The History Of The Romulans, And Their Place In The Star Trek Universe

"Star Trek" is home to countless alien races, but few have as enduring a presence in the franchise as the Romulans. They're the most persistent adversaries of the Federation, so much so that blue-tinted Romulan Ale remains under trade embargo. This hostility makes it all the more ironic that they resemble humanity's first alien allies, the Vulcans , sharing their pointed ears and arched eyebrows.

The in-universe origin of the Romulans is that they were Vulcans, millennia ago. In that distant past, the Vulcans were a warlike people, far from the cold logicians that fans know. That changed when (in Earth's 4th century), the philosopher Surak taught his people to embrace logic and master their emotions. Not all Vulcans accepted Surak's teachings; "Those Who March Beneath The Raptor's Wings" were eventually exiled from Vulcan. These dissident Vulcans settled on the twin planets Romulus and Remus, evolving into the Romulans and personifying a violent path not taken by their Vulcan cousins.

"Star Trek" is big on allegory — the interstellar powers represent the geopolitics of the 20th century. The Federation is the United States of America, a democracy of many member states. As the Federation's most pressing rival, the Klingon Empire is the Soviet Union. The Romulan Star Empire is China, a "sleeping dragon" superpower.

So, why have the Romulans endured as a crucial part of "Star Trek" history — and what does their role in that history look like?

Romulans in the Original Series

The Romulans were created by writer Paul Schneider, debuting in the season 1 episode "Balance of Terror." The episode features the Enterprise reacting to the destruction of outposts along the Romulan Neutral Zone; the culprit is a Romulan ship armed with a cloaking device. The Romulans flee back home while the Enterprise pursues its invisible quarry in a cat-and-mouse game.

This episode established the Romulan Star Empire had fought humanity in a devastating war a century ago. The war ended with a Neutral Zone established between the two parties' territories. Notably, no human had ever seen a Romulan in this time (or at least, no human who survived to tell about it). That means the Enterprise crew is stunned when they discover their adversaries are identical to Vulcans. The Romulans' exact backstory isn't spelled out, but Spock (Leonard Nimoy) speculates they are a Vulcan offshoot who retained his ancestors' warlike ways.

Schneider modeled the Romulans on the Romans; their twin homeworlds are named for the mythical founders of Rome and they employ ranks like "Centurion." Interviewed for "The Captains' Logs" by authors Edward Gross and Mark Altman , Schneider explained: "I came up with the concept of the Romulans which was an extension of the Roman civilization to the point of space travel, and it turned out quite well."

The Romulans' ship, dubbed a "Bird of Prey" due to the hawk painted on its underbelly, also created an association between the Romulans and birds. By "Star Trek: The Next Generation," their imperial insignia had evolved into a stylized raptor. Their ancestors' moniker, "Those Who March Beneath The Raptor's Wings," was probably extrapolated from this connection too by writer André Bormanis (the name first appears in "Star Trek: Enterprise" episode, "Awakening," written by Bormanis).

Further appearances

"Balance of Terror" is one of the most acclaimed episodes of "Star Trek: The Original Series." It was even semi-remade for the season 1 finale of "Strange New Worlds," titled "A Quality of Mercy." The unnamed Romulan Commander (played by Mark Lenard, who would go on to play Spock's father, Sarek) is an especially well-remembered villain, predating Khan Noonien Singh as the first worthy adversary of Captain Kirk (William Shatner) and the Enterprise. Even with his last words, he retains dignity and honor: "I regret that we meet in this way. You and I are of a kind. In a different reality, I could have called you friend."

Despite this dynamite debut, the Romulans made only two more appearances in "The Original Series." They are the antagonists of the season 2 episode "The Deadly Years," about the Enterprise crew succumbing to premature aging. However, only their ships are seen, not the Romulans themselves. They make a second and final onscreen appearance in season 3's "The Enterprise Incident" ( written by the legendary D.C. Fontana ). In this episode, Spock seduces a Romulan commander (Joanne Linville) while Kirk poses as a Romulan officer to steal her ship's cloaking device.

According to "The Art of Star Trek" by Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens, "Romulans were originally intended to be more of an ongoing threat to the crew of the Enterprise, but the make-up requirements proved too expensive. Klingons were cheaper." Note how, in "Balance of Terror" and "The Enterprise Incident," Romulan extras often wear ear-concealing helmets — an easy way to bypass make-up expenses.

The Romulans had only minor roles in the six theatrical "Star Trek" films featuring the original cast. They were rejected as villains of the third film, "The Search for Spock," again in favor of the Klingons (this is why the Klingons in that film have a cloaked ship called a Bird of Prey).

The Rihannsu

During the 1980s, the Romulans took center-stage in "Rihannsu," a five-novel series written primarily by Diane Duane (Peter Morwood co-authored the second, "The Romulan Way.") Published from 1984 to 2006, the novels invented a culture and language for the Romulans wholesale; they are technically not "Trek" canon but remain acclaimed for their world-building.

"Rihannsu" ("The Declared") is the Romulans' native name for themselves, akin to how German people call their nation "Deutschland," the Japanese call theirs "Nippon," etc. They are driven by "D'era," an expansionist impulse akin to Manifest Destiny, and "Mnhei'sahe" (ruling passion), a complex code of conduct that is foremost a rejection of the Vulcan system of logic.

"Mnhei'sahe" is weighed by one's personal strength and devotion to the Empire. Romulans seek power not for personal benefit per se, but because greater power serves the Empire. Selflessness is an alien concept to the Romulans; do things for the sake of your own Mnhei'sahe and others will benefit in the process. "Mnhei'sahe" spreads its claws even into simple Romulan social interactions, where the ideal outcome is for both parties to depart with their honor intact.

Much of Duane's other additions are inferences based on "Balance of Terror" and "The Enterprise Incident." Akin to Rome, the Romulans are an Oligarchic Republic; a Praetor is elected by the Senate itself, not the people at large. "The Enterprise Incident" showed a Romulan woman with a high military rank. So, "Rihannsu" gave the Romulan society a matriarchial tilt; a Romulan's family lineage is derived from their mother, not their father.

Much of "Rihannsu" is a holdover from the suggestion in "Star Trek: The Original Series" that Romulans were a warrior culture. For instance, their society has a semi-feudal system with a strong emphasis on family affiliation. Canon material would take a different path, showing Romulans as militant but not exactly honorable.

The Next Generation

In "Star Trek: The Next Generation," the Klingons were now good guys (mostly). They also became the go-to warrior race of "Star Trek"; Klingon society took on Viking and Samurai characteristics, where war, personal honor, and feudal affiliation were everything.

The Romulans became less and less the noble Roman-esque adversaries that Schneider had conceived of, with "TNG" instead highlighting their duplicity (with the cloaking devices) and isolationism. Thus, the stereotypical traits of Romulans became paranoia, deception, and xenophobia.

The Romulans were reintroduced in "TNG" season 1 finale, "The Neutral Zone," where it's said they had stayed out of galactic affairs for much of the 24th century. The episode (where several of their colonies are destroyed by the to-be-revealed Borg) awakens them. Creator Gene Roddenberry had initially not wanted to use the Romulans, but poor reception to the Ferengi meant the Federation needed a new adversary. Thus, the Romulans became the most frequent alien antagonist in the series; the Federation and Klingons were united as their enemies. Recurring Romulan villains included Tomalak (Andreas Katsulas) and Sela (Denise Crosby).

The most notable additions to the Romulans in "TNG" included V-shaped forehead ridges (dimorphic evolution from their Vulcan cousins), the D'deridex Class (enormous green warships descended from the Birds-of-Prey from "The Original Series"), and the Tal Shiar, Romulus' secret police.

Romulan highlights in "TNG" include "The Defector" (a Romulan military officer defects to the Federation) and "Reunification" (where Ambassador Spock has begun a push on Romulus for the two peoples to be one again).

The Next Generation (cont'd)

The Romulans weren't as prominent in "Deep Space Nine" as in "The Next Generation," but that series featured them finally uniting with the Federation. While the Federation and Klingons fight a losing war with the expansionist Dominion, the Romulans initially stay on the sidelines.

In the season 6 episode, "In The Pale Moonlight," Captain Sisko (Avery Brooks) and Garak (Andrew Robinson) falsify evidence of the Dominion's plans to invade Romulus and try to sway Senator Vreenak (Stephen McHattie). When their deception is revealed, Garak (with Sisko none the wiser until it's done) pulls a move the Romulans would be proud of: he assassinates Vreenak and frames the Dominion. Thus, the Romulans join the war as allies, and remain so until the series' end.

The Romulans finally got a silver screen spotlight in "Star Trek: Nemesis," the final "TNG" theatrical film. The Romulan Senate is assassinated by a bio-weapon and a new Praetor, Shinzon (Tom Hardy), seizes power. It turns out Shinzon is a failed clone of Picard, the product of an aborted spying operation. The biggest wrinkle "Nemesis" introduces to the Romulans is the Remans. Playing on the pre-established twin planets Romulus and Remus, the grey-skinned Remans are a slave race, toiling as forced laborers and shock troops.

The film skimps on the details of Reman history, so viewers can surmise they evolved on Remus and were subjugated by the Romulans. However, the novel trilogy "Vulcan's Soul" by Josepha Sherman and Susan Shwartz builds on the Remans displaying telepathy like the Vulcans (which the Romulans have always lacked). In this telling, the Remans were Vulcan exiles who refused to give up their telepathy and so were oppressed by the future Romulans; their appearance stems from the poor living conditions on Remus.

Looking to the past

"Star Trek: Enterprise" was a prequel set in the 22nd century, beginning before first contact between humans and Romulans. That event was depicted in the season 2 episode "Minefield," when the Enterprise stumbles into Romulan territory and is disabled by a cloaked minefield. True to canon, only the Romulans' ships are seen in the episode.

The Romulans finally took a larger role in season 4. The three-parter, "The Forge/Awakening/Kir'Shara" was about a Vulcan conspiracy to invade the Andorians. The ending revealed that Vulcan Administrator V'Las (Robert Foxworth) was in league with the Romulans and secretly working towards reunification. A subsequent three-parter, "Babel One/United/The Aenar," featured the Romulans as the explicit villains. A Romulan drone-ship, equipped with a holographic projector and controlled by Admiral Valore (Brian Thompson), attacked ships throughout the Alpha Quadrant to ferment dissent (the story begins with it destroying an Andorian ship while disguised as a Tellarite one, it later destroys a Rigellian freighter while disguised as Enterprise, etc.). However, the attacks only wind up bringing the targeted races together.

