You know the saying: "tall, dark and handsome". That first criteria can be pretty attractive to some people, but for others, it can lead to feelings of insecurity – unfortunately, our height is yet another aspect of our appearances which can make us feel inadequate as a result of societal pressures.

Tom Cruise is literally at the height of his career. The actor sent social media ablaze last night with a torrent of comment about his height when he was seen curiously taller than ever alongside Kate Middleton , Duchess of Cambridge, in London at the premiere of “Top Gun: Maverick.”

Cruise, who stands at 5-foot-7, was nearly eye-to-eye on the red carpet with 5-foot-9 Middleton in Prada ‘s suede cutout pumps set on 3-inch stiletto heels — boosting Middleton’s height to 6 feet tall. What a feat for the action star.

So, how did Cruise appear to catapult nearly 4 to 5 inches higher? Dressed in patent leather shoes that incorporated a stacked heel, it looked like it added close to 1.5-2 inches to his frame. According to some observers, the remaining 3 inches needed to reach Middleton’s height could be owed to elevating insoles, which typically support around 1.5 to nearly 3 additional inches, though they need to coordinate with the footwear’s silhouette for a secure fit.

With or without them, Cruise has walked tall for years alongside actresses clad in soaring stiletto heels by embracing astute styling tricks for grand height illusion. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with embracing one’s true height, but Cruise has a history of purposefully looking taller — he likely believes it’s a flattering silhouette that puts confidence in his steps.

Indeed. He has mastered this height hack through subtle, carefully coordinated poses along with the right clothes and shoes.

Cruise’s ex-wife Nicole Kidman , who measures 5-foot-10, was perhaps the most challenging of his red carpet partners, but together, they masterfully erected him throughout their marriage.

Just look to their arrival at the Herb Ritts exhibition opening on Oct. 22, 1992. The couple posed with their heads close together, with Kidman’s head leaning lower into him to deflect from the obvious height difference. Meanwhile, Kidman chose a modest kitten heel compared to Cruise’s taller Cuban heel. Nailed it.

But mistakes can be made. Months earlier on Jan. 18 at the Golden Globe Awards, Kidman, with an arched back and positioned with a mile-long space between their faces, with her chest at his side, made the contrast obvious — even in her kitten heels — as Cruise’s length diminished.

During his marriage to Katie Holmes , who is 5-foot-9, there were plenty of red carpet challenges despite the “Dawson’s Creek” star coming in 1-inch shorter than Kidman. But unlike Kidman, Holmes didn’t embrace kitten heels often — she preferred stilettos around 4 inches. But, by leaving some space between their bodies and Cruise leading ahead of her as they walked hand-in-hand at the Bambi Awards in 2007 in Duesseldorf, Germany, the height differences were minimized as much as possible.

The simplest trick Cruise employs is drawing attention upward through pattern and color. Alongside his 5-foot-9 co-star Cameron Diaz at their “Knight and Day” premiere on July 23, 2010 in Bordeaux, France, Cruise chose a striped ice blue top with dark-wash jeans and dress shoes that had stacked heels. His pose — a slant while partially positioning himself forward next to her — elongated the body as she leaned in and placed one foot behind her.

At the “Knight and Day” premiere in Seville, Spain, on June 16, 2010 he literally took things up a notch in heeled boots that added around 2 extra inches. They looked nearly even while she stood in 4-inch heels.

It’s not often Cruise gets the chance to look taller than his leading ladies, but he did so next to his “Top Gun: Maverick” co-star Jennifer Connelly, who is on equal footing with him, matching at 5-foot-7. Even with Connelly in heels, he managed to gain a fairly generous boost above her while at the Cannes Film Festival on May 18. As seen in his pose, Cruise diminishes the appearance of his width by standing to his side and positioning his body at an angle as she stood vertically and straight ahead. The stacked heels helped too.

A true ’90s power couple. Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman ‘s romance didn’t last, but their relationship remains a subject of fascination for movie fans around the world.

