Can a Wristband Really Get Rid of Nausea and Motion Sickness?

Here’s what we learned about three types of anti-nausea devices.

anti nausea devices

We may earn commission from links on this page, but we only recommend products we back. Why Trust Us?

Complicating matters is the fact that the placebo effect is common with nausea —people often feel better simply because they believe a treatment is working, not because a reliable mechanism is involved.

For those who want to avoid over-the-counter medications like Dramamine, there are a dozen or so anti-nausea wearables on the market. Here’s what we learned about three types. (One caveat: If you’re newly feeling ill, talk to your doctor first to make sure nothing serious is going on.)

Sea-Band Adult Wristband Natural Nausea Relief

Sea-Band Adult Wristband Natural Nausea Relief

What they are: Wristbands use acupressure (pressure is applied to specific points along meridians on the body to keep energy owing evenly) to provide relief. A band maintains steady pressure on your P6 point, located on your inner arm just below your wrist; this stimulates the median nerve, interrupting “I’m sick” messages sent between the brain and the belly.

What we know: A 2018 study in the journal Cancer found that these types of bands did not significantly reduce nausea in pediatric cancer patients receiving chemo. But older studies showed that they reduced migraine-induced nausea as well as the frequency and severity of nausea in pregnant women.

Should you try it? Sure—the bands are safe and inexpensive. Dr. Szarka says that stimulating the P6 point can work as well as anti-nausea medications for some patients whose nausea is due to motion sickness or anesthesia.

Brands to check out: Sea-Bands are washable elastic bands. Psi Bands are plastic bands with adjustable pressure. Both can be purchased in stores or online ($10 to $15).

Acustimulation Bracelets

Reliefband 1.5 for motion & morning sickness.

Reliefband 1.5 for Motion & Morning Sickness

What they are: Battery-powered wristbands that use electrical pulses to stimulate the median nerve, disrupting nausea signals (you apply a conductivity gel on your wrist’s P6 point before slipping one on). You can adjust pulse strength depending on how sick you feel.

What we know: Acustimulation looks promising, but research is slim. One small study in the journal Military Medicine found that it prevented nausea among test subjects in a driving simulation. A review of 29 studies turned up mixed results on its ability to ease pregnancy-related nausea.

Should you try it? The fact that it’s drug- and side effect–free makes it an attractive option. “There’s little medical risk, and some people do find the bracelets helpful,” says David Odell, M.D., an assistant professor of thoracic surgery at Northwestern Medicine. But they aren’t cheap.

Brands to check out: Reliefband ($100 to $175, plus the cost of gel refills).

MotionCure Neck Brace

MotionCure Neck Brace

What it is: A battery-powered wrap resembling a travel pillow, marketed to treat nausea caused by “sensory mismatch”—that is, when your eyes and inner ear detect movement while you’re still. Electrical pulses and frequencies are sent to the inner ear as well as the median and vagus nerves in the back of the neck; this is meant to break up nausea signals between the brain and the gastric system.

What we know: There’s no conclusion on whether targeting these areas alleviates nausea from motion sickness.

Should you try it? It is meant only for nausea caused by motion sickness, so it probably won’t help with nausea due to other causes. It does, however, come with a money-back guarantee.

Brands to check out: MotionCure has cornered the market on this one (about $150 online).

The Best Resistance Bands For Travel and How to Use Them

Jan 12 The Best Resistance Bands For Travel and How to Use Them

Resistance bands are a great workout tool for travelers..

Resistance bands are one of the most underrated workout tools out there.

You’ll often find them neglected in a corner of the gym, but they are a great addition to most fitness routines.

From isolation exercises to bodyweight workouts, adding resistance bands will increase tension and improve muscle growth, while burning extra calories.

The best part of this resistance band praise is that they’re perfect for traveling. They’re small and light, meaning you can pack them in your carry-on and take them with you on the road.

So the next time you find yourself without an adequate gym (an all-too-common occurrence for travelers), just take your resistance bands out and get after it in your hotel room or outside.

Let’s take a look at the best resistance bands and how you can use them to get a great workout while you travel.

The Best Resistance Bands For Travelers

Resistance bands are a great addition to bodyweight exercises, making the movements more difficult and therefore increasing your strength.

So where to get started?

First, let's dive into the different types of resistance bands that you can bring with you while you travel. Then we'll get into how to use them.

Black Mountain Resistance Band Set ($28)

The Black Mountain Resistance Band Set is a top-seller on Amazon. It’s light enough to travel with and supports many different workout routines.

The five-piece set includes bands with interchangeable handles, a door anchor, an ankle strap, and five bands with a range of resistance.

Tribe Premium Resistance Band Set ($21)

The Tribe 11 Piece Premium Resistance Band Set includes five resistance bands that are color-coded to distinguish their weight tension— Yellow (5 lbs), Green (15 lbs), Red (20 lbs), Blue (30 lbs), and Black 35 (lbs) and a Pro Accessories kit that has two cushioned soft-grip handles, a door-safe anchor, two soft ankle straps, and a water-resistant carrying bag.

Rogue Fitness Monster Bands ($68)

Rogue makes some of the highest-quality fitness equipment you'll find. You can order their resistance bands individually, in pairs, or as a full set.

There are eight color-coded versions of their natural latex rubber stretch bands to choose from, each measuring 41” in length, but varying in width, thickness, and overall resistance.

Getting Started

Resistance bands are a great place to start for anyone new to strength training.

First, you need to choose the right bands. Resistance increases at the end of a movement, so band choice will depend equally on two things: your fitness level and the type of movement you are doing.

Be sure to choose bands that will provide enough resistance while training but are still light enough to allow you to maintain proper form throughout.

Go for a light, medium, and heavy band because you'll find yourself using each one with different muscle groups.

If you choose to go with the Black Mountain Resistance Band Set or a complete set of the Rogue Fitness Monster Bands, you will have a wide enough range of resistance to cover any fitness level.

The Full Body Resistance Band Workout

Resistance band workouts like the one below can be done right in your hotel room or at home.

Perform the workout as a circuit, meaning do one set of each exercise, then another round of the same, and so on until you have completed three rounds (or three sets of each exercise).

Hit each exercise name for a video demonstration.

Bicep Curls

Stand with your feet together on the resistance band to keep it anchored. Grip the other end of the band with both hands, palms up.

Simultaneously bend both elbows and pull the band up towards your upper chest. Lower the band back down to the starting position slowly, straightening both your arms.

Perform three sets of 15 reps.

Grasp the band on both ends and keep it anchored down by standing on it. Knees should be slightly bent and your head and chest should be up. Stand straight up and keep your back straight. The bands will be at waist level when you complete the movement.

Do three sets of 10 reps.

Place your feet on the band and hold the other end (or handles) with an overhand grip, keeping your hands around shoulder height.

Lower yourself down as if you are placing your butt onto a chair. Get your quads below parallel to the floor. Explode up and return to the standing position, pressing through your heels.

Complete three sets of 10 to 12 reps.

Resistance bands make push-ups more challenging.

Wrap the resistance band around your upper back and hold each end down with your hands as you get into the push-up position. Perform the push-up movement as you normally would but expect increased resistance at the top.

Perform three sets of 10-20 reps.

Band Pull-Aparts

Pull the bands apart while keeping chest and shoulders stable and without arching your back.

Do three sets of 10 to 15 reps.

33 Resistance Band Exercises You Can Do Literally Anywhere

Stretching With Bands

You can also use resistance bands to deepen your stretches and improve your flexibility.

The best time to stretch is after a workout, when your muscles are already warmed up. Stretch to your level of comfort and hold each stretch for ten to twenty seconds.

Here are three stretches you can do.

Hamstring Stretch

Lie on the floor and loop band around the right foot, grabbing onto the bands closer to your foot to create tension. Straighten the right leg as much as you comfortably can while keeping the left leg bent on the floor. Gently pull the right leg towards you, stretching the back of the leg. Switch sides.

Hip Stretch

Lie on the floor and loop the band around the right foot, grabbing onto the bands with the opposite hand. Straighten the left leg out on the floor and gently lower the right leg across the body and to the left as low as you can go feeling a stretch in the right hip and glute. Switch sides.

Chest Stretch

Grip the band with hands a few inches apart. Pull your arms out and down as low as you can to stretch the chest.

Bottom Line

Resistance bands are perfect for staying fit while traveling. Add them to bodyweight exercises to increase resistance and give yourself an added challenge or use them for pulling movements that are often difficult to do without weights or a pull-up bar.

Anti-Nausea Wristbands

Using Sea Bands

Our readers swear by sea bands when traveling on a cruise to avoid sea sickness. One reader says, “I used them on our cruise when the seas got rough. I was the only one in our party who did not get sick.”

Sea bands are great if you suffer from motion sickness caused by waves. Several of our female explorers also like to use sea bands when traveling on planes, ferries, and in the car.

One reader swears by them. “I get travel sickness when I go by car, boat, bus, train, and plane, and my band works brilliantly.”

Another reader says, “I have used them for about 20 years and feel like they work great for me. I have never used them on a cruise, but I use them on planes, ferries, and when traveling by car.” Sea bands are a fantastic solution for solving motion sickness by all travel methods, not just on a cruise!

Sea bands are also commonly used by our readers who suffer from nausea throughout pregnancy. Several readers share how they “used them for morning sickness when pregnant, seemed to ease the nausea.”

I also use sea bands when traveling by car to prevent sickness and also for short (non-choppy) boat rides. For the price, it’s worth a try!

Find out everything you need to pack in your travel toiletries kit!

How Do Sea Bands Work?

