The Best Essential Oil Diffusers

Our picks for best essential oil diffuser, set against a dark green backdrop.

By Dorie Chevlen and Shannon Palus

An essential oil diffuser offers a simple way to make your home smell nice without the use of scented candles or incense.

After our tests of more than a dozen different diffusers, the Urpower 2nd Gen 300ml Aroma Essential Oil Diffuser —our pick since 2017—continues to be the best choice.

Everything we recommend

travel perfume diffuser

Urpower 2nd Gen 300ml Aroma Essential Oil Diffuser

The best essential oil diffuser.

This diffuser produces a strong mist and lasts several hours between refills. But you have to cycle through every light option to turn it off.

Buying Options

travel perfume diffuser

Urpower 500ml Aromatherapy Essential Oil Diffuser

An equally good 500 ml option.

With a larger, 500 mL tank, this diffuser doesn’t require refills as often. However, it takes up more space than our top pick.

travel perfume diffuser

Vitruvi Stone Diffuser

A smaller, stylish option.

This compact model is the most attractive diffuser we recommend, but its smaller tank doesn’t last as long as our pick’s, and its mist isn’t as powerful. It’s also far pricier.

Organic Aromas Raindrop 2.0 Nebulizing Essential Oil Diffuser

The best nebulizer.

If your top priority is a strong smell, go with a nebulizer. This model is pricier than our top ultrasonic pick and harder to clean, but it’s unbeatable at filling a room (or a few) with scent.

What to know

Most of our picks are ultrasonic: They create a cool mist of water and drops of oil. Nebulizers diffuse pure essential oils only.

The best diffusers have one simple, easy-to-clean lid. Decorative double lids can look pretty but can involve more disassembly.

Most diffusers are made of plastic. Even those advertised as “stone” or “wood” are still plastic inside.

Tanks holding between 300 mL and 500 mL have a small footprint but provide a long-lasting mist session.

The Urpower 2nd Gen 300ml Aroma Essential Oil Diffuser is a simple white plastic cylinder in a field crowded with funny shapes and faux wood. It’s one of the least expensive diffusers we’ve looked at, yet it works better than models four or five times the price.

The medium-size tank provides water for around seven hours; you need to add more oil during that time for continued scent. The machine lights up in seven colors (two brightnesses each), but you have to cycle through all those options to turn the light off. It offers a timer function, it has LED indicator lights that aren’t distractingly bright, and it’s easy to keep clean.

If our top pick is sold out or you’d like a bigger tank, we recommend the Urpower 500ml Aromatherapy Essential Oil Diffuser , a larger version of our top pick. It produces the same strong, rich mist as its smaller counterpart does.

At nearly double the tank size of our top pick, this 500 mL diffuser requires fewer refills—and it has a low-output mode that can run for up to 16 hours. However, a diffuser of this size also takes up more space. Like our top pick, it comes with a faux-wood base or in all-white. It also lights up in seven colors, has a timer similar to that of our pick, and is easy to clean between uses.

We’ve frequently seen the price for this larger version be lower than that of our top pick, but often some colors are sold only via a third-party seller on Amazon instead of Urpower itself. (In general, we prefer not to link to third-party sellers; we have bought from this one, though, and have had no problems.)

If you’d prefer a diffuser that looks nicer and you don’t need to diffuse scent in a large space, we recommend the Vitruvi Stone Diffuser . With a ceramic shell available in several neutral colors, it’s a stylish diffuser that still emits a decently strong mist and is easy to use.

It’s one of the few diffusers we tested with a truly subtle indicator light (positioned on the back of the unit), making it the best choice if you want to run it while you’re sleeping. The tank is small, though, at 70 mL, so you have to refill it more often, and the two layers of lids make cleaning and refilling slightly more annoying than with our top pick and runner-up. At around $100, it’s also considerably pricier.

If you want a device that does the best job of dispersing scent in a large space or across multiple rooms, and you don’t mind spending more money, the Organic Aromas Raindrop 2.0 Nebulizing Essential Oil Diffuser is a nebulizer that mists pure oil. (In contrast, our ultrasonic picks dilute the oils with water.)

Unlike with our other picks, the colored lights on this diffuser are more subtle, and it doesn’t issue a constant visible stream of mist; instead, it produces a subtle intermittent spritz every other minute. Compared with other models of its kind, it’s less expensive, prettier, and far quieter, as nebulizers typically make loud grinding or buzzing sounds.

The Raindrop 2.0 runs for two hours, and an automatic shutoff helps you avoid overdoing the smell. Like all nebulizers, it’s annoying to clean.

The research

Why you should trust us, who this is for, how we picked and tested, our pick: urpower 2nd gen 300ml aroma essential oil diffuser, runner-up: urpower 500ml aromatherapy essential oil diffuser, also great: vitruvi stone diffuser, also great: organic aromas raindrop 2.0 nebulizing essential oil diffuser, other good essential oil diffusers, using and cleaning your diffuser, diffusers and indoor air quality, the competition.

This guide is based on the original research and testing of writer Shannon Palus, who interviewed various experts, including Nena Bowman, PharmD, DABAT , the managing director of the Tennessee Poison Center , to discuss the risks associated with kids getting into your essential oils. In 2024, staff writer Dorie Chevlen retested all of our existing picks to confirm whether they were still up to our standards. Senior staff writer Tim Heffernan, who wrote our guide to humidifiers and our guide to air purifiers , conducted tests to see how the essential oil diffusers affected air quality, using the same particle counter he uses for testing air purifiers.

Unlike candles, a diffuser can’t catch fire, and you can leave it on while you’re away or sleeping. You can also vary the scent just by choosing a different oil.

But diffusers do come with a few annoyances: Diffusers take a couple of minutes to set up, and they need cleaning every few uses. And if you have small kids or pets in the house, or if you have respiratory problems, there are health-related reasons to consider skipping a diffuser.

According to the experts writing on the American Academy of Allergy Asthma & Immunology’s website, as of February 2020, no studies have explicitly looked at the effects of using an essential oil diffuser on symptoms of asthma. But it’s good to exercise caution if you have asthma: “Anecdotally, there have been reports of respiratory symptoms in asthmatics and non-asthmatics due to a variety of diffused essential oils,” the AAAAI experts write.

If you have small children, using a diffuser involves additional considerations. Plan to store your essential oils out of reach, as they smell good enough that kids might assume that they are also tasty. Many oil bottles lack childproof caps, and many oils can be harmful even if ingested in only small amounts . And ingesting citrus and cinnamon oil can cause painful irritation, said Nena Bowman, the managing director of the Tennessee Poison Center.

Likewise, if you have pets, keep essential oils out of reach from them, and diffuse oils with caution. Although the biggest danger comes when people apply oils to their pets (which you should never do), you should also avoid putting certain oils in the air, as the oil can settle on their fur. In our article “ Are Essential Oils Safe for Pets? ” senior staff writer Kaitlyn Wells lists which specific oils to steer clear of. If you have a bird, skip the diffuser altogether: Birds’ lungs are sensitive.

Search for “essential oil diffuser” on Amazon, and you’ll get pages upon pages of devices that are all slight variations of one another—many with buttons that look identical. The company that makes our top pick even confirmed to us that some of the manufacturers get their diffuser parts from the same place.

Ultrasonic diffusers are the more popular type because they’re affordable and they put out a subtle scent, using a vibrating diaphragm to turn a solution of water and oil into a fine, cool mist. Nebulizers, which blow compressed air through concentrated oil to turn it to mist, produce a stronger smell, and they usually cost more and can be noisy.

Note that the word ultrasonic applies to some humidifiers as well, but oil diffusers are not humidifiers—even though diffuser manufacturers sometimes advertise them as such. If you were to run and refill an oil diffuser continuously, it would distribute around 1,000 mL of water over 24 hours. Good humidifiers have much larger tanks and humidity sensors that can distribute far more water over a longer period without needing to be refilled—and they are better able to maintain properly humidified air in your home.

Most of our picks in this guide are ultrasonic, and the features you typically see in ultrasonic diffusers informed our selection criteria. Here are the factors that set the best models apart:

  • Tank size: The size of the tank, more than any other detail, determines how you interact with the diffuser. Ultrasonic-diffuser tank sizes range from around 100 mL to 500 mL. Generally, larger tanks mean thicker mist and longer run times without the need for refills. A larger tank also works better for a larger space.
  • Power: Regardless of tank size, we wanted to see a strong mist. A diffuser with weak mist is less effective at dispersing scent.
  • Material: This is an object that will be on display, so aesthetics matter. Most diffusers come in translucent white plastic options, but you can find them in other materials, such as ceramic, porcelain, and wood.
  • Lids: The easiest diffusers to use, and clean, have just one lid. Fancier diffusers made from materials other than plastic often have two layers of lids, one functional and one decorative. Such a design can be annoying to clean, but that isn’t a dealbreaker, especially if your diffuser is more of a decorative item.
  • Timer: Many medium and large diffusers have a timer that can turn off the diffuser after one or a few hours. This function allows you to run the diffuser several times without refilling the water. (You should empty and wipe out your diffuser every few days if you’re not using up all the water.) It’s a nice feature but not necessary.
  • Lights: Most ultrasonic diffusers light up in one way or another, often in a rainbow of colors. The hues can be relaxing or a little cheesy, depending on your tastes. Luckily, such models almost always allow you to turn the lights off.

We browsed through hundreds of oil diffusers for sale online and eliminated dozens that didn’t meet our criteria. We ended up testing 17 diffusers for four weeks. We used our selections at home, quickly eliminating a few for undesirable design elements or confusing buttons.

We observed the diffusers running side by side to compare the size and height of their mist streams, the key factors in how well they distribute oils. Then we ran the diffusers for several hours to confirm how effectively they scented the room.

We rotated the diffusers through various locations: kitchen counter, living room next to a litter box, guest room, bookshelf, atop a toilet tank, and on a table in a dark bedroom at bedtime, noting how bright the indicator lights were and paying attention to any annoying sounds.

Our pick for best essential oil diffuser overall, the Urpower 2nd Gen 300ml Aroma Essential.

Various versions of the Urpower 2nd Gen 300ml Aroma Essential Oil Diffuser have been our top pick since 2017.

It can run for about seven hours. The 300 mL tank is three times the size of those in most other similarly priced diffusers, which allows it to continually produce mist over twice as long. In addition to being able to run until it’s empty (when it automatically shuts off), this diffuser has timer options to run for one, two, or three hours—a common but not universal feature.

It has the strongest mist stream. The mist from our top pick is one of the strongest we’ve seen in comparison with similar-size units, and that translates to a strong scent that fills the room. If you prefer a more subtle scent, you can use less oil.

It’s nondescript (in a good way) and a great value. This model’s cylindrical, plain white plastic design was one of our favorites in a field filled with strange shapes and fake plastic wood. And it takes up half the footprint of many other models, including some with smaller tanks. At just under $30, and frequently on sale for less, it performs very well for the price—ours has been running well since 2019, with no issues. Although you can set the diffuser to glow in seven different color options (two brightnesses each), you can also use it without a light. The small yellow-green LED indicator next to the mist button is less noticeable than the red and green light on several of the other units we considered. Plus, this diffuser is pretty quiet, though as with most ultrasonic diffusers, you can hear a subtle whirring sound if you get close.

It’s easy to clean. Compared with units that have a second, decorative lid, this model is easy to wipe down between uses. All diffusers need regular cleaning, but senior staff writer Jackie Reeve says the process of cleaning hers is “pretty unfussy, even when we haven’t used the diffuser in a while and it needs extra attention.”

Flaws but not dealbreakers

  • Like most essential oil diffusers, this Urpower model has no simple on/off switch for the mist or for the lights; you have to cycle through every option to shut off either function. This limitation is particularly annoying for the light, since you have so many options to go through. For the mist button, you have to long-press it before it turns on, which confused us at first.
  • The buttons beep when you press them, and this model issues a quiet beep when it shuts off. If you want to fall asleep while using this diffuser and are an exceptionally light sleeper, that sound may wake you up.
  • Previous testers of this Urpower diffuser noted that the lid snapped on very securely—sometimes to the point where it was hard to remove. During our testing of the current version in 2024, we had the opposite experience: The lid didn’t lock on at all. According to the updated product page, Urpower eliminated the “buckles” that used to make the lid hard to remove. The design change is great news for people with dexterity issues, but this version of the diffuser may not be good for a household with curious kids.

Our pick for best essential oil diffuser with a slightly bigger tank, the UrPower 500 milliliter Aromatherapy.

The Urpower 500ml Aromatherapy Essential Oil Diffuser produces an equally strong mist in comparison with our pick but has a larger water tank and a wider footprint.

It can run for up to 16 hours. This model’s 500 mL tank is nearly double the size of our top pick’s tank and about five times the size of those in other, similarly priced diffusers. Unlike all the other diffusers we tested, this 500 mL Urpower model has a “low” mode to produce a weaker mist that can last up to 16 hours. (It lasts about 10 hours on the higher setting.) It also has timer options to run for one, two, or three hours.

It’s beefier. Measuring about 6.5 inches in diameter, in contrast to just over 4 inches for our top pick, the 500 mL version takes up more space on a counter. The difference isn’t significant, but it is something to keep in mind if space is at a premium or if you prefer to run shorter sessions and want to avoid having standing water in your diffuser.

It has the same lights and looks as our top pick. The 500 mL Urpower diffuser has seven options for light colors with two brightnesses each, or you can run it with no light at all. The green indicator light is less bright than that of our top pick, a plus if you’re running the diffuser while you sleep and need near-total darkness. As with our top pick, you have to toggle through all the light settings to turn the illumination off. This model also comes in an all-white option, as well as a few more faux-wood “stain” options than our top pick.

You can usually find it at a great price. At times we’ve seen the 500 mL Urpower diffuser at a lower price than our 300 mL top pick, but some of the color options for this model are typically sold only via a third-party seller on Amazon instead of Urpower itself (though the item still ships from Amazon). In general, we don’t recommend third-party sellers, but we have bought from this one, and we’ve had no problems. If the 500 mL Urpower model is sold out, we recommend the Asakuki 500ml Essential Oil Diffuser , which is almost identical and performs exactly the same but comes only in faux-wood options.

Our pick for best essential oil diffuser with a great design, the Vitruvi Stone Diffuser, in white.

If you want a diffuser that’s sculptural and available in subtle, earthy tones, we like the Vitruvi Stone Diffuser .

It’s a beautiful object. This Vitruvi diffuser has a tapered, ceramic shell and comes in several understated colors, including black, white, blush, sage, and terra-cotta. Note, though, that the colors are seasonal and will vary.

It’s very small, but it’s still strong. At 70 mL, the tank in this diffuser is about one-third the size of our top pick’s tank, so you can expect to refill it more often if you want it to run continuously for more than three hours. For a model of this size, the mist is still strong and visible, though not as strong as what you can get from our top pick and runner-up. This diffuser offers an option for intermittent diffusing, which our pick lacks; on that setting it can run for eight hours, by turning the mist on and off every few minutes. We don’t like the intermittent setting as much—in our opinion, the continuous mist makes for a nicer ambience. Not surprisingly, this diffuser has the smallest footprint of any of our picks, at just under 3.5 inches.

Its lighting is subtle. This Vitruvi diffuser has only one light: a small ring of yellow around the bottom. But that light has four settings (dim, bright, pulsing, and off) that make it more elegant, though perhaps not as fun, in comparison with the multicolored light options on our top pick and runner-up. And because the LED indicator lights are small and placed on the back of the unit, this model is the best choice if you want to run your diffuser in a dark space.

