TRAVEL INSURANCE FAQ'S

We understand that travel insurance can be confusing, here are some of our most common questions.

Q. Can I buy a policy if I have already departed New Zealand?

Q. i am currently still on my trip and my policy ended, can i extend my policy, q. does tinz cover natural disasters, q. am i covered for riding a motorbike overseas.

  • Yes, you’re covered to ride a motorbike provided that: - You are licensed to ride a motorbike in New Zealand. - You hold a valid motorbike licence for the country you are in. - You wear a helmet at all times while riding. You can ride a motorcycle that is the same capacity you are licensed to ride in Australia. If your licence restricts the engine size you can ride, then you will need to stick to that when you are away. Learn more in our guide to riding motorbikes and scooters overseas.

Q. What doesn’t travel insurance cover?

  • It's important to be aware that all travel insurance policies have 'exclusions'. So, there are some things that we just can't cover you for. These certainly aren’t secret and can be found in our policy wording, but we want to highlight some of the things you’re unlikely to be covered for so that you can make smart decisions when heading on holiday. - You are generally not covered for reckless behaviour or deliberately putting yourself in harms way. - Not taking care of your personal belongings, such as leaving your things behind in public places. - You’rer not covered if you were drunk and the consumption of alcohol contributed to your loss. As for illegal recreational drugs, you're definitely not covered. - We have a general exclusion in relation to pandemics and epidemics. - You are not covered for pre-existing medical conditions that you failed to tell us about or take cover for. - You are not covered for events already known in the mass media at the time of purchasing your policy. Even though our policies have these exclusions, all TINZ customers are entitled to lodge a claim for review, which would be assessed based on individual facts and circumstances.

Q. Does TINZ cover pre-existing medical conditions?

  • Yes, don't let an existing medical condition get in the way of your travels. We cover 35 medical conditions automatically for free. Any other conditions need to be declared through our easy online medical assessment. See more information about pre-existing illnesses here.

Q. Am I covered for a family emergency?

  • Both TINZ’s Comprehensive & Comprehensive plans cover for additional travel expenses such as your return flight to New Zealand if a relative of either you, or travelling companion requires hospitalisation or dies unexpectedly. (no excess applies)

Q. What sports activities are covered by TINZ travel insurance?

  • TINZ gives you the freedom to take that heart-pounding leap - worry free! Our optional Sports & Activities Cover provides you with cover for a range of more adventurous activities not covered under a standard policy. We cover things like cycling, snorkelling (depth limits apply) and water skiing for free. We offer extra cover for activities like canyoning, abseiling, trekking above 3000 meters. See our sports adventure activities page for more information.

Q. What is TINZ’s terrorism cover?

  • While many travel insurers exclude cover for cancellation fees and lost deposits in the event of terrorism, under our Frequent Traveller and Comprehensive Plus plans we allow you to cancel in the event that MFAT travel warnings restrict you from travel. We provide $10 million worth of medical cover if you’re injured in a terror attack. Conditions apply. See more information about our terrorism cover here.

Canstar's Best Value Travel Insurance NZ

Holidays promise carefree relaxation away from work pressures and domestic chores. However, plenty of unforeseen events can ruin the best-laid vacation plans, from illness and accidents to the loss or theft of possessions. If the worst…

What is travel insurance and why do you need it when you travel?

What is travel insurance?

Travel insurance is financial cover for emergencies, accidents or loss that might occur to you or your belongings while you are travelling either domestically or internationally.

Why do you need travel insurance?

The New Zealand government website SafeTravel recommends travel insurance for anyone taking a trip away from home, especially overseas.

If you don’t have travel insurance and you lose your luggage, have an accident, medical emergency, or legal incident, you could face huge bills.

Cancelled flights and hotel accommodation can leave you out of pocket by thousands of dollars, but medical expenses can be even worse. A health emergency overseas can end up costing hundreds of thousands of dollars.

However, if you have travel insurance, you can travel confidently knowing you can get financial help in an emergency.

What else should you do before you travel?

In addition to organising travel insurance, before you leave:

  • If you are going overseas, visit the SafeTravel website’s Travel Advisories page to ascertain the current risks of travelling to your chosen destination. If a country is flagged with a “Do Not Travel” advisory, be aware that you may not be able to obtain insurance for the trip.
  • Regardless of where you are going, register your plans with SafeTravel. Your details will be stored securely and only used to reach you in an emergency.
  • Ensure you have all the relevant travel documentation to take with you on your trip, and that a trusted friend or relation in NZ has a copy, too.
  • Record the contact details of the New Zealand Embassy in your country of destination – just in case you need it.

Types of travel insurance and what they cover

There are two types of travel insurance cover policies.

1. Domestic travel insurance

Domestic travel insurance policies usually cover you for events such as:

  • Lost or stolen luggage or other items
  • Cancelling your trip unexpectedly due to illness, accident, holiday leave being revoked, or a natural disaster at home or at your intended destination
  • Rental vehicle excess you have to pay if you have an accident driving a hire car
  • Legal liability: the vast majority of policies researched include coverage for legal liability. Don’t take this as an excuse to break the law, though – you may end up invalidating your policy!