A sea band is a drug-free alternative treatment for the treatment of motion sickness. The band has a plastic stud attached to the inside of the wrist band. The stud exerts pressure and stimulates the acupressure point (or the Nei-Kuan point) on your wrist.

Research has proven that pressure on this point relieves nausea and vomiting, therefore reducing the symptoms of motion sickness. You should wear your sea band as a preventative measure before the onset of nausea, but you could also put it on once you start to feel poorly.

Find out what to include on a travel first aid kit list !

Our Readers’ Sea Band Reviews

Sea-Band Wristband Natural Nausea Relief

The Sea-Band is designed to provide natural, drug-free nausea relief through acupressure. You can throw the band in the wash and reuse it. Put your band on your wrist before you start traveling or once you start feeling ill. Relief should begin as quickly as five minutes.

One reader says, “I am extremely sensitive to motion. I wore them on a seven-day cruise and for the first time didn’t feel sick at all, even when the seas were rough. Then I realized I could try them in the car while traveling so that I could read or work, and they worked! Without sea bands, I can’t even look down at my phone for three minutes without feeling like I’m going to throw up, but with sea bands, I am completely fine.”

Cease Sickness Beads Stylish Motion Sickness Bracelets

Cease Sickness Beads Motion Sickness Bracelets

Cease Sickness Beads bracelets work the same way as a sea band, by applying acupressure to your wrist, but in a fashionable alternative. Each bracelet is custom designed to fit your individual wrist size for maximum results.

You get to choose the color of your beads from red, blue, green, purple, and silver. This perfect travel accessory prevents motion sickness and is an awesome finishing touch to your outfit.

One reader shares how she uses her Beads bracelet whenever she travels on a cruise. “They are a more stylish option and work the same way as sea bands.”

Another reader says she prefers the bracelet because “it is so much more stylish; the sea bands are quite ugly.”

Reliefband 1.5 for Motion & Morning Sickness

The Reliefband is a drug-free therapy that can be turned on and off when required. It is a reusable therapeutic device in which you change the battery when needed. It works by altering your nerve activity through targeted delivery of gentle pulses to the underside of your wrist.

One reader recommends using a Reliefband. “These are expensive, but I would highly recommend them. I have been using mine for over eight years, and I get sickness from everything that involves motion. The Reliefband completely does away with any feeling of motion sickness. I can’t tell you how much this has changed my life.”

It’s a more expensive option, but definitely worth the investment if you frequently suffer from motion sickness!

Other Essentials for Traveling with Sea Sickness

There are other alternatives to sea bands if you suffer from seasickness or for those days when the sea is particularly rough.

best-sea-bands

MQ® Motion Sickness Patch

The MQ Motion Sickness Patch is a natural herb treatment that you attach 10 minutes before travel. One reader says, “I always travel with seasickness patches. Each one lasts three days, so you only need to pack a couple of them.”

Another reader uses sea band “when it’s not too rough. But if I’m in really rough water, I need a patch to prevent seasickness.” Another reader says,  “I prefer to use patches, and they are a life-changer for me.”

See our list of the best toiletry bags !

best-sea-bands

You can avoid suffering from motion sicknesses with motion sickness pills. You must take these pills one hour before getting on a boat or in a car for them to work. THEY WILL NOT work once you feel sick.

One reader says, “Sea bands work for me except on a particularly rough day, when I have to take motion sickness tablets as well.”

Several readers recommend Bonine Motion Sickness Tablets because “it is less drowsy causing form of Dramamine.”

One reader uses a sea band and Bonine before traveling on a road trip and “both together (are) magical!”

These are so good. I wish I had seen them prior to my first cruise as I was so sick until the ship Dr gave me some patches to wear.

Gracie mercer

The sea wrist bands were a game changer for me! I get motion sick very easily and found these to work very well on all types of transportation and kept me from getting sick. They aren’t the most fashionable thing you can wear but I only wore them when I needed them. I highly recommend giving them a try on your next trip!

Sophie cripe

The simple relief bands don’t work. The 1.5 ones do work. Bonine works but affects my bladder.

Alex

Thank you for sharing your experiences of the sea bands with us 🙂

Kris Copeland

So useful. Am going to order for my son right away! Thanks!

Hoping to try some of these remedies out for a plane! I don’t get seasick, but I do get airsick.

Dawn

Thank for you very informative site. Going on my first cruise in summer of 2023. Will be using you ideas for that trip.

Mary D.

I have an upcoming cruise & although I didn’t get sick in the past, I don’t want to take any chances. I purchased the quest beads recommended here. Hope I won’t need to use it!

Beth

I would recommend talking to your doctor. Have a plan to use scopolamine patches if everything else fails Green apples, other forms of ginger are also good to try.

The Best Resistance Bands

The author using resistance bands that are attached to a door frame.

By Amy Roberts

Resistance bands are versatile strength training tools. They’re lightweight and portable, and they cost less than a month’s membership at most gyms, yet they can significantly enhance strength training workouts.

We considered 24 sets of bands and tested 12, and found that the Bodylastics Stackable Tube Resistance Bands are the best—and should be the safest—traditional tube-and-handle bands. If you’re looking for superbands for pull-up assistance or mini bands for physical therapy exercises , we have picks for those, too.

Everything we recommend

Perform Better Exercise Mini Bands

The best mini-band set.

For rehab or prehab, these mini bands are of higher quality and offer greater utility than the competition.

Types of resistance bands

These are by far the most popular kind of resistance bands, as they’re the simplest to anchor and grip.

Used most often for assisted pull-ups, superbands are large continuous loop bands without handles.

Another type of loop bands without handles, mini bands are small continuous bands most useful for placing around a limb or limbs.

If you’re unsure whether you’ll use handled tubes or superbands more often, consider our upgrade pick, which comes with a mini band.

The Bodylastics Stackable Tube Resistance Bands have built-in safety guards not seen in any other bands we tested: Woven cords tucked inside the tubes are meant to prevent overstretching (a common reason why bands break), and should also avert a rebound snap if a tube splits. In addition to five bands of increasing resistances (which can be used in combination to provide up to a claimed 96 pounds), the set includes a door anchor for creating points at various heights to pull or press against, two grippy handles, and two padded ankle straps. This is a pretty common setup, but we found the Bodylastics kit to be overall higher quality than the competition, and the company is one of only two we considered that sells additional tubes in higher tensions. This five-band kit is easy to use and comes with a detailed instruction manual, including links to free exercise demonstration videos, as well as subscription-based workouts on the company’s website and app.

If our pick is unavailable, we recommend the GoFit ProGym Extreme . This kit includes four interchangeable tube bands of increasing resistances that can be used in combination (totaling a claimed 140 pounds), plus two rubberized handles, two padded ankle straps, two door anchors, a spiral-bound manual, and the best storage bag we’ve seen to hold it all. GoFit’s tubes aren’t reinforced the way our pick’s are, and the company offers fewer training materials. We liked that GoFit includes two sturdy door anchors to our pick’s one, as it means you don’t have to move the anchor as often between exercises.

If you use resistance bands as your primary strength training tool, consider the Resistance Band Training Economy Fitness Package . Trainers we consulted universally chose this as their favorite kit. Instead of tubes, its four superbands—two each of two resistance levels—are large, continuous rubber loops that are more durable and longer-lasting than most molded tubes. The kit comes with two foam-covered handles, which can be clipped onto the bands to give them similar utility as a tube set, plus a versatile anchor that you can use either in a doorjamb or looped around a stationary object (say, a fence pole) for training indoors or out. The bands alone can be used for assisted pull-ups or for adding resistance to some exercises. These bands provide more resistance than most tubes, and can be stacked for even more tension. The kit includes one 13-inch mini band and a four-week starter workout program.

Serious Steel Assisted Pull-Up, Resistance, and Stretch Bands are continuous latex loops rather than molded tubes. Like most superbands, Serious Steel’s are sold individually and in sets. The four-band set we tested included bands ranging from a claimed resistance of 5 pounds to 120 pounds, making them useful for assisted pull-up progressions as well as for stretching and adding resistance to some exercises. Depending on your needs, you may find the largest band in this set less useful; in that case, we suggest you consider the less-expensive set of three . Although a paper manual isn’t included, the 25-page PDF on the company’s website provides plenty of instruction to get you started. Finally, the bands have a powdery feel that makes them less slick to grip than other superbands we tested.

With a diameter of 10 inches, compared with other mini bands’ 12 inches, the Perform Better Exercise Mini Bands  provide more tension than the competition throughout our test exercises’ ranges of motion because their tension kicks in sooner thanks to the shorter length. For example, for exercises that require putting a band around both of your legs at the same time, the Perform Better bands feel more snug than the competition from the start, leaving little to no slack to take up in the exercise movement before the tension begins. Though larger people may have a little more trouble getting into them, the 5-foot-11, 235-pound trainer we enlisted was able to do it. And although the Perform Better set comes with four bands to most others’ five, it is “missing” the lightest band, which on its own isn’t that functional for most people.

The research

Why you should trust us, who this is for, which resistance band should you use, how we picked, how we tested, our pick: bodylastics stackable tube resistance bands, flaws but not dealbreakers, runner-up: gofit progym extreme, upgrade pick: resistance band training economy fitness package, also great: serious steel assisted pull-up, resistance, and stretch bands, also great: perform better exercise mini bands, other good resistance bands, the competition.

To better understand the utility of resistance bands, I talked to William Kraemer, PhD, a professor of human sciences at The Ohio State University, and author of the American College of Sports Medicine’s brochure on resistance band training. I also interviewed Dave Schmitz, a physical therapist and personal trainer who has spent the last two decades coaching clients using resistance bands. In 2010, he launched a retail website, Resistance Band Training , where he sells superbands and accessories (including a set that we have long recommended).