"Enterprise" established a firm timeframe for the Earth-Romulan War: 2156 to 2160. Moreover, the war was revealed as the event that brought the Federation together; Humans, Vulcans, Andorians, and Tellarites united in a military alliance against Romulan expansionism and never broke apart. The Romulans' increased presence in season 4 was building up to the war, but unfortunately, "Enterprise" was canceled before subsequent seasons could depict it. Thus, the Earth-Romulan War remains undepicted onscreen, confined to novels "Beneath The Raptor's Wings" and "To Brave The Storm" (both by Michael A. Martin).

The home world destroyed

Romulans were again the villains of a "Star Trek" film in director JJ Abrams' eponymous reboot. In the year 2387, Romulus and Remus are destroyed when their star goes supernova, shattering the Empire. Spock manages to contain the explosion with the substance Red Matter, opening a wormhole that sends him back in time to the 23rd century. Following him is the Romulan mining vessel the Narada, captained by vengeful Captain Nero (Eric Bana) — his name is another allusion to ancient Rome . 

The Narada's presence creates an alternate timeline; Nero and his men destroy Vulcan with Red Matter before being defeated themselves. Nero and the Narada's crew stand out from other Romulans thanks to their shaved heads and tattoos; the admittedly non-canon comic "Star Trek: Countdown" suggests this is part of a mourning ritual. Normally the tattoos would fade, but Nero and his crew burnt them into their skin to ensure they'd never forget the loss of their home.

"Star Trek" returned to the "TNG" era with "Picard" and followed on from this point. It turns out that Starfleet offered to help evacuate Romulus, but after an attack on Mars, reneged on the plan; Picard himself resigned in disgust. The Romulans are far from extinct though. The Empire has collapsed into warring factions, one of which is the Romulan Free State. According to "Star Trek: Discovery," Vulcan/Romulan reunification will have become a reality by the 31st century. The groups remain culturally divided, but they again exist on the same planet, renamed from Vulcan to "Ni'var" (meaning two combined into one).

Romulan worldbuilding

Michael Chabon, showrunner of "Picard" season 1, also shared (via Medium) worldbuilding notes on the Romulans . These presumably influenced his onscreen depiction of them. Chabon writes that the Romulans are such secretive people that there is nothing more intimate to them than the truth; marriages have three participants because there must be third-party verification in everything.

The Romulan government is organized like an espionage network, with multiple competing cells, while Romulans all have four names: the common name (used for familiarity), imperial name (the state-recognized name), open name (for outsiders), and their true name (used only for close intimacy). Chabon suggests that a rumored reason for the Romulans' secrecy is the abundance of camouflaged predators on their adopted homeworld; their cloaked warbirds are modeled on a raptor whose plumage blends into the horizon.

Not all depictions of the Romulans totally align — compare Duane's Rihannsu to Chabon's Romulans. However, they all draw upon "The Original Series" and make inferences from there. "Star Trek" writers and fans aren't much different; they both take canon material and expand on it with some imagination.

Schon bei ihrem ersten Auftritt fällt auf, dass sich Romulaner und Vulkanier sehr ähnlich sehen . Im Star Trek-Universum haben beide gemeinsame Vorfahren, haben sich jedoch im Laufe der Zeit auseinanderentwickelt.

Während die Vulkanier sich ganz der Logik und der Friedfertigkeit verschrieben, gründeten die kriegerischen Romulaner ein Imperium im Weltraum. Die Bezeichnung Romulaner stammt daher, dass ihr Erfinder, der Drehbuchautor Paul Schneider, sie als eine Art Weiterentwicklung des Römischen Reiches im Weltraum konzipierte.

Die Romulaner und die Föderation

Zu Zeiten von Raumschiff Enterprise waren die Romulaner Gegner der Föderation. Schon 100 Jahre zuvor wurde zwischen dem romulanischen Imperium und der Föderation die Romulanische Neutrale Zone eingerichtet: eine Weltraumregion mit einer Breite von ca. einem Lichtjahr, in die kein Schiff beider Mächte fliegen darf, weil dies als kriegerischer Akt gilt.

Später begaben sich die Romulaner in die Isolation, tauchten aber am Ende der 1. Staffel von Raumschiff Enterprise: Das nächste Jahrhundert wieder auf. Erneut waren sie Antagonisten.

Die Gesellschaft der Romulaner

Da es sich bei den Romulanern um eine expansionsfreudige Spezies handelt, ist der militärische bzw. politische Rang innerhalb ihrer Gesellschaft sehr wichtig. Die politische Macht geht vom Senat aus, dem ein sogenannter Prätor vorsitzt.

Unabhängig von Militär und Regierung wirkt wiederum die Geheimpolizei namens Tal Shiar. Sie ist sowohl gegen äußere als auch innere Feinde des Imperiums tätig. Wer ihr in die Quere kommt, den lässt sie schon mal verschwinden und verbreitet so Paranoia .

Das Symbol bzw. Emblem bzw. Logo des romulanischen Reiches ist ein stilisierter Adler, der die Planeten Romulus und Remus in seinen Klauen hält.

Die romulanischen Schiffe

Romulanische Schiffe zeichnen sich vor allem durch ihre Tarnvorrichtung aus, die sie praktisch unsichtbar für das nackte Auge und Sensoren macht. Allerdings ließen sich lange Zeit in getarntem Zustand keine Schilde und Waffen benutzen. Später teilten die Romulaner diese Technologie auch mit den Klingonen.

Das erste romulanische Schiff, dem die Enterprise begegnet, ist ein später sogenannter Bird-of-Prey . Danach nutzten sie auch die ursprünglich klingonische D7-Klasse . Zu Zeiten von Raumschiff Enterprise: Das nächste Jahrhundert und Deep Space Nine waren die Romulaner hauptsächlich mit sogenannten Warbirds der D'deridex-Klasse unterwegs. In Star Trek: Nemesis kam der Valdore-Typ hinzu.

Die Romulaner und die Borg

Bisher gibt es keine spezielle Verbindung der Romulaner und der Borg im Star Trek-Universum . Da beide in Star Trek: Picard aber eine große, gemeinsame Rolle zu spielen scheinen, lässt sich vermuten, dass die Romulaner die Borg und ihre Technologie nutzen wollen, um nach der Zerstörung ihrer Heimatwelt neue Macht zu erlangen.

Ein genaues Startdatum hat Star Trek: Picard noch nicht, sie soll aber Anfang 2020 anlaufen. In Deutschland sind die Folgen wöchentlich bei Amazon Prime zu sehen.

The Untold Truth Of Star Trek's Romulans

Star Trek   gives good bad guy. Since  Star Trek: The Original Series'  ( TOS)  premiere in 1966, Gene Roddenberry and his colleagues have brought us lots of memorable recurring antagonists. There are the warlike Klingons, the trickster Q, and the relentless Borg — but before most of  Trek 's repeat villains came the Romulans. 

Only appearing in a few of the original series' episodes and making minor appearances in the original crew's films, the Romulans were nonetheless remembered when the  Trek  franchise was revived with  Star Trek: The Next Generation   ( TNG ). For most of their time onscreen, the Romulans have been Cold War -like opponents. They plot, they assassinate, and they threaten, but they rarely make open war on Starfleet. But when they do open fire? Well, nine times out of ten, the Romulans only let slip the proverbial dogs of war after their work in the shadows has made their victory seemingly inevitable. 

Unlike Starfleet, the Romulan military and secret agents have few moral qualms about dealing with other species, and their mercilessness helps breed paranoia within their ranks. They'll do anything to get ahead, and assume everyone they meet is just as willing. Their paranoia sometimes proves more than accurate, as even some of the most idealistic members of Starfleet have taken a break from their usual ethical high ground when dealing with the sons and daughters of Romulus.

Their creation was inspired by ancient Rome

According to commentary on the  TOS  season 1 Blu-ray, the idea for the Romulans came from writer Paul Schneider, who wanted worthy adversaries for Captain Kirk (William Shatner) and was inspired by the Roman Empire . 

Romulans make their first appearance in the  TOS  season 1 episode "Balance of Terror." We learn that after a bloody conflict with the Romulans, a peace treaty was forged between them and the Federation via subspace radio. The treaty establishes a neutral zone in which neither side's ships are allowed to enter. A map is displayed to the  Enterprise  crew that shows the planets Romulus and Remus on the opposite side of the zone. 

Romulus was the legendary founder of Rome. In Roman myth, Romulus and his brother Remus are born to a mortal woman, Rhea Silvia, who mates with Mars — the god of war. Left for dead by their uncle Amulius' servants, the twins are saved by a wolf. They're eventually raised by shepherds and, upon growing to adulthood and learning the truth about who they are, they kill their uncle and seek a place to start their own kingdom. There are different versions of how it happens, but at some point in the tale Romulus usually kills Remus in a dispute over where their new kingdom is to be founded. 

Considering the treachery and violence we've seen the Romulans are capable of, if nothing else Schneider picked fitting names for their worlds. 

Romulans are an offshoot of Vulcans

When the  Enterprise  first encounters Romulans, they're the first humans to actually see the race, and their physical similarities to Vulcans leaves some crew members questioning Spock's (Leonard Nimoy) loyalty. Their similar features aren't a coincidence — Romulans are an offshoot of the Vulcan species.

Centuries before the events of Star Trek  when the Vulcans begin to purge their emotions in pursuit of pure logic, not everyone plays ball. Some Vulcans reject the new ideas, and after a bloody war they leave to create their own society on Romulus and Remus. 

Romulans, however, are not   just Vulcans on a different planet. Millenia of genetic drift created many subtle variations in their physiological makeup. They still share pointed ears, but there are some obvious differences, like the prominent ridges on Romulans' foreheads. There are less obvious differences too, which Dr. Crusher learns in the  TNG  episode "The Enemy," when she unsuccessfully tries to heal an injured Romulan by treating him as if he were a Vulcan.

Predictably there are Romulans like TNG 's Sela (Denise Crosby) who feel nothing but contempt for Vulcans. But some feel a strong kinship toward their less passionate cousins. In the  TOS  episode "The Enterprise Incident," the Romulan Commander (Joanne Linville) admires and and is attracted to Spock. In the  TNG  two-parter "Unification," it's feared that Spock has defected to Romulus, when in fact he's there meeting the members of a growing movement of Romulans who wish to reunite with their Vulcan ancestors. 