The Oscar winner and the Mission: Impossible actor met in early 1990 while filming Tony Scott ‘s Days of Thunder , in which Cruise played race car driver Cole Trickle and Kidman appeared as his love interest, Dr. Claire Lewicki. Some critics thought the film was too similar to 1986’s Top Gun , which also starred Cruise under the direction of Scott, but the romance developing between its two young stars quickly eclipsed any negative press.

Less than one year after finalizing his divorce from Mimi Rogers , Cruise married Kidman in December 1990 during a private ceremony held on Christmas Eve. The low-key event was attended by their family members and held in Telluride, Colorado.

“I was so young when I got married,” Kidman told Red magazine in 2016, reflecting on her marriage to Cruise. The Moulin Rouge! actress was 23 at the time, while the Top Gun: Maverick producer was 28. “I look back now and I’m like, ‘What?'”

Shortly after their wedding, the couple worked together again on Ron Howard ‘s drama Far and Away , which hit theaters in 1992. That same year, the duo adopted daughter Isabella shortly after her birth. In 1995, they adopted son Connor, who later starred in the films Seven Pounds and Red Dawn .

Cruise and Kidman collaborated for a third time on Stanley Kubrick’s final film, Eyes Wide Shut , which premiered in 1999. “We were happily married through that,” the Hours actress told The New York Times in 2020, reflecting on where she stood with Cruise while making the controversial movie. “We would go go-kart racing after [intense] scenes. We’d rent out a place and go racing at three in the morning.”

Less than two years after the movie’s release, however, the couple announced their separation. “Citing the difficulties inherent in divergent careers which constantly keep them apart, they concluded that an amicable separation seemed best for both of them at this time,” a rep for the duo said in a February 2001 statement.

The Jerry Maguire actor later moved on with Penélope Cruz before marrying Katie Holmes in 2006. Cruise and the Dawson’s Creek alum, who share daughter Suri (born in 2006), split in 2012.

Kidman, for her part, was briefly engaged to Lenny Kravitz in 2003. In June 2006, she wed country star Keith Urban , with whom she shares daughters Sunday Rose (born in 2008) and Faith (born in 2010).

Cruise filed for divorce from Kidman, citing irreconcilable differences for the split. Former Scientologist Mike Rinder claimed in 2022 that the church played a role in the couple's breakup by creating a "distance" between them. The apostate also alleged that the Church of Scientology wiretapped Kidman's phone to monitor her influence on Cruise, who is one of the religion's most prominent members.

The church denied Rinder's claims in a September 2022 statement, saying: "The Church never ordered or participated in any illegal wiretapping. Mike Rinder is an inveterate liar who seeks to profit from his dishonesty. He supports himself by orchestrating the harassment of his former Church and its leader through false police reports, incendiary propaganda and fraudulent media stories.”

The actual difference in Tom and Kidman's height

Nicole Kidman makes rare comment about relationship with Tom Cruise

Nicole Kidman has spoken out about her former relationship with Tom Cruise .

In honor of the anniversary of their 1999 movie Eyes Wide Shut , Kidman reflected on what the filming process was like for her, as well as whether or not the film’s director, Stanley Kubrick, decided to take advantage of their relationship.

“I suppose he was mining it,” the actress said in an interview with the Los Angeles Times . “There were ideas he was interested in. He’d ask a lot of questions. But he had a strong sense of the story he was telling. I do remember him saying, ‘Triangles are hard. You have to tread carefully when it’s a triangle.’”

The Oscar winner added: “Because one person could feel ganged up on. But he was aware of that and knew how to manage us.”

Kidman and Cruise were married for more than a decade, from 1990 to 2001. They share two children together Isabella, 31 and Connor, 29.

Despite their relationship at the time, The Family Affair actress admitted that being a woman led to a slightly different relationship with the director simply because of her gender. “There’s something about being a woman in that equation, too,” she continued. “And Stanley liked women. He had a different relationship with Tom. They worked more closely together on his character.”

This isn’t the first time Kidman has talked about the dynamic she had with Cruise while they filmed the movie. She also spoke to the New York Times about her marriage to Cruise in October 2020.

