International Internships in Culinary Arts

Nothing is more central to a culture than food, and there is no better way to learn about food than by traveling. World Endeavors Culinary Arts internships offer the chance to learn about the cuisine of a particular country from the heart of a professional kitchen. Most interns work side-by-side with local professionals in the kitchens of fine restaurants where they assist in food preparation. Interns chop vegetables, measure ingredients, prepare salads and appetizers, and stir or strain soups, stews, and sauces. Interns also gain insight into how professional kitchens are managed in other countries.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON AN CULINARY ARTS INTERNSHIP

It is important for interns in the Culinary Arts to be prepared to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment. Good communication skills are important as is the willingness to work when needed. Interns should be prepared to learn about and immerse themselves in a new food culture. Prior academic coursework or professional experience in the culinary arts is not required, but these experiences may help in some internship placements.

HIGHLIGHTS & BENEFITS

  • International Culinary Arts interns immerse themselves in their host country’s culture and cuisine.
  • For aspiring cooks and restaurateurs, there’s no better way to gain firsthand experience with international styles of cooking.
  • An internship will demonstrate to future employers a commitment to working with cuisine, adaptability to different situations, and a readiness for the demands of working in a professional kitchen.

Intern Abroad FAQs

Where will i intern.

While some organizations have a list of open internships and place applicants in those positions, we work in the opposite direction. We first learn about you, your interests, goals and experience, and then actively pursue the internship that provides you with experience directly relevant to your future career.

What will I be doing at my internship?

Our internships are customized to fit each individual’s goals, interests, and skill level. We consider all of these things and then make a placement accordingly. Therefore, we don’t have specific internships “set aside” waiting for people to fill them. We have placed interns in both small and large companies, but due to confidentiality of our host companies and organizations we are not able to provide a list of companies.

If I am accepted into the program, am I guaranteed an internship?

We are confident in our ability to find impactful,  skill-building internships. If you are accepted into our program, we guarantee that we will find you a placement in your first or second choice field.

Do I need to have experience?

We arrange rewarding internship placements for people with all levels of experience. Whether you’re a complete beginner or an expert in your field, a successful experience requires a positive approach and a mind open to learning, growing and strengthening your skills.

Are the internships paid?

We really wish we could offer paid internships, but all of the internships we coordinate are unpaid placements. Paid internships abroad are few and far-between, as they require a different type of visa that is difficult to attain, and they also require sponsorship by the host company, which is quite costly for them. The goal of our program is to provide meaningful, hands-on experience in your specific profession or field of study that will give you a competitive edge in the job market and make you valuable to employers who are globally minded. If you are seeking a placement to help you gain international experience, improve your skills in your field and enhance your resume, our program provides the perfect opportunity.

What companies do you work with?

Is there a cost to particiate.

We strive to provide immersive, life changing, and professionally rewarding programs for our interns. Our programs are designed as a comprehensive “program” instead of just the internship so that we can provide a full experience for our participants. The program fees we charge include the in-country expenses (housing, insurance, orientation, etc.) and also the dedicated work that goes behind finding a customized, one-of-a-kind, international internship placement.

Internships in Moscow, Russia

Having been at the center of Russian history for centuries, Moscow remains to this day one of the most important cities in the world. Russia’s capital is home to over 12 million people and is a major global city with great international influence in trade, politics, and culture. If you are looking to intern abroad in Russia in a place that is all at once historically fascinating, architecturally beautiful, and a focal point in global business, then look no further than internships in Moscow.

Moscow has one of the largest economies of any city in the world, so interns will have no trouble finding internships in Moscow in a wide variety of professional fields. Many multinational companies and organizations have branches or offices in Moscow, and there are plenty of domestic internship opportunities as well.

The city’s most booming industries include finance , energy , technology , and production of raw materials . Your opportunities for internships in Moscow are by no means limited to these sectors though, there is a little bit of something for everyone in Moscow!

Many internship opportunities in Moscow will include the additional opportunity to enroll in Russian language courses. Though internships in Moscow can be both in English and Russian, making an effort to learn the language while living in Russia will make your life a whole lot easier. Russian is also one of the most sought-after languages in the world among numerous employers, therefore learning the language will be improving your future job prospects too.