Resistance bands offer an easy way to challenge your strength without the clutter and expense of bulky, heavy weights. By stretching against force in pushing or pulling exercises, these rubbery tubes or flat loops add load both on the action and on the return. This means you can effectively get stronger without having to lift heavy things against gravity, and—because the bands themselves require a bit of control to handle—improve stabilization.

You can also use certain bands (typically, superbands) to help unload certain bodyweight exercises, such as pull-ups and push-ups, so that you can train through the full range of motion while building enough strength to no longer need an assist.

Finally, physical therapists often recommend that their rehab and prehab clients use bands (most often, mini bands) for adding light or targeted resistance to hip- or shoulder-strengthening exercises.

All resistance-band manufacturers make claims about the amount of tension each band provides, indicated in a range of pounds. But experts we interviewed said you should take those numbers with a grain of salt. “Resistance band training is based on an elastic component—as you stretch the bands, the resistance gets harder,” said The Ohio State University’s William Kraemer, PhD. “This means that the longer you stretch a band, the more resistance you get.” Because of this increasing tension, bands are best used for loading exercises that should get harder or tax the muscles most at the end of the range of motion. Things like presses and rows are well-suited to resistance bands; biceps curls, in which the muscle should be most taxed in the center of the movement, are less so.

Further, the weight numbers provided by the manufacturers vary wildly for bands that look and feel similar and measure the same, in terms of length and thickness, and some—especially the superbands—list enormous ranges for a single band, such as 50 to 120 pounds. “If you really want to measure your strength, you need to do it using weights,” Dave Schmitz of Resistance Band Training told us in a phone interview. “If you try to use bands to do that, you’ll be disappointed. There are too many variables going on that you can’t measure. With bands, you’re training to get the effect of getting strong, but not training to measure strength.”

What’s most important in choosing which bands to use while exercising, then, is to challenge yourself. If you can easily stretch the band to the end of its safe range—around one and a half to two times its resting length—for a million reps, you’re not getting much strength benefit. A good rule of thumb: Choose a band that you can handle with good form—and are able to control and not let snap back on the release of the movement—for three sets of 10 to 15 reps of any given exercise. If that’s too easy or becomes too easy, it’s time to increase your resistance.

Our picks for best resistance bands laying on the floor.

We looked at the three main types of resistance bands:

Interchangeable tubes can stack together and clip to a handle or ankle strap and be anchored to create a safe tension point for pulling or pushing. The tubes themselves are hollow inside, and may have reinforcements outside or in to help protect the tube from getting overstretched.

Superbands look like gigantic rubber bands. You can use them on their own or affix them to a bar or pole by looping one end around the bar and through the loop and pulling tight. Some companies sell handles and anchors separately, or as part of a set.

Mini bands are flat loops about a foot in diameter and usually 2 inches across. They’re commonly used by looping around a limb or limbs, such that another part of the body becomes the tension point.

We also assessed a few fabric-loop resistance bands, both sold in sets and as single bands, which are typically used for dynamic warm-ups, targeted lower-body workouts, and for delivering form cues during exercises like squats and deadlifts. Fabric bands can be a bit sturdier than their all-latex counterparts and are less apt to roll up or to tug on body hair.

For this guide, we chose sets rather than bands sold individually: The experts and trainers we interviewed stressed the importance of using different resistances for different exercises as well as the ability to increase resistance as you get stronger. If you are easily able to stretch any band to the end of its give in any given exercise (or need to do so in order to feel the effects of the exercise), not only are you not getting good strength adaptations in your muscles, you could also be compromising the band’s integrity by constantly pushing it to its potential breaking point.

Some tubed sets come with an anchor, which consists of a looped strap, typically made of woven nylon, and a large, covered plastic bead on the opposite end—you thread the loop end between the doorframe and door on its hinge side, then close (and lock, ideally) the door, so the bead is securely pinned on the far side of the door. You can then thread a tube or tubes through the loop. Some superband manufacturers sell separate anchors similar to the tube sets’.

To narrow the dozens of options per type, we considered customer reviews, cross-referenced with Fakespot.com , and editorial ones from the likes of BestProducts.com , BestReviews , and Heavy . We prioritized brands I’ve seen and used as a trainer over some of the lesser-known ones found on Amazon’s best-sellers list. (From my experience purchasing fitness equipment over the years, I’ve seen that certain brands can crop up, sell a bunch of products, then disappear into the Internet ether.) We also considered price, keeping in mind that most resistance bands will last for up to a year or so.

The author using resistance bands that are attached to a door frame.

To find the best bands for most workouts, I did several types of exercises with each set. During each exercise, I noted which band (or combination of bands) I used, if I experienced any issues with setup or during the movement itself, and how easy it was to transition between exercises. I also noted comfort of handles, stiffness of rubber, any odor, and overall user-friendliness. While testing the bands at the gym, I asked four other personal trainers for their professional opinions of the top contenders.

Before hitting the gym, I read through any instruction manuals that came with the bands or are available on the manufacturers’ websites, using my personal-training knowledge to determine if the advice is sound and useful. I also measured each band’s length (using a tape measure) and thickness (using calipers) to determine if they were sold as advertised and to gauge potential durability. This aided my attempts to better understand the manufacturers’ weight claims with regard to the resistance each band is said to generate.

Our pick for best resistance band, the Bodylastics Stackable Tube resistance band set.

One of the biggest concerns people have about training with resistance bands is the fear that the rubber could snap and potentially injure them. With an internal cord, the Bodylastics Stackable Tube Resistance Bands have a unique safety guard against overstretching, the most common reason for breakage. Indeed, if you stretch a band to its full length, you’ll feel the cord catch, but it won’t otherwise affect the workout. No other handled tube bands we tested have this feature.

The bands themselves appear to be well made, with heavy-duty components and reinforced stitching, attributes that are also highly praised in the overwhelmingly positive Amazon customer reviews (4.7 out of five stars across 7,000 reviews at this writing). They’re labeled on both ends with the estimated weight resistance, in pounds, that they’re intended to provide. Although those numbers don’t really mean much , the labels can help you quickly tell which band you’re handling. Like all the sets we tested, the Bodylastics kit provides ample resistance as well as plenty of tension combinations, from very light to quite heavy. The handles feel comfortable and secure in the hands, and were our favorites of all to hold. Bodylastics handles added the least extra length to the tubes, a good thing because too-long handle straps can affect some exercises by adding unnecessary slack that shortens the range of motion. The door anchor strap is padded with the same cushy neoprene of the ankle straps, which additionally appears to protect the bands from damage.

A close up of the grippy handles on our pick for best resistance bands.

The Bodylastics set comes with an in-depth manual, with printed URLs to free online videos on how to do everything from door installation to any of 34 exercises. These are grouped by muscles targeted and are also smartly photographed and described, including band placement and handle use. Altogether, this was the best manual accompanying any of the sets we tested, and its free workout instructions, available via the app and on YouTube, are a nice bonus, especially as no other tube set we tested explained how to put exercises together into a workout. For a fee, you can purchase additional Bodylastics workouts on the website .

The author using red Bodylastics tubes to do a bent-over row exercise.

Unlike most companies that sell resistance bands, Bodylastics also sells individual bands—to replace or supplement those included in this kit—separately. The bands have a lifetime warranty. Within the first 90 days of ownership, if any part of the system fails, the company will replace the part for free.

Our pick was the only set we tested that has small carabiners on each band, with one big ring on the handle/ankle strap to clip to. (Most sets have smaller rings on the bands and one big carabiner on the attachments.) The big rings on the Bodylastics bands can get in the way and poke or rub the forearms on certain exercises, such as chest or overhead presses, where the bands have to go back along the arms.

The ankle straps included with this kit are longer than most. If you prefer a snug fit, you may not be happy with this set.

Most door anchors that come with resistance bands are tough to get in place, and the Bodylastics one was no exception. Though it worked just fine, I’d be concerned that the thick foam that surrounds it might deteriorate faster than the materials on other door anchors we tested. Ingrid Skjong, a Wirecutter supervising editor, has owned the set for years and uses it once or twice a week. She says it’s holding up well, door anchor included.

Right out of the box, the metal of the carabiners on these bands appeared somewhat oxidized. This did not affect their function.

Our runner-up pick for best resistance bands, the GoFit ProGym Extreme.

The GoFit ProGym Extreme Set matches our pick in terms of overall quality of construction (minus the inner safety cord, which only our pick had). From the helpful manual to the nicer-than-most carrying bag to the rubberized handles that provide a comfortable and secure grip, the GoFit kit brings a professional-grade feel to your at-home workout. Plus, its ankle straps can adjust much tighter than those included with our pick, providing a more secure feel (though as one otherwise satisfied Amazon customer pointed out , they are too short if you want to use them around, say, your thighs). The included door anchors, a large bead stitched into wide nylon strap, also seem a bit more durable than the Bodylastics’ foam-covered one, and with two, you can place them at different levels so you don’t have to make frequent adjustments mid-workout. However, the heavily reinforced straps were a bit harder to fit into a doorjamb compared with others we tested.

The GoFit set comes with four bands rather than the typical five. Based on my thickness measurements, it’s “missing” only the very lightest one. This is probably not a big deal for most people. However, in my estimation, it reduces the total load you can create using all the bands at once (a curiosity, given that GoFit’s total claimed resistance load of 140 pounds is significantly more than the 96 pounds claimed by Bodylastics). Like the bands included in our pick, these bands are conveniently labeled at both ends.

The GoFit anchor laying next to the Bodylastics anchor for comparison.