“We were happily married through that,” Kidman told the outlet. “We would go go-kart racing after those scenes. We’d rent out a place and go racing at three in the morning. I don’t know what else to say. Maybe I don’t have the ability to look back and dissect it. Or I’m not willing to.”

Following her divorce from Cruise, Kidman married Keith Urban in 2006. They share two children together, Sunday, 15, and Faith, 13.

In April, the musician took the stage at the 49th AFI Life Achievement Award Gala , where he explained what it was like to meet the Big Little Lies actress and how scared he was to call her .

“I was trying to play it cool, but inside I felt like I’d snuck into the royal ball simply because Nic had such a truly otherworldly aura about her,” he said, referring to how they met in January 2005 during the G’Day USA gala. “I felt a bit like I was meeting a real-life princess.”

Urban admitted that he did “manage to get her phone number on a tiny piece of paper” but it took him some extra courage to actually give the actress a call because of his fears.

“I was scared. I was nervous to call her,” he explained. “I did, as you probably figured out, pluck up the courage to finally call her.”

“I do want to take an opportunity to talk about Nic’s heart and her spirit. We got married in June 2006 and barely four months into our marriage, my addictions that I’d done really nothing about, blew our marriage to smithereens,” he further explained. “And I went into the Betty Ford Center for three months. Four months into a marriage I’m in rehab for three months. I had no idea what was going to happen to us.”

“And if you want to see what love in action really looks like, give that a whirl,” he said. “Nic pushed through every negative voice, I’m sure even some of her own. And she chose love. And here we are tonight, 18 years later.”

The Real Reason Nicole Kidman And Tom Cruise Broke Up

It was supposed to be a perfect match. Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, two young celebrities at the height of international fame. The pair graced headlines throughout their marriage, which spanned through the 1990s. They weren't just well-known in their own right — they were the power couple. Their union itself was a lightning rod for media attention, especially considering their steamy roles in Stanley Kubrick's erotic 1999 film Eyes Wide Shut. Beyond that, the couple seemed to be genuinely head-over-heels for each other.

Even after their split, it seemed completely unclear what happened. Nicole did crack a now-famous joke in a David Letterman interview where she revealed, "I can wear heels now," but the pair stayed relatively quiet about what went down. While Nicole claimed to DuJour  that she "thought [their] life together was perfect," Tom cryptically admitted, Nicole "knows why" the pair split. All in all: they had children, they had fame. Seemingly, they had it all — and it all fell apart. Why?

It begins so beautifully

Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman's relationship started in 1989, where they connected through — where else? — Hollywood. Kidman was a rising star, fresh from a string of Australian films and miniseries which had won her increasing accolades and attention in her country, the highest being the Australian Film Institute's Best Television Actress award, which she won at the age of 17. It was during a viewing of the 1989 Australian film Dead Calm that Cruise first set eyes on Kidman, according to Vanity Fair . Impressed with what he saw, he began putting things in motion to meet her in person to maybe cast her in a movie — and perhaps more, being that at the time he was in the process of divorcing from his first wife, Mimi Rogers.

So they met, and in short, Kidman fell hard for Cruise. And she'd be the first to tell you so. "He basically swept me off my feet," she told Vanity Fair in 2002. "I fell madly, passionately in love. And as happens when you fall in love, my whole plan in terms of what I wanted for my life — I was like, 'Forget it. This is it.'" Together, the duo starred as romantic opposites in 1990's Days of Thunder , and once Cruise's divorce was through, married the same year. At the time, Cruise was 28 , and Kidman was 23

Was Tom Cruse and Nicole Kidman's marriage destined to fail?

In what should have seemed inevitable from the very beginning, fractures in the marriage started to occur over a very specific ideological split — Tom Cruise was (and remains) a Scientologist, and Nicole Kidman was not, and seemingly had no intentions on ever becoming one. And if you've been keeping up with Scientology scrutiny in the news lately, it shouldn't surprise you to hear that a union like that doesn't have much of a chance, long-term.

