth, and transformative shifts in your overall wellbeing.

Here, we conclude our journey and remind you of the lifelong impact that wellness spa retreats can have on your wellbeing. The insights gained, and practices cultivated during your retreat can enrich your life long after the retreat has ended. You are so worth it.

All-Inclusive Resorts With the Best Spas

If you’re considering an all-inclusive getaway, then your main goal is probably just all-out relaxation. After all, all-inclusives typically deliver super-simplified versions of the vacation experience — ones where you’re not constantly breaking out your wallet, guide book, or Google Maps app. And if you really want to embrace the whole unwinding thing, make sure to work in some serious spa time. Most all-inclusive resorts have a perfunctory spa tucked away somewhere, but the hotels below feature temples of tranquility that are truly exceptional.

travel spa treatment

Grand Velas Riviera Maya

Playa del carmen - riviera maya, quintana roo, mexico.

The 89,000-square-foot spa at Grand Velas is one of the world’s top wellness centers (little wonder, since the hotel is among the Riviera Maya's most sophisticated properties). The Grand Velas Riviera Maya Spa features 40 treatment rooms -- some are for couples, some feature private whirlpools, and all have natural light -- as well as relaxation areas, a meditation room, and a beauty salon with services for brides. The spa's hydrotherapy circuit exceeds the typical sauna/steam room/whirlpool lineup. There are also sensation showers, ice and clay rooms, a cold plunge, and a warm pool with massage jets, waterfalls, and a pebble foot path. Service is as top-notch as the facilities, with a dedicated spa concierge, welcome drinks, and tea service after each treatment. Traditional Mexican, Maya, and Indian treatments are available, as well as fish manicures and pedicures.

travel spa treatment

Tetiaroa, Tahiti

A good amount of spa time is baked into the Brando experience -- one daily treatment is included in the rate -- so it's a good thing that the high-end, holistic Varua Spa is incredibly pampering and unforgettably beautiful. Tucked away in a cluster of coconut palms, the spa is a collection of architecturally unique huts surrounding a tranquil lagoon. Traditional taurumi massage treatments incorporate local monoï oil, while facials use Algotherm products. In addition to the cocoon-like spa suites, there's Fare Manu, a tree-house-style suite perched in the tree canopy, where guests can opt for couples treatments. The spa also has quiet spaces for relaxation, a steam bath, and a tea lounge.

travel spa treatment

Moon Palace Jamaica

Ocho rios, jamaica.

After undergoing a full renovation, Moon Palace reopened in 2015 as a high-end luxury resort that gives Vegas joints a run for their money in terms of scale, features, and extravagance. Its vast, 23-treatment-room Awe Spa actually warrants the name: It includes a ritzy, chandeliered pool room with submerged thermal beds and a circular ice room covered in mother-of-pearl mosaics that feels like an opulent, iridescent igloo. These luxurious spa features are in addition to the prerequisite steam, sauna, and relaxation areas.

travel spa treatment

Beloved Playa Mujeres

Playa mujeres cancun, quintana roo, mexico.

Located in the Playa Mujeres region just north of Cancun, the Beloved Playa Mujeres is a rare breed -- it's a true boutique hotel, with just 109 rooms and personalized service (from the cocktail and cool towel at check-in to the pillow menus in the rooms), but it's also a Cancun-area all-inclusive resort. One of its many highlights is its 35,000-square-foot spa with an ultra-impressive hydrotherapy circuit. The hour-long Aqua Viva circuit is included with treatments or can be purchased separately, and a staff member will guide you through the stations, which include steam rooms, hot and cold plunge pools, an ice glacier room, sensation showers, heated lounge beds, and more.

travel spa treatment

Round Hill Hotel and Villas

Hopewell, montego bay, jamaica.

Ever wondered how A-listers do spa days? Splurging for a treatment at Round Hill's beachfront spa complex is a good place to find out. Round Hill's spa isn't as extravagant or amenities-packed as some stunners on this list (see: picks one, three, and four), but, like the Brando, it wins big for its nature-immersed setting, devoted service, and serene atmosphere. The spa inhabits a colonial mansion with a large, grassy lawn -- dotted with padded lounge chairs, cabanas, hammocks, and a whirlpool -- spreading out to the turquoise water. Behind the house, a stone staircase winds through thicket, leading to a secluded outdoor hydrotherapy space surrounded by breadfruit trees, palms, and chenille plants. Even though the treatment rooms are inside, they don't completely separate guests from the beautiful outdoors, as each one has a balcony overlooking the pool, lawn, and sea. The resort’s fitness pavilion is located here, offering daily classes such as yoga and body sculpting.

travel spa treatment

BodyHoliday Saint Lucia

Cap estate, gros islet quarter, st. lucia.

