food tours in bangkok

The sights, sounds, smells and tastes of Bangkok are a mix you can’t find anywhere else in the world. It’s a place that’ll set all your senses on fire (literally – the food is mega spicy in Thailand!) That’s why this country is home to some of the world’s best food tours in Bangkok.

For me, it’s the contradictions and contrasts that make Bangkok such an amazing place to visit. I could go from discovering something yummy in a 7-Eleven to munching on a cheap £1 plate of pad Thai on the streets to a sumptuous fine-dining feast with the best views of the city all in a few hours. There aren’t not many places where you can do all of that in a day.

Add in beautiful temples, a bustling nightlife that can rival any and the smiliest people you’ll ever meet and you got the perfect ingredients for one of my favourite cities.

And as you’ll quickly learn from the moment you arrive here, the food really is incredible. You really can’t beat Thai food straight from the source.

Planning a trip to Bangkok? Then check out my guides to the best hotels in Bangkok , what to eat when you’re in the city, and how to celebrate Songkran water festival in Thailand. These guides are packed full of advice and information.

Foodie experiences in Bangkok

From a Bangkok Midnight Food Tour to a trip to the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market, there’s an intense mix of flavors in Thailand – spicy, sweet, salty, sour.

Influences have flooded in from all corners of the globe making Bangkok one of the best dining destinations in the world. It’s just so diverse and I love all the food on offer here – even the offal.

Also, it’s generally very cheap to eat in Bangkok, so you can get a lot of bang for your buck. The street food isn’t just cheap, it’s quality too. Think £2 for a bowl of Michelin-starred noodles (yes, this is actually a thing here!)

Personally, I think the best way of getting to know the city is on a food tour. Then you get to see all the city has to offer while trying some local delicacies along the way. And let me say this: you’re in for a treat because there are some amazing food tours to choose from.

If you want to eat your way through the city while getting to know the history and the culture, then these are the best Bangkok food tours for you. Go on any of these tours below and you’re in for an amazing time!

Best Food Tours in Bangkok

1. cooking with poo – cooking class in bangkok.

market food tour thailand

It’s not often you can say this but I loved cooking with Poo!

Poo has become a bit of a legend in Bangkok. She started from very small beginnings in the backstreets of one of the poorer districts of Bangkok. Learning to cook from her mum, people started flocking to her for her delicious food. These days, almost from nothing, she has built one of the best cooking schools in the city.

This cooking class starts off at 8:30am in the Klong Toey wet market. This is where you’ll pick up your ingredients to cook with for the day. What I loved about this was you actually learned about all the different ingredients straight from the source. Also, it really gives you a connection to the local community too.

From the market we then made our way to Poo’s cooking school. In the small intimate setting of her home, we learned how to make a spicy beef salad, pad Thai and a delicious green curry. It’s easy to say this, but it was genuinely some of the best food I had in Thailand. Everything was so simple to make and so delicious too. It really teaches you about Thai food and flavours. Oh, and every day there’s a different menu too so you can keep on coming back to learn new dishes!

One of the best things about cooking with Poo is a lot of the money goes back into the local community, so you’re actually helping the people living around Poo too.

I really do think this is one of the best Bangkok food tours and I can’t recommend it enough!

Cost: £36/$47 per person. You can find out more about this food tour here .

2. Expique’s Evening Food & Tuk Tuk Adventure

expique food tour

This is another Thailand food tour you just have to do while you’re in the capital.

On this food tour you’ll explore the city in your own little tuk tuk (don’t worry, you have a driver too.) This means you can get to those little places that no one else knows about.

What I loved about this tour was we really went off the beaten path. Our first stop was at a tiny food market followed by a tasty hot pot on the streets surrounded by locals. From them on it was a flavour odyssey as we tried anything and everything under city’s lights.

On this Bangkok street food tour you’ll be like a local visiting the most known landmarks like the Old Town temples and the flower markets all with one major difference – it’s without the crowds that you find on usual tours.

Also, our guide Lek was brilliant at explaining everything we were eating. We even got to try a few interesting things like bugs and tripe. It really shows you what the local delicacies are in Bangkok.

I lost count of how many stops and dishes we tried on this food tour. I think we tried well over 10 different dishes so it really is amazing value for money. Also, your tuk tuk driver will drop you off at your hotel at night afterwards too. Bonus! This really is a Bangkok tuk tuk night food tour like no other.

Expique also offer some of their own cooking courses too that I’ve only heard great things about. These are cooking classes with a twist so well worth checking out.

Cost: £57/$74per adult, £28/$37per child (aged 5-11). You can find out more about this food tour here .

3. Local’s Favorite Dishes: Secret Food Tour of Bangkok

thailand food tours

Experience a locals’ favorite dishes on this delicious Bangkok street food tour. Dine with others from out of town and discover food stalls, favorite hidden spots, and experience the cultural history and rich foods the area has to offer.