As has been extensively covered in Lawrence Wright's book Going Clear , and the accompanying documentary film by Alex Gibney , the biggest source of friction between Cruise and Kidman came from forces outside their marriage — and inside Cruise's church . Supposedly, the story goes, leaders in Scientology were so concerned that Kidman was pulling Cruise away from Scientology, they began to conspire to end the marriage , something it had been rumored they had previously done with Cruise's first wife, Mimi Rogers. Marriages are hard enough to keep together without billion-dollar organizations reportedly pulling at every frayed thread, so the idea that this meddling would lead to the end of their marriage is not a hard pill to swallow at all.

Starting a family was tough for Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman

As things were beginning, there seemed to be no sign of the future misgivings that would tear the couple apart. In their breaks from movie shoots, they did fun things like skydiving together , and Nicole Kidman's enthusiasm for her Tom Cruise, and starting a family, was evident. "I was desperate to have a baby with him." she later said to Vanity Fair . "I didn't care if we were married."

Unfortunately, their path to biological parenthood was unsuccessful, leaving their marriage bookended by loss. "I had a miscarriage at the end of my marriage, but I had an ectopic pregnancy at the beginning of my marriage. It was incredibly traumatic for me," Kidman told  Marie Claire . She was also told by doctors that it would be "highly unlikely" for her to conceive, according to Tatler . "That yearning. It's a huge, aching yearning. And the loss! The loss of a miscarriage is not talked about enough," she told the same outlet, adding, "That's massive grief to certain women. There's an enormous amount of pain and an enormous amount of joy on the other side of it."

Tom and Nicole ultimately chose to adopt two children over the course of three years , Isabella and Connor, born in 1992 and 1995, respectively. They would raise the kids together up until their divorce after the decade's end in 2001.

Did Tom Cruise's religion get in the way?

Though Scientology's highest leaders were supposedly suspicious of Nicole Kidman  from the start, efforts were made to bring her into the organization and turn her into an ally. She was accelerated through the ranks of Scientology doctrine, but never truly got on board, according to The Sydney Morning Herald . Efforts were also allegedly made to get her to denounce her father, who was a psychiatrist, a specific field of study that Scientologists have long raged against . These efforts failed, and likely backfired.

Additionally, in May of 1991, Time magazine ran a scathing exposé on Scientology as their cover story, calling it a "thriving cult of greed and power." This article, coupled with her own personal misgivings with how Scientology was affecting her life, reportedly encouraged Kidman to try and pull Tom Cruise away from the organization. It was a game of tug-of-war that lasted until the end of the decade. The pressure must have been enormous, even before the church allegedly began tapping the phones in the couple's Los Angeles home, according to Vanity Fair . As their differences became irreconcilable and conditions in the marriage grew increasingly intolerable, Cruise and Kidman announced their impending divorce on February 6, 2001 .

Isabella Cruise hinted at a big rift with Nicole Kidman

For years, Nicole Kidman's relationship with her children remained estranged. Isabella Cruise grew up and got married without inviting her mother, even though they were in the same city at the time, according to Page Six . Neither child attended their grandfather's funeral, the Daily Mail reported. In the another article, the Daily Mail said they referred to Katie Holmes as "Mom" starting in 2006, and seemingly didn't talk about their real mother... at all.

Former Scientologist and actor Leah Remini shared an anecdote from this time period in her new book (via Vulture ), about an incident immediately after the 2006 wedding of Tom Cruise to Holmes. Sharing a ride to the airport, Leah asked the kids about their mother, and if they still saw her a lot. Bella surprised Leah with the ferocity of her answer. "Not if I have a choice," said Bella, reportedly. "Our mom is a f**king SP." And just in case you need that translated, it means "Suppressive Person," which is a term the church defines as someone who "will goof up or vilify any effort to help anybody and particularly knife with violence anything calculated to make human beings more powerful or more intelligent." Think that sounds bad? The church's official definition also cites "Napoleon, Hitler, [and] the unrepentant killer and the drug lord" as examples of Suppressive Persons. Yikes.  

Co-parenting got rocky for Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise

The big issue with divorce is almost always, who gets the kids? Would someone take full custody? Would Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman happily co-parent their preteens? They did, for a time, according to the  Daily Mail , but as Kidman's fame rose and she took more demanding jobs, the kids spent more and more time with their father, seeing their mother less and less. They began to be home-schooled by Cruise's sisters, with a Scientology-focused educational regimen, and one summer went to a Scientology-focused summer camp instead of spending it with Kidman. By 2005, they were effectively living with Cruise full-time, and by choice.

