THINGS TO DO IN HANOVER JAMAICA

To be honest, Hanover isn’t a place that I have explored as much as I would love to. However, as you know the entire island is on my To-Do List, here however are some activities that I know of which that I really want to experience and this listing may also be helpful to you as we are Bucket Listing together as a family! It can sometimes be hard or tricky to find many activities in Hanover Jamaica. Due to Hanover being so close to Montego Bay many people will say somewhere is located in Montego Bay when it is really in Hanover.

What is Hanover known for?

Hanover is known as the area where a known national hero Alexander Bustamante was born, it is also known for its Yam and livestock rearing.

1. Go for a swim at Orchard Beach but be safe, go with a group of friends just in case.

2. Learn more about the history of the island and visit Fort Charlotte.

3. Go see and take pictures of the historical Hanover Parish Church.

4. If you are a history buff like me, you want to go find and check out Kenilworth Ruins.

5. You definitely want to check out Chukka Ocean Outpost at Sandy Bay and do one or all of the activities they have available.

6. Go and have a nice swing at Campbelton Mountain Adventures (I hope you are not scared of heights), but if so do some other adventures with them such as ATV. Campbelton offers ATV, Swing and Hike adventures. So if those sound like adventures for you, by all means, take a trip there.

7. There is a little island called Booby Cay Island, find a way to get over there and explore it, there isn’t much to it but water and trees, but it’s always great to explore.

8. Make sure you stay by one of the many Villas or All Inclusive Hotels. ✔✔✔

9. Go bamboo rafting on the Great River.

10. Most people think this is in Montego Bay but you can go and swim with dolphins at Dolphin Cove.

11. Visit Kool Runnings if they reopen….

12. Check out Missile Adventure Park.

13. Try a nice restaurant.

Where is Hanover located?

Hanover Jamaica can be found in Cornwall County. The capital of Hanover is Lucea, because of its proximity to Montego Bay and it’s a popular tourist destination, many places are said to be located in Montego Bay when they are really located in Hanover Jamaica. Also note that a part of Negril is in Hanover.

Located on the northwestern tip of the island is Hanover, a sleepy town often forgotten by tourists. Though Hanover is not one of Jamaica’s major tourist areas, the parish is home to several large hotels, including the Grand Palladium resort and spa . Sharing a border with Westmoreland also means that many locals and tourists often drive through the parish to get to Negril. If you’re ever passing through Hanover, check out these attractions.

Chukka at Sandy Bay

Journey into the hills of Hanover, where you’ll find the perfect combination of land and water at Chukka Sandy Bay. With picturesque views from the hills to the tranquil and refreshingly cool water of the magnificent Great River, this outpost is the perfect place for adventurers and nature lovers. Sit back and relax as you make your way down the river on a beautiful hand-crafted bamboo raft, while a certified raft captain teaches you about the history of the land and the many wonders that Jamaica has to offer. You can also choose to partake in various activities like Catamaran cruises, ocean-view trails for horseback and off-roading and jungle expeditions. The 160-acre property also has an ocean-side restaurant and bar, infinity pool and two beaches.

Kool Runnings

Although advertised as being in Negril, this major waterpark is actually located in Hanover, close to the border between the two parishes. As the largest waterpark in Jamaica, Kool Runnings has a variety of activities for guests including waterslides and tubing. But the adventures are not just in the water – there is also go-kart racing and paintball.

Rhodes Hall Plantation

Around ten kilometers northeast of Negril, this picturesque 220-hectare fruit-and-coconut plantation backs a small, attractive beach where hot mineral springs bubble up. Numerous attractions are on offer here, from a walking tour through the pristine coastal mangroves in search of crocodiles and excursions to a nearby Arawak cave, to horseback rides through the lush, hilly countryside and glass-bottom-boat outings to the offshore reef for snorkeling.

Fort Charlotte

Commanding the entrance to Lucea Harbor is the well-kept 18th-century Fort Charlotte, constructed in 1745 and renamed in 1778 to honor George III’s Queen Charlotte. (Prior to that year, it was listed as Lucea Fort.) It was erected in defense of the harbor and stands on a peninsula overlooking the sea channel. The War Office in Britain transferred the barracks and Fort Charlotte in 1862, as a gift to the Executive Committee of Jamaica.

Fort Charlotte

Commanding the entrance to Lucea Harbour is the well-kept eighteen century Fort Charlotte named in 1778 to honour George 11’s Queen Charlotte. Prior to that year it is listed as Lucea Fort and was constructed in 1745. It was erected in defense of the harbour and stands on a peninsular over-looking the sea channel. In 1862, the English war office transferred the barracks and Fort Charlotte as a gift to the Executive Committee of Jamaica.