The decorative lid can be annoying. This model has two lids, an inner plastic one and an outer decorative ceramic shell, which can be cumbersome to remove when you’re refilling the unit or cleaning it out. And since the tank is small, you need to handle such tasks more often than with one of our larger diffuser picks.

Also, the outer ceramic shell on one of our Vitruvi diffusers cracked when we accidentally knocked it over on the kitchen counter. We don’t expect ceramic to be shatterproof, but this is something to be aware of if you’d prefer not to worry about your diffuser breaking. Vitruvi sells replacement covers should that happen.

Our pick for best essential oil diffuser with a strong aroma and a great design, the Organic Aromas Raindrop 2.0.

If you want a strong aroma and are willing to accept a more difficult cleaning process, we like the Organic Aromas Raindrop 2.0 Nebulizing Essential Oil Diffuser .

It’s mighty strong. But it uses more oil. This diffuser is capable of dispersing enough scent to fill a small house or apartment. It runs intermittently on about 20 drops of undiluted oil—considerably more oil than the few drops you need for ultrasonic water diffusers. The unit has a dial for you to control the amount of mist and scent that comes out.

It runs for a maximum of only two hours. The Raindrop 2.0 disperses oil for two minutes and then turns off for one minute; after two hours it automatically shuts off.

It looks pretty and is relatively quiet. You can choose from a painted black hardwood or a natural hardwood base. A grippy bottom keeps the diffuser stable. Although this diffuser makes noise, as all nebulizers do, it isn’t very loud unless you have it misting on full blast. The light inside the clear glass automatically rotates through various colors, but you can tap the touch-sensitive button to leave it on a certain color or turn it off entirely. In our tests, the button to turn the light on was sometimes too easy to press by mistake, yet at other times we had to do a couple of taps to turn it off.

It’s harder to clean. You need to clean this diffuser about once a week and between oils. That’s more cleaning than nebulizers with fewer glass parts require—and it’s a more difficult overall cleaning process in comparison with that of our ultrasonic picks.

The fine oil mist this diffuser sprays might cling to surfaces nearby, as one owner notes , so make sure to put nothing near it that can get ruined by oil stains.

If you’re loyal to Muji and its simple aesthetic: The Muji Ultrasonic Aroma Diffuser 3 oz from the popular Japanese retailer has a simple all-white design similar to that of the 300 mL Urpower model but with more subtle attention to detail. Unfortunately, it costs significantly more than our top pick for an even smaller size, about 90 mL. But it’s cheaper than our upgrade pick from Vitruvi, and you can often find it on sale. You can’t change the light to a different color—it’s just a warm white in two brightness settings. Our editor of home coverage has had this diffuser since 2016, and it continues to work perfectly. Muji also sells a larger, 10-ounce (300 mL) diffuser , as well as dozens of essential oil blends .

If you want a very small and cheap diffuser: The 100 mL Urpower 2nd Generation Essential Oil Diffuser is a smaller version of our pick, and it costs much less than the similarly sized Vitruvi Stone Diffuser . But at that size, you have a lot more design options, and we wanted to recommend something more attractive than this plastic-finish model—which led us to the Vitruvi diffuser. We also tested the practically identical InnoGear Aromatherapy Essential Oil Diffuser , which worked great too.

Clean a diffuser every few days. Manufacturers recommend cleaning ultrasonic diffusers once every few days or uses so that oils don’t build up and nothing can grow in the stagnant water. The maintenance instructions for our top pick recommend using a little fragrance-free dish soap. For a deep clean, Apartment Therapy suggests running the diffuser with a diluted vinegar solution every so often, or about once a month if you use it regularly. If you’re switching oils between uses, wipe out the diffuser with a damp cloth.

Clean a nebulizer once a week. The maintenance instructions for our favorite nebulizer recommend cleaning the device with rubbing alcohol once a week. If you’re switching oils, clean it between uses. If you see oil buildup that doesn’t come off with a regular cleaning, soak the glass reservoir in hot water with some dish soap.

Tap water is fine to use. We used tap water while testing the ultrasonic diffusers, even though some companies suggest using distilled water because the minerals in tap water get propelled into the air along with your oil. The EPA says that it’s perfectly safe (PDF) to use tap water in an ultrasonic humidifier, which puts a lot more water into the air than a diffuser. As we note in our humidifier guide , however, tap water can produce a fine, white dust near the device or leave sediment in the water reservoir.

During testing, we looked at how our essential oil diffuser picks affected indoor air quality. We tested multiple essential oils and blends, using four ultrasonic diffusers—the 300 mL Urpower diffuser, the 500 mL Asakuki model, the Vitruvi Stone Diffuser, and the 100 mL Urpower 2nd Generation model—and the Organic Aromas Raindrop 2.0 nebulizer. In a roughly 200-square-foot bedroom, senior staff writer Tim Heffernan measured how the machines affected the number of airborne particles with the same TSI AeroTrak 9306 particle counter that he uses in testing for our guide to air purifiers . He closed the windows and shut off his apartment’s ventilation system during the tests, and he filled the diffusers with distilled water to ensure that no dissolved minerals made it into the air and affected the results. He added the oils in the manufacturer-recommended quantities.

As we expected, all the machines raised the number of fine particles in the air—after all, they work by doing exactly that. The numbers in the chart below show the increase in particles of a 0.3-micron diameter (0.3 micron being the HEPA test standard):

Airborne particulates: Ultrasonic diffusers vs. nebulizers

A chart displaying the difference in airborne particles between Ultrasonic diffusers and nebulizers.

For each test, Tim ran the particle counter for five minutes with the diffuser or nebulizer off to get a baseline reading of the air quality in the room, after which he turned the diffuser or nebulizer on for 30 minutes at its highest continuous setting. He placed the diffuser or nebulizer on his bedside table, with the particle counter a few feet away on the headboard. After 15 minutes, he moved the particle counter to a second table on the far side of the bed, about 8 feet away, to see if distance affected the airborne-particle count.

We found two main takeaways from our findings. First, the nebulizer showed a much greater increase in particulate levels in the air than the diffusers. That isn’t surprising: Nebulizers create a fine mist of pure essential oil droplets, while diffusers create a mist composed mostly of water with a small amount of essential oil mixed in. (Most diffuser makers recommend about four or five drops of essential oil per 100 mL of water.) The water rapidly evaporates and, as a result, does not show up in the particle counts; what’s left over are the relatively sparse oil droplets.

Second, the diffusers created a fairly uniform concentration of airborne particles throughout the room, while the nebulizer concentrated them in its immediate vicinity—note the dropoff for the nebulizer at minute 20, after Tim moved the particle counter away from it.

So, does any of this matter? It’s well established that fine particles of soot, smoke, and dust have negative health impacts when inhaled, but what about fine droplets of essential oils?

Tim spoke with Sachiko Koyama , an assistant research professor at the Indiana University School of Medicine who co-authored a comprehensive review of the ways in which essential oils’ impacts on the body are affected by the mode of delivery (by inhalation, topically, or by ingestion). In general, she told us, aromatherapeutic uses of essential oils can be considered safe, because the oils themselves are not inherently dangerous when inhaled and because their concentration in the air is low. Koyama noted that much higher concentrations are used in the established practice of smell training , which may help to restore a sense of smell to people who have lost it (including some who lost their sense of smell post–COVID-19 ). Koyama did note that some people are allergic to components found in essential oils, and that overexposure to essential oils may create sensitivity to them in people who previously were not negatively affected. In addition, as mentioned above in “ Who this is for ,” there are also anecdotal reports of essential oils negatively affecting the breathing of asthmatics and non-asthmatics alike. And as Wirecutter senior staff writer Kaitlyn Wells reports, some airborne essential oils can be dangerous to pets . But “if you don’t have a specifical allergy,” Koyama said, “for most people I don’t think it will cause a problem.”

In 2021, we tested the Canopy Aroma Diffuser . Unlike an ultrasonic diffuser or a nebulizer, it evaporates oils directly. You soak oils into a little puck of diatomite, a porous mineral made of the shells of tiny sea creatures; a fan blows air past the puck, evaporating the oil. It’s a neat system in theory because it requires no cleaning beyond an occasional wipe-down. But in practice, we found the scent to be very weak. We also don’t like that this model comes with only one puck—you need to purchase separate pucks to switch scents. The “diffusion well,” a larger diatomite option that holds an upside-down oil bottle, can deliver up to three weeks of aroma, but it works only with tiny, 5 mL bottles, as the common 10 mL bottles are too tall.

The Diffuser World Aroma-Ace nebulizer was the most industrial-looking device we tested: no wood (real or fake), no colorful lights. In our tests it was louder than anything else we evaluated by far, emitting a grinding, buzzing sound as it dispersed oil—it sounded kind of like a refrigerator with a worn-out compressor (video) . Diffuser World sells a “sound reducer” attachment that is supposed to dampen the sound, but we found that it didn’t work very well. We also tested the Diffuser World Aroma-Infinity , which costs more than our nebulizer pick from Organic Aromas.

The Now Solutions Real Bamboo Ultrasonic Oil Diffuser is made of real wood on the outside, but the inside is plastic. It has an option for intermittent diffusing as well as a timer—a combination that we didn’t see on many other ultrasonic diffusers. However, in our tests the mist was weaker than what our picks produced.

The Stadler Form Mia Aroma Diffuser looks sleek and has a matte finish, no mood light, and just one button. However, in our tests it produced a weak mist in comparison with our picks, and sometimes the mist was hard for us to see at all, which made it less visually interesting.

The Stadler Form Jasmine Aroma Diffuser , the larger version of the Mia, offers an option to run in intervals, 10 minutes on and 20 minutes off, for 24 hours. While its mist was stronger than the Mia’s, it was still weaker than what we got from our picks.

We used to recommend the Vivitest Ceramic Diffuser as a cheap dupe for the Vitruvi Stone Diffuser; the two models look nearly identical and are made from the same materials. However, in early 2023 we saw that satisfaction with both the product and the seller had significantly dropped. In particular, buyers complained that the Vivitest diffuser simply stopped working after about a year of use.

For past versions of this guide, we also tested and dismissed the Diffuser World Aroma-Express, the InnoGear 500ml Aromatherapy Essential Oil Diffuser, and the Welledia Pleasant Essential Oil Glass Nebulizing Diffuser, all of which are now discontinued. We demoted a previous also-great pick, the Kumi Stone Diffuser , due to supply issues in late 2022. It has now been totally discontinued.

Canopy waterless diffuser.

Why We Love It : Out of the 24 oil diffusers we tested, the Canopy Aroma Diffuser reigned supreme for its minimalistic design, mild sound, versatility, and overall value. The waterless, mistless diffuser features three fan settings with accompanying indicator lights for slow, medium, and fast. And although the hum intensifies with higher fan settings, we hardly noticed it, and actually appreciated the soft whirring at night, along with the not-too-bright lights that turn off automatically after settings are selected, so as not to disturb sleep if you were to place it in a bedroom.

Who It's For : Unlike some diffusers made of plastic, this one isn't an eyesore—it comes in three core colors that'll elevate any room and match most design aesthetics, including our boho style. Its compact size suited our living room without adding to any clutter, but it's also small enough to fit on a bathroom sink so long as there's an outlet available.

Our Trick : In the morning, drip three drops of an energizing scent onto the puck and turn on the fan to elicit a mild aroma that lasts a few hours. After it fades, switch to a wind-down scent to take you through the end of the day.

Best Budget

Homeweeks aromatherapy essential oil diffuser.

Why We Love It : At only $12, this essential oil diffuser was a steal, effectively scenting every room we placed it in including our living room, office, and bedroom. The scent would also linger long after the diffuser stopped running, which we were pleased about. Adding water and oil to the diffuser took only a matter of seconds and we didn't experience any spillage. We also found it easy to navigate the settings, as the diffuser only has two intuitive control buttons: one for the lights and one for the diffuser.

Who It's For : There are two mist settings to choose from: three hours in continuous mode or six hours in intermittent mode. In both, we couldn't detect any noise on the device whatsoever. The mist was also very light; we could only see it if we were within three to five feet of it.

Our Trick : We're fans of the wood element on the base of this model as well as the fact that we could choose from seven LED light colors based on our mood. The device also has an option of turning the lights off altogether, which can be helpful for sleeping. All in all, we found it peaceful having this diffuser on and running, especially while working.

Type: Ultrasonic| Materials: Polypropylene| Aromatherapy: Yes| Portable: Yes| Power: Corded electric |Run Time: 6 hours| Timer: 3 hours in continuous mode or 6 hours in intermittent mode (30 seconds on, 30 seconds off)| Auto-Shut Off: Yes| Size: 6.61 x 4.72 x 4.72 inches

Best Ceramic

Vitruvi stone essential oil diffuser.

Why We Love It : Vitruvi is a popular oil diffuser brand with a loyal fan base, and after trying it ourselves we can confirm this ceramic model lives up the hype. Made of a sandy, textured ceramic, the design of this diffuser blew us out of the water: Resembling a small artisanal terracotta vase, it gives expensive energy, especially on our bedroom vanity next to perfume bottles, gold jewelry, makeup, magazines, and a large gold circle mirror. While the ceramic cover has a good weight to it, it's still portable enough that we could move it around our space (or from room-to-room) compared to larger, clunkier machines. It's very easy to control and use, with clearly labeled buttons for the timer, mist, and light settings. We toggled between full brightness in the morning, dim brightness in the late afternoon, and no light when we went to sleep.

Who It's For : Unlike some diffusers that have a bubbly, rolling noise, this diffuser is essentially silent when on the lightest setting spanning four hours (what we used most of the time). The full eight-hour mist setting had a very faint, gentle whooshing-like sound, but we only noticed it when the room was completely silent and even so, we had to consciously listen for it. And with care instructions so relaxed they're borderline neglectful, say no more, we're in.

Our Trick : We don't think our diffuser could hold 70 mL of water, regardless of what the user manual said, and after a few spills, we discovered a shot glass-size worth of water is the sweet spot if you like to keep your floors dry.

Type: Ultrasonic| Materials: Ceramic| Aromatherapy: Yes| Portable: Yes| Power: Corded electric| Run Time: 4 to 8 hours| Timer: 4/8 hours| Auto-Shut Off: Yes| Size: 5 x 5 x 5 inches

Best Electric Diffuser

Better homes & gardens 3-piece diffuser set.

Why We Love It : For an electric diffuser that takes up a minimal amount of space, offers light features, and is quieter compared to other models, nothing beats this one from Better Homes & Gardens. We could still smell the oils when we were standing 10 feet away from it—surprising given its small size. We also love that it doesn't look like a typical diffuser, but more like a charming candle holder than an oil diffuser, thanks to the flickering light inside. To get started, we removed the cover and reservoir cap, added water and then dropped in the recommended 10 drops of an essential oil (it came with two, mint and lavender), put the cap and cover back on and pressed power on.

Who It's For : Anyone who appreciates a foolproof power system and easy, infrequent care are a great fit for this diffuser. Cleaning the basin was a cinch because it's so compact, only needing one quick swipe of a microfiber cloth.

Our Trick : We could hear a slight hum and a trickle of water while it was running, which we extremely relaxing, and the perfect level of white noise to fall asleep.

Type: Ultrasonic| Materials: Not listed| Aromatherapy: Yes| Portable: Yes| Power: Corded electric| Run Time: 4 hours| Timer: None| Auto-Shut Off: Yes| Size: 5.75 x 5.75 x 6.88 inches

Best for Small Rooms

Soicare cordless oil diffuser.

Why We Love It : We think this diffuser from Soicare is best for office spaces and small rooms alike, thanks to its portable size and hefty aroma when you're close to it. The diffuser has three light settings: one bright light, one dim light, and an "off" button. There's a faint hum sound while it's running, but nothing that we could hear over the television, fan, or noise machine while sleeping or relaxing on the couch.