Cruise and Kidman's kids are adults who "make their own decisions," Kidman told  Who in 2018. Though she hasn't spoken much about their decision to largely stay with their father while growing up, Kidman did say, "They have made choices to be Scientologists and as a mother, it's my job to love them. ... I know 150 percent that I would give up my life for my children because it's what my purpose is."

In August 2016,  it was reported that Nicole finally met her daughter's husband, nearly a year after the two married. As for Isabella, she denies there are problems now. "Of course we talk," she said, They're my parents." Her son Connor spoke similarly. "I don't care what people say. I know that me and mum are solid. I love her a lot. My family means everything."

Nicole Kidman married too young

It's clear that Nicole Kidman was madly in love with Tom Cruise. But she might not have exactly been ready to get married. The star was just 23 years old when she walked down the aisle, and she's spoken numerous times about how her age played into their split. This includes telling Marie Claire that marriage is "hard when you're young." She did, however, admit that she was "ready to give up anything for love, because ultimately, that is what you have."

Today, though, it seems like Kidman can't completely wrap her head around why she tied the knot at such a young age. In an interview with the UK's Red magazine (via People ), she admitted, "I was so young when I got married. I look back now and I'm like, 'What?'" She went on, "You look at Taylor Swift, I mean how old is she? She's 26. I had two kids by the time I was 27 and I'd been married for four years. But that's what I wanted."

Nicole Kidman's marriage outshined her talent

Time has proven that Nicole Kidman is a star in her own right — if only because divorce gave her time to shine. Though the actress is more recently known for her role in HBO's Big Little Lies, she won the majority of her four Golden Globes after splitting from Tom Cruise. The same thing goes for her Oscar and BAFTA award, both of which she nabbed for The Hours in 2002, and her Primetime Emmy Awards, which she scored for the HBO hit. Initially, though, her agents warned her that tying the knot would be detrimental to her career. As someone uninterested in fame, she went through with it anyway — and they weren't totally wrong. Kidman did feel held back by her marriage, but only because of her own insecurities surrounding Tom's fame.

"I felt I became a star only by association," she told Glamour in 2008, adding, "I didn't think [the early movies] were very good, which is why I would always cower in the background. I thought, I don't deserve to be here. We would go to the Oscars and I would think, I'm here to support him. I felt it was my job to put on a beautiful dress and be seen and not heard."

Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman's marriage ran its course

Sometimes when something is done, it's just done. You have to admit it, wave your white flag, and move on. That's just what happened with Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise's marriage. Though the pair were wildly in love — and still manage to avoid hurling insults in the press because of that very real, shared love — ten years down the line, things just weren't working.

In a 2011 interview with Marie Claire , Kidman opened up about the real reason behind her divorce with Cruise. "That was a great relationship," she said. "I think it ran its course." Still, the Hours star was utterly distraught in the aftermath. "I was really damaged and not sure whether [love and marriage] was ever going to happen again to me," she admitted.

Kidman ultimately threw herself into work and spent the next six years alone, but it's something she had to do in order to grow. "I had to find my own identity, and my own reason for being here, and it couldn't be because of another person," she told Glamour in 2008. Of course, Kieth Urban was the light at the end of that tunnel. The pair tied the knot in 2006.

Nicole Kidman would do it all over again

Just because Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise didn't work out doesn't mean their marriage was a failure. Kidman, at least, seemingly has no regrets. Rather, she really cherishes the time that she spent with the Top Gun star. In an interview with Elle (via E! News ), Kidman looked back fondly on the ill-fate union, even though she managed to find a "more evolved" love with Kieth Urban.

"I want to be really careful with that because I don't want to take away from 11 years with that man that were really important," she admitted. "Really, for our kids — they were amidst a lot of love. It wasn't bad. And now we're amidst a more evolved love."