On this tour you get to journey through different parts of Bangkok. Also, make sure you’re hungry as you’ll eat at 6 different places in the city to experience the true taste of Thailand.

The tour will start off with fresh mouthwatering papaya salad that is slightly spicy and will make your taste buds dance. On the next stop, you’re able to experience all the sweet fruit the country has to offer.

Ever tried fishball noodle soup? It’s now one of my favorites (I really mean that!) Be prepared to eat this dish next to a gorgeous temple while appreciating the colorful and vibrant Chinatown.

Sit down here for a nice Thai-style dim sum soup and end your day at the local pub to taste the local beer and share your experiences with others. So much fun!

Cost: £34/$44 per adult, £30/$38 per 13-17-year-old, £26/$33 per 3-12-year-old. You can find out more about this food tour here .

4. The Ultimate Bangkok Bicycle & Boat Tour

tours of bangkok

I wanted to go for an all-day adventure so I joined the Ultimate Bangkok Bicycle & Boat Tour. Going out of the city, this explores areas far from typical tourist traps.

You’ll enjoy visual cultural contrasts of Muslim and Buddhism, classic and modern, rural and urban.

We began in Chinatown where for about an hour we wandered through pathways with markets, temples, and a vibrant street life.

After a 30 km train ride, we arrived in eastern Bangkok and rode for about 2.5 hours on the paths through neighborhoods and klongs, again noting the strong contrasts of lifestyles along the way.

Next we enjoyed a meal at a local restaurant and a temple before riding on a tail boat in the canals. This is such a good way of getting around and seeing a lot of Bangkok.

A quick bike ride ended at the BTS station and then we rode through urban Bangkok back to the tour beginning, enjoying the unique neighborhoods along the way.

Cost: £55/$70 per adult. You can find out more about this food tour here .

5. Old Town Bangkok Food Tour

street food tour bankok

Join this tour for a true culinary adventure in Bangkok’s Old Town, one of the best places to eat in Bangkok. In just a few hours you’ll gain all the knowledge you need on one of Thailand’s local culinary scenes.

At these local spots you’ll get the chance to try things like BBQ-pork buns, roasted duck, red curry, and beyond. But not only will you get to try these dishes, but you’ll also go behind the scenes for a personal, hands-on learning experience. You’ll discover a range of tastes in one of Bangkok’s oldest neighborhood.

Sign up for a half-day tour with only a few other visitors. Your Bangkok food guide will introduce you to some of Bangkok’s best chefs who will share their stories and answer any foodie questions you have.

Explore Bangkok’s tastiest neighborhood through abundant samples, street foods, and even fine dining options. You’ll feel like a local in no time!

I think that this 3.5-hour tour is a foodie tourist’s dream. You can pick your favorite spot out of five different locations where you’ll taste over eight delicious culinary delights. But save some room for walking. In between eating you’ll explore hidden neighborhood gems, ancient temples, and some of the local’s favorite spots.

Ever had a Thai green custard bun or the royal recipe for green curry beef and chicken? How about roti? Or Kao-Nha-Ped, roasted duck with rice? Among the many exotic flavors you’ll sample are Som Tam (papaya salad), curry on egg, crisped catfish, coconut ice cream, and iced lemon tea.

Plus as a bonus, you’ll get to try secret dishes available only for the group. It’s a great experience.

Cost: £33/$42 per adult, £26/$33 per child, infants free. You can find out more about this food tour here .

6. Bangkok Chinatown 3.5-Hour Night Food Tour

chinatown-bangkok

Do you want a cultural experience that will leave you dreaming of coming back for more? Look no further than the Bangkok Chinatown 3.5-Hour Night Food Tour. During these few incredible hours you will experience Chinatown like never before.

In the 200-year-old Chinatown district, you will experience a variety of foods to satisfy your taste buds. This cuisine ranges from street food vendors to fine dining restaurants. The food will range from herbal teas to sweet treats to satisfying noodle soups. There is no doubt there’s something for everyone on this tour!

In between the 7 delicious food stops on this Bangkok street food tour, you’ll be getting an up close and personal view of the neighborhood. You’ll meet the locals, hear their stories, and develop a deeper understanding of the Chinese culture through religious and symbolic landmarks. For me this is one of the best tours of Bangkok.

Cost: £35/$45 per adult, £28/$36 per child, infants free. You can find out more about this food tour here .

7. Damnoen Saduak Floating Market Bangkok Tour at Ratchaburi

floating-marketing-bangkok

Although Venice is famous for its canals and gondolas, Thailand offers the greatest example of a floating market in Damnoen Saduak Floating Market Bangkok Tour at Ratchaburi. This remnant of yesteryear completely charmed me and ensnared my senses with its vibrant colors and enticing scents.

