Did anyone else get a mailer that gives you complimentary cruise and airfare if you attend this event?

It sounds like a scam but wanted to get others thoughts or experiences

It's a website. Type scam pulse into Google and it comes right up.

Actually I’d rather hear from Cruise Critic people.  I’m sure there are many things on cruise critic that can be found on other sites.

I googled scam pulse and read their reviews on trustpilot (which I have used before).  Personally, I think I'd take whet I read on scampulse with a grain of salt

Absolutely no need to google or look at any other sites, as that age old saying springs to mind.

IF IT SOUNDS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE IT USUALLY IS.

I would also be skeptical (and was hoping you would get a response).  What was the event they wanted you to attend?  Are they still doing the time share stuff I wonder?

I'll help you out.  IT'S A SCAM!  I refer you to the top Google search from Talk of the Villages January 2023 ( retirement residences in Florida) where the exact same question was posted (was that you as well?) and responses were provided from people who had called the number, friends of theirs who had called/gone to the event etc.  It is a travel club and/or timeshare.  You will get no bargains out of it.  The 'free' tickets come with many many conditions including extra fees.  I would also suggest you go to Elliott.org or Christopher Elliott's social media pages where he has many articles on travel scams and timeshare scams.

If you're still thinking about this then the adage 'a fool and his money are soon parted' comes to mind.

Throw this flyer in the trash...do not pass go, do not collect anything....

You're welcome.

Thanks

The details of the event were vague.  It indicated a local Marriott that would be hosting the event and a number to call for the event details all masked as Travel and Cruise Showcase 2023

Holiday Sharing

Sounds fishy at best.

Here is it again in 2023. Does anyone have any new information about this Travel and Cruise offer yet?

If something sounds too good to be true, it is.

I got the postcard in the mail today!  I'm considering going to the show to see what is offered just out of curiosity.  Original poster:  did you go to the show?

I did not as I’ve made it my life’s work to avoid these types of scams.  Please report back after you go to the show and tell us about it

Well, we decided to attend the Next Travel Destination show.  It was held in the Sheraton Four Points Hotel in Punta Gorda, Florida.  16 of us were in attendance.  The Vice President of Marketing did the presentation.  It's a members only travel agency.  He claims that there are 3 million members.  The presentation lasted about an hour and then a salesperson came to each couple's table.  The cost of the Platinum Lifetime Membership started at $9,995 with annual dues of $199.  Our salesman, offered us multiple discounts with the final price being $3,500.  We didn't accept the offer, but at least two other couples did sign up.  This was truly a "no pressure to sign up" presentation.  We were in and out in less than 90 minutes with a handshake from the salesperson.

We were given a certificate for a 5 day Carnival cruise, or options for other vacation offers.

This needs to be filled out and sent to Customer Choice Rewards, in Tarpon Springs, FL, along with a self addressed stamped envelope.

I'll keep you posted with the outcome!  I don't have high expectations for this working out, but I felt like it would be a good experiment.  Being retired, we have the time and we found out where the free bicycle rental place is in Punta Gorda!  This was a nice diversion from dealing with Hurricane Ian repairs at our home.

Glad to hear it was no pressure and your invested time was minimal.  Not what I expected to hear.  Thanks for reporting back

I received this invite in today's mail. My initial thought was that they got my name from some cruise data base, if such a data base even exists. The clincher for me was that both my last and first name were spelled incorrectly (in addition to my name or "current resident" invited)  so I know they didn't get it from some legit information that the cruise lines might sell.  Oh well, I was excited for at least a moment!

Reply to "The Nurse". We also attended a "presentation" and decided (barely) to pass. We were told our vouchers would come by email ("as it is not safe for us to carry them anymore"). Have yet to see anything. Did you get your vouchers at the presentation? Have you had a response yet?

Many years ago I did something similar and after paying a fee of @ $400 I did get a vacation as advertised and even got my money refundad after completing the trip!