It simply wouldn't do for one of the most luxurious resorts in St. Lucia to have run-of-the-mill spa facilities. No, at this secluded wellness retreat, the spa is a hilltop palace overlooking the Caribbean, with a daily list of special treatments such as acupuncture and Buqi healing (to remove negative chi). The enormous temple-like wellness center features a salon and more than 30 treatment rooms tucked away among artful reflecting pools, lush gardens, and enticing terraced spaces. Many of the spa treatments are covered by BodyHoliday's all-inclusive rates (as are seemingly endless activities, from archery to yoga).

travel spa treatment

Sugar Beach, A Viceroy Resort

Soufriere, soufriere quarter, st. lucia.

Like BodyHoliday, Sugar Beach is one of St. Lucia's top luxury resorts. But whereas BodyHoliday's spa is a seafront shrine, the spa here is a noise-free zone that blends into the trees. A long walkway made from stone and wood leads to the renowned Rainforest Spa, where seven treatment rooms are thatch-roofed treehouse huts (with private showers) immersed in the woods. Befitting of the natural environment, signature treatments are free of chemicals and incorporate ingredients like coconut, aloe vera, cocoa butter, and ingredients from nearby volcanic springs and plantations. Treatments include bamboo massages, hot rock therapies, facials, body wraps, salt scrubs, polishes, and holistic treatments. There are also a manicure and pedicure area, relaxation pavilion, and traditional steam dome. BodyHoliday and Sugar Beach's spas may be on opposite sides of the style spectrum, but they're equally incredible. Ultimately, the daily spa treatments that are part of BodyHoliday's all-inclusive rates give that spa the lead.

travel spa treatment

Miraval Arizona

Tucson, arizona, united states.

Miraval’s large spa has a modern, earth-toned Southwestern style that merges beautifully with the surrounding landscape. Treatments run the gamut from traditional massages, body scrubs, craniosacral work to shamanic and crystal-energy healing and Ayurvedic therapies, and treatment cabins with private outdoor enclosed showers are available. Throughout the resort are three pools, including a large lap pool with mountain views, hot tubs, and a pond with an acupressure stone walk.

travel spa treatment

Canyon Ranch in Tucson

This 70-acre all-inclusive is one of the country's top wellness resorts. Few spa resorts offer the range of services and experienced professionals found here, like fitness classes with yoga professionals and sessions with psychotherapists. Beyond Canyon Ranch's 80,000-square-foot spa complex (where dozens of spa treatments are available), there are plenty of spots to relax throughout the manicured property, included heated saline pools, hot tubs, and saunas. A few of the features incur an extra cost beyond the all-inclusive package, including the ropes course and climbing wall.

travel spa treatment

Lake Austin Spa Resort

Austin, texas, united states.

Lake Austin Spa Resort's spa, the LakeHouse, is one of the best-known and highest-regarded destination spas in the U.S. More than 100 salon/spa treatments -- including river-rock massages, oxygen facials, and Japanese energy work -- can take place in Zen-like indoor treatment rooms or outdoor treatment cabanas. Some options, like floating meditation, are performed in the spa's indoor Pool Barn. Separate men's and women's wet areas include hot tubs and saunas with views into a private rock garden. The spa embraces its lakeside location, with dockside lounge chairs, hammocks, and pergolas.

travel spa treatment

Le Blanc Spa Resort Cancun

Cancun, quintana roo, mexico.

Surprised to see a heart-of-the-Cancun-Hotel-Zone resort on this list? Trust us, we are too. But Le Blanc Spa Resort is the best adult-only luxury resort in town, with service, prices, and a spa to match. Spa treatments aren't cheap, but resort credits can be applied to their cost, and guests get free access to the hydrotherapy area, which has saunas, steam rooms, warm and cool pools, and hot tub. The decadent spa is located near Le Blanc's lagoon-side pool and yoga gazebo, and has 19 treatment rooms, including three suites with hydrotubs, five couples' rooms, and a Vichy Suite.

travel spa treatment

Zoetry Agua Punta Cana

Punta cana, dominican republic.

Oyster reporters have visited and photographed nearly 250 hotels in the D.R., so we can testify that the gorgeous spa at this 96-room luxury resort is one of the best in the country (the one at Sanctuary Cap Cana, below, also gets this distinction). Zoetry Agua guests have free access to the spa’s sauna, steam room, sensation showers, and large hydromassage pool with cascade showers and and an attached whirlpool, all housed in a serene palapa-roofed structure. A range of massages, from lymphatic to cranio-facial, dominates the treatment menu.

travel spa treatment

Sanctuary Cap Cana

If design were the primary factor in determining the best spas at all-inclusive, Sanctuary Cap Cana might just be at the top of this list. It occupies its own fortress-like crenellated structure, which guests enter via a wood-plank bridge crossing a shallow turquoise pool. The hydrotherapy area is stunning, with double-height ceilings, marble floors, modern glass chandeliers, and floor-to-ceiling windows partially covered by contemporary wooden screens. Its sensation showers are covered in shimmering peachy tiles that contrast beautifully with the pale lavender walls and greenish-blue of the two whirlpools. The area also includes a steam room and sauna, as well as a juice bar, beauty salon with bridal room, and a private interior courtyard with a half-moon pool and massage cabins. In all, it covers 2,000 square feet of space and, like Zoetry Agua, above, is one of the best in the country.

travel spa treatment

Couples Tower Isle

Tower isle, jamaica, jamaica.

