The unexpectedly potent screen chemistry developed between the very unique Mr. Brynner and the very English Ms. Kerr on the set of Walter Lang's enduring musical success The King And I was repeated three years later for this very different project, a heady melodrama set in 1956 Budapest with assorted types and nationalities trying to cross the border into Austria but encountering a Communist Major (Brynner) on the lookout for dissidents... and wouldn't you just know it, there happens to be one in their party and he's played by a debuting Jason Robards!

This is one of many very solid pictures Yul appeared in which I remember fondly from my childhood (others include Escape From Zahrain, Taras Bulba, Kings Of…

The Journey is adapted and bowdlerized from the same Guy de Maupassant story as Val Lewton’s antiwar Mademoiselle Fifi . The producers obviously tried to cash in on rekindling the East–West magic of Yul and Deborah from of The King & I , and filmgoers in 1959 must have been confused when they got a complex Cold War morality play.

I am just now realizing how little I have seen of Yul Brynner's filmography. While I won't say this was his strongest performances of what I have seen. I will say him and Deborah Kerr both give really great performances. The story itself is a bit dry and the pacing is a bt slow but overall it's a good movie and considering it was only 2 bucks to rent on Amazon I enjoyed it.

Jason Robards just never looked young.

I was pleasantly taken aback by how unromantic this was. I came in thinking it would be a pretty standard old school Hollywood romance, but instead I got a more tragic and reflective film.

It's got an interesting setup, some great performances and solid directing, but it never justifies its plodding pace or dull drama. That said, I really wanna try some lángos now.

Lowbacca

Review by Lowbacca ★★

For the initial premise, a group of people trying to get out of Hungary, including one Hungarian freedom fighter, and out from under Soviet control, this was a lot less interesting than it seemed to be at the start. Unfortunately, it failed to develop interesting characters and so the slow pace it goes at becomes a bit more tedious.

Yul Brenner's Russian commander is a mostly interesting character and he gives a strong performance, although I think the interactions between him and Deborah Kerr's Lady Ashmore were weak. And her character in general was, I think, rather poorly handled. She's not interesting, and even less interesting is her fellow Brit, Hugh Deverill, who takes on a mild and conciliatory sort…

I think that this movie is really great. This probably contains my favorite Yul Brynner performance. He is warm, intelligent, dangerous, and a great physical presence. He and Kerr have awesome chemisty and this movie is far superior and very different to the King and I in my opinion. I do think Kerr is always awesome when she isn't saddled with the stuffy prim roles that she could play in her sleep and she gets a lot to do in this. European locations are great looking. I think that this is the only movie that Jason Robards has made an impression on me. The entire cast is very good.

The Journey is a 1959 drama film directed by Anatole Litvak, starring Deborah Kerr, Yul Brynner, and Jason Robards. The film is set in Hungary during the late 1940s, following the end of World War II, and revolves around a group of Western travelers who are trying to cross the country on a train. The passengers are forced to confront the reality of the ongoing war, as well as their own prejudices, fears, and desires.

Kerr plays Diana Ashmore, a British widow who is traveling with her young son after the death of her husband. Brynner plays Major Surov, a Russian officer who is escorting a Hungarian general back to Budapest. Robards plays a cynical American journalist named Hugh Deverill, who is traveling with his photographer girlfriend Joan (played by Eileen Heckart). The other passengers on the train include a wealthy British businessman, an American couple on their honeymoon, and a Hungarian woman traveling with her young daughter.

As the train makes its way across the country, the passengers are confronted with a series of increasingly dangerous situations. They witness the aftermath of a bombing by Soviet forces, and shortly afterward they are ambushed by Hungarian rebels. The rebels, led by the charismatic Kovacs (played by Robert Morley), take the passengers hostage and demand a ransom from the Soviet authorities.

As the situation grows more tense, the passengers are forced to confront their own prejudices and fears. Diana Ashmore and Major Surov develop a tentative romance, despite their initial distrust and hostility towards each other. Hugh Deverill is initially cynical and detached, but he gradually becomes more involved in the situation and begins to empathize with the rebels. The Hungarian woman and her daughter provide a humanizing element to the story as well, as they become increasingly vulnerable to the violence and chaos around them.

