Tennis is a year-round activity, but the sport really shines when the weather is nice. And now, with Challengers starring Zendaya in theaters, there's a new legion of tennis fans. If you've been inspired by Zendaya's tenniscore press tour for the film (or perhaps you just want the "I TOLD YA" t-shirt ), it's time to pull on your tennis whites and hit the court. But, if you're merely a fan of the sport without the athletic proclivities for it, consider diving in to a book about tennis to get you in the summertime mood. Be it a memoir, history book, or really juicy novel, tennis books deliver the heart-pounding drama of a fantastic match. Here, 20 of our picks for the best tennis books to read right now:

Carrie Soto Is Back: A Novel

Carrie Soto Is Back: A Novel

Are you a tennis fan who is also obsessed with Daisy Jones and the Six ? (Hello, same.) Then you should not miss Carrie Soto Is Back , written by Daisy Jones author Taylor Jenkins Reid about an all-star tennis player who decides to come out of retirement for one last season. And even if you're not a tennis fan, Reid made sure to note in an interview , "this is a book you can read even if you’ve never watched a day of tennis in your life."

Racquet: The Book

Racquet: The Book

The best tennis writing these days is coming by way of Racquet , a quarterly magazine "that celebrates the art, ideas, style and culture that surround tennis." To mark the first three years of the magazine, they released a collection featuring some of the best essays, including Taffy Brodesser-Akner on tennis's elitism and Giri Nathan on David Ferrer. It's a must-read for all tennis fans (and then go subscribe to the magazine).

The Tennis Partner

The Tennis Partner

Abraham Verghese, who is perhaps best known for his bestselling novel Cutting for Stone and the new critically acclaimed book The Covenant of Water , wrote a deeply moving autobiographical novel about tennis. Yes, tennis. In it, Verghese, a physician, takes a new job on the faculty of Texas Tech in El Paso, where he meets David, a former tennis pro, recovering drug addict, and one of Verghese's med students. Soon, the two begin playing, and their friendship is shaped by the court. But when David relapses, Verghese must navigate their relationship and his role as an authority figure.

41-Love: A Memoir

41-Love: A Memoir

This unconventional sports memoir features writer Scarlett Thomas deciding to take up tennis at the age of 41. Soon, she finds herself addicted to the competition of the sport, and she worries about how tennis is impacting her mental health. "I sort of had the idea just after I’d won my first and only tennis tournament, and the idea of writing was basically the excuse to continue playing tennis," Thomas told the New York Times of the inspiration for 41-Love . "How can I spend a lot of time and money on this hobby? I’ll do that thing that people do; they do something for a year and write a book about it. They always start off like they’re not sure they can do it, and then they try it and it goes badly, and then they end up a winner. I wanted that narrative for myself." Spoiler: She does not get that narrative.

The Master: The Long Run and Beautiful Game of Roger Federer

The Master: The Long Run and Beautiful Game of Roger Federer

When Roger Federer retired in fall 2022, the men's tennis tour lost one of its "Big Three" (the other two, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, are still competing). In this meticulously researched biography, with huge access to Federer and his team, New York Times tennis correspondent Christopher Clarey tells the remarkable story of Federer's life and career.

Open: An Autobiography

Open: An Autobiography

Andre Agassi's Open is the tennis memoir. Ghostwritten by J.R. Moehringer , who has been in the news this year for his work on Prince Harry's memoir, Spare , Open is a tennis story, yes, but also a tragic story of addiction, insecurities, and fame. At the time of publication in 2009, Agassi said , "I knew in the book I had to expose everything. I think the reader can tell when you’re holding back, and I also wanted to see my own narrative come into focus. The truth is always surprising."

Sudden Death: A Novel

Sudden Death: A Novel

This mesmerizing novel by Mexican author Álvaro Enrigue (translated Natasha Wimmer) centers on a 16th-century tennis match between the radical Italian artist Caravaggio and the Spanish poet Francisco de Quevedo, using a ball made from the hair of the beheaded Anne Boleyn. "I don’t know what this book is about," Enrigue writes at one point in Sudden Death . "It’s not exactly about a tennis match. Nor is it a book about the slow and mysterious integration of America into what we call 'the Western world' — an outrageous misapprehension, since from the American perspective, Europe is the East. Maybe it’s just a book about how to write this book; maybe that’s what all books are about." One thing is for sure: his book is a postmodern delight.

Althea: The Life of Tennis Champion Althea Gibson

Althea: The Life of Tennis Champion Althea Gibson

Sally Jacobs tells the story of tennis trailblazer Althea Gibson in this remarkable biography. Gibson was the first Black player to win a Grand Slam title (she would go on to win 11), and she would pave the way for generations of players, like Serena Williams and Sloane Stephens . Also, after she retired from tennis, she became the first Black player on the Women's Professional Golf Tour. No big deal. (Read an excerpt here, on when Althea Gibson met Queen Elizabeth .)

String Theory: David Foster Wallace on Tennis: A Library of America Special Publication

String Theory: David Foster Wallace on Tennis: A Library of America Special Publication

No tennis book list is complete without David Foster Wallace. As he famously wrote, "I submit that tennis is the most beautiful sport there is, and also the most demanding." This five-essay collection features his best writing on the sport, including one piece on Roger Federer, one on Tracy Austin, and one on the US Open in 1995.

Seeing Serena

Seeing Serena

Serena Williams is the undisputed Greatest of All Time in tennis. Though she retired last year , her impact on the sport will be felt for generations to come. Gerald Mazorati's biography focuses in on two years of her career: her return to the sport after nearly dying giving birth to her daughter, through the 2020 season that took place on the backdrop of the pandemic and the Black Lives Matter protests. "It is Serena Williams’s complexity, even beyond her greatness on court, that has made her the most consequential athlete of her time, and it is my hope that this book, in its way of telling, evokes and somehow deepens that complexity," Mazorati writes.

