Radiohead Offshoot Band The Smile Announce 2022 North American Tour

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood’s Radiohead side project the Smile have announced dates for their first American tour. It kicks off Nov. 14 at Providence, Rhode Island’s Veteran’s Memorial Auditorium, and wraps up Dec. 21 at Los Angeles’ Shine Auditorium.

The Smile, which also features drummer Tom Skinner, released their debut LP, A Light For Attracting Attention, on May 22. The group came together during the global pandemic when Yorke was unable to complete his solo tour, and he suddenly found himself with a lot of free time.

“The album reflects Yorke’s lockdown anxieties with clever musical backdrops that never obscure the songs,” Rolling Stone ‘s Kory Grow wrote in a review of the album. “As the record uncoils, you can practically hear how the songs become therapy for the musicians as they play around and work through their Covid cabin fever.”

They began an extensive European tour on May 16 in Zagreb, Croatia. The show is built around tunes from A Light For Attracting Attention , but they’ve also played Yorke’s 2009 solo song “Feeling Pulled Apart by Horses” in addition to the new composition “Friend of a Friend.” They also did Joe Jackson’s 1979 New Wave classic “It’s Different for Girls” during a livestream show in January.

Radiohead, meanwhile, have been completely inactive since wrapping up their two-year A Moon Shaped Pool at Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Center on August 1, 2018. When Rolling Stone spoke to guitarist Ed O’Brien in 2020, he said they had no clear timeline for their next project. “I think that’s the beauty of what we do,” he said. “We’re not trying to fulfill contracts or maintain a lifestyle that requires us to make albums. We want to do it because we’re inspired to do it and that should always be the case. You should be inspired to work with people and make music rather than feel obligated.”

Here are the dates for the Smile’s North American tour.

November 14 – Providence, RI @ Veterans Memorial Auditorium November 16 – Boston, MA @ Roadrunner November 18 – Brooklyn, NY @ Kings Theatre November 20 – New York, NY @ Hammerstein November 23 – Washington, DC @ The Anthem November 25 – Montreal, QC @ MTELUS November 26 – Toronto, ON @ Massey Hall November 28 – Detroit, MI @ Masonic Temple Theatre – November 29 – Milwaukee, WI @ Riverside Theater December 1 – Chicago, IL @ Riviera Theatre December 3 – Nashville, TN @ Ryman Auditorium December 4 – Atlanta, GA @ The Eastern December 6 – New Orleans, LA @ Orpheum Theatre December 8 – Dallas, TX @ The Factory in Deep Ellum December 10 – Denver, CO @ Mission Ballroom December 14 – Portland, OR @ Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall December 16 – Seattle, WA @ WaMu Theater December 18 – San Francisco, CA @ Bill Graham Civic Auditorium December 21 – Los Angeles, CA @ Shrine Auditorium

the smile tour dates

The Smile have announced their first-ever tour of North America for November and December 2022, in support of their debut album ‘A Light For Attracting Attention’.

  • READ MORE:  The Smile live in London: Radiohead side project prove they’re human after all

The band, which features Radiohead ‘s Thom Yorke and Johnny Greenwood , will begin their debut tour across the continent in Providence, Rhode Island. The tour will then take them across the US and Canada, including two New York dates at Brooklyn’s Kings Theatre and the city’s Hammerstein Ballroom.

A pre-sale for the tour will begin this Thursday (June 16) from 10am local time, with the general sale following the next day at the same local time. Find tickets here , with full details for the run available from Radiohead’s  W.A.S.T.E. website.

The shows will mark Yorke and Greenwood’s first shows in North America since August 2018, when Radiohead wrapped up their world tour in support of 2016’s ‘A Moon Shaped Pool’ . Indeed, the most recent Radiohead show to date was the final stop of that tour, when they played The Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.

After making their virtual premiere at last year’s Glastonbury ‘Live From Worthy Farm’ event, The Smile made their in-person live debut  in January, performing across three nights at London’s Magazine. Last month began an extensive UK and European tour for the band, which recently saw them perform at Primavera Sound. The Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas praised the band’s performance at the festival, deeming it “the best show [he’s] seen in years”.

The Smile released their debut album, ‘A Light For Attracting Attention’ , last month. In a four-star review ,  NME  described the album as “showcasing a melodic, more energetic and free-flowing iteration of the Yorke-Greenwood partnership”.

“In cutting some new shapes, this supergroup have been set loose to make some of the most arresting and satisfying music of their careers,” the review read.

