What training or studies are needed to work in a travel agency.

Before we delve into the different courses that allow you to work in a travel agency, let's start by highlighting the fact that no diploma is required if you want to open your own agency or work in one. In fact, since 2015, it is no longer mandatory to have a BTS in tourism or a similar degree to create your own travel agency. You can therefore practice without a diploma, however skills and experience remain key elements for success. Let's not fool ourselves, creating this type of company, or even just working in it, is not within reach of those who are not passionate about the subject of travel and foreign cultures, and furthermore, it is never too late to train and learn. If you have no diploma to help you, but you want to change your career to become a travel agent for example, know that it will be possible to train yourself via your "Compte Personnel de Formation" (CPF). Inquire with Pôle Emploi to find out where your account stands and how much you have to train yourself. After having said all this, let's now take a look at the courses that are most often favored before entering the world of work in a travel agency. After high school: 2 years to obtain a BTS in tourism or operational commercial management; 3 years for the BUT (Bachelor Universitaire de Technologie) in commercialization techniques. Specialized schools also offer bachelor's degrees. After a two-year degree: - BTS in operational commercial management - BTS in tourism - Salesperson in business travel and tourism After a three-year degree: - BUT in commercialization techniques - Professional license in tourism professions: commercialization of tourism products - Professional license in tourism and leisure professions After a five-year degree: - Master of Science in Tourism and Destination Management

What is the scope of intervention of a professional?

On a daily basis, the activities of a travel agent are diverse and varied, so much so that the professional will rarely have time to get bored during their days, provided their agency is running properly. These tasks can be very different from one company to another. However, to give you a more precise idea of what to expect when practicing this profession, we will summarize for you all the main functions, as well as the most common, for which a travel agent is responsible: - To start, they must of course be familiar with their agency's tourist offerings in order to inform their customers and be able to illustrate their point with detailed information if necessary. - They must also be able to welcome customers in person or over the phone, with the appropriate tone, voice and warmth. - They must also respond to requests for quotes or information by email, which is an administrative task that takes a lot of time and requires organization and rigor at all times. - They must also select tourism products according to the customer's request, then present their characteristics in a constructive and, if possible, argumentative way (the strengths, the prices). - They must also advise the client on the different products (transportation, services), make the reservation, and then establish the contractual documents necessary for the commercial exchange. - They must also check travel documents in advance so that the traveler does not encounter any unpleasant surprises during their trip. - They must also establish the terms of settlement of a dispute or pass it on to legal or litigation services. - They must also provide information for monitoring activity supports so that the agency can have an overall view of its activity and its evolution over time. - They must organize the display of the sales space, with a certain marketing spirit. - Finally, they must perform sales promotion operations, especially during periods specifically conducive to this.

Why use a professional?

The idea of traveling is often a source of anxiety for those who are preparing for it, as there are many things to consider so that the trip goes smoothly and without any hiccups. In this section, we will specifically discuss the main reasons why you should consider using a travel agency or at least a professional in the sector to organize your trip. Preparing for a trip, even one of just a few days, is not easy. Certainly, a lot of information is available on the internet, but compiling it all to organize your future trip takes a lot of time. First, let's realize that going through a travel agency will allow you to save a lot of time. No need to spend several hours searching for the right flight or finding a hotel to sleep in, finding a rental car, etc. Calling on a professional means giving yourself more time to devote to other things that could also, why not, optimize your trip. Then, entrusting the organization of your trip to a provider means trusting the experience and know-how of a professional who has the required skills to organize a trip that meets your expectations and advise you properly, both in terms of tourism, legal, or even geographical aspects. Calling on a professional, contrary to what one might think, often turns out to be less expensive in the end than organizing everything yourself. Indeed, thanks to their relations with suppliers, the professional is likely to find very good deals for you and offer unbeatable prices, for example for flights, but also for accommodations. It is precisely the addition of all this that will allow you to save money. To conclude this section, we would like to emphasize that for each of us, safety and assurance during the trip are two essential things, regardless of the final destination. Thanks to their total mastery of the travel world, a travel professional will be committed to ensuring your safety throughout your stay. Furthermore, you will benefit from after-sales service and, in the event of an unforeseen circumstance (whether it be a canceled flight, an airline strike, or other), you can obtain assistance simply by contacting your travel agent, who will then take care of finding a solution to your problem.