Despite the high stakes, the film is not simply an action thriller. Rather, it is a character-driven drama that explores the psychological and emotional toll of war and oppression. The film is notable for its nuanced and sympathetic portrayal of the Hungarian rebel fighters, who are shown as flawed but ultimately sympathetic human beings.

The performances in the film are uniformly excellent. Kerr brings a subtle sense of vulnerability and melancholy to her role, while Brynner is imposing and commanding as the Russian officer. Robards is particularly impressive as the jaded journalist who is forced to confront his own cynicism and detachment. The film is also visually stunning, with beautifully composed shots of the Hungarian countryside and a haunting, understated score.

The Journey is ultimately a sobering and thought-provoking film that remains relevant today. It touches on themes of war, nationalism, and the human cost of political conflict, and it raises important questions about the ethics of violence and the nature of empathy. The film is a testament to the power of cinema to explore complex social and psychological issues, and it remains a potent reminder of the enduring consequences of war and oppression.

The Journey is a 1959 drama with a runtime of 2 hours and 6 minutes. It has received mostly positive reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.8.

preview for 'Black Barbie' — Full Trailer

Watch the Exclusive Trailer for Shondaland’s Newest Documentary, ‘Black Barbie’

Get an inside look at how the first Black Barbie came to be, in a film that debuts on Netflix on Juneteenth.

In the first look at Shondaland’s newest documentary, U.S. Representative Maxine Waters adds further context to Rhimes’ salient words, reminding us that it wasn’t that long ago that there were no Black dolls. It took 21 years from Barbie’s conception in 1959 for the first official Black Barbie to be introduced to the world in 1980. Soon, in 15 days, the story behind how it happened will be widely seen for the first time.

Black Barbie hits Netflix on June 19, Juneteenth, when fans and curious viewers will be able to take a bite of history with Shondaland’s second doc (following 2020’s Dance Dreams: Hot Chocolate Nutcracker , also on Netflix). “It has been thrilling to be part of the smart, funny, honest documentary that is Black Barbie ,” says Rhimes, who, in addition to executive producing Black Barbie , is a marvelous Barbie doll herself.

Written and directed by Lagueria Davis , Black Barbie details and celebrates the journey of how the first Black Barbie came to be. “I’m excited for people to know that there is a Black Barbie, and that she has a story,” Davis tells Shondaland. “We want to give her all the flowers, and all the women in our film their flowers.”

That story is largely told through the first-person perspectives of three Black women who worked at Mattel during the iconic doll’s incubation: Kitty Black Perkins, Stacey McBride-Irby, and Davis’ Aunt Beulah Mae Mitchell. “I’m excited for people to know their names, a part of their story, and this part of history,” says Davis.

Aaliyah Williams, one of the film’s producers, tells Shondaland the documentary is “really a love letter to Black women in this beautiful way, and women overall during this time.” Furthermore, the documentary illustrates Barbie’s lasting impact on self-image, beauty, identity, and imagination, featuring commentary from historians and scholars, as well as beloved familiar faces (Maxine Waters! Gabourey Sidibe!).

the poster for 'black barbie,' coming soon from shondaland and netflix

The documentary originally premiered as a work-in-progress project at South by Southwest in 2023 before Rhimes and her Shondaland Creative Partner, Betsy Beers, picked it up. “Collaborating with these talented filmmakers to introduce their passion project to our global Shondaland audience was an opportunity we could not pass up,” Rhimes tells Shondaland. “ Black Barbie provides the hallmarks of storytelling that make a Shondaland project great — it provides a window into another world and holds up a mirror to our childhood experiences. We were so proud to contribute our Shondaland reach and access to help the filmmakers enhance Black Barbie with new content while keeping its brilliant original vision.”

Following the June 13 release of part two of Bridgerton , Black Barbie is sure to be the next social event of the season. “I think people are just in need of something inspiring and positive,” Williams says, “so I’m excited for them to get that from this.”