The award-winning spa at Couple Tower Isle is easily one of the best spas on the island, and has an Art-Deco-meets-Zen style. It is housed in a stark white U-shaped structure supported by oversize columns, and there is a serene plunge pool crowned by a Buddha statue in its center. (We're not sure if anyone ever actually goes into this little pool, but it adds to the relaxing vibe.) There are also few lounge chairs with brightly colored umbrellas, a small juice bar, and a relaxation lounge. The spa includes a salon, which features hair, make-up, and nail services. In 2016, Couples debuted a new spa-inclusive room category at the Tower Isle location: Oasis Spa Villas come with unlimited spa treatments (a spa concierge will help guests arrange and book their spa itineraries) and dedicated on-call spa therapists, as well as private spa access.

travel spa treatment

Constance Moofushi

Moofushi island.

Fact: massages feel better when the Indian Ocean is flowing right beneath your pillow-cradled face. Constance Moofushi's U Spa by Constance is a modern overwater spa set on a wooden jetty. It doesn't have common features, like a sauna or a dedicated pool (don't worry, the resort's big sea-facing infinity pool is nearby), but its interior design earns it a mention. Individual treatment bungalows have cutout windows and plexiglass floor holes so guests can watch the movement of the water and creatures swimming by. (Tamara Spa at Lily Beach Resort in the South Ari Atoll has a similar setup.)

travel spa treatment

Secrets Maroma Beach Riviera Cancun

Playa maroma, quintana roo, mexico.

Despite being (another) massive Cancun resort, Secrets' has a spa -- with its natural stone walls, river-stone mosaics, and banks of candles -- that is a sure destination for romance and relaxation. Couples' treatment rooms include dual soaking tubs, and there are private outdoor cabanas right on the beach. A comprehensive treatment menu includes massages and hydrotherapy. Before and after treatments, guests can curl up on cushioned loungers underneath soft blankets.

travel spa treatment

Outrigger Maldives Maafushivaru Resort

Southern ari atoll.

A five-pearl resort located on a beautiful and verdant island in the Maldives is bound to have a superlative spa, and Maafushivaru doesn't disappoint. The boutique luxury resort in the South Ari Atoll has a large, overwater spa and sports pavilion, where guests can find a steam room, sauna, and outdoor deck with bubbling hot tub with panoramic views of the lagoon (free to use without an appointment). There are a few basic rooms for beauty and massage treatments, a small gym with modern equipment and large windows, and an open-air yoga pavilion off the back.

travel spa treatment

Marylanza Suites & Spa

Playa de las americas, arona, tenerife.

Marylanza's namesake feature -- its spa -- costs extra to enter, but it is exceptional. (It is open to the public, so the entrance fee helps keep the area up to the hotel's high standard.) It has a full water circuit, whose centerpiece is a warm hydromassage pool with a cold plunge in the center and underwater loungers in one corner. Circling the main spa pool are a hot tub, hot/cold foot bath, Roman bath, steam bath, sensation showers, and a cold-water bucket. A separate room houses the floatarium, a high-salt-content pool with warm water, mood lighting, and pool noodles (which aren't really necessary, but they make for nice neck supports). Like the spa, the fitness center is easily the best in the area. It has a Pilates center, yoga studio, and underwater cycling room, as well as aerobics, Zumba, and regular (non-hydro) spinning. Spa treatments include facials, mani/pedis, massages, Ayurveda, body wraps, waxing, and hairstyling. Hotel guests can purchase daily or weekly passes for the spa, gym, or both. For an all-inclusive resort with a spa on the beach in Playa de las Americas, check out H10 Conquistador.

travel spa treatment

Breathless Punta Cana Resort & Spa

The spa at the adult-only Breathless is truly, well, breathtaking. It mostly refrains from typical Zen-inspired spa design and instead embraces a bold, bright, industrial look. Unsurprisingly, treatments cost extra, but they come with access to a complete hydrotherapy circuit: hydropool, plunge pool, hot tub, steams, and saunas. Treatment rooms are large, high-tech, and have their own rainfall showers. The adjacent, light-filled fitness center is open to all guests.

An Iconic Cocktail Inspires This New Orleans Spa Treatment

spa

Having just opened in April, The Spa at Four Seasons Hotel New Orleans has already become a mainstay in the city thanks to its unique treatments, such as The Southern Gentleman. This experience was inspired by New Orleans’ iconic cocktail, the Sazerac, and is a massage that targets key zones where men often carry tension. To make a day of it, the Overwater Wonder experience begins with a guided hike by the resort’s in-house naturalist. Afterward, you’ll pick out your own seafood at the dock with the executive chef and then head to the spa for a signature spa therapy. Later in the day, enjoy a guide snorkeling experience followed by another spa treatment such as an aloe body wrap or foot ritual. Finally, end the day with a sunset cocktail and a private dinner enjoying your catch of the day from the morning dock excursion.