One of the first onscreen Romulans was Spock's dad... kind of

If you're more familiar with the original crew movies than with  TOS , or more familiar with  TNG , then you may be surprised to learn who played the first onscreen Romulan Commander: Mark Lenard, who would later appear in "Journey to Babel" as Spock's father Sarek. Lenard reprised the role of Sarek in  TNG , in a number of the original crew movies, and even lent his voice to Sarek in  Star Trek: The Animated Series . But before he played Sarek, he played the unnamed Romulan Commander in "The Balance of Terror." 

Speaking to  Starlog  (via MyStarTrekScrapbook ) in 1984, Lenard said the Romulan Commander role was the second time he'd gone up for a part on  TOS . And while the second time proved the charm as far as getting on the series was concerned, it would take a third try before he got to meet any of the series regulars. In "Balance of Terror," all of the communication between his character and the  Enterprise  crew takes place on a viewscreen, so there was never any need for him to be in the same space. It wasn't until he returned as Sarek that he was able to meet the intrepid crew.

Lenard wasn't the only Romulan in that episode to return later as a Vulcan. Lawrence Montaigne, who plays the ambitious Romulan officer Decius in "Balance of Terror," returns as the Vulcan Stonn in season 2's "Amok Time." 

The Romulans boast a number of secret cabals

One of the reasons so many Romulans remain loyal to their government is the Tal Shiar — a powerful secret police that conducts clandestine operations both inside the Romulan Empire and against Romulus' rivals. They kidnap, torture, assassinate, and don't lose much sleep over any of it. 

The Tal Shiar is first mentioned in  TNG but becomes more visible in  Star Trek: Deep Space Nine ( DS9 ), when we witness how resilient the organization is. In the two-part DS9  story spanning "Improbable Cause" and "The Die is Cast," the Tal Shiar join forces with the Cardassians' secret police — the Obsidian Order — in a sneak attack on the Dominion. The whole thing turns out to be a trap and their fleet is decimated. The events wipe out the Obsidian Order and help lead to the overthrow of the Cardassian government. The Tal Shiar, on the other hand, are still one of the most powerful parts of the Romulan government when we meet their leader Koval (John Fleck) in the  DS9 s eason 7 episode "Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges."

More recently in  Star Trek: Picard ,   we learn the Tal Shiar is a part of an older organization called the Zhat Vash — something so secret some Tal Shiar members believe it's a myth. The Zhat Vash is dedicated to wiping out all synthetic life, and it's embedded in governments all over the galaxy, including the highest ranks of Starfleet.

A favorite episode proves Starfleet isn't above using Romulan tactics

The Romulans are often depicted as unduly paranoid in contrast to the well-intentioned heroes of Starfleet. In a fan-favorite episode –  DS9 's "In the Pale Moonlight" — Starfleet proves that sometimes the Romulans should  be paranoid. 

Captain Ben Sisko (Avery Brooks) commits himself to convincing the Romulans to enter the war against the Dominion. He enlists the enigmatic Cardassian Garak (Andrew Robinson) to retrieve Dominion plans to invade Romulus. When that doesn't work out, Garak sells Sisko on the idea of creating a fake holographic record of the Dominion leaders discussing the invasion of Romulus. Sisko invites the Romulan Senator Vreenak (Joseph McHattie) to DS9 to show him the recording, but the senator sees through the lie. Not long after an enraged Vreenak leaves the station, we learn his ship has been destroyed and the Tal Shiar believes the Dominion is behind it. Sisko realizes Garak never meant for the fake holo-record to work, but instead always planned to assassinate Vreenak and pin it on the Dominion. Sisko is enraged and even attacks Garak in his shop, but in the end — because he's desperate to defeat the Dominion — he keeps the truth to himself. 

The entire story is told from Sisko's point of view as he reads it into a log entry. In the final moments of the episode, as soon as he finishes the tale, he orders the computer to delete it. 

Romulans make Star Trek's most famous beverage

Apparently, when Romulans aren't plotting to dominate the galaxy, they like to party. Sprinkled here and there throughout the  Trek  franchise is Romulan Ale — a  very  strong alcoholic drink that is illegal in the Federation, yet Starfleet officers keep getting their hands on it anyway. 

The first time the beverage is mentioned is in 1982's  Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan when Bones (DeForest Kelley) brings a bottle of it to James Kirk for his birthday. Kirk is noticeably surprised at how strong the drink is. Regardless, he somehow doesn't have a problem serving it during a diplomatic dinner aboard the  Enterprise  in 1991's  Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country — a detail that is used against him and McCoy when they're framed for assassinating the Klingon Chancellor. Ben Sisko serves what appears to be replicated Romulan Ale to a Romulan senator in the  DS9  episode "In the Pale Moonlight," though the senator refers to it as "kali fal," which may or may not be the Romulan name for the blue drink. At the wedding reception for Riker and Troi in 2002's  Star Trek: Nemesis , Worf (Michael Dorn) complains that "Romulan ale should be illegal" as he nurses a headache. "It is," Geordi (Levar Burton) reminds him.

As far back as the TOS  episode "The Enterprise Incident," the Romulan Commander shares a blue drink with Spock as she's trying to seduce him, though we never hear its name. 

In 1995, they wanted to wish you a Merry Christmas

In 1995, the Romulan Empire made its first appearance on a Hallmark commercial. No you didn't misread that. Promoting a Romulan Warbird Christmas ornament, Hallmark released a commercial depicting the pointy-eared aliens kidnapping a Hallmark cashier to interrogate her about how she'd "pirated" the design of the ornament from the Romulans. 

And they didn't just get any actors to show up in costume and makeup. The cheerful cashier's interrogators are mostly  Star Trek  actors who had already played villains on at least one  Trek  series. Martha Hackett — the Romulan woman in the commercial — is probably more well known to  Trek  fans as the Cardassian Seska on  Star Trek: Voyager . But she'd also played the Romulan officer T'Rul in the two-part  DS9  episode "The Search." The introduction of the Defiant  includes a cloaking device on loan from the Romulan Empire and it's T'Rul's job to run the cloaking device and keep its secrets from Starfleet. 

Considering neither T'Rul nor any other Romulan is shown on board the  Defiant  to safeguard their cloaking secrets after "The Search," they apparently weren't any better about protecting their secrets than they are at interrogating Hallmark cashiers.

Romulans are in lots of first drafts, but fewer final drafts

When it comes to the Trek  movies, the Romulans usually play second fiddle if   they show up at all. Romulans were the chief antagonists of J.J. Abrams' 2009  Star Trek  reboot, but before that they failed to take center stage in any of the movies. The closest they got was 2002's  Star Trek: Nemesis ; their homeworld and government are important to the plot, but the main villain is Shinzon (Tom Hardy) — a clone of Picard — and a race of former slaves called the Remans. 

But it isn't for lack of trying. The Romulans were originally meant to take a larger role in a number of  Trek  films. Remember the Klingons in 1984's  Star Trek III: The Search for Spock ,   led by the ruthless Commander Kruge (Christopher Lloyd)? According to a 2002 issue of  Star Trek: The Magazine , it was originally going to be the Romulans who clash with the  Enterprise in orbit of the Genesis planet — not Klingons. They were  originally planned as the villains for 1998's  Star Trek: Insurrection , but were ultimately replaced by the face-stretching Son'a. In Michael Piller's unpublished book Fade In , the  Trek  writer wrote that Patrick Stewart — among others — was very much against the inclusion of the Romulans, who the actor felt were "unexciting." Stewart worried that using the Romulans would make it appear as if "we just couldn't come up with any new bad guys." 

The process of turning an actor into a Romulan has evolved

The look of the Romulans, the process of creating that look, and the resources devoted to it have all changed significantly since their first appearances. In  TOS , Romulans look almost identical to Vulcans, and the cost of adding latex pointy ears to actors made them too expensive to use on background actors. On the  TOS  season 1 Blu-ray commentary, we learn that in "Balance of Terror," only two of the Romulan actors were actually given the ears while the rest of the Romulans are made to wear helmets hiding their ears.

Romulans show up a lot more once  TNG  comes around, and their reintroduction comes with a new design. Prominent brow ridges were added to Romulan prosthetics. According to the reference book  Star Trek: The Next Generation 365 , this was both to make the Romulans appear more menacing and to help differentiate them from their Vulcan cousins.

As of the 2020 premiere of  Star Trek: Picard , hi-def technology changed things. On  The Ready Room  – the  Picard  after-show — prosthetic designer Vincent Van Dyke said that "every single background performer, all the way to the foreground hero characters" not only are fitted with ears, but "laced brows." Every single Romulan actor on  Picard  wears a prosthetic piece that includes eyebrows which have been painstakingly laced — one hair at a time — into the prosthetic. Long gone are the days of fitting the extras with skullcap helmets. 

In Star Trek: Picard, the Romulans become both friends and foes

One of the unique things about  Star Trek: Picard is that while it gives us plenty of Romulan villains, we also meet possibly the most sympathetic Romulan characters to ever appear in any  Trek  production.

When we find the retired Picard running his family vineyard, he's accompanied by two Romulans who treat him like nothing less than family. Laris (Orla Brady) and Zhaban (Jamie McShane) are former Tal Shiar agents who live with Picard, cook for him and — when a Zhat Vash squad comes gunning for the retired admiral — risk their lives for him. Their loyalty springs largely from Picard's efforts to evacuate the Romulan Empire. Both are fiercely protective of Picard, particularly Laris. 

At the same time, the Romulans have not all left their more villainous impulses behind. Along with Picard's Romulan friends, the newer series introduces us to the seductive Narek (Harry Treadaway), his ruthless sister Narissa (Peyton List), and the fanatical Zhat Vash whose agents have the unsettling ability to spit out a corrosive liquid that kills both themselves and anyone unlucky enough to be nearby. 

Star Trek: Picard forces 2009's Star Trek to make more sense

One of the interesting side effects of  Star Trek: Picard and its stronger focus on the Romulans is that it manages to reach back in time and force 2009's  Star Trek to make more sense. 