Domestic travel insurance usually doesn’t cover you for:

  • Medical cover. However, this is not a big problem because, as long as you’re in New Zealand, you can still access publicly funded health services or your private health insurance , if you have it
  • Certain “hazardous pursuits”. If you’re doing dangerous activities on your holiday, such as skiing, scuba diving, bungee jumping or rock climbing, you need to disclose it on your application. However, even if you disclose it, you still might not be covered for an accident that happens because of that activity, as it may be excluded from the policy. Ensure you read your policy terms and conditions carefully

2. International travel insurance

International travel insurance policies usually cover you for events such as:

  • Medical or dental emergency. Typical emergency medical cover will include hospital admission, emergency care and medical evacuation to another country’s hospital. If your medical situation is not an emergency, it is recommend you contact your insurer before you receive treatment, to check if it’s covered by your policy
  • Repatriation if you fall sick overseas and need to be evacuated back to NZ for treatment. Or if tragedy strikes, repatriation covers the cost of flying your body and belongings back home to NZ. Some travel insurance policies also include a separate sum for funeral expenses
  • Lost or stolen luggage, passport or other items. Replacing luggage and travel documents is the most common claim for travel insurance
  • Legal liability if you break a local law and need a lawyer and/or interpreter. Ignorance of local law is no excuse in most countries, so make sure you check SafeTravel before you depart. For example, in some Muslim countries it is an offence to wear a bikini on a public beach. If you break a law on purpose, your travel insurance policy may not cover your legal fees

International travel insurance usually doesn’t cover you for:

  • High-risk countries. Check the government’s SafeTravel website for the travel advisory status of your destination. Countries flagged with a “Do Not Travel” advisory may not be covered under your policy
  • Risky behavior. Any injury or loss caused by you behaving recklessly while you were under the influence of alcohol or drugs can be excluded from cover. This doesn’t apply to medication prescribed to you by a doctor and taken as prescribed
  • Pre-existing medical conditions. If you have experienced symptoms of a condition before travelling, even if the condition wasn’t diagnosed, medical expenses for it will generally not be covered. Read your policy’s terms and conditions carefully
  • High-value items. Many policies have a dollar limit that you can claim for each item, which may not be as much as it costs to replace the item
  • Notification period. Your policy may specify that you need to notify your insurer of an accident or event within a specified timeframe, such as 24 hours. It’s important to be aware of that notification period and to call your insurer as soon as you can, in the event of a potential claim
  • Loss of items left unattended. Keep an eye on your belongings at all times. You might not be covered if you leave your wallet and keys wrapped in a towel on the beach, or hidden in a shared room, or even in your checked-in luggage
  • Hazardous pursuits. Dangerous activities such as scuba diving, bungee jumping, rock climbing, off-piste skiing and hang-gliding are usually excluded, but they can often be added to your policy for an extra fee. Also be aware that riding a moped or motorcycle overseas might also not be covered, even if you are legally entitled to ride one in NZ

NB: No travel insurance policy will cover you for every single thing that might go wrong while you’re away, so it’s important to read your policy’s terms and conditions carefully to discover the full extent of your cover.