A Sensory Depravation Float Pod In The Maldives

This year, check this beautiful part of the world off of your list with a visit to Patina Maldives, Fari Islands . The pod is a sensory deprivation therapy where water is heated to skin temperature and statured with Epsom slat to give buoyancy and a floating sensation. Dream Scapes uses sounds, music, entertainment, and guided imagery to relax the floater.

How to enjoy spas if you’re not a spa person

If you have trouble relaxing at a spa, you’re not alone.

A dozen-or-so years ago, a friend gifted me a treatment at the spa of a ritzy country club in Thailand. It was promised to be the pinnacle of relaxation: 90 minutes of muscle-kneading, my limbs lathered in aromatherapeutic oil and my back covered in flimsy patches of 24-karat gold that would supposedly do wonders to my skin.

Little did my friend know that this was the first time I had stepped foot into a spa.

As I lay facedown on the massage table, a soft-spoken therapist pulled and stretched my limbs into every direction. All I could think was: “When is this over?”

I’ve never been a “spa person.” As a luxury travel journalist, I’ve had numerous opportunities to enjoy world-class spa treatments on my employer’s dime. But more often than not, I’d pass — often to much ridicule. The idea of having a complete stranger touch me all over my half-naked body never enticed me. The pressure to relax actually stressed me out.

Although plenty of people happily pay top dollar for Ayurvedic rubdowns and herbal body wraps, many others shudder at the thought of a full-body massage. Their reasons could range from insecurities about one’s body (and a fear of being judged by the therapist) to an aversion to being touched, or the sense of losing control in a situation that’s intended to be relaxing.

Over the years, though, I’ve learned to appreciate the occasional massage. Through trial and error, I’ve learned about the types of treatments I enjoy, and the ones I should avoid. And by being upfront about a massage therapist’s dos and don’ts during the pretreatment chat, I’ve learned to discuss boundaries and find focus points that allow me to (somewhat) relax.

These tips from experts can make a trip to the spa less intimidating for nervous visitors like me.

Talk during the take-in

Any spa or massage center worth their salt will start each treatment with a consultation session. Although these chats are mostly designed to discuss your problem areas (shoulder aches, stiff neck, etc.) and preferences for a therapist (male or female), they’re also the perfect moment to get to know your masseuse better. Starting off with some informal chitchat will allow both of you to loosen up and cut through the tension that might linger in a treatment room.

These sessions are the opportunity to voice your concerns and boundaries. If you’d like your therapist to avoid touching certain body parts (whether that’s your belly, scalp, or nether regions), this is your time to tell them. Similarly, if you’re unsure about the spa’s clothing protocols or want to know exactly what to expect during a treatment, ask away.

The end of a consultation session also doesn’t mean the conversation should be over. If small talk on the massage table helps you relax, it’s perfectly acceptable to babble away.

If nerves do get the best of you, and speaking up before or during a treatment feels daunting, know that you’re in good hands. Professional therapists will be able to listen to you, even if you can’t find the right words.

“We train our therapists on the importance of soft skills during a treatment session,” says Sirirat Chaikhampha, Director of the Chiva-Som Academy , a wellness training facility in Bangkok. “Not every guest feels comfortable with voicing their concerns or needs, so our therapists are trained to pick up on nonverbal cues or body language. It’s a therapist’s job to create an environment that takes away stress factors.”

Choose a light (or no) touch

Not every massage is created equal. Although some are literally very hands-on, there are plenty of options on the spa menu that allow you to relax with minimal touch or nudity.

“There are several spa treatments that focus more on relaxation and rejuvenation without requiring physical contact,” says Brooke Riley, a licensed massage therapist and corporate training specialist for Massage Heights . “Touchless therapy, such as sound therapy, aromatherapy and infrared saunas, are a great way to introduce a person to the spa environment and allow them to become more comfortable.”

Once that first session has been a success, Riley suggests trying a facial treatment. “It’s another way to slowly introduce a person to touch without having them undress and feel vulnerable,” she says.

If you’re touch-averse, “avoid treatments labeled Four-Handed or similar, which involve two therapists working on a guest simultaneously,” says Melissa Wilson, director of training and education at Woodhouse Spas. “Body treatments involving scrubs or mud application may also feel overwhelming if you’re a bit shy around spa services.”

(Un) clothing is optional

Although it’s customary to undress for most spa treatments that focus on the whole body, you rarely have to strip down to your birthday suit. Disposable underwear, provided at almost every spa, does a reasonable job at protecting your modesty, even if you’re not wearing a bathrobe. It’s often also no problem to keep your own underwear or bra on during a treatment; just let the therapist know.

“Well-trained therapists are equipped with techniques and protocols that ensure they’ll rarely have to see a client fully nude,” says Lorela Movileanu, spa manager at Armathwaite Hall in England’s Lake District. “For example, when rolling over on the massage table, the therapist will hold up a towel to give the guest more privacy.”

Similarly, therapists will leave the room when you’re changing clothes, and will only return when you’re covered up in a bathrobe. During most massages, therapists use draped towels to make sure that no intimate body parts are exposed.