In addition to the film being a celebratory and mesmerizing watch, it also prompts what can be a beautiful and meaningful community discussion. “I want people to know that they can watch this with their family,” Williams says. “There’s some fun surprises as we talk to young people about how they play with their dolls, what they think about imaginative play, and what they think about Barbie on-screen.”

Mark your calendars: The film debuts on Netflix on Wednesday, June 19. “After you’ve been out in the streets at the [Juneteenth] parade,” Williams continues, “bring all the cousins back home, get your popcorn, gather around the couch, watch this, and have a good time.”

Oh, and one more thing: “If [people] think the song and the trailer is fire, just wait until the [film] credits expire,” Davis hints. “Don’t stop the movie just yet. Keep it rolling.”

Jennifer Aniston Becomes Emotional While Detailing Her Time on Friends

Jennifer aniston shed several happy tears while remembering her time on friends thirty years after the show's premiere, adding that she and the cast found "a family forever.".

Jennifer Aniston  knows that  Friends  will always be there for her.

Even two decades after the show wrapped, the Emmy-winner shared that her time on the sitcom—and more importantly the relationships she created with costars  Courtney Cox ,  Lisa Kudrow ,  Matt LeBlanc ,  David Schwimmer  and the late  Matthew Perry —have left an indelible mark on her.

"Oh god, don't make me cry," Jennifer said through tears as  Quinta Brunson  asked her about the show during  Variety 's Actors on Actors series published June 6 , before adding that they were "happy tears."

She also expressed disbelief that this fall it'll be 30 years since the NBC sitcom debuted, joking, "I'm turning 30, what a coincidence."

But despite reaching such a major milestone, the years really feel like they've flown by as, for Jennifer, the memories from the early days are so clear.

"It's so strange to even think that it's 30-years-old," the 55-year remarked. "I remember the day that it was gonna premiere. On television! On NBC!"

As for how she spent that day? With her friends, of course.

"It definitely flew out of control," she laughed, "and that was unfortunate"

But not unfortunate at all? "The excitement we had," she said, "it feels like yesterday."

The  Morning Show  actress also shared some behind the scenes tidbits about the long-running sitcom, revealing that Lisa in particular "hated when the audience laughed" during her lines, adding, "She'd be like, 'Ugh, I'm not done! It's not that funny!'"

But most importantly, she is touched by how the show has remained such a cultural touchpoint through the years,  and how it brought her her chosen family .

"The fact that it's had this long, wonderful life and it still means a lot to people is one of the greatest gifts I think all five of us—all six of us—we never could imagine," she said. "We see each other. I talked on FaceTime with Court last night for an hour, and Lisa and the boys, and we just have a really—it's a family forever."

Black actors are finally getting opportunities to play classic roles onstage

From audra mcdonald as mama rose in an upcoming ‘gypsy’ to wendell pierce as willy loman in ‘death of salesman,’ black actors are getting an opportunity to play classic roles. it’s long overdue..

Audra McDonald at the Screen Actors Guild Awards in February.

Audra McDonald is no stranger to making history.

She has won an unmatched six Tony Awards, including one for her unforgettable portrayal of Bess in “The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess,” which began life at Cambridge’s American Repertory Theater before transferring to Broadway.

Now, at 53, McDonald is poised to write a significant new chapter in her extraordinary career. Starting in November, she will become the first Black actress to star on Broadway in one of the most monumental roles in all of musical theater: Mama Rose, in “Gypsy.”

That chapter will be a prominent part of a larger story that is unfolding not just on Broadway stages but in regional theaters as well. To wit: Black actors are increasingly tackling leading roles in some of the most high-profile works the theater has to offer. They are inhabiting characters who have traditionally — in some cases only — been portrayed by white actors.

While racially inclusive casting has been building for years, it has gained fresh urgency as the American theater strives for a “racial reckoning’' within its industry, spurred by the murder of George Floyd in May 2020 by a white police officer in Minneapolis, and by the growth of the Black Lives Matter movement. McDonald was one of the founders of Black Theatre United, whose mission is to “inspire reform and combat systemic racism within the theatre community and throughout the nation.”