Travel insurance glossary of terms

  • Accident : An unexpected, unforeseeable, or unusual event that was unintended and caused loss or harm while you are on a trip covered by your policy.
  • Accommodation : Any type of dwelling or lodging that you pay a fee to stay in overnight.
  • Additional expenses : Additional expenses for accommodation and transportation that occur because of events such as illness, natural disasters, loss of travel documents, and transport union strikes.
  • Beneficiary : The person who would receive compensation from your insurance policy if you were to pass away during your travels.
  • Benefits: What your insurance provider gives you according to the terms of your policy. Benefits can apply if you make a claim or they can apply if a certain event happens, e.g. during an emergency.
  • Cancellation or amendment costs : The cost of cancelling, changing, or rearranging your journey because of unforeseen circumstances outside your control such as illness, accidents and extreme weather events.
  • Claim: A request for your insurance provider to pay certain expenses back to you in accordance with your policy.
  • Cover or coverage : The extent of protection given to you by your policy. If you are covered for an event, it means that you can claim back from your insurance provider a specified amount of expenses you incurred during that event.
  • Current market value : The amount of money you could get for an item if you sold it in the current local market. This amount is based on the original cost, the current condition and age of the item, and what it could be sold for in its present state.
  • Damage: Harm or injury to a person or property, resulting in the property losing value or not being able to be used properly.
  • Disability : A physical or mental condition that restricts a person’s movements, senses or activities. A disadvantage or handicap, especially one imposed or recognised by the law.
  • Emergency medical care : Medical care that is needed in an unexpected emergency. This does not include any type of regular medical care or foreseeable medical needs.
  • Endorsement: Any special condition listed on your insurance policy as an extra reason for you to buy the policy.
  • Excess: The excess is an amount that you pay instead of the insurer, e.g. “the first” $250 or $500 of a claim. Insurers usually have either a policy with different excess options that you choose between, or separate policies that each have a different excess amount. You can pay a lower premium if you have a higher excess, but you need to be sure that you could afford to pay the excess unexpectedly if you had to make a claim.
  • Exclusions : Anything that is not covered by your policy. Common exclusions include travel to high-risk countries, dangerous activities such as bungee jumping, risky behaviour, such as taking alcohol or drugs, pre-existing medical conditions, and loss of items left unattended.
  • Home: Your usual place of residence in New Zealand.
  • Incidental:  Costs associated with an unexpected covered event, which are not directly related to the event.
  • Inclusions: Any event, item or expense that is covered by your policy.
  • Injury: Anything that physically harms you and occurs by accidental or violent means, which is covered by your policy.
  • Journey: One of the terms insurers use to talk about the period you’re covered for, from the time you leave home until the time you return to your home. Also known as your trip, voyage, or travels.
  • Limit/benefit limit: Policies have a limit on the amount of benefits you can claim per year or per journey.
  • Luggage and personal effects: Personal items that you own or carry with you on a trip that is covered. This includes but is not limited to: suitcase or backpack, clothing, jewellery, computer or laptop, your phone and other portable electrical devices or equipment.
  • Medically necessary: Medical treatment that is needed to preserve your health, is suitable to treat your symptoms, and can be safely provided in your current location. This does not include treatment or procedures that are performed in your current location because it is merely convenient.
  • Natural disaster: An event caused by nature and not by any human activity, including earthquakes, storms, bushfires and floods.
  • Overseas medical expenses: Expenses incurred overseas for ambulance transport, hospital admission, surgical nursing, and emergency dental treatment.
  • Period of cover: The time your travel is covered by your policy.
  • Personal liability cover: Cover for costs incurred for which you are legally liable. You are legally liable if your negligence causes loss or damage to someone else’s property. Personal liability also covers you for injury to a person who is not a member of your family or travelling party. Personal liability cover does not cover damage you caused deliberately or that breaks the law; damage caused by your business or your employee; your ownership or use of a vehicle, aircraft or watercraft; or you passing on an illness to someone else.
  • Policy:  The travel insurance contract you have taken out with an insurance provider.
  • Pre-existing condition: A medical condition that existed in any form before you signed up for the insurance policy, whether or not you had your symptoms examined by a health practitioner. Your policy may usually list a time limit for the condition to be pre-existing, e.g. you have seen a medical practitioner in the past 90 days before you started your journey, or you have been prescribed a medication within the past 60 days.
  • Premium: The amount you pay your insurance provider for your travel insurance cover. Your premium must be paid on time for your travel to be covered.
  • Reasonable: When associated with an expense or cost, “reasonable” refers to what is usual, needed, and matches the standards of your previously scheduled travel.
  • Refund: Cash or company credit that can be given to you as reimbursement for your expenses, according to the terms of your policy.
  • Rental car insurance excess : The excess charged if your hire car is damaged or stolen.
  • Resumption of journey benefit : The benefit you receive if you claim the expense of resuming your travels. You can make a claim if you had to return to New Zealand suddenly due to a serious injury, illness, or the death of one of your relatives or business partners in New Zealand.
  • Sudden illness or serious injury : Illness or injury that occurs during your period of cover and requires immediate treatment by a health practitioner.
  • Travel delay : Scheduled transport that is delayed by over six hours. Scheduled transport can include plane flights, trains, trams, buses, ferries or cruises.
  • Unforeseen: Any circumstance that is out of your control. This can include illness, accident, cancelled flights, or natural disasters.

Please Note - If you are cruising around Australia you need to select Pacific. With Regions, variances can apply for Bali, Indonesia, Japan and Middle East. You are not required to enter stop-over countries if your stop-over is less than 48 hours.

If you don’t know where you’re traveling to within the next 12 months, choose Worldwide to ensure you’re covered no matter where you go. If you’re travelling to multiple countries choose the region that you are visiting that is furthest away (excluding stopovers less than 48 hours). In most cases you will be covered for the closer regions as well. For example, if you choose Europe, you will also be covered in the Middle East, Asia and Pacific.

Worldwide means anywhere in the world

Americas means USA, Canada, South America, Latin America, Hawaii and the Caribbean

Europe means all European countries, including UK

Middle East refers to the area from Syria to Yemen; Egypt to Iran

Asia generally means Asia and the Indian subcontinent. For some insurers this excludes Japan*

Don't use these fella's. I brought insurance back in August and told by the NZ insurance experts they won't cover the virus as it's a general exclusion like a nuclear disaster. SCTI have the same clause but are covering if purchased prior to 28 January. Look around and find better options.

They talk about us

Mentioned by various news outlets, such as stuff , nzherald , Solarcity, Truenet, nbr and many more.

What does travel insurance cover?

Cancellation cover.

You never know when you might need to cancel a flight and when that happens, your chosen airline can charge you a hefty fee for doing so or will not return your deposit. Standard travel insurance policies often cover this cost so that you can cancel your flight right up to the day of the flight at no cost at all. This applies to flight delays too.

Luggage & belongings

With so many bags constantly being lugged around, there are bound to be a few bags here and there that end up in the wrong place and it’s often out of your control. If you have travel insurance in NZ, your insurer will cover the purchase of a few essentials, meaning you won’t have to bear the brunt of the loss of your GoPro, laptop, camera and whatever else you may have lost.

