Possibly the best gig I've ever had the pleasure of witnessing live. The guitars, the bass, the drums, the saxophone, the lights, the overall setting and the 'psychedelic' lightshow combining it all together adds to an unforgettable evening.

Not only that, but this ground-breaking indie-rock deliverer also played around two hours, non-stop, building up until the last two epic songs.

Let's talk about one of those: I was literally petrified during their performance of the soothing song Thinking Of A Place. Adam Granduciel gripped me with his euphony, all mixed with the bands grand performance and overall constant change yet stability. Every little tune that changes the song, hits you like a lovearrow, yet delivers a whole range of different emotional effects, ranging from excitement to love, from pain to deep pleasure and from melancholia to confidence.

If you ever get the chance, don't miss out on these boys, they're here to save our music industry.

Massey Hall Sat.night I went to show and really enjoyed it. He is a good singer and great guitarist. He played several hits and a cover song as well. These guys are seasoned performers and the audience were clapping and enjoying the show. I miss guitar being part of the music scene so the 6 member band, filled that void for me.

Great show and would recommend fans to see.

I saw future islands here recently here, from the moment they hit the stage the audience gave them a standing ovation and sang cheered and clapped the whole show. I was amazed at how the audience showed there love for this band...another must see band. They played hit after hit.

A really really good show. They are pretty flawless live. We saw Kurt Vile (a former member of The War on Drugs) last year and he has such a terrible stage presence that we actually walked out of the show (something I’ve never done before) so I was a little worried this would be a similar show but they proved within the first minute that it was not. So so good, go see them if you like to watch incredible musicians play.

US TOUR UPDATE

Hi all, just wanted to give a quick update about our US tour that begins in Austin on January 19th.

First off, we're disappointed to announce that due to the government of Ontario’s indoor capacity restrictions, our Toronto shows on February 5 and 6 at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre have unfortunately been cancelled. Automatic refunds will be issued to all ticket holders in the next 30 days.

We've always loved playing for you in Toronto and have had some of our most memorable nights as a band there - playing "like a hurricane" at Massey Hall in 2017, the power going out an hour before our show at Lee's Palace in 2014, playing two sweaty, sold out horseshoe Tavern shows, the massive Slave Ambient artwork/window display that the folks at Soundscapes made for us (that I still cherish). We're so disappointed to be doing this, but we promise we'll make it up to you in 2022 (and beyond). Wheels are already in motion as they say...

We've added a show in Pittsburgh (Feb 5) as well as a show in Cincinnati (Feb 6). Yay! Tickets for those are available on our website. Obviously, we're beyond excited for these additions.

We're also requesting that as many of you as possible wear a mask when you come see us play this tour - especially if you're in the first few (50) rows. I know we're all over masks but for one, it makes me more at ease cuz now I don't get self conscious (and dark) when I see y'all yawn out there but also because we want our fans, our crew and our band to stay healthy so we can honor the commitments we've made to every city on this tour. Seriously, we would really appreciate it.

Second, due to this latest Covid surge and our need to exist within the tightest possible tour bubble, there will be no support acts on this run. We know how excited all of the opening acts were for this tour and we sincerely appreciate them being so f'n understanding.

Lo Moon was scheduled to be with us through Atlanta. We met years ago when Charlie was asked to play on their wonderful and CLASSIC debut record,   Lo Moon . We became fast friends and they'll still be joining us as MAIN SUPPORT on our EU/UK tour in March and April. We're beyond excited to travel around with them. Their new song 'Dream Never Dies' is out now!

Caroline Kingsbury wrote me out of the blue on Instagram asking to open our tour when we announced it back in July. I had never heard of her but I listened to a few songs and I knew SHE NEEDED TO PLAY MADISON SQUARE GARDEN. Big songs, big voice. Great hooks. I loved it. Please check her out and support her when she comes through your town. I know that we'll be doing some shows together this year one way or another.

Our friend Rosali from Philly was going to play all the midwest shows with us since she has relocated to the rural calm of Michigan. Every one of her records is on heavy rotation at one point or another and her latest record,   No Medium   is a true stunner. She makes singing and writing songs sound easy and effortless. maybe it is...what a life. we love you Rosali! We're gonna miss playing   Birds of Paradise   and   Because the Night   with you every night :((((

We became instant friends with Toronto native Joseph Shabason when we opened for Destroyer in 2011 on the most epic 7 week tour I've ever been on -  6 months before Slave Ambient came out. Basically Chris Koltay was forcing us to go to Culvers to eat butter biscuits and Joseph was also DYING to go to Culvers So he ditched the comforts of the Destroyer tour bus and enjoyed some of the biscuits that Koltay had ordered "for the table." We've been close ever since. Honestly this guy's got a million great records to his name. We suggest you check them all out. He also played saxophone on the outro of "Eyes to the Wind."