The Smile reveal North American tour dates

Thom yorke, johnny greenwood, and tom skinner’s supergroup will play their first-ever stateside shows this winter..

the smile tour dates

Exactly a month ago saw the release of The Smile 's debut album A Light For Attracting Attention . Expectations were high for the project, which brought together Radiohead's Thom Yorke and Johnny Greenwood with Sons of Kemet drummer Tom Skinner (Nigel Godrich, Radiohead's longtime producer, went behind the boards for this project as well.) Still, the LP managed to be a crackling success even in the context of the members' storied careers, and later this year, North American audiences will get the chance to see its songs performed live in concert.

The shows begin on November 14 and run for 19 dates in the United States and Canada. They will follow The Smile's ongoing tour of Europe and the United Kingdom, which began in May and runs until July. Tickets for the USA and Canada shows go on sale to the general public on June 17.

More The Smile

Could Radiohead ’s Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood be planning their first-ever visit to Australia with their band, The Smile ?

Taking to social media overnight, the Radiohead frontman shared a video of himself performing the King Of Limbs classic, Bloom , solo on piano live from Electric Lady Studios (the full video was uploaded to YouTube in 2019).

In the caption, he asked fans to subscribe to the W.A.S.T.E. mailing list – a service that offers news about Radiohead, The Smile, and the band members’ solo projects – for news that concerns fans on this side of the world.

“Subscribe to w.a.s.t.e for some new news coming shortly, mostly concerning Australasia and Japan,” the Karma Police singer wrote. You can subscribe to W.A.S.T.E. here .

Radiohead haven’t been on tour since August 2018, so the chance of the English rockers coming to Australia seems unlikely. The Smile, however, last played a show in March and are set to tour Europe from 7 June to 30 August, playing a bunch of festivals along the way. This leaves their touring schedule wide open for Australasia and Japan.

The Smile, comprising Yorke, Greenwood and drummer  Tom Skinner  from jazz outfit  Sons Of Kemet, formed in 2020 and made their surprise debut with a live-streamed performance at Glastonbury Festival in 2021. That year, they dropped their debut album, A Light For Attracting Attention , produced by Radiohead’s longtime collaborator Nigel Godrich .

In January, The Smile released their second album, Wall Of Eyes . To celebrate the release, fans enjoyed a full-album playback of Wall Of Eyes in cinemas . Sydney was treated to two screenings on Tuesday, 23 January, at the Golden Age Cinema.

In a live review of Radiohead’s most recent show in Australia – at Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena in November 2012 – The Music ’s Bryget Chrisfield wrote:

“It's the perfectly executed song segues that totally do us in:  There There  (such wounded guitar sounds!) into  Karma Police  (cue deafening crowd sing-along that temporarily summarises our collective consciousness: “ And for a minute there / I lost myself / I lost myself ”) and a segment of (Björk's)  Unravel  into  Everything In Its Right Place , for which a Tibetan flag adorns Yorke's electric piano. The two encores equal half the amount of songs presented in the main set, but it's still not long enough.”

Retiring Lexi Thompson doesn't want a 'pity party,' but says life on tour is lonely and 'words hurt'

L ANCASTER, Pa. — On Tuesday morning, Lexi Thompson released a statement announcing her retirement —at least from a full-time LPGA schedule. Hours later, in her pre-tournament press conference at the 2024 U.S. Women's Open, she did her best to maintain composure as she reflected not just on her career, but on her making her 18th appearance in the national championship this week at Lancaster Country Club. Twice, that composure deserted her, and it started when she was asked which struggles she felt most proud of overcoming.

"That's a great question," she said. "I think honestly just staying true to myself. Being out here can be a lot. It can be lonely."

At this point, she began to cry, and tried to shake it off with a smile.

"Sorry if I get emotional. I said I wasn't going to."

Thompson may only be 29 years old, but she's been playing competitive professional golf since she was 15 and has the equivalent of what would be a full career in many other sports under her belt before her 30th birthday. What seemed clear, as she explained her decision, is that the lifestyle has worn on her.

"I just think, especially with what's happened in golf … a lot of people don't realize a lot of what we go through as a professional athlete," she said. "I'll be the last one to say throw me a pity party. That's the last thing I want. We're doing what we love. We're trying the best every single day. You know, we're not perfect. We're humans. Words hurt. It's hard to overcome sometimes.

"I think we deserve a lot more credit than we get," she added.

Thompson, an 11-time winner on tour, pointed that out professional golf is all she's known; not only has she spent almost half her life playing an LPGA schedule, but the work that came before her breakthrough accounts for many more years. Nor was this a rash decision. Thompson said she's been considering retirement for years, but that until now, it never felt like the right time.