Most internships in Moscow last between two and six months, depending on if you are a graduate or still a student. If you are still pursuing your degree, then there are some internship programs that offer the opportunity to earn academic credit in a variety of subjects through your placement.

Moscow is the largest city in Europe, so those who intern abroad in Moscow will certainly have their hands full taking in all there is to offer. From the Kremlin to St. Basil’s Cathedral to Ostankino Tower (the tallest structure in Europe), be prepared to explore a giant metropolis, where everyday the old comes up against the new. While living and interning in Moscow will undoubtedly come with its fair share of culture shock, you will leave your internship enamored with the city’s vitality.

Moscow’s metropolitan area is serviced by the largest metro system in Europe, boasting nearly 200 stops around the cityscape, so you will have no problem getting around town. Moscow also is a major international transportation hub, connecting the continents of Europe and Asia, and serving as the westernmost stop of the infamous Trans-Siberian railway, which spans the continent.

Culturally, Moscow is a tremendous display of the Russian national character. The food, architecture, museums, people, everything about interning abroad in Moscow will provide interns with an authentic experience of one of the world’s oldest and greatest societies. Throughout its history, Moscow has always been a leading force in politics, thought, and social movements for Russia, and the city continues to carry forth this prestige today.

Internships in Moscow can be either paid or unpaid, depending on what industry you decide to intern in. If your internship in Moscow is unpaid, employers will often compensate you in other ways, such as by providing meals, transportation, and/or housing.

Be warned in advance: Moscow is one of the most expensive cities in the world to live in for foreigners. While the city may be home to more billionaires than any other city in the world, most common folk pay the price for living in such a globally important metropolis. As an intern abroad in Moscow you will want to plan a careful budget for the duration of your internship, while taking advantage of the city’s many free attractions and entertainments too.

Most interns either live with a host family or in an apartment with peers or colleagues, depending on what is offered by your internship provider or employer. Rent can be very expensive in Moscow, especially close to the city center, so if a homestay is an option then definitely consider it! For language learners, homestays are a great way to get some extra practice conversing with your host family as well.

Russia’s visa policy can be quite strict, but is becoming more open in recent years. Your internship provider should be able to help you organize a visa, but it is a good idea to take initiative and get started on the visa process early. For more details on Russia’s visa policy toward your specific home nation, you can check out GoAbroad’s Embassy Directory .

Competitive Experience. Moscow is a unique and very impressive location for an internship abroad, especially in the eyes of future employers. As a major center of global business, it will look great on your resume having practical work experience through an internship in Moscow.

Learn Russian. Russian is one of six official language used by the United Nations, making it very useful for future job prospects in the international arena. Whatever profession you are pursuing, learning Russian while interning in Moscow will be a big boost to your resume and career.

Rich History. Russia is one of the most continuously fascinating countries in the world, from the days of the Russian Empire through the October Revolution to its position today as a world superpower. Living and interning in Moscow will put you at the center of it all.

Tourism Internships in the US

Study Tourism at Florida International University - Global

There are many opportunities for international students interested in tourism internships in the U.S. Both the tourism and hospitality industries make up a large portion of the US economy and provide an abundance of internship options. Some examples of tourism and hospitality internships in the U.S. are operation management, event planning, tourism development, marketing, and customer service.

The requirements are similar for most tourism internships in the U.S.; non-US students must have a Grade Point Average (GPA) above 2.0 at their college or university. Also international students must be working towards either a Master's or Bachelor's degree at a college or university and be between the ages of 18 and 26. Students can either be a freshman, sophomore, junior, senior, a recent graduate, or are working on graduate studies. Also, to participate in hospitality internships in the U.S., individuals may need to have proficient English speaking skills.

Some US-based companies that help students find internships are Dream Careers, GlobalExperiences.com, and GlobalChoices.co.uk. It may be a good decision to use placement services like these because they can help international students with visa issues, situate students in specific locations and give them a particular type of internship they may be looking for. Many placement companies guarantee internship placement and are rated by the Better Business Bureau.