Who It's For : No-nonsense users may appreciate the fairly basic trio of light settings and timer options. Filling this diffuser up was equally simple, so you can fill 'er up and get going.

Our Trick : We love this design, too, and were it not for the buttons, it would look like a fancy ridged vase sitting on top of a table. We placed it in our office and thought it amped up the room nicely, especially during Zoom calls.

Type: Ultrasonic| Materials: Plastic| Aromatherapy: Yes| Portable: Yes| Power: Corded electric and battery operated| Run Time: 5 to 7 hours| Timer: 1, 2, 3 hours| Auto-Shut Off: Yes| Size: 3.98 x 3.07 x 6.73 inches

Best for Sleep

Opalhouse ceramic oil diffuser.

Why We Love It : For those who love to run their diffuser overnight, this one from Opalhouse has an eight-hour run time that maintained a soothing ambience in our bedroom while we slept. Using this diffuser was a convenient and an easy process—both the ceramic cover and inner hard plastic cover remove with ease, and the water reservoir is wide, making it easy to fill with water without making a mess. There's also has an easy-to-read "max fill" line that's decently spaced from the top edge of the reservoir—this extra space prevented us from spilling water as we walked from one room to another.

Who It's For : Design lovers will appreciate the ceramic cream-colored vessel dotted with oval cut-outs, allowing a soft glow to peek out. Best of all, it doesn't have any clunky exterior buttons—it's just a smooth, continuous, chic-looking surface—and only the very faint humming noise reveals its true function. The forgetful among us can rely on the automatic shut-off feature once water runs out since it's so quiet, it's easy to set it and forget it.

Our Trick : The water reservoir is large at 300 mL, so we added a few more drops of oil (eight to 10) than usual and the scent filled our living room without being too overpowering (although it did waft into the hallway, because our neighbor complimented the nice, fresh scent).

Type: Ultrasonic| Materials: Ceramic| Aromatherapy: Yes| Portable: No| Power: Corded electric| Run Time: 8 hours| Timer: None| Auto-Shut Off: Yes| Size: 6.64 x 5.25 x 5.25 inches

Best Cordless

Vitruvi diffuser.

 Amazon

Why We Love It : No outlet, no problem. This cordless and portable option from Vitruvi comes with a rechargeable battery and charging pad, so we never had to be without it. Each of the four neutral colorways—black, white, gray, and pink—feature an optional LED ring light for an extra bit of ambiance (and can turn off fully if we're not in the mood).

Who It's For : Clutter-phobes may enjoy the tall, slender design, which hardly took up any space at all, even in our 250-square foot living room or 40-square foot tiny bathroom, while those who want their devices to be sniffed and not heard will like how silent this model is (the light and the wisp of mist were the only indicators it was on). Overall, its modern, stylish aesthetic makes it easy to match to any decor style—great for those who don't have a design eye to begin with.

Our Trick : It's not as simple to fully charge or fill: It took about two hours to reach the max charge (eight hours with the charging pad) and we don't care to admit how many times we accidentally tilted the basin after refilling, splashing water all over our floors, so we kept it stationary and tucked away in our kitchen, where messes are more forgiving and outlets more abundant.

Type: Ultrasonic| Materials: Plastic| Aromatherapy: Yes| Portable: Yes| Power: Rechargeable battery| Run Time: 8 hours| Timer: 4/8 hours| Auto-Shut Off: Yes| Size: 9 x 4.6 x 4 inches

Best for Large Rooms

Innogear essential oil diffuser.

Why We Love It : Large spaces require a diffuser that can pack a punch, and we found this one from InnoGear, despite its 100-mL water reservoir and palm-sized design, up for the task. We ran the diffuser for about five hours at a time and it created an instant fragrance that wafted from our office, to the living room, and even the bedroom down the hall. We didn't hear any sounds coming from this diffuser while using it at night or when sitting right next to it.

Who It's For : Opening and closing it can be done with one hand (and doesn't require any strength to do so), making it great for those with dexterity issues, and with only two buttons on the machine, one for LED lights and one for mist strength, plus an auto-shut off, it's easy for teens and tweens to use.

Our Trick : A con we found on this device is that the water fill line is difficult to see in minimal lighting. But, the good news is that the water line comes with great variety: Exceeding the water line will produce a low mist while staying under the water line produces a larger mist.

Type: Ultrasonic| Materials: Polypropylene| Aromatherapy: Yes| Portable: No| Power: Corded electric| Run Time: 3 to 8 hours| Timer: None| Auto-Shut Off: Yes| Size: 3.94 x 3.94 x 5.51 inches

Best Essential Oil Diffuser

Asakuki rock essential oil diffuser.

Why We Love It : This melon-sized powerhouse from Asakuki diffused the air beautifully with the orange, lavender, and lemongrass oils we put inside. Its compact design didn't take up too much space in our master bedroom, and we loved the sleek white top paired with the rustic wood-looking base. The diffuser has controls for the light and mist on the unit itself, but it also comes with a handy remote (we use it daily!), and even works from up to 16.5 feet away.

Who It's For : We love a hushed tech device, and the noise from this diffuser was so subtle (even on the highest setting) that we could barely notice when it was running, which allowed us to sleep with no issues.

Our Trick : We had a lot of fun bouncing between the bright colored lights and intensities as we switched settings, but we stuck to the more subdued shades in the evenings and frequently even used it as a nightlight.

Type: Ultrasonic| Materials: Polypropylene| Aromatherapy: Yes| Portable: No| Power: Corded electric| Run Time: 10 to 18 hours| Timer: 60/120/180-minute timers| Auto-Shut Off: Yes| Size: 6.77 x 6.77 x 5.39 inches

Best Design

Seasons aero sm nebulizing diffuser.

Why We Love It : Portable, waterless, and pretty to look at, we fell in love with how this diffuser from Seasons stood in our kitchen and living room. A definite conversation starter, it comes in four different shades, including a matcha green model, which we tested and found to complement our vintage aesthetic perfectly. The small, round shape was also easy to place in our small space that was already full of decor. We didn't run into any issues using the diffuser and we skipped reading the manual since it was pretty easy to distinguish each buttons' usage.

Who It's For : If you prefer to bring your diffuser along with you from room to room, you can! It's powered by a USB charging cable and also comes with a removable strap for easy transporting (this also makes it great for fitness instructors who plan to tote it along to classes).

Our Trick : We were definitely satisfied with the smell output from this diffuser. We moved it between our kitchen and living room and could still smell it from the opposite room in which it sat. Even in a small house, the scent was never too faint or too overwhelming.

Type: Nebulizing| Materials: Resin and polypropylene| Aromatherapy: Yes| Portable: Yes| Power: USB| Run Time: 15 hours| Timer: 1/2/5 hours| Auto-Shut Off: Yes| Size: 3.5 x 6.1 inches

Best Aromatherapy

Organic aromas raindrop nebulizing diffuser.

Why We Love It : The device has eight light settings that can change periodically or stay a solid color depending on preference. We found them to be incredibly relaxing, especially when used in darker rooms. We also liked the timer setting because it alternates at two minutes on, then one minute off for two hours straight, which we thought allowed the scents to cascade across our apartment in comfortable doses. While the "spreadability" changed from room to room, the smell was able to reach the entire space when we used it in the middle of our apartment. The mist from the diffuser was noticeable and extended about a foot above, but it still didn't feel like we had a fog machine in the apartment.

Who It's For : Don't care for a diffuser-humidifier hybrid? If you're after a model that simply scents the space with a pleasing aroma, we find this one from Organic Aromas such a joy. Used in a 1000-square foot apartment, the diffuser is about the size of a one-liter water bottle, making it easy to place on various surfaces in our home. Its beaker-like design is cool, sleek, and most definitely provided a zen and peaceful aura to every room we placed it on.

Our Trick : The only annoyance was the power source, but we turned this con into a pro by plugging it into the bathroom wall (at a safe distance) while relaxing in the tub for an extra zen moment of self-care.

Type: Nebulizing| Materials: Hardwood| Aromatherapy: Yes| Portable: No| Power: Corded electric| Run Time: 2 hours| Timer: 2 minutes on, 1 minute off| Auto-Shut Off: Yes| Size: 8.39 x 8.31 x 4.49 inches

Best for Car

Innogear car diffuser.

Why We Love It : We loved the portable InnoGear Car Diffuser primarily for making our car smell nice, though we love that it has the humidifying function as well. It has a green power light indicating it's on and an optional LED light that can be set to a solid color or a cycling of rainbow of colors. While in use, we didn't find this model to be noisy—we were still able to listen to music in our car without having the device's fan-like sound overpower it.

Who It's For : We found this to be an easy diffuser to use, and were glad to see that it wasn't overly-complicating and, thus, distracting while driving. There are two mist settings: A continuous mist that diffuses until the water runs out, or an intermittent mist that mists and pauses every 30 seconds. Though we had to walk the diffuser to our house to fill it up, it was easy to add the right amount of water without spilling it on the way back out to the car. We also enjoyed the auto-shut off option that turned off when there was no more water left in the basin.

Our Trick : Because this diffuser is powered by a USB, we plugged it into our laptop during a long drive so we could work and enjoy aromatherapy at the same time. Plus, it compact size was designed to fit inside a cup holder, so it's fully out of the way.

Type: Ultrasonic |Materials: Polypropylene |Aromatherapy: Yes |Portable: Yes |Power: USB |Run Time: 3 hours |Timer: None |Auto-Shut Off: Yes |Size: 3.15 x 2.95 x 5.12 inches

Best Essential Oil Humidifier

Bzseed aromatherapy essential oil diffuser humidifier.

Why We Love It : We love a good two-in-one product, especially if it involves aromatherapy and humidifying, as this one from BZseed does so efficiently. It increases the humidity in the air while perfuming our space with the peppermint, lavender, tea tree oil, and eucalyptus we placed in it. Regardless of what room we were in, we were able to smell the essential oils from about 10 feet away, satisfying our desire for a diffuser with a far reach.

Who It's For : Cleaning the diffuser is simple because it is so wide and easy to access. We rinsed it with a warm water-vinegar combination, and used a cotton swab to clean in the cracks and corners. We also found it super easy to add oil to the diffuser without spilling, thanks to the fact that the water bowl is almost as wide as the whole diffuser.

Our Trick : Something we noticed is that all of the buttons look identical, so we had to check the manual and experiment to figure out what they do. In the end, we discovered that there's one button to cycle through seven light options and another to set the mist level and timer. The diffuser has an indicator light on the buttons as well as an LED light ring that extends around its base. You have the option of dimming and brightening it or turning it off altogether, making it a prime pick for those who may have light sensitivities.

Type: Ultrasonic| Materials: Plastic| Aromatherapy: Yes| Portable: No| Power: Corded electric| Run Time: 9 to 14 hours| Timer: 1/3/6 hours| Auto-Shut Off: Yes| Size: 6.2 x 6.2 x 7.4 inches

Best Scented Diffuser

Pura 3 smart home fragrance device starter set.

Why We Love It : A plug-in scented diffuser like the Pura Smart Home Fragrance Device Starter Set is unobtrusive yet powerful in its ability to perfume any space. This ranked high when it came to ease of use since all we had to do was pop in two bottles of essential oils, which were provided, and that was it. When the essential oils ran out, we simply popped the bottles out, recycled them, and replaced them. We were able to smell the waterless diffuser while standing 15 feet away and the scent was still present even when we walked into different rooms. Most impressively, the diffuser didn't exhibit any noise whatsoever and we could turn the light off to sleep.

Who It's For : Anyone who loves new tech that feature all the bells and whistles will be a big fan of this minimally designed device. Controlling the diffuser required downloading the accompanying app—from there, we were able to scan the fragrance, choose timer settings, cycle through adjustable LED lights, and create a personalized schedule. The diffuser also has Google Home and Amazon Alexa capabilities.

Our Trick : Via the app, we set schedules and colors the first day we had it, and have been relaxing ever since instead of fussing with buttons.

Best for Relaxation

Pure enrichment crystal himalayan salt rock lamp & oil diffuser.

Williama Sonoma

Why We Love It : This diffuser from Pure Enrichment is the perfect alternative to a spa day, simultaneously delivering the therapeutic benefits of salt therapy and aromatherapy all at the same time. With only one intensity for diffusing and five options for light, this diffuser features Himalayan pink salt, which comes with detoxifying, soothing benefits. Both buttons are clearly labeled and can be turned on with a simple soft touch—no pressing, clicking, or turning necessary. It also comes with a cute little measuring cup to fill the deep reservoir with water, and if you fill it to the max, you'll get 16 hours of run time.

Who It's For : Although some may find the gigantic Himalayan salt rock design a little too woowoo, we couldn't get enough of the wellness-inspired ambiance and kept it on nearly 24/7. It only flipped off when we forgot it was running—that's how quiet it was.

Our Trick : It's quite bulky and rather heavy, which made our nightstand look cluttered, so we made it a focal point on our coffee table.

Type: Ultrasonic| Materials: Crystal| Aromatherapy: Yes| Portable: No| Power: Corded electric| Run Time: 16 hours| Timer: None| Auto-Shut Off: Yes| Size: 7.25 x 7.25 x 8.75 inches

Best Waterless

Eco modern essentials nebulizing diffuser.

ECO Modern Essentials

Why We Love It : If you're turned off by the idea of water diffusers and want to feel better about the air you breathe, this one from Eco will become a welcomed addition to your home. The lack of water in this nebulizing diffuser eliminates the risk of bacteria- and mold-holding particles growing in hard-to-clean areas. We placed this in many different areas of our main floor: A 200-square-foot living room, a 100-square-foot foyer, and a 150-square-foot office. Despite each room having 8-foot ceilings, we could smell the aroma across the entirety of our main floor (a big step up from a candle or plug-in scent). In terms of design, this diffuser has a modern, sleek, and futuristic appeal with just one small on/off button, but if that doesn't mesh with your home decor, it's tiny enough to hide it behind a lamp or picture frame.

Who It's For : One thing that stood out to us was how easy the diffuser was to assemble. Rather than having to count and pour in drops of oil, we just had to screw in the essential oil bottle into the spray head and press the power button to turn it on. The diffuser runs for two hours before automatically shutting itself off, a nice feature that allowed us to leave the house and come back to a nice scent without worry.

Our Trick : This diffuser dispenses scent for 10 seconds every 50 seconds, and it sounds like a small pump is running during those 10 seconds. The noise was pretty quiet nonetheless and we even found ourselves turning it on just to have some background noise throughout the day. The soft noise coupled with the fact that the mist was so fine it was practically invisible makes this a non-obtrusive product for any space in the home.