GoFit’s glossy manual is thorough, if not quite as detailed as Bodylastics’s. The 27 included exercises are clearly explained, and organized by anchor location rather than body part. In a way, this makes sense, as it’s definitely annoying—not to mention workout-disrupting—to have to move the anchor when transitioning from one exercise to the next. Then again, as the GoFit set comes with two anchors, this is less of an issue. And with little indication to the reader of what muscles each exercise targets (save those named for body parts, like chest press), it may not be as useful for someone less familiar with working out using bands. GoFit provides a handful of structured workouts on its website , which can help you get oriented.

The author doing a kneeling lat pulldown exercise with GoFit bands attached to a doorframe.

One of the trainers we consulted owns and uses this set with his clients, and said it has held up nicely.

Our upgrade pick for best resistance bands, the Resistance Band Training Economy Fitness Package.

If you want the versatility of both handled tubes and superbands, the Resistance Band Training Economy Fitness Package is the set to get. By combining continuous-loop superbands with handles and an anchor that can be used indoors or out, you get the best of both the handled tubes and ultra-durable superbands in one kit. Other superband manufacturers sell handles and anchors separately, but the workout instructions on Resistance Band Training’s website are superior.

The kit comes with four bands, two of the red “small” and two of the black “medium.” Used individually or in combination, you’ll get loads that are similar to the middle range on most handled tube sets up to well past the top end. The bands are made by overlayering and fusing many sheets of thin latex around a mandrel, which the American College of Sports Medicine says is the most durable fabrication. Whereas most handled tube bands are meant to last around a year, Resistance Band Training says its bands should last two to three years, when used according to the company’s instructions.

A close up of the foam-covered handles on our upgrade pick for best resistance bands.

The hefty foam-padded handles clip onto the bands easily with carabiners, and the anchor’s design is really smart: You can either wedge it between your door and the frame, or you can loop it around a stationary object like a fence pole or heavy gym equipment to use it outdoors or in the gym. The anchor does add a bit of length to the band, though, so you’ll need more floor space indoors than when using a tube set. You can also use the bands without the included handles by gripping them in your hands directly or looping them around your limbs, which isn’t as comfortable as using handles or ankle straps but allows for additional exercise options.

When used to assist pull-ups, I thought not having much heavier bands could make this set less versatile in terms of progression. I was wrong; it’s actually just as good if not better. With a separate superband on each foot, your weight is better balanced, and using the two medium black bands felt to me to be the same amount of support as one mega band from another kit we tested.

The author using two Resistance Band Training superbands under each foot while using a pull-up bar.

Resistance Band Training offers a breadth of instruction through its website and YouTube channel . A huge hurdle for exercising with bands (and really, exercising in general) is simply not knowing how to do it. The consensus among trainers I consulted was that this kit is a good value despite its higher price, but only if you’re motivated to use it.

A close up of the Serious Steel resistance bands.

Anyone who has ever set foot in a CrossFit gym is likely to have encountered superbands. Like the bands of our upgrade pick, Serious Steel Assisted Pull-Up, Resistance, and Stretch Bands are made of overlayered and fused sheets of latex, making them more durable than most molded loops. At this writing, these bands have rating of 4.7 out of five stars across about 850 reviews on Amazon, and customers cite their durability as a top attribute.

A close up of the seam on a Serious Steel resistance band.

The Serious Steel set, like some other superband kits, comes with four bands of increasing size. For assisting pull-ups, three bands did the job well at increasing intervals, but the largest one pulled me extremely off-center and felt like it was going to slingshot my 122-pound body through the ceiling.

The author using Serious Steel resistance bands to assist with pull-ups.

This largest band’s heft is probably overkill for most people, and after playing around with these and other superbands, I would recommend that if you require a lot of assistance (or want a lot of resistance for other exercises), you use two of the smaller bands, rather than this large one. If you’re unlikely to use, or grow into, this heftiest band, you can buy the less expensive three-band set . Neither set comes with a printed manual, but a 25-page PDF on the company’s website is plenty explanatory, including setup instructions and 40-plus photographed exercises and stretches, grouped by exercise type.

Compared with those in another superband kit we tested, Serious Steel’s bands were of uniform length; stretched more smoothly; had a nice tactile, powdery grip; and, surprisingly, even had a pleasant, vanilla-y scent. Although they are more expensive than some other superbands we considered, we’re confident their higher quality is worth the added cost.

A close up of the Perform Better mini resistance bands.

You’d be hard pressed to find a modern physical therapy clinic without some sort of mini bands, and with their low cost, it’s not a huge investment to buy your own for at-home exercises. The Perform Better Exercise Mini Bands were the best we tested. They actually did perform better, starting with the simple fact that they are shorter—with a folded length of 10 inches to most others’ 12 inches—and can therefore provide resistance sooner in any range of motion, something that several Amazon reviewers also praised. Though the smaller loop can be harder to fit both legs in, a 5-foot-11, 235-pound trainer didn’t mind.

Two differently sized Perform Better mini resistance bands.

This set comes with four bands to other sets’ five, but the “missing” one is the lowest resistance, which is unnecessary for most people. But even at comparable weights, the Perform Better bands generally feel harder to use on account of their shorter length, so if you need much lower resistance for certain rehab exercises, you may prefer the company’s 12-inch-diameter XL Bands , or bands from the Fit Simplify set we tested. (If you want mini bands with higher resistance, we have a recommendation for that too.) Perform Better’s included poster-like instruction sheet has photos and clear descriptions of seven common mini-band exercises.

The author stretching a Perform Better mini resistance band between her arms.

One complaint we heard about this type of bands in general is that they tend to roll up and tug on body hair. If the possibility of inadvertent pinching is a concern for you, we recommend wearing sleeves or pants while using mini bands.

We’ve noticed a few customer reviewers on Amazon (including those who have given the Perform Better bands a high rating) remarking that their bands snapped after just a few weeks or months of use .

If you’re looking for a fabric band to use for dynamic warm-ups or for form cues during exercises like squats or deadlifts : The Mark Bell Sling Shot Hip Circle is a favorite of trainers and athletes alike. The band comes in three sizes based on body weight—medium (less than 150 pounds), large (151 to 260 pounds), and extra large (more than 260 pounds)—and has a tightly woven construction with secure stitching that feels sturdy. We tried the medium size, which is 13 inches long and 3 inches wide. This band, which according to the company is a Level 2 resistance, provides plenty of resistance during exercises like lateral steps, glute bridges, and squats. A tougher model, the Level 3 Hip Circle Max , is also available.

If you’d prefer mini bands with a larger diameter : The Fit Simplify Resistance Loop Exercise Bands is a popular, and inexpensive, five-loop set. It would be a fine choice if you want mini bands with a larger, 12-inch diameter or a lighter resistance than our pick offers.

Interchangeable tube resistance bands

A best seller on Amazon and a staple of editorial roundups, the Black Mountain Products Resistance Band Set let us down. The quality was lacking, from its foam-covered handles to the typo-ridden overly photocopied manual. This kit comes with only one ankle strap, in contrast to most sets’ two. And the carabiners on the ends of the bands need to be rotated into place every time you clip them onto the handles—very annoying.

An inexpensive tube set, the Fit Simplify Resistance Band Set hangs near the top of Amazon’s best-seller list, but it suffers from the same meh quality and annoying carabiner design as the similarly priced Black Mountain Products set. Its manual is slightly better, however, and includes advice on properly loading your exercises.

We couldn’t find a company website for the  Fitness Insanity Resistance Band Set , and some customers have noted that their sets arrived with pieces missing.

The Lifeline Variable Resistance Training Kit is reviewed favorably on Amazon, but it disappointed us. The unpadded, hard-plastic handles are uncomfortable to grip, and our set didn’t come with ankle straps or a manual, just a flyer prompting us to log on to Lifeline’s website and view its training videos. The tubes—which are made of layered latex and feel fairly sturdy—slip in and out of the base of the handles instead of being permanently connected to carabiners, as our picks are. We found that it took too long to switch them out between exercises.

Stroops Slastix are fabric-covered stackable tubes that are designed to be more durable. They are much more expensive and don’t come in sets like others, so we opted not to test them.

Though the Tribe Resistance Band Set is inexpensive and well-reviewed on Amazon, we nixed it because it appeared nearly identical to the Black Mountain Products and Fit Simplify tube sets, which disappointed us.

The 10-inch DynaPro Mini Precision Loop Bands come in five resistances (from light to extra-extra heavy). Oddly, the medium resistance felt lighter than the light resistance, and the extra heavy, which didn’t feel that way, also seemed mislabeled.

The Insonder Resistance Bands Set was one of the least expensive mini-band set we considered, and it showed. Several of the bands we received were visibly uneven where they had been cut. Nicks are known to compromise the integrity of resistance bands, so we chose not to test this set.

We tried a five-band set of Limm Resistance Loop Exercise Bands containing latex bands ranging in resistance from extra light to extra heavy. Their 12-inch length didn’t deliver quite the same level of tension during exercises as the Perform Better set we recommend, but if you’d prefer a few extra inches, they—like the Fit Simplify set we tested—will do fine (though we can’t vouch for their long-term durability).

Sklz Mini Bands (currently unavailable) are produced by a major brand and cost more than others, so we considered testing them to see whether they were worth it. However, after we saw the just-okay reviews on Amazon and middling reviews on the company’s own website, we decided not to bother.

The five latex Sports Research Sweet Sweat Mini Loop Resistance Bands are longer than our favorite mini bands by about 2 inches, though the measurements didn’t always add up: The extra heavy was a bit longer than the heavy but roughly the same thickness—and it didn’t feel much more difficult.