The work permit and visa process can be complicated for international students. International students enrolled in a degree program at an American college or university will typically have an F1 visa. Under this visa, international students can apply for Curricular Practical Training (CPT) or Optional Practical Training (OPT) status as long as the internship is considered part of their area of study. Once an international student is accepted into an internship program, he or she should go to the international student office at their school and fill out the necessary forms (check the timeline as sometimes it may take a few months to be approved). Once a student is approved, their I-20 form will specify that they are able to participate in the CPT or OPT.

Exchange students or scholars can also come to the US on a J-1 visa. Usually it is the internship program that will sponsor this type of visa for their internship. Students who have a J-1 visa will be required to leave the States within 30 days of completion of their internship and will not be permitted to re-enter the USA for 2 years. The reason for this is because students are expected to take the knowledge and skills they gained during their training and use them in their native countries.

The H-2 visa is also another option for students interested in hospitality internships in the U.S. This is a more short-term visa and is usually used during summer internship programs. These internships however, are for gaining a more general work experience in the hospitality industry. An individual with an H-2 visa commonly works or interns as front desk agents, servers, ski-instructors, housekeepers, etc. Students who wish to have a more administrative internship experience such as working within the corporate offices of a resort chain may need a J-1 or F1 visa to do so.

The hospitality and tourism industries are major parts of the U.S. economy. For this reason many international students choose to come to the US to pursue an education and gain internship experience in these fields. Students can acquire the proper visas and permits to participate in these internships though their universities, colleges, or internship programs.

In this article

Almost a quarter of students in hospitality take an internship, but why? For a start, tourism internships offer invaluable opportunities to acquire hands-on practice, industry knowledge and professional networks that can significantly improve your career prospects. Due to the competitive nature of the tourism industry, gaining a foothold often requires more than just academic credentials, so the kind of practical experience an internship gives can genuinely set you apart from the crowd.

This article explores the numerous benefits of tourism internships, illustrating how they can be a stepping stone to a successful and fulfilling career. Whether you’re an aspiring student or a recent graduate, discover how internships can provide the skills and insights needed to thrive in this exciting, sought-after sector.

Different types of tourism internships available

Tourist work experience comes in all shapes and sizes, each being unique opportunities to gain practical insights into the industry. Understanding what’s available can help you choose the path that best aligns with your career goals and interests. Some common types of internships include:

  • Hotel and resort: provide exposure to various departments such as front desk operations, housekeeping, food and beverage services and guest relations. This type of internship is ideal for gaining a comprehensive understanding of hospitality management and the day-to-day operations of a hotel or resort
  • Travel agency: learn about travel planning, customer service and sales. Interns assist in creating itineraries, booking accommodation, transportation and handling client inquiries, perfect for those interested in becoming travel consultants or agents
  • Tour operator: planning and organizing tours, working with local guides and ensuring a seamless experience for tourists. The role offers insights into the logistics of tour management and the opportunity to develop strong organizational and communication skills
  • Destination management company: promoting and managing tourism to a specific location. Interns may work on marketing campaigns, event planning or partnership development with local businesses
  • Event planning: organizing events such as conferences, weddings and festivals. Interns gain experience in project management, vendor coordination and client relations
  • Cruise line: a unique opportunity to work on board a tourist ship, gaining experience in guest services, entertainment and hospitality and exposure to a varied and multicultural work environment

  • Cultural and heritage tourism: working with museums and other institutions to help create educational programs, conduct tours and promote cultural heritage
  • Adventure tourism: working with companies offering activities such as trekking, scuba diving and wildlife safaris. Interns assist in planning and leading adventure tours, ensuring safety and improving the guest experience

Internships in hospitality degrees

Hospitality schools aim to give students first-hand exposure to the reality of the industry through work placements, preparing them for successful careers after graduation. Most are scheduled during the latter part of the degree program , while others are during the first year to help students gain industry exposure. Internships allow students to apply theoretical knowledge in practical scenarios, develop essential skills such as customer service and event management and build professional networks in the industry.

By gaining valuable industry experience and understanding operational challenges, students boost their employability and gain insights into various hospitality career paths, helping them find the role that suits them best. Faculty often supervise these internships to ensure they align with academic objectives and provide sufficient educational credit towards the degree program.

Boost your hospitality career prospects

Benefits of pursuing an internship in the tourism industry

Structured work experience offers numerous advantages that can significantly improve your career prospects. We’ll discuss some of the main reasons to consider undertaking an internship or placement below.