Consider a few of the Broadway “firsts” that occurred in 2022 alone:

Blake DeLong (left) and Wendell Pierce in "Death of a Salesman."

* Wendell Pierce (detective Bunk on “The Wire”) became the first Black actor to portray Willy Loman in “Death of a Salesman” on Broadway — more than seven decades after Arthur Miller’s drama premiered.

In fact, the entire Loman family was portrayed by Black actors for the first time on Broadway in that 2022 production: Sharon D. Clarke (”Caroline, or Change”) as Willy’s wife, Linda; Khris Davis as their son, Biff; McKinley Belcher III as his younger brother, Happy; and André De Shields as Ben, Willy’s financially successful brother.

* Brittney Johnson became the first Black actress to play Glinda full time in the blockbuster musical “Wicked.” (Cynthia Erivo, whose stunning turn as Celie in “The Color Purple’' is one of the greatest stage performances I’ve ever seen, is playing Elphaba in the film adaptation of “Wicked,” which that is slated for release later this year.)

Tiffani Barbour (seated), Salome B. Smith (standing), and members of the company of "1776."

* A revival of “1776,” which originally premiered in 1969, opened on Broadway after debuting at the ART. The production featured a multiracial cast whose members identify as female, transgender, or nonbinary. The key roles of John Adams and Benjamin Franklin were played by Crystal Lucas-Perry and Patrena Murray, both Black, both making their Broadway debuts.

As with Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “Hamilton,’’ which features Black and Latino actors as the Founding Fathers, the effect is to move people of color from the margins to the center of US history.

As for the here and now, the Pulitzer-winning musical “Next to Normal” is running at Cambridge’s Central Square Theater through June 30, in a co-production with the Front Porch Arts Collective. But this time with a difference: The family that goes on a wrenching journey is a Black one, including chief protagonist Diana (Sheree Marcelle), a mother grappling with depression and bipolar disorder and unappeasable grief over a personal loss. Diana’s husband, daughter, and son are also played by Black performers.

When Black actors headline important works of theater, they can fill in what was before only a partial picture at best of the social context surrounding such works. An audience’s experience of these plays and musicals changes in ways that can deepen our understanding of the works.

We are asked — sometimes compelled — to think about social context, i.e., the world outside the confines of the play. With “Death of a Salesman,” for instance, we were prompted to consider the challenges a Black man would face in navigating that world in, say, 1949, when the production of “Death of a Salesman” was set.

So, too, with the sexism, rejection, and indifference an ambitious Black stage mother would have faced as she traveled with her daughters to one vaudeville house after another in the 1920s and 1930s, when “Gypsy” takes place.

Rose is a psychologically complex figure whose bumpy journey climaxes with “Rose’s Turn,” one of the most shattering solos ever written. The character has exerted a magnetic hold on many Broadway legends over the years, particularly as they’ve hit middle age. What Hamlet or Othello or King Lear is for dramatic actors, Rose is to musical theater performers.

Patti LuPone as Mama Rose, in "Gypsy," in 2008.

Ethel Merman (who else?) originated the role on Broadway, in 1959. The redoubtable Angela Lansbury starred as Rose in the 1974 revival. Next, in 1989, came Tyne Daly, delivering a performance of molten intensity (I saw that “Gypsy” when it came to Boston.). Then Bernadette Peters took a turn in 2003, followed by Patti LuPone (2008), who won a Tony Award. Soon it will be McDonald’s turn, and you have to figure she will be in the Tony conversation once again.

Today, at a time when theater companies are trying to attract new audiences to counter the drop-off in their accustomed older patrons, some of whom are still leery about attending live performances, headlining performers of color sends a message of welcome to young Black theater fans, and to not-yet theater fans.

Alexia Khadime, a Black actress who portrayed Elphaba in “Wicked,” spoke last year to The New York Times about the impact of her own casting in “Wicked”5 and that of Halle Bailey as Ariel in 2023′s live-action movie adaptation of “The Little Mermaid.”