The tour begins at Gardner’s House, where you will learn the process of making coconut sugar. Learning how to husk the coconuts and extract the milk is a fascinating lesson, and at the end it’s possible that you’ll get to taste some of the final product.

After that, it’s straight to the floating market where hundreds of different types of boats bob together on the water. All sorts of things are available to purchase, including a variety of snacks and foods, clothes and fabric, jewelry, and much, much more.

The floating market at Ratchaburi is a great place to view the friendliness and kindness of local Thai people on full display. They are quite welcoming and eager to barter and banter with travelers, so feel free to immerse yourself in the experience!

Cost: £17/$22 per person. You can find out more about this food tour here .

8. Bangkok Dinner River Cruise

bangkok-boat-tour

The Chao Phraya Dinner Cruise by Grand Pearl Cruise is a must for anyone who wants to experience the romance of Bangkok. Offering unforgettable views of the city, an exquisite buffet of Thai delicacies, and live music and dance, this experience is sure to delight even the most experienced traveler.

The cruise departs from the River City Pier and takes passengers upriver, past the illuminated visages of the Temple of Dawn, Grand Palace, and Temple of the Golden Buddha. Upon return to the pier, a delightful repast is served, including local and international dishes that are seasoned to perfection.

This dinner cruise by the Grand Pearl is truly an experience like no other, and one that is sure to leave one with amazing memories of Bangkok. What a wonderful way to experience this amazing city!

Awesome Bangkok Street Food Tour

By Author Daryl and Mindi Hirsch

Are you wondering what to eat in Bangkok? Follow along as we eat awesome Thai food during an action-filled Bangkok street food tour with A Chef’s Tour.

Thai Beef Noodle Soup Vendor in Bangkok

Bangkok is the best street food city in the world. It’s also one of the best food cities in the world.

We don’t make this statement lightly after eating on the streets of cities like Delhi , Hanoi and Osaka . These days, it’s difficult to think of a global city without a vibrant street food scene.

Discover our picks for the best food cities in the world .

But Bangkok is in its own league when it comes to the sheer quantity and quality of tasty food sold by street food vendors throughout the city at all hours of the day and night. A veritable army sells edible wares like fried chicken, slow cooked pork and grilled salt-crusted fish on sidewalks, in markets, in hawker centers and in shacks.

Not limited to Chinatown and backpacker haven Khao San Road, Bangkok food vendors are literally everywhere in the Asian mega-city. Visitors will have no problem finding Thai street food wherever and whenever they feel like eating from gritty night markets to luxury malls like Central World .

Salt Grilled Fish Pla Tabtim

During our two-week visit to Bangkok, we ate street food on busy streets, on secluded alleys, under overpasses and at floating markets. Our challenge wasn’t finding good street food; rather, it was knowing where to find the best Bangkok street food.

Pro Tip Check out a Bangkok floating market for a different ‘street’ food experience. The floating market of Damnoen Saduak is particularly popular with travelers.

We could have happily filled our bellies with ridiculously cheap Pad Thai and skewered Juicy Sour Isaan Sausage sold by friendly vendors near our apartment, and we did do that on many nights. But, as obsessive food travelers, we wanted to dig deeper and eat with locals.

That’s how we ended up taking a Bangkok street food tour with A Chef’s Tour .

Bangkok Street Food Tour

Chef Nutthasetth Samerwomg on A Chefs Tour

Sometimes it’s best to leave things to the experts and that’s exactly what we did during our Bangkok street food tour. In this case, the capable hands belonged to Chef Nutthasetth Samerwomg from A Chef’s Tour .

Samerwomg is more than a typical tour guide. He’s also an experienced chef and restauranteur in addition to having his official Bangkok street food tour guide license. Plus he’s a cool cat who digs food.

Klong Boat Ride in Bangkok

Within moments of meeting Samerwomg at the Palladium shopping mall, we were speeding down Khlong Saen Saeb in a klong (river bus). We had skipped breakfast and were ready to eat!

Pro Tip Come hungry to any Bangkok food tour. You will want to taste a lot of different Thai food favorites during your food-focused Bangkok tour.

Thai Food Highlights

Kanom Pakkaad on Bangkok Street Food Tour

Popular around the world, Thai food is a global phenomenon best experienced at the source. Though most first-timers to Bangkok dip their toes into the city’s street food pool by eating standard dishes like Pad Thai and Banana Roti, these popular street foods represent a tiny fraction of the variety readily available on the streets of Bangkok.

Discover our Thai food favorites .

A Chef’s Tour took us off the beaten path to the city’s longest-running food market located in a hidden old town neighborhood. During the tour, Samerwomg regaled us with stories about the history and culture of Thai cuisine while keeping us well fed and hydrated.