Lucea Harbour

It is considered to be one of the best in the island. Although small, ships from Kingston and Montego Bay sought refuge there during the hurricane of 1951, as it was considered one of the safest harbours. It is almost completely cut off from the sea, only being connected by a narrow channel at its entrance.

The Old Lucea Court House

Situated in the centre of the town , it is now used as the Lucea Town Hall.

Located 6.4 km (four miles) west of Lucea in Hanover Hills, this is the birthplace of National Hero Sir Alexander Bustamante. The Jamaica National Heritage Trust acquired this three-acre property and the birthplace of our National Hero. It was reconstructed from descriptions of the original property given by a boyhood friend of Sir Alexander Bustamante and Sir Alexander Bustamante himself.

An annual celebration of the anniversary of his birthday is held in the square in Lucea and the house in Blenheim. The site of his home has been declared a National Monument.

Lucea Parish Church

The main structure of the Lucea Parish Church building dates back to the 18 th century. It was built in 1725 and is the oldest building in the parish of Hanover. It is said that a tunnel leads from underneath the church to nearby Fort Charlotte, which is approximately ¼ of a mile away.

It is approximately 9 miles east of Lucea (1mile on the main highway). At Kenilworth lie the ruins of one of the best examples of industrial architecture of the past – an old sugar factory and distillery. This is now the site for the Human Employment and Resource National Training Agency (HEART/NTA)

The Tryall Estate and Great House

This can be found on the main road between Hopewell and Sandy Bay just bordering the golf course there. It has been maintained as an attraction with a

Golf Course and Tennis and Beach Club. It is also the site of the Johnny Walker Golf Tournament.

Still to be found on the property are nineteenth century gravestone fragments, the ruins of a sugar works including a huge cast iron water wheel that still turns, an old cast iron boiler and a beautiful brick structure chimney.

Barbican Estate

This is located along the coast. It was originally a sugar estate. It houses the remains of a Great House, a windmill and a sugar factory. The estate dates back to the early eighteenth century. Although in ruins, these buildings have maintained their imposing structure and together with the other relics add to the old grandeur of the estate.

Belvidere Estate

Although Belvidere Estate is located in the parish of Hanover, it is in close proximity to Montego Bay, the capital of St. James. The estate was once a sugar plantation that produced sugar, rum and molasses for export to England and the United States.

At present the estate is used as a citrus plantation and heritage attraction. A daily tour of the living history museum is also provided. Visitors are shown the operation of some equipment necessary for the functioning of an eighteenth – nineteenth century estate, for example the blacksmith’s bellows and an operable sugar mill furnace for the production of wet sugar.

The Hanover Museum

It is situated on the site of an old barracks and workhouse for women, that later became a prison and police headquarters. Here the story of the parish is beautifully told through storyboards, artifacts and other memorabilia donated by citizens or purchased through grant funding.

The museum grounds have a gift shop stocked with craft and heritage souvenirs, rest facilities, a café, offices for the three volunteer staff and a lecture/exhibition room. The building has been declared protected by the Jamaica National Heritage Trust that has given the Historical Society a 21-year lease on the property for a small sum.

This followed the Hanover historical Society’s efforts to save the building from demolition by proving its historic worth, indicating that the structure was around in the 1770s.

The Hanover museum is a member of the Association of the Caribbean. It has the distinction of having been recognized by UNESCO.

The Chilean Ambassador to Jamaica, Adolfo Caraft visited the museum in April 1997 and conducted a special lecture highlighting the slaves’ experience in his country. The Ambassador also presented to the museum, replicas of pieces from the Spanish period from the pre-Colombian History Museum of Santiago, including ceramics and craft items linked to the Indian culture in his country along with a gift of Chilean wine.

Tourism to play vital role in Guyana’s new wave of economic development

A new wave of economic development has been unfolding in Guyana as a result of the discovery of oil and natural gas in that CARICOM nation.

The find is estimated to be worth at least US$150 billion and signs of the new wealth are everywhere: spanking new buildings, new and refreshed infrastructure, a surge in start-up businesses, Exxon ads in prominent places and a wave of technical support personnel rushing in from Trinidad & Tobago, Jamaica and elsewhere to support oil, gas and allied industries.

The tourism and hospitality sectors are projected for fast-track growth.

Kamrul Baksh, head of the Guyana Tourism Authority, speaking with The Gleaner at his Georgetown offices recently, was very upbeat and optimistic about the forecast for unprecedented growth in the country’s tourist industry. His elation, it appeared, was anchored in strong indicators. Last year, the country saw 319,000 arrivals, making it the best year ever for the sector.