A Terrible Splendor: Three Extraordinary Men, a World Poised for War, and the Greatest Tennis Match Ever Played

A Terrible Splendor: Three Extraordinary Men, a World Poised for War, and the Greatest Tennis Match Ever Played

"Before Federer versus Nadal, before Borg versus McEnroe, the greatest tennis match ever played pitted the dominant Don Budge against the seductively handsome Baron Gottfried von Cramm..." I mean, from that tease from the publisher alone, don't you want to read A Terrible Splendor ? This history book details a 1937 Davis Cup five set match at Wimbledon between an American and a German . Marshall Jon Fisher expertly weaves the match with their careers and the backdrop of the imminent world war.

Arthur Ashe: A Life

Arthur Ashe: A Life

Raymound Arsenault’s definitive biography of Arthur Ashe clocks in at 629 pages—an exhaustive look at the tennis champion's life, politics, and legacy. If you've ever watched the US Open but don't know the story behind the Arthur Ashe Stadium, do yourself a favor and dive into this book. It's worth your time.

Apples Never Fall

Apples Never Fall

Liane Moriarty's gripping Apples Never Fall is the story of the four Delaney siblings, who don't know what to do when their mom, Joy, goes missing and they suspect their father, Stan, of having something to do with it. Their parents are longtime fixtures in the community—running a famous tennis academy—which makes the mystery even more twisty. Plus: It's now a Peacock series, starring Annette Bening, Sam Neill, Jake Lacy , Alison Brie, and more.

A Weekend in New York

A Weekend in New York

In Benjamin Markovits's A Weekend in New York, Paul Essinger, a mid-ranking tennis professional on the ATP tour, is competing in the U.S. Open, and his family has come to New York to watch him. "The family itself is the central character, a single, complicated organism," the New York Times noted in their review . "There’s not a lot of high drama in the novel; the characters’ cool and sometimes startling insights into their own behavior are pleasure enough."

Winning Ugly: Mental Warfare in Tennis--Lessons from a Master

Winning Ugly: Mental Warfare in Tennis--Lessons from a Master

If you're looking more for a tennis guide, you can't go wrong with Brad Gilbert's Winning Ugly . Gilbert, who has coached Andre Agassi and now coaches Coco Gauff , offers his tips and tricks for succeeding in the sport. Bonus: He served as a consultant for Challengers , teaching Zendaya how to play, and makes a fun cameo as Art's coach in the film.

The Divine Miss Marble: A Life of Tennis, Fame, and Mystery

The Divine Miss Marble: A Life of Tennis, Fame, and Mystery

In Robert Weintraub's The Divine Miss Marble , he dives into the life and mystery surrounding 1930s tennis star Alice Marble . Alice won 18 Grand Slams during her career (five singles titles), and was a former world no. 1. She also was an editor of the Wonder Woman comic, taught Billie Jean King, and was allegedly a spy during World War II. This book tries to get to the bottom of her story. (You can also check out her memoir, Courting Danger , which was republished in 2020.)

The Only Story: A novel

The Only Story: A novel

When Susan, 48 and married with kids, and Paul, 19 and home from universiry, are matched as doubles partners at their tennis club in a small town in England, they soon begin an affair. Decades later, Paul looks back on their story and what happened between them.

40 Love: A Novel

40 Love: A Novel

In 40 Love (originally published as The Tennis Party ) , four social-climbing British couples gather for a friendly weekend of tennis. What results is a comedy of manners featuring betrayal, scandal, secrets, and a healthy (or unhealthy) dose of competition. You may know author Madeleine Wickham from her Shopaholic series (under pseudonym Sophie Kinsella), and this 1995 novel is her debut (it was republished in 2011). It's a downright blast.

A Necessary Spectacle: Billie Jean King, Bobby Riggs, and the Tennis Match That Leveled the Game

A Necessary Spectacle: Billie Jean King, Bobby Riggs, and the Tennis Match That Leveled the Game

This fall marks the 50th anniversary of the Battle of the Sexes , a 1973 match between Bobby Riggs and Billie Jean King that was one of the most-watched sporting events of all time. (It was later dramatized in a film starring Emma Stone and Steve Carell as King and Riggs.) Selena Roberts, New York Times sports columnist, documents how not just the Battle of the Sexes itself, but how the spectacle changed sports for women, focusing in on the Title IX movement.

All In: An Autobiography

All In: An Autobiography

And while we're thinking about 50th anniversary of the Battle of the Sexes, and the state of women's tennis in general, Billie Jean King's autobiography All In is a necessary read. Written with with Johnette Howard and Maryanne Vollers, King details her childhood, career, and her journey into feminist activism. As the New York Times notes in its review, "it’s hard not to read this book as a call to arms."