A Chef's Tour Guide

Talking a tour with a local Thai food expert enabled us to dig deep into the heart of the city’s street food scene while eating our way through one of the best markets in Bangkok. We sampled a seemingly endless parade of local dishes until we couldn’t take another bite.

These were our favorite dishes:

Thai Beef Noodle Soup (Kuay Teaw Nua)

Thai Beef Noodle Soup in Bangkok

Starting the food portion of our Bangkok walking tour with a bang, Samerwomg introduced us to the wonderful world of Thai beef noodle soup. He did this at a fourth generation Hokkien soup stand situated near the oldest operating Bangkok market with nary a tourist in sight.

Discover more great noodle dishes from around the world .

Thai Beef Noodle Soup with Organs in Bangkok

Daryl was in his happy place as he slurped a bowl loaded with aromatic broth, brisket, organ meat and silky noodles. Not for the faint of heart, his bowl included any and any and every edible body part including liver, tripe and tongue. While this may sound gross, the offals were artfully cooked until tender without a hint of rubberiness.

Discover more of the best soups in the world .

Thai Beef Noodle Soup with Brisket in Bangkok

Mindi was equally happy slurping her organ-free bowl of soup filled with slow-cooked brisket and wide rice noodles. Smells from galangal and star anise wafted from the bowl as she slurped the soup with gusto.

We both combined condiments like fish sauce, chili pickle and sugar in little dipping bowls before adding them to our bowls. If the tour had ended here, we would have been satisfied. However, soup was just the beginning of our moveable Thai feast.

Crispy Thai Omelet (Khanom Buuang Yuon)

Making Khanom Buang Yuon in Bangkok

Part of our fun of eating crispy Thai pancakes was watching the street vendor prepare the local dish beneath a Bangkok overpass. Far from fancy, this kitchen had all necessary equipment including a charcoal stove.

The vendor molded the crepe/omelet in a wok until just set. She then formed it into a clam-like shell before filling it with fresh accouterments. Samerwomg shared that this particular vendor learned to cook the Thai dish from her grandmother.

Khanom Buang Yuon on Bangkok Street Food Tour

The flavorful dish reminded us of crispy Banh Xeo pancakes that we ate in Da Nang , though this one was loaded with peanuts, bean sprouts, shrimp, cucumber salad, onions, chilies and ginger. Surprisingly, Thai people eat Khanom Buuang Yuon with a spoon despite the sandwich-like similarity.

Stir Fried Radish Cakes (Kanom Pakaadd)

Kanom Pakkaad in Bangkok

We had never eaten radish cakes stirred fried with vegetables before but were game to give the local favorite a try. In many ways, the dish had similar characteristics to Pad Tai. However, the dish’s stir-fried radish cakes added a chewy, satisfying yet crunchy texture

After giving our chopsticks a workout, we headed to the Nang Loeng Market . This non-touristic Thai market dates back to 1900 and hosts a variety of vendors selling both savory and sweet Thai food options.

Shrimp Paste Fried Rice Salad (Khao Kluk Kapi)

Khao Kluk Kapi Street Food Vendor in Bangkok

Samerwomg warned us that not all foreigners like shrimp paste. Little did he know that we adore the funky Asian food staple.

We enjoyed the mix of sweet, spicy and sour flavors in the market’s shrimp paste fried rice salad. Beyond shrimp paste and rice, this salad’s ingredients, meant to be mixed together, included vegetables, mango, fried shrimp and chilies.

Coconut Custard (Kanom Tuy)

Kanum Tuy on Bangkok Street Food Tour

Samerwomg next introduced us to his favorite Thai desserts starting with fragrant coconut custard treats known as Kanom Tuy. Though we’re not big coconut fans, we were enamored with the soothing custard spooned from tiny ceramic bowls into our mouths.

However, Kanom Tuy wasn’t our favorite dessert of the tasty Bangkok tour. That honor goes to Thong Yip.

Egg Yolk Dessert (Thong Yip)

Khun Pa Joy in Bangkok Thailand

We first tried Thong Yip in the market but Samerwomg had a sly trick up his sleeve. After leaving the market, he led us through Bangkok’s winding back streets to meet Khun Pa (Aunt) Joy in the manufactory where she creates yellow treats all day long.

Making Thong Yip in Bangkok

Joy starts baking at 3 am every morning to feed hungry locals looking for dessert after eating lunch at the nearby market. Though her physical work takes many steps, she was kind enough to show us the ancient process of bathing ultra orange egg yolks in a sugary solution and molding them into tasty, sweet, creamy spheres.