When I read "....you will receive (2) two complimentary round trip airline vouchers" (Yea on what airline? AND "....valid for travel from most major international airports" Yea what airports? AND (In addition you will receive (2) two nights at one of over 1,000 Marriott, Hilton, or Hyatt Hotels)......I said NO! We don't need to dilly dally on the phone with with these "MORONS" we have better things to do.

Has anyone participated is this? I received a letter offering 2 roundtrip air tickets (American, delta, united are listed) and 2 free nights in a Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt property.

It sounds like a scam or time share presentation but for free tickets and hotel I might be interested in sitting through the presentation.

I had one star expectations for this event and it delivered. This is mostly an event for people to sell you things. You are the product. Yeah, maybe you can get a discount or find out about a new place (I learned that Orange County, NY exists!) but you can do the same online. Tickets sell for $20 but you can probably get them free or discounted online. I got mine for free from an Instagram ad by a travel company, in exchange for giving them my contact info. I certainly would not pay $20 to attend and talk to salespeople. I would give this event 2 stars if it was free. The event took place in Hall C of the convention center, which is about 1/3 of the large basement space, way at the back. It was not a very large event. There were about 3 stages and maybe 40 vendors from different US states, countries, and travel providers like cruises, safaris, or general travel agents. A handful of booths had some swag, samples, or contest entries in exchange for your contact info so they can spam you later. We didn't bother with most of them. Louisville, Kentucky had cocktail samples (Old Fashioned) which were actually good. A few had candy we ignored. Two Caribbean spots had rum samples. The main activity is pick up brochures or book trips with people. We spent about an hour there, ignored most of the booths because we didn't want to get stuck in uncomfortable sales conversations, and then left.

Had fun attending since I am a travel agent. I got to learn a lot about the cruising industry which is helpful since I am planning a cruise trip for a friend currently. I got to also meet people from a baseball stadium tour company that was right up my alley! I got a lot of valuable information surprisingly and will definitely attend in the future. Tip for my fellow travel agents: Make sure to book on the travel agent link to attend for free. You get a badge to wear, get access to the event an hour earlier than everyone else on day 1. You also get to hear some amazing panels geared towards us.

Asked to remove my dead Grandfather of 6+ years from their mailing list. Was told to go remove him on another website. "That we don't do that here." If a company doesn't have the common decency to remove someone from their mailing list. When you call and ask. What's the point of having a call number? As a worker for that company. You cannot perform an action based on solicitation mail which is the only reason you received a phone call in the first place. He is already on the "do not mail list", so I cannot go elsewhere and remove him. Just laughable

First time attending this event! I won some passes through Yelp DC. I stopped by for about an hour on Sunday. I took metro since I figured parking would be horrendous and it was St. Patty's Day! Checking in was very easy and I received a wristband and a booklet with the layout. I walked around to most of the vendors/travel agencies. I just felt overwhelmed and that so many of them were all trying to sell vacation packages on the spot. I didn't care be hassled into buying a trip without having talked to family members or friends (people I would be traveling with. I'm not ready to take solo vacations). I just thought it would have been more "exciting." I don't think I would attend this event again...

This is a complete scam. I received a letter indicating that I would receive several things but I'll just just mention one. The offer was for "two nights at one of over 1000 Marriott's, Hiltons, or Hyatt's " So, I said just for that alone I'll accept and I then I said that I would be using those two nights at a local NYC area hotel. Immediately I was told that I had to fly in order to get the hotel. I said I'm not flying within 20 miles and there are a lot of those hotels mentioned within these 20 miles. Immediately the lady started to try to get me to attend a meeting to which I replied that if I cant use a hotel as stated earlier I would not fall for this scam!