Type: Nebulizing| Materials: Not listed| Aromatherapy: Yes| Portable: No| Power: Corded electric| Run Time: 2 hours| Timer: 10 seconds off, 50 seconds on| Auto-Shut Off: Yes| Size: 2.83 x 5.19 inches

  • Ultrasonic diffusers : "They vibrate water and essential oil to create a fine mist that fills the room and gets inhaled into the lungs," says Dr. Raleigh Duncan, a board-certified chiropractor and the founder Clearlight . This type of diffuser can operate for several hours without needing to be refilled, and is great for bedrooms and living rooms because it can clear allergens in the air to help prevent allergies, says Dr. Duncan. "Ultrasonic diffusers are a very safe method, as oils are diluted and humidity is introduced into the room and lungs at the same time," says Dr. Duncan.
  • Evaporative diffusers: This type uses absorbent pads, reeds, terracotta, or other similar porous objects to diffuse essential oils into the air of small rooms, powder rooms, or entry halls. They are a much less intense option in both size and scent, so skip this type if you plan to use in a large, wide space.
  • Nebulizing diffusers: Largely considered the most popular option, despite the typically higher cost and frequent care needed. They "diffuse a pure, undiluted oil, meaning the oil remains concentrated in the air for a much longer period of time," says Dr. Duncan. "This is also a good delivery system for stress reduction and boosting the immune system, since nebulizing diffusers use a stream of air to break essential oils into micro-particles." Another plus: This diffuser type can usually fill a space quickly and therefore doesn't need to run long to be effective.
  • Heat diffusers : Small units that plug into a wall outlet or USB charger, they are designed to heat essential oils through an absorbent pad or other medium, explains Dr. Duncan. "These units take up little space and are great at relieving stress, creating ambience, and heightening the senses." One thing to note: Heat can break down essential oils and change the molecular structure, thereby lessening the healing effect, says Dr. Duncan, who recommends using a heat diffuser in smaller spaces or for “zone” diffusing in larger rooms.
  • Aromatherapy: "Aromatherapy taps into the powerful connection between our sense of smell and overall well-being," says Scolari. "At its core, aromatherapy utilizes essential oils (the concentrated essences extracted from plants) to promote physical, emotional, and mental health." As Scolari explains, inhaling essential oils through an oil diffuser allows their scent molecules to travel to the limbic system via the nasal passages. "This system influences a range of physiological and psychological responses, including mood and memory," she says.
  • Uncomplicated Settings + Features: While essential oils are not regulated by the FDA, using an oil diffuser can be an easy way to add a bit of relaxation, joy, and well-being into your daily life, especially if you're experiencing burnout. "Burnout is like hitting a wall emotionally and mentally after being under a lot of stress for too long," says Scolari. "It's more than just being tired after a busy week; it's feeling drained, down, and maybe disconnected from things you usually care about." This can make everyday stress feel bigger than they are, leading to feelings of anxiety because it feels more difficult to complete tasks. However, diffusing oils can help relax and recharge the brain to help you get back on track. "Setting up your diffuser can be your little signal to pause and breathe, helping to shoo away stress and anxiety," says Scolari. "Also, some scents are like cheerleaders for your mood and can help make those anxious feelings take a back seat."
  • Scent Reach : Be sure to look at the diffuser's tank capacity (if it's an ultrasonic unit), square footage capacity, and run time to determine if it'll effectively fill your space. Generally, the bigger the room, the more oil you'll need and the longer it'll take to achieve your desired scent concentration. Diffusing oils, especially lavender, can contribute to better sleep by creating a relaxing atmosphere in your bedroom and helping you wind down. "While the science on the effectiveness of essential oils for sleep remains somewhat uncertain, we know with much more certainty that relaxation before bedtime is essential to achieving healthy sleep," says Dr. Chester Wu , a psychiatry specialist double board-certified in psychiatry and sleep medicine.
  • Your Room Size : "Larger rooms are best served by ultrasonic diffusers while the simplicity of evaporative or heat diffusers are best for smaller rooms," says Dr. Duncan. Nebulizers are best thought of as therapeutic delivery devices: Sit close to it, get the required dosage, and turn the unit off. Diffusing essential oils can stimulate the pathway that connects the olfactory system with the brain's limbic system, which regulates emotion, says Dr. Wu. Using an oil diffuser can be a strategic way to influence our emotional state, helping you to potentially feel more relaxed.
  • Design: A diffuser's design is completely personal preference, but some options that are available are Wi-Fi capabilities, remote control, and faux flames. In any case, Dr. Duncan says that the button function should be obvious, accessible, and easy to understand—there should also be simple and intuitive timer buttons. Look for units that have a minimum of two speed diffusions and that are easy to fill (when it comes to ultrasonic diffusers). Some ultrasonics have rechargeable internal batteries, which make them convenient to place anywhere, Dr. Duncan adds.

What are the best oils to diffuse in your home?

For sleep, Dr. Wu recommends lavender oil , as it's "far more studied than any other oil, and so far, has the strongest evidence in support of its efficacy." Lavender oil also contains compounds like linalool and linalyl acetate, which have soothing properties. "These compounds help decrease anxiety and induce a sense of calm and tranquility, making lavender oil particularly effective in creating a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere," says Scolari. Other essential oils to look out for are frankincense to reduce inflammation, peppermint to energize, and eucalyptus for clear breathing and pain relief, says Dr. Duncan.

Sandalwood oil, which is commonly used in meditation and religious practices to promote mental clarity and focus, has a warm, earthy scent that can have a soothing effect on the brain's emotional center. "This can help aid in calming racing thoughts and bring about a sense of peacefulness and grounding," says Scolari. "Clary sage oil is a natural chill pill for your body's stress system because it talks directly to the hypothalamus, the part of your brain that decides how much cortisol (your body's stress hormone) to pump out."

Is diffusing essential oils safe for your lungs?

"Some individuals may experience respiratory irritation, especially with prolonged exposure," says Dr. Wu. He recommends using a diffuser for up to 60 minutes and keeping the environment well-ventilated.

Some essential oils can also be toxic to pets as well as children, who have a more sensitive respiratory system. By choosing oils that are safe for the entire household, like lavender, which Dr. Wu says has a better safety profile than others. If you have children in the home with asthma or other respiratory issues, consult your healthcare provider before using an oil diffuser.

How should I clean an oil diffuser?

Ultrasonic diffusers with a water tank can be cleaned by adding 10 drops or more (depending on size of basin) of white vinegar in fresh water and letting it run for a few minutes, says Dr. Duncan, Then just rinse the mixture out and let the basin dry.

To clean a nebulizing diffuser, add a teaspoon of rubbing alcohol to the reservoir and run for five to ten minutes. Heat and evaporative diffusers are best cleaned by using rubbing alcohol and cotton swabs to remove residue from the apparatus, dish, or vessel.

Benefits of Essential Oils

Though fragrances are always delightful, you might need a reminder of why essential oils are beneficial. Aromatherapy is helpful because of the positive memories and feelings we associate with certain scents—in this case, delivered through pure or blends of essential oils. While they are not solutions to ailments, they have the ability to uplift your mood to promote enhanced wellness. “Breathing in the essential oil vapor instantly changes our brain patterns and can help us feel calmer and more grounded,” Hope Gillerman , an aromatherapist and author of Essential Oils Every Day: Rituals and Remedies for Healing, Happiness, and Beauty previously told Vogue. To take part in this holistic treatment, select an oil suited for your concern. Think: clary sage or vetiver to ease anxiety, lavender or chamomile to aid sleep, and peppermint for energy and focus. Keep this in mind when selecting your diffuser. Below, we’ve curated this edit of the best essential oil diffusers to shop now—from Canopy, Saje, Vitruvi, and more.

Saje Aroma Om Diffuser

travel perfume diffuser

  • Why We Love It : Crafted from textured cement with an angled spout, the Saje Aroma Om diffuser is an excellent pickup. While it may appear an imaginative home accent, the device looks to diffuse your chosen essential oil blends throughout medium-sized chambers like your bedroom or home office.
  • More to Know : The Aroma Om features two mist settings (5 hours of continuous mist or 10 hours intermittent) and will automatically turn off when the water tank is empty. There’s even an LED light further set the mood. Getting started is as simple as pressing the on button.

Vitruvi Stone Ceramic Diffuser

travel perfume diffuser

  • Why We Love It : Vitruvi’s Stone Ceramic Diffuser can scent every corner of your home with one of the brother-and-sister-run brand’s pure essential oil blends, such as Pacific, a refreshing amyris, lavender, and eucalyptus aroma, or Legacy’s warm mix of rose, bergamot, and frankincense. The fact that it looks chic on any countertop is surely an added bonus.
  • More to Know : Available in 11 modern hues, this matte finish diffuser offers a four-hour and eight-hour run time, utilizing ultrasonic vibrations to mist your chosen scents through a medium-sized room. It turns off once the timer is done (or when the water turns out). Turn on its LED light to emit a candle-lit glow.

Loewe Home Scents Ivy Room Diffuser

travel perfume diffuser

NET-A-PORTER

  • Why We Love It : For Loewe’s debut home scents collection, designer Jonathan Anderson dreamed up a handful of vegetable-inspired rattan diffusers, which arrive in ribbed terra-cotta pots fit for display.
  • More to Know : The fragrances, created with Loewe’s perfumier Nuria Cruelles, are available in a variety of perfect-for-summer earthy scents like Tomato Leaves or Licorice which are diffused into your space through five rattan sticks.

Canopy Diffuser

travel perfume diffuser

  • Why We Love It : Oddly, one of the most frustrating parts of using a diffuser is maintaining its water tank. Whether you fear bacteria growth in traditional models or would rather not refill each day, consider Canopy’s waterless device your best bet. Did we mention it’s portable and mist-free, too?
  • More to Know : With six vibrant shades to choose from, this compact diffuser makes it easy to enjoy your favorite home scents in smaller spaces of around 400 square feet. Without water, this evaporates your oils directly. Just place about five drops onto the puck (located at the top of the device), choose from three fan speeds (low, medium, and high) and you’re all set to enjoy your aromas.

Diptyque Electric Diffuser

travel perfume diffuser

Diptyque Un Air de Diptyque Electric Diffuser

BERGDORF GOODMAN

  • Why We Love It : Diptyque may be best known for its intoxicating candles, but its diffuser is nothing to sniff at. At first glance, one might not even expect the ceramic model to mist oils—meaning it doubles as home decor even when not in use.
  • More to Know : To use the electric objet , which runs on a one-hour cycle, just slide in one of the French fragrance house’s scented capsules. There are seven to choose from—including, of course, the iconic Baies and Figuier—but we suggest snagging them all. Each capsule can be used for up to three months or 40 hours continuously. Tap the button at the top to get started.

Jo Malone London Lime Basil & Mandarin Diffuser

travel perfume diffuser

Jo Malone London Lime Basil & Mandarin Scent Surround Diffuser

SAKS FIFTH AVENUE

  • Why We Love It : Available in seven scents, Jo Malone London’s sleek silver-capped diffuser is a favorite of It Brits Karen Elson and Poppy Delevingne , who are partial to Red Roses and Peony and Blush Suede , respectively.
  • More to Know : For summer, we’d reach for this scent which continuously emits notes of mandarin, basil, white thyme, and lime through the included reeds. According to the brand, the fragrance has a three to four-month lifespan.

Alo Aura Diffuser

travel perfume diffuser

Even more: the device boasts quiet mists for up to 22 hours across larger rooms of 700 square feet, making it a thoughtful addition to your workout room or sauna.

A Vogue editor favorite, the diffuser features two-speed settings, three timer settings, and a convenient night light to customize your aromatherapy treatment. Pair the Aura Diffuser with one of Alo’s essential oil blends .

Maison Margiela Replica Lazy Sunday Morning Diffuser

travel perfume diffuser

  • More to Know : Maison Margiela’s fresh, floral Lazy Sunday Morning scent, which smells of pear, iris, and white musk accord, can be a great addition to any home. Allow for the reed sticks to soak in the perfume concentrate for five to six hours. Then, flip the sticks over to continuously diffuse the scent for four months.

Pura Smart Fragrance Diffuser

travel perfume diffuser

  • Why We Love It : This Pura diffuser is as intelligent—and handy—as they come. Not only is it a salve for those who do not want to clutter a tabletop with a traditional model (the Smart Fragrance Diffuser plugs into an outlet!), it can also be controlled from your phone.
  • More to Know : Take your picks of scents from Nest New York, Apotheke, and more from Pura’s fragrance marketplace and simply insert them into the device. Then, using the app, you can adjust the fragrance intensity or set a schedule to your liking.

Seasons Aero SM Portable Waterless Diffuser

travel perfume diffuser

  • Why We Love It : The Seasons Aero SM diffuser manages to disperse essential oils through larger areas ( up to 1,200 square feet) without water or heat. That itself is worth your buy, if its sleek design wasn’t alluring enough.
  • More to Know : Despite its innovative technology, it’s quite easy to use. Just insert an essential oil bottle (or pour the oil into the chamber directly), then choose between three intermittent mist times and two intensity settings. On a full charge, Aero should last for up to 15 hours.

Objecto A2 Aroma Diffuser

travel perfume diffuser

  • Why We Love It : At first glance, Objecto’s Aroma Diffuser may appear to be only a striking interior accent—that is, until your nose perks up. Designed in New York City’s Flatiron District, the stylish option silently releases inviting scents, making it a perfect addition to any home.
  • More to Know : Ideal for a bedroom or office, the Objecto A2 offers a continuous or intermittent mist setting and a convenient night light. To get started, fill the tank with water and add up to three drops of your chosen essential oil.

Campo Travel Ultrasonic Essential Oil Diffuser

travel perfume diffuser

  • Why We Love It : Sleek and travel-friendly, this Campo diffuser moves where you do. Store it in your carry-on to feel at home even or vacation or place it in your car’s cupholder to experience essential oils virtually anywhere.
  • More to Know : To use, simply add water plus up to ten drops of your essential oils, then plug the device into any USB port. In its continuous mode, the mist should last for three hours, though there is an automatic shut-off feature.

Frama Be My Guest Edition From Soil To Form Room Diffuser

travel perfume diffuser

Frama Be My Guest Edition From Soil To Form 1917 Diffuser

  • Why We Love It : Introduce your home to an exciting take on a classic diffuser, with these spheres by Frama in collaboration with Seoul-based creative branding studio Be My Guest. Made of Korean soil, each sphere not only releases scents but helps purify and balance surrounding air.
  • More to Know : To disperse the fragrance, this works by placing several drops of the featured Frama oil (which smells of bergamot, lilac, and patchouli) or your favorite scent to the soil spheres.

Curves By Sean Brown Stone Diffuser

travel perfume diffuser

  • Why We Love It : Optimal for closets or small spaces is this stone diffuser from Sean Brown ’s contemporary home decor collection. And so, simply hang this on let’s say a door handle to release the scents of your chosen essential oils.
  • More to Know : The featured scent called Faiyum, smells of geranium, fig, and jasmine, though you can use your own oil too. Place five or more drops directly onto the diffuser and hang wherever you’d like.

Neom Wellbeing Pod Mini Essential Oil Diffuser

travel perfume diffuser

  • Why We Love It : Don’t think the aromatherapy benefits of essential oils are reserved for the larger areas of the home. Neom’s mini model makes it easy to fill your car or bathroom with essential oils in place of, say, a scented candle or home fragrance.
  • More to Know : The device uses a cold diffusion technology to transform your oils into an ultra-fine vapor sans water and heat for up to 50 hours. What’s more, this is rechargeable (with a USB cable), and features three intensity settings.

Best basic: InnoGear Aromatherapy 400ml 11. How to choose 12. How we test

Every home has a signature scent. Four months ago, I took mine into my own hands. Armed with the best essential oil diffusers on the market, I placed one in each room of my home and have been testing them ever since.

Before I was a product tester, I trained as a Master Perfumer for a luxury perfume and candle company, so I have a lot of experience with home scents. I normally use my picks of the best candles and reed diffusers to scent my space, but I wanted to turn my expertise to essential oil diffusers. They are lower maintenance, tidier, and more consistent. They put out gorgeous scent without you having to lift a finger. You don't need to keep a close eye on them and no there's tedious maintenance like trimming a wick or rotating the reeds. If you're a busy person, essential oil diffusers could be the solution you need to fragrance every room in your home.

Plenty of people make essential oil diffusers, but only a few are worth the investment. I tested lots of models which didn't make this list. Those which did are exceptional: they subtly diffuse scent into every room. Whether you're looking for bold, room-filling fragrances or more delicate diffusers, I've found the only options worth considering.