Dragon Fruit (Pitaya)

Exotic Fruit on Bangkok Street Food Tour

Several hours and many calories later, Samerwomg escorted us on the boat back to central Bangkok before making a gracious departure. Not only did we feel too full to eat dinner, but we also felt ready to explore Bangkok as experienced street food eaters.

Tour Logistics

Bangkok Back Street Locals

Our four-hour Bangkok Old Market Hidden Street Eats tour started with a scenic boat ride and ended when we were too full to eat another bite. Limited to eight people, this Bangkok tour features a variety of Thai food that can be modified for vegetarians.

Guests receive detailed instructions after finalizing bookings on the company’s user-friendly website. In our case, Chef Nutth was easy to spot at the assigned meeting point since he was wearing a t-shirt emblazoned with the company logo.

The tour cost was $59 per person at the time of our Bangkok street food tour. Be sure to check the A Chef’s Tour website for updated costs and details since they can change at any time.

Plan to walk a good bit and eat a lot during this Bangkok food tour. Depending on the season, plan to sweat too. It gets hot in Thailand after all.

20 Yummy and Exotic Thai Street Food You Should Try

Walking through the streets of any major Thai city, you will see plenty of carts selling deliciously smelling treats and meals. There are so many street food options in Thai that sometimes it can be overwhelming for people just to get started. If you aren't sure what to try first, here is a list of some of our favorite dishes that are easily found at street stalls throughout Thailand and some tips for eating street food safely.

1. Pad Thai (Thai-Style Fried Noodles)

Internationally famous and available on every street corner, Pad Thai is a delicious option to start your street food journey. The perfect balance of spicy and sweet, this stir-fried noodle dish is often made with shrimp or chicken and a combination of chilies, palm sugar, tamarind, and lime juice, with egg noodles and some fried peanuts on top.

2. Pad See Ew (Flat Noodles Stir-Fried with Soy Sauce)

Made with wide rice noodles that are stir-fried with soy sauce, meat, and broccoli or cabbage, Pad See Eiw is a very hearty and delicious Thai comfort food. This dish is typically not served spicy, which is perfect for travelers who prefer milder cuisine. For people who like a little more of a kick, dried chili flakes or vinegar can be easily added.

3. Poh Pia Tod (Spring Rolls)

Spring rolls are always a reliable snack in Thailand and can be found pretty easily in most markets. Spring rolls can be made with a variety of fillings, including meat, vegetables, and rice noodles. They are often either deep fried or served fresh and covered in chili sauce. Spring rolls are often served in a plastic bag and are super easy to eat on the go.

4. Kai Jeow (Thai Omelette)

Kai Jeow is a simple dish but it is a great way to get some energy in the morning before an early start to a tour. Kai Jeow is typically served over rice with some sweet chili sauce. You can also have vegetables added to your omelet by asking for Kai Jeow Pak.

5. Som Tam (Green Papaya Salad)

This very popular and tasty Thai snack originates in northern Thailand but is now available all over the country. Usually, the dish contains a mixture of shredded green papaya with some tomatoes, carrots, peanuts, string beans, garlic, fish sauce, and chilies.

Som Tam is a must-try due to its delicious balance of sour and spicy. It's the perfect snack to get before or after any meal.

6. Gai Tod (Thai Fried Chicken)

Although Gai Tod looks just like any ordinary fried chicken that can be bought in the west, many visitors are surprised by just how good it tastes. Dipped in a mixture of shallots and oil, Gai Tod has an incredible light and fluffy batter without any of the grease that is common in western fast food fried chicken. Gai Tod is a Thai street food fusion classic.

7. Guay Tiew (Noodle Soup)

This is a very popular dish amongst locals and can be any type of noodle soup. It is often made with chicken, beef, or pork and either rice noodles or egg noodles. Some vendors may even add meatballs or wontons to give it some extra flare. Like American mashed potatoes and gravy, Guay tiew is an everyday dish that is served in many homes.

8. Pad Kra Pao (Thai Basil Chicken/Pork)

Pad Kra Pao is usually made with minced chicken or pork that is stir-fried with basil and chilies. Then the mixture is served over white rice. While Pad Kra Pao is a popular Thai dish, the flavors of the dish are very strong. Thai basil has a harsh peppery flavor and this dish typically calls for a lot of chilis.

If you aren't sure that you will enjoy the strong flavors of this dish, you can always ask the vendor to make it only a little spicy.

9. Kluay Tod (Deep-Fried Bananas)

Kluay Tod are small deep-fried bananas which are deliciously crunchy on the outside but warm and creamy on the inside. They are easy to eat on the go and make a great quick snack or dessert. They are also quite popular with children.

10. Khao Neeo Mamuang (Mango Sticky Rice)

This is an authentic tasting Thai dessert. It is made of glutinous rice, fresh coconut milk, and a ripe mango. The flavors are incredibly tasty and fresh. If you arrive in Thailand during the peak mango season, which is from April to May, be sure to try one of these desserts from a street vendor - you won't regret it.