Thompson alluded to broader mental-health struggles of pro golfers a few times and admitted that she too has struggled over the years. In 2018, she took a break from golf after "struggling emotionally" for a year and a half, and the pressures of life under the spotlight and the attendant mental difficulties were foremost on her mind Tuesday.

"I don't think there's somebody out here that hasn't," she said. "It's just a matter of how well you hide it, which is very sad."

Lexi Thompson celebrates her 2014 Kraft Nabisco Championship with fans.

David Cannon

She didn't specify the moment she made her retirement decision, but it's clear that it has been months in the works, and that the U.S. Open—where she started her career—was the appropriate place to make the announcement.

The second time she began to cry came when discussing the ANA Inspiration (now Chevron Championship) in 2017, when a brutal four-shot penalty levied on the final day took her from a leading position to second place. Despite the heartbreak, she stayed after to sign autographs, and through her tears she described her mentality that day.

"That was a huge moment in my career, not a great one," said Thompson, who won her lone major in the 2014 Kraft Nabisco. "I look at it as I grew a fan base that I never thought I would have in that moment. It's an unfortunate circumstance, but to be there and to hear chants of my name on 17 coming down the stretch and just to be able to sign all the autographs and go through that moment, it was like the hardest moment of my career was a blessing, because it was just I learned so much and I gained fans that I never thought I would have."

Thompson will finish out the year—her main goal is to make another Solheim Cup team—and didn't know how much she'd play in the future. But after 14 years as one of the biggest names in women's golf, you get the sense that she doesn't just want to step back, but she needs to.

Lexi Thompson hits a drive during the 2024 Seri Pak Championship.

Ms. Pat shares the secret to being a top-tier comedian

  • By Malik Brown
  • May 30, 2024

Ms. Pat has been professionally making people laugh for years, but she’s been genuinely putting a smile on their faces for all of her life. The performer knew she wanted to step into the comedic lane since it came so naturally for her, and now she’s on tour and in season four of BET’s “The Ms. Pat Show.”

Ms. Pat spoke with rolling out about her career journey, some of the people she’s admired and studied over the years, and the newest season of her show.

How important is it to continue to make people laugh in 2024?

I think it’s very special in this world. We all need a laugh, especially [with] somebody like myself who’s not going to edit my stuff to make you happy. That’s just putting comedy where comedy used to be back in the day. I’m not going to satisfy you, I’m going to talk to the audience as a whole and we’re all going to laugh together. I always tell people ‘Hold tight,’ I’m going to take you on a negro field trip.”

How has the comedy landscape changed over the years?

A lot, especially with social media. You can put out a viral video and you can sell a million tickets, and you only have 12 minutes to tape. For a comedian who’s been doing it for 21 years, it’s kind of hard because if you don’t have the talent to work social media but you have the talent to stand on stage for an hour, a social media person will outsell you.

What interested you in doing comedy?

I’ve always been a crap talker. I’m that person who if you want somebody cussed out, I’ll go tell the next person exactly what you want them to say, and I’ll smile and drink with them. My friends thought I was being funny, but I was being funny I was just being myself. When I realized I could make money from it, and you didn’t need a criminal history background check, I was like this is what I’m going to do for the rest of my life.

What is the best thing about going on tour?

The best part for me is that it’s one show a night. That’s one and a half hours I have to work and I can take my bra and wig off and get in my bed. I’m 52 years old, and by 6:30 [p.m.] I’m sleepy. I don’t have to do two to three shows a night, just that one show and I’m back at the hotel.

Who are some comedians you look up to and some you admire?

I admire Kevin Hart, Dave Chappelle, Chris Rock, Wanda Sykes, D.L. Hughley, DeRay Davis … I admire a lot of people. The people who I studied when I got in the game were Richard Pryor, Bill Cosby, and Bernie Mac because I’m a storyteller. I needed to learn how to tell the stories in a funny way so people would laugh when I told them I got shot in the back of the head. I learned that from Richard Pryor, Bill Cosby, and Bernie Mac.

What is the key to being a great comedian?

Honesty. I think when you’re honest and truthful about yourself, so many people out there can relate. A lot of people don’t like to dig into the past because they don’t want you to know the past. But when you can talk about what you’re going through in life, somebody in the audience is going through the same thing. I talk about having a gay daughter. Everybody doesn’t have a gay daughter, but everyone knows somebody that’s gay. I always tell people to just be honest because I don’t make up anything.