The quick list

Here are the top notes for these essential oil diffusers. I'll give you more detail about them further down.

The White Company Ceramic Textured Diffuser

The best everyday

This clever hydration diffuser releases fresh aromas for two, eight, or sixteen hours. The classic design is subtle, and the scents are too.

Bamford Strato

The best luxury

Crafted from ceramic and recycled plastic, the Strato is super subtle and ultra-luxurious. It works for up to twelve hours and comes with a low-level LED light — but it's expensive.

Vitruvi Stone

The best for small rooms

This sleek and stylish diffuser doesn't quite have the power for large rooms, but that makes it perfect for small spaces. The porcelain shell and neutral colorways are stunning. The price tag is a little less appealing.

Alo Aura

The best for large rooms

This humidifier-diffuser combo can change the atmosphere in your driest rooms. It's quiet and efficient, but quite a lot of maintenance (and large too).

Aroma 360 Wireless Pro

The best for pet homes

Cordless and remote controlled, this subtle tower diffuses distinct scent into any room. It's easy to use and effective across a range of strengths, but might be a bit too strong for some.

Aromatech aromini in black

The best wireless

Using cold-air diffusion, the Aromini diffuses fragrance without water, alcohol, heat, or any wires. It easily covers up to 1,000 sq ft of room, but it comes with a hefty price tag .

Asakuki Portable

The best portable

The Asakuki cuts the cord on plug-ins, offering 100 ml of subtle, quiet freshness. It's ceramic coated and extremely beautiful, but lacks a little power. It's also expensive for its size.

InnoGear Aromatherapy

The best LED

With a range LED colors and excellent pricepoint InnoGear offers value without much compromise. The colors make great night lights, but might be a little gaudy for some.

Temu essential oil diffuser

The best basic

If you don't mind about automatic timers and motion sensors, get the InnoGear. You get exactly what you pay for, but with a few extra essential oils thrown in for good measure.

The best everyday essential oil diffuser

1. the white company motion ceramic textured.

Our expert review:

Specifications

Reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

✅ You want an automatic diffuser:  this has reliable pre-sets ✅ You'll use this 24/7:  it has a night and day mode ✅ You use pure essential oils:  this is water-free

Don't buy it if:

❌ You're not good with cleaning:  this is tricky to keep looking fresh ❌ You're short on plugs:  this occupies a socket ❌  You want color options:  this is only in white

The bottom line

🔎  The White Company Motion Sensor: once this is plugged in, it has a day and night mode, diffusing to suit your movements. It's a little limited position-wise though.

The White Company's Ceramic Textured Diffuser is low maintenance. Once you've added 20 drops of essential oil and some water into the diffuser you can leave it for at least six weeks (or until the water level runs low), whilst it diffuses subtle scent into your home.

Whether you opt for the two, eight, or sixteen hour settings, the diffuser reliably releases delicate fragrance levels into the room. Most people recommend adding 20 drops to your water reservoir. but I found that to be a) too powerful and b) wasteful — if you buy good quality essential oils, you shouldn't need more than seven drops.

This is all dependent on how much essential oil you add to your water level, of course, but most people recommend 20 drops. but I found that to be a) too powerful and b) wasteful — if you buy good quality essential oils , you shouldn't need more than seven drops.

As a smaller, water-based diffuser, I found that this worked best in my bedroom and entryway. The bathroom doesn't have suitable plugs and my kitchen and lounge are a little too big for the diffuser to produce anything notable. A few drops of lavender or eucalyptus oil is all you need for a beautifully scented sleep haven.

The biggest limitation of The White Company's diffuser is that you're limited in where you can place this: it has to always be near a outlet. There's always a battle for outlets in my house, so adding this into the mix became a little frustrating.

It's also worth noting that, whilst the textured ceramic looks beautiful, it's a little trickier to clean. Paired with a water reservoir that needs to be regularly refreshed, and anyone who isn't a thorough cleaner might end up with a slightly grubby looking diffuser.

The best luxury essential oil diffuser

2. bamford strato.

✅ You want atmosphere:  this has a low-level LED ✅ You'll move this around:  it's wireless ✅ You use pure essential oils:  this is water-free

❌ You have large rooms:  this is better in cozy spaces ❌ Your use non-pure oils:  this is better with essentials ❌  You want color options:  this is very simple

🔎  Bamford Strato: waterless and wireless, this can be moved through your home with ease. It's simple, clean, and impossible to fault.

Bamford's compact and portable atomiser is perfect for modern homes. The clean and simple aesthetics will blend seamlessly into any interior. Not only does it look beautiful, it's crafted from ceramic and recycled plastic, so you know it's doing beautiful things for the planet, too.

The diffuser uses waterless technology and pure essential oils to release a pure, clean scent into your home. I kept mine away from the wall, just in case of any oil marks, but there weren't any.

I ran mine for ten minutes whenever I felt the room needed a refresh. That was more than enough for my high-ceiling, medium-sized apartment to smell like a spa throughout. Bamford says not to run it for any longer than twenty minutes at a time anyway; it's not needed.

There are three interval settings, each offering distinct strength and diffusion speeds. When you want a stronger scent, you can opt for the highest power option, but I found this a little overwhelming, even with delicate floral and citrus oils . If you're in a low-lit room, the Strato has a soft LED light. It's not bright and garish like other models, perfect for the evenings.

The only issue I have with the Strato is that slotting and lining-up the diffuser oil into the perfect position can take a little bit of work. Thankfully, you won't need to do this often. It's also worth noting that this is more expensive than other models.

The best essential oil diffuser for small homes

3. vitruvi stone.

✅ You have small rooms:  this is petite and subtle ✅ You want a design piece:  this looks beautiful ✅ You use LEDs:  this has a 'soft glow' option

❌ You want a low-maintenance option:  the water reservoir needs refilling ❌ Your rooms are all big:  this diffuses subtle scent ❌  You're on a budget:  this is expensive

🔎  Vitruvi Stone Diffuser: perfect for smaller rooms and subtle scenting, the Vitruvi's matte, ceramic finish is a style piece. However, it's not strong enough for big rooms or pet smells.

This essential oil diffuser is so beautiful that it's easy to forget that it's functional, too. The images online only go a short way towards showing off just how stunning the matte ceramic finish of the Vitruvi stone diffuser is. You can opt for the suede, teracotta, or white colorway. My personal favorite is teracotta, but they all look equally luxurious. Even the packaging is beautiful, so if you need a good option for gifting, this premium product is the one to choose.

The Vitruvi, unlike lots of diffusers on this list, uses a reservoir and water to scent your space. The smaller reservoir sits in a sealed part of the diffuser, which helps to prevent any leaks or spillage when moving the Vitruvi around. Vitruvi recommends adding 20 drops of essential oil to the reservoir, but do so with caution. I buy high-quality essential oils and only needed to use about 11. If you opt for a lighter, citrus fragrance, you might need more. It's something to experiment with.

There are plenty of other well-considered features, including a four and eight hour timer and LED light. The timer settings are reliable, but subtle. You'll have to add more essential oil if you have pets, for example, because the fragrance isn't diffused very frequently. You also have to control these setting using buttons at the back of the diffuser. These are close to the power cord and a little tricky to reach. Most other expensive models have remote controls, so, if this is a dealbreaker, look at AromaTech and Aroma 360's diffusers.

Another consideration to take into account is that this is a water-based diffuser. By nature, it is higher maintenance, as the reservoir could be a breeding ground for microbes if not properly cleaned. When running water through the diffuser, the Vitruvi makes a dripping noise. Whilst some people found this quite calming, others complained that it was off-putting. It's also worth noting that the matte, textured ceramic exterior collects fluff and can be tricky to get thoroughly clean.

The best essential oil diffuser for large homes

4. alo aura diffuser.

✅ You need humidity:  this is a water diffuser ✅ You have big rooms: this is strong ✅ You need longevity:  this works for 22 hours with auto shut-off

❌ You're bad with maintenance:  the water need refilling ❌ You don't need humidity: this will be overkill ❌  You need silence:  this makes a bit of noise

🔎  Alo Aura Diffuser: scenting your room, whilst filling it with a cool mist, the Aura is perfect for yogi spaces. It's higher maintenance, but worth it for some.

The trend for essential oil diffusers has mostly moved away from heat and water, but Alo has stuck with a classic design. Offering a diffuser-humidifier combo, the Aura promises to 'transform your space, mind, body, and spirit with cool mist'. I have to admit it: when I had this in my lounge, it felt like a yoga studio.

Normally, I don't like the sound of water-based diffusers releasing scent. However, when it came from the Aura's (antimicrobial) water tank, there was something quite calming about the gentle spray sound. I found myself experimenting with essential oils, testing peppermint and sage , cultivating an invigorating atmosphere in my home. It might have been subconscious, but I felt like the air in my room was more clearer and nicer to breath.

The mist runs for 22 hours with an automatic shut off. This means that it'll keep going throughout the night. If you're a light sleeper, that calming noise that I quite liked will bug you to no end. It's also worth stating the obvious: this uses water, so you need to keep it topped up. Aside from that, the running is easy. I added 30 drops of essential oil and could increase or decrease that ratio depending on how much scent I wanted. That's more than most other diffusers, but this didn't struggle to scent rooms with ceilings 8 feet high. I tested it out in a large room, which our family dog spends a lot of time in. Using a sandalwood, oud, and rose blend, I out-scented our dog. It was remarkable.

Unlike many modern diffusers, this needs to stay plugged in. It's also quite bulky, so finding a space where it can be hidden and near a plug can prove tricky for some households.

The best essential oil diffuser for homes with pets

5. aroma360 wireless pro scent diffuser.

✅ You have big rooms:  this can diffuse a lot of fragrance ✅ You'll move this around:  it's cord-free ✅ You have small children:  this is safe for children and pets

❌ You like to buy your own oils:  this is only compatible with Aroma360 scents ❌ Your rooms are all small:  this might be too powerful ❌  You're on a budget:  this is expensive

🔎  Aroma360 Wireless Pro: this sleek and stylish tower is available in a range of colors. It's really powerful — some might say too powerful — so perfect for large homes.

There's no escaping it, the Aroma360 Wireless Pro is expensive. However, if you have pets and you've saved up the money to treat your home, I think it's worth it.

The matte, brushed steel finish of the Wireless Pro looks and feels premium. If you can remember to keep the base station plugged in for a few hours, you'll be able to maximise on the wireless diffusion centre. This means the Wireless Pro can sit anywhere in your home.

It's a smart piece of technology that would look particularly at home in modern interiors. I tested one in black and enjoyed placing it in different rooms. It's quiet, remote controlled, safe to have around children and dogs. I very quickly forgot it was there, or at least I would have if the scent it produced wasn't so strong.

I first tested the 'low' setting, which didn't do much. You'll need to have this running on medium or high, which, within a few bursts will be too much for your room. In some ways, this is brilliant. You don't need to use much essential oil to have a properly scented room. In other ways, this is frustrating. My rooms were too fragrant if I left this running for even an hour.

After seeing that this was perhaps the strongest diffuser I tested, I thought I would really put it on trial. We have a large family dog, who, much as I love her, smells. I put this in the lounge with her and after a day, her scent was almost completely masked with the sandalwood blend I had chosen. She didn't like the tower (I think the mist was a bit scary for her), but it made the room smell lovely.

Before buying this, it's worth noting that the Wireless Pro is only compatible with Aroma360's ProPod bottles , so you need to buy from the brand. They have an extensive range of good, quality oils, but this does feel a little limiting.

The best wireless essential oil diffuser

6. aromatech aromini.

✅ You are short on space:  this is small ✅ You have pets: this is strong ✅ You'll move this around:  it's bluetooth controlled

❌ You're sensitive to smells:  this is strong ❌ You'll use this in a studio: it makes some noise ❌  You'll forget to charge it:  this can run out of battery

🔎  AromaTech Aromini: mini but mighty, this doesn't to diffusion by halves. It's ultra-strong, super-small, and will burn through your essential oils.

The AroMini is adorable. Expensive, but adorable. I tested this in my urban apartment and it was one of the best luxury options available. The diffuser comes in black, gold, rose gold, or stainless steel brushed finishes. Whether you place it on the mantle, on a bookshelf, or in the corner, it stands in a subtle state-of-the-art way. I like it a lot.

The Bluetooth remote and connectivity meant I could control this from any position in the room. This ended up being quite useful, because the AroMini was constant knocked over when it was on the floor. It's quite vulnerable and unstable, so put it high up and out of danger.

Even though this is small, it didn't struggle to scent the house. I started on the 'low' setting, which might as well not exist. After days of it running on low, I switched to medium and could instantly smell the essential oils. It's quite the jump between stages. The medium setting is more like strong and the strong setting is even stronger (too much for most people). Even on 'medium' the AroMini will burn through a 10ml essential oil bottle in 24 hours. Luckily, there's a 120 ml slot, which saves you doing a daily re-fill.

It's worth noting that AromaTech has some excellent essential oils . This is important, because the AroMini is exclusively compatible with them. You can't buy your own, which is a shame, especially if you like to get creative with your fragrances.

You'll be pleased to know that this uses cold-air diffusion technology, rather than water or heat. In theory, this means that it can sit up against walls and furniture without doing any damage. I kept mine at a precautionary distance and didn't notice any discoloration on the walls. Keep it on rotation though. After time, it will mark. I would also steer clear of the bedroom: this claims to be silent, but I can hear every time it diffuses. The sound is like a high pitched whistle. It doesn't matter to me, but if you're trying to create a calming sleep space, you'll need a different model.

The best LED essential oil diffuser

7. asakuki portable.

✅ You want LEDs:  this has 7 color options ✅ You want a portable diffuser:  this is cordless ✅ You want simplicity:  it's easy to control

❌ You want a premium machine:  this feels cheap ❌ You don't want to use water:  this has a reservoir ❌  You're short on essential oils:  this burns through them

🔎  Asakuki Portable: the small and stylish design makes this perfect for bedrooms and bathrooms. It's higher maintenance than most models and uses a lot of essential oils.

The Asakuki makes big promises: it's an easy to use, LED, portable diffuser. It's true, the Asakuki is incredibly straightforward. Once plugged in, all you have to do is add water to the reservoir, as well as a few drops of essential oil, and it will start scenting your room. The LED options cover seven vibrant colors, which are perfect if you want your diffuser to 'pop' in your room. A note for monochrome homes: this selection can look a little gaudy.

The overall design is neat and versatile, and I could imagine it looking good in a range of interiors. If you can't imagine it in your home, check out the colorways: you can choose anything an all-white design to a dark brown one.

When working, this is completely silent: a first for the water-based diffusers I tested. The power and timer were easy to adjust, too. I found that this generally uses more water than average. I had mine on the low setting and needed to re-fill it almost every day. This meant that I used up a lot of essential oils and my room smelt stronger than I would have liked.

Whilst it is portable, you'll need to keep the Asakuki near an outlet. Homes without lots of sockets will quickly find this frustrating, as it significantly limits where you place your diffuser. If you want it on a bookshelf, it's hard to keep power cords out of the way. If you want it on the mantle, there will be a trail danging off.

I'd also caution that, whilst this looks lovely, it does feel a little cheap. The top doesn't close with a satisfying click and can be difficult to line up with the control buttons. Water-based diffusers are great for humidity in rooms, but the reservoirs are high maintenance. This one often gets condensation around it, so can drip and create mess when re-filling.

The best budget essential oil diffuser

8. innogear essential oil diffuser.