Still uncomfortable with stripping down? Most spas offer treatments that don’t require disrobing. During Thai massages and Shiatsu therapy, you can remain fully covered in loose, comfortable clothes (sometimes, a loosefitting pajama is provided).

Treatments that focus on a certain body part, such as the feet or neck, also allow you to keep most of your clothes on. If you voice your unease during the consultation, many experienced therapists will even be able to adapt traditional body massages so you can remain fully or partly clothed.

Remember, the spa is a judgment-free zone

Like doctors and nurses, spa therapists see and touch dozens of bodies of different shapes, sizes and ages every week. Yours will already be forgotten by the time the treatment is over.

“We look at our clients’ bodies as organisms and think about the different systems within that organism, such as the muscular and skeletal systems and how we can address any problems,” says Amanda Strowbridge, who is based in the U.K. and has worked as a massage therapist for more than 35 years. “If I’m working on someone’s back, I’m only thinking about their back, the tightness of muscles and where I need to work them”

Besides, she says, therapists have a strict code of ethics, so no professional would ever discuss their clients outside work.

Above all, communication is key. Remember that you’re paying for a service that includes making you feel at ease. “The key is to be honest about your comfort level,” says Wilson. “Trust that the spa concierge and your therapist will steer you in the right direction.”

Dave Stamboulis

"Spa-cations": the new normal

As the world continues to recover from more than a year of lockdowns, relaxing and rejuvenating escapes are going to be at the top of the wish list for most travelers. In addition to heading out to pampering stays in exotic places, why not make your next trip all about a self-care and healing wellness journey with a unique back-to-nature experience?

Here are some worldwide locations offering element-based (earth, water, fire, and wood) spa-cations that will refresh, revitalize and get you back in the mood for some international travel – whenever you feel comfortable with getting back out there.

Huvafen Fushi - Maldives

Underwater wellness at the Huvafen Fushi, Maldives

Heading the list in unique spa locales is the Huvafen Fushi in the Maldives. The Huvafen is home to the world's first and only underwater spa, where reef-facing treatment rooms are set 30 feet under the sea. Therapists here have all trained with acclaimed massage expert Beata Aleksandrowicz, creator of the Pure Massage Spa Training Method.

Over-the-water bungalows and pavilions with plunge pools guarantee you'll drift off into another world, and the secluded hideaway on North Male Atoll is as romantic as it gets.

Elite Springs Villas - Anxi, China

Find your inner Zen at Elite Springs Villas

Hot springs have long been savored for their healing properties, and a good hot soak will make a believer of even the most hardened traditional wellness skeptic. In Anxi, China, the Elite Springs Villas feature private luxury villas that each have their own hot spring pool.

The thermal mineral water here taken from beneath the mountains is noted for helping with rheumatism and arthritis, as well as for moisturizing the skin and delaying aging. The beautiful tea terraces of southern China are a backdrop and serve to enhance this Zen-like retreat.

137 Pillars Suites - Bangkok, Thailand

Hot stone magic, 137 Pillars

For a novel treatment using the element of fire, 137 Pillars Suites in Bangkok, Thailand offers a hot stone massage using heated volcanic stones placed on trigger points to penetrate the muscles and relax tension. At the swank property's Nitra Serenity Center, you can also opt for traditional Thai massage sessions, Reiki treatments, herbal compresses and even Ayurvedic Indian head massage.

Additionally, you can float away after your session in one of the hotel's two infinity edge pools, with Suite guests having access to a private one up on the roof.

Tanjong Jara Resort - Malaysia

Heated sand treatments, Tanjong Jaya

Another interesting warm treatment is the "tuam pasir" heated sand therapy offered by the Tanjong Jara Resort in Malaysia. Hot sand is combined with fenugreek and black seeds, heated in a frying pan and then put into a cotton pouch, which is then used for pressure massage. This treatment is noted for its therapeutic effect on joint pains and inflammation.

An added bonus here is the stunning resort, built to resemble a 17th-century Malay palace and set against a pristine beach, tropical jungle and the South China Sea.

Sankara Hotel - Yakushima, Japan

Relaxing on Yakushima Island

For wood-based treatments, try the Sankara Hotel in Japan. The resort is located on Yakushima Island, famed for its 7,000-year-old Jomon sugi cedar tree, said to hold magical healing powers. The old-growth cryptomeria cedar trees here contain more cedrol (a musky terpene found in the essential oil of conifers) than normal cedars, and the oils are used for healthy sleeping and to reduce stress and anxiety.

Some spa treatments here at the Sankara Sana Spa even include trekking packages to go with treatments that include salt baths and other delights. The villas here are constructed with dark cedar wood, and the forests on Yakushima are UNESCO-listed for their natural beauty.

Baros Maldives

Wood-based treatments, Baros Maldives

Also worth a visit for "wood" treatments is Baros Maldives. Set on a small private island, the dazzling resort's Serenity Spa boasts a TheraNaka East African wood massage, where small blocks of citrus-infused shea butter are massaged/melted into the patient, while rhythmic patterns from wooden musical instruments accompany the acupressure, resulting in one soothing, restorative treatment for a weary body.

