We will start our interesting tour by going to the stunning views from the “Mirador de Carmen Alto” where you can see the whole Chilina Valley) and the Mirador de Yanahuara.

It is located in the Cayma District, and is located 6 km from the center of Arequipa and is owned by Mrs. Miriam Cáceres, who has a small business of natural products and traditional juices there.

In this haven of peace, we can be enchanted by the landscape, enjoying a wonderful view of the valley of the Chili River, joining in the distance with the tutelary volcanoes of the city.

St. Catherine’s Monastery

The Monastery of Santa Catalina de Siena, or also known as the Convent of Santa Catalina, is a religious tourist complex located in the historic center of Arequipa.

What makes the visit especially interesting is that the monastery is itself a small city, 20,000m2 surrounded by a 4-meter-high wall that separated the life of the cloistered nuns from that of the rest of the inhabitants of Arequipa.

History of the Monastery of Santa Catalina

The history of the Monastery of Santa Catalina dates back to the 16th century. When the Spaniards were already settled in Peru, Francisco de Toledo visited the city of Arequipa and listened to the wishes of its inhabitants, who asked for the creation of a place where the nuns could carry out their work and have the religious life they desired.

Thus, the viceroy ordered the construction of a great monastery without knowing that, years later, it would become one of the most important in the country.

On September 10, 1579, when the city of Arequipa had not even reached 40 years since its foundation, the Santa Catalina Monastery was inaugurated, an authentic jewel of colonial architecture that remains standing to this day.

The first nuns who lived here came from different parts of the country and different social classes: they were Creoles, mestizos and even daughters of curacas, the political leaders of the Inca Empire, but they all shared one main characteristic: they had the same religious devotion.

The Monastery of Santa Catalina hosted hundreds of nuns for years who lived without practically any connection to the outside until, in 1970, they decided to open it to the public so that all tourists and citizens of Arequipa could know and enjoy this mysterious place.

How to get to the Santa Catalina Monastery?

The Santa Catalina Monastery is located just a few blocks from the city’s imposing Plaza de Armas, so you can get there from any point in the historic center of Arequipa.

The city of Arequipa has a fairly stable climate, with moderate rainy seasons between January and March, so the visit to the monastery can be done without inconvenience throughout the year.

Visiting hours to the Santa Catalina Monastery?

The Santa Catalina Monastery is open every day of the year with the exception of Good Friday, December 25 and January 1. Hours are Thursday through Monday from 9:00 a.m. m. at 5:00 p.m. m. and Tuesdays and Wednesdays, from 9:00 a.m. m. to 8 p. m.

The Cloisters of the Society of Jesus

The Cloisters of the Society of Jesus were built attached to the Temple, its completion date was in the year 1738.

For a short time it was the premises of the Jesuit College “Santiago”, since then the expulsion of the Jesuits was ordered in 1767.

In 1788, at the request of Bishop Chávez de la Rosa, part of the Cloisters became a hospice for orphaned children. After the Arequipa Public Charity was created, this institution took over the hospice, and for this reason reforms were introduced in the Cloisters.

The Cloisters consist of two large patios with arches and a third smaller one, the first one stands out for its Baroque style.

Currently the Cloisters are occupied by businesses related to tourist activity, such as restaurants, crafts, etc.

Located in the historic center, on the left side of the Iglesia de la Compañía, with sculpted ashlar arches, beautiful corridors; also called Pasaje Romaña, and currently occupied by commercial establishments. Located on the corner of the Plaza de Armas, between General Morán and Álvarez Thomas streets.

Tours al Colca en 1 día Full Day

El valle del Colca es uno de los destinos más extraordinarios del país. En toda la zona pueden verse coloridos andenes preíncas cultivados, y en la Cruz del Cóndor puede apreciarse el majestuoso vuelo de los cóndores.

El tour al Colca de 1 día, iniciamos con el recojo a las 3:00 am, para dirigirnos hacia Chivay, aproximadamente 3 horas con 30 minutos, por la carretera actual de Arequipa, Juliaca, Puno, Cusco, hasta llegar a Pampa Cañahuas, ahí tomamos el desvió para luego llegar a Chivay, el pueblo más importante en el Valle del Colca, donde tomaremos nuestro desayuno, y después saldremos por un camino rústico hacia la Cruz del Condor, disfrutando de la bonita vista del valle del Colca, con sus terrazas pre-incas, el viaje dura una hora y media hasta la Cruz del Cóndor, desde donde se puede observar el Cañón del Colca y el vuelo de los Cóndores.

Después de haber disfrutado del tour al Cañón del Colca y el vuelo del Cóndor retornamos por el mismo camino hacia Chivay, pero haremos algunas paradas, la primera parada es en el pueblo de Pinchollo (Mirador de Wayrapunko). Donde se tiene una magnifica vista de todo el valle del Colca.

La Segunda parada es el mirador de Antahuilque donde se puede observar las terrazas en forma de anfiteatro y las lagunas misteriosas del valle del Colca.

La cuarta parada se visita el pueblo de Maca. La quinta parada es opcional, el pueblo de Yanque con su iglesia la más hermosa del valle del Colca. Luego se retorna a Chivay alrededor del medio día. Donde tendremos tiempo para almorzar. Después del almuerzo, regresaremos hacia Arequipa, llegando alrededor de las 17:00 hrs, dejándolos en sus respectivos hoteles. Precio por persona

ITINERARIO DETALLADO

09:00am – Los recogemos de su respectivo hotel para dar inicio a nuestro tour.

Nuestra primera parada será el Mirador de Carmen Alto , que se encuentra ubicado en el distrito de Cayma, desde ahí se podrá apreciar todo el Valle de Chilina , además de la andenería del lugar; es un lugar excelente para poder apreciar los volcanes: Misti, Chachani y Pichupichu.