11. Thai Coconut Ice Cream

This is a refreshing street food and the best treat when you are walking at midday with the fierce sun above your head. Instead of being made from dairy ingredients, like Western ice creams are, the coconut ice cream in Thailand doesn't contain anything like that. The dish is made with full coconut milk, coconut water, palm sugar, and white sugar to provide an ice cream texture. Then the scooped ice cream balls are served in a coconut shell with roasted nuts on top.

12. Ma Laeng Tod (Fried Insects)

We're sure you have heard of or watched videos, probably on YouTube, of fried insect street food. It's an adventurous experience to return home having done and that's not the only reason to be encouraged to do so. Give it a try! It actually tastes good. The insect choices are abundant, such as worms, grasshoppers, crickets, and scorpions. They are all grilled with salt, pepper, chilies, and some kaffir lime.

13. Banana Roti (Banana Pancake)

This is a hugely popular sweet street food in Thailand. It's a crispy fried pancake with banana slices inside it served with a condensed milk dressing on top. Just one bite will make you fall in love with this sweet, crispy, and crunchy street treat.

14. Tod Mun Pla (Thai Fish Cake)

You can easily find fish cakes being sold in almost every snack street in Thailand. The fish cake is deep-fried and comprises fish mixed with lime leaves, Thai basil, and long beans. It is usually served with some spicy, savory, and sweet Thai dipping sauce.

15. Moo Ping (Grilled Pork Skewers)

Commonly seen in night markets and food streets, moo ping is an absolutely must-try street food in Thailand. You will not only see pork grilled at each vendor's stall but also many other types of grilled meat and protein, such as chicken, fish, and beef. Every vendor makes his/her marinade a little differently but they are all somewhat sweet, savory, and garlicky.

16. Sai Krok Isan (Isan Sour Sausage)

Sai krok Isan is a fermented sausage originating from the northeastern provinces in Thailand. Its meat filling is made from pork and rice. The street vendors usually grill and serve the sausages with bird's-eye chilies, raw cabbage, and sliced ginger.

17. Khanom Buang (Thai Crepes)

Basically, khanom buang is a crispy pancake with a sweet filling. The crispy crepe is made of rice flour mixed with mung bean flour and cocoa powder, which serves as a delicious crunchy case to contain the creamy filling. The cream is made of sugar and egg yolk, and the topping can be strands of egg, shrimp, or pork, giving it different flavors depending on whether it is sweet or savory.

18. Sai Oua (Northern Thai Sausage)

Sai oua often looks like a long, curled piece of sausage meat on street vendors' stalls. It looks red-brown on the outside when it's grilled and, after you cut it into bite-sized pieces, you will see its light pinkish color inside. The filling is usually made of pork and a variety of intense fragrant spices and herbs, such as lemongrass, kaffir lime, and galangal.

19. Hoi Tod (Oyster Omelet)

An irresistible street food in Thailand, oyster omelet is made with crispy fried oysters dipped in rice flour and egg batter. Fried batter and egg are served alongside the dish. The texture is both very crispy and slightly soft, with a slithery component between the crisp edges, the eggs, and the oysters. With the added touch of fish sauce, the taste is unbelievably fantastic.

20. Pla Pao (Grilled Fish)

When you smell one of these grilled fish along any street in Thailand, you won't be able to walk away from it - that's how good they are. The fish is first stuffed with fresh lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, and sometimes basil, and is then coated in a thick layer of salt to give flavor to the fish and also to protect it from being overcooked. When eating the fish, peel off the crusted skin and dig into the juicy meat, which is soaked in flagrant spicy flavors.

What Makes Thai Street Food Special?

Often served from a simple cart surrounded by plastic stools, Thai street stalls don't offer an elegant restaurant experience. However, what Thai street food vendors do offer is great food from a cook who has spent years mastering one dish for an incredibly cheap price.

There's a reason why you will see lines of locals and foreigners at certain stalls and that's due to the convenience and also the flavor that street food vendors are able to provide. They don't waste any energy or money on extra staff or the ambiance of their facility, thus allowing them to offer the lowest prices for quality food.

Because of the low prices and snack-sized options, grabbing street food for dinner gives travelers the opportunity to try many different dishes for an affordable price. It's the cheapest and most efficient way to try some classic Thai cuisine.

Is Street Food Safe to Eat in Thailand?

Although in the eyes of many foreigners, roadside stalls with hanging meats can look like a bad idea, most street stalls in Thailand serve clean and safe food. Competition between street stalls is very high and vendors depend on returning customers and their good reputation.