Medical treatment

When you compare travel insurance policies in NZ, you may notice that most policies offer medical and dental cover. This may be just something simple like drugs for a cold or allergy while you’re overseas, or it could be something a little more complicated like surgery. Some policies may even pay for someone to escort you back home if you’re feeling really unwell.

Car rental excess

If you’ve rented a car while you’re overseas and it gets stolen or damaged then your travel insurance policy may be able to help you out, by providing cover for the excess you’ll need to pay for when you make a claim.

Personal liability

In the event that you accidentally damage property or are liable for damage to a person, your travel insurance provider may provide cover to pay the costs including legal fees to defend your claim and legal costs if you’re wrongly arrested or detained. While we hope it would never come to this, it doesn’t hurt to have the assurance that you would be covered if you were liable for something. Even the cheapest travel insurance policies in NZ usually provides cover for this.

Travel Insurance FAQ

What does travel insurance usually cover.

Although it will depend on your chosen insurance provider and policy type, a typical travel insurance plan will have coverage for all of a travelers main concerns. Standard travel insurance will generally cover you for trip cancellations, travel delays, medical emergencies, lost luggage and personal liability.

Most travel insurance policies are designed to be comprehensive, to protect you from a variety of situations and events that may cause financial loss. However, there are optional extras that can be added onto your policy, such as dental, adventure activities and rental car cover.

Should I get travel insurance?

While travel and adventure is always encouraged, the reality is that even the most well planned trips can go amiss. Nobody wants to prepare for the worst, but it’s absolutely vital to do so - and that’s why you should get travel insurance. Investing in travel insurance cover allows you to safeguard your trip, providing you with peace of mind and letting you get on with your holiday.

When should you buy travel insurance?

It goes without saying, that the best time to buy travel insurance in NZ is before you embark on your travels. However, the time you get travel insurance before that matters too. Ideally, you should book travel insurance within 15 days of trip purchase so that you have enough time to cancel the insurance if need be, and you won’t have any external events affecting the premium.

How do I file a claim for travel insurance?

While this may differ between different travel insurance companies, to claim for travel insurance you generally need to fill out an online claims form which you can find on your travel insurer’s website. You’ll then need to send supporting documents to confirm that it’s you filing the claim, and your insurer will start working on it!

Is there travel insurance for seniors in New Zealand?

Travelling can be the highlight of anyone’s year no matter where you’re venturing and we believe that age is no barrier to this. That’s why we can show you affordable travel insurance in NZ for seniors from insurers such as Southern Cross Travel Insurance, 1Cover and more that will insure you on your travels even if you’re older than 85.

Travel Insurance Compared NZ

  • Travel insurance is an insurance policy that is intended to cover medical expenses, lost luggage, flight accident and other losses incurred while travelling. Many travel insurance companies offer a range of policies, but our research confirms that price doesn't automatically mean better cover.
  • We suggest you consider buying a policy when you book your tickets so you don't forget (and be sure that the policy includes cancellation cover, which will help if you something happens before you plan to fly).
  • Many New Zealanders are confused about credit card travel insurance. While it's free as part of your annual card fee, many policies have exclusions and caps on travel days. If you're going to use it, make sure you  read the policy from start to finish  to avoid any nasty surprises.

Best Travel Insurance For A Single Traveler, 25 Years Old

  • Best travel insurance for Couples, 35 years old
  • Best travel insurance for Families 40 year old parents and 2 dependents
  • Best travel insurance for Couples, 65 years old
  • Best travel insurance for Couples, 75 years old
  • We have published this guide to explain the ins and outs of travel insurance. We explain how travel insurance works , what you need to consider when buying a policy and what to watch out for .
  • We have shortlisted the best travel insurance policies for travel in A ustralia, the Pacific Islands, Asia, Europe and North America for different age groups.
  • While we have taken the utmost care in putting together this guide, you use it at your own risk, and we do not guarantee the accuracy of the information presented. We recommend confirming policy terms and conditions directly with any travel insurance company before purchase, and make sure you understand your policy and are aware of all exclusions.

What information do I need to get travel insurance quotes?

  • Your travel dates (include the day you arrive back into New Zealand when you price policies)
  • The ages of anyone travelling with you , and any pre-existing medical conditions they may have
  • A list of valuables you plan to bring , such as cameras, laptops and other high-value items. Some policies may require additional cover fees for them to be included.
  • The amount you are prepared to pay for a claim - this is called the "excess". The higher the excess, the cheaper the policy. But if you don't want to pay, for example, a $250 excess for a claim worth $400, consider paying a little more upfront to lower the excess to perhaps a more manageable $100.

Do travel insurance policies cover COVID-19 illness-related costs?

1. travel insurance must-know facts.