The booths are staffed with knowledgable folks who are easy-going. Smart venue for this event. The Washington, DC Convention Center can handle the needs of both the crowd and the exhibitors quite well. Good feeling in the air. Saw Samatha Brown, formerly of the Travel Channel and now with PBS, speak about her travel career. She's the real deal and was exciting to see in person. Nice selection of performing arts from all over. For example, there was a Thai dance troupe that performed who were graceful, fun to watch. If you are serious about travel and adventure, this is a must-do. Got helpful tips on travel to some spots that I've been dreaming of visiting. Thanks to Sabine at the Florida Keys & Key West table; a longtime resident there, she was a font of information and gave me all sorts of fab maps and coupons. Also grateful to Mike at the Pocono Mountains' Visitors Bureau; he let me know how vast the Poconos are, and what some of my options could be.

travel and adventure show 2022 letter legit

This is one of my favorite events in DC. I have only attended the show at the convention center. Tickets are inexpensive and frequently free. If you follow the show on Facebook or twitter, you can find out useful details about the show before it takes place. This year #PassportProject (Hilton Hotels) handed out free tickets to anyone that wanted to renew or apply for a passport. I got free passport photos and a nice passport cover. The event is "one stop shopping" for travel information, fun swag & discounted trips. We enjoyed several cooking demonstrations from local restaurants. There were informative lectures on photography, how to spend & accrue miles and cultural dances on stage. There are always unique activities at this show. In previous years, I rode a camel, took underwater pictures in full snorkeling gear and posed in costume with a backdrop from another country. This year there was a motion thrill ride with virtual reality goggles. Tips for attending the expo: *The most important tip: Open a Gmail account. You get a "phone number" that will only ring to a phone if you forward it. Otherwise all your "calls" are sent to your email. You can play the messages by clicking on your email and see when someone has tried to contact you. Use the google number for any contest entry or survey. That way you won't get called fourteen times if an eager vendor wants to sell you something. Research the speakers & events ahead of time. There are meet and greets and awesome programs. It helps to have a plan. Wear comfortable shoes. You'll walk more than you realize. Be comfortable. The food selections are limited. There were three vendors at the expo and a coffee shop by the entrance. You can taste items at a cooking demo but that won't be enough. Bring a snack and a bottle of water. You can always eat nearby and come back if you are still wearing your wristband. Do your research on any travel company, especially the time shares and "vacation packages." You can always google the vendor while standing in front of the booth. If you find bad reviews or complaints from the BBB, be cautious. If a vendor promises a ticket or gift with purchase, get it in writing. Ask what the return policy is on merchandise. Many of the vendors can swipe your credit card on a phone and email the receipt. If you aren't holding a receipt, you can't read the return policy. Ask for a business card. If you don't see a company address or website, be careful. Take pictures! There are always fun backdrops for pictures. I look for the photo booth as soon as I enter the expo. Look for swag. You won't need pens or shopping bags for a while after this event. My tiara was the best swag from the weekend. The passport pictures were the most practical.

I love the DC Travel Show. This is my 4th year attending. Many vendors, domestic and international. My favs were: Guatemala, Antartica, Indonesia, India, and Gate 1 Travel. At the Key West table, the older gent treated me as if I had not traveled further than my street. That's always frustrating. Also, his ignorance, not mine. Peter Greenberg and Kellee Edwards, two travel journalists that were a delight to hear speak. Quite knowledgeable in their field and a great sense of humor. I'll continue to support and watch them on the Travel Channel. Not all who wander are lost. Until next year, DC Travel & Adventure Show.

More crowded than I thought. Lots of travel info and fun activities like rock climbing, a camel ride, Segway, etc... and cooking shows. The talk by the Booz traveler will start soon. Ticket: Around $8-15. Groupon or something is selling better deal ticked. Free for military. Parking: Street or garage.

I love traveling and adventure so it was a total no brainer that I would be visting this showcase! Parking around this area on a weekend is horrendous but metro wasn't an option for us. Eventually we parked and found our way to the actual convention with easy. We bought our tickets on Groupon for less than $12 for two tickets. I'm so glad I didn't pay full price for this convention. When we arrived I noticed an insane amount of people on the floor. It was extremely hard to move from booth to booth with the amount of people. I realized the lack of security as well as no one checking wristbands or the amount of people allowed in at once. The other issue was this convention was mostly papers and pamphlets. I was honestly surprised that there weren't more freebies or samples. One booth had a sample but it was only for the people who were having long conversations. We kind of walked down every isle passing booths because nothing was exciting. I don't think I would come to this convention again. The lack of simulation was a real damper and didn't make me want to stay. Most of the convention was east coast and it wasn't at all what I thought it would be. It's unfortunate because it could've been a lot better.