Bhutan Spirit Sanctuary - Neyphu Valley, Bhutan

High altitude herbs at the Bhutan Spirit Sanctuary

For an earth-based treatment, why not head to the Himalayas and the high-altitude Bhutan Spirit Sanctuary? This hideaway in Bhutan's Neyphu Valley is built to resemble a traditional Bhutanese dzong fortress. While here, you can have a private consult with a traditional medicine doctor (included with your room), and then have a spa treatment utilizing some of the Sanctuary's collection of over 100 traditional high altitude herbs. The staff here will even give you an herbal garden walk to describe all of the healing properties of the plants you are engaging with.

Wherever you choose to go and whatever type of spa treatment you select, just remember that the journey itself is just as important as the destination, and as the wise Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu commented, "The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step."

And, of course, make sure that your landing spot and recovery is just as enjoyable, or maybe even that much better.

The 10 Best Spa Resorts in the United States

best spa resorts in the usa

We may earn a commission if you buy something from any affiliate links on our site.

There is a tremendous range out there when it comes to the best spa resorts in the USA—from a lush mountaintop escape to a desert oasis to retreats just a short jaunt from New York City. (There field is so dense within the Big Apple, that we've actually broken that one down for you into the best spas in NYC .) And new places are opening all the time—to offer the latest in scientific research, or to return us to an earlier, perhaps more grounded, time. ( Forrest bathing anyone?) Suffice it to say that there's a big range. Any list is subjective, of course, and much of what you might enjoy from a spa experience depends on what you're looking for. But here are some of the standouts in the USA that got our attention as we built Vogue 's Global Spa Guide . Check out our list of the Best Spas in the World as as well—at least one great US retreat made it on to that list, and it would definitely have a spot here if not already noted. Here, in unranked order, we present, our assessment of the best spa resorts in the USA.

Miraval Berkshires Resort & Spa

Image may contain Plant Vegetation Gong Musical Instrument Nature and Outdoors

Oprah put Miraval on the map when she endorsed its flagship Arizona desert destination —a pioneer among wellness resorts before wellness became cliché. Now East Coast Winfrey acolytes who have long dreamed of making a pilgrimage can experience a sliver of the magic at an outpost in woodsy Lenox, Massachusetts. Opened in 2020, Miraval Berkshires represents an expansion beyond the brand’s Arizona origins. It follows an Austin, Texas, offshoot that opened in 2019. While its desert predecessors offer posh four-star refuges, Miraval Berkshires is more cozily understated: "luxury without being too lavish,” according to Director of spa and wellbeing, Jacqueline Berry. And The Life in Balance Spa delivers on that standard, with a buffet of treatments so inventive and elaborately over-the-top, some are aptly called rituals. Try Vasudhara , a warm-water pool float accented by calming underwater sound vibrations or the Oprah-favorite Naga , a guided stretch-massage in which a standing masseuse grips silks dangling from the ceiling to create deep compressions with her feet.

Mayflower Inn & Spa, Auberge Resorts Collection

Image may contain Architecture Building House Housing Porch Lamp Chair and Furniture

The rambling, gambrel-roof inn is an icon of New England hospitality, and the spa is of equal repute, beloved by hotel guests and local residents alike. For the 20,000-square-foot wellness center, Auberge Resorts has partnered with the New York City spa The Well, known for marrying Eastern and Western modalities and making wellness an à la carte experience. At the Mayflower, this means treatments that extend beyond the traditional body and facial work to also include reiki, acupuncture, and Tarot readings. The idea is that your wellness experience does not start and end within the shingled walls but continues far beyond Litchfield County. The Well has worked hard to bring the spa outside: guided hikes, foraging classes, sound baths, summer fitness classes in the tented open-air pavilion, and their signature forest craniosacral therapy . While the overall vibe of the Mayflower is classic New England country with a shot of whimsy (classic chintz layered with striped dhurrie rugs and paper flowers), a more tranquil atmosphere resigns at the spa.

The vibe here is exclusive art-filled Hawaiian island oasis meets Japanese forest ryokan by way of the Four Seasons hotel chain. Guests—generally of the mover-and-shaker 1% variety—come here to unplug and optimize and reconnect with themselves and each other (and, as it’s an adults only resort, to leave the kids behind). The focus is on overall well-being and longevity through treating the whole individual, and programs center on one-on-ones with highly trained Sensei guides. The retreat offers a unique position in the spa resort landscape in that the entire island is something of a personal project: Oracle co-founder and billionaire entrepreneur Larry Ellison bought around 98% of the 90,000 acre Hawaiian island of Lana’i in 2012, including two Four Seasons-operated hotels. One is the five star beachfront resort; further inland lies Sensei Lana’i, the 96-room wellness-focused arm of the operation, which is operated by Four Seasons in conjunction with Ellison’s own hospitality brand, Sensei. It's good to know that this is not a typical resort in the sense of possessing a spa with a communal steam room and sauna open for guests. There are several very thought through programs, and if you're headed here you will want to assess which one seems best for you so you can get the most out of the experience—whether that's a guided slowing down or a more intensive workup and workout.