When should you call a professional?

There isn't really a rule about this, as long as you don't wait until the last minute. Consider that the sooner, the better, so planning a trip to the other side of the world cannot be done overnight. The agent has to find a flight, accommodation options at the destination, and a whole bunch of other services that you might want to take advantage of once you're there. It is therefore better to start planning at least a few weeks or months in advance. This will also allow you to benefit from better prices, which is not insignificant. Note, however, that some agencies specify a maximum anticipation date, meaning that, for example, it will not be possible to book a flight or even a hotel 2 or 3 years in advance... but this is natural and almost goes without saying.

How to find a professional to organize your trip?

No matter where you are or where you want to go, finding this type of service is relatively easy, as long as you don't live in a too remote area. Whether you live in Puerto Galera downtown or in the deepest countryside, start by asking your acquaintances and loved ones, although it must be acknowledged that word-of-mouth is not necessarily the most effective way to find the rare gem (but you never know...). If you live in a very remote area, in the middle of the countryside, not finding a travel agency nearby (within 20 or 30 kilometers) should not stop you or discourage you; be sure that you will find an agency in the nearest medium or large city! In any case, rest assured that the right professional, once contacted, will be more than willing to make your life easier, and if necessary, subsequent exchanges can be done through emails or phone calls. If word-of-mouth yields nothing, which is very possible, then it is recommended to use the internet, by consulting a site like StarOfService, for example, which lists all professionals in a certain field, based on where you're conducting the search. In just a few clicks, the site will provide you with the contact details of the said professional and you can contact them right away, and this also applies to travel agents. From there, you are free to shop around or simply choose the one closest to your home, it is no longer our concern...

How much does a travel agency service cost?

The rates that we are going to indicate here are not contractual, but simply average values obtained throughout the French territory. Each agency has its own way of billing, so we cannot recommend enough that you ask for the details of the services from the relevant agent. Only then can you have a precise idea of what you are paying for. Having said that, let's now move on to the pricing, which, while not to be taken as exact figures, will still give you an idea of the prices practiced on the market. In general, it should be noted that the majority of a travel agency's income comes from commissions paid by the various suppliers involved during the stay; these are percentages that are taken from each sale made. Generally, the agent on average takes between 8% and 10% of the public price for a plane ticket sold; regarding other services, the percentage is between 9 and 15% of the public price. Consulting fees, act and reservation fees are also sources of income for a travel agency, but it is up to each brand to quantify its services. Therefore, you will have to ask the question or inquire when the time comes.

How to choose the right travel agent or agency?

No matter where you are or live, whether in a particular city, region or department, finding this type of professional is relatively simple, based on studies on the subject. So whether you live in the inner city of Puerto Galera or in the depths of the countryside in Moselle or Gironde, we advise you to start by asking around among your acquaintances and friends, as word of mouth is always a good way to find the right address for such things (we all know people who have traveled through a particular agency, so let's start by looking in that direction...). If this first search yields no results, it is then possible to use the Internet, as it is the most common way to purchase travel services, not physical agencies. Once online, no matter which search engine is used, we suggest consulting a site like StarOfService, for example, which lists all professionals in a particular field, depending on the location of the search and where you live. In just a few clicks, the site will provide you with the contact details of the professional and you can contact them within minutes to inquire about their availability, rates, etc. Don't hesitate to consult a large number of customer reviews and comments, as they are essential information for getting an idea of the level of service provided by the agent or agency in question.

Here are some questions to ask a travel professional during your first meeting:

- How long have you been practicing this profession? What training or diploma do you possess to carry out this activity? - What are your rates? Can I have a detailed breakdown of them? - Will you provide me with a proper quote prior to starting the work? - What are your availability to discuss my travel project? - Can you guarantee the respect of deadlines and rates that we agree upon?

How to Get to Puerto Galera

Your main jump-off point when going to Puerto Galera is Manila. It only takes around 3-4 hours to get there from Manila. You can either make a land trip to Batangas Pier by bus or by private car then sea travel by ferry or RoRo or fly directly by seaplane.

