• Luxembourg City Is a small city full of life and beauty. Marvel at its history, ancient fortifications, treelined cobblestone streets, and lush parks. Wander the Old Quarter, Parc Merveilleux, and the impressive Citadel, Climb the Corniche walls, visit the remarkable Gate of Grund, or stroll along the river.
• Bock Casemates in Luxembourg City  Is a subterranean defense system made up of 11 miles of tunnels and fascinating history and is one of Luxembourg’s most important visitor sites. These underground galleries were carved out in the 17th century under Spanish rule and have been extended twice. There is also an archaeological crypt and an antechamber to the casemates, which are worth adding to your visit.
• Vianden Castle And the town of Vianden are some of the most scenic in Luxembourg. It is surrounded by a medieval outer wall with guard towers throughout. The castle built in the 9th century sits above the town in all its glory. Take the chairlift and partake in the gorgeous views of the countryside.
• Bourscheid Castle This 10th-century beautifully preserved castle is in an area rich with outdoor activities and a charming village to enjoy.
• Echternach This lovely quaint town on the banks of the River Sure near Germany is a gem. Step back in time as you wander the winding streets full of lovely old homes and medieval architecture.

Good to know before you go

• Tipping does occur in Luxembourg, as opposed to the rest of the E.U. At restaurants and bars, the tip usually is 15%. Hotels 2-3 euros a night for housekeeping and 1-2 euros for a bellhop. Car services and taxis are about 10%. Spas, personal services, and tipping are not expected.
• Credits cards are accepted everywhere.
• Overall, the clothing is stylish and well-kept. Keep in mind in the city; most workers come from out of the country; they don’t reside there. We found many people walking around in casual and formal business attire. There were jeans, trousers, and comfortable shoes when dressed outside business attire. The locals seemed to like brighter colors.
• Luxembourg has a good network of highways (toll-free) and secondary roads. Speeding and traffic offenses, in general, are subject to hefty fines. You pay on the spot. No getting home and saying, oh well, not going back anytime soon. They have this covered.
• Luxembourg’s fuel is one of the cheapest in the E.U., So fill there if heading to another country.
• Family always comes first in Luxembourg; it’s normal for parents to remain deeply involved with their child’s lives and adulthood choices. You may see many families with their children in all settings. The parks were full of families.
• The people of Luxembourg are private by nature and give off a feeling of being formal and reserved. They are not rude or unfriendly, but their personal expression is held back. Recognize that as who they are and do not take it personally if you don’t feel a strong welcome.  
• Greetings are more formal, and you do not use first names unless they offer. The most common greeting is a brief handshake. Touching is not something you will see during conversations, even among close friends. Pointing is impolite to the locals so avoid that.
• Certain behaviors will not win favors in Luxembourg. Chewing gum and putting your feet on a chair or table will gain some disapproving looks.
• Good manners are important to the Luxembourg people. They practice them as well. Being blunt is considered rude behavior, and punctuality is taken very seriously. If you are late, you are seen as unreliable and should offer an apology and explanation.
• Bouneshclupp (a green bean soup) and Gromperenzopp (a potato soup with leeks, egg yolks, and cream) are Luxembourg’s specialties.
•  Another traditional dish, The “Luxembourg Menu,” is a meat platter of cooked and smoked hams, pâté, and sausage served with hard-boiled eggs, pickles, and fresh tomatoes.
• Table manners are important in Luxembourg. While eating, do not rest your elbows on the table; your hands should be visible at all times and not in your lap. Most foods are eaten with utensils, even sandwiches. You hold your knife in your right hand and your fork in your left when eating. To communicate you have finished eating, lay your knife and fork parallel across the right side of your plate. If attending a formal affair, you will likely be shown to a particular seat.
• Guest etiquette dictates you must always bring a gift if invited to someone’s home; chocolates or flowers are ideal. Give flowers in odd numbers (but never 13), and don’t bring chrysanthemums, as they are reserved for funerals.
• Smoking in Luxembourg is prevalent. Smoking in closed public spaces, including bars and cafes, is banned. You can not smoke with children in the car or on the playground. You will be fined for any smoking violation.
• Luxembourg is one of the world’s safest countries and the safest country to visit in Europe. It is economically and politically stable.

When to go to Luxembourg

Luxembourg, a small land-locked country between Belgium, France, and Germany, has a moderately continental climate, with cold winters and mild summers.

Luxembourg’s best time is mid-May to mid-September since it is the mildest weather month. In this period, the temperature is generally pleasant, and the weather is variable; the sun alternates with cloudy skies. Rain and thunderstorms are always possible so prepare for them.

The shoulder season, April to early May and October, will help you avoid crowds from a travel perspective. However, Luxembourg is not known for being as packed as other E.U. countries.

Winters are pretty cold and wet with short days. Since walking Luxembourg City is an essential element of your visit, this might be hindered.