Sensei Porcupine Creek

Who wouldn’t want to biohack like a billionaire? At Sensei Porcupine Creek , Oracle cofounder and Silicon Valley superstar Larry Ellison ’s Palm Springs retreat, that’s exactly what’s on offer. Sensei’s raison d’être is to optimize well-being through a data-led approach and three pillars: move, nourish, and rest. (Should data collection sound daunting, one can just as easily fill their calendar with spa treatments, pool days, and decadent dinners—technically this counts as both nourish and rest.) Porcupine Creek was formerly one of Ellison’s private homes, and it can still feel that way: I would guess the staff-to-guest ratio to be around five to one. When the front gates close behind you, you may only be a 20-minute drive from the Palm Springs airport, but you might as well be on a different planet. Lucky for you, this one is exceptional on every level.

Shou Sugi Ban House

Image may contain Outdoors Grass Plant Architecture Building Housing House Villa Aerial View Backyard and Nature

Incorporating wellness with healing arts and a culinary program by a Noma founder, all set amid bright and cozy Japanese-inspired minimalist spaces, Shou Sugi Ban House is the Hamptons’ first destination spa and wellness retreat. The vibe is Hamptons beach meets natural, Japanese-inspired aesthetics with a touch of the New Age. Expect a combination of ancient healing arts, movement classes, and local, seasonal, healthy eating and drinking. For example, opt for an early-morning meditation or beach walk, followed by a challenging stretch-and-balance class, before relaxing at the 90-degree saltwater pool and then sampling custom blends at the Tea Barn. There’s something for everyone, says director of special events Taylor Rose Berry, and “most guests discover something they didn’t even know they were looking for.”

You’re less than an hour outside San Diego, but wake up at Cal-a-Vie and wonder whether you’ve been teleported to the French countryside. A meticulously constructed château-style estate (so meticulous, in fact, that several buildings were disassembled in France and rebuilt here), the retreat is made up of 32 private villas and expansive manicured grounds. There are punishing health spas with their detoxes and self-flagellation, and then there’s Cal-a-Vie, where—in between interval training sessions and trapeze yoga classes—you might be offered a salted caramel smoothie. The philosophy here is, in sum, indulge: There are two pools, a hair salon, a nail salon, spare, beautiful treatment rooms, a cold plunge, pickleball courts, tennis courts, and a greenhouse. There is an orange grove. Schedules are personalized, depending on fitness goals and proclivities. So are treatments, which happen in the afternoon as a reward for all the exercise. The vibe is luxury summer camp, with an endless supply of perfectly ripe fruit available upon request. Activities abound (there are over 120 fitness classes), but there is no coercion.

In the 23 years since it opened, Mii Amo has garnered a kind of cult status for in-the-know wellness world aficionados largely thanks to its setting, snuggled within the glowing red rocks of Boynton Canyon in Sedona, Arizona, right in one of the town’s famed “energy vortexes.” (Those who subscribe to certain ideals around chakras and energy flow will find themselves in a very potent position.) Now, thanks to a $40 million renovation (completed in 2022), and faced with an increasingly stressful world, the vibes-forward escape has never felt more necessary. A series of red concrete, stucco, and adobe structures designed to blend into the surrounding canyon, Mii Amo is like a small desert oasis populated by blissed-out people wearing bathrobes. Note that Mii Amo is the younger spa-focused sister property to the larger 218-room Enchantment Resort, which it abuts. Enchantment has a heavier focus on outdoor activities and adventures, while Mii Amo is more focused on interior journeys.

Blackberry Farm and Blackberry Mountain

About a 45-minute drive from the Knoxville airport, through winding mountain roads, sits Blackberry Farm , a wonderland at the foothills of Tennessee’s Smoky Mountains. Guests typically don’t leave the resort, and once you’re there, you’ll see why—there are endless ways to fill your time: from hiking to yoga classes on a deck overlooking the trees, treatments in the multi-floor spa, fly-fishing lessons, kayaking in the pond, petting sheep… it’s summer camp but elevated. Formerly a working farm, Blackberry Farm opened in 1976 as a six-room bed and breakfast, and has since expanded to 68 rooms.

Image may contain Plant Vegetation Land Nature Outdoors Tree Woodland Field Grassland Countryside and Farm

Consider this a two-for-one: Blackberry Mountain , the sister property to the Farm, is a more explicitly-minded wellness retreat, with an emphasis on activity. Upon checking in, you’ll receive a Blackberry Mountain Yeti water bottle, and you're likely to be in athleisure for the rest of your stay. Activities include: hiking, paddle boarding, biking or for the more adventurous—rock climbing or ropes courses. There’s also an on-site art studio that offers pottery, watercolor painting in nature, and more, all inspired by the natural elements. While it’s all very casual, the experience is also refined.

Two Bunch Palms

Pool chairs at Two Bunch Palms Palm Springs CA.