✅ You have small rooms:  this is small ✅ You want humidity:  this has a humidify setting ✅ You use LEDs:  this has seven color options

❌ You want a low-maintenance option:  the water reservoir needs refilling ❌ You want luxury:  this feels cheap ❌  You want subtlety:  this is bright and bold

🔎  InnoGear Essential Oil Diffuser : big on aesthetics and small on price, the InnoGear is a brilliant option for beginners. The 7 LED settings are fun, but a little tacky.

InnoGear specialise in affordable, essential oil diffusers. I've tried a number of different models from their range and, I have to say, they're all brilliant basics. Whilst you'll find other brands making LED diffusers, you won't find many with the same color options as InnoGear's. This offers 7 different light options and a range of base hues. Whilst this might not suit a Skandi-interior, it's perfect for adding a pop of color into bright rooms. Some people even use theirs as a night light.

This is generous for a $20 diffuser. I got second and third opinions on how premium it looked and everyone agreed that it looks like it should cost more than $20, but not quite as premium as the Bamford diffuser, for example.

It sits subtly in any room. As quite a small diffuser, I'd recommend it for bedrooms and offices, rather than lounges and bathrooms. Note: this needs to be plugged in, so wherever you put it, you will need to be near a socket.

I tested the two misting modes: there's an intermittent setting which dispenses evert thirty seconds, or a continuous mode which works for up to four hours (or until the water runs out). Neither of these are subtle, just like the LED lights. They're great if you want a strong scent in your room, but they work quickly and intensely. I started with ten drops of essential oil in the 100ml reservoir, but I'd recommend cutting back to just one or two drops. You don't need any more: it will waste your essential oils and over-fragrance your room.

The best basic essential oil diffuser

9. innogear portable.

✅ You have big rooms:  this is strong ✅ This is your first diffuser:  it comes with all the components you need ✅ You want humidity:  this is water-based

❌ You want a low-maintenance option:  the water reservoir needs refilling ❌ Your rooms are small:  this is powerful ❌  You have a modern interior:  the wooden finish is rustic

🔎  InnoGear Aromatherapy 400ml : the perfect investment for beginners, this covers the basics, but isn't a premium model. It might not last you long.

This is the beginner's toolkit for essential oil diffusers. The 400ml wood-style diffuser comes with a set of ten essential oils. This means you can start diffusing immediately.

Normally, when a brand adds essential oils into a package, I'm skeptical. Whilst these weren't the most premium the market has to offer, they were good. They scented my room, which has 8ft ceilings, really well. In fact, I hadn't even set the diffuser running and the room started smelling beautiful. I used all four timer settings (continuous, one hour, three hours, and six hours). Continuous is really overwhelming. It's far too strong. I'd recommend using ten drops of essential oil in the 400ml reservoir and running the diffuser for just the hour. That will give any room plenty of scent. If you choose the 'weak' mode, you might as well not use the diffuser. It's largely pointless. The strong setting, as I've mentioned takes things much further.

The wood finish is suited to more rustic aesthetics. As with InnoGear's other diffuser, it feels more premium than it actually is, which is great if you're shopping on a budget.

This is a plug-in, water-based diffuser. Some people like the idea of extra humidity in a room, but others find water reservoirs higher-maintenance. This collects condensation, which can get a little messy when re-filling comes around. Being limited to plug sockets also makes it difficult to place the InnoGear in your home. You'll need to find a position where you can conceal the wire if you want a really polished look.

How we tested these essential oil diffusers

At Homes & Gardens we take our tests seriously. That's why I make sure to test every product before we recommend them to you. I took these diffusers into my home  and ran them through a series of tests to help them decide which are the best essential oil diffusers on the market.

I make notes on the scent, time how long it lasts, and measure how far the scent throws across the room. I also assess more than just performance: if a product is nicely packaged or difficult to clean, I'll make sure to let you know about it. Similarly, if there are special features, I'll test them out to see if they're genuinely good or gimmicks. If you'd like to find our more, you can visit our dedicated page for how we test .

How to choose the best essential oil diffuser for you

Essential oil diffusers come in all shapes and sizes, but these suit different homes perfectly. These are they key features to consider:

Type There are a few different types of essential oil diffusers, but these are the main ones to know about. Nebulizing, ultrasonic, heat, and evaporative. Nebulizing diffusers use pressurized air to make the essential oils into a fine mist; ultrasonic diffusers use ultrasonic waves to disperse oil into the air; heat diffusers, use, rather obviously heat; and evaporative diffusers use water. Each method has pros and cons, which depend on your needs as to which is best.

Size The smallest essential oil diffuser I would buy is 100ml or one with a 15ml slot for pure essential oil. These will more than cover enough space for a small room. There are essential oil diffusers available for up to 500ml, which are great if you won't move them and have a large space to scent, but much bigger and they'll become inconvenient.

Cost You can pick up a decent diffuser for $20, but these will feel a little cheap. The ones in this buying guide go up above $200, which are great if they cater specifically to your needs (Bluetooth, wireless, remote controlled, voice sensitive), but they might be overkill for some.

Features Diffusers offer lots of niche features, so it's important to know what you want. Some have LED lights, motion sensitive features, night modes, and timers. When and how you'll use your diffuser will affect which features you prioritize (and are willing to pay for).

14 Best Essential Oil Diffusers to Make Your Home More Aromatherapeutic

By Maria Cassano and Sarah Madaus

Best Essential Oil Diffuser a collage of Saje Aromatherapy Associates and InnoGear diffusers on a red background

There are plenty of ways to scent your home , but some methods are easier — and safer — than others. Finding the best essential oil diffuser is not just a design trend, but a wellness one too. These diffusers disperse natural oils into the air — lavender, eucalyptus, whatever you like — which can help to freshen up a room and reduce feelings of anxiety.

To the latter point, according to scientific studies, some essential oils may have the ability to interact with the brain and the nervous system to impact mood and health, which is hugely important for times when we're spending the majority of our time indoors. One of the easiest (and most pleasant) ways to achieve these benefits is through aromatherapy, where these concentrated oils are breathed in, allowing them to stimulate the olfactory system in the brain. What's more, even if you don't see any magical healing effects from your diffuser, it's still going to make your home smell sublime.

Our Top Picks:

  • Best Overall: Campo Ultrasonic Essential Oil Diffuser , $108
  • Best Portable: Vitruvi Move Diffuser , $182
  • Best Design-Forward: Saje Natural Wellness Aroma (Be) Free , $124
  • Best Stone Diffuser: InnoGear Ceramic Essential Oil Diffuser , $40
  • Best Technology: Aromatherapy Associates The Atomiser , $170
  • Best for Travel: HoMedics Connect Ultrasonic Aroma Diffuser , $61
  • Best LED Diffuser: Serene House Astro Diffuser, $40
  • Best for Kids: LittleHippo Wispi , $70

These amazing aromatherapy diffusers require only some water and a few drops of your favorite blend to turn your home or office into a stress-relieving oasis — just make sure you pick up some pure essential oils while you're at it. According to New York City-based acupuncturist, Mila Mintsis, you can tell a brand sells high-quality essential oils if it specifically says it's considered safe for internal consumption. "It will usually say on the bottle or company's website, and in this case, you know for a fact that the company guarantees purity and high quality of its oils," she previously told Allure .

Although you won't be putting the essential oils directly on your skin when you're using them in a diffuser, it's still important to handle them correctly when pouring them into your chosen device. "Phototoxic reactions can be pretty nasty, regardless of whether you have sensitive skin," Robert Tisserand , an essential oil educator, previously told Allure . Among the most phototoxic essential oils that you should be very careful to keep off of your skin are bergamot, lemon, and lime. Cinnamon, clove, lemongrass, cassia, black pepper, and wintergreen all have the potential to irritate skin as well.

Now that you're all caught up, it's time to pick your perfect essential oil diffuser. Below are our current favorites — we know you'll find your favorite here, too. We found some for large spaces and small rooms, options with mood lights, others with different mist modes, and more to suit your specific needs.

Nude pink Neom Wellbeing Pod Mini Essential Oil Diffuser on white background

Best Personal Diffuser: Neom Wellbeing Pod Mini Essential Oil Diffuser

Why It's Worth It: If you've ever smelled a NEOM candle, you know they're about as potent as candles can get. In fact, the brand puts as much essential oils as they can into each of their products, giving you the most immersive aromatherapy experience. This diffuser allows you to fill your room with those same scents—sans flames.

White InnoGear Ceramic Essential Oil Diffuser on white background

Best Stone Diffuser: InnoGear Ceramic Essential Oil Diffuser

Why It's Worth It: Sometimes, the best diffuser is the simplest one. This ceramic, affordable pick from Amazon has minimal features and a simple two-button interface that anyone can get the hang of quickly. It offers two misting modes: intermittent and continuous mist, and the long duration means you can sleep through the night without the water tank running low.

Editor Tip: This is also one of the quietest picks on our list; you'll barely even notice that it's running. And the chimney design, which is common among water tank diffusers, makes sure that your belongings won't get damp from the mist.

Product Specs: Up to 10-hour run-time, automatic shutoff, optional LED light, corded

Canopy Aroma Diffuser Starter Set white diffuser with green top and black bottle of Unwind essential oil on white background

Best Bedside Diffuser: Canopy Aroma Diffuser Starter Set

Canopy (Diffuser Only)

Violet Grey

Thirteen Lune

Why It's Worth It: Here's a totally waterless diffuser that, instead of the usual H2O, relies on a fan to diffuse your essential oils. You can choose from three fan speeds (which also give off a relaxing hum), and it's powered by a USB-C cord. The Aroma is available in a few different hues, like grey, cream, and jade.

Editor Tip: With this diffuser, you can choose two different ways to fill your space with fragrance. Put a few drops of your chosen oils on the diffuser puck, which is placed on top and best for short-term scent. You can also use the internal diffuser well, which gradually diffuses your oil over the course of several hours.

Product Specs: 3 fan speeds, two diffusion modes, waterless design, corded

Aromatherapy Associates The Atomiser tall white trapezoid diffuser on white background

Aromatherapy Associates

Best Technology: Aromatherapy Associates The Atomiser

Net-a-Porter

Why It's Worth It: We've loved Aromatherapy Associates' fragrant body-care products for as long as we can remember, but one of the brand's best products is intended more for your mood than your skin. The Atomiser is a simple yet stunning ceramic diffuser that skips the water and lets you use less of your favorite essential oil — and lets you switch up the one you're using extra easily — by using an air-compression technology that fills your space for up to three hours.

Editor Tip: Why waterless? Well, it makes the tool easier to clean (mold and mildew, who?), less messy to operate (spills? never heard of them), and a more pure aromatherapy experience.

Product Specs: Up to 3-hour run-time, automatic shutoff, cordless, optional LED light

LittleHippo Wispi teal and white bear shaped diffusers on white background

LittleHippo

Best for Kids of All Ages: LittleHippo Wispi

Why It's Worth It: Is the LittleHippo Wispi technically intended for children? Absolutely. Is it so cute that you're going to want to prominently display it in decidedly non-child areas of your home? Absolutely

Editor Tip: In addition to an oil tray compartment that makes it easy to switch out the essential oil of your choice, it also serves as a muticolor nightlight and, better yet, a humidifier with three mist levels, automatic detection of the room's humidity, and up to 12 hours of use.

Product Specs: Up to 15-hour run-time, automatic shutoff, corded, 7 nightlight colors

Serene House Astro Diffuser white and light wood diffuser on white background

Serene House

Best LED Diffuser: Serene House Astro Diffuser

Why It's Worth It: Serene House's Astro Diffuser offers three different timer settings, so go ahead and set this baby to run for 120 minutes if you tend to be restless at bedtime. The diffuser runs through seven shades of soothing LED light that gently glow through its frosted glass cover for an added chillout effect, and reviewers report that it produces a satisfyingly strong amount of steam for its small stature.

Editor Tip: Got a larger space? Choose from two sizes with different water capacities (90 and 130ml) so you can smell your favorite oil blends throughout your home.

Product Specs: 150 sq. ft. coverage, 4-8 hour run-time, automatic shutoff, corded, 7 LED light colors

Urpower Essential Oil Diffuser light wood diffuser on white background

Best Budget: Urpower Essential Oil Diffuser

Why It's Worth It: Another best-seller in its category, Urpower's Essential Oil Diffuser has a 130-milliliter tank that's recommended for small spaces (up to 215 square feet). It makes virtually zero noise while operating, and it's available in either black or brown wood grain. Unlike others, the color-changing light comes from inside and shines out the top for a sleek, modern look.

Editor Tip: We're partial to the wood finish, which cozies up any room, but there are other solid and transparent colors to choose from too. And, for the moments you just need some humidity, you can turn this (and others on this list) into a humidifier by simply not adding essential oils to the water tank.

Product Specs: 215 sq. ft. coverage, up to 6-hour run-time, corded, optional LED light

Asakuki Premium Essential Oil Diffuser squat cylinder white and wood diffuser on white background

Best for Large Spaces: Asakuki Premium Essential Oil Diffuser

Why It's Worth It: The most frequent complaint about essential oil diffusers is how small they are; most can only run for a few hours and fill a 200-square foot space with scent. Asakuki's Premium Essential Oil Diffuser changes all that with a 700-milliliter tank that holds over twice as much water as most other models, making it capable of filling a living room or a yoga studio — or simply replacing your winter humidifier.

Editor Tip: This one also comes with a convenient remote control that allows you to control the mist setting, LED light color, timer, and more from across the room.

Product Specs: 500 sq. ft. coverage, 18-hour run-time, automatic shutoff, optional LED light, remote control

HoMedics Connect Ultrasonic Aroma Diffuser tall white diffuser on white background

Best for Travel: HoMedics Connect Ultrasonic Aroma Diffuser

Why It's Worth It: The Homedics Connect Ultrasonic Aroma Diffuser isn't your average, clunky diffuser. That's because this compact, travel-friendly device shoots up to six hours of dry air-alleviating hydration and the built-in light changes colors. It even comes with three samples of essential oil blends to kick off your journey.

Editor Tip: Not only is this pick cordless, but it's small enough to pack in a carry-on and take with you on long-haul travels, either for portable humidity or aromatherapy.

Product Specs: 13-hour run-time, cordless, optional LED light

Stadler Form Jasmine Aroma Diffuser rounded black diffuser on white background

Stadler Form

Best Run-Time: Stadler Form Jasmine Aroma Diffuser

Editor Tip: Its long-running time of 24 hours and low maintenance makes it ideal for both home and office, not to mention it has multiple mist-interval settings and a safety shut-off feature.

Product Specs: 540 sq. ft. coverage, 24-hour run time, automatic shutoff, corded

AromaTech AromaDream Diffuser

Chic design

Pairs with Bluetooth connectivity and smartphone apps

No-water operation means it lasts longer between refills

Not compatible with all essential oils

Some features can only be controlled in the app

This AromaTech nebulizing diffuser diffuses essential oils without water. To use it, simply twist off the top and unclick the interior holder to place your preferred essential oil inside. The author of this guide, Jamie Allison Sanders, keeps this diffuser on her desk because of its unique, beautiful design.

It connects to an app that works with Apple iOS and Android devices; this is how you’ll control most of the features, like scent intensity and schedules. Mist comes out of the top and the globe lights up when in use.

The diffuser scents rooms up to 600 square feet in size, and it holds up to 60 milliliters of essential oil. Depending on how often you use it, one bottle of oil can last up to two months. Serene House Ranger Portable Ultrasonic USB Diffuser  »

Serene House Ranger Ultrasonic USB Diffuser

Compact and portable

Long runtime for its size

Quiet operation

Fewer features than other models

This Serene House essential oil diffuser may be small, but it’s mighty. Its compact, rectangular silhouette is easily portable, so you can move it around your house or even take it with you on your travels. To use, simply plug it in with the provided USB cord and turn it on with the discreet power button at the front.