  • Higher Excess: If you opt for a higher excess, the insurance company’s potential payout in case of a claim is reduced, which usually results in a lower premium for the policy. It's a way to share risk between the insurer and the insured.
  • Lower Excess: Conversely, a lower excess means the insurance company would potentially pay out more for a claim, so the premium is typically higher. This offers you less out-of-pocket expenses when you claim, in exchange for paying more upfront for the policy.
  • What it means:  This coverage provides unlimited financial protection for hospital, medical, surgical, nursing, ambulance, and emergency dental expenses incurred overseas due to sickness or injury. This is arguably the most important benefit of travel insurance, and if disaster strikes and you get sick or injured, you'll be fully looked after until you recover. All significant claims on travel insurance policies concern medical expenses.
  • Cover preference:  The best policies will have unlimited medical coverage.
  • What it means:  This coverage provides financial protection for additional accommodation and transportation expenses resulting from unexpected events such as sickness, natural disasters, severe weather, loss of travel documents and strikes. It's useful when you incur out-of-pocket expenses due to things not going to plan.
  • Cover preference:  The best policies will have unlimited additional expense coverage; the reality is that, in practice, you'll be able to claim for any costs that cause your trip to be disrupted in a significant way.
  • What it means:  This coverage provides financial protection for rearranging or cancelling your trip due to unforeseen circumstances outside your control, such as illness, accidents, or extreme weather conditions.
  • Cover preference:  The best policies will have generous amendment/cancellation costs.
  • What it means:  This coverage protects lost, stolen, or damaged luggage and personal items. There are limits to the coverage amount for certain items, such as cameras, laptops, and other items, and a maximum amount payable per item.
  • Cover preference:  The best policies will cover $3,000 or more per item rather than a $500 or $750 cap per item, which can leave some people out of pocket when the value exceeds the lower limits.
  • What it means:  This coverage provides financial protection for essential emergency items of clothing and toiletries purchased when a transport provider delays your luggage for more than 6-24 hours (depending on the policy).
  • Cover preference: A good insurance policy will reimburse you around $200 for a 12 hour delay in recovering your luggage.
  • What it means:  This coverage provides financial protection for money accidentally lost or stolen from your person.
  • Cover preference:  A decent amount; around $250 to $500 is reasonable. Post-COVID-19, fewer people are carrying cash as cards are widely accepted. However, anyone carrying perhaps 200 euros in cash and having their wallet stolen will benefit from cover that's $300+, and these claims are not uncommon.
  • What it means:  This coverage provides financial protection for the excess payment you become liable to pay due to damage to, or theft of, a rental car. Many rental car companies encourage you to 'buy out the excess' at a surcharge per day, which means you'll pay nothing if your rental car is damaged. However, the costs of buying out an excess can be $30 or even $50+ per day on top of the rental costs. For this reason, a travel insurance policy that takes care of the excess is favourable to avoid the upfront 'buyout' costs. However, you'd need to charge the repairs/excess fee to your card and claim from the insurer. Our guide to rental cars has more details.
  • Cover preference:  At least $4,000. Most car rental excesses will be at least 2,000 Euros, US$ 2,000 or £1,500 when you're overseas. If something bad happens to your car, you need cover to ensure there's no shortfall between the excess you've paid to the car rental company and what you get back from the insurer.
  • What it means:  This coverage provides financial protection for additional accommodation expenses if your scheduled transport is delayed for more than 6 hours. This usually benefits people who find their flights delayed or cancelled and need to book a hotel and pay for meals.
  • Cover preference:  Per event, e.g. delay, an amount of $1,000 is reasonable, given delays don't last that long.
  • What it means:  This coverage provides financial protection for the cost of returning overseas if you have to return to New Zealand early due to the ill health of a relative or partner in New Zealand.
  • Cover preference:  The costs of resuming travel can be high -the best cover will be at least $50,000.
  • What it means:  This coverage provides financial protection for the cost of alternate public transport services to catch up on your planned itinerary if you miss a connection due to unforeseen circumstances outside your control.
  • Cover preference: A good policy should cover you for up to $15,000 in the event of a missed connection.
  • What it means:  This coverage provides financial protection for costs due to unforeseeable circumstances outside your control that result in you being unable to arrive in time to attend a special event, such as a wedding, funeral, conference, concert, music festival, or sporting event.
  • Cover preference: A good policy should cover you for around $5,000 in the event of a being unable to attend a special event.
  • What it means:  This coverage provides financial protection if you cannot return to your work in New Zealand due to an injury sustained during your journey.
  • Cover preference:  A benefit of $4,500, up to $500 per month, is reasonable, as it provides adequate protection for potential loss of income while you recover.
  • What it means:  This coverage provides financial protection for an injury that causes permanent total loss of sight in one or both eyes or the permanent loss of use of one or more limbs within 12 months of the date of the accident.
  • Cover preference:  Travel insurers seldom offer generous disability coverage, as the policies are not designed to offer income protection or permanent disability. For this reason, a cash payout of $5,000 or $10,000 is reasonable.
  • What it means:  This coverage provides financial protection to your estate if you die within 12 months from an injury that occurred during your trip.
  • Cover preference:  Travel insurance is not designed to act as a life insurance policy, so the benefits paid for accidental death are usually $20,000 to $50,000.
  • What it means:  This coverage provides financial protection for your reasonable legal expenses if you are falsely arrested or wrongfully detained by any government or foreign power. However, it won't cover legal expenses if you commit a crime (such as driving over an alcohol limit) or anything else.
  • Cover preference:  A coverage limit that is adequate to cover reasonable legal expenses is reasonable.
  • What it means: This coverage provides personal liability cover if your negligent act or omission during the journey causes bodily injury or damage to the property of other persons, and you are legally liable to pay compensation.
  • Cover preference:  Travel insurers are often generous with their benefits, knowing it's rarely claimed. A limit of $2,500,000 is reasonable should, in rare cases, you need to claim.