The Sportbit Exercise Resistance Bands come in a pack of five with three bands measuring 10 inches long and 2 inches wide and two bands measuring 12 inches long and 3 inches wide. The 12-inchers slipped down around our legs during standing lateral steps. All five are on the lighter side, which could serve those looking for gentler resistance.

The Fitness Solutions Pull Up Bands are significantly cheaper than many other superbands. Although the company claims these are made using the layering process, as opposed to being poured in a mold, we couldn’t find the telltale ridge or seam that sets overlayered bands apart. The bands also felt different—stiffer and slicker—than others we looked at that we knew were layered rather than molded.

The superbands from WODFitters Resistance Bands are a top pick at BestReviews , but we found more critical customer reviews than usual noting that these bands nicked, tore, or snapped within a year.

Fabric bands

The three-band set of DynaPro Fabric Mini Bands (currently unavailable) includes three bands of seemingly similar density with the length dictating the resistance: 15¼ inches (light), 12 inches (medium), and 10¼ inches (heavy). The light resistance was too long for lateral steps or bridges (we couldn’t get the right amount of tension) but was workable when we tried hip extensions on our hands and knees. The other two lengths were okay, but we thought they could be stronger.

The Shelter Fitness Fabric Glute Bands , which come in a set of three, are some of the longer bands we tried at 15 inches. We found them slightly too long to stay securely above our knees during lateral steps—it was hard to keep the appropriate tension throughout the exercise.

At 14¼ inches to 14½ inches long and 3 inches wide, the Walito Fabric Resistance Bands have a nice feel, with rubbery threads woven in at slightly different densities for each of the three bands’ resistances. There is a distinct difference among the trio, and despite being on the long side, they stay put. I didn’t struggle to keep them in place while doing standing exercises. At around $13, this trio was one of the cheaper fabric sets we tried; the medium resistance began to warp a bit after a few uses.

We found the set of six Wodskai Fabric Resistance Bands (currently unavailable) rough and stiff out of the package. Nearly all of the bands stretched at least a half inch after a few sets of light use (the lightest lengthened by a full inch). The heaviest of the bunch, X-heavy, didn’t stretch out but showed some warping.

travel and band

It's tough to maintain a fitness routine when you're on the go and don't have access to a gym. However, there's an easy solution: resistance bands. These portable workout centers, which easily fit into practically any suitcase, provide tons of exercise options. (Seriously, you'd be amazed how many different things you can do with a small band of rubber). The best resistance bands for travel typically combine the following features:

  • Durability : Your brand-new resistance bands shouldn't snap halfway through a leg lift. It's important to have durable, high-quality rubber that can hold up to tension. With my picks below, I read the reviews on Amazon to ensure they were made to last.
  • Lightweight : The whole idea is to bring the bands with you in your suitcase so you don't want a lot of extra weight or bulk. Make sure they're lightweight and not too bulky. (Bonus points if they come with a carrying case).
  • Versatile : Different exercises require different amounts of resistance so it helps to have a set of bands with varying strengths. If you can't find a full set, invest in a few separate pieces so you have a variety of options.

In addition to these essential qualities, it's also nice if your resistance bands are color-coded by weight or heaviness. This helps you to quickly identify which one is which. Also, folks with sensitive skin should opt for latex-free options, or bands with a low latex content.

Now that you have a better idea what you're looking for, check out the best resistance bands for travel below.

We only recommend products we love and that we think you will, too. We may receive a portion of sales from products purchased from this article, which was written by our Commerce team.

Fit Simplify Resistance Loop Exercise Bands (Set Of 5)

What's great about it : With a whopping 16,000-plus reviews, this exceptionally popular resistance band set has quite a cult following on Amazon. Reviewers noted that they love the set's versatility and how easy it is to travel with. It includes five latex-free bands of varying resistance (from "X-Light" to "X-Heavy"), plus a soft carrying case. All in all, it's a lightweight set that's incredibly easy to toss in your suitcase or backpack.

One reviewer wrote : "I am new to resistance band workouts but I am in love with these! They are affordable, easy to travel with, and perfect for use at home. There are thousands of free videos on YouTube featuring workouts that I can do with these, and they've added some much needed strength training to my running routine."

Black Mountain Products Single Resistance Band

What's great about it : If you prefer to have a little bit more grip, this is one of the best resistance bands with handles . The band is super durable and available in a huge range of resistance strengths (from 2-4 pounds to 70-75 pounds). The high-quality rubber is snap-resistant and 99% latex free. Best of all, it comes with a door anchor for even more versatility. The only drawback is that this option doesn't come as a set — you have to buy each band individually.

One reviewer wrote : "I love this for travel- I have it packed in my duffel for a weekend trip right now. It is super compact and easy to pack. The (actual) rubber part is good quality. I've [used] some of these from target and they seem like they will snap, but this is sturdy. As for the use... The handles have a really easy grip [...] I would 100% recommend this to anyone, especially if they are on the go or travel and need a little toning in between."

SPRI Braided Xertube Resistance Band Exercise Cords

What's great about it : This heavy resistance band ranks among the most durable on the market. Rather than a single-strand of material, it's designed with thick braids of heavy-duty rubber tubing. This provides exceptional strength (please read: no snapping), as well as top-notch flexibility and stretch. Although you sacrifice a bit of weight and bulk for the extra durability, it's nevertheless fairly lightweight and compact, making them great for travel. Like the previous pick, it doesn't come as a set, though you can choose from five different levels of resistance (or buy a few to make your own set).

One reviewer wrote : "I bought these to maintain fitness while traveling [...] These do a great job of stretching and pumping while on the road and are very light and compact to fit in luggage [...] These are now a fixture in my luggage for fitness maintenance when traveling, along with the perfect pushup device."

Letsfit Resistance Loop Band (Set Of 3)

What's great about it : These lightweight resistance bands for travel are budget-friendly yet still tough and durable, according to reviewers. They offer excellent pliability and resistance, and the slim, flexible design makes them super easy to carry on-the-go. The set comes with three latex bands of varying resistance levels and a convenient travel bag for convenience.

One reviewer wrote : "These work great. They feel sturdy....like I don't have to worry about them snapping and inflicting great pain on me [...] I bought these to use at my standing work desk....hoping I can get a little exercise in between tasks. And it works! Highly recommend these."

Music Travel love (MTL) is a Canadian brother duo comprised of Bob and Clint Moffatt. Professionally performing from the early age of 4 with over 5,000 live performances, Clint and Bob certainly fall within the category of seasoned entertainers.

Along with their brothers, Scott and Dave, then called The Moffatts were signed to Polydor Records in Nashville and became the youngest band to ever sign a major label record deal. Over the course of their career, they sold in excess of seven million records, (likely another seven million on the Asian black market) recorded seven albums, have Gold and Platinum records in 32 countries, performed at one of the first ever paid concerts in China, performed the first ever outdoor stadium concert in Vietnam and, to this day, hold album sales records for an international act in Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore!

In 2006, Clint and Bob moved back to Nashville where they re-established their careers as songwriters. They released 2 incredible EPs over this time frame. In 2015, they released an independent single Goodbye Baby on The Highway Sirius XM that charted in the top 20. In October of 2016, MTL released their single Amen for Women, which in a matter of weeks eclipsed well over 2 million views on YouTube. Their other EP, Happy ‘N High, was written, sung by, and produced by Bob and Clint in their own studio. In addition to writing for their own projects, they also write for other artists and projects. They have had three songs on Canadian artist Jimmy Rankin’s albums. Additionally, they’ve had four of their songs performed on the ABC prime time show, Nashville.

In 2018, MTL released a series of traveling studio videos which they titled Music Travel Love. Combining music, travel and their love for their families, Bob and Clint packed up their studio in a few small backpacks, headed across the world in search of the most beautiful destinations they could reach and filmed videos of both covers and their own originals. These videos are then shared across all of their rapidly growing social media platforms and YouTube – as well, every song is available on all streaming services.

To date - January 2021, their videos have grossed close to 900 million views on Facebook, Instagram, TIK TOK, and YouTube with over 7 million combined followers.

While Music Travel Love is a project they plan to grow throughout the years and continue to share with their fans all over the world, they are now expanding into new projects like: Music Travel Relax, Music Studio Love, and probably their personal favorites Music Travel Kids, and Music Java Love!

I have been using Music Travel Consultants since 2004 and have always been pleased with their organization, professionalism and their ‘can do’ attitude. In 2007 while at BOA Grand Nationals our charter jet broke down just before we were to load to fly home Saturday night.  MTC was able to get all 287 of us in a hotel within two hours and set up flights for us the next day. I can’t imagine another agency being able to do that so MTC will always take my group to Indiana!

Orlando 2018 was a wonderful experience for our students, ensembles, and adult travelers! The tour was designed to provide opportunities for each of the four facets of the music department, the group as a whole, and unique opportunities that would set this trip apart. Our Orlando trip, prepared and presented by Music Travel Consultants, was well organized, creative, and presented in person. MTC's online portal for registeration, payments, and organization. Working with the trip details of rooms, bus lists, payments, and trip documents was a tremendous organizational tool and time saver as a director. The team at Music Travel Consultants delivered an outstanding tour of Disney performances and clinic opportunities for our students. The students enjoyed fun at many of the Disney Parks, great accommodations at Flamingo Crossings, and special events including a final ride on Soarin' and the private party at Test Track. All were a hit and success with the students! Most importantly, the knowledge, expertise, and flexibility of the MTC staff in adjusting meal stops and schedules to accommodate the group made the trip. Thank you to our MTC Orlando Team and everyone at Music Travel Consultants!