Jamie Allison Sanders, the writer of this piece, owns this essential oil diffuser and can personally speak to its powerful diffusion capabilities. It releases a generous amount of mist for a diffuser of its size, and its scent throw is also impressive, easily spreading scent throughout a 12 ft. x 15 ft. space. She also likes how quiet it is; once it’s turned on, you’ll barely notice it.

This essential oil diffuser has limited features compared to some others. Aside from auto shut-off and a choice between continuous mode (six hours) or intermittent mode (six hours), there are no other settings to customize. But if you’re looking for a basic diffuser that still delivers on quality and scent, this is definitely one worth trying.

Pura 4 Diffuser

Hundreds of essential oil combinations from name brands

Can diffuse two oils at once

Smart functionality

It’s water-free and mist-free — you simply add the fragrance vials, plug it in, and let it begin working. You can also use the app to adjust the intensity level, set schedules and timers, or change the colors. Depending on the scent intensity, each fragrance vial can last for up to 120 hours.

Because you need to use Pura’s oils, it can get expensive – building a set will cost about $70. With a subscription , you can choose your delivery cadence and save 20% on future vials.

Large capacity and extensive run time

Dishwasher-safe

Bigger size may not fit all spaces

It hydrates rooms up to 500 square feet, and the humidifier treats the water flowing from the tank with UV light before evaporating it through the fan. Its auto mode increases humidity at night to help your skin , too.

To use this diffuser, simply place a bottle of your favorite essential oil upside down inside it on top of the aroma puck, and then the scent envelops the room without mist.

Cleaning this diffuser-humidifier combo is easy since it has dishwasher-safe parts. It comes in five different colors, including white, gray, cream, lavender, and mint green. The starter kit includes the humidifier, one wood pulp filter, and a three-piece Aroma Kit. You can also sign up for a subscription to receive a new filter every 45 days.

The Bottom Line

There are a variety of considerations when choosing an essential oil diffuser, including diffusion type, smart functionality, run time, tank capacity, and price. For an essential oil diffuser that delivers equally on style and diffusion, our top pick is the Seasons Soni SM Diffuser. A more wallet-friendly option that still provides multiple must-have features is the Asakuki 500ml Rock Essential Oil Diffuser.

Things To Consider When Buying Essential Oil Diffusers

Type: There are four main types of essential oil diffusers; nebulizing, evaporative, ultrasonic, and heat.

Ultrasonic diffusers are the most common. “They are easy to use and commonly cover 250 to 450 square feet of space, making them popular for home and office use,” says licensed acupuncturist and registered herbalist Jessica Baker.

Operation is simple with this diffuser type: Add essential oil to a tank of water and it disperses into the air along with mist.

Nebulizing diffusers are typically made of glass, and distribute potent essential oils with pressurized air. “The essential oil being dispersed is pure, so you end up breathing the oil in its entirety,” says clinical aromatherapist and herbalist Jody Pesapane, CEO of Mindful Mixtures and owner of The Herbologist Shop.

Pesapane notes nebulizing diffusers tend to carry higher price tags. They require straight oil (not a mixture diluted with water) and use it up quickly, so you’ll need to restock fairly often. “This type of diffuser works the best if you are needing some intense therapy,” she says.

Evaporative diffusers rely on a fan to blow air through a filter saturated with essential oil, and can function with or without water. “This type of machine is inexpensive, quiet, and can quickly fill a room with a scent,” Pesapane says. Keep in mind, though, that the scent likely won’t travel as far.

Pesapane adds that this diffuser type is easy to clean, “as you just need to change the filter each time a different oil is used.”

Heat diffusers evaporate and disperse essential oils dropped onto a heated plate. They can be effective for larger spaces because of how they help to expand the scent.

“It is more economical in terms of essential oil usage, but it may alter the smell and benefit,” Pesapane cautions. “The problem with heating an essential oil is that it changes the chemistry. If you are looking for therapeutic benefits from the oil, you may not get that with a heat diffuser.”

Tank Size and Capacity: Diffuser tank sizes range widely, from as small as 60 milliliters to as large as 500 milliliters. Smaller, portable diffusers will typically have lower capacities. This feature also depends on the type of diffuser, as evaporative and waterless models will not have a tank capacity.

Run Time: Many essential oil diffusers have long run times, making them ideal for use throughout the day. A typical run time for a diffuser is about 8 hours, although some can mist as long as 16 hours. Many diffusers also have timers that allow users to customize the run time, automatically shutting off at a time of your choosing.

Additional Features: Many essential oil diffusers go above and beyond the basic function of diffusing scent. Some feature smart capabilities, meaning you can pair the machine with your phone to control its settings remotely. Many have LED lighting (which can cycle through different colors), automatic shut-off abilities, and customizable run times. Certain brands also sell diffusers that double as humidifiers, or are equipped to mist two different oils at once.

Price: The price for an essential oil diffuser can vary greatly depending on the diffuser type, size, and features. You can expect to pay at least $25 for a basic model, while more sophisticated or advanced designs can cost upwards of $150.

How We Chose the Best Essential Oil Diffusers

We consulted with numerous aromatherapy experts to create this guide to the best essential oil diffusers. Those who contributed their insights include clinical aromatherapist and owner of The Barefoot Dragonfly Amy Kreydin ; clinical aromatherapist, herbalist, CEO of Mindful Mixtures, and owner of The Herbologist Shop Jody Pesapane ; licensed acupuncturist, registered herbalist, aromatherapist and Baker Botanica founder Jessica Baker ; and clinically certified aromatherapist, licensed massage therapist, and Saratoga Aromatherapy founder Jennifer Sowle .

With their guidance in mind, we researched different options, narrowing down the selection based on diffuser type, brand reputation, features, capacity, style, and price, as well as our writer’s firsthand experience with various essential oil diffusers. Our final list reflects options to suit a range of budgets and personal preferences.

WHY SHOULD YOU TRUST US?

Jamie Allison Sanders , the author of this piece, has more than 20 years of experience writing about products in the fashion, beauty, and lifestyle space. Her work for 360 Reviews has covered home goods like the best martini glasses , area rugs , and mug warmers . Additionally, she has written in-depth reviews and product guides for a variety of publications including InStyle, Well+Good, People, WWD, today.com, Saatva’s Sleep Enlightened blog, Hearst’s Best Products, SheKnows, Insider, and The Kitchn.

There are multiple potential benefits to using an essential oil diffuser. Essential oils are used in aromatherapy, which many find helpful to ease stress, calm anxiety , increase energy, reduce headaches, and promote better sleep.

Clinical aromatherapist Jennifer Sowle, founder of Saratoga Aromatherapy, recommends diffusing essential oils to improve focus and stimulation. “[It’s] great to stimulate you in the morning if you are groggy, have chronic fatigue, or trouble focusing,” she says. She also recommends running a diffuser to enhance relaxing activities like stretching, meditation , or yoga .

According to Sowle, make sure to diffuse pure essential oils, never fragrant ones that contain unwanted additives. “You can tell if they are pure based on the aroma,” she says. “They should smell like the plant material – earthy, herbally, like the smell of fresh herbs or tea.”

Amy Kreydin, clinical aromatherapist at The Barefoot Dragonfly, recommends scents like peppermint, lemon, and lavender. “The weighted blanket of aromatherapy has got to be lavender,” she says. “Lavender will have you feeling refreshed and rested upon waking with less daytime fatigue.”

Essential oil diffusers are designed to safely run for several hours. Many include a timer or auto shut-off function so you can adjust the run time to your liking. Ultrasonic diffusers also typically shut off once their water tanks are emptied. That said, Sowle cautions against over-diffusing “because you don’t want to overstimulate or over-sedate your system.” She suggests diffusing once in the morning and once in the evening, for a 60- to 90-minute period each time.

It’s also best to power down your diffuser before you head to bed, rather than running it throughout the night. “Shut it off manually or set it to time out quickly,” advises Kreydin. “Prolonged diffusing of essential oils in a space can irritate the respiratory tract and depress the nervous system.” If you want to incorporate essential oils into your bedtime routine, instead run the diffuser for about 15 to 30 minutes before you go to sleep.

When it comes to the oils themselves, make sure you choose products that won’t have potential adverse effects on kids and pets. “If you have pets, make sure windows are open so they can get fresh air,” Pesapane says. “Some oils are toxic to dogs, but cats should not be near them, and they can seriously injure birds.”

“Less is more when it comes to aromatherapy,” says Kreydin. “You don’t want to pack the whole of the south of France into your bedroom before you go to sleep.” She advises starting off with 2 to 4 drops of oil if diffusing in a small room, and 6 to 12 drops for a larger room.

It can be helpful to check the manufacturer’s guidelines for your diffuser, which may also tell you how much oil to use, and in the case of water-based diffusers, the ideal ratio of water to oil you should add.

To prevent mold growth in your essential oil diffuser, cleaning it after each use is a must. Kreydin likes soaking a cotton ball in rubbing alcohol to remove sticky residue, or adding a splash of vinegar to remove gunk around the basin’s hard-to-reach areas.

Baker’s method, meanwhile, involves ethanol and a moist cloth. “If there is a lot of buildup of residue, you may want to use less oils in your diffuser or clean it more often,” she says.

These 10 Home Fragrance Diffusers Will Infuse Your Space With Scent-Sational Bliss

travel perfume diffuser

Filling your space with scent can be a powerful thing. For instance, starting your day with a whiff of citrus can wake you up and get you mentally ready for what’s ahead, while sniffing on lavender before bed can make it easier to drift off to dreamland 2 . While candles and sprays are great ways to add scented home ambiance into your routine, a home fragrance diffuser allows you to do it on autopilot.

“A fragrance diffuser is a device that disperses chosen scents into the air, enhancing the ambiance of a space,” says Rancy Wong, the international product manager at doTERRA , an essential oils brand. “Diffusers can be used in any room in the house. Some popular locations are in the kitchen to freshen up a space after cooking, in the bathroom to keep it smelling clean, in a bedroom to diffuse while sleeping or in an office to accompany you throughout your workday.”

  • Rancy Wong , international product manager at doTERRA

What makes these home fragrance devices better than their similarly scented counterparts is that they require very little work—all you have to do is turn them on. There’s no remembering to trim your wicks or having to search for the bottle of pillow spray that’s buried somewhere in your nightstand; they’re “set it and forget it” products that will leave your space smelling its best. How home fragrance diffusers work

Fragrance diffusers—otherwise known as essential oil diffusers or aromatherapy diffusers— work by emitting scent into the air. There are five different types of devices on the market, each of which operates in a slightly different way and comes with its own set of benefits.

1. Waterless Diffusers

These types of diffusers diffuse essential oils into the air without the assistance of water.

Pros: Because these diffusers don’t use water, they disperse essential oils into the air more potently.

Cons: Waterless diffusers are more expensive to operate and require you to use a higher volume of essential oils for optimal results. Additionally, they can be noisy.

2. Ultrasonic Water Diffusers

“These popular electric diffusers use electronic frequencies to create a fine mist from essential oil and water,” says Wong. “A small disk under the water’s surface creates ultrasonic vibrations that break an essential oil into micro-particles.”

Pros: These models are quiet, don’t use heat, and only need a small volume of essential oils. “They can also act as both a diffuser and humidifier, which is helpful if you live in a drier climate,” says Wong.

Cons: Because ultrasonic water diffusers use water, only a fraction of the mist that comes out of them is essential oil, and if you live in a humid climate, you may not want to add more water into the air.

3. Heat Diffusers

“As the name suggests, heat diffusers evaporate essential oils with warmth,” says Wong. “Some heat diffusers mix essential oils with water, while others employ high temperatures for a stronger aroma.”

Pros: Heat diffusers are economical, efficient, and silent.

Cons: Heat diffusers can be dangerous due to their high temperatures. Just make sure you turn them off and keep them away from things that are flammable!

4. Evaporative Diffusers

“Evaporative diffusers have a fan that blows air through a filter, such as an essential oil–infused tissue or a pad, evaporating the essential oil and dispersing it through a room,” says Wong.

Pros: They’re extremely quiet.

Cons: Evaporative diffusers release essential oils first, so they may not deliver strong scents because the chemical components are diffused at different times.

5. Reed diffusers

“A reed diffuser is a passive diffuser that does not have any electronic components or fan to help disperse the aroma,” says Wong. “Reeds absorb the mixture of fractionated coconut oil and essential oils and evaporate the oil slowly into the air.”

Pros: Reed diffusers do not require batteries or electricity, which means they're pretty affordable.

Cons: Dispersion is generally weaker, which means these types of diffusers are better suited for small spaces like bathrooms or nightstands.

How to choose a home fragrance diffuser

There are several factors to consider when choosing the best fragrance diffuser for your home. First and foremost, how big is the space you’re trying to fill with scent? For larger rooms, you’ll want to opt for a waterless or ultrasonic device, as these tend to deliver more potent perfuming effects. “Also, evaluate factors like run time, noise level, ease of cleaning, design, budget, and additional features to choose a diffuser that suits your space and preferences,” says Wong.

Once you’ve made your pick, it’s important to remember to clean your diffuser regularly.

What is the difference between a home fragrance diffuser and an air freshener?

Air fresheners and diffusers both work to release fragrances into the air—they just happen to do it in slightly different ways. “Diffusers employ mechanisms like ultrasonic vibrations or heat to disperse natural essential oils, creating a nuanced scent profile and contributing to a specific ambiance with potential therapeutic effects,” explains Wong. “In contrast, air fresheners rely on synthetic chemicals to quickly eliminate or mask unpleasant odors, often using aerosols, gels, sprays, or solid forms.”

While both of these product categories get the job done in enhancing the air in your space, diffusers do so “with a more natural and multifaceted experience,” says Wong, while air fresheners use artificial fragrances to get rid of bad smells.

Convenient, safe, and long-lasting, a reed diffuser fills your space with subtly pleasant fragrance, all without the risks that come with lighting a traditional candle. Plus, they can last for weeks and require little to no maintenance. With scents ranging from calming lavender to musky sandalwood, you should be able to find a reed diffuser to match your scent preferences.

These sleek diffusers take up even less space than a candle (though some feature standout and stylish designs), pulling fragrant oils from glass bottles and dispersing them into the air via a small stick. You can even adjust the strength of the scent by adding or removing the reeds.

To help you find the best option for your space, we researched the best reed diffusers available, considering key details like fragrance and ingredients, diffuser size and design, and the lifespan of the scent when used.

Best Overall

Nest new york bamboo reed diffuser.

Nest is known for high-quality scented candles, and you can expect nothing less from the brand's reed diffuser. The set includes an etched glass jar reminiscent of a tiny flower vase, 5.9 ounces of fragrance oil, and eight chic black reed sticks. You can use all eight reeds at once for a more noticeable aroma or just a few for a subtler scent. The reed sticks soak up the oil, then release a continuous fragrance into your home for three months. You can also flip the sticks over every week or so to refresh the scent.

This top-shelf kit is available in 23 fragrances, so we’re confident you’ll be able to find one that suits your preferences. There's lemon-mint, apricot tea, Sicilian tangerine, grapefruit, birchwood pine, lemongrass-ginger, and Mediterranean fig—to name just a few. Many of the scents align with Nest's scented candles, soaps, and linen sprays , so you can use corresponding products throughout your home as needed. Although there's a lot to love about this reed-diffusing set, we wish its price was a bit more accessible.