A lot of fans — even those who enjoyed J.J. Abrams' reinvention of the  Trek  franchise — weren't overly impressed with Eric Bana's Nero. The Romulan villain goes into the past and, among other things, destroys Vulcan. Nero does what he does purely for vengeance, to get back at the Federation for the supernova that destroyed Romulus and killed his family. To some fans, Nero's motivations didn't add up. After all, the Romulan supernova is a natural phenomenon. How could Nero blame the Federation, the Vulcans, or anyone else for not helping, particularly when you consider how hostile the Romulans have been to, well...  everyone ? 

But with  Star Trek: Picard and the backstory it presents, Nero's quest for vengeance comes into focus. In  Picard  we learn that Starfleet committed to helping evacuate the Romulan Empire and then, after the unexpected synthetic revolt on Mars, backed out of the endeavor. From Nero's point of view, it's one thing to stand by and do nothing; it's quite another to offer help and then to withdraw it at the 11th hour. It makes Nero's rage much easier to relate to, though his actions are no less monstrous.

Star Trek Officially Brings Back Picard's Breakout Star... As a Villain

Star Trek: Picard made five major changes and updates to the Romulans under the purview of showrunner Michael Chabon. In season 1 of the Star Trek: The Next Generation sequel series, Patrick Stewart returned to his iconic role as Jean-Luc Picard but without the classic Star Trek ship USS Enterprise . In Star Trek: Picard , the retired Starfleet Admiral was called back to save the galaxy by unlocking a Romulan conspiracy intended to wipe out the android children of Commander Data (Brent Spiner).

The Romulans and their insidious culture were central to Star Trek: Picard , which followed up the storyline of the destruction of Romulus via supernova that occurred in J.J. Abrams' 2009 Star Trek movie. In fact, Captain Will Riker (Jonathan Frakes) chided Picard that his choice to lead the United Federation of Planets' failed effort to rescue the Romulan people would leave him " a**-deep in Romulans " for the rest of his life - a hilarious prediction that proved prophetic. Indeed, by the end of Star Trek: Picard season 1, the head of Starfleet Security, Commodore Oh (Tamlyn Tomita) was exposed as a Romulan general and a conspiracy that resulted in an attack on Mars by rogue synthetics that led to all artificial lifeforms being banned by the Federation for 15 years was proven as a Romulan plot. Jean-Luc himself was reborn in a new android body after his ordeal with the Romulans ended in Star Trek: Picard season 1.

In Star Trek: Picard 's era of 2399, the Romulans managed to take control of a damaged Borg Cube and turned it into the Artifact. The Romulans oversaw the Borg Reclamation Project where a team of scientists was able to safely strip Borg technology from assimilated drones and return them back to their original states, although they will forever bear the scars of their time as Borg. One of the scientists, Dr. Soji Asha (Isa Briones), was targeted by a Romulan spy named Narek (Harry Treadaway), who knew she was one of the androids secretly created from the positronic neuron of Data. Yet Narek fell in love with Soji (in his twisted Romulan way) while his sister Narissa (Peyton List) helped Commodore Oh under the guise of Starfleet Lieutenant Rizzo.

Star Trek: Picard season 1 explored and expanded the Romulan culture in ways that Trekkers hadn't seen since TNG and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine . The series introduced new concepts like the Qowat Milat, a sect of Romulan warrior nuns, debuted new Romulan starship designs and created new Romulan mythologies that Star Trek: Picard 's conflicts were built around. Chabon recently penned an essay titled " Some Notes on Romulans " that dives deeper into the background he created for the Romulans. While much of it can't be considered canonical since it hasn't (yet) appeared on-screen, many of Chabon's ideas that fleshed out what fans knew (or thought they knew) about the Romulans have indeed played major roles in Star Trek: Picard and Star Trek: Discovery season 3.

Romulans Hate Androids And Artificial Intelligence

Star Trek: Picard began with the murder of Dahj , Soji's twin sister, by Romulans. This kicked off one of the biggest updates to Romulan culture as Star Trek: Picard established that Romulans have an unassuageable hatred of artificial lifeforms. This was even hammered home by Laris (Orla Brady), a former member of the Tal Shiar, who asked Jean-Luc, "Have you never noticed the complete absence of any form of artificial life in Romulan culture?"  This seemingly rhetorical question drove Trekkers to rack their memory banks and go back and watch prior Romulan-focused Star Trek episodes. After all, Data himself once visited Romulus in TNG 's "Unification" two-parter but wasn't met with overt signs of hatred.

However, Star Trek: Picard revamped Romulans to have despised all forms of artificial intelligence and synthetic beings for thousands of years. Star Trek: Picard also introduced a faction that even predates the Tal Shiar, the Zhat Vash, which was a cult led by Commodore Oh that was dedicated to wiping out all synthetics. The Zhat Vash masterminded the Mars attack and the synthetics ban. Ultimately, the Zhat Vash feared an  ancient secret of a race of synthetic beings who would destroy all organic life in the galaxy, which Picard and his friends prevented in the season 1 finale.

Romulans Have Several Names And Secretive Private Lives

As Narek seduced Soji, some fascinating new facets of Romulan culture were revealed: Romulans have multiple names that serve different purposes. Each Romulan uses a name the Empire knows them as, another name for close family, and yet one more secret "true" name that is revealed only in the most intimate of moments. In Narek's case, he told Soji his true name is Hrai Yan in order to get her to trust him. But since he was really plotting to execute her, this may have been a lie. Michael Chabon's essay actually expands this to Romulans having four names.

Star Trek: Picard also introduced a shared mythical framework for Romulans - they see the events of the past as "news" according to Soji - and that Romulan homes are actually entered by the back door. The front of a Romulan home is a purposeful deception meant to fool the uninvited. As Chabon elaborates in his essay, the Romulan life is built on a foundation of cover stories, deceit, and concealment in order to protect their true private lives.

The Tal Shiar's Structure

The Tal Shiar, alternatively known as the Romulan secret police, was introduced in TNG and has become a cornerstone of Star Trek , just as the Cardassians have the Obsidian Order and the Federation has Section 31 as their own black ops agencies. Star Trek: Picar d posited the possibility that the Tal Shiar is a mask for the older Zhat Vash , but most members of the Tal Shiar think of the Zhat Vash as a ghost story.

Chabon posits that the Tal Shiar is actually more like an elite warrior corps than a network of spies. In any case, the Tal Shiar is so adept at obfuscating their true structure and functionality that even Federation experts on the Romulans like Raffi Musiker (Michelle Hurd) don't have, and will probably never grasp, the full picture of the Tal Shiar.

The Importance Of The Qowat Milat

Perhaps Star Trek: Picard' s most radical addition is the Qowat Milat, a sect of Romulan warrior nuns who practice "absolute candor". Elnor (Evan Evagora) is the rare male accepted into the Qowat Milat, and they became close with Picard when he relocated them to a new planet following the Romulan sun's supernova. Another fascinating trait of the Qowat Milat is that they will only bind their swords to those they feel are a lost cause.

According to Chabon, the influence of the Qowat Milat is more far-reaching than Star Trek: Picard revealed. The Qowat Milat is an indelible force in the Romulan government. Chabon specifies, "It is whispered that no one becomes Praetor without the approval of the Qowat Milat... Furthermore, the Romulan Empress is always drawn from, or trained by, the Qowat Milat sisters ".  The political influence of the Qowat Milat manifested in Star Trek: Discovery season 3, which revealed that Gabrielle Burnham (Sonja Sohn), the mother of Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green), joined the Qowat Milat in the 32nd century. Gabrielle certainly had sway in the political process of Ni'Var, the combined Vulcan and Romulan homeworld , which canonizes Chabon's concepts.

The Inspiration For Romulan Starships And Cloaking Device

Star Trek: Picard introduced new versions of the Romulan Warbird as well as debuting the Snakehead, the small fighter piloted by Narek. Chabon's essay described how Romulan starship design was influenced by the animals and plants the first settlers found when they took over the planet Romulus. The warbird was inspired by a native predatory bird that has optical properties that allow it to vanish in a clear blue sky. The warbird's illusion is said to be the inspiration for the most Romulan of technologies: the cloaking device .

While the Romulans have always been an important part of Star Trek , the additions to the canon made by Chabon and Picard 's creative team make for interesting progressions that will echo throughout the universe moving forward. It's certainly something that will likely be continued into Star Trek: Picard season 2 and Star Trek:   Discovery season 4.

Being descended from Vulcans , Romulans have pointed ears, eyebrows that are arched and upswept, a heart located where a Human liver is present and copper -based green blood . As such, they possess many similarities with only small differences separating the two species.

One of these noted differences is the presence of only a vestigial inner eyelid, as the Romulans no longer live under a bright sun . As such, the inner eyelid no longer possessed a function and became vestigial, though a small number of newly born Romulans do possess an additional lid. Romulan geneticists , however, believe that within another few centuries , the genes that produce the inner eyelid would be bred out.

A Romulan, like a Vulcan, possesses far greater strength compared to a Human of similar height and weight. This is attributed to the greater muscle and bone density of their bodies. ( TNG novel : The Romulan Prize )

Many Romulans have two brow ridges above the bridge of their nose, forming a V-shape on the forehead. Others lack the ridges, making them outwardly indistinguishable from Vulcans. ( TOS episode : " Balance of Terror "; TNG episode : " The Neutral Zone "; TOS movie : Star Trek )

Romulans with the two brow ridges were from the northern part of Romulus. Northerners were stereotyped by other Romulans as stubborn. ( PIC episode : " The End is the Beginning ")

They also have a tiny bone spur located at the base of the palms of their hands. ( TNG novel : War Drums )

Being direct descendants of the Vulcans, the Romulans have exhibited the physical strength and telepathic abilities common in Vulcans. Physiologically speaking, the Romulans have a much faster heart rate than humans , at an average rate of 240 beats per minute. ( TLE novel : Serpents Among the Ruins )

In addition to this, the Romulans did not undergo the affects of Pon farr , due to not repressing their normal sexual urges unlike their Vulcan cousins. Despite this, certain Romulans are telepathically receptive to this condition. ( TOS novel : Killing Time )

Finally, the Romulan lifespan is noted to be still prodigious and it's not uncommon for certain members of the species to pass two centuries of age. ( Last Unicorn RPG module : The Way of D'era: The Romulan Star Empire )

Like many Vulcanoid species, the Romulans require a daily diet of Kelassium in order to avoid intestinal scarring. ( TNG novel : Red Sector )

Telepathy [ ]