Luego vamos a visitar el distrito de Yanahuara con su principal atractivo los cuales son los Portales de Yanahuara , construcción hecha en base a Sillar, y también veremos la plaza e Iglesia del distrito.

Continuamos nuestro recorrido hacia el centro histórico para visitar la Plaza de Armas de Arequipa en donde se dará una explicación detallada de la historia de la Catedral de Arequipa y de los portales que rodean a la Plaza de Armas. Posteriormente nos dirigimos hacia la Iglesia de la Compañía de Jesús en donde daremos una breve explicación acerca de la historia de la iglesia y de su construcción.

Claustros de la Compañía de Jesús , Ubicado en el centro histórico, al costado izquierdo de la Iglesia de la Compañía, con arquería de sillar esculpido, hermosos corredores.

Casa Tristán del Pozo , es un edificio que para muchos estudiosos de la arquitectura, el frontón de la fachada de esta casona es el mejor exponente de la ornamentación típica de Arequipa, en el Perú.

Plaza e Iglesia de San Francisco , conforman una de las edificaciones más bellas de la ciudad

Visitaremos el Monasterio de Santa Catalina considerada una ciudadela colonial dentro de otra ciudad; ahí se pueden apreciar recintos que se construyeron de acuerdo a sus necesidades religiosas; posee calles y avenidas, además tiene su propio cementerio.

Colca Canyon Full day tour starts at  at 3:00 AM with the pick up from the Arequipa hotel by the tour guide, the tour begins with the directly travel to the first and most important town of the canyon: Chivay (3 hours by tourist transport).

At 6AM you will be in Chivay (3600m) an andean town located on the left side of the Colca Canyon; surrounded by agriculture fields.

After the breakfast in Chivay, we will leave to the Cruz del Condor viewpoint; in route we will found the beautiful Yanque town with the wititi dancers, the terraces and the different natural viewpoints: Antahuilque and the Choquetico Tombs,

Arrival to The Cruz del Condor for watching the Andean Condor (Vulture Gryphus).

Return to Chivay, visiting Maca (where is possible to observe a nice colonial church from XVI century, next to this town is possible to see people dedicated to work the terraces.

We will arrive to Chivay and visit to the hot springs La Calera, where you can enjoy the thermo medicinal pools and spend a relaxing time in the hot springs and return to Chivay for having lunch and leave back to Arequipa city.

Along the way we will visit the highest point between the Colca Canyon and Arequipa: Patapampa (4800m), from this place we can see the volcanic mountain range: The Ampato volcano where was founded “Juanita”.

We drive to Toqrapampa, where we can see small lagoons with Andean birds. We will continue to the Pampa Cañahuas National Park, where we will be able to see Lamas, Alpagas and vicugnas.

Arrive to Arequipa at 5PM, transfer to the hotel and end of the tour.

Important: Private tour includes short hikes to Achachihua viewpoint and Cruz del Cura viewpoint. both hikes are just available by private excursion.

Detailed Itinerary Full Day Tour:

03:00 – 03:30am

We will pick you up from your hostel and depart on our private bus to the Colca Canyon. After 4 hours of a bus journey, we will go directly to the Condor’s Cross, only stopping in Chivay to have breakfast.

We will arrive to the Condor’s Cross where we will appreciate the impressive views of one of the deepest canyons in the world and see the majestic Andean Condor bird that may be spotted flying just over your head (fingers crossed!). Get up close and get amazing photos of these birds whose presence create a truly unique experience at the Canyon.

On the way back to Chivay, we will stop in the villages of Pinchollo, Maca and Yanque, all small local villages which have colonial churches, tombs and Pre-Inca terraces, and we will really get to see the impact of living in the second deepest Canyon in the world.

We will arrive to Chivay to visit the hot springs if you wish and then we will stop to have lunch at a local restaurant.

On the way back to Arequipa, we will stop at Patapampa, an incredible viewpoint where you will see the Ampato, Sabancaya and Hualca Hualca volcanoes side by side. This is also the highest point that we will reach at 4800 meters above sea level in Pampa Cañahuas.

We will arrive back to Arequipa and drop you off at your hotel or hostel door.

How to get to Colca Canyon

The Colca Canyon is located about 4-hours outside of the city of Arequipa. The best way to get there is to take a tour or trek which includes transportation to and from Arequipa. For the FULL DAY tour, bring a small bag only. Large luggage can be stored at your accommodation in Arequipa.

What is the difference between the Colca Canyon TOURS and TREKS?

During the tours you will have limited walking sections as most of the time you stay on a bus and only get outside at several viewing points. The tours are more recommended for travelers who want (or because of physical conditions) have to take it easy. Treks however, are perfect for people with good physical condition. With treks you will definitely get more and intense views of the beautiful and unique landscape of the Canyon.

I do not want to take all of my stuff with me. Where can I leave my big bag?

Hotels and hostels in Arequipa will normally store your bags in their safety deposit for free whilst you are away at the Canyon, until you check-in again upon your return. Head off for the trip with just what you need and leave the rest in storage. Especially for the trek as you will need to carry what you take.

I woke up late and missed my tour pick up. Can I change it for tomorrow?

Peru Hop does not operate the Colca Tours. The operators will charge us fully for any NO SHOW or missed departure not previously cancelled before 17:00pm the day before. If you would like to book the tour again for the next day then this is possible but you will have to pay a second time.

Will I see Condors on this tour?

There are quite a few Condors out there and as we visit different viewing points the chances are quite good. We still cannot guarantee that you will be able to see them but if you get lucky they will fly just above your head!