3. Travel Insurance Comparison by Age Group and Destination

  • Comprehensive cover for more than just medical - we analysed in detail, beyond the cheap policies offering nothing but accident cover. We looked for policies labelled as "comprehensive", offering reasonable levels of medical cover, and decent reimbursements for travel delays and lost or stolen personal items.
  • Low excess - Excesses vary, but most insurers have policies with $100 excesses so this is the benchmark we used except when not offered (TINZ and Mixandmatch).
  • Zero excess on essentials - some policies don't charge an excess on certain events - delays and hospital cash being some examples, which means you can claim without being out of pocket for the excess.
  • Value for money - We ordered our results by price, from lowest to highest and indicated if the insurer offers additional discounts for existing policyholders (the price quoted does not include the possible discount).
  • To obtain our quote data, we used a number of different ages as specified below, travelling to various popular destinations
  • We evaluated comprehensive policies offered by 17 insurance companies, for both single trips and annual policies (also called multi-trip or frequent traveller policies)
  • In most cases, travel insurance quotes rarely move "within the range", so if you and your children are of a different age to what we used, the quotes will still be similar to what we have given  below,  the age of school-aged children is not a significant factor for policy prices and are often covered until the age of 18 (but check the insurer's policy).
  • Individual : one 25-year-old
  • 35 year old couple :   two 35-year-olds
  • Family : two 40-year-olds and two children aged 8 and 10
  • 65 year old couple : two 65 year olds
  • 75 year old coupl e: two 75 year olds

  • Most travel insurance sold in New Zealand by brands such as State, AA, 1Cover and Air New Zealand is underwritten by major insurers. This means the policy has strength and you are not relying on the solvency of your provider to pay out any claim.
  • You'll see statements that say the policy is underwritten by Allianz, Cover-More, Chubb, Southern Cross  and Tower for example, and we have noted the underwriter with every insurance provider.

4. Best Travel Insurance Policies - Single Trip and Multi-Trip:

  • Webjet : Webjet has a strong market presence, offering travellers competitive prices with standard excess amounts.
  • Southern Cross : With competitive pricing and a 5% discount for existing policyholders, Southern Cross consistently provides travellers with affordable coverage and lower excess costs.
  • TINZ and Mixandmatch : These providers often top the rankings of our travel insurance analysis. It must be noted that their excess is higher than other providers TINZ at $200, Mixandmatch at $150, while all others are $100. However, they both offer good value for budget-conscious travellers.
  • Worldcare , while not as prominent as Webjet or Southern Cross, Worldcare offers competitive rates that could be appealing to travellers considering a lower excess liability.
  • Southern Cross : With competitive pricing and an additional discount of 5% for existing policyholders, Southern Cross consistently provides travellers with affordable coverage and lower excess costs.
  • Tower : Offering good value and with a reputation for providing robust customer service and support, Tower is a good option when considering annual travel policies.
  • 1Cover : Their multi-trip insurance is appreciated for its comprehensive protection, and it’s a very good choice if you’re planning on driving while abroad as their policies come with a $5,000 rental vehicle excess cover at no additional cost.
  • Mixandmatch : This insurer often appears on the top of our table as providing very good value but it must be noted that as with their single trip policies, the lowest excess they offer is $150, while the other insurers evaluated have an excess of $100.

5. Credit Card Travel Insurance vs Buying a Standalone Policy

Before relying on credit card travel insurance, we suggest considering the following potential limitations:.

  • Coverage Limits:  Most credit card travel insurance policies have caps on coverage. What's offered will vary depending on the specific card and policy; reviewing the policy details is important to understand the limits and whether they're realistic for your plans.
  • Duration of Coverage:  Credit card travel insurance policies may only cover trips up to a certain number of days, which may not be sufficient for longer trips.
  • Pre-Existing Medical Conditions:  Credit card travel insurance policies may exclude coverage for pre-existing medical conditions, so reviewing the policy details is essential if you or someone travelling with you would fall into this category.
  • Activation of Coverage:  To activate coverage, you may need to pay for all or a portion of your travel expenses with the credit card that offers the insurance. This may be paying for half of the trip, the flights or something else. If you don't qualify, the policy won't be valid.
  • Coverage for Travel Companions:  Some credit card travel insurance policies may provide coverage for your travel companions, while others may not. If you have a group, then it's unlikely you'll be covered.
  • Coverage for Adventure Sports:  Credit card travel insurance policies may exclude coverage for adventure sports and high-risk activities, but in some cases, you may pay to add this. Whether this is cost-effective depends on the credit card's insurer and your plans.
  • Coverage for Lost or Stolen Items:  Credit card travel insurance policies may include coverage for lost or stolen items, such as luggage, but the coverage  limits may be lower  than what you would get with a standalone travel insurance policy.
  • Understand the Claim Process:  It's important to understand the claim process for the credit card travel insurance policy, including the documentation required and any time limits for submitting a claim. You should also be aware of any deductibles or excesses that may apply.
  • Consider Supplementary Coverage:  If the credit card travel insurance policy's coverage is insufficient for your needs, you may want to consider purchasing additional coverage to supplement the policy.