It is the more common option for most vacationers. The most popular route is the bus from Manila to Batangas Pier. Major bus lines have regular trips from Buendia LRT (Light Rail Train) station in Pasay City and Cubao, Quezon City terminals.

Regardless of where you come from, it will cost you around Php 200 one way. If you’re coming from the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Pasay City, the Buendia LRT terminal is your best option.

Trips start at 12:00 am until 10:30 pm, and there’s a bus every 30 minutes. You could try your luck being a chance passenger.

However, if you want added convenience, it’s best to purchase tickets online at the bus line websites. The travel time from the terminals to the Batangas Pier takes approximately 1.5-2 hours, depending on traffic conditions.

The route of the private car is pretty much the same as taking a bus and ferry. However, you will have to leave your vehicle at the Batangas Pier and ride a ferry. You can also load it on a Roll-On Roll-Off vessel (RoRo) if you want to take your car with you to Puerto Galera.

Navigation apps like Google Map and Waze will be your handy guide on finding your way to the pier. You may ask assistance for the RoRo if you wish to bring your ride, or secure the rates from the admin office about parking fees.

By Ferry

Once you’re at the Batangas Pier, go to Terminal 3. You can choose to ride a regular ferry or a Supercat (fast craft) depending on the schedule and your budget.

If you’re planning to go to Sabang beach, choose Muelle Port as your destination. If you're visiting White Beach, on the other hand, select pier Balatero.

Regular Ferry

You have to purchase another ticket this time for the ferry. It operates on a first-come-first-serve basis. The travel time takes approximately 1.5 hours and costs around Php 550.00 round trip.

There’s an option to ride a catamaran vessel. You can also board this from Batangas. It’s considered a safer ride versus the ferries when the waves are active, or the weather is particularly bad or unpredictable.

It doesn’t go directly but instead alights in Calapan Port. From here, you can take a jeepney or van directly to your resort in Puerto Galera.

The travel time from Batangas to Calapan is 1 hour, while Calapan to Puerto Galera is 1.5 hours. Ticket fares are depending on the age of the passenger.

If you’re looking for a fast and no-hassle way to get to the island, a seaplane is the best option. It only takes 30 minutes from Manila, making it a perfect getaway choice for extremely busy vacationers who want to make a quick getaway.

As of writing, there’s only one seaplane carrier that makes round trip flights from Manila to Puerto Galera, twice a day: Air Juan . You pay for speed and convenience. It is one of the newer methods to get to the destination as well.

Tricycle in Puerto Galera

Jeepney

Classic Filipino jeepneys ply the major roads of Puerto Galera. You can ride these if you're traveling to and from the different towns in the Oriental Mindoro, especially if you're coming from the pier areas. These can carry 10 or more passengers at a time. Often, the driver waits for the jeepney to be full before leaving the pier.

These are the main transportation options if you're traveling short distances within the towns or significant areas of Puerto Galera. It can fit 4-6 people depending on the layout of the tricycle. Compared to the jeepney, tricycles can get through narrow roads because of its smaller size.

Private Car or Van

If you want to explore other areas or other destinations in Oriental Mindoro, hiring a private car or van with a driver is a good option. It is perfect for you if you’re not familiar with the local public transportation and are traveling with a big group or kids.

Hiring a private car or van with a driver will also provide you with a local driver who is knowledgeable on the tourist spots.

Sabang Beach

This area is famous for diving spots, so it's no wonder it has the most number of diving resorts. Next to White Beach, this is also a popular tourist destination. However, the pier for this area is different from White Beach since it's located at a different part of Puerto Galera.

Aninuan Beach

This beach area is situated right next to the more famous White Beach. You can opt to book accommodation here if you want a less touristy and quieter stay. Take note that you will have to hire a tricycle to go to the tourist spots outside of Aninuan Beach if you're staying in this area.

Seafood available at Puerto Galera restaurants, and resorts

Of course, food is one of the most critical parts of any trip. The restaurants you eat in can largely influence your budget, and can even make or break your experience.

Be mindful of your diet restrictions and food allergies before going to a specific restaurant. It’s a good thing you can reach out to most of these restaurants and view their menu online before you go.