Nicole also admitted that — despite the unfortunate outcome — she'd marry Tom again in a heartbeat. "[He] taught me an enormous amount — as a girl into a woman. Absolutely, I would do it again," she said, proving that not all failed marriages are actually a failure.

All three of Tom Cruise's marriages ended when wife was 33

Soon after news broke about Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes' plans to divorce , fans noted a weird coincidence. All of Cruise's three marriages broke up when his wife at the time was 33, and ended when she was 34.

Cruise's first wife was Mimi Rogers, who was 31 when she wed 24-year-old Cruise in May 1987 and 33 when they broke up in 1990.

Cruise then married Nicole Kidman, 23, in December of 1990, and then separated in 2001, when Kidman was 33.

Holmes, 28, and Cruise wed in 2006, seven months after daughter Suri was born. And when word came Friday that Holmes had filed for divorce, those with a sense of Cruise history noted that Holmes was also 33.

Divorces, in each case, came when the woman in question had turned 34 (or so we assume with Holmes, who will turn 34 in December).

The coincidence didn't go unnoticed on social media, where no weird fact is too small to escape notice.

"How weird is it that Tom Cruise's three failed marriages have all ended while the women were 34?" tweeted Karen D'Souza. Others tried to find a connection between the number 33 and Cruise's well-publicized Scientology faith.

And others had fun with a different numerical aspect of the Cruise-Holmes marriage. Wrote Adolf McGough, "Shoutout to Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise. Your marriage lasted 28.47 Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries marriages."

Nicole Kidman Felt Stanley Kubrick ‘Mined’ Her Marriage With Tom Cruise for Iconic Film

It has been 25 years since legendary director Stanley Kubrick's swansong Eyes Wide Shut was released. However, the lead actress of the film, Nicole Kidman , has not forgotten how the project seemingly caused irreversible damage to her and her then-husband Tom Cruise 's marriage. The 57-year-old actress reflected on the process of making the film with Kubrick and Cruise as her co-star in a conversation with the Los Angeles Times , revealing intimate details that were not previously known to the public. 

“When Tom and I first started with Stanley, it was at his home, and we didn’t even go over to the sets at Pinewood Studios,” she told the outlet, referring to a scene where Cruise and Kidman have an intimate talk while smoking in their bedroom. “Six, eight weeks passed, and we’re wondering, ‘Are we ever going to start?’ And we just wouldn’t start. We were getting comfortable with each other, comfortable enough to throw out ideas. For that scene, we improvised the beginning of it through the rehearsals.”

When asked if Kubrick was using her real marriage to Cruise to drive forward the characters in the film, Kidman remarked, “I suppose he was mining it. There were ideas he was interested in. He’d ask a lot of questions. But he had a strong sense of the story he was telling. I do remember him saying, ‘Triangles are hard. You have to tread carefully when it’s a triangle.’ Because one person could feel ganged up on. But he was aware of that and knew how to manage us."

“But there’s something about being a woman in that equation, too. And Stanley liked women. He had a different relationship with Tom. They worked more closely together on his character.” she further clarified. For those who may not know, the high-profile former couple of Hollywood were married from 1990 to 2001; Kubrick filmed his final feature film between 1996 and 1998.

Later on, in a 2017 interview with Deadline , Kidman expressed how grateful she was to have a 'slightly zen approach to things' during the lengthy shoot of Eyes Wide Shut . “Because I was married and I had my kids there. It wasn’t like I was rushing to get finished, to get somewhere else. I was there, with Stanley, and I didn’t care. Whatever,” she told the outlet. Unfortunately, just a few days after the screening of the film's final cut, Kubrick passed away from a heart attack at the age of 70 on March 7, 1999.

In February 2001, Cruise filed for divorce from Kidman, citing irreconcilable differences as reported by US Weekly ; in 2022, former Scientologist Mike Rinder made a scathing claim that the Scientology Church played an important role in separating the couple. According to the New York Post , when Kidman won the Academy Award for her role as Virginia Woolf in The Hours, she could hardly hold back her tears. “I was struggling with things in my personal life, yet my professional life was going so well,” she told author Dave Karger in his book 50 Oscar Nights , referring to her split with Cruise.