Gaining practical experience and skills

Working in real-world settings allows you to develop the practical skills you need for the tourism industry. Internships are essential for developing a wide range of soft skills too that are also crucial for success in the hospitality industry, such as:

  • Customer service skills: direct interaction with guests allows you to improve your ability to provide excellent service, handle complaints and ensure guest satisfaction
  • Effective communication skills : working in a professional environment improves your ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, superiors and customers
  • Problem-solving skills: internships often present unexpected challenges that require quick thinking to find effective solutions
  • Technical skills: you will become familiar with industry-specific software and technology
  • Time management: handling multiple different tasks at once and making sure everything is done on time

Networking and professional development

Interacting with industry professionals, from front-line staff to senior managers, and gaining insights and advice that can guide your career in hospitality. Building these relationships can lead to mentorship opportunities, job referrals and valuable industry connections. Many companies prefer to hire from within their pool of interns, providing a direct pathway to full-time employment. Engaging in professional development activities, such as attending industry conferences and workshops, further improves your knowledge and visibility in the sector.

Understanding global cultural diversity

The tourism industry is inherently multicultural and internships will frequently expose you to diverse cultures and practices. Whether you’re working in a local hotel or an international travel agency, you’ll interact with guests and colleagues from various backgrounds. Learning to appreciate and adapt to different cultural norms and expectations makes you a better professional, improves your career prospects and enriches your personal life.

Real-world application of academic knowledge

Internships provide a valuable opportunity to apply the theoretical knowledge gained in the classroom to real-world scenarios. This helps bridge the gap between academic concepts and their practical use, while deepening your understanding of the hospitality industry. You gain experience in business operations, making decisions and applying theoretical principles in day-to-day operations.

Better employability

Having internship experience on your resumé significantly boosts your chance of getting a job. Employers in the hospitality industry value practical experience highly and candidates who have completed internships are often seen as more prepared and capable. It also demonstrates your commitment to the industry.

Career exploration

Internships offer a unique opportunity to experience different areas in the tourism industry. Whether you’re interested in tourism, hotel management event planning or food and beverage services, internships allow you to try out various hospitality career roles and determine which area suits you best. This can help you decide your career path after graduation.

Increased confidence

Successfully navigating the challenges of an internship can boost your self-confidence and prepare you for the demands of a full-time position in the hospitality industry. This can improve your performance and future roles and contribute to your overall career success.

How to find the right tourism internship for you

Landing the perfect internship requires a clear understanding of your career goals and interests, coupled with thorough research. Below is a handy guide to help you navigate this process.

Identifying your career goals and interests

Start by defining your job aspirations and areas that appeal to you about the tourism industry. Consider the following questions:

  • What are your long-term career goals?
  • Which areas of tourism excite you the most?
  • What skills do you want to develop?

By answering these, you can focus your search on internships that will provide relevant experience and help you achieve your professional objectives.

Researching and selecting destinations

Once you clearly understand your goals and interests, it’s time to research potential locations for your internship by:

  • Exploring different places: the vast tourism industry has many international internship opportunities. Decide whether you would prefer to stay local, explore a different country or work in a specific type of environment, such as urban, rural or coastal settings
  • Researching organizations: look into various companies, hotels, resorts, travel agencies and tour operators that offer internships. Read reviews, visit their websites and check their internship programs to understand what they offer and what their work culture is like
  • Using internship platforms: websites such as Indeed, LinkedIn and specialized tourism job boards can be valuable resources for finding internship listings. You an also try talking to your school’s career advisors
  • Attending career fairs and networking events: participate in industry-related events to meet employers and learn about potential internship opportunities
  • Considering the logistics: such as visa requirements, accommodation options, cost of living and language barriers. Make sure the destination you choose is feasible

Tourism internships offer invaluable opportunities for students and recent graduates to kickstart their careers in the competitive tourism industry. By providing hands-on experience, professional skills and networking opportunities, internships bridge the gap between academic learning and professional practice.

The practical insights gained through internships boost employability and help individuals discover their strengths and interests in the tourism sector. Aspiring professionals who embark on tourism internships gain a competitive edge in the job market and lay a solid foundation for a successful and fulfilling career.
