Osprey Reef is a true expedition-style destination and our visit is subject to appropriate weather conditions.

Visit Stanley Island in the Flinders Island Group and take a walk to view the isolated Endaen Aboriginal rock art guided by a traditional owner who will offer an interpretation. Enjoy a day exploring Forbes Island, an excellent spot for swimming, scuba, snorkelling or glass-bottom boat tours from the pristine sandy beaches. Hear the story of beche-de-mer fisherman Frederick Lancaster who inhabited this island and visit his gravesite. We also have an opportunity to go beachcombing at a nearby remote island, possibly Magra, Saunders, or Sir Charles Hardy.

Visit Restoration Island or Resto, as the locals call it.  Here Captain Bligh, of the infamous Mutiny on the Bounty, made his first landfall after a long ocean crossing from Tonga, in May 1789. He named it Restoration Island because the food they found (oysters and native fruits) greatly restored their spirits and because that date was Oak Apple Day, the anniversary of the restoration of King Charles II.

Today Restoration Island is not just a National Park; one-third of the island is leased to David Glasheen, a former mining tycoon, who, after losing his fortune in the Black Friday market crash, decided to live a solitary existence on the island, and has done so for over 2 decades. It is an idyllic coastal island with a granite and volcanic peak 116 metres in height and a beautiful shark tooth-shaped beach spit where guest will enjoy water activities and time to explore the island.

This morning explore historical sites at Albany Island or Somerset.

Later, surrounded by glistening sea and bathed in the glow of twilight, we enjoy sundowner drinks and the company of like-minded explorers as we relax and watch the sun gently sink below the horizon at the Tip of Cape York – the northernmost point of the Australian mainland continent.

In the morning, we visit the indigenous art centre to watch printmakers at work, with the opportunity to purchase prints that catch your eye.

Enjoy traditional kai kai (Traditional Lunch) prepared by the local community – a feast of locally caught fresh fish, curried fish and crayfish. Spend the afternoon swimming at a local beach, hosted by traditional owners.

Visit the art centre and join in print, weaving and jewellery making workshops with local artists. Watch a traditional dance performance and listen to the gorgeous harmonies of the local singers.

Join an informative tour of Thursday Island to learn about its interesting pearling history and multicultural influences. At Thursday Island we also have free time to explore all the island has to offer, including Gab Titui Cultural Centre and local shopping.

As we set off on our final Xplorer ride, our incredible adventure of Australia’s North comes to an end.  At 8:00 am we arrive at Horn Island, with the option for a post-cruise tour. There are daily flights to Cairns from Horn Island Airport. These are not included in the cruise fare.

For reverse direction: Arrive at Cairns at 8am.

This itinerary is an indication of the destinations we visit and activities on offer. Throughout the expedition we may make changes to the itinerary as necessary to maximise your expeditionary experience. Allowances may be made for seasonal variations, weather, tidal conditions, and any other event that may affect the operation of the vessel. Coral Expeditions suggests that you do not arrive on the day of embarkation or depart on the day of disembarkation due to any changes that may occur in scheduling.

Torres Straits Community Access:  The remote island communities of the Torres Straits are special areas. Over the past decades, these communities have welcomed Coral Expeditions and guests on many occasions. We respect that from time to time, planned visits my not be possible at short notice for varied reasons and will offer alternative excursions should visitation not be possible.

Torres Strait Heritage provides a  comprehensive, educational, moving and inspiring encounter that spans all facets of Torres Strait culture and history in a vast array of mediums.

The tour visits actual WW2 sites on the island, e.g. plane wrecks, underground command posts, slit trenches etc, while their entertaining commentary is a combination of both archival and personal stories.

This tour can be enjoyed in one day with a trip to Thursday Island, though with so much to see and do in the area, a overnight visit is a highlight.  Many packages available including lunch.

Horn & Thursday Islands

7:30am to 6:15pm

April to September

When you think of islands in Australia, the Torres Strait Islands may not be what springs to mind for most people, but with their unique history, culture and untouched beauty, they should be.

Not only does this archipelago claim the most northerly part of Australia and the closest point to our nearest international border – approximately 5kms between the most northern island and Papua New Guinea – there are at least 274 islands surrounded by fringing reef, turquoise seas and abundant marine life. Of these islands, only 17 are inhabited, of which are divided into five major island clusters (Nations).

Due to its remote location, limited people have the privilege of seeing this paradise, so two friends Fraser Nai, Traditional Owner of Yorke (Masig) Island, and John Palmer wanted to offer a service that allowed people to visit in an attainable way. And thus, A Strait Day was born.