Size: 5.9 ounces | Life Span: 3 months | Scent Options: 23

Cocod'or Flower Reed Diffuser

For something a bit more budget-friendly than our previous pick, check out the value-packed Cocod'or Reed Diffuser. It comes with a clear glass container, 6.7 ounces of fragrance oil, and five black reeds (not as many as others on this list). There's also a mini 1.6-ounce option if you prefer something smaller. You'll get dried flowers , too, which you can remove if they're not your style. However, we think it’s a charming addition that makes this reed diffuser a bit more decorative.

From garden lavender to vanilla sandalwood, you can choose from 12 different scents, each of which promises two months of pleasant aroma. Just note that you’ll have to wait a day or two for the sticks to soak in the scent. While some of the fragrances might smell a bit perfumey, the brand says they meet the International Fragrance Association (IRFA)  standards for safe, eco-friendly ingredients. The IRFA bans and restricts toxic materials and allergens to protect consumers, so you can feel confident when purchasing from manufacturers that comply with their guidelines.

Best Splurge

Diptyque home fragrance diffuser.

If you're looking to splurge, check out Diptyque's Home Fragrance Reed Diffuser. This premium product comes with a faceted oval vessel that looks like an antique. You'll also get six black rattan sticks and 6.8 ounces of fragrance oil that provides three months' worth of consistent aromatherapy.

While only seven scents are available on Diptyque’s website, it's still hard to choose because they're all unique and complex. The most popular is Baies (Berries), a fruity-floral blend of blackcurrant and rosebuds. You’ll also find one-of-a-kind scents like 34 Boulevard Saint Germain, Figuier (Fig Tree), Roses, Tubéreuse (Tuberose), Fleur D’oranger (Orange Blossom), and Mimosa.

Size: 6.8 ounces | Life span: 3 months | Scent Options:  7

Best for Gifting

396 st. reed diffuser.

Shopping for someone else? This fragrant and stylish reed diffuser from 369 St. makes an excellent gift, whether you’re looking for a Mother’s Day gift or a Valentine’s Day present . This set includes a glass bottle, five fiber reed sticks, one artificial eucalyptus stick, and 6.7 ounces of oil.

We also love that it comes with preserved baby’s breath flowers, which make this gift that much more lovely. The eight scents available on Amazon are highly versatile, including classic and beloved fragrances like peony, cotton, and vanilla lavender.

Size: 6.7 ounces | Life span: 2 months | Scent Options:  8

Best for Bathrooms

P.f. candle co. rattan reed diffuser.

If you're looking for a reed diffuser to place in your bathroom, we suggest P.F. Candle Co. This set comes with an apothecary-style amber glass bottle, 3.5 ounces of fragrance oil, and seven 9-inch-long rattan sticks. Since the bottle is about 2 inches wide, you can place it nearly anywhere—on a shelf, the counter, or even the toilet tank lid.

Choose from eight earth-inspired scents ranging from amber-moss to sandalwood-rose to relaxing lavender. Each lasts about four months, slowly releasing into your space. Just note it might take several days before you begin to notice the aroma.

Size: 3.5 ounces | Life span: 3–4 months | Scent Options:  6

Best for Bedrooms

Capri blue volcano signature reed oil diffuser.

When it comes to home fragrance, one of the most popular scents is Capri Blue’s Volcano–a deeply blue-hued glass candle that emits a wonderful tropical smell. Capri Blue has taken its much-loved fragrance beyond a traditional candle, though, and turned it into an easy-to-use reed oil diffuser that you can use without lighting a flame (or worrying about leaving it lit for hours).

Fans of Capri Blue note that this reed diffuser smells just like the original candle, and there are even additional fragrances to choose from if you’d like something a little different. With a strongly-scented hand-poured oil blend, you’ll be able to fill bedrooms both large and small with its great smell. This diffuser is particularly great for those looking to brighten up their bedroom with a scent that’s energizing and enticing.

Note that because of the strength of the scent throw, the fragrance won’t be subtle if you place it in a smaller bedroom. Overall, if it’s a familiar fragrance you want to bring right into your home, this potent diffuser delivers.

Size: 8 ounces | Life span: Not listed | Scent Options:  5

Best for Large Rooms

Dr. vranjes ambra diffuser + pack of white sticks.

If you plan on filling a spacious room with fragrance, you’ll want to opt for a diffuser with a more powerful fragrance. Although Dr. Vranjes’ Ambra Reed Diffuser comes at a higher price point, we think it’s worth it considering its long lifespan and strong scent throw.

This particular scent has strong notes of amber, patchouli, sandalwood, and vanilla for a sophisticated yet familiar fragrance. Each of the brand’s products is handcrafted in Florence, and the elegant glass bottle adds a charming touch to any space. You can either buy one large reed diffuser for your space or purchase a pack of three 0.3-ounce bottles to place in different corners of your large room.

Size: 0.3 ounces, 8.5 ounces, 16.9 ounces, 42.3 ounces | Life span: Not listed | Scent Options: One

Best for Home Office

Apotheke charcoal reed diffuser.

Apotheke's Charcoal Reed Diffuser is just the thing for your home office. This handsome all-black set comes with a matte bottle, 6.7 ounces of oil, and nine sticks (more than most). The full-bodied aroma is sophisticated, with a woody base, notes of smokey amber, and a hint of sweet, earthy oud.

This particular bundle is only available in one scent, but there are 10 other options on Amazon to choose from. While the sleek design and gender-neutral aroma are ideal for a workstation, Apotheke has several other excellent fragrance profiles, including tonka oat, Earl Grey bitters, and salty grapefruit. Plus, they all last up to four months.

Size: 6.7 ounces | Life span: 3-4 months | Scent Options: 11

Best Long-Lasting

Voluspa reed diffuser.

If you want a reed diffuser that’ll deliver continuous fragrance without leaving you worrying about refilling on the regular, we love Voluspa’s Reed Diffuser. Available in a wide selection of different scents, you can customize how your space smells with options that are crisp and airy, like a blend of eucalyptus and sage, or vibrant and fruity, like persimmon. Best of all, each of Voluspa’s oil fragrance blends is designed to last anywhere from four to six months in total, giving you as much as a month or more in lifespan compared to the typical reed diffuser.

Additionally, we love that the fragrance blend itself is made without chemical additives. Each variety is free of phthalates, pesticides, parabens, and sulfates, and has never been tested on animals. Just keep in mind that the fragrances do vary; some are stronger than others, so it may take a little trial and error to find one that’s ideal for your preferences.

Size: 6 ounces | Life span: 4-6 months | Scent Options: Various

Best for Small Spaces

Floral street reed diffuser.

If you’re searching for a diffuser that’s well-sized for small spaces, the Floral Street Reed Diffuser is the perfect fit. With a bottle that holds just 3.4 ounces of essential oil, this diffuser can offer months of light fragrance without overwhelming smaller bedrooms, living rooms, and offices.

Plus, if you’re concerned about the ingredients inside the oil-based fragrance you’re breathing in, Floral Street only uses cruelty-free, vegan, and sustainably sourced ingredients. Each scent is made without additives like parabens, sulfates, phthalates, dyes, and pigments. Even the packaging and reeds are smartly selected, as they’re recyclable and FSC-certified.

Note that we like Floral Street’s reed diffuser for small spaces only—the smaller size of the glass bottle means this diffuser holds less oil, which makes it less potent (and even imperceptible) in large rooms or open areas. It also runs more expensive, but due to the high-quality oil and cruelty-free nature, it’s a worthwhile investment for those who want to prioritize top-tier and sustainable ingredients.

Size: 3.4 ounces | Life span: Up to 4 months | Scent Options: One

Best Design

Illume reed diffusers and sticks.

While most reed diffusers come in a simple glass bottle, the Illume Reed Diffuser offers a unique and artistic look that sets it apart from the rest. This decorative glass jar doesn’t blend in with the rest of your decor instead it makes a statement with its green color and triangular shape.

Note that this reed diffuser only comes in one scent: balsam and cedar. While this rich fragrance is notably reminiscent of the holidays, it’s a great choice for anyone who loves woodsy scents. It also has notes of oak moss, cinnamon, and eucalyptus, making it particularly warm and inviting.

Size: Not listed | Life span: Not listed | Scent Options: One

Best for Everyday

Cocorrína reed diffuser.

If you’re using your reed diffuser day in and day out, you’ll want to pick one that’s value-packed and long-lasting. The Cocorrina Reed Diffuser ticks both of these boxes, and we’re confident that it’ll upgrade your daily lifestyle. Choose from 11 agreeable scents like lemon lavender and ocean breeze to impart lasting fragrance to your space. It offers a lot of bang for your buck considering its size and lifespan, so you won’t have to break the bank every time you need a refill.

We love the simple glass bottle, which matches nicely in any space. The reed diffuser set also comes with 6.8 ounces of oil (which lasts around three months) as well as eight cotton sticks to release the fragrance. The scent throw is present but not overwhelming, making it a great choice to use every day.

Size: 6.8 ounces | Life span: 3 months | Scent Options: 11

Best for Stress Relief

Sweet water decor stress relief reed diffuser set.

If you like to wind down after a long day with aromatherapy, check out the Sweet Water Decor Reed Diffuser Set. The oil is created with a mix of scent notes designed to relieve stress, including eucalyptus, spearmint, citrus, and sage. You can also find similarly relaxing fragrances, like lavender and sage or cashmere and vanilla. There are 24 scent options to choose from, so there’s no shortage of options no matter your preferences.

This reed diffuser set comes with eight reeds and 3.5 ounces of oil, which can last for over three months. Sweet Water Decor is a small woman-owned business based out of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and all of its products are handmade. Plus, the fragrances are free of lead and phthalates.

Size: 3.5 ounces | Life span: 3+ months | Scent Options: 24

Final Verdict

Our best overall reed diffuser is the Nest New York Bamboo Reed Diffuser , which offers a thoughtful design and long-lasting fragrance. We also recommend the Cocod'or Flower Reed Diffuser ( best value ), which is available in 12 pleasant scents and even comes with dried flowers for a decorative touch.

What to Look for When Buying a Reed Diffuser

When choosing a reed diffuser, you’ll want to consider the size of both the bottle (or diffuser) and the reeds (which work to bring the fragrance into your space). There’s no “right” size for a reed diffuser; it’s entirely up to you, and how strong you’d like the diffuser’s fragrance to be.

Larger diffusers with longer reeds, as well as more reeds per bottle, tend to offer longer scent lifespans and deliver a stronger scent throughout your space. The bigger the bottle, the more fragrance oil a reed diffuser can hold and disperse. Similarly, the more reeds you use–and the longer they are–the more reach the fragrance will have. If you’re looking for a reed diffuser with a strong scent throw and long lifespan, we recommend Dr. Vranjes’ Ambra Reed Diffuser ( best for large rooms ).

Ingredients

The fragrances and oil blends used in your typical reed diffuser aren’t any different from what you’d use with an electric diffuser. They’re basic (and highly fragrant) essential oils. While most retailers that offer reed diffusers will also sell different essential oils and oil blends designed to be used with the diffuser, you can also choose to purchase these separately.

In any case, you want to look for oils that are made with high-quality ingredients. Some can be made with alcohol and additives like parabens and phthalates, and we recommend looking for oils that don’t contain these. Instead, use oils that are certified USDA organic rather than synthetic fragrances. Some reed diffusers, like our best value Cocod'or Flower Reed Diffuser , also meet the International Fragrance Association standards, which ensure safe ingredients.

Choosing the fragrance your reed diffuser gives off is easy, but it’s an important consideration. Some fragrance oils are stronger than others, offering more potent scents. While some people may want a strong fragrance, others may want something lighter and more subtle. So, how do you choose? Think about the space you’ll be using your reed diffuser in and how you’d like to feel. Scents set the mood–for example, a soothing fragrance like lavender can calm the mind and help instill relaxation. Alternatively, citrus can be refreshing, bright, and energizing.

From calming florals and romantic musks to energizing citrus and earthy blends, there's a scent for every mood. If you’re looking for a reed diffuser with a wide variety of fragrance options, our best overall Nest New York Bamboo Reed Diffuser is available in 23 rich and well-rounded scents.

Different reed diffusers offer different lifespans, or lengths of time they emit fragrance. While these diffusers are pretty hands-off in terms of maintenance and use, they do eventually weaken in fragrance and use up all of their scented essential oils. In general, to extend the lifespan, you’ll want to flip the reeds over once each week.

After about three months, the fragrance will have dissipated completely. However, depending on the size of the diffuser bottle, how much oil it contains, and the size or length of your reeds, you may be able to get another few weeks out of your particular diffuser. Our best long-lasting pick is the Voluspa Reed Diffuser , which has a particularly impressive lifespan of four to six months.

It’s always a good idea to consider what kinds of refills you’ll need to use with any particular reed diffuser. Look into the refill options for whatever diffuser brand you’re considering, and take note of the size of the refills and how cost-effective it is to purchase them—especially if you plan to use your diffuser every day.

Reed diffusers typically last anywhere from two to six months. The scent life span depends on a few factors, including the potency of the fragrance, the size and shape of the bottle, how much oil is used, and how many sticks are placed inside. Flipping the reeds periodically can help prevent the aroma from fading.

"High-traffic areas work great so that the aromas can move through the space," says Forehand, noting that placing it near a door, open window, or air vent can dilute the scent. Since reed diffusers generally don't have very large coverage areas, they're also often ideal for smaller areas, like bathrooms, bedrooms, and home offices.

That being said, you’re still able to find more potent options that have a strong enough scent to fill large rooms as well. For even more scent coverage, we also recommend placing multiple reed diffusers in different corners of your space.

Customer Reviews

This is one of my favorites right now! It's sooo nice! Smooth. Light & super refreshing! Just wish it was longer lasting, and if you caught the hint in my title, I'd have to say it reminds me of "Light Blue" by D&B but stands above in my opinion. Just something about it. It is great, but it's similarity also makes me wish it had something to make it even stand apart even more. I guess I say that because someone asked me if it's what I was wearing. 😆 I leave with...get it! It's a beautiful, zesty, citrusy summer scent that I would where any other time all the same!

The first spray is a fleeting photorealistic vodka shot, which quickly dissolves into sparkling lime and gingery zest. The overall effect is more refreshing and cooling than any Summer drink. While citrusy and fruity with green apple, the scent isn't sweet but bracing. And besides the heady opening, this is not a boozy scent. And it's perfectly unisex.

In keeping with citrus forward scents, longevity relatively brief, and Silage is intimate. The final dry down is a skin scent combining JHAG's signature DNA with powdery, slightly indolic notes.

My bottle is in the fridge during the dog days of Summer for a quick pick me up. By the way, this layers brilliantly with the house's Lust for Sun.

I dont know if it's meant to be a men's cologne, a women's perfume, or if it's unisex. I got it in a box of other gifts from family, my wife thought it was a men's cologne and figured it was for me and I love it, it smells great, it last long, and I love the packaging it came in, my only problem was that I only have the 7.5ml size one but I'm definitely ordering more.

I have been searching everywhere for this scent! It's a classic for sure! Very calming and never overwhelming and timeless!

If you're looking for a fresh and delicate fragrance, Moscow Mule definitely is that girl!

I love this scent! I wear it everyday!!

That means that it's true love <3

This is my signature scent! This is a fresh and clean scent and my all time favorite of the jhag collection!

Came in time

I really enjoy the notes of lime and ginger in this, that’s the first thing I smell. It dries down to a fresh citrus that is very pleasant and energizing. I think this is a great casual daytime scent. It doesn’t project too much, but I do smell it on me for a good amount of time.

This is one of my favorites to wear anytime! The notes are so feminine. flirty, with a side of sexy! very fresh....love it and highly recommend!!!