6. Making a Travel Insurance Claim

Why do i need travel insurance, what type of travel insurance is the best for my holiday, what does travel insurance usually cover.

  • Cancellation and travel delays: This includes pre-departure cancellations due to illness, delayed flights and delayed luggage
  • Medical expenses: The costs of visiting a doctor and/or having medical treatment, and all related medicines
  • Personal liability:  This is to cover damage you cause to a person and/or property
  • Emergency evacuation : If you need medical treatment or aftercare back in New Zealand, this is the cost of flying you home.
  • Baggage and personal belongings : This covers you if your bags or items are lost, stolen or damaged.

Got a question about travel insurance? We're here to help

What is travel insurance.

Travel insurance is a specific type of insurance that helps cover several costs and disruptions when travelling both domestically and overseas. Levels of cover differ per plan; however, travel insurance can typically help protect against trip cancellation, delays, lost luggage and personal belongings, overseas medical expenses and repatriation, and personal liability.

Most travel insurance providers offer single or multi-trip policies, which can cover multiple countries within a specific timeframe. Things like the destination, length of trip, optional additional cover for specific activities and pre-existing medical conditions all help determine the cost of a travel insurance policy.

How much does travel insurance cost?

The cost of a travel insurance policy varies from traveller to traveller because various factors affect the amount payable.

At Cover-More, we consider a number of factors when calculating the total amount payable. The following is a guide on these key factors, how they combine and how they may impact the assessment of risk and therefore the premium paid:

  • Area: higher risk areas cost more.
  • Departure date and trip duration: the longer the period until you depart and the longer your trip duration, the higher the cost may be.
  • Age: higher risk age groups cost more.
  • Plan: International Comprehensive+, which provides more cover, costs more than International Comprehensive or Domestic.
  • Excess: on some policies you can choose the excess amount.
  • Cruise cover: additional premium applies.
  • Cancellation cover: on some policies you can choose your own level of cancellation cover. The more cancellation cover you require, the higher the cost may be.
  • Adding cover for Existing Medical Conditions and pregnancy (where available): additional premium may apply if a medical assessment is completed and cover is accepted by us.
  • Options to vary cover (where available): additional premium applies.

While a cheaper policy cost upfront may seem appealing, always read the Policy Wording to ensure your needs are adequately covered should an incident occur.

How does travel insurance work?

Travel insurance protects you when travelling domestically or internationally by providing coverage against unforeseen circumstances that may impact your travel plans. By purchasing travel insurance with cancellation cover prior to departure, your policy can help by providing cover for the costs of trip cancellations should you no longer be able to travel, as well as the costs of overseas medical treatment, lost passports, and personal items while you’re travelling.

The customer usually pays for these costs upfront, before being reimbursed by the travel insurer upon claim approval. To approve a claim, travel insurers require documentation such as medical reports, itemised medical bills or police reports to confirm the incident occurred.

However, at Cover-More, if our customer becomes ill overseas, they can also contact our 24-Hour Emergency Assistance team for support and to seek approval for expensive medical bills to be paid directly by us to the medical care provider/s instead.

Always read the Policy Wording before purchasing a travel insurance policy to ensure it provides adequate coverage for your circumstances.

What does – and doesn’t – travel insurance cover?

Unfortunately, travel insurance can’t cover absolutely everything. This highlights the importance for travellers to read the  Policy Wording  before purchasing to avoid becoming frustrated if claims are unsuccessful. It will contain details on the situations you likely won’t be covered in, including cancellation, pre-existing medical conditions, theft or loss of belongings, adventure sports, COVID-19 scenarios and more.

For full details of the exclusions within our Cover-More travel insurance plans, consult the  Policy Wording .

When is the best time to purchase travel insurance?

The best time to purchase travel insurance is as soon as a trip is booked, as this can increase protection. When purchased ahead of time, a Cover-More customer can cancel their travel insurance policy for a full refund within the 21-day cooling-off period. If the policy is purchased before departing on the trip, claims for rearrangements and cancellations caused by unforeseen circumstances can also be made where cancellation cover is added to the policy.

Travel Insurance

Why do i need travel insurance.

Part of the travel experience is heading into the unknown. Being well prepared is the best way to start. Travel insurance covers you from the moment you purchase the Policy until you come home safely. You’re even covered for cancellation before your trip takes off.

Along the way you’ll be covered for unexpected events beyond your control, including lost bags and unlimited medical cover. You’ll find a summary of our policies in our Policy brochure. For full details of cover and exclusions, see your House of Travel consultant.

We’re hugely passionate about travel and have teamed up with Allianz Partners, a world leader in assistance and travel insurance.

Allianz Partners has direct support worldwide, from people who care about people. With 33 centres operating in 28 countries.

Together, we offer an unparalleled standard of emergency medical assistance to policy holders.

Make an online claim

As part of your claim you may be required to: 1. Provide supporting documentation such as original invoices, receipts, and other vouchers relating to your expenses or loss. 2. Produce your policy details 3. Provide all the information required to enable the claim to be considered.

What documentation is required to make a claim?

