The year 2020 was the most difficult year for the travel industry. This industry has suffered record losses due to the coronavirus pandemic. Not surprisingly most of the planned tourism events and conferences have been cancelled or postponed. But in 2021, most of the events have been scheduled at different times as the countries have reopened their borders

ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF) 2022

Date: 16-22 January 2022

Place: Cambodia

ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF) is a supportive travel-trade event that will promote the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) as one tourist destination. Ipw 2022 fuels u.s. travel industry recovery.

ORLANDO, Fla. – The travel industry came together June 4-8 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla., for the 53rd annual IPW , put on by the U.S. Travel Association . IPW is the global travel industry’s leading international marketplace and the largest generator of travel to the U.S. This year’s trade show drew nearly 4,800 event attendees from more than 60 countries and logged 77,000 scheduled business appointments over three days. The delegation also included nearly 500 members of the international and domestic media.

IPW brings together global travel professionals, including U.S. destinations, hotels, attractions, sports teams, cruise lines, airlines and transportation companies, along with international tour operators, buyers and wholesalers from around the world. About $5.5 billion in future travel to the U.S. is booked due to conversations at IPW, according to Malcolm Smith, Senior Vice President of Business Development and General Manager of IPW.

“When we started budgeting and planning for IPW 2022, there was still Delta and then the Omicron surge, and it was anybody’s guess what the COVID restrictions would look like,” Smith said. “We were really pleased with the excitement we heard, not just domestically from our exhibitors, but from around the world — people ready to get back to international travel.”

According to Smith, many of the event exhibitors at this year’s trade show, including hotels, convention bureaus and other travel suppliers, either increased their footprint on the show floor or increased their event sponsorship.

“We had record advertising and sponsorship revenues this year,” he said. Some new aspects to the trade show this year included education sessions on the show floor as well as an additional eight hours of networking time.

International Travel Rebound

One of the major topics of discussion at this year’s IPW, which was sponsored by Brand USA , the destination marketing organization for the U.S., was the lifting of pre-departure COVID testing for inbound travelers to the U.S. 

“Lifting pre-departure testing requirements was a centerpiece of U.S. Travel’s advocacy efforts and a major topic of discussion at IPW 2022,” Smith said in a release after the official lifting of restrictions was announced. “This announcement came after tireless, consistent and coordinated efforts to send a clear message to the administration. Heartfelt thanks to U.S. Travel’s public affairs team for making this accomplishment—one that paves the way for a true resurgence of international travel to the U.S.—possible.”

U.S. Travel also released its updated  international travel forecast , which projects 65 million international arrivals in 2023 (82% of pre-pandemic levels). The forecast projects that international arrivals and spending will fully recover to 2019 levels by 2025.

“This IPW is sending a message that the U.S. is open for business and eager to welcome travelers from around the world,” Roger Dow, CEO of the U.S. Travel Association, said. “We are taking a huge step forward here to bring back international travel, restore jobs, and re-establish the bonds that connect our countries and cultures.”

Though IPW was held in person in Las Vegas in 2021, the numbers were much smaller due to the pandemic. “Last year we had just under 600 international delegates and this year over 1,200, so more than double which is really exciting,” Smith said. “Last year we had a campaign of Reunite, Reconnect and Rebuild, but it was so challenging for so many markets to get to the U.S. We felt this would really be the year of the reunion when the global industry came back together again.”

The 54th annual IPW will take place May 20-24, 2023, in San Antonio, Texas.

Despite a recent coaching change in Lexington, Gonzaga and Kentucky will resume their six-year nonconference series in 2024-25.

The Bulldogs and Wildcats have reportedly set a date for part three of the series and will meet on Dec. 7 at Seattle’s Climate Pledge Arena, according to CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein.

A tipoff time and television details for the game will be announced at a later date.

A multiyear series between two of the premier programs in college basketball was finalized prior to the 2022-23 season, featuring games at the Arena (2022-23), Lexington’s Rupp Arena (2023-24), Seattle’s Climate Pledge Arena (2024-25), Nashville, Tennessee (2025-26), Rupp Arena (2026-27) and Spokane’s McCarthey Athletic Center (2027-28).

The nonconference series was facilitated by Gonzaga coach Mark Few and then-Kentucky coach John Calipari, longtime friends who’ve known each other dating back to Calipari’s stint at Memphis.

In the highest-profile coaching move of the college basketball offseason, Calipari left Kentucky after 15 seasons to take the same job at Arkansas, raising questions as to whether the Zags and Wildcats would resume their series.

That doesn’t seem to be in jeopardy, at least for this season, and the new face on Kentucky’s sideline in December will be a familiar one to Gonzaga fans.

Shortly after Calipari’s departure, Kentucky hired former BYU coach Mark Pope, a standout player for the Wildcats from 1994-96. Gonzaga played nine games against Pope’s teams during his tenure in the West Coast Conference, accumulating an 8-1 record against the Cougars.

Gonzaga will look to extend its win streak to 3-0 against Kentucky this year after beating the Wildcats 88-72 on Nov. 20, 2022, at the Arena and holding on for an 89-85 victory at Rupp Arena on Feb. 10.

Few’s team will be seeking its first win at Climate Pledge Arena after losing 91-82 to Alabama in 2021 and 76-63 to UConn in 2023.

The Bulldogs bring back six of the seven players who appeared in last season’s win at Kentucky and add three transfers in Pepperdine’s Michael Ajayi – if he withdraws his name from the NBA draft – Arkansas’ Khalif Battle and Tarleton State’s Emmanuel Innocenti, who committed to GU on Wednesday. The Zags also bring back Steele Venters, who missed last season with an ACL tear.

Kentucky isn’t expected to bring back any of the 10 players who logged minutes last year against Gonzaga, but the Wildcats have reloaded with seven players from the transfer portal, including West Virginia’s Kerr Kriisa, Dayton’s Koby Brea, Oklahoma State’s Brandon Garrison, Wake Forest’s Andrew Carr, Oklahoma’s Otega Oweh, San Diego State’s Lamont Butler Jr., and Drexel’s Amari Williams.

Gonzaga’s nonconference calendar is again loaded with high-profile opponents. Along with Kentucky, the Bulldogs have other neutral-site games against UCLA at the Intuit Dome in Los Angeles and UConn at Madison Square Garden.

Gonzaga is set to host Washington and travel to play San Diego State at Viejas Arena. The Bulldogs could also face three high-major opponents in as many days at the Battle 4 Atlantis in Nassau, Bahamas.