It was a curiosity to many as to why the Romulans did not possess the same psionic talents as their parent race. Numerous debates on the subject meant that there was no certainty about the reason, with arguments ranging from it being a factor of genetics to a result of societal upbringing. Some even believe that, due to the Romulans' desire to retain their aggression, they never found the inner strength of the mind that the Vulcans possessed, thus denying them any form of potential telepathic powers. Terise Haleakala-LoBrutto 's historical text The Romulan Way stated that Vulcan psionic abilities died out during the Romulan migration following the Sundering because many adepts died on the journey, and new adepts could not be taught without "laying on of hands" by circles of trained adepts. ( TOS - Rihannsu novel : The Romulan Way )

During the Vulcan-Romulan War , the Romulans began placing deep cover sleeper agents on Vulcan . One of the missions these agents had was to convince Vulcans that using their telepathic abilities was dangerous in order to nullify the telepathic advantage their Vulcan cousins had over them. By the early 20th century these agents managed to plant false medical studies stating that mind melds were neurologically harmful. Due to the publication of these studies, use of telepathic abilities declined and only a small minority of Vulcans used their telepathic abilities by the mid 22nd century . After the overthrow of the Romulan-backed Vulcan High Command in 2154 , use of telepathic abilities gained much greater acceptance in Vulcan society; however, some Vulcans still felt use of these abilities in public to be reckless and uncouth. Extended contact with the Romulans led Starfleet to believe that telepathic Romulans did exist, but to what degree was unknown in the mid- 23rd century . In the year 2270 , it wasn't considered possible to seriously speculate on the matter. ( TOS - The Yesterday Saga novel : Yesterday's Son )

As such, Romulans do not demonstrate the telepathic traits that their Vulcan cousins possess, though it has been hypothesized and speculated that the dormant gene allowing these abilities does surface among Romulans on rare occasions. ( TOS novel : Captain's Blood ) In fact, once they became aware of this fact, a movement sprung during the 23rd century where they attempted to develop these talents. Psionic development was noted as being limited amongst the Romulan race and lacked the intensive training of their Vulcan cousins. Despite this being the case, it was known that the potential existed should the race choose to exploit it. Some reports indicated that the Romulans used their limited psionic potential to enhance the expression of emotion between individuals in close contact which was done so only amongst family members. Though their experiments to develop psionic capabilities was not an overwhelming success, there was some notable achievements such as finding empaths amongst their population. Such individuals were often tested as a young age for definitive psi potential, whereupon the offspring were taken from their parents and raised by the Tal Shiar . The Romulan miner Nero rediscovered his species' dormant abilities during his time on Rura Penthe and honed them through the usage of mind-altering drugs. He used these abilities to communicate with his Borg-enhanced ship the Narada and V'Ger to determine the time and place of Spock's arrival, along with his crew during his 25-year vow of silence. By 2409 , more Romulans manifested a weak form of telepathy, for the most part limited to being able to sense the presence of others. ( ST video game : Star Trek Online )

The Romulans originate from the planet Vulcan where they were one of many warring factions on the violent world. After the Vulcan race adopted the beliefs and doctrines of Surak the Romulans departed to find a world of their own in deference of the Vulcan culture, an event referred to as the Sundering .

They found the world Romulus and founded the Romulan Star Empire . ( TOS - Rihannsu novel : The Romulan Way )

The Romulan species was devastated by a series of cataclysms in the latter half of the 24th century , beginning with a coup d'état against the Romulan Senate under Praetor Hiren in 2379 . Executed primarily by a group of dissatisfied Romulan Imperial Fleet officers, the coup was led by Shinzon , a human clone of Federation Starfleet Captain Jean-Luc Picard who had taken over the dilithium mines on Remus with the indigenous Remans ' support. Though Shinzon's co-conspirators turned on him and helped Picard kill him after realizing how unstable he was, disagreements between Commander Donatra and now-Praetor Tal'Aura led to a civil war between forces loyal to each, with Donatra and her loyalists briefly seceding as the Imperial Romulan State . ( TNG movie & novelization : Star Trek Nemesis ; TTN novel : The Red King ; STO website  : The Path to 2409 )

The central government remained weak into 2387 , when a Romulan mining crew led by Nero discovered that the star Hobus was building up to supernova . Unbeknownst to Nero, the supernova was not a natural occurrence: it had in fact been triggered by a sunkiller bomb of Elachi origin, deployed by rogue Tal Shiar officer Hakeev at the behest of the Iconians . Nero attempted to warn Praetor Chulan and the Senate of the danger, but was unable to convince them to act. He instead worked with Ambassador Spock to attempt to save Romulus without them, using a red matter -induced black hole to eliminate the star; however Spock failed to reach Hobus in time.

The shockwave from the supernova breached subspace and crossed the distance from the Hobus system to the Romulan system in a mere 27 hours, obliterating the entire system and killing billions of Romulans and Remans. Spock deployed his red matter weapon in the Hobus system to prevent any further damage, but he and several Federation and Klingon ships including USS Enterprise came under attack by Nero. Spock's and Nero's vessels both became trapped by the black hole's gravity and were presumed destroyed, though in reality they had both been transported back in time to the 23rd century , creating the Kelvin timeline . During the subsequent interregnum civil wars and an opportunistic Klingon invasion led by Councillor J'mpok continued to plague the Romulans. Eventually a successor government on Rator III won out, selecting Admiral Taris as praetor in 2391 . Her reign was marked by power struggles between herself, the Senate, and the military, and she was eventually unseated in 2403 in a military coup led by General Velal , who installed the exiled Sela as praetor. In 2408 Sela proclaimed herself Empress of the Romulan Star Empire , decreeing that the Senate would now serve at her pleasure. ( STO website  : The Path to 2409 )

The Romulan Republic [ ]

Amid the power struggles of the late 24th century the Tal Shiar quickly amassed power, effectively becoming a state unto itself. Alarmed at this trend, a cadre of Romulan dissidents and military officers, led by Unificationist leader D'Tan and Admiral Kererek , formed a faction to combat them that became known as the Romulan Republic. By the time of the Elachi sack of Virinat in 2409, the Republic was openly engaging Tal Shiar warships. At a conference on Khitomer later that year, the Federation and Klingon Empire recognized the Republic as a sovereign state over objections from the self-proclaimed Empress Sela and outright attempted sabotage by the Tal Shiar under Hakeev. D'Tan was named Proconsul of the Romulan Republic and a government was formed on Dewa III , renamed New Romulus . ( STO episodes : " Tutorial ", " From the Ashes ")

Romulan myths stated that their race was forged in Vorta Vor . ( TOS movie : Star Trek V: The Final Frontier ) Known as the Wellspring of Creation where the ancient Vhorani created their race.

Romulans believe in the Way of D'era which dictates that they are destined to rule the galaxy and is perhaps the source of their arrogant views as well as their belief in their own superiority. It comes from the teachings of Tellus who stated that their people were the children of the Vhorani who made the Vulcan race to become their inheritors to a great destiny of controlling the galaxy. Therefore, under these teachings, all other races were inferior to the Romulan people. ( Last Unicorn RPG module : The Way of D'era: The Romulan Star Empire ) Some reports even indicated that Romulan writings that their ancestors were told by a race of great beings called the Great Brothers who were possibly the Preservers gave them a responsibility to build a Road to the Stars in order to join their gods at the end of their task. Furthermore, these stories state that that they were given enough just to start the "Road" and that it was their duty to build upon it further which makes Romulan expansionism a religiously motivated behavior. Their relationship with the Great Brothers was not entirely clear but a shrine of them existed in each family temple. ( FASA RPG module : The Romulans )

The dictates of D'era became the source of the Romulan concept of honor which differs greatly compared to the Klingons for it was not a warrior-like concept but a reflection of the accomplishments made by the individual on a family, personal and imperial level. ( Last Unicorn RPG module : The Way of D'era: The Romulan Star Empire )

Another concept that was viewed religiously by certain Romulans was a belief in the Elements which they believe embody the universe itself. ( TOS novel : My Enemy, My Ally )

Interestingly, the Romulan had their own concept of a mythical creature that would die in fire and be reborn such as the Phoenix of Earth myths. It was known as Alth'Indor in the Romulan language. ( DS9 - Millennium novel : The War of the Prophets ) In addition to this, certain demons existed within Romulan beliefs. One such creature was a demon lord called Bettatan'ru who certain Romulans prayed to in order to achieve their goals. ( TOS novel : Killing Time )

Vulcans and Romulans are genetically compatible for breeding purposes, although for many years the Romulan government denied this was a possibility, to avoid the consequences of being forced to pay reparations for any such offspring should they occur. According to Saavik , a practice of the 23rd century Romulans was to sire children with Vulcan females by rape, forcing the women to remain alive only long enough to give birth to the child. This could also be forced on a Vulcan man coerced to impregnate a Romulan woman, and in both cases the situation was seen as a great coup of social status for the Romulan. Romulans would also establish dominance among prisoners by taking wives from other species and fathering children with them, although the marriages were rarely harmonious. Sela was the result of such a marriage. ( TOS novelization : The Wrath of Khan ; TNG episode : " Redemption II ")

Romulan children are branded at birth with a mark unique to their family. Saavik stated that her brand afforded her proof of her lineage and with it, certain rights—such as the right to a blood duel with her Romulan father, should she find him. ( TOS novelization : The Search for Spock ) Amongst their society, the cry for vengeance was passed from father to son until it was meted out. ( DS9 comic : " Blood and Honor ")

Details from the Eridam Papers state that the Romulan Way allows for no room for individuals who are not physically able to serve their obligations to the Star Empire. As such, children born with physical deformities or attributes that impede their ability to serve their society are not allowed to live which means that the Romulans practice euthanasia. The development of the child is monitored closely until the age of 5. If the child is fit then they enter a rigorous training program of schooling, cultural indoctrination and physical training for 15 years. During this time, the child is regularly tested as the Romulans are reluctant to spend resources on a child that is unable to compete; such children are forever left behind.