Finally, when Shawn and I were mixing our record into some sort of strange mush back in late 2020 I remember hearing 3 songs on repeat coming from his kitchen. Having no luck with Shazam I asked his wife what I was listening to. It was rough mixes of what would become TOMI's   Sweet, Sweet Honey   EP and I fell in love with it immediately. I was really looking forward to hearing her sing these songs down the west coast but that'll have to wait until some other time!!

ok...wow, king of social media. thank you and we love you all. We can't wait to see you. It's been a long road. We're beyond excited. Take care of one another xoxo

The War on Drugs Kick Off Their North American Tour in Austin: Photos and Recap

The post The War on Drugs Kick Off Their North American Tour in Austin: Photos and Recap appeared first on Consequence .

The War on Drugs , led by frontman and founder Adam Granducial, has built their reputation on recorded music and live shows which incorporate an intense level of attention to musical detail. Soaring, rhythmic melodies and atmospheric instrumentals weave together 1980s synths with 1970s classic guitar licks, melding with lyrics to form whole musical cloth that makes you imagine at times being in a giant pile of floofy pillows, then raised to anthemic heights and floated gently down to a soft landing.

In late 2021, Granduciel completed a three-year effort to release a new album, I Don’t Live Here Anymore , achieving critical acclaim and being heralded as one of the best of the year — high praise for a band whose last effort nabbed the 2017 Grammy Award for Best Rock Album.

With COVID protocols firmly in place, The War on Drugs kicked off their “I Don’t Live Here Anymore” tour on Wednesday (January 19th) with the first of two sold-out shows at ACL Live in Austin, Texas.

Many fans were curious as to how changes in Granduciel’s personal life might reflect in his music and performance — and the outcome is that it’s all positive, with increased band collaboration and noticeable development in both lyrics and vocals. Granduciel was vocally stronger than he’s ever been and seemed relaxed onstage, surrounded by a plethora of pedals in a literal ring of light.

He mentioned that they were missing Anthony LaMarca, and included LaMarca’s song “Reconciliation Part 2” in the set. Though much of the band remains the same (Dave Hartley, Charlie Hall, Jon Natchez and Robbie Bennett), Eliza Hardy-Jones joined on keyboards/synths and guitar, and long-time tour manager Craig McQuiston contributed guitar on “Pressure.”

The band played their new album all the way through — including the first live performances of “Wasted” and “Rings Around My Father’s Eyes” — along with past favorites. The band seriously elevated the performances from the recordings (and probably from previous concerts), with extended instrumentals and guitar solos, receiving thunderous applause and multiple thanks from the stage from Granduciel.

Many of the tracks — especially “Harmonia’s Dream” and “Under the Pressure” — received an extended treatment, witht he live versions building into walls of instrumental sound around Granduciel’s shredding guitar solos. Visually, the show was similarly amazing, with the stage bathed in moving lights. The combination served to highlight the collective performance of the band and the intrinsic emotion of the music, taking the audience experience to the next level.

It’s hard to imagine a musical experience that’s more enveloping and uplifting than what The War On Drugs brought to the stage at this performance. This experience of live music, shared with like-minded people, is what we’ve missed during the long COVID night. There’s a reason that this band is selling out venues; this is not only the experience we want to break our long musical fast, but the one we need right now.

The “I Don’t Live Here Anymore” tour continues over the coming months; tickets are available via Ticketmaster . The War on Drugs will play a second gig tonight (January 20th) at ACL Live.

The War On Drugs share two Bruce Springsteen covers as Amazon Music exclusives

Announced today, The War On Drugs shared two Springsteen covers, “Dry Lightning” and “Highway 29” for Amazon Music. Both songs were recorded in Los Angeles, and are available exclusively on Amazon’s platform.

“I chose two songs from ‘Ghost of Tom Joad’ for a number of reasons, one of them being he was my age when he made that record, and that was kind of the record that I remember learning about Bruce beyond what I was hearing on classic rock radio,” says War On Drugs frontman Adam Granduciel. A good 30 years from that point in Granduciel’s life, he met Springsteen himself. And “The Boss” told him that Ghost  was the record he was most proud of.

“His songs are uniquely American,” says Granduciel. “But I think that the stories are fairly universal. Ya know, families trying to make it work, and people trying to get up in the morning and go to work and have a full life. I think that’s why [Springsteen] has been embraced for so long all over the world.”

Watch a short behind-the-scenes video of the band recording “Dry Lightning” and “Highway 29” below. And stream the two songs on Amazon Music .

It looks like Nicki Minaj won’t be returning to Amsterdam for the city’s second date on her Pink Friday 2 World Tour.

On Friday, Dutch promoter Mojo announced on its website that Minaj’s June 2 show at Amsterdam’s Ziggo Dome had been canceled. “Due to the events of last week, the Nicki Minaj show on Sunday, 2nd June at Ziggo Dome, Amsterdam will no longer be taking place,” the company’s statement reads. “Tickets will be refunded at the point of sale.”

Minaj’s representatives did not immediately respond to Variety ‘s request for comment on the canceled Amsterdam date.

Since the incident on May 25, Minaj performed a rescheduled Manchester show, in addition to dates in Birmingham, London and Glasgow. She will play in Paris, France this weekend, before continuing to Germany and Poland.