Enjoy an Island Style feast including local crayfish

Strait Experience’s one day tour allows you to explore two of the more populated islands, Thursday (Waiben) and Horn (Ngarupai), as well as enjoy a scenic flight along the east coast of the Cape York Peninsula, the tip of Cape York and the southern islands of the Torres Strait. The tour departs from Cairns Airport on Skytrans at 7:30am and returns at 6:15pm on the first Saturday of each month (April to September).

The Torres Strait is an important crossover of cultures and Australia’s only area where both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island cultures intersect on their traditional countries (including the Northern Peninsula Area of Cape York). It’s been a trade route between Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and even Papua New Guinean people for thousands of years.

With over 90% of the population identifying as Indigenous, culture is understandably a strong theme across the day. Guests will enjoy a song and dance performance by Joey Laifoo’s Island Stars , as well as an island-style feast prepared by Joey and his family – including local staples like fresh crayfish, yams, fried scones, sop sop (coconut, yam and banana stew), nummus (a pickled fish dish similar to ceviche) and sago (tapioca pudding). You’ll also have the opportunity to browse the Gab Titui Cultural Centre and Art Center on Thursday Island with great local arts and crafts available to purchase.

The fascinating WWII history of the Torres Strait is also a strong undercurrent of the day. Learn more of the region’s military (and local) history when visiting key WWII sites and the Torres Strait Heritage Museum with knowledgeable guides – Vanessa and Liberty Seekee, have spearheaded much of the research efforts and restoration of many of the sites.

With its aforementioned proximity to our nearest international border, the Torres Strait (namely Horn Island) was a critical military base during the war and was the second-most bombed location in Australia (after Darwin). Approximately 500 bombs were dropped on Horn Island and sadly over 150 military personnel and 80 civilians lost their lives across the campaign.

Learn more about the Torres Strait Light Infantry Battalion

At the height of the war, over 5,000 American and Australian troops were stationed on the island. To this day the region remains the only place in Australia to have an entirely Indigenous battalion, The Torres Strait Light Infantry Battalion, consisting of over 800 Torres Strait Islander volunteers over its time. These men were integral to the efforts due to their intimate knowledge of the seas and their skill as seamen.

A Strait Day allows for a new and easy avenue to explore this untouched part of the country. While one day will never feel enough, it certainly inspires a love for the Torres Strait and a desire to return. Don’t forget, 272 more islands await.

Compliance status

We firmly believe that the internet should be available and accessible to anyone, and are committed to providing a website that is accessible to the widest possible audience, regardless of circumstance and ability.

To fulfill this, we aim to adhere as strictly as possible to the World Wide Web Consortium’s (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 (WCAG 2.1) at the AA level. These guidelines explain how to make web content accessible to people with a wide array of disabilities. Complying with those guidelines helps us ensure that the website is accessible to all people: blind people, people with motor impairments, visual impairment, cognitive disabilities, and more.

This website utilizes various technologies that are meant to make it as accessible as possible at all times. We utilize an accessibility interface that allows persons with specific disabilities to adjust the website’s UI (user interface) and design it to their personal needs.

Additionally, the website utilizes an AI-based application that runs in the background and optimizes its accessibility level constantly. This application remediates the website’s HTML, adapts Its functionality and behavior for screen-readers used by the blind users, and for keyboard functions used by individuals with motor impairments.

If you’ve found a malfunction or have ideas for improvement, we’ll be happy to hear from you. You can reach out to the website’s operators by using the following email

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation

Our website implements the ARIA attributes (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) technique, alongside various different behavioral changes, to ensure blind users visiting with screen-readers are able to read, comprehend, and enjoy the website’s functions. As soon as a user with a screen-reader enters your site, they immediately receive a prompt to enter the Screen-Reader Profile so they can browse and operate your site effectively. Here’s how our website covers some of the most important screen-reader requirements, alongside console screenshots of code examples:

Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website.

These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.

Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside it.

Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
  • ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
  • Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
  • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments

  • Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
  • Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over seven different coloring options.
  • Animations – person with epilepsy can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
  • Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
  • Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
  • Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
  • Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.

Browser and assistive technology compatibility

We aim to support the widest array of browsers and assistive technologies as possible, so our users can choose the best fitting tools for them, with as few limitations as possible. Therefore, we have worked very hard to be able to support all major systems that comprise over 95% of the user market share including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, Opera and Microsoft Edge, JAWS and NVDA (screen readers).