Halle Bailey as Ariel in the Disney remake of "The Little Mermaid."

“To be honest, I never thought I’d play [Elphaba] in the first place,” Khadime said. “It’s another reminder that representation matters.” When young Black girls saw Bailey in trailers for “The Little Mermaid,” Khadime said, their reaction was immediate: “She looks like me.”

For Black playwrights and actors, numerous doors are now open, and they are walking through them with confidence. Six of the last eight Pulitzer Prizes for Drama have been won by Black writers. The work of Black playwrights like Lynn Nottage, Suzan-Lori Parks, Jeremy O. Harris, Jackie Sibblies Drury, Jocelyn Bioh, Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, and Tarell Alvin McCraney is a major part of today’s theater landscape. McDonald’s star power helped get “Ohio State Murders” to Broadway, but Adrienne Kennedy’s wrenching drama about the violence spawned by racism closed early.

Audra McDonald in "Ohio State Murders."

In 2015, McDonald went to the Williamstown Theatre Festival to tackle another role usually played by white performers: Josie, the daughter of a tenant farmer, in Eugene O’Neill’s “A Moon for the Misbegotten.”

When I interviewed her before that production, McDonald said that she had never done O’Neill before, and that her thinking when considering any role was governed by “one requirement.”

“I want something that’s going to challenge me, either stretch muscles to a degree I’ve never stretched, or muscles that I’ve never stretched at all,” she said. “I’m someone who’s always willing to jump off the diving board and say, ‘Whoa, I hope there’s water down there.’ I don’t have a problem with failure as long as I gave it 100 percent. I want to try everything.”

Mama Rose might qualify as “everything” all by herself.

Millie Bobby Brown's Fantasy Movie Is Now One Of The Most Popular Netflix Films Ever

I'm very worried about barry keoghan's beatles movie casting after last year's hit movie, does bad boys: ride or die have a post-credits scene.

Screen Rant is thrilled to exclusively present the brand-new trailer for the director's cut of the cult classic documentary Barbie Nation: An Unauthorized Tour , which will be released in celebration of the movie's 25th anniversary. Emmy-nominated filmmaker Susan Stern takes a look at the history of Barbie and its popularity with children and adult collectors. Stern delves into the surprisingly gritty world of Barbie collectors, including the destruction of Barbies in strange and sometimes disturbing ways.

Stern also does a deep dive into the life of the creator of Barbie , Ruth Handler, who saw an opening in the market for an adult doll instead of the standard baby doll after watching her daughter play with adult paper dolls. Handler's own journey is as tumultuous as Barbie's, as she goes from being the savior of Mattel to eventually being pushed out. The enhanced director's cut of Barbie Nation: An Unauthorized Tour will debut online on June 27.

More About Barbie Nation: An Unauthorized Tour

Screen Rant's exclusive new trailer for Barbie Nation: An Unauthorized Tour shows the different people who collect Barbies and what they do with their dolls. Some simply display them, while others create elaborate fantasy lives that they enact with their dolls. Others destroy their Barbies in strange ways. Barbie Nation: An Unauthorized Tour also talks to protestors who believe Barbies are connected to the decision to get breast implants as well as drag queens who have loved Barbies their entire lives.

Barbies have had a massive influence on culture since they first hit shelves in 1959, with children around the world playing with and collecting Barbies for over 60 years now. The doll is still massively popular, even as controversies and competitors have challenged the Barbie. The upcoming Greta Gerwig Barbie movie is a testament to the perseverance of Barbie's popularity.

Barbies have captured people's imaginations for more than six decades, giving children the opportunity to play out their imaginations of what life can be as they grow up and adults the chance to recapture the wonders of their youth. Barbie Nation: An Unauthorized Tour takes a look at the darker, grittier side of this toy, its history, and the following it has acquired over the years. Barbies continue to rise in popularity as other toys rise and fall into obscurity, and Barbie Nation: An Unauthorized Tour will give audiences insight into all the different ways this doll has been embraced by the world.

Barbie Nation: An Unauthorized Tour will be released on June 27 for the 25th Anniversary as a special Director’s Cut.