Travel guides dedicated to Luxembourg are rare, but we found good info in the Lonely Planet guide. Mapped road network with distances and designations for major highways to the off-the-beaten-path roads. City maps provide excellent details. Google Translate We use this often to practice the proper pronunciation of words. Two of the three languages spoken, German and French, in Luxembourg, are available. As we always encourage, learning the basics of greeting and thanking people in the local language is essential. Google Translate was an easy app to use. If needed, you can enter text in English, which will speak back in whatever language you need to aid in communicating with locals. Furthermore, it came in very handy to translate text into images instantly.

AAA forecasts nearly 44M travelers for Memorial Day weekend: See best times to travel

Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of summer, which means people will be flooding highways and airports this weekend looking to get away for some rest and relaxation.

The American Automobile Association is projecting nearly 44 million travelers will head 50 miles or more from home over the Memorial Day holiday travel period, which is defined by the organization as the five-day period from Thursday, May 23 to Monday, May 27.

"We haven't seen Memorial Day weekend travel numbers like these in almost 20 years," said Paula Twidale, senior vice president of AAA Travel, in a news release. "We're projecting an additional one million travelers this holiday weekend compared to 2019, which not only means we're exceeding pre-pandemic levels but also signals a very busy summer travel season ahead."

The organization projects over 38 million people will travel by car over Memorial Day weekend, over 3.5 million will travel by air and nearly 2 million will travel by other modes of transportation, including buses, cruises and trains.

The 38 million drivers is the highest number for Memorial Day since AAA began tracking data in 2000 and is up 4% compared to last year. The 3.5 million air travelers is an increase of nearly 5% over last year and, according to AAA, this will be the most crowded Memorial Day weekend at airports since 2005.

Drivers leaving Thursday or Friday should hit the road early to avoid mixing with commuters, AAA said, citing data from transportation data and insights provider INRIX. Drivers going back home Sunday or Monday should avoid the afternoon hours when return trips will peak.

“Travel times are expected to be up to 90% longer than normal. Travelers should stay up to date on traffic apps, 511 services, and local news stations to avoid sitting in traffic longer than necessary,” said Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX, in the news release.

Here's a breakdown of the best and worst times to travel by car depending on which day you are traveling:

Thursday, May 23

• Best travel time: Before 11 a.m. and after 7 p.m.
• Worst travel time: Between noon and 6 p.m.

Friday, May 24

• Best travel time: Before 11 a.m. and after 8 p.m.
• Worst travel time: Between noon and 7 p.m.

Saturday, May 25

• Best travel time: Before 1 p.m. and after 6 p.m.
• Worst travel time: Between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.

Sunday, May 26

• Best travel time: Before 1 p.m.
• Worst travel time: Between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Monday, May 27

• Best travel time: After 7 p.m.

Gas prices continue to decrease heading into Memorial Day weekend

According to AAA, the national average for a gallon of gasoline has fallen four cents since last week, to $3.60. The primary reasons are weak domestic demand and oil costs below $80 a barrel, according to the organization.

“Barring some unforeseen event, this pokey drop in pump prices is not likely to change anytime soon,” said Andrew Gross, AAA spokesperson, in a news release. “There are seven states with county gas averages at less than $3 a gallon. This trend will likely accelerate as more gas outlets east of the Rockies drop their prices.”

This Memorial Day weekend, drivers can expect similar gas prices as last year when the national average was about $3.57.

"Pump prices rose this spring but have held somewhat steady in recent weeks," AAA said in the news release, while also noting that prices may creep higher as the summer driving season gets underway.

The wildcard remains the cost of oil, according to the organization, and unlike last year, there are now two wars – in the Middle East and Ukraine – that could roil the oil market.

In view of the Russian military aggression against Ukraine, the Luxembourg Government strongly advises its citizens against all travel to Russia. Those residing or travelling in Russia should strongly consider departing Russia if their presence is not essential and while limited commercial travel options remain. In light of the current unpredictable and volatile situation, travel connections with Russia are strongly impacted. Due to the increasing restrictions on travel options between Russia and Europe, there continues to be a real risk of being stranded in Russia for an indefinite period. Furthermore, as Mastercard and Visa have suspended their operations in Russia, we draw the attention to the fact that it is not possible to access funds through Russian banks or to make payments in Russia with non-Russian credit/debit cards.

The Government also calls on Luxembourg nationals in Russia to be extra cautious. They are advised to keep themselves informed of developments, avoid mass gatherings and follow the instructions of the authorities. It is also recalled that photographing or filming military equipment or installations is strictly prohibited in Russia.

Information for double nationals

On 21 September the Russian authorities announced a military mobilization with immediate effect. All double nationals holding both Luxembourg and Russian citizenship should be aware that the Russian authorities only recognize their Russian nationality. Thus, should they be drafted, they will not be able to request consular protection alleging double nationality. Should they wish to leave Russia, they should make arrangements as soon as possible given the limited travel options available.

Shiels: George H.W. Bush’s travels and character revealed in presidential books

J ean Becker spent 25 years as chief of staff for the late former President George H.W. Bush after he left the White House. She was a USA Today reporter who met Bush’s wife Barbara while editing a column for her during the 1988 campaign. After the election, Becker accepted a position in the First Lady’s press office during the president’s four-year tenure.

Becker’s devotion to the Bushes never ended, even to this day. She has published her second book celebrating the Bush legacy: “Character Matters…and other Life Lessons from George H.W. Bush.”