Speakers at the Travel & Adventure Show

One of my favorite parts of the show was attending the inspirational travel seminars. For my 2022 visit, there were over thirty of them on three stages, so be sure to plan out which ones you want to see! And yes, all the seminars are included in the price of your ticket.

My last Boston show had several featured speakers, including Andrew McCarthy (yes, the Pretty in Pink and St. Elmo’s Fire actor!), beloved travel show host Samantha Brown , and Pauline Frommer —the author, TV host, and Editorial Director of Frommer’s Guidebooks.

travel and adventure show 2022 letter legit

On the main stage, known as the Travel Theater, the featured speakers entertained and inspired us with stories of their travels throughout the world.

At the end of each seminar there’s a brief Q&A session, followed by a meet and greet so you can interact (and maybe snap a photo) with the speakers.

Pro tip: If you want to meet one of your fave speakers without standing in a long line, get up during the Q&A session at the very end of the seminar and head over to the Meet & Greet stand. You’ll still be able to hear the end of the session, but you’ll be at the front of the line!

Featured speakers vary by city, and (of course) the list of speakers is subject to change. Check out my chart below with all of last year’s featured speakers for each city.

When the 2023 Travel & Adventure Show speakers are finalized, I’ll update this post. So bookmark it if you’re thinking about attending!

In addition to the Travel Theater , the exhibition also features two other stages hosting interesting travel talks on various topics:

Destination Theater:  A variety of destination experts will inspire you to travel, sharing in-depth information about how to experience their favorite places like a local.

Savvy Traveler Theater:  Here you’ll find travel pros sharing their best travel tips—like how to pack for your vacation, budget travel hacks, and how to stay safe when you travel.

Also the first 50 attendees would receive a $100 dinner voucher. We responded to the mail immediately upon receiving it, we went to the presentation, and received nothing so far. This is smelling like a scam.

No, you probably didn't win a free vacation. Don't let these scams ruin your summer fun

travel and adventure show 2022 letter legit

Summer months mean vacations, outdoor concerts – and unfortunately, scams.

While scams happen year-round, during the summer there's an uptick in fraud around popular summer activities, Dan Cusick, a fraud and claim executive at Wells Fargo, told USA TODAY.

"Scammers and or bad actors as we often refer to them, really just look to exploit events. So whether it's the holiday season, whether it's summertime and concerts ... their whole MO isn't so much to get to that one person," explained Cusick. "It's to exploit an event and then those people come to that event and the scam is on."

Young adults may be the most vulnerable to summer scams

"Fraud and scams are an equal opportunity sport" that will exploit anybody, said Cusick, but young adults aged 18 to 24 are more likely to become victims of summer frauds, particularly fake concert tickets.

In an October 2023 study, the BBB found that young consumers aged 18 to 24 reported a higher median loss in scams than other age groups for the first time in 2022.

Still, scams happen to any age group, he said. The FTC in February said consumers reported losing more than $10 billion to fraud in 2023, marking the first time that fraud losses have reached that benchmark. It was also a 14% increase over losses reported in 2022.