Chris Forsythe and the MTC team were super in dealing with the postponement of the trip due to the pandemic. The staff's professionalism and accessibility was outstanding as they worked with the numerous questions, concerns, itinerary adjustments and personalities of adult travelers. Chris was always concerned with our safety, happiness in the experiences and comfort for both performances and sight-seeing adventures. Mirjam, our guide, was phenomenal in taking charge, accommodating requests and managing needy travelers, all while loving on us as individuals and as a group. She was funny, direct, strong, compassionate and her heart made us fall in love with her as a person. Tonya and the charter bus were great as well. She kept the coach clean, drove on tiny streets and was flexible with her schedule and time to help us as visitors to her country/city. The performance venues and contacts were unbelievable. Each were unique, friendly and acoustically and musically a blessing to perform in. The participation in the mass at the Basilica de Estrella was a special addition to the concert offerings. The large crowds were welcoming and seemed to love our repertoire. The overall tour way exceeded my expectations. The ENTIRE ensemble, guest travelers and staff were nothing but pleased by our trip and tour experience. - Thanks to all involved.

MTC was the first travel company I worked with to organize our trip to WGI championships and it will be the only one I will continue to use because of their professionalism and personable customer experience. The knowledgeable staff provided me with insights that helped our ensemble have many rewarding trips that left lasting impressions on all of our students. The attention to details, combined with the technology of cutting-edge travel tools, and topped off with their incredible and caring staff, has long made MTC one of the VERY BEST choices for student music travel in the country. They have always been a national “go to” with bands and orchestras, and for good reason. Now with the addition of Heart of America (HOA) and other upcoming choir events to their roster, MTC has positioned themselves not only as the best in the industry for instrumental ensembles, but for choral ensembles as well. As the creator and (former) owner of Heart of America, I was absolutely thrilled and knew immediately upon meeting Mark and Ryan that HOA would not only survive, but THRIVE with the leadership, vision, technology and staff that MTC brings to the table.

Taking the band to Atlanta for the Peach Bowl was a once in a lifetime experience and one that the students will remember for the rest of their lives. Performing our halftime show in Mercedes-Benz stadium for the Field Competition, as well as marching the parade and performing in the mass band for the bowl game, was incredibly exciting and something that I will never forget. Using Music Travel to put this trip together was the best decision that we could have made. For every major trip, from here on out, we will be in contact with Emily and Music Travel Consultants to make it happen.

The entire Music Travel Consultants Team is to be commended for an absolutely wonderful experience for my students. From our initial parent meeting to the last handshake after boarding the bus to go home, Music Travel Consultants worked hard to make our students’ experience the best it could be. MTC’s easy accessibility proved to be invaluable, and throughout the planning process MTC provided guidance, offered helpful suggestions, and made the daunting task of putting a trip like this together much less intimidating. We were so glad to use Music Travel for our first trip out of state to WGI in California. Our guide was so very helpful and took a ton of pressure off of me during the trip. Not having to deal with bus transportation, where to go for meals and checking in and out of hotels and airports was invaluable to me since I was already in charge of about 30 people. I wouldn't hesitate to use Music Travel again! Thank you for all the help, organization and attention to details!

MTC will be my only call when planning student travel in the future. Customer service is one of their greatest attributes. They have gotten our groups out of many travel jams. I don’t know how they do it but, holding a plane at the gate for an hour and a half for our students to make their connection on one trip, to rebooking with a new charter airline only days before takeoff are some amazing things this great group of professionals can do. Their tour directors become someone on our team who meet or exceed the standard of excellence I have within my own band program. I know I don’t need to worry about the details because MTC ensures everything is taken care of.

Music Travel Consultants friend David Lesser

It was easy to work with Emily to plan our trip. When she visited the school for parent meetings, she was well spoken and presented Music Travel and the trip well. The tour directors were great. Very helpful and professional. We enjoyed our trip and will use Music Travel again for future tours.

I can’t begin to explain how refreshing it is, as a band director who has to worry about every last detail, to not have to be concerned with these logistics. We appreciate your staff on every level: design, implementation, working with some of our parents, problem solving, etc. To top it off, you present yourselves to the band each and every day with such positivity and energy. • Budget-Friendly Accommodations : Opt for affordable accommodations that provide comfort without straining your budget.
  • Travel Grants : Research travel grants or sponsorships available for music education and performance travel to ease financial burdens.

Band Trip Logistics: Harmonizing the Journey

Band trip logistics encompass a wide range of considerations, from transportation and accommodations to instrument handling and meal arrangements. A comprehensive band trip logistics checklist can ensure a seamless journey for your musicians. Here are some key logistics to address:

  • Instrument Handling : Plan for the safe transportation of musical instruments, including securing instrument cases and considering instrument rental options at the destination.
  • Accommodations : Select accommodations that cater to the needs of your ensemble, such as secure storage for instruments and convenient rehearsal spaces.
  • Transportation : Arrange reliable transportation options, whether by bus, plane, or other means, that accommodate both your band members and their instruments.
  • Meals : Plan nutritious meals that fuel your musicians’ energy throughout the trip and accommodate dietary restrictions.

Band Trip Safety: Striking the Right Chord

Safety is paramount when planning a band trip. Implementing band trip safety tips for students ensures that your musicians have a secure and worry-free experience. Here are some safety considerations:

  • Emergency Contacts : Provide students with emergency contact information and establish communication protocols in case of unforeseen events.
  • Medical Preparedness : Carry necessary medical supplies and ensure that students have access to medical care if needed.
  • Travel Insurance : Consider travel insurance to cover unexpected situations such as trip cancellations, medical emergencies, or lost belongings.
  • Supervision : Maintain adequate adult supervision to oversee students’ well-being throughout the trip.

New American Legion Junior Band Exhibit Marches Through Time

B ELLEFONTE — The Centre County Library and Historical Museum unveiled its latest exhibit, focusing on the storied history of the American Legion Junior Band, with a grand opening at the Historical Museum in the Miles-Potter-Humes House on April 24.

The exhibit marks the Historical Museum’s first new showcase in nearly two decades. It showcases recent donations from community members, providing insight into the rich history and unique role of the American Legion Junior Band in Bellefonte.

The grand opening event was attended by museum staff, former band members, artifact donors and board members.

“All the regions around here had American Legion Junior Bands, but Bellefonte’s band was unique because the Bellefonte band worked together to produce 20 state championships and four national championships,” Judy Dombrowski of the Centre County Library and Historical Museum explained. “Their story hooked me and the more I saw, the more appreciative I was of how hard the band members and their director worked to make music, and they really made a musical legacy for Bellefonte.”

Dombrowski spearheaded the idea for the new exhibit, spending about a year working with donors, community members, the Historical Museum, volunteers and more to bring the history to life for current Centre County residents.

The exhibit, located upstairs in the Miles-Potter-Humes House, pieces together the narrative of Bellefonte’s American Legion Junior Band through artifacts, historical documents and photographs. The layout follows a chronological order, aiming to unravel not only the band’s beginnings but also its eventual conclusion.

Visitors can immerse themselves in the history through interactive displays. Additionally, the Bellefonte High School band, under the direction of Caleb Rebarchak, recorded an original composition of the American Legion Junior Band, offering museumgoers a nostalgic journey through time as they explore the exhibit.

Originating in the 1920s, the American Legion Band evolved into the American Legion Junior Band, which flourished from the late 1930s to the early 1960s, primarily comprising children ranging from elementary school to early college years.

“The American Legion donated a few photographs that explain how this band started. I did a little digging and putting things together and I figured out how it got in the hands of children because these people were from about age 8 through 21. That, I think, makes it so unique,” Dombrowski highlighted. “Little kids, teeny tiny kids were in training before they got to march by the director. It actually involves hundreds of kids, students, parents, community members — they all got together to do this.”

Dombrowski also noted how there’s still much to learn about the band and encouraged community members to help identify family, people they may know and maybe even themselves in the photographs that line the walls of the exhibit.

Located at 203 N. Allegheny St., Bellefonte, the Historical Museum is open from noon to 5 p.m. on weekdays, with the museum’s newest exhibit ready to be viewed by the public. In addition to the American Legion Junior Band exhibit, visitors can explore several other rooms housing artifacts and access virtual exhibits online. Tours are also available upon request.

The Miles-Potter-Humes House stands as a historical landmark for Centre County, with its Georgian-style architecture situated in downtown Bellefonte.

“This building is a very unique part of our organization because it not only has the resources of our genealogy collection, family history and local history, but we also have museum artifacts that are relevant to Centre County and also to Bellefonte,” Denise Sticha, the executive director of the Centre County Library and Historical Museum, noted.

The Historical Museum at the Miles-Potter-Humes House is just one facet of the Centre County Library and Historical Museum’s network. The house previously served as the library from 1939 until the Bellefonte location opened across the street. Over the decades, several more branches have opened, including in Philipsburg and Centre Hall. Additionally, the Centre County Library and Historical Museum’s bookmobile makes 19 stops across the county each week, extending library services to areas lacking public transportation.

From research and genealogy archives to public access to books and history, the Centre County Library and Historical Museum looks to be a free destination with information, technology resources and more for the community while continuing to preserve heritage in Centre County.

Tylenol Maker Kenvue to Cut 4% Jobs, Beats Quarterly Profit Estimates

Reuters

(Reuters) -Kenvue will cut 4% of its global workforce amid investments to grow its key brands, the Tylenol and Band-Aid maker said on Tuesday, as it topped beat Wall Street estimates for first-quarter profit.

Since its spinoff from Johnson & Johnson last year, Kenvue has focused on its 15 priority brands and in February announced it would increase its advertising spending this year.

The company said on Tuesday it targets pre-tax gross savings of about $350 million annually by 2026 through the cost-cutting program, but will incur $275 million each in restructuring expenses in 2024 and 2025.