You must give any information reasonably asked for to support your claim at your expense, such as, but not limited to, police reports, valuations, medical reports, receipts or proof of ownership. If required, you may be asked to provide translations into English of such documents to enable Allianz to carry out our assessment of your claim. • For loss or theft of your baggage or personal effects, you should notify the local police or local government authority with 24 hours and you must obtain a copy of the incident report. • For damage or misplacement of your baggage or personal effects caused by the airline or any other operator or accommodation provider, report the damage or misplacement to an appropriate official and obtain a written report, including any offer of settlement that they make. • For medical or dental claims please contact Allianz Partners as soon as practicable and ensure that you retain all reports, receipts, doctor’s certificates and other information.

Important claims information

All claims are paid in New Zealand dollars. Allianz will pay you unless you advise to pay someone else. The rate of currency exchange that will apply is the rate at the time you incurred the expense. Depreciation will be applied to claims for Luggage and Personal Effects at such rates as reasonably determined by Allianz Partners. If you can make a claim against someone in relation to a loss or expense covered under this policy and you do not get paid the full amount of your claim, Allianz will make up the difference. You must claim from them first.

Emergency assistance

If you require emergency assistance while you are travelling you should contact the Allianz Global Emergency Assistance Team. When you call please have your name, policy number, details describing your emergency and a contact phone number, including area code to provide ready for the operator. Within New Zealand: 0800 778 103 Reverse charge call through telephone operator: +649 486 6868 It is important that travellers tell Allianz immediately when they become aware of any circumstances that may give rise to a claim. If you require assistance with a claim while overseas, you need to call and they will give advice on what to do. If you are asked to submit a claim, you must do this within 30 days of your return to New Zealand. To reduce delays in processing a claim, travellers should ensure documentation is submitted at the time of claim.

Travel Insurance FAQs

No , travel insurance is the same price if you buy it straight away, or on the day of departure. Delaying the purchase simply leaves you uninsured for the travel funds you have just invested. More than a third of all claim costs paid by Allianz Partners are for customers that were unable to travel due to unexpected events, so we strongly recommend to everyone to take out travel insurance on the day you pay your deposit.

No , travel insurance policies can vary greatly, so it is very important that travellers check through and make sure that the policy suits your needs.

Yes, travel insurance is needed for all international travel. Some people assume that they don’t need travel insurance because New Zealand has a reciprocal health agreement with Australia. However, not all health costs are covered, including ambulance call outs, doctor visits or private hospitalisation.

As there are no reciprocal health agreements in place with the South Pacific nations, any healthcare costs need to be paid for. Even relatively small injuries or illness can run into thousands of dollars.

Travel insurance policies can differ greatly, including the level of cover, automatically included benefits, exclusions and terms and conditions.

It is important to check that the policy meets your requirements for cancellation benefits, coverage of any pre-existing medical conditions and coverage of higher value personal effects. We recommend that travellers check through the policy to make sure that it meets your needs.

Buying a travel insurance policy at your local store will provide you with back up and support from your House of Travel consultant. With customer permission, our booking system also allows us to track our customers around the world. This has proved to be incredibly useful during crisis around the world.

With House of Travel Travel Insurance, Allianz Partners’ doctors, registered nurses, logistic professionals and support personnel will be there for you. If you need emergency help, call Allianz Partners toll-free 24/7. The assistance team based in Brisbane will assign you a case manager who will assist.

For non-emergency help or to lodge a claim you can contact Allianz Partners claims team who are based in Auckland. > Make an online claim

  • 8. How do I declare my pre-existing medical conditions? Your House of Travel consultant will give you a toll-free telephone number to call the Allianz Partners' medical assessment team, Monday-Friday, 9-5pm. Please have your travel insurance policy or quote number ready to give to the medical assessor. You will be asked a series of questions about your medical conditions. If you are unsure of your conditions, please discuss with your treating doctor first.

Yes, House of Travel strongly recommends you register your travel plans at www.safetravel.govt.nz before you travel. Safe Travel is the official registration website for New Zealanders travelling or living overseas. Ask your House of Travel consultant for our travel insurance Policy Wording.

What is travel insurance.

Travel insurance is a specific type of insurance that helps cover several costs and disruptions when travelling both domestically and overseas. Levels of cover differ per plan; however, travel insurance typically protects against trip cancellation, delays, lost luggage and personal belongings, overseas medical expenses and repatriation, and personal liability.

  • Excess: the higher the excess the lower the cost.

While a cheaper policy cost upfront may seem appealing, always read the Product Disclosure Statement to ensure your needs are adequately covered should an incident occur.

Always read the Product Disclosure Statement before purchasing a travel insurance policy to ensure it provides adequate coverage for your circumstances.

What does – and doesn’t – travel insurance cover?

Unfortunately, travel insurance can’t cover absolutely everything. This highlights the importance for travellers to read the  Product Disclosure Statement  before purchasing to avoid becoming frustrated if claims are unsuccessful. It will contain details on the situations you likely won’t be covered in, including cancellation, pre-existing medical conditions, theft or loss of belongings, adventure sports, COVID-19 scenarios and more.

For full details of the exclusions within our Cover-More travel insurance plans, consult the  Product Disclosure Statement  .