Fake vacation rentals, concert tickets are common scams

Here are some common summer scams, according to Cusick:

  • Summer concert and event scams: Fraudsters will target and exploit popular summer concerts, trying to lure victims through fake websites, social media posts or emails offering tickets at discounted prices. Victims are asked to pay upfront for the tickets, often via a peer-to-peer payment app, which may not have as many protections against fraud.
  • Fake travel websites: Be on the lookout for spoofed or fake travel websites, which can be disguised as legitimate sources. These sites might look real, offer attractive deals on flights, hotels and vacation packages, but there is no vacation. If a website asks for payment in the form of a gift card or a wire transfer, that's a red flag. Another red flag: if the site asks you to book immediately.
  • The disappearing vacation rental: Scammers are trying to take advantage of popular sites like AirBnB and VRBO by offering properties that don't exist or don't belong to them. If the site asks you to go to another site to make your payment, or if that payment is required via an unusual payment method, that's a red flag. Research the rental property by doing an online search for the owner's name or property address.
  • You've won a free vacation: Some scammers will try to trick consumers into believing they've won a "free" vacation, but they need to pay a fee to receive the prize or pay for taxes.

Beware of scams targeting senior citizen Here's tips to protect yourself or a loved one

Tips to protect yourself from scams

Here are Cusick's tips to protect yourself from scams:

  • Verify websites: Make sure the URL is an authentic website of a known company. Look for the padlock icon, which indicates it's a secure site.
  • Book direct: When possible, book directly from an official travel provider.
  • Use a credit card, when you can: Credit card purchases provide certain protections for consumers while peer-to-peer payment apps may not.
  • Use caution with QR codes: While QR codes can be convenient, be aware that scammers can use QR codes to send you to a malicious site. Verify the site is legitimate.

Column: Ted Cruz and Katie Britt claim to be protecting IVF with a new bill. Don’t believe them

 Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas

Ever since the Supreme Court upended reproductive health rights in its 2022 Dobbs decision, antiabortion activists have been trying to make the case that the decision won’t have the dire effect on women and their families that its critics foresaw.

They’ve been wrong, as has been demonstrated by the rising tide of incidents in which pregnant women have been exposed to severe injury or near-death experiences for want of a therapeutic abortion.

But the case also opened the door to legal predicaments throughout the healthcare universe — most recently via a ruling in February by the Alabama Supreme Court, effectively outlawing in-vitro fertilization in that state .

Opinion polls show that giving people a route to parenthood via IVF is immensely popular, so even conservative lawmakers have scurried to enact laws to protect the method.

Human life cannot be wrongfully destroyed without incurring the wrath of a holy God.

— Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Tom Parker, concurring in an anti-IVF decision

The most recent initiative comes from Republican Sens. Ted Cruz of Texas and Katie Britt of Alabama, who introduced their “IVF Protection Act” on May 20 and have been touting it in the Wall Street Journal , Bloomberg and elsewhere as a measure that “protects both life and IVF.”

Their bill does nothing of the kind. It’s a scam. More on that in a moment.

First, a brief primer on the IVF method. IVF isn’t abortion. Quite the contrary, it’s a means of creating, not terminating, a pregnancy.

But with the Supreme Court signaling via Dobbs and other recent rulings that it won’t interfere with state-level restrictions on reproductive healthcare, legislatures and courts in red states have turned their gunsights on healthcare rights of all varieties. The Alabama Supreme Court reached all the way back to an 1872 law to drive IVF out of the state.

IVF aims to help couples achieve pregnancy when medical issues or concerns about heritable genetic mutations raise concerns about the health of their prospective offspring. Millions of Americans have employed IVF or know couples who have done so. There’s no question about its safety or its efficacy. Celebrities including the Obamas , Paris Hilton, Brooke Shields, and Republican politicians such as Michelle Steel (R-Seal Beach) have used IVF to conceive.

The procedure begins with the harvesting of unfertilized eggs from a woman’s ovaries. Subsequently, they’re fertilized by sperm from the woman’s partner. A few days later, an embryo — in some cases more than one — is placed in the woman’s uterus. Within another day or two the embryo implants itself in the uterine lining and is left to continue gestation normally.