Until the age of 20, the child is judged on whether they are physically and mentally fit by Romulan standards. If they are not then they must prove that they have the right to live by fighting a youth of the same approximate age. This trial by combat is to the death with the winner proving their worthiness while the loser being shown to be unsuitable to become a Romulan citizen. Once this is complete, it is compulsory for all Romulans to spend at least 5 years in the military with both sexes serving equally which provides the bulk of the Empire's military forces. After completion of this tour of duty, the Romulan is accepted as a citizen and may marry. ( FASA RPG module : The Romulans )

Within Romulan society, there exists the family structure known as the House who are an extended family of nobles who sit in the Imperial Romulan Senate . The leader of the House tend to maneuver its members to positions of power and authority in order to enhance the Houses power, prestige and wealth. Houses can be divided and merged which can lead to new Houses forming or old Houses being destroyed. ( ST video game : Starfleet Command )

Family was important to a Romulan, most notably among the upper echelons, the pseudo-aristocracy that rules Romulan life. Family is a source of pride. It is a way to amass great wealth and power within the empire. Notable Romulan families control entire fleets and worlds, and most often send a family member to sit on the Senate. They are patricians in the classic sense, believing they have the right to rule, but caring for their subjects as though they were beloved children. ( Decipher RPG module : Aliens )

It was Romulan tradition that upon the death of a loved one that the grieving loved ones painted ancient symbols of love and loss onto their skin. This represented their grief according to their traditions and by the time the paint faded, the mourning period was over whereupon life went on. ( TOS comic : " Countdown, Number Three ")

Society [ ]

Romulans were known to fear disgrace over death. ( TAS episode : " The Practical Joker ") This was one of the reasons why Romulan parents were known to kill offspring who possessed any form of birth defect as they would be a waste of resources as well as a burden on the family. ( TNG episode : " The Enemy ")

Part of Romulan behavior was influenced by the belief in D'era , which stated that they were the caretakers of the universe .

Part of their races belief that they are a superior form of life and destined to rule the galaxy stems from the fact that the early Romulans, once they settled on their new home world, encountered very few alien races and tended to believe that they were the only advanced race in existence. Paranoia was etched deeply within the Romulan psyche and character background which was made evident when the Romulan Senate 's floor held a picture of the Romulan Neutral Zone , a symbol of everything that inhibits and threatens the Empire. ( TTN novel : Taking Wing )

Among the Romulan people, the race developed the concept of " Final Honor " which was something that requires a Romulan to sacrifice their life to prevent them from being captured, or for their honor being taken from them. ( TOS episode : " Balance of Terror "; TOS - Vulcan's Soul novel : Epiphany )

Romulans tend to consider themselves, as well as their distant Vulcan brethren, as superior to other races. ( ST video game : Starfleet Command II: Empires at War ) However, this being said, the Romulans also consider the Vulcans to have strayed away from the warrior teachings of D'Era and have abandoned their destiny that was given to them by the Vhorani. The Romulans possess a caste system-based society with a high caste; given more respect, due to the nature of their birth. ( TNG novel : The Romulan Prize ) The Reman species, being an offshoot of the Romulans, are considered an undesirable caste within Romulan society. ( TNG movie : Star Trek Nemesis ) Romulans are also known to make use of slaves . ( TNG novel : The Romulan Prize )

By tradition, a Rihannsu who was incapable of mating and continuing the clan line was not permitted a political career. This meant that castration was considered an act similar to execution in some instances and was employed against conquered political enemies as well as upon Court servants in order to eliminate their aspirations for power. Die Geschichte der Romulaner beginnt im 3. Jahrhundert auf Vulkan . Als sich Suraks Lehren von der „Zähmung“ aggressiver bzw. destruktiver Emotionen durch Logik immer mehr ausbreiten, entsteht ein Konflikt unter den Völkern, der im vulkanischen Bürgerkrieg gipfelt. Dieser bringt die vulkanische Zivilisation abermals an den Rand der Ausrottung und so setzt sich Suraks Philosophie als Notwendigkeit zum Überleben durch. Allerdings sind nicht alle Vulkanier bereit, sich dieser Lehre anzuschließen und so entschließen sich einige Gruppen, welche diese Lehren nicht umsetzen wollen, den Planeten gegen Ende des 4. Jahrhunderts zu verlassen. Nach einer langen und entbehrungsreichen Reise mit Raumschiffen , findet eine dieser Gruppen schließlich eine neue Heimat auf dem Planeten Romulus im Beta-Quadranten . Dieser bietet eine ideale und lebensfreundliche Umgebung, wie sie viele humanoide Rassen bevorzugen, welche aber mit dem Vulkan kurioserweise wenig Ähnlichkeit hat. Im selben System gibt es einen weiteren Planeten, der Leben ermöglicht und zudem enorm reich an Dilithium ist. Dieses Material ist möglicherweise der Grund, sich in diesem System anzusiedeln, da es für die interstellare Raumfahrt extrem wichtig ist. Die Vorkommen sind so groß, dass sie noch im 24. Jahrhundert große Teile des romulanischen Bedarfs decken. ( TNG : Wiedervereinigung? Teil I , Wiedervereinigung? Teil II )

Auf dem Schwesterplanet Remus lebt zu dieser Zeit eine humanoide Spezies, die Remaner . Diese sind vermutlich technisch den Romulanern unterlegen. Zu einem unbestimmten Zeitpunkt übernehmen diese die Kontrolle über das remanische Volk und drängen es in die Rolle von Vasallen, sprich niederen Arbeitern oder Kriegern. Sie werden als minderwertig betrachtet und dienen oft als Kanonenfutter . ( Star Trek: Nemesis )

Weitere Verwandte der Romulaner sind die vulkanisch-stämmigen Exilgruppen, die sich auf den Welten Calder II , Draken IV und Barradas III niederlassen. Aus ihnen formte sich die Kultur der Debrune , die im 24. Jahrhundert aber offenbar nicht mehr existiert. Den Romulanern zumindest ähnlich ist die 'protovulkanische Rasse' der Mintakaner . Romulanisches Sternenimperium [ Bearbeiten ]

Wann genau die Romulaner damit beginnen, ihr interstellares Imperium aufzubauen, ist unbekannt.

Nicht belegt ist auch der Erstkontakt zwischen dem Romulanischen Sternenimperium und ihrem vulkanischen Brudervolk. Er muss jedoch weit vor dem 22. Jahrhundert stattgefunden haben, da der Name Romulanisches Sternenimperium Angehörigen des vulkanischen Oberkommandos ein Begriff ist. Aber kurz nach diesem Kontakt wird durch einen Fehler des Qs Quinn der hundertjährige Krieg zwischen den Romulanern und den Vulkaniern ausgelöst. Danach ist der Kontakt zwischen beiden Rassen sehr begrenzt. ( VOY : Todessehnsucht )

22. Jahrhundert [ Bearbeiten ]

Im 22. Jahrhundert dominiert im Romulanischen Imperium noch das Dogma der Lehre von der unbegrenzten Ausdehnung , dass davon ausgeht, dass sich das Imperium unbegrenzt erweitern und mehren würde. Dieses Dogma wird erst durch den Kontakt mit der Menschheit und später der Föderation zerstört. ( ENT : Die Aenar )

Das erste Zusammentreffen mit den Menschen ereignet sich 2152 , als die Enterprise (NX-01) unter Captain Jonathan Archer bei der Erforschung eines unbekannten Planeten in ein Minenfeld der Romulaner gerät und dabei schwer beschädigt wird. Plötzlich taucht ein fremdes Schiff auf und fordert die Enterprise auf, die Planetenumlaufbahn zu verlassen. Anhand ihrer Sprache identifiziert T'Pol der Wissenschaftsoffizier der Enterprise die Fremden als Romulaner. Da an der Außenhülle der Enterprise eine Mine haftet, kann die Enterprise nur langsam das Gebiet der Romulaner verlassen. Malcolm Reed versucht diese Mine zu entschärfen, wird aber dabei schwer verletzt. Schließlich tauchen zwei romulanischer Bird-of-Prey auf und zwingen endgültig die Enterprise das Gebiet zu verlassen. Dabei gibt es keinen Sichtkontakt zu den romulanischen Besatzungen; auch die Vulkanier wissen zu dieser Zeit nicht, dass hinter den Romulanern ein Schwestervolk steckt. ( ENT : Das Minenfeld )

Im Jahre 2154 ist der romulanische Agent Talok an der Verschwörung von Administrator V'Las beteiligt, der einen Krieg gegen das Andorianische Imperium auslösen will. Die genauen Pläne der Verschwörung sind unbekannt, sie gehen jedoch scheinbar von den Romulanern aus und haben die Wiedervereinigung mit Vulkan zum Ziel. Aufgrund der Reformation auf Vulkan scheitern diese Pläne jedoch und Talok zieht sich vorläufig von Vulkan zurück. ( ENT : Kir'Shara )

Ende des Jahres kommt es zur Marodeur-Krise , am 12. November 2154 wird das andorianische Kriegsschiff Kumari , das den andorianischen Botschafter nach Babel eskortiert, von einem Schiff angegriffen, welches offenbar tellaritischer Bauart ist. Die Enterprise , welche den den tellaritischen Botschafter nach Babel bringen soll, reagiert auf den Notruf und findet nur Trümmer der Kumari vor. Es gibt nur wenige Überlebende darunter Commander Thy'lek Shran . Die Andorianer machen darauf die Tellariten für den Angriff auf ihr Schiff verantwortlich, aber der tellaritische Botschafter Gral weist diese Vorwürfe zurück. Später wird die Enterprise von einem offenbar andorianischen Schiff angegriffen und ein rigelianisches von einem Erdenschiff . Als diese Vorfälle später verglichen werden, stellt sich heraus, dass alle angreifenden Schiffe dieselbe Energiesignatur aufweisen. Eben diese Signatur wurde zwei Jahre zuvor bei den romulanischen Bird of Preys registriert. Als plötzlich das unbekannte Schiff wieder auftaucht, begeben sich Commander Charles Tucker III und Lieutenant Malcolm Reed auf dieses Schiff und beginnen dieses zu untersuchen. Die beiden finden schließlich heraus, dass dieses Schiff unbemannt ist und von Romulus aus gesteuert wird. ( ENT : Babel )