Notes, comments, and feedback

Despite our very best efforts to allow anybody to adjust the website to their needs. There may still be pages or sections that are not fully accessible, are in the process of becoming accessible, or are lacking an adequate technological solution to make them accessible. Still, we are continually improving our accessibility, adding, updating and improving its options and features, and developing and adopting new technologies. All this is meant to reach the optimal level of accessibility, following technological advancements. For any assistance, please reach out to

“Fantastic crew and large comfortable ferry, made the crossing all the more enjoyable.” Anna & Rob

Peddells Thursday Island Tours is a local indigenous family owned company that provides a year round scheduled passenger ferry service connecting the little port of SEISIA at the top of Cape York with the  commercial and administrative hub of Torres Strait, Thursday Island ( known as Waibene, also locally as T.I.).

Perched on an international shipping lane, the island is steeped in history.  Once known as a Port of Pearls during the heady days of the  pearling industry, later playing a pivotal role during WWII and today continuing to develop as a busy trading port and regional administrative centre.  The island’s story is intertwined with the rich cultural history of Torres Strait, a place that has to be experienced first hand, an  essential experience and must see for visitors, an island township a close knit community showcasing the region’s traditions and culture through art and dance at local cafes, public art, galleries and private studios, here are a few recommendations to get you started:

Waibene, T.I. is a township of around 3000 and most employment is within the many government agencies due the island’s strategic location.  Being a small remote town where business hours may vary from time to time, it’s best to keep an open mind, open heart and adopt the lifestyle of the island’s and go with the flow.  If you have the time and budget, plan ahead and overnight.

The origin story; Peddells Thursday Island Tours has it’s roots in the boat building and pearling industry, working for local pearling companies as shipwrights, lugger crew and exporters, keen to establish their own business they established Peddells Boatbuilding Enterprises in the 1970’s which eventually morphed into a charter boat, passenger ferries, tour business, most recently adding a ticketing office and gift store on Thursday Island Jetty, the curated offerings in the store promoting the works of Torres Strait and PNG artisans.

The vision to establish a regular passenger ferry connecting T.I. to Cape York, focused on improving life for community members by replacing  the need to cross the expanse of ocean in small open dinghies with large comfortable, purpose built ferries. With a wealth of knowledge of these seaways Peddells put to work their generations of maritime experience to design and build large modern passenger vessels specifically suited to variable local conditions and able to service the region year round, the latest two vessels being MV Torres Magic and MV Strait Magic.

Peddells Ferry Service has over 85 000 ocean crossings between Thursday Island and Seisia and continues to train local crew promoting them to their own command.  With generations of local maritime knowledge and traditional roots in Torres Strait, Peddells have an enduring commitment to providing the best possible service now and into the future.  For the most comfortable and enjoyable way to cross from Cape York with Thursday Island,  make Peddells ferry and Thursday Island guided T.I. tour your first choice.

“Essentially ocean crossings are at the heart of Peddells TI Tours DNA, family ancestry spanning from Inner, Western and Central Islands of Torres Strait.”

Birding Tours Australia

Torres Strait – Boigu, Saibai and Dauan

Islands of the northern torres strait – boigu, saibai and dauan.

The three Queensland islands of Boigu, Dauan and Saibai lie close to the Trans Fly area of New Guinea and are Australia’s two most northerly inhabited islands. Their close proximity to PNG means these islands are some of the most exciting birding locations in Australia. The islands are also amongst the remotest in Australia, access is difficult and there is very limited accommodation making visits for more than one day problematic.

These rarely visited islands contain some of Australia’s most sought after and highly prized birds such as:

  • Red-capped Flowerpecker
  • Singing Starling
  • Collared Imperial-Pigeon
  • Coconut Lorikeet
  • Gurney’s Eagle
  • Uniform Swiftlet
  • Orange-fronted Fruit Dove
  • Ashy-bellied White-eye

I n addition to these specialties we’ve seen Papuan Spine-tailed Swift, Zoe’s Imperial Pigeon, Orange-fronted Fruit Dove, Stephan’s Emerald Dove, Variable Goshawk, Hudsonian Whimbrel, Long-billed H/E, Garganey, House Swift, Pacific Swallow, Coroneted Fruit Dove and Long-tailed Honey-buzzard, Pink-spotted Fruit Dove and Blyth’s (Papuan) Hornbill.

Previous Trip Reports

The best time to visit these islands is like elsewhere, early morning and late afternoon. We anchor offshore in the lee of the island in our vessel Tropic Paradise and zodiac ashore each day. When not onshore we travel the protected coastline and rivers in search of the island’s specialties and PNG vagrants.

Our tours are held between January and April which is the peak time for birds moving between the islands and mainland PNG. Occasionally we’ll organise longer tours to visit other northern Torres Strait islands such as Dauan, Ugar and Darnley.