Column: Antiabortion agitators are trying to cripple a lifesaving federal healthcare law

Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act mandates that emergency rooms treat all arriving patients. The antiabortion crowd wants to exempt emergency abortions. The Supreme Court is giving them a hearing

April 5, 2024

To understand the act of misdirection that Cruz and Britt are pulling off, let’s examine that Alabama Supreme Court decision. The decision says almost nothing about the procedure that most laypersons think is the alpha and omega of IVF — the implantation of manually fertilized embryos into the uterus. To the extent that this process needs regulation, the justices held, that should be left up to the legislature.

But of course there’s more to IVF than that. Standard procedure in IVF clinics is to produce multiple embryos, but only to implant one at a time. The idea is to give the parents further opportunities in case an implantation fails. In roughly half of all cases, the embryos are subjected to pre-implantation genetic testing.

Many couples choose IVF because they’re concerned that one or both prospective parents may be carriers of a genetic mutation that could cause a serious medical condition, and they want to know ahead of time.

“If this genetic mutation is discovered in an embryo, the embryo is usually discarded,” according to Joanne Rosen, an expert in public health at Johns Hopkins. She asks whether the Alabama ruling means that “pre-implantation genetic testing should no longer take place because you can’t discard the embryos?”

Also, the thawing and implanting of embryos itself may damage or destroy an embryo. Typically, those embryos are discarded.

The Alabama decision was concerned almost entirely with that stage of the process — specifically with the legal status of the unused embryos or discarded embryos. The court found that they fell within the protection of the state’s 1872 Wrongful Death of a Minor Act — largely because the law didn’t explicitly provide “an exception ... for extrauterine children,” as Justice Jay Mitchell wrote for the court majority.

Indeed, the legal quandary that prompted Alabama’s IVF clinics to shut down after the ruling wasn’t that their right to implant embryos was now in question — it was their potential liability for the treatment of the unused embryos.

This isn’t a trivial issue. By some estimates, more than 1 million embryos are currently in cryogenic storage across the U.S. The Alabama ruling, if it percolates nationwide, “raises a huge question about what the obligations are for these frozen embryos,” Rosen said on the Johns Hopkins website. “Does this mean that they cannot be destroyed and have to be preserved into perpetuity?”

Column: Red states are threatening to criminalize out-of-state abortions. These blue states are fighting back

Idaho has made it a crime to transport a minor up to the state line for an out-of-state abortion. Out-of-state providers are right to fear prosecution.

Aug. 9, 2023

That’s what makes the Cruz/Britt measure so slippery. It purports to guarantee Americans access to in vitro fertilization, by forbidding states to outlaw it, but defines IVF simply as “the practice whereby eggs are collected from ovaries and manually fertilized by sperm, for later placement inside of a uterus.”

Nothing there about how to treat the stored embryos or the legal consequences if any are injured in the process of fertilization or placement. Their proposal, moreover, says that nothing can block states from “implementing health and safety standards regarding the practice of in vitro fertilization.”

Abortion rights advocates will recognize that provision as a poisoned chalice, because even before the Supreme Court overturned Roe vs. Wade with its Dobbs ruling, numerous antiabortion states were imposing onerous regulations on abortion clinics in the name of “health and safety” — everything from dictating corridor widths to requiring that providers have admitting privileges at local hospitals.

These pernicious regulations are known as “TRAP laws,” for “targeted restrictions on abortion providers.” Although they’re “often pushed by anti-abortion politicians under the guise of ‘women’s health,’” in the words of Planned Parenthood , their real purpose “is to shut down abortion providers and make it more difficult for people to access abortion.” In their bill, Cruz and Britt explicitly encourage more of this in relation to IVF.

One more point: The bill’s guarantee of rights even to its narrowly defined IVF is nothing like absolute. It’s tied to a state’s participation in Medicaid — states would be required to keep IVF legal as a condition of their receiving Medicaid payments.

How big a cudgel is this? In some states, almost none at all. We know this because 10 GOP-led states, mostly in the deep South, still have not expanded Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act, even though the federal government pays 90% of the cost of covering the eligible residents.

In those states, an estimated 1.5 million residents fall into the “coverage gap” — their incomes are too low to be eligible for ACA subsidies, but even though they live below the federal poverty line, their incomes are too high to be eligible for Medicaid in their states.