THE NO. 1 BESTSELLER 'Well worth a read if you want the inside track on life on the lower rungs of the tennis circuit. Warts and all.' Judy Murray ' A s elegant and powerful as a Federer backhand ... It’s Kitchen Confidential for tennis.' Ed Caesar 'A really wonderful read ... Conor Niland has delivered an all-timer for tennis and sports journalism' Ashlee Vance 'Conor Niland may only have managed a career-high ranking of 129 – only ? that is some achievement in itself! – but The Racket, his account of how he managed this, is up there with the best half-dozen books on tennis ever written.' Geoff Dyer ‘Genuinely such a brilliant book, a brilliant read’ Ciarán Murphy, Second Captains Podcast ‘One of the best Irish sports books of the last decade’ Kieran Shannon, Irish Examiner 'If it's not a contender for Sports Book of the Year, the world has gone mad.' Fionn Davenport, Off The Ball ---- When Conor Niland was 16, he got the chance to hit with Serena Williams at Nick Bollettieri's famed tennis academy. Conor, the Irish junior number one, was feeling a bit homesick. Serena, also 16, already owned her own house beside the academy. Conor Niland knows what it's like when Roger Federer walks into the dressing room ( 'Ciao, bonjour, hello!' ), and he has had the exquisitely terrible experience of facing Novak Djokovic in the world's biggest tennis stadium - while suffering from food poisoning. But he never reached the very top. The Racket is the story of pro tennis's 99%: the players who roam the globe in hope of climbing the rankings and squeaking into the Grand Slam tournaments. It brings us into a world where a few dozen super-rich players - travelling with coaches and physios - share a stage with lonely touring pros whose earnings barely cover their expenses. Painting a vivid picture of the social dynamics on tour, the economics of the game, and the shadows cast by gambling and doping, The Racket is a witty and revealing underdog's memoir and a unique look inside a fascinating hidden world. ---- 'Blending a passion for his chosen sport with a realistic study of the traumas of the tour, The Racket offers a brilliant insight from Ireland’s greatest ever tennis player.’ John Boyne 'This will rightly join the list of The Best Irish Sports Books Ever Written. A superb insight into professional tennis from the ground up' Paul Howard 'I ate this book up ... reveals the sacrifices, commitment and decidedly unglamorous side of life on the tennis circuit' Sinead Moriarty ‘Unsparing in his depiction of the drudgery of tennis’ Mike Jakeman, The Spectator ‘Compelling’ Tennis365.com 'Brilliant book, I inhaled it' Jonathan Drennan, Sydney Morning Herald 'Devoured it in a day ... I've read many tennis autobiographies: this is one of the very best' Charles Arthur, Journalist 'Sure to become a must read of the tennis literature canon' Paul Perry, author and academic ‘Witty and insightful … an homage to the game he clearly still loves’ Anna Carey, Irish Times ‘Honest and droll"’ Laura Slattery, Irish Times 'A brilliant, unvarnished look at a brutal sporting life.' Michael Foley, The Sunday Times ' His funny, sometimes painful, memoir, is a brilliant insider's look at the brutally competitive world of tennis as well as a meditation on moments missed by inches.' Sunday Independent ' A crushing reminder of the grist from which sporting greatness emerges' The Economist ‘A visceral, melancholy and often self-lacerating book … History is usually written by the winners, but this intelligent, unvarnished, emotionally draining memoir shows why an also-ran’s perspective can be just as valuable’ Andrew Lynch, The Business Post 'A brutally honest assessment of his career and the effort it took to take him to the margins of the world’s elite.' Tom Lyons, The Currency ‘An excellent book’ Denis Hurley, Irish Farmers Journal ' A searingly honest account of the real world of tennis’ Irish Country Living

The book was a revelation from start to finish. Tennis is one of my favourite sports and always thought it would be one I would have liked to have taken up as on a professional basis. Very difficult to avoid doing if you have been pushed by one's parents from an early age. After having read the book it puts a completely different complexion on the sport. It was an agonizing and extremely compulsive read experiencing the ups but mainly downs the author had to struggle through during his tennis life. Definitely an eye opener of a book and one I would highly recommend to be read

A searingly honest account of the life of an Irish tennis pro trying to make it big. Niland's humility and self-deprecatory humour are to the fore in this delightful memoir. I loved the anecdotes, especially those about his father, which were touching. The little references to literature scattered throughout are a pleasant surprise. Beautifully written, admittedly ghost-written, but I hear from those that know him that the former tennis pro's voice rings loudly true throughout.

While Wimbledon rambles on, a new tennis book has caught my attention. It’s by former ATP journeyman Conor Niland, from Ireland, titled The Racket: On Tour with Tennis’s Golden Generation And The Other 99 Percent.

Obviously it’s a profound perspective of pro tennis from the lens of a player who competed for a decade but only managed to make it to two Grand Slams. Niland is a talented writer and reveals the interesting social dynamics between the high and mighty players and the majority of strugglers and grinders. In other words, he takes you behind closed doors of the professional tennis world and writes about topics and interactions, the tennis media never does.

The reviews are excellent…

A very enjoyable read, this paints a pretty grim picture of the sweat and toil of a mid-level pro player, picking up loss after loss after loss from Chile to Banja Luka to Siberia but it’s told in a charming voice and provides insight into the mentality of a pro-athlete. It has very many funny and moving moments, I laughed out loud 4 times, it’s an easy read which is honest and entertaining.

I normally loathe sports books, biographies included. They are turgid, ‘and then’ accounts with, possibly, a minor item thrown in to generate a few headlines and ignite ‘controversy’. When a sports book is good however, it can be great. This one IS great, to my mind. I do love tennis, and played it for many years. I have also been at many ATP tour events. But I don’t think a reader would need a tennis background to love this book. It chronicles in painful detail the highs and (mostly) lows of a hard-working, grafting, tennis professional who aims for the big time and falls agonisingly short. It’s well written, it’s gripping, he’s very honest about his own failings and where things went wrong. And, occasionally, when the stars aligned and things worked out. I loved it. Five stars.

A fascinating window into life on tour for “the other 99%” whose ceiling ended up being outside of the Top 100.

I really enjoyed Niland’s insights into the American college circuit and the chaotic, globetrotting existence that goes hand in hand with playing Challengers and Futures events in the hopes of gaining those all-important ranking points.