Prior to the tour there is accommodation on Horn Island which is the large island next to Thursday Island and home to the area’s main airport. Qantas fly twice daily to Horn Island from Cairns. The tours start when we board the airconditioned Tropic Paradise and conclude when we disembark. Once on board everything is supplied except alcohol, which we organise in the weeks prior to the tour.

Once you’ve met our skipper, crew and chef we depart Horn Island and travel a short distance to Little Tuesday Island for views of the range restricted Ashy-bellied (Pale) white-eye, before heading to the northern islands. Our itinerary on the northern islands is tide dependant and we could visit either Saibai or Boigu first.

Prior to departure we send out a trip bird list as well as ‘what to bring’ information. We do recommend having your Japanese Encephalitis vax prior to departure, although in recent years the advice is that it’s not essential.

Upcoming Tours

Our upcoming tours are in Feb/Mar 2026.  Please see our ‘ Tours schedule ‘ page and contact us if you require any further information.  Previous trip reports PDF’s are available to download.

Tour de Cure cyclists visited Mimosa Public School to share their healthy message with students. Jim Griffiths reports.

15 May 2024

Cyclists on bikes with students and a teacher.

A school yard of pumped-up Mimosa Public School students greeted 71 visiting Tour de Cure cyclists on the final stages of their human-powered journey from Port Stephens to Sydney’s Barangaroo via the Hunter Valley and Central Coast last week.

This was no pitstop, however, as the peloton shared its Be Fit - Be Healthy - Be Happy message with students.

Principal Leesa Martin said the visit and presentation fitted in well with the school’s strong focus on wellbeing.

“We take a holistic approach to education and inviting the Tour to Cure to come and visit us has helped us promote healthy initiatives with our students and also raise money to help find a cure for cancer,” she said.

The Tour de Cure schools’ program promotes physical activity and encourages an active lifestyle and healthy personal choices.

“It was a wonderful and exciting opportunity for the children to see a big event in action and be part of a bigger picture,” said Mrs Martin.

For Year 5 student Ayden Impey, son of Tour de France stage winner Daryl Impey, the visit not only coincided with his birthday, but left him with the important message that “being fit, being happy and being healthy is very important”.

“It was very cool to see all the cyclists come in. It was fun,” he said.

Tour de Cure has raised $118 million since its inception, as well as funded 979 cancer projects and educated more than 180,000 children on how to lead a healthy lifestyle.

Meet Liberty + Vanessa

Liberty and Vanessa Seekee are part of a 5th generation Torres Strait Family, with Liberty’s family being merchants, Sea Captains and Pearl Divers. Vanessa has been in the Torres Strait since 1994, when she arrived in the area as a teacher, and began research into the regions World War II history.

In 2005, Vanessa was awarded the OAM (Order of Australia Medal) for services to the World War II veterans of Torres Strait. The same year she completed her Masters in the history of the World War II airbase at Horn Island, Torres Strait.

With over 25yrs experience, they are passionate about providing guests with the best experience possible. They have designed a variety of day and overnight packages and experiences which can be completely tailored to each group’s requirements.

When not doing tours, the couple are dedicated to assisting the veteran and civilian community. They assist with research for new memorials, plaques, exhibitions, military commemorative events, and act as advocates for veterans.

They organise annual veteran reunions to Torres Strait and conduct specialised history tours to places of interest.  Their largest current project is the WW2 Torres Strait Conservation Project, which is seeing WW2 sites in the area sensitively conserved so that generations to come will enjoy and learn from them.  The most recent reunion saw a 10-tonne artillery piece conserved and installed in the gun pit it was in during WW2.

Stunning auroras light up skies across world as massive solar geomagnetic storm hits Earth

Skies around the world have shone with extraordinary colours overnight due to a rare solar weather event.

The aurora borealis and australis — the northern and southern lights — stunned those who ventured outside to take in the views, and provided amateur photographers with the opportunity to take some truly spectacular pictures.

A geomagnetic storm of a strength not seen for two decades was behind the phenomena.

Here is a selection of some of the most stunning displays.

Aurora australis

An old church at Port Arthur photographed in front of a pink and blue sky

Photographer Sean O'Riordan, who was visiting Tasmania, said he was lucky enough to photograph the aurora before flying to Brisbane on Saturday.

"I was literally on the beach shooting and I had to wrap up and run back to the camper, pack my bag, change and get to the airport," Mr O'Riordan said.

Green, red and yellow lights in the sky over a bay

He said the colours were visible to the naked eye.

"You could see the pillars and the beams that were rising off it, which was incredible," he said.

"I've never seen anything like it before. There was just a mash of red, green pink."