Column: A spineless Walgreens bows down to antiabortion crusaders

By capitulating to antiabortion forces and showing its cowardice, Walgreens abandons its own customers and its corporate principles.

March 6, 2023

Those states include the home states of Britt and Cruz: Alabama (174,000 in the coverage gap) and Texas (1.2 million). It’s not hard to imagine their legislators voting to turn away Medicaid services for their poorest residents in order to preserve their status as bulwarks against reproductive health rights for women and couples.

The reaction of congressional Republicans to a proposal that would actually have protected IVF providers and patients from legal peril gives the game away. That measure, the “Access to Family Building Act,” was introduced by Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.), who had her two children with the help of IVF.

Duckworth’s bill would have given Americans a legal right to access IVF and empowered patients and the Department of Justice to sue any state or state official who infringed that right. More to the point, it explicitly granted IVF patients “all rights regarding the use or disposition of reproductive genetic materials,” which would preempt any state from undertaking the same interference with the process endorsed by the Alabama court.

Republicans blocked Duckworth’s bill in the Senate. Asked about that on Bloomberg TV, Cruz said that her bill “seeks to back-door in broader abortion legislation.” This is just arrant claptrap. Duckworth’s measure has nothing to do with abortion; it deals explicitly and exclusively with “assisted reproductive technology” as it has been defined in federal law since 1992. Cruz’s beef with it plainly is that it is devoid of the anti-IVF loopholes that he and Britt wrote into their bill.

The cases before the Alabama Supreme Court were brought by two couples whose embryos were accidentally destroyed by an intruder at the Mobile clinic where they were frozen and stored. (Both couples had had healthy babies conceived via IVF.) The court made clear in its 8-1 decision that its rationale had nothing to do with science, and much more to do with religion.

“The theologically based view of the sanctity of life adopted by the People of Alabama,” wrote Chief Justice Tom Parker in a concurring opinion, is that “human life cannot be wrongfully destroyed without incurring the wrath of a holy God.”

The justices adopted the doctrine of legal “personhood” beloved of the antiabortion camp. “All members of this Court,” Mitchell wrote, “agree that an unborn child is a genetically unique human being whose life begins at fertilization and ends at death.”

Column: Threats to criminalize out-of-state abortions are a scary reminder of 1850s America

The Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 was America’s most detested law. Why are some anti-abortion states trying to duplicate it?

July 12, 2022

As for how the 1872 law applies, the court employed the “originalist” doctrine largely crafted by the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, who maintained that a law must be interpreted the way its original drafters understood it to mean. Scalia is cited 10 times in the Alabama decision, but in this case the justices squeezed “originalism” until it screamed for mercy.

“Unborn children are ‘children’ under the Act,” Mitchell wrote, “without exception based on developmental stage, physical location, or any other ancillary characteristic.” Yet the idea that 19th century lawmakers contemplated that unborn children could survive outside the womb as were the frozen embryos, and granted them legal rights is plainly absurd. The birth of Louise Brown, the very first IVF baby, was in 1978.

The sole dissenter on the Alabama court, Greg Cook, warned that “the main opinion’s holding almost certainly ends the creation of frozen embryos through in vitro fertilization in Alabama.” His concerns were dismissed by his colleagues in the majority — his “prediction does not seem to be well-founded,” sniffed Parker. Yet the IVF centers serving the bulk of patients in the state shut down in the immediate wake of the decision.

After Gov. Kay Ivey signed a protective law in March purporting to give IVF providers legal immunity, two resumed operations, but not the Mobile clinic connected with the case. And many experts are unsure whether the new law is as effective as its sponsors claim .

That’s the legacy of the U.S. Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision. Antiabortion agitators have signaled that they’ll use any means they can persuade religiously inclined judges to accept, even outlawing contraceptives . Granting “personhood” to cryogenically frozen embryos that can’t be seen without a microscope is just one step on the path to the legal chaos they believe works in their favor.