I also appreciated Niland’s matter-of-fact portrayal of the less glamorous aspects of professional tennis, from the gruelling, relentless grind necessary to even crack the Top 300 (especially if your national tennis federation does little to support you), to the match fixing, doping and hate-mail from angry bettors that sometimes happens in the background at these events.

It is quite fitting that I finished this book on the day Andy Murray retired from what was likely his last match at Queen’s, where he is the 5-time champion. Niland’s account of the kindness he and his mother Judy showed him multiple times throughout his career only served to consolidate my belief that he’s a stand-up guy (it also tickles me to know that Dimitrov was obsessed with watches even as a teen!).

I do vaguely remember the buzz at home that we had an Irishman playing at Wimbledon (meaning no offence to Niland – I was a teen at the time with a very old TV that had unreliable signal for BBC!), so it was very interesting to get an account of the Mannarino match from his point of view.

Ultimately, while I always knew the sport was ruthless and that Trojan amounts of work and tenacity is essential to even get by as a pro, this book has given me a newfound appreciation for what players go through to make even the smallest gain. I will be looking at unfamiliar names duking it out in Slam qualies with nothing but awe and the utmost respect and am really glad that Niland took the time to provide this fresh, underrepresented perspective.

I have not got my copy yet but can’t wait to read this excellent book on a subject all of the media rarely focuses on.

Most of the readable tennis books and tennis writing seem to be about players who don’t make it.

I suppose those who do make it don’t have the time and/or depend on ghosts.

‘Open’ was an exception but I’ve never rated it as highly as some.

From another, more pastoral, time ‘A Handful of Summers’ is still my favourite.

Catherine, Open was superb because Agassi told the truth, he didn’t write a fairy tale PR story, he kept it totally real, the good the bad and the ugly. We know it tennis there is a dark side, most players don’t make it big. They are more relatable, they’ve seen it all, done it all, except winning those lottery grand slam finals.

Scoop, thanks for the article – purchased the book and looking forward to reading it while in Newport next week for the last year of the 250 Hall of Fame Open.

Break Point was a great book which detailed one year as Vince Spadea was on tour, authored by Dan Markowitz.

Great read and Vince in my opinion was both an extremely talented and fun player to watch but at one point in his tennis career a “journeyman”

Scoop look forward to hitting next week – maybe this is the year i take 1 game to 10 against you????

Scoop Malinowski · July 10, 2024 at 8:41 am

Thrilled about this book also, yes Vince was called a journeyman by Agassi which inspired Vince to some of his best results. Yes we will hit, you should have whupped me last time )

About This Guide

If you’re just getting into tennis or you’ve been playing for years, I believe there’s a book out there for just about everyone.

At TennisCompanion, I’ve read more books than I can count. Unfortunately, finding tennis books was never all that easy, and finding a good book was even harder.

Over the years, I’ve kept a list of my favorite books, but I wanted to take that list a step further, so I’ve come up with a comprehensive list that includes my favorites, as well as other books, members in the community have read and loved.

As you’re scrolling, you’ll find individual books tagged with “TC.” These are some of my all-time favorites.

I hope you enjoy my list, and if you have any that you think I missed, I’d love for you to share in the comments at the bottom.

In tennis or any sport, understanding the rules of the game is fundamentally important to ensure you’re playing accurately and fairly. For many players, the rules of tennis are learned slowly over time through tennis lessons, practice, and competition.

However, in my experience, few players take the time to thoroughly read the rule books, which can put you at a disadvantage, particularly in competition. After all, if you don’t know how to handle a specific scenario, you may give up a point unnecessarily.

For example, if your hat falls out of bounds during a point, and your opponent’s shot hits your hat, who wins the point? I guess you’ll have to do some reading to find out.

In this section, I cover a wide range of rulebooks per the different governing bodies in tennis, including the USTA, ITF, ATP, WTA, and ITA. If you haven’t had the opportunity to read through the most relevant rulebook for you, I’d highly suggest you do it at some point.

If you love the sport, you’ll most likely enjoy learning all the nuances and technicalities, and you’ll be a better tennis player for it.

With ancient forms of the game dating back thousands of years, tennis has a rich and storied history that has been captured thoughtfully by only a handful of books.

As an avid tennis player, I have a great appreciation for our sport, and these books have provided me with meaningful opportunities to expand my knowledge and enjoyment of the game.

Whether you’re new to the game or have been playing for years, the following books are invaluable resources for learning more about the origins of our sport and for providing detailed accounts of more recent years in tennis. They also make great gifts for bringing younger players up-to-speed on past years and players who have played the sport before them, some of which you’ll find referenced by commentators.

Last but not least, this section also serves up excellent coffee table books for striking up a conversation. Even the casual tennis fan can enjoy pouring over these types of books for a few moments, while the tennis fanatic will have a hard time putting them down.

Books about tennis players are easily the best-selling of any category I include in this guide, including a robust selection of memoirs, autobiographies, biographies

As a fan, I can’t help but want to learn more about some of the most celebrated players in our sport, and a memoir, autobiography, or biography will provide the most exceptional insight.

From Andre Agassi’s hugely popular “Open” to Jame Blake’s remarkable story “Breaking Back” and classics like Arthur Ashe’s “Days of Grace,” there are plenty of classics to consider.

Each book provides detailed accounts of the lives and experiences the most famous tennis athletes ever to step foot on a court. If you’re looking for an entertaining tennis book, then this section is for you.

If you’re new to the sport and looking for some books on how to play tennis and the fundamentals, then this section is for you. As a beginner, these books will help provide you with the necessary foundation to be successful in tennis.