Die Romulaner versuchen mit diesen Angriffen den Frieden in diesem Bereich der Galaxie zu destabilisieren um ihn später so besser erobern zu können. Aber die Menschen können die ehemals verfeindeten Andorianer, Tellariten und Vulkanier dazu bringen zusammenzuarbeiten. Die Völker bilden eine Allianz und stellen eine Flotte aus 128 Schiffen zusammen. Mit diesen Schiffen errichtet die Allianz ein Tachyongitter , um zusammen das romulanische Drohnenschiff aufzuspüren. Damit haben die Romulaner genau das Gegenteil erreicht, anstatt dass sich die Rassen bekämpfen, bilden diese eine Allianz und der Prototyp des romulanischen Drohnenschiffs wird vernichtet. Seit der Marodeur-Krise sehen die Romulaner in den Menschen eine Gefahr. Es kommt deswegen einige Jahre später um 2156 zum irdisch-romulanischen Krieg , bei diesem Krieg gibt es keinen Sichtkontakt zwischen Menschen und Romulanern. Bei diesem Krieg werden auch Atomwaffen eingesetzt, vermutlich um menschliche Kolonien anzugreifen. Der Krieg fügt beiden Seiten schwere Schäden und signifikante Verluste zu und breitet sich bis zur Erde aus. Im Jahr 2160 gipfelt er in der Schlacht von Cheron , welche die Menschen mit Hilfe der Andorianer, der Tellariten und der Vulkanier für sich entscheiden können. Der anschließend nur über Subraumkommunikation ausgehandelte Friedensvertrag beinhaltet eine Neutrale Zone zwischen dem Gebiet der Menschen und dem der Romulaner, in die beide Seiten nur in Notfällen eindringen dürfen. Die Romulaner ziehen sich nun für über 100 Jahre in die Isolation zurück und empfinden ihre Niederlage noch im 24. Jahrhundert als beschämend. ( TOS : Spock unter Verdacht ; TNG : Der Überläufer )

23. Jahrhundert [ Bearbeiten ]

Bis 2266 halten sich die Romulaner an den Friedensvertrag, welcher nach dem irdisch-romulanischen Krieg auf die Föderation ausgeweitet worden ist. Doch im Auftrag des Prätors greift ein Bird-of-Prey mehrere Außenposten der Föderation bzw. Sternenflotte an, um ihre neue militärische Stärke zu demonstrieren. Bei den Angriffen werden vier Außenposten der Föderation mit einer neuen Plasmawaffe vollständig vernichtet. Die USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) , unter dem Kommando von Captain James T. Kirk , welche zu dieser Zeit an der neutralen Zone patrouilliert, erhält einen Notruf von der Erdaußenstation 4 . Doch die Enterprise erreicht zwar den Außenposten, kann allerdings nur noch mit ansehen, wie der Außenposten von den Romulanern vernichtet wird. Zu der Zeit senden die Romulaner eine Nachricht über den Erfolg ihrer Mission an den Prätor, doch dieser Bericht wird von der Enterprise abgefangen. Anhand dieser Übertragung sehen die Menschen zum ersten Mal einen Romulaner und man stellt eine Ähnlichkeit zu den Vulkaniern fest. Kirk nimmt darauf die Verfolgung des Bird-of-Preys auf. Auch der Kommandant des Schiffes bemerkt, dass sein Schiff von der Enterprise verfolgt wird. Der Bird-of-Prey wird in mehre Kämpfe mit der Enterprise verwickelt. Als die Energievorräte jedoch zur Neige gehen, ist der Kommandant gezwungen sein Schiff zu vernichten, da er nicht kapitulieren will. Mit seinen letzten Wort zollt er gegenüber Kirk seinen Respekt und dass in anderen Realität die beiden wohl Freunde geworden wären. ( TOS : Spock unter Verdacht )

Im Jahr 2267 beginnen die Föderation, die Romulaner und die Klingonen gemeinsam den Planeten Nimbus III zu besiedeln. Das Projekt soll beweisen, dass die drei Mächte zusammenarbeiten und einen Planeten friedlich verwalten können. Aber das Projekt scheitert schnell, die Siedler beginnen sich auf dem Planeten wegen der knappen Ressourcen zu bekämpfen. Zwar werden bald darauf auf den Planeten Waffen verboten, aber die Siedler bauen sich eigene Waffen und bekämpfen sich weiter. ( Star Trek V: Am Rande des Universums )

Ende 2267 bricht die Enterprise den Vertrag und dringt in die Neutrale Zone ein. Die Enterprise steht zu der Zeit unter dem Kommando von Commodore Stocker . Da die Führungsoffiziere unter einem rapiden Alterungsprozess leiden, will Stocker diese zu Sternenbasis 10 bringen, damit diese dort behandelt werden können. Doch der unerfahrene Stocker durchquert die Neutrale Zone und kurz darauf wird die Enterprise von mehren Bird-of-Preys angegriffen. Stocker versucht zwar zu kapitulieren, doch die Romulaner zeigen keine Gnade. Im letzten Moment findet Doktor Leonard McCoy ein Heilmittel und kann den Alterungsprozess stoppen. Mit einer List gelingt es Captain Kirk, die Romulaner dazu zu bringen ihren Angriff abzubrechen. ( TOS : Wie schnell die Zeit vergeht )

2268 kommt es auf der romulanischen Forschungskolonie auf Chaltok IV zu einer Katastrophe. Bei einem Test mit polarischen Ionen , welche als neue Energiequellen dienen soll, kommt es zu einer Kettenreaktion und die Kolonie wird fast vollständig verwüstet. Danach geben die Romulaner die Erforschung von polarischen Ionen auf. ( VOY : Subraumspalten )

Zu dieser Zeit schließen die Romulaner die Klingonisch-Romulanische Allianz , durch die sie in den Besitz von klingonischen D7-Klasse -Kreuzern gelangen. Die Klingonen gelangen im Gegenzug in den Besitz der Tarntechnologie . ( TOS : Die unsichtbare Falle )

Im selben Jahr bekommt Kirk mit der Enterprise den Auftrag, eine Tarnvorichtung der Romulaner zu stehlen. Kirk gibt für diese Mission vor überarbeitet zu sein und fliegt mit der Enterprise in die Neutrale Zone, wo die Enterprise bald darauf von mehren romulanischen Schiffen eingekesselt wird. Commander Spock liefert daraufhin Kirk an die Romulaner aus und diese glauben, dass Kirk wahnsinnig geworden ist. Später gibt Spock vor, Kirk mit einem vulkanischen Todesgriff zu töten. Der scheinbar tote Kirk wird daraufhin auf die Enterprise zurück gebracht und wird dort von Doktor McCoy chirurgisch in einen Romulaner verändert. Kirk kehrt danach auf das Schiff der Romulaner zurück und es gelingt ihm, die Tarnvorrichtung zu stehlen. Chefingenieur Montgomery Scott installiert diese Tarnvorrichtung an Bord der Enterprise . Die Enterprise kann mit der aktivierten Tarnvorrichtung entkommen und Kirk gelingt es sogar eine hochrangige Romulanische Komandantin gefangen zu nehmen. ( TOS : Die unsichtbare Falle )

Ein Jahr später versuchen die Romulaner mit Hilfe eines Vendorianers die Enterprise in ihr Gebiet zu bringen, damit diese das Föderationsschiff übernehmen können. Als aber der Vendorianer beginnt die Sternenflotte zu unterstützen, müssen sich die Romulaner zurückziehen und die Enterprise kehrt in den Föderationsraum zurück. ( TAS : Der Überlebende )

2270 greifen drei romulanische Schiffe die Enterprise an. Die Enterprise flieht darauf in eine Energiewolke. Dabei wird die Enterprise von einem Energiewesen übernommen, welches mit der Crew seine Scherze treibt. Das Energiewesen erschafft ein riesiges Duplikat der Enterprise und legt somit auch die Romulaner rein. Die Romulaner sind über diesen Scherz sehr verärgert. Später gelingt es Kirk durch eine List die Enterprise von diesem Wesen zu befreien, allerdings übernimmt das Wesen die Schiffe der Romulaner und treibt mit ihnen seine Scherze. Mit der Zeit beginnen sich die Beziehungen zwischen den Romulanern und den Klingonen zu verschlechtern. Die Allianz zerbricht schließlich einige Jahre später. In der Schlacht von Klach D'Kel Brakt führt Kor die Klingonen zu einem großen Sieg gegen die Romulaner. ( DS9 : Der Blutschwur )

Im Jahr 2287 nimmt der abtrünnige Vulkanier Sybok den menschlichen und klingonischen Botschafter sowie die romulanische Botschafterin auf Nimbus III gefangen. Sybok und seine Anhänger hoffen, dass die jeweiligen Regierungen reagieren und ein Raumschiff senden, und so auf seine Forderungen eingehen werden. Später werden allerdings die Geiseln wieder von der Crew der USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-A) befreit. ( Star Trek V: Am Rande des Universums )

2293 ist der romulanische Botschafter Nanclus in die Khitomer-Verschwörung verstrickt, die den Frieden zwischen der Föderation und dem klingonischen Imperium torpedieren soll. Die Verschwörung wird allerdings von Captain Kirk und der Crew der Enterprise , sowie von Captain Hikaru Sulu und der Crew der USS Excelsior aufgedeckt. Als der romulanische Botschafter darauf fliehen will, wird dieser von Doktor McCoy aufgehalten und festgenommen. ( Star Trek VI: Das unentdeckte Land )

24. Jahrhundert [ Bearbeiten ]

Die zeit der isolation [ bearbeiten ].