In their Wall Street Journal op-ed, Cruz and Britt shed crocodile tears over the fact that, following the Alabama decision, “confusion and misinformation has spread, inflamed by partisan commentary.” This was a majestically dishonest take. Their own bill demonstrates that “partisan commentary” had nothing to do with the confusion. The Alabama decision was its cause. Their own bill would only make things worse, and you can be sure that they know it.

Protesters shout as they join thousands marching around the Arizona Capitol after the Supreme Court decision to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade abortion decision Friday, June 24, 2022, in Phoenix. The Supreme Court on Friday stripped away women’s constitutional protections for abortion, a fundamental and deeply personal change for Americans' lives after nearly a half-century under Roe v. Wade. News | former chapman law dean, trump attorney john eastman challenges license loss, column: evil and fraud are behind legal setbacks, not any culpability of the accused, backers insist.

travel and adventure show 2022 letter legit

On Friday, May 31, Eastman asked the independent court handling attorney discipline cases to review the decision against him by Judge Yvette Roland.

In March, Roland concluded that Eastman, former dean of Chapman University’s law school, betrayed the fundamental oaths he swore to uphold as a licensed attorney. “Despite the depth, breadth, and complexity of the case law and historical context cited by the parties, this disciplinary proceeding boils down to an analysis of whether or not Eastman, in his role as the attorney for then-President Donald Trump … and his re-election campaign, acted dishonestly,” Roland wrote.

WASHINGTON, DC - JUNE 16: An image of John Eastman and Rudy Giuliani is displayed on a screen during the third hearing held by the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the U.S. Capitol on June 16, 2022 in the Cannon House Office Building in Washington, DC. The bipartisan committee, which has been gathering evidence related to the January 6, 2021 attack at the U.S. Capitol for almost a year, is presenting its findings in a series of televised hearings. On January 6, 2021, supporters of President Donald Trump attacked the U.S. Capitol Building in an attempt to disrupt a congressional vote to confirm the electoral college win for Joe Biden. (Photo by Tom Brenner-Pool/Getty Images)

He did, she concluded, and should be disbarred from the practice of law in California, and be stricken from the roll of attorneys.

Eastman’s request for a review of her decision goes to the presiding and associate judges of the Bar Court (California, incidentally, is the only state with an independent professional court dedicated to ruling on attorney discipline cases). If either party dislikes the decision there, it can be appealed to the state Supreme Court.

An appeal is not an inexpensive proposition. Eastman’s trial stretched out over 32 days, and the cost for trial transcripts for a review topped $20,000. But he’s been busy fundraising as of late — including photo ops and speeches at the recent CAGOP convention in Burlingame — and has collected more than $870,000 (of his $1.5 million goal) on GiveSendGo.

Eastman makes regular appearances on decidedly out-of-the-mainstream shows, continuing to beat the “massive fraud in 2020” drum despite lacking evidence of same (and despite Roland’s observation that he must be disbarred because he refuses to acknowledge any wrongdoing).

On Emerald Robinson’s “Absolute Truth” show on MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell’s FrankSpeech platform, he called the Trump guilty verdicts in New York a “judicial lynching” (a jury of 12 found Trump guilty, not the judge), urged Trump’s lawyers to appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court for intervention (despite this being a matter in state, not federal, court), and raised the frightening possibility of violence in November.

It’s worth noting that host Robinson once warned that COVID vaccines carry clues for none other than Satan himself (!), famously tweeting: “Dear Christians: the vaccines contain a bioluminescent marker called LUCIFERASE so that you can be tracked.”

Robinson said, “It looks like Trump support is overwhelming.” Eastman said it looks like Trump “is guaranteed to win right now.”

“You are at the forefront of shining light on a subject where darkness benefits those only interested in their own power and wealth – keep going,” wrote a recent donor to Eastman. “Trump, the man of spirit, truth and love! God bless,” wrote another.

If things don’t go their way, it can only because there’s fraud, they assert. Is anyone else afraid?