As a beach and diving destination, Puerto Galera has become home to foreign tourists aside from the locals who live here. So it's not surprising that the restaurants here include a wide variety of cuisine from Filipino to Italian.

Seafood is fresh here, so don't miss the opportunity to eat at beachfront restaurants offering grilled fish, squid, shrimps, and more.

Some are even presented on a table of the banana leaf, lining up with steaming white rice. It is a Filipino eating tradition called a boodle fight where you're supposed to eat with your hands.

Similar to Boracay, Puerto Galera also has a vibrant nightlife, so you'll see a lot of bars here lined up by the beach filled with tourists at night. Not to miss is the Mindoro Sling, their local version of the Singapore Sling.

Its version is a concoction of rum, tropical juices like orange, pineapple, mango, lime, with grenadine syrup and lime soft drink. A shot glass of this isn't enough so order up a pitcher or a tower for your group.

Check out some of the most popular restaurants to fill you up after an active day swimming or diving.

The Verandah Restaurant

This highly-rated resto serves a fusion of Filipino-Asian cuisine. Their specialty is seafood, but they also have gluten-free, vegan, and vegetarian-friendly options. People love to drink quality wines and cocktails here too!

Papa Fred’s Steakhouse

Judging from the name of this resto itself, you’ll be pleased to know that there’s a place that offers traditional American cuisine in Puerto Galera. The ambiance is pretty romantic, so this is a great venue option for dates. Don’t worry, if you have vegetarian friends with you, they can still tag along as this resto will present food options for them.

Jack Daniel’s Apartments Restaurants

It is the top-rated resto and it’s more moderately-priced than the above options! Described as a “hidden gem,” this is the place people keep coming back to no matter what cuisine they want to eat.

They have an international cuisine that satisfies just about any palate, so you’re sure to find a new favorite each time you visit.

Relax Restaurant

If you want to have traditional Pinoy comfort food dishes, Relax Restaurant might be your top pick. They serve large portions of your favorite silog (viand with fried rice and egg) meals and sisig to daring options such as seafood curry and spicy katsu.

Capt’n Gregg’s

To round off this list, you can’t go wrong with visiting a local pub to get your drinks while you enjoy the views of the ocean. It’s a great place to hang out with equally yummy meals to boot, all without burning a hole in your pocket!

Before you start planning your Puerto Galera trip, take note of these travel tips for a hassle-free vacation.

Currency

The majority of establishments accept payments in Philippine Peso (PHP) and cash, so make sure that you bring enough before heading to the beach areas and your resort.

There are ATMs in the Batangas Pier, also a few in some towns. But it's not guaranteed that these machines will be always online. Credit cards are accepted in some resorts, usually the luxury ones, so it's best to check with your resort first.

Locals speak Iraya, Filipino, and English. The majority of the resort and tourism-related employees are fluent in essential to intermediate English so that communication won't be a problem here for foreign tourists.

You can do most of the activities in Puerto Galera and have an excellent stay for three days and two nights. Couple shot in Puerto Galera sandbar

Our Budget-Friendly Puerto Galera Island Hopping Tour

One of the activities you shouldn’t miss in Puerto Galera is island hopping. An island hopping tour will allow you to sightsee the sandbars and beach coves around the island, as well as explore some of its best snorkeling areas.

Hali and I availed of this tour in the summer of 2022. I was happy to learn that there are exclusive tours available even for couples — which means we didn’t have to look for other joiners. Our itinerary includes the Underwater Cave, Coral Garden, and Giant Clams.

Here’s our Puerto Galera island hopping tour experience!

Underwater Cave

Coral garden, giant clams, island hopping rates, travel tips, what to read next:, our island hopping experience.

I booked this tour a day in advance. The tour includes transport from/to White Beach, so early morning we set off from our hotel resort in Aninuan to a designated point in the area. A tricycle then fetched us to the Sand Bar, which is the jump-off point of tours.

Couple shot in Puerto Galera sandbar

The Sand Bar is basically a stretch of sand that separates Mindoro and Boquete Island. It’s particularly beautiful during high tide, when it’s submerged in water.

Puerto Galera island hopping tour

From there, we rode a small outrigger boat to our first destination: Underwater Cave.

The Underwater Cave is essentially a small opening in the rocks, where you can find a natural pool. It’s a spot for picture-taking only.