Becker’s first book: “The Man I Knew,” was her memoir of serving, which meant keeping up, with former President Bush.

“The man was the most energetic, outgoing person any of us ever knew,” Becker said. The fun, frenetic activity was also evidenced in the book I co-authored for President Bush’s golf professional and fishing buddy Ken Raynor, titled “I Call Him Mr. President – Stories of Golf Fishing and Life with my Friend George H.W. Bush.” Raynor’s book recounts Bushes trips to destinations such as St. Andrews, Scotland; the Arctic Circle; Puerto Rico; a cruise through the Greek Isles; and various PGA Tour events.

Becker worked closely with the busy President Bush, therefore she needed to spend summers in Maine and winters in Houston, where the Bushes lived in the Tanglewood neighborhood – where, just as in Kennebunkport, they received friends, celebrities and world leaders when they weren’t on the move. 

Former British Prime Minister John Major is one of those who contributed a story for Becker’s “Character Matters.” I once spotted him walking through the George H.W. Bush Library and Museum, the tourist destination in College Station, Texas, near Houston, where the former President and First Lady are laid to rest. Presidential vehicles are on display, including “Fidelity,” one of the speedboats Bush piloted around the Atlantic off Walkers Point, his Kennebunkport, Maine compound of homes, a site which also draws tourists.

Russian President Vladimir Putin visited the #43rd President George W. Bush – and therefore his father, the #41st President – at Walker’s Point, Becker recalled wistfully with a joke.

“We were standing on the pier with the Atlantic Ocean right behind us. If I knew then what I know now, how easy it would have been to ‘accidentally’ push Putin into the ocean. Think of all the lives I could have saved! But I probably would have been shot.”

She revealed Putin and his Russian team were hosted in one of the Bush family homes on Walker’s Point called The Bungalow. “After they left, Mrs. Bush called the staff in to see they had totally trashed the house. There was a rotting fish in the kitchen and cigarette butts and, not to continue a stereotype: a lot of empty vodka bottles.”

Becker says President Joe Biden and Bush were friends. Bush planned to catch up with then vice-president Biden with a courtesy call to his hotel during a Biden trip to Houston – Bush’s hometown. The humble Bush squawked when Biden, mortified, respectfully suggested, though an aide, that protocol dictated he travel to former Bush’s home or office to greet him, a former president – not the other way around.

Becker says the humble Bush, in a phone call, told Biden’s nervous aide: “Here’s the problem young man. The vice-president has a motorcade that won’t even fit into my neighborhood. I have a two-car motorcade. This is logistics. I will go call on the vice-president, and you tell Joe that I said to ‘calm down.’”

American Airlines Backtracks, Will Allow Travel Agency Customers to Keep Earning Miles

American Airlines tried to drag an entrenched industry toward the airline's vision of a more productive distribution future. But the financial hit stung.

Online and offline travel agencies had faced a July 11 deadline: That’s when flyers buying American Airlines tickets on certain booking sites would have no longer been able to earn AAdvantage Miles.

But American Airlines CEO Robert Isom said Wednesday that the airline has dropped the idea. It was part of an overall retreat in American’s direct-booking strategy as it faces softness in close-in bookings and a weaker financial outlook.

“Next month, we were going to differentiate who earned AAdvantage Miles and who didn’t, based on where they booked. That’s off,” Isom told investors and analysts at a Bernstein conference. “We’re not doing that because it would create confusion and disruption for our end customer, and we’re going to make sure that we take care. We’re listening to feedback.”

The plan had been that the airline would designate “preferred agencies” — who were required to book at least 30% of their flights through American’s New Distribution Capability — and customers of these online and offline travel agencies would have been able to continue to earn AAdvantage miles when buying tickets on these third-party sites.

Travel agencies that didn’t get the airline’s stamp of approval faced the prospect of losing lots of customers who would have had to book American flights on AA.com or a preferred agency.

The airline initially said it would designate preferred agencies by May 1, and later moved that deadline to July 11.

Travel Agency Reaction

Many agencies had no clue if they were going to make the cut.

Zane Kerby, president and CEO of the American Society of Travel Advisors, had fought the airline’s distribution policies, and applauded the airline’s reversal.

“I’m grateful for American Airlines’ renewed recognition of the essential role that travel advisors play in facilitating air travel for our shared customers,” Kerby said. “I want to extend my thanks to American Airlines CEO Robert Isom for acknowledging its previous approach was flawed. Reversing the decision to withhold AAdvantage points and miles for agency bookings is a testament to the firm position that travel agencies hold in the airline distribution channel.”

Kerby said he welcomed the opportunity to work with American Airlines on a “responsible implementation of its NDC program.”

When the news came, ASTA was coincidentally conducting it annual national conference in Dallas, in the airline’s Fort Worth headquarters back yard.

American hasn’t definitively given up on direct distribution, however.

“We’re learning and adapting,” Isom said. “We know that NDC, modern retailing provides a better experience for the end customer. And we know that we will get there over time, but we have to go about it differently. We’re going to make it easier, we’re going to execute better and we’re going to do a lot more to try to bring people along with us.”