From scoring to equipment, strokes, how to improve your game, and just about everything in between, these books are the perfect starting point for beginners or players looking for a refresher on the fundamentals.

I also believe these books have the potential to help flatten the learning curve for new players, which can be quite steep and, therefore, discouraging.

Often, the first place new players will turn is private or group lessons when they’re first starting to learn how to play tennis. While lessons are a fantastic way to get started, there is only so much an instructor can cover in an hour, so these books provide a great way to fill in the gaps and accelerate how quickly you learn the game.

What better way to introduce kids to the sport of tennis than through a bedtime story?

If you love tennis and you have kids, there are a handful of great fiction books that cater to different ages of children from babies, to toddlers, preschoolers, and young children, while also appealing to the adults that help read them.

These books for kids are a fantastic addition to any child’s collection of bedtime stories and also make terrific companions for vacations or gifts for friends and family.

If you’re looking to improve your game and take things to the next level, then this section of strategy and tactic books is for you.

When first learning the game, there’s no substitute for stroke development and technique – it’s fundamental to achieving success on the court. However, players stand to gain higher levels of success if they learn to treat their matches like a chess match.

In other words, tennis is as much a game of strategy as it is a physical battle between two opponents. More often than not, lessons and clinics, where the focus tends to skew toward the fundamentals, do not include the strategic end of tennis and the specific tactics players can use to win more matches.

I’ve found that books about tennis strategy are eye-opening to intermediate and advanced players. If you’re feeling comfortable with your strokes, but you don’t have a game plan when you step out on the court, then it’s likely you’d benefit from a book on tennis strategy.

As any top player will tell you, tennis is just as much a mental game as it is physical.

Have you ever started a match where you’re on fire in the first set, only to tank things in the second and third? How about getting frustrated at a poor line call by an opponent, double-faulting on game point, or stepping out on the court some days, and you can’t seem to find your rhythm.

If you’ve played tennis for any length of time, you’ve likely experienced first hand how a poor mindset has the potential to derail a match completely and, unfortunately, make tennis significantly less enjoyable – after all, it’s just a game, right?

Unfortunately, many players fail to recognize their game can benefit from an honest look at their mental and emotional state before, during, and after tennis matches, or they fail to realize there are resources and proven strategies available to them.

If you play competitive tennis with friends, at your local club, in high school, college, or even beyond, then I believe you’ll find a book on psychology, and the mental game of tennis, useful. These books will help you elevate your game and win more consistently.

If you’re a tennis coach, then having a collection of books that you can refer to for inspiration and advice can be incredibly useful.

If you’re looking to help one of your players out of a slump, need a new set of drills to improve your team or player’s strokes or guidance on how to train players, then this section of books is for you.

These coaching books are also great for parents who are working directly with their children on improving their game or existing players who are interested in coaching a team or becoming a tennis instructor.

Lastly, as a player, you may find these books incredibly insightful to understand what to look for in a coach or private instructor.

Tennis conditioning and fitness is easily the most overlooked part of our sport. As an incredibly technical sport, stroke development and technique are often at the forefront of player development. The mental side of tennis gets some attention too, but conditioning and fitness are often entirely ignored, and it’s a shame.

Unfortunately, for most players, talent will only take you so far. Tennis has become so competitive and physical that you need to be in excellent shape to go the distance and hang with top players.

Think about some of the game’s top players over the past decade. Names like Rafael Nadal, Serena Williams, Roger Federer, Simona Halep, Novak Djokovic, and Angelique Kerber are a few that come to mind, each with incredible physical prowess.

When Andy Murray finally took his conditioning seriously earlier in his career, it transformed his game, and it helped him last longer 3-5 set matches. It’s also a huge part of what’s helped him come back from many injuries, including his most recent hip surgery.

Conditioning and fitness enable your best strokes and ensure you can compete at the highest level throughout a match. Most players find that as they get tired, their game slowly diminishes. In turn, it’s harder to get their feet planted before a groundstroke, drop low for a volley, or maintain their form through their service motion, and in general, their game suffers. In turn, it becomes harder to maintain a positive mental frame of mind, which is crucial in tennis.

Whether you’re looking to gain a considerable edge over the competition, outlast tough opponents in longer matches or ensure that you maximize your talent, I’d highly recommend you check out these conditioning and fitness books. If not, at least work with a coach with a few copies, as there is no substitute for being match fit.

When competing as a younger player, particularly in high school and college, doubles can play a critical role in a team’s success and help buffer a singles lineup that doesn’t have as much depth.

If you ask us, it can be more fun too. Some of my best memories of playing tennis in college were doubles. It’s also popular at the club and recreational level.

On the pro tour, doubles teams like the Bryan brothers, Williams sisters, Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares, and Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Lucie Šafářová, have all enjoyed great success in doubles over the past decade. Not to mention the fact that it remains a crucial part of team tournaments like the Davis Cup, Fed Cup, and decided the winner at the inaugural 2020 ATP Cup.

However, many players and coaches don’t give doubles the credit it deserves, which is an entirely different playbook. Success in singles does not guarantee it in doubles, far from it. Luckily, I have this group of books to refer to that give doubles the attention it deserves and provides eager players looking to take it to the next level some excellent resources.

The following list is a selection of great books that didn’t quite find a home in my main categories above, but they’re worth including, so I wanted to make sure you still knew about them.

Have a suggestion?

What do you think about my list? I’d love to hear in the comments below.

I’d also love to hear about any books you think should be on my list in the comments so I can continue to improve it with new additions.

Break Point by Vincent Spadea. It was an interesting book. It had some gossip. I really enjoyed reading it. And it had some good insight about life on the pro tour.