The consumer health firm had 22,000 employees as of December end, according to its annual report.

Kenvue posted an adjusted profit of 28 cents per share for the first quarter, beating analysts' estimates of 26 cents.

"Given where investor expectations are for (Kenvue), we believe this was a solid overall print and its least noisy since becoming a public company," RBC Capital Markets analyst Nik Modi said in a note.

Kenvue's stock is down 11% so far this year, and 13% from its IPO price since listing in May last year. Shares were up 2.3% in premarket trading on Tuesday.

The self-care segment - which includes cough and cold medicine such as Tylenol and Benadryl - recorded $1.70 billion in net sales, up 3.5% year-on-year and above the average analyst estimate of $1.56 billion, according to LSEG data.

Kenvue's skin health and beauty segment, consisting of brands including Neutrogena and Clean & Clear, recorded a 5% drop in first-quarter net sales to $1.05 billion, but largely in line with estimates.

The company has pushed to improve the presence of its skin health products on store shelves in the U.S. as it looks to reverse sluggish sales over the last few quarters.

The New Jersey-based company posted first-quarter revenue of $3.89 billion, beating estimates of $3.79 billion.

Moscow concert attack: More than 60 reported dead; ISIS claims responsibility

This live blog has ended. For the most recent updates, please click here .

What we know about the Moscow concert attack

  • Men in camouflage broke into a Moscow concert hall and opened fire, shooting an unknown number of people, Russia’s prosecutor general said.
  • The terror group ISIS has claimed responsibility but did not provide proof of the claim, which was made on ISIS-affiliated news agency Amaq on Telegram.
  • Russia's Investigative Committee said that more than 60 people are dead after the attack at Crocus City Hall. Officials have said more than 100 others were injured.
  • A fire also started inside Crocus City Hall, a large concert venue northwest of central Moscow. Firefighters have evacuated about 100 people from the basement of the building and efforts are underway to rescue people from the roof, Russian emergency officials said.
  • Russia officials said they were investigating the attack as a terrorist act.
  • A popular rock band was scheduled to play what appeared to be a sold-out show at the venue, which has a maximum capacity of more than 9,000 people.

Three children were among the more than 60 people killed in yesterday's attack at Crocus City Hall, Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported, citing the Russian Ministry of Health.

Officials have warned that the death toll connected to the deadly incident may increase as the investigation continues.

Xi sends condolences to Putin

Chinese President Xi Jinping sent condolences to Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday after a deadly shooting at a concert hall near Moscow, saying China opposes all forms of terrorism and strongly condemns terrorist attacks.

China firmly supports the Russian government’s efforts to maintain national security and stability, Xi said, according to CCTV state television.

Moscow bloodshed comes two decades after some of worst attacks in Russia

The shooting attacks in Moscow are the latest in a series of deadly terror attacks in the country since the 2000s.

In 2004, militants from Chechnya and elsewhere took hostages at a school in Beslan in southern Russia.

The militants demanded a withdrawal from Chechnya. Hostages were kept in a gymnasium, and 334 died — half of them children — when gunfire and explosions erupted when it was stormed. Hostages’ families were critical of the rescue operation. Russian prosecutors later cleared authorities .

Two years prior, in 2002, Chechen separatists attacked the Dubrovka Theater in Moscow and took more than 700 people hostage. Russian forces used gas, and 129 hostages died. The attackers were killed.

More recently, in 2017 a suicide bomber from Kyrgyzstan killed 15 people as well as himself in an attack on a St. Petersburg subway. In 2013, two bombers killed a combined 34 people in attacks on a railway station and a trolleybus in Volgograd.

The group Islamic State, also known as ISIS, claimed responsibility for the attacks Friday at the Crocus City Hall venue.

Putin wishes victims well, deputy prime minister says

President Vladimir Putin is thinking of those injured in today’s attack and thanked doctors, a Russian government official said according to state media.

State media TASS reported that “Putin wished all those injured in the emergency at Crocus City Hall to recover and conveyed his gratitude to the doctors, Golikova said,” referring to Tatiana Golikova deputy prime minister for social policy, labor, health and pension provision.

More than 60 dead, and death toll could grow, Russian agency says

Russia’s Investigative Committee said Saturday that more than 60 people have died in the attack, and warned the number may increase.

smoke fire terror attack

“The bodies of the dead are being examined. It has been previously established that more than 60 people died as a result of the terrorist attack. Unfortunately, the number of victims may increase,” according to the Investigative Committee, which is a federal state agency.

Russia's Ministry of Internal Affairs and the security agency FSB are continuing to investigate, the committee said in a statement, and weapons and ammunition have been found.

U.S. warned Russia about planned terrorist attack in Moscow, NSC says

Monica Alba

The United States shared information about a potential terrorist attack in Moscow with Russia’s government earlier this month, a spokesperson for the National Security Council said.

The U.S. Embassy in Russia on March 7 warned U.S. citizens to avoid crowds and said it was monitoring reports that extremists might attack large gatherings in Moscow.

“Earlier this month, the U.S. Government had information about a planned terrorist attack in Moscow — potentially targeting large gatherings, to include concerts — which prompted the State Department to issue a public advisory to Americans in Russia,” NSC spokesperson Adrienne Watson said.

“The U.S. Government also shared this information with Russian authorities in accordance with its longstanding ‘duty to warn’ policy,” Watson said.

Putin recently dismissed ‘provocative’ warning about potential attacks

In remarks that aired three days ago, Russian President Vladimir Putin accused the West of “provocative statements” about potential terror attacks in Russia, and dismissed them.

Putin Russian Election Moscow

“I’ll remind you of recent, let’s say directly, provocative statements of certain official Western structures about potential terror attacks in Russia,” Putin said.

“All of this looks like obvious blackmail and an attempt to intimidate, destabilize our country,” he said before the state security agency FSB.

Putin in those remarks did not specify a country or warning. The U.S. embassy in Russia on March 7 warned U.S. citizens to avoid crowds .

“The Embassy is monitoring reports that extremists have imminent plans to target large gatherings in Moscow, to include concerts, and U.S. citizens should be advised to avoid large gatherings over the next 48 hours,” the U.S. embassy warned.

Guards at concert hall didn't have guns, state news says

The Associated Press

Guards at the concert hall didn’t have guns, and some could have been killed at the start of the attack, Russian media reported.

Some Russian news outlets suggested the assailants fled before special forces and riot police arrived.

Reports said police patrols were looking for several vehicles the attackers could have used to escape.

U.S. had been gathering intelligence that ISIS could attack Russia

travel and band

Ken Dilanian

The U.S. had been gathering intelligence for months that ISIS could mount a mass casualty attack in Russia, two U.S. officials confirmed to NBC News.

That information led to a March 7 warning issued by the U.S. embassy in Russia about possible extremist attacks, including at concerts, urging people to stay away from large gatherings, one of the officials said.

That official said the claim of responsibility today by ISIS appears to be genuine, though no final assessment had been made about who was responsible.

Some Moscow concertgoers filmed events as they unfolded Friday night, when gunmen opened fire inside a theater and people ran to take cover in fear for their lives.

Witness says gunfire was first thought to be construction noise

A witness to today’s armed attack on Moscow’s Crocus City Hall told a state news agency that they first mistook the gunfire for sounds of an installation being dismantled.

“First, we started hearing typical loud pops, but it was impossible to understand that they were gunshots. We thought that something was falling, as exhibitions were being dismantled at that moment, and someone seemed to be dropping something large,” Mikhail Semyonov told TASS .

“Then, the bangs were getting more and more frequent. Suddenly, there was a scream, and the bangs started to be heard as bursts. Then it became clear that it was shooting,” he said.

ISIS claims responsibility for attack but does not provide proof

The terror group Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attack in Moscow.

The group, also known as ISIS, did not provide any proof of its claim, which came from ISIS-affiliated news agency Amaq on Telegram.

The group’s members have carried out a number of terror attacks, including the 2015 attacks in Paris that killed 130 people.

Children among the victims, Russia's children commissioner says

Russia’s commissioner for children’s rights, Maria Lvova-Belova, said children were among the victims of tonight's attack.

"Information about their condition is regularly updated," Lvova-Belova said on Telegram. "Any additional assistance will be provided immediately."

She later told Russia 24 TV channel that at least two children had been injured, including one boy with a gunshot wound.

Earlier, Russian officials released a preliminary casualty toll of at least 40 people dead and more than 100 injured.

France, U.K., Germany condemn attack

Officials from France, the U.K. and Germany were among those who expressed their condolences to the victims of the attack at the Crocus concert hall.

"The images of the terrible attack on innocent people in Crocus City Hall near #Moscow are horrific," Germany's Foreign Office said on X . "The background must be investigated quickly. Our deepest condolences with the families of the victims."

"We condemn the terrorist attack in the Crocus City Hall near Moscow," the U.K.'s embassy in Russia said . "This is a terrible tragedy."

Meanwhile, France's foreign ministry called for "full light" to be shed on "these heinous acts."

Public events across Russia called off after attack

Several regional leaders across Russia, including in the annexed Kherson region of Ukraine, have canceled public events this weekend over security considerations after the deadly concert attack in Moscow.

Shortly after the attack, Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin canceled all sports, cultural and other public events in Moscow this weekend. State news agency TASS also quoted Russia's cultural ministry as saying that mass and entertainment events in federal cultural institutions have been canceled in the coming days.

Zelenskyy adviser speaks out about attack

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s adviser denied that Ukraine was involved in the deadly Crocus concert hall attack.

“Ukraine certainly has nothing to do with the shooting/explosions in the Crocus City Hall (Moscow Region, Russia),” Mykhailo Podolyak wrote on X. “It makes no sense whatsoever.”