“Guyana offers a range of very unique travel experiences. We’re more than the transactional tours, and we are more immersive, providing a mix of nature, adventure and culture without the push and shove,” Baksh sought to explain when asked what pull so many travellers to the South American outpost.

The country is actually one of the last frontiers of pristine rain forest in the world, enabling it to yield an astonishing variety of wildlife across its vast space. Within the area of wildlife, large cats, reptiles, birds of prey, fresh water fish and rodents are among the offerings.

“We have over 820 species of birds and so we actively promote Guyana as a birding destination,” Baksh stated. “Rivers and waterfalls too are a big part of our attractions including the Essequibo river, the third-largest river in South America and Kaieteur Waterfalls, the highest single drop waterfall in the world, plunging 741 ft, four time higher than Niagara Falls. We’ve been working with the private sector to develop more adventure activities that will include hiking, mountain biking and wilderness safaris with an emphasis on small, personalised groups,” he told The Gleaner .

Economic growth

The tourism director made it clear that tourism will be a major part of the current economic growth following on the oil and natural gas discovery that has thrown the country into the global spotlight.

“Ten new hotels are being built right now, including a few leading American brands like the AC Marriott, and they are being strategically placed across the country, not clustered in one location,” Baksh divulged. “This will add over 1,000 new rooms to the national inventory. One of the traditional hotels, the Pegasus, has just seen a multi-million dollar expansion with spanking new five-star suites that will cater to leisure and business travellers.”

With cash in hand, Guyana is also rapidly becoming the new epicentre for popular cultural entertainment in the Caribbean, and plane loads of visitors are now coming in to see premium acts, including a steady roster of reggae and dancehall artistes who are performing there at regular intervals. Burna Boy, Nigy Boy, Busy Signal and Tanya Stephens were just there performing and hotels and flights were sold out.

When asked about airlift, the tourism director, who is a University of the West Indies tourism and hospitality graduate, shared good news.

“We’ve been able to get British Airways back to Guyana after a 40-year absence from the local runways. United Airlines just launched a new service from Texas and we continue to enjoy service from American Airlines and JetBlue to support our number-one market, North America. Our number-two market is the Caribbean region, and we now have SKYHigh from the Dominican Republic doing three flights per week and, of course Caribbean Airlines, our long-standing partner for decades.”

The city of Georgetown is served by two international airports, and Trans Guyana Airways handles much of the traffic to the interior and Suriname.

Guyana’s former prime minister and current ambassador of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana to the United States in Washington, Samuel A. A. Hinds is equally upbeat about the future of tourism.“Our country is truly a treasured gem for travellers and we expect the rapid growth in this sector, especially in ecotourism, to continue in the foreseeable future,” he stated confidently.

Jamaica’s tourist arrivals continue to grow despite headwinds – Seiveright

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Senior Advisor and Strategist in the Ministry of Tourism, Delano Seiveright says official tourist arrival numbers as at the first week of May are ahead of the same period in 2023, which was a major growth year for the sector.

Seiveright noted that Jamaica recorded just over 1.7 million tourist arrivals up to the first week of May with just more than one million stopover arrivals and more than 700,000 cruise passengers.

“This represents a remarkable 4.6 per cent increase for stopover arrivals and a whopping 23 per cent increase for cruise passengers,” said Seiveright.

“The still strong numbers also reinforce the continued success of efforts and strategies piloted by Minister of Tourism Edmund Bartlett and his team since the devastating impact of the COVID -19 pandemic,” added Seiveright.

He pointed out that despite the decelerating effect of headwinds created by growing global economic uncertainties, relatively high inflation and interest rates in primary markets, and the negative effects of recent travel advisories, the Ministry of Tourism and its agencies continue to effect multipronged initiatives and actions to bolster growth.

Seiveright also noted that the world’s largest online travel agency, Expedia, recently cut 1,500 employees or nine per cent of its global staff due in part to slowing travel demand.

As it relates to most recent Level 3 US Travel advisory, Seiveright noted that Government at the very highest levels, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Kamina Johnson-Smith, Jamaica’s Ambassador to the United States, Audrey Marks and several other Government officials, private sector leaders and influential US citizens have and continue to treat this very seriously.

“There have been multiple engagements with high ranking US officials across the State Department, Congress and so on. Several other countries impacted by similar negative travel advisories have raised concerns too.

“The Jamaica Tourist Board also continues to work around the clock with its global team including its public relations and advertising teams and international partners like airlines, tour operators, travel agents, hotels and other critical stakeholders to drive Jamaica’s tourism growth efforts despite the odds,” said Seiveright.