Joe Guiney

I came here because I was trying to find out if Ilie Nastase’s novel, “Breakpoint,” was ghostwritten or what. I found it in one of those little free librarys, and I’m in the middle of reading it, and it is really quite good. If this wasn’t ghosted, Nastase has a hell of a command of the English language for a Romanian.

You should maybe add this book to your list. BTW, I have several of the titles on your list (The Inner Game, The Outsider, Fireside Book of Tennis, etc. I also have a couple books on building and maintaining clay courts –I used to be groundskeeper at a tennis club–) but a real corker I’ve got, that I’ll bet you’ve never heard of, is Mercer Beasley’s [he was Elsworth Vinese’s coach] book, “How To Play Tennis.” He maintained that the ‘bent-knee overhead’ was the shot of the future.

TennisCompanion

Hi Joe! Thanks for the suggestion, I’ll have to check out Break Point – looks like an interesting read. Haha, I definitely hadn’t come across that book from Beasley. I was able to find it online.

All the best, Jon

Clive Chat

Here’s another great tennis book for your list: a recently published novel called Chance to Break. It’s getting terrific reviews.

Thanks for the recommendation, Clive. Much appreciated.

Mary Nhin

How to Win Wimbledon in Pajamas is a mental toughness series book that teaches children about GRIT and how to be mentally tough! Check it out on amazon!

Hi Mary, thanks for sharing. It looks like a fun book that I’ll have to check out. I think it wins for best title. The author looks familiar ;)

Bud

Can you include an section on Tennis Fiction other than for kids; my favorites “World Class” Jane and Burt Boyar “You Don’t No Jack” Jack Marion “Tennis and Meaning of Life” Jay Jennings

Great idea, and thanks for sharing a few of your favorites!

Roger Hare

Thanks for your your great list and will be certainly be perusing some of these very soon. Only additions you might want to consider:

Coffee Table: “Book of Tennis Racquets”, Siegfied Kuebler – great for racquet collectors and viewing your favorite racquets of the past

Fiction: “World Class”,Boyar & Boyar – adult fiction you can’t put down about early 60’s tennis right before and during the new “open” era. Also, “You Don’t No Jack”, Marion. If you ever played USTA league tennis you will love this one

Instruction: “Teaching Tennis Pro”, Leary – this is an oldie. If you can find this it, it is like a good pro giving you tips and how to improve your strokes via illustration and text. Also, Vic Braden’s “Tennis for the Future” has lot of photos that help with this visualization process too.

Books for Beginners – “Junior Tennis for Parents…A Sweat Equity Approach”, Marion – If you have kids starting tennis this is a must get. Will save you time and money

Strategy – “Think to Win” – Fox; great read, since he was the coach of Brad Gilbert who wrote ultimate strategy book “Winning Ugly”. Combine these together and this is dynamite!

All I have, and again appreciate your list!

(also, saw John’s comment on a Nastase novel, I have one called “The Net” by him . Somewhat interesting and little edgy)

Thanks for stopping by and sharing a few additional books – love the recommendations.

You too sir! Hey, left one off that has always served well and timeless in the psychology and mental category – “Mental Toughness for Sports”, Loehr. Look forward to looking on this site in the future for others to read. Again, thanks!

20 tennis books you must read [New additions]

I've put together a guide of interesting tennis books which make for a great read. We have read a lot of them, with the other ones coming highly recommended to us!

To see them on Amazon - just click on the image. If you have any other suggestions we are more than happy to include them here.

Hope you find the list useful!

The Inner Game of Tennis by Timothy Galwey

It's been a long time since I read this but it's still one of the bestselling tennis books in the world. There is no question that you should have this on your bookshelf. It offers great insight into the mental side of the game and can help you overcome on-court difficulties. Sports Scientist Nick Winkelman - who was on our podcast only had good things to say about it!

Open: An Autobiography By Andre Agassi

Open: An Autobiography By Andre Agassi

The Inner Game of Tennis By W. Timothy Gallwey

The Inner Game of Tennis By W. Timothy Gallwey

Winning Ugly By Brad Gilbert

Winning Ugly By Brad Gilbert

Andre Agassi’s autobiography, Open, is a candid and insightful look at his life and career. In the book, Andre Agassi discusses his early years as a junior tennis prodigy, his highly successful professional career, and his eventual retirement from the sport.

While Open does provide some behind-the-scenes glimpses of the world of professional tennis, it is primarily a story about Agassi’s journey as a person. He is candid about his struggles with addiction and depression and offers readers an honest look at the highs and lows of his life. Written with humor and insight, Open is an engaging autobiography that will appeal to fans of tennis and biographies alike.

The Inner Game of Tennis

Gallwey’s Inner Game of Tennis introduced a new way of thinking about the psychology of sports and competition. The book was based on his experiences as a competitive player and tennis coach and challenged many conventional ideas about improving one’s performance. Gallwey argued that the key to success in any activity is not to focus on the external goals but the internal process.

In other words, it is more important to focus on the quality of one’s actions than on the results. This philosophy has been applied to many areas, including business, education, and personal development. The Inner Game of Tennis remains one of the most influential tennis books ever written on the subject of sports psychology.

Winning Ugly

In his book, Winning Ugly, former player, Olympic medalist and tennis coach Brad Gilbert explores the role of psychology and mental warfare in tennis. Gilbert argues that while mental toughness is undoubtedly important, it is not the only factor determining success on the tennis court. He believes tennis players who focus too much on winning can often become their worst enemy.

Instead, Brad Gilbert advocates for the “ugly game.” This approach involves playing to your strengths and making your opponent work hard for every point. Playing smart and taking advantage of your opponent’s weaknesses can win even when you’re not playing your best.