No evidence has emerged to suggest Ukraine may have been involved, but Ukrainian officials may be trying to pre-empt accusations, as some Kremlin hawks have already started pointing at Kyiv.

Asked whether the shooting was at all tied to the war in Ukraine, U.S. National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby said: “There is no indication at this time that Ukraine, or Ukrainians, were involved in the shooting, but again, this just broke. We’re taking a look at it, but I would disabuse you at this early hour have any connection to Ukraine.”

Videos posted to social media appear to show chaos inside Moscow's Crocus City Hall during and after a terrorist attack.

Some videos include what sound like gunshots and show men with rifles, as concertgoers frantically try to exit the venue.

Jason Abbruzzese

The State Department said that the U.S. Embassy in Moscow is aware of the terrorist attack on Crocus City Hall and that U.S. citizens should avoid the area and follow the instructions of local authorities.

"The U.S. government’s ability to provide routine or emergency services to U.S. citizens in Russia is severely limited, particularly in areas far from the U.S. embassy in Moscow, due to Russian government limitations on travel for U.S. embassy personnel and staffing, and the ongoing suspension of operations, including consular services, at U.S. consulates in Russia," the State Department said in a message posted to its website .

US warned Russia after steady stream of intelligence that ISIS-K was determined to attack, source says

From CNN’s Alex Marquardt, Natasha Bertrand and Jennifer Hansler

Ambulances and vehicles of Russian emergency services are seen parked outside the burning Crocus City Hall concert venue outside Moscow on Friday.

Starting in November, there has been a steady stream of intelligence that ISIS-K was determined to attack in Russia, according to two sources familiar with the intelligence.

It was “fairly specific” intelligence, rising to the level of a duty to warn and the US intelligence community did indeed warn Russia, one of the sources said. But it’s not clear if this is directly tied to the March 7 warning by the US embassy in Moscow.

Russian state media  reported  on March 7 that the FSB prevented an ISIS attack on a synagogue in Moscow, according to Reuters. The ISIS attackers were killed in a gunfight, the reports said.

A US official told CNN that the US is working to determine who is culpable for the attack at a Moscow concert venue.

Adrienne Watson, National Security Council spokesperson, issued a statement Friday on the US warning Russia about an attack.

"Earlier this month, the US government had information about a planned terrorist attack in Moscow – potentially targeting large gatherings, to include concerts – which prompted the State Department to issue a public advisory to Americans in Russia. The US Government also shared this information with Russian authorities in accordance with its longstanding ‘duty to warn’ policy."

From CNN's Richard Roth and Mia Alberti

The United Nations Security Council condemned the "heinous and cowardly" attack at the Crocus concert hall in Krasnogorsk, in Moscow, on Friday, which left 40 dead and more than 140 people injured.

"The members of the Security Council expressed their deepest sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims and to the Russian people, and they wished a speedy and full recovery to those who were injured," the UNSC said in a statement.

The members of the UNSC urged all States to cooperate with the Russian government to "hold perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors of these reprehensible acts of terrorism accountable and bring them to justice."

"The members of the Security Council reiterated that any acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation, wherever, whenever and by whomsoever committed," it said.

Moscow terror attack leaves 115 people hospitalized, 60 in "serious condition," Russian health minister says

From CNN's Darya Tarasova

Emergency services personnel and servicemen are seen outside the Crocus City Hall concert hall in Krasnogorsk, outside Moscow, on Friday.

Following the deadliest terror attack on Moscow in decades, 115 people have been hospitalized of which 60 are in a "serious condition," according to Russian Health Minister Mikhail Murashko.

“We hospitalized 115 people, five of them are children. One child is in serious condition,” Murashko said in an early morning statment on Saturday according to Russian state media TASS.

UN chief strongly condemns "terrorist attack" in Russia

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has condemned "in the strongest possible terms today's terrorist attack at a concert hall outside Moscow," according to a statement released by deputy spokesperson for the Secretary-General, Farhan Haq.

"The Secretary-General conveys his deep condolences to the bereaved families and the people and the Government of the Russian Federation. He wishes those injured a speedy recovery," the statement said.

Moscow urgently calls for blood donors to help treat dozens of wounded

Moscow City Duma Chairman Alexey Shaposhnikov late Friday called on Muscovites to come forward and give blood to help treat the dozens of wounded following Russia's deadliest terror attack in decades.

“After today’s tragedy in Crocus, many victims need donor blood. I ask you to donate blood for the wounded! Now this is very important, this is a matter of life and death for dozens of people,” Shaposhnikov said on Telegram

Shaposhnikov listed several blood center facilities in the Moscow area that will accept donors throughout the weekend.

Bandon Dunes at 25: The groundbreaking Oregon resort keeps getting bigger (and better)

Bandon Dunes, the original course at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort, opened 25 years ago this month.

Evan Schiller

Let’s take a trip in the wayback machine to a long ago gray morning on the Oregon coast: May 2, 1999. A light rain is falling. A brisk breeze is blowing off the water. And a 2-iron of a man named Mike Keiser is greeting golfers on the first tee of a rugged-looking layout, gifting everyone he meets with a commemorative coin. Each marker bears the image of a tufted puffin, a logo that will grow into an icon.

It’s opening day at Bandon Dunes.

Given the way things are in recreational golf today, it’s easy to forget how different things were then, and how sharply Bandon broke from what had come before it.

For decades, public access courses in this country had largely been developed as real estate plays or lush amenities to frill-filled resorts close to major population centers. Golfers buzzed around in carts and lost balls by the box load. Errant shots that didn’t land in artificial lakes risked smashing the windows of neighboring homes.

Pacific Dunes at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort.

In Keiser’s eyes, this was not golf as it was meant to be or anything like what he aimed to create. With a fortune earned in recycled greeting cards and a vision shaped by golf trips to Ireland and Scotland, he’d set out to revive the game’s rustic, windswept spirit in a market that had stifled it with waterfalls and buggies. To realize his dream, he’d further shirked convention by acquiring seaside land in an outlier location, a few miles north of the sleepy town of Bandon, Ore., and hiring as his designer a young, untested Scotsman named David McLay Kidd.

“I was full of piss and vinegar at the time,” McLay Kidd says. “But aside from confidence, I didn’t have a lot to show for myself.”

Keiser wasn’t shy on self belief, either. But in quieter moments, he couldn’t help but wonder if the skeptics — and there were many — might be right about walking-only golf exposed to coastal elements on a course situated at the edge of nowhere. He was going to build it, but would anybody come?

The answer arrived sooner than expected. Of the 144 golfers invited to the ribbon cutting, 25 years ago this month, there was only one no-show in the dreary weather. The reviews were glowing, in person and in print. Afforded a sneak peek, GOLF magazine described the land as “the finest made available for a golf course in America since Alister MacKenzie was shown the site for the Cypress Point.” In another publication, a giddy scribe confessed that the course gave him the urge to sprint down the fairways naked. He meant that in a good way.

Old Macdonald at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort.

The point was that Bandon had awakened something primal. It had taken the old and made it new again, meeting a demand for a throwback form of golf that had been ignored for so long that people had forgotten it even existed.

the par-3 17th hole at bandon trails

All the courses at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort, explained

In that first year, Keiser hoped the course would draw 10,000 rounds, a number he figured he needed to break even; it wound up registering 25,000.

“After that full tee sheet on opening day, I was optimistic,” Keiser says now. “But after that first year, I was absolutely astonished.”

And clear in his conviction that a single course was not enough. “One plus one equals three” was Keiser’s formulation (even his approach to simple math was different), the idea being that a second layout would bring exponential benefits to the resort. As most avid golfers know, Bandon today is home not to two but five 18-hole courses ( Bandon Dunes , Pacific Dunes , Bandon Trails , Old Macdonald and Sheep Ranch ) and a par-3 course (Bandon Preserve) with another short course (Shorty’s) set to open this month. Among the striking features of that growth is how faithful the resort has stayed to its founding ethos: that great golf doesn’t require fancy extras. Even if wagyu beef has joined “Grandma’s meat loaf” among the menu items, everything at Bandon revolves around the game and the fellowship, fresh air and challenge that come with it. You can book a massage, but you can’t hit the spa because there isn’t one. Most guests rise at daybreak, play until exhaustion, then get up the next morning and do it again.

Meanwhile, beyond its property lines, Bandon has inspired profound change. In a once-flagging region whose two main industries — fishing and logging — had sputtered, the resort has become a vital economic engine, the second-largest employer in the county, after the hospital system. And then there is its impact on the game itself.

Sheep Ranch at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort.

Even as it broke a mold, Bandon offered a fresh template for “destination” golf. That world-class courses now extend from the sand barrens of Wisconsin and the shores of Nova Scotia to Saint Lucia, Tasmania, Norway and beyond owes largely to a pioneering project on the Oregon coast.

“It flipped everything,” says the architect Bill Coore, who, with his design partner, Ben Crenshaw, had a hand in many of those courses, including three at Bandon. “We take it for granted these days that if you find a great site and build great golf on it, golfers will come see it, no matter how far they have to go. But if you said that before Bandon, a lot of people would have said you’d lost your mind.”

As Bandon now prepares to mark a major anniversary, it is also getting ready for another ribbon cutting at its new 19-hole par-3 course Shorty’s. What the weather has in store is anyone’s guess. But this much is certain: A large crowd of Bandon loyalists will be on hand. So will Mike Keiser, greeting guests and handing out commemorative coins.

“Has it really been 25 years?” Keiser says. “To me, it actually feels like we’ve been around much longer.”

No wonder, really. Bandon fits so naturally into the landscape, it almost seems to have been there from the start.