The tour boats let off the tourists at the adjacent beach. From there, you just need to climb up the rocks to the entrance of the cave. It’s easy to find, but if you want, you can also hire a local guide to assist you. This is especially helpful since the rock surfaces are scraggly and also so you have someone to take your photos in the cave from above.

Puerto Galera Underwater Cave

Once you have your picture taken, you can buy drinks and snacks at the stalls along the beach. There are also fresh sea urchins sold there. The vendor will crack it open for you and you can eat it with vinegar dip.

Let me be honest, our tour boat got us here but we decided not to proceed to the underwater cave itself because we saw the long queue at the entrance. We were advised that the waiting may even be longer than the time we’ll be spending in the cave. We weren’t enthusiastic about that and we told our boatman that we really just wanted to swim and snorkel, so off we went to the Coral Garden.

The Coral Garden is one of the best dive spots in Puerto Galera. It’s also popular for snorkeling activity due to its shallow water. This area is filled with corals and tropical fishes, as well as rare species such as the lionfish. Rare crabs and flatworms also live here.

Tour boats usually ask their guests to hold onto the rope, so the latter can snorkel while the boat moves slowly around the snorkeling area. As for us, we opted to snorkel on our own.

Snorkeling in Puerto Galera

I was honestly amazed with the abundance of the coral and marine life here. For a place as popular as Puerto Galera, I expected to see “wear and tears” in the marine areas. But it was pristine. I believe we even saw a snake hiding under a rock at one point. Later on, someone gave me leftover bread for fish feeding and Hali and I alternated between giving the fishes bits of bread.

Puerto Galera Coral Garden

I’d been told that sea turtles can also be spotted here, usually in the late afternoon when there are fewer boats.

Our boatman explained that the Coral Garden is a protected marine area. I looked it up and apparently the waters in and around Puerto Galera area are indeed protected and preserved under UNESCO .

The Giant Clams Farm is located just a few minutes away from the Coral Garden. Here you can see giant clams, some as old as 60 years. Some are kept inside cages, while some are left in the open.

It was interesting to see the giant clams underwater. They aren’t as big as the giant clams in Camiguin , but they were still a sight to behold. There were also schools of anchovy (dilis) swimming around the area.

Giant clams farm in Puerto Galera

We didn’t stay a long time here because there were too many boats crowded where the giant clams are. The current was also strong. Our boatman asked us to hold onto the rope, so we could snorkel a bit more before going back to the sandbar.

The whole island hopping tour took about 3 hours. It’s short, but honestly we didn’t realize the time because we were having so much fun. We enjoyed exploring the underwater sights in Puerto Galera.

I was also glad that this activity was very affordable. The equipment provided was good. One minor thing that made the experience so much better is that the lifevests were just the right size. Oftentimes, tours provide lifevests that are too big so you end up suffocating in the water, which is thankfully not the case here.

This is a great experience that I’d do again once I re-visit Puerto Galera.

How to book your own Puerto Galera island hopping tour

Island hopping tours are offered by various travel agencies in Puerto Galera. If you’re staying in White Beach, you’ll find a lot of vendors offering this tour.

Hotels and resorts normally have more expensive tour packages, so it’s best to book outside.

The island hopping tour that we availed cost P600 per person (min 2 pax).

This includes transport to/from White Beach, exclusive boat use and snorkeling equipment, and visit to the following areas: Underwater Cave, Coral Garden, and Giant Clams. We used a small outrigger boat only.

You will find other types of island hopping packages. With bigger boats, you can visit beaches as well, including Bayanan Beach, Haligi Beach, Long Beach, or Friday Beach. This option is ideal if you are willing to pay a bit more and/or you’re in a group.

Here are the current Puerto Galera island hopping tour rates ( Updated as of 2022 ):

Other optional expenses include aqua shoes rental for P100 per person.

Puerto Galera sandbar during hightide

  • There is a barbecue area at the sandbar that offers group meals. You can give an advanced order so you can eat when you get back. You can also buy snacks and drinks at San Antonio Beach where the underwater cave is.
  • It’s best to wear durable sandals or aquashoes in the underwater cave because of the scraggly surface. Flimsy slippers is not ideal as they can break.