While “Winning Ugly” may not be a pretty tennis strategy , Gilbert’s “ugly tennis game” is a proven winning tennis strategy for success.

As a tennis coach, I found Patrick’s book very inspiring as he touches on inner thoughts and tough decisions a coach has to make in a very difficult environment of professional tennis.

Another aspect is that Patrick did not play tennis himself professionally, and in his book, he shares his journey of making himself the coach and the man he is now.

In addition, his book is completely different from autobiographies of ex-players and tennis legends. I believe this book can truly reveal what goes into the making of a tennis player.

Reviews of the Top 8 Tennis Books

Below is our list of the top 8 tennis books. I will review each book in more detail.

#1 – String Theory, On Tennis by David Foster Wallace

On Tennis is a collection of five tennis essays by the great writer, David Foster Wallace . He describes in detail what it’s like to compete by yourself on the tennis court, in a way that only competitive tennis players will understand.

There were several times throughout the book when I got goosebumps because of the way he articulates the feelings of competition. This one makes a great tennis gift as well.

String Theory On Tennis by David Foster Wallace

The chapter on Federer, Roger Federer as Religious Experience (NYT) , is must-read material for any tennis player and fan. Other chapters include David’s own story of playing competitive junior tennis in the windy, stormy midwest, his hilarious critique of Tracy Austin’s memoir, and an analysis of former pro player and coach Michael Joyce.

#2 – The Inner Game of Tennis by W. Timothy Gallwey

Along with String Theory above, this is the only other book that I would consider required reading for tennis players and coaches .

The Inner Game of Tennis by W. Timothy Gallwey

Professional athletes from the NBA, to soccer, to the NFL use this book as a guide to better mental and physical performance in the arena. Coaching greats, Steve Kerr (Golden State Warriors) and Pete Carroll (Seattle Seahawks) credit the book for much of their success.

Tennis players will get a bit more out of it since Timothy uses tennis as the medium for teaching competitors how to find that right mental state and improve.

This book will teach you how to:

  • Play better tennis under pressure.
  • Practice tennis more effectively so you develop your strokes faster.
  • Stay focused on the court so you play your best tennis.

Coaches will learn the best methods for teaching and learning tennis as well. I don’t think I would trust a tennis coach who hasn’t read this book.

#3 – Open by Andre Agassi

This book is simply an amazing tennis story by one of the best tennis players of all time . Andre Agassi had a rough childhood with a lot of pressure. It’s no wonder he turned to drugs and rebellion as a way of keeping some control over his life.

Open by Andre Agassi

In this autobiography, you’ll learn how the combination of a tough father, insane talent, and early fame created an unhappy tennis star. Agassi bravely shares behind-the-scenes stories from his personal life that makes for a great book for tennis fans of all generations.

#4 – Winning Ugly by Brad Gilbert

This tennis book is a great introduction to strategy and competition for beginner tennis players. Higher-level players will still get a lot out of this book as well, but don’t feel like you have to follow all of Brad’s rules.

Winning Ugly by Brad Gilbert

Brad Gilbert played professional tennis in the 80s and early 90s, reaching number four in the world at one point. He also coached Andre Agassi through the late 90s and is undoubtedly one of the top minds in our game.

Brad does a great job of explaining how to analyze an opponent’s tennis game and use that knowledge to your strategic advantage. His pre-match routines outlined in the book will help you play your best right from the start of the match as well. He lists out exactly what you should have in your tennis bag, how you should warm up, eat, and more.

His tough, gritty approach isn’t for everyone, and he does have some questionable strategic advice, like choosing to receive rather than serve first after winning the toss. Overall, however, this is still a great read. Use your own judgment to decide which of Brad’s advice works best for you.

#5 – Naomi Osaka: Her Journey to Finding Her Power and Her Voice by Ben Rothenberg

Released in January of 2024, this book reveals the fascinating upbringing, adolescence, and professional tennis career of the global superstar, Naomi Osaka.

Naomi Osaka tennis book

She’s one of the best tennis players of the last decade, but it’s all she’s done beyond tennis that makes her story great. Osaka broke ground by being one of the first athletes to refuse to play with her stance against racism. She’s been an outspoken advocate for mental health, a victim of depression and anxiety.

Ben tells these stories and more, including her 2018 US Open victory over Serena Williams, with first-hand quotes and detailed accounts of the sport’s biggest stories surrounding Naomi.

Listen to my interview with Ben Rothenberg to get a preview of his book.

#6 – Essential Tennis by Ian Westermann

This is a newer book in the tennis world. After reading it, I’d consider it one of the top books for club-level tennis players who want to improve . It reads like a modern-day Inner Game of Tennis .

Essential Tennis by Ian Westermann

Ian has helped 10,000s of people improve their tennis game through his online videos, courses, and lessons. He’s taken the most important information he’s learned to create this book. He starts with the process of improvement, then moves on to the importance of video, before diving into stroke technique and strategy.

I was able to improve my backhand after reading the first several chapters. You’ll find several chapters or paragraphs that resonate most with you and can unlock your potential to get to the next level.

#7 –  A Handful of Summers by Gordon Forbes

At the end of each doubles podcast interview, I ask the guest for their favorite tennis book. A Handful of Summers might be the most popular choice.

Handful of Summers by Gordon Forbes

In the book, Gordon Forbes recounts his years playing pro tennis and traveling around the globe. This memoir tells stories from one of the great eras in tennis history during the 1960s. The accounts are often funny, entertaining, and insightful.

This book is great for both tennis players and fans because it is a fun read that doesn’t require much tennis knowledge.