Another comforting aspect of Thai street food is that in Thailand the vendor will cook the food right in front of you. Not only can you get a glimpse of the magic behind the food, but you also have the security of knowing that they aren't cutting corners in their cooking.

If you are still nervous about trying street food in Thailand, one of the best ways you can ensure the safety of your meal is to try the most popular and crowded stalls. The locals also like stalls that serve safe food with fresh ingredients.

Tips for Trying Street Food in Thailand

1. Markets are a great place to start looking for street food and to find some of the most popular stalls.

2. Go where the locals go because no one knows how to find better food than the people who live in the area.

3. To try and find the stalls that offer the safest food, it's a good idea to observe them make a few dishes for other customers to see their methods and to find out how they store their ingredients.

4. Street food meals are very inexpensive, so you should try and bring some small change in Thai Baht. Vendors are often unable to break large notes.

5. Street vendors usually have an English menu or a picture menu to help visitors order food. If you aren't sure what to get you can always ask to see it.

6. If you have food allergies, it is important to bring a food allergy card that says what you are allergic to in Thai and English.

7. Orders are customizable and if you ask the cook not to include something, they will happily take it out of your order.

What a brilliant night we had on the Bangkok Midnight food tour by tuk tuk. Such well planned itinerary and a great and exciting way to get from place to place. We visited 3 restaurants along the way as well as tasting some fruit from the local market and dessert from a street food vendor. The tour also offers a cultural experience to see the 24 hour flower market. Our guide Yiwah was great fun! The rooftop bar was a wow moment at the end of the tour. Getting around by tuk tuk was so fun and showed Bangkok in a different light. It was also great to get dropped off at the hotel at the end of the night. We really were full but the end of the evening which starts at 7pm and lasts until around midnight. Highlight of our Bangkok experience.

street food tour in thailand

In any new city I visit, one of the first things I like to do is go on a food tour. It’s a great way to learn the local food scene and usually some history and culture along the way. This was one of the best I’ve ever been on! First of all, the logistics ran so smoothly with Ron, our guide, making sure every dish arrived on time and the tuk-tuk was there to meet us just as we were walking out of each place. The tour itself was incredible! Everything was so authentic but at the same time gave us a sense that we were getting the best version of each dish. The Thai food we had been eating until now paled in comparison to what we had on the tour. I love how they also incorporated some non-food sites as well - a trip to the flower market was such a nice touche. I’ve been on these tours enough to know - the guide really makes or breaks the experience and Ron was amazing. Funny and laid back and personable but also unbelievably knowledgeable, not just sticking to the prewritten script. There wasn’t a single question he didn’t know an in-depth answer to but somehow also knew how to keep things brief and interesting. I feel like I got an entire Thai education in one night! Unlike other tours with tiny samples of the food, the portions here are huge so come hungry. All in all a perfect first night for me and my husband in Bangkok.

With our western upbringing we were a little nervous about experiencing street food - how safe is it? This trip allayed any fears and prejudices we may have had. Our guide, Chanya, was amazing, friendly and informative, explaining the history behind all the food we were to sample and the food was sublime. Each stop bough new delights and amazing tastes and textures. An important word of warning don’t eat anything before this trip, there is plenty of food to sate even the largest appetite. It’s not just food on the trip, although when we did the trip we had to miss out the flower market due to what can only be described as a down pour of biblical proportions – ponchos were provided to protect us from the worse of the rain. Riding on the tuk-tuk was fun and the return to the hotel at the end was a bonus as the booking description said it was specified hotels only and our hotel was a bit out of the way. If you want to experience the best of Thai cuisine then this tout is a absolute must, it’s converted us to the delights of street food.

I almost didn't book this tour since it is quite expensive for a family of four. I went on a friend's recommendation and it was worth every Bhatt! We toured with our 15 and 12 year old. The booking online is effortless and the follow up email with directions were clear and easy to follow. Tried out so many meals and places I would never have ventured to or had the time to visit (some locations have an excessive wait time that is taken care of with the tour). Wonderful night views of the city and it included a visit to the flower market! The kids just loved the tuktuk! A must do for adventurous eaters 😊 our guide Mod was fantastic! A wonderful host for the evening! Recommend the kids have a restful afternoon as the tour is long. I do not recommend this if your kids are picky eaters as it will be a wasted effort.

We did this tuk tuk food tour as a family and we highly recommend it. Our guide Chanya was super friendly and took real good care of us. The best part about this tour is that you go around to the best food joints in BKK on tuk tuk. Also, places that have long queues you get an express entry as part of the tour. For example, you get to visit Thip Samai which is the home of the best Pad Thai (also right next to Ran Jay Fai's joint, from Netlfix Street Food Documentary!). It's a 4 hour tour and you get to eat almost 11 to 12 foods.