Nestled within 77 acres of lush palm groves just 20 minutes outside of Palm Springs, this legendary desert oasis has been attracting visitors to its natural, mineral-rich hot springs for centuries. In fact, locals say the springs were originally given their name by the Indigenous Cahuilla tribe thousands of years ago. These days, Two Bunch Palms is a full-service resort offering a whole roster of modern treatments, healing workshops, and wellness experiences—what owner Erica Chang appealingly calls “uncomplicated wellness.” While there’s everything from Reiki meditation to adaptogenic body wraps on offer, taking to the waters in the thermal baths is definitely the main draw. The resort’s tucked-away location on the edge of the Coachella Valley lends it an aura of secrecy—but this isn’t the kind of place where you aren’t allowed to speak above a whisper.

Full disclosure, and a bit of a warning as you make your way to the last entry in our best spa resort in the USA list: Esalen is not actually spa. Esalen is a mind institute—a place where you go to heal, expand, or inspire your thinking. (They describe themselves as an “incubator of human potential,” and this isn't the kind of place you go for luxury amenities.) Nor can you book an appointment or simply drop in: You must sign up for one of their specific multi-day workshops. But, among the people who visited and tested for this guide , it ranked among their top destinations. One reason clear: There’s simply an incredible array of options. Sign up for a yoga retreat or one on holistic breathwork, or a program that focuses on leadership or creativity. One of Esalen’s most famous offerings is Gestalt , a form of psychotherapy which focuses on personal responsibility and staying in the present, as well as the exploration of emotions through role playing, painting, and physical experiences. Esalen is the most famous center for Gestalt in the world—and, in fact, pioneered it in the 1960s. The spectacular Big Sur coastline helps as well.

What the Lifestyle Suite at Raffles London lacks in spa facilities, it makes up for in wellness amenities. Light training equipment is provided in the room’s dedicated fitness and yoga space, as well as Normatec recovery boots, weighted blankets, and fragrance-activated technology which releases calming scents at night and energizing aromas in the morning. Guests of this wellness-oriented suite also get access to in-room Guerlain spa treatments, nutritional menus, and private training sessions. Built in 1918 as a residence for immigrant employees of Kohler’s first factories, the American Club doubles as a showroom for the plumbing company’s latest innovations in hydrotherapy. When pups fly: BARK Air, the world's first airline for dogs, take first flight

Bark air says that it has taken the 'white glove experience typical of a human’s first-class experience and redirected all that pampering to pooches.' that experience comes at a cost..

travel spa treatment

The first jet charter company in the world in which every passenger is a VIP (very important pup) is now off the ground.

BARK Air , launched by dog toy company BARK in partnership with a jet charter service, is a luxury airline for man's best friend that transports dogs of all sizes along with their owners “in comfort and in style,” CEO Matt Meeker said in a video provided by Reuters that takes the public behind the scenes of the new airline.

"We’re here to revolutionize flying for dogs," says BARK Air's website.

Tickets sold out for BARK Air's first flight , which took off at 4 p.m. ET from New York, headed to Los Angeles. And flights are filling fast for the month of June.

Here's what you need to know about the new airline, including how much flights cost.

Dogs take first Bark Air flight

BARK Air shared details of the company's first flight on Thursday in an Instagram post.

"Right now, at an altitude of 30,000 feet, there is a flight filled with dogs. Unlike any flight before it, these dogs are not merely an afterthought, nor are they treated as cargo or a burden to the crew and fellow travelers. Here, dogs are the foremost priority," the company posted.

BARK Air continued to say that the effort took 10 years, "but we are finally confident that we can provide all dogs with the air travel experience they deserve: one that puts them first."

One user commented that "this really is the pawfect flight!" Another said: "We woof to see this."

BARK Air's prices aren't cheap

Pet owners can expect to pay $8,000 for a one-way international flight and $6,000 one way for a domestic flight that covers both them and their dog.

For now, routes will serve the New York City metro area via Westchester County Airport (HPN), with flights to the Los Angeles area via Van Nuys (VNY) and London, England via Biggin Hill (BQH), according to BARK Air's website.

What to expect flying BARK Air

The company says that it has taken the “white glove experience typical of a human’s first-class experience and redirected all that pampering to pooches.”

Meeker said that the airlines caters everything to the dog, "trying to lower their anxiety and their stress, so they have the most comfortable, fear-free experience on an airplane."

Food and water are provided for the pooches, and there's "even a spa treatment that happens in air," Meeker said.

BARK Air says that a concierge will learn a dog's temperament and sensitivities before the flight for the best placement on the plane. Dogs will not be caged or on leashes but will be free to sit on the seat, their human, a bed or wherever comfortable, the company says.

There are designated areas before flights for dogs to go potty and emergency pads will be available during flights.

How many dogs can fit on a flight?

Each flight fits 15 dogs and their humans, according to BARK AIR's website, but it never sells more than 10 tickets per flight. Space while flying is important to how animals roam, the company says.

Though there are additional tickets available if more than one human needs to accompany a dog, kids are not allowed to fly BARK Air. Each passenger must be at least 18 years old.