#8 – But Seriously by John McEnroe

This book provides a ton of insight into one of the best, most controversial tennis players of all time. John McEnroe is often remembered for his antics, but what happened after his years on tour is just as intriguing.

In this autobiography, you’ll learn how McEnroe confronted his demons to become the respected businessman and analyst he is today. Features To Look For in Tennis Books

When choosing a tennis book, are several features to consider that can help you get the most out of your purchase.

Tennis books come in many different shapes and sizes, each offering unique information and insights into the game of tennis. While some are geared toward beginner players, others offer advanced strategies for experienced athletes.

Interactive Features

Look for books that provide clear and concise instruction on the fundamentals of tennis. This should include information such as proper techniques and strategies, rules, and scoring systems, as well as exercises and drills to help improve your game.

Additionally, many books now include interactive features like diagrams and videos which can be extremely helpful in ensuring you’re using the right technique.

Game Overview

Aside from the basics, it’s also useful to look for books that provide a comprehensive overview of the game. This can include topics such as the history of tennis, interviews with top players, and detailed analysis of professional matches.

By exploring these areas, you’ll gain a better understanding of how to apply your skills to the court and become a better player.

Skill level

Make sure that the book you choose best suits your individual skill level. There’s no point in buying a book of advanced strategies and techniques if you’re just starting out. Ain’t No Party Like a Sally Rooney Book Party! Inside the Buzzy “Premiere” of Intermezzo

Image may contain Emma Roberts Fashion Clothing Footwear High Heel Shoe Adult Person Accessories Glasses and Bag

It’s Sally Rooney’s party—and she can stay home if she wants to. “I think Sally is probably the only author of my generation who you could pull throwing something like this off for without them being here, because her name is so ubiquitous,” Belletrist co-founder Karah Preiss told Vogue . The ‘this’ in question wasn’t the type of established book party the industry has come to know, rather it was a redraft in the form of a Book Premiere , pulling in flashier tactics typically reserved for a red carpet outing to unveil a new movie. And judging by the buzz, Rooney’s incoming fourth novel, Intermezzo, is set to be a box office smash in its own right.

Preiss and lit-loving actress Emma Roberts, who launched Belletrist in 2017, teamed up with storied publishing house FSG to host the bash at the Irish Arts Center on 11th Avenue on Wednesday. Rooney lives just outside a small town in the west of Ireland—similar to the fictional one inhabited by her passion-addled Normal People protagonists—and prefers to let her work be the star of the show, hence why she was not in attendance. It was, therefore, up to the evening’s hosts to put on the type of warm welcome the Irish are known for. Mini shepherd’s pies, imported homegrown cocktail sausages, pints of Guinness, and all.

Preiss, the daughter of a literary publicist and a writer, said that while she grew up fully aware of the importance of marking a new publication, that concept doesn’t feel quite right for the readers of today anymore. “I think the book party—especially as the publishing landscape has changed—has lost its luster a little bit. But I think there’s something provocative about a book premiere insead.” Roberts agreed. “Since COVID, it’s been hard to get Belletrist events going again, but now we’re in a place to get people in a room listening to a DJ and talking to Sally’s editor. Just because it’s a book party, why should the party be quiet?!”

The chance to hear from Mitzi Angel, who’s now FSG president (the first female to hold the role), was a major draw for the crowd. “I published her first novel when I was working in the UK, and I have been working with her ever since,” Angel told Vogue . “I precisely remember reading Conversations With Friends for the first time. The first page made me laugh. There’s something about that moment when you encounter a certain line, a line that seems to contain so much humor, intelligence, and flair, but there’s a control there. Within a few paragraphs, it was apparent that she had that storyteller's gift. The ability to bring characters to life economically, in very few words. That instantaneous moment of recognition happens very rarely, but when it does, it’s one of the great joys in publishing.”

Angel said that FSG doesn’t tend to “do parties like this” often—but a Rooney release is a very special occasion that brings out a dedicated fanbase, ready to be inspired. Similarly, the Irish Arts Center’s director of programming and education, Rachael W. Gilkey, likened the celebration to an evening in 2019 that honored recently deceased novelist Edna O’Brien. Fitting, because arguably, without a trailblazer like O’Brien, there wouldn’t be ensuing generations of Irishwomen keen to dip their pen into the inkwell of life.

Following a panel between Angel, Preiss, and Roberts, which teased what to expect from Intermezzo , attendees gathered at the Happy Medium beading station, weaving chess-themed friendship-style bracelets. New adornments on their wrists, they then hopped into a photo booth to get strips of Intermezzo-branded snaps. (The perfect souvenir bookmark to take home, one might say.) ‘#BookTok’-famous DJ Books, aka Adam Beaser, who mixes electronic dance music with audiobooks, also made his IRL debut at the event. “He’s probably the only DJ who went to the Iowa Writers Workshop and was a Rhodes fellow. He has major chops,” Preiss laughed.

Ruby Slevin, an Irish tailor and the founder of Banshee of Savile Row, was one fan enjoying the scene—fresh off a plane from London. “I thought it was too exciting to miss—I can’t wait to read my copy while I’m here for meetings this week. Look how stunning the cover is!”

Not since Marc Jacobs’ Spring 2013 show for Louis Vuitton has a style-conscious millennial crowd seen this much furor around yellow and gray checkered squares. Thankfully, this lent itself nicely to the merch opportunities. As well as their bracelets and Majestic Photobooth memories, guests took home enamel pins, pencils, Post-Its, a scarf, and a tote.

And, of course, a coveted copy of the book—the accessory you’re about to see everyone you know carrying around from September 24.