The entire experience was perfect, right from online bookings to the directions of the meeting point, everything went on smoothly. Our guide was Nokk and her positive energy was contagious. She was so considerate of everyone's requirements and shes such an efficient multi-tasker. She noted down likes / dislikes , cooking preparations , and portion sizes. She then coordinated with all the restaurant staff, thereby ensuring we did not waste anytime waiting. Most places we had visited already had piping hot food plated for us on arrival.

The thing i liked most about this tour was the comprehensive and efficient itinerary. We covered every major type of dish as we hopped from spot to spot by Tuk Tuk. From Tom Sak to Mango Sticky rice, Phad thai to Kway Teow, The aromatic food was bursting with flavor and was quite hygienic i must add. Nokk patiently explained the socio-cultural relevance of each dish and how it was prepared. What makes it even better is how well historic and cultural aspects of Thailand's heritage was integrated into the trip during the visit to the flower market. Further, walking within each area helped build up an appetite again, before moving on to the next food spot.

The tuk tuk drivers deserve a special mention here as they were all so hospitable, yet so entertaining. We we promptly dropped to our Hotel lobby after our last meal. The tour concluded at around 12.30 - 1 am ( a good 1 hour more than scheduled), but that happens when you're busy making new friends and creating memories thanks to Bangkok food tours!

Food was excellent. Got the drunken noodles. My partner got Pad Thai. He is a true Minnesotan of Norwegian heritage and ordered his food with spice level 2. Consequently I had left over pad Thai for lunch the next day because it was too spicy for him. Worked out great for me. Service was quick, we ordered take out and went next door to pick up some other groceries. Food was ready when we returned. Will be making more visits in the future.

Jay's Kitchen is an awesome find!! My daughter went to Thailand on a study-abroad program and was eager to find a Thai restaurant to go to on her birthday and to remember the food she ate overseas. We were all very happy to taste fresh, flavorful Thai food that varied on the level of spiciness based on what we requested. I did a "3" which was in the middle of spiciness and my dinner had the right level of heat to it. My daughter ordered a "4" since she is used to spicy food. Again, it was right on the mark for what she hoped for. In addition to the meals we ordered, we took one to go - a green curry. The curry had so many layers of flavor. It reheated so well - it was like we were eating it right in the restaurant. The portions are very generous. In fact, we all had leftovers that we brought home to enjoy the next day for 2 more meals. So - for us - a dinner platter ended up being 3 meals. That was quite the deal! To finish it off, we had a couple of bubble teas. These were a little bit different than what we typically have had at other bubble tea places. The boba had a differ texture to it and the drink had the ice pulverized into it - so it was a different texture than a tea (more of smoothie texture). That being said, it was refreshing and a nice way to end the meal. We will definitely be returning to Jay's Kitchen! It is so nice to have a Thai restaurant close to home and not travel into the city.

Since this is MN for Gods sake, people here think Buffalo hot sauce for wings is hot! Time and time again when I order Chinese around here and beg for 5 star heat means nothing, like ordering Buffalo wings, they're not hot Minnesotans! Jays I ordered 5 star Catfish and oh boy!! It was a true 5 star heat! Tears in eyes(not sure if it was tears of joy or heat but I had tears)! Fresh Thai food and the heat to match the flavor! This place is good! Will be coming back for more true five star heat and really good Thai food!

What an awesome find out in Small Town Food Stops! Authentic Thai food, excellent quality, friendly staff, helpful, very clean. I cannot recommend this place enough. You won't be disappointed and if it's your first time to try Thai...Pad Kra Pao with Pork is awesome. I recommend a 3 of 5 spicy, just right. Give this place a try!!!! 10 out of 10!

This place has the best Thai food we've had in the Midwest! Since moving to the Midwest from Oregon, we've been hard-pressed to find really satisfying Thai food, so we were so excited to find Jay's, and in all places, Chisago! We had the Pad Thai with shrimp, Tom Yum, and Pineapple Fried Rice. All were delicious. The dine-in service was friendly & quick (even on a Saturday around dinner time). We visit the Chisago/Lindstrom area often, and we'll probably eat here every time we come up now. Highly recommended!

Imagine my surprise (delight) finding this place in Chisago. It's become my go-to when I need a spice fix. All of their curries are wonderful (I've tried them all). And their noodle dishes are very fresh. Great quality, large portions, excellent value. Don't hesitate.

Best pad Thai and we love the pineapple fried rice and wontons! Very fast takeout orders

The Tom Ya Kha was excellent. All the authentic spices that ought to be used. We have tired almost everything, it's all so great. Tasty treats that differ from the usual boring fare. Plain dining area but always clean and does the job. There is always parking.

Delicious, authentic Thai food. Small, family run place. I like the pad thai level 4 spice and the mango sweet rice dessert,