Zu Anfang des 24. Jahrhunderts kommt es zur nächsten Konfrontation zwischen den Romulanern und der Föderation. Im Jahr 2311 werden mehrere tausend Föderationsbürger bei einer romulanischen Attacke getötet, man nennt dieses Ereignis den Tomed-Zwischenfall . Er führt zur Aushandlung des Vertrags von Algeron , der die neutrale Zone bestätigt und erweitert, sowie der Föderation die Entwicklung von Tarnvorrichtungen verbietet. In dieser Zeit verlassen die Romulaner bis auf wenige Ausnahmen nicht ihr Territorium. ( TNG : Die neutrale Zone , Der Überläufer , Das Pegasus-Projekt )

2344 überfallen die Romulaner den klingonischen Außenposten auf Narendra III , jedoch können sie von der zufällig in der Nähe befindlichen USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-C) so lange aufgehalten werden, bis Verstärkung der Klingonen eintrifft. Die Enterprise wird bei dieser Schlacht um Narendra III zerstört und ein Großteil ihrer Crew kommt dabei ums Leben. Da die Klingonen diesen Eingriff jedoch als heldenhaft ansehen, führt er unter anderem zu einer lang anhaltenden Phase des Friedens zwischen den den Klingonen und der Föderation, sowie einer strategischen Allianz, um sich gemeinsam der Bedrohung durch die Romulaner zu stellen. 2346 kommt es zum nächsten Überfall auf einen klingonischen Außenposten auf dem Planeten Khitomer , der als das Khitomer-Massaker in die Geschichte eingeht. Dabei werden praktisch alle 4000 Klingonen getötet, es gibt nur wenige Überlebende wie Worf , Sohn des Mogh . Im Nachhinein stellt sich heraus, dass dieser Angriff durch den Verrat eines Klingonen aus dem Haus des Duras , Ja'rod , ermöglicht wurde. ( TNG : Die Sünden des Vaters )

Einige überlebende Klingonen aus dem Khitomer-Massaker werden in ein Lager auf dem Carraya IV gebracht. Das Lager steht unter der Leitung des Romulaners Tokath . Die Romulaner hoffen mit diesen Gefangenen ein Lösegeld von den Klingonen einzufordern. Da das klingonische Reich kein Interesse an einem Gefangenenaustausch zeigt, bekommt Tokath den Befehl die gefangenen Klingonen hinzurichten . Doch Tokath setzt sich bei der romulanischen Regierung dafür ein, dass die Klingonen am Leben bleiben. Dadurch, dass die Klingonen in Gefangenschaft geraten sind, können sie nie wieder nach Hause, weil sie sonst in Schande leben würden. Die Klingonen leben nun zusammen mit den Romulanern in dem Lager. Tokath heiratet sogar die Klingonin Gi'ral und die beiden haben zusammen eine Tochter Ba'el . ( TNG : Der Moment der Erkenntnis, Teil II )

Im Jahr 2351 erforscht der Romulaner Telek R'Mor mit einem Wissenschaftsschiff den Weltraum. Dabei entdeckt er ein Mikrowurmloch und nimmt Kontakt mit einem Föderationsschiff auf. Das Föderationsraumschiff heißt USS Voyager und befindet sich laut der Aussage ihres Captains Kathryn Janeway im Delta-Quadranten . Telek R'Mor glaubt dies aber nicht, da er weiß, dass kein Raumschiff so weit entfernt sein kann. Doch auf die Bitten von Janeway überprüft er dies und findet heraus, dass die Voyager sich wirklich im Delta-Quadranten befindet. Später beamt Telek R'Mor sogar an Bord der Voyager , allerdings stellt er dort fest, dass er auch 20 Jahre in die Zukunft gereist ist. Darauf kehrt Telek R'Mor in seine Zeit und auf sein Schiff zurück und erfüllt Janeways einzige Bitte, er wird in 20 Jahren die Botschaften der Voyager -Crew an die Föderation übermitteln. Um die Zeitlinie nicht zu gefährden, behält Telek R'Mor diesen Kontakt geheim. ( VOY : Das Nadelöhr )

Nach der insgesamt 53jährigen Isolationsphase kommt es 2364 zu einem erneuten Kontakt mit der Föderation, als mehrere Kolonien des romulanischen Sternenimperiums sowie der Föderation von einem zu diesem Zeitpunkt unbekannten Aggressor angegriffen und vernichtet werden. Die Romulaner untersuchen diese Vorfälle und treffen dabei auf die USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-D) , welche ebenfalls diese Vorfälle untersucht. Der Romulaner Commander Tebok handelt sogar mit Captain Jean-Luc Picard einen Informationsaustausch aus, um herauszufinden, wer für diesen Angriff verantwortlich ist. Ein Jahr später findet die Enterprise im Delta-Quadranten auf einem Planeten die gleichen Zerstörungen vor wie in der neutralen Zone, für welche schließlich die Borg verantwortlich gemacht werden. Ab diesem Punkt mischen sich die Romulaner, die bis dahin durch interne Angelegenheiten beschäftigt gewesen sind, wieder aktiver in die Ereignisse im Alpha-Quadranten ein. ( TNG : Die neutrale Zone )

Provokationen [ Bearbeiten ]

Im Jahr 2365 kommt es zum ersten Konflikt zwischen Föderation und Romulanern. In diesem Jahr versuchen die Romulaner die Kontrolle über das Iconianische Portal zu übernehmen, dabei wird das romulanische Schiff Haakona durch eine iconianische Sonde schwer beschädigt. Der Enterprise gelingt es, das Portal zu vernichten und sie helfen auch den Romulanern, bevor ihr Schiff vernichtet wird. ( TNG : Die Iconia-Sonden )

Im Jahr 2366 stürzt das romulanische Aufklärungsschiff Pi auf den Planeten Galorndon Core . Die Romulaner haben einen Spionageauftrag . Zu der Zeit befindet sich auch die Enterprise bei dem Planeten. Der romulanische Kommandant Tomalak kommt mit seinem Schiff hinzu. Er droht mit Krieg, wenn er seine Offiziere nicht wiederbekommt. Durch die Zusammenarbeit von Geordi La Forge und dem Romulaner Bochra , welche beide auf dem Planeten um ihr Leben kämpfen, kann der Krieg verhindert werden. Bochra versichert Tomalak, dass er La Forge sein Leben verdankt, darauf zieht Tomalak ab. ( TNG : Auf schmalem Grat )

Kurz darauf kommt es in der romulanischen Regierung zu einem Machtwechsel. Die neue Regierung will den Vertrag von Algeron nicht länger achten. ( TNG : Der Überläufer )

Ungefähr zu dieser Zeit gerät die Enterprise zusammen mit dem romulanischen Überläufer, dem ehemaligen Admiral Alidar Jarok in eine Falle von Tomalak. Er kann so beweisen, dass Jarok ein Verräter ist und will die Enterprise als Beute mit nach Romulus nehmen. Mit Hilfe von klingonischen Verbündeten und ihren Schiffen kann die Enterprise entkommen. 2367 gelingt es den Romulanern erfolgreich, ihre Spionin Selok ins Reich zurück zu holen. ( TNG : Datas Tag )

Ende des Jahres versuchen die Romulaner das gute Verhältnis zwischen der Föderation und dem klingonischen Reich zu zerstören, indem sie Lieutenant Commander La Forge von der Enterprise entführen, um ihn mittels einer Manipulation seines VISORs dazu zu bringen, auf der Enterprise einen Anschlag auf den klingonischen Gouverneur Vagh zu verüben. Dabei werden sie von dem klingonischen Botschafter Kell unterstützt. Picard gelingt es aber diese Täuschung aufzudecken. ( TNG : Verräterische Signale )

Später in diesem Jahr nehmen die Romulaner Einfluss auf den klingonischen Bürgerkrieg , indem sie das Haus des Duras unterstützen. Dies wird jedoch von der Sternenflotte aufgedeckt, die Romulaner müssen ihre Unterstützung einstellen und so verliert die Allianz um das Haus Duras den Bürgerkrieg. 2369 erfährt Worf von den Überlebenden auf Carraya IV und bringt den dort geborenen Kindern die klingonische Kultur bei. Er nimmt sie darauf in die Heimatwelt mit, verspricht aber, das Lager geheim zu halten. ( TNG : Der Moment der Erkenntnis, Teil II )

Mitte 2370 erfahren die Romulaner, dass die Föderation den Vertrag von Algeron gebrochen hat. Eine geheime Gruppe der Sternenflotte entwickelt 2358 eine Interphasen-Tarnvorrichtung . Captain Picard kann diesen Vorfall Jahre später aufdecken und berichtet dies sofort den Romulanern. Picards Ehrlichkeit verhindert einen diplomatischen Konflikt. ( TNG : Das Pegasus-Projekt )

Untergrundbewegung [ Bearbeiten ]

Föderationsbotschafter Spock reist 2368 nach Romulus, um sich dort mit Senator Pardek zu treffen, einem Repräsentanten einer Untergrundbewegung, die die vulkanische Philosophie verbreiten und auf lange Sicht eine Wiedervereinigung der beiden Völker herstellen will. Es stellt sich jedoch heraus, dass Pardek – zusammen mit Prokonsul Neral und Sela – diese Situation nur ausnutzen wollen, um eine Invasionsstreitmacht nach Vulkan zu bringen, um den Planeten zu erobern. Durch das Eingreifen der Enterprise und von Captain Jean-Luc Picard und Spock auf Romulus können diese Pläne jedoch vereitelt werden. Spock verbleibt auf Romulus, um die Bewegung weiter zu unterstützen. ( TNG : Wiedervereinigung? Teil I , Wiedervereinigung? Teil II )

Ein Jahr später gelingt es der Untergrundbewegung, drei hochrangige Überläufer in den Raum der Föderation zu schmuggeln. ( TNG : Das Gesicht des Feindes )

Dominion-Krieg [ Bearbeiten ]

2371 genehmigen die Romulaner der Föderation, eine ihrer Tarnvorrichtungen auf der USS Defiant einzusetzen, im Gegenzug erhalten die Romulaner Geheimdienstinformationen der Föderation über das Dominion . ( DS9 : Die Suche, Teil I )

Die Romulaner sehen in dem Dominion eine große Gefahr. Um ihr Imperium vor einer Invasion zu schützen versuchen sie kurz darauf das Bajoranische Wurmloch zu vernichten, damit das Dominion nicht in den Alpha-Quadranten eindringen kann. Die Romulaner werden aber von Commander Benjamin Sisko aufgehalten. ( DS9 : Der Visionär )

Noch im selben Jahr schließen der Tal Shiar und sein cardassianisches Gegenstück, der Obsidianische Orden , ein geheimes Bündnis, von dem die Regierungen der beiden Mächte nichts erfahren. Ziel ist die Vernichtung der Heimatwelt der Gründer im Omarion-Nebel , um die Bedrohung durch das Dominion zu neutralisieren. Dazu bauen die beiden Geheimdienste heimlich eine Flotte von etwa 40 Schiffen (je zur Hälfte der D'deridex - und der Keldon -Klasse ), die durch Tarnvorrichtungen verborgen in den Gamma-Quadrant vordringen soll.

Dies gelingt auch, im Omarion-Nebel findet die Flotte jedoch nur einen verlassenen Planeten vor, es stellt sich heraus, dass das Dominion eine Falle aufgebaut hat und so wird die cardassianisch-romulanische Flotte von einer Dominion-Übermacht angegriffen und vernichtet (siehe auch Schlacht im Omarion-Nebel ). Verantwortlich ist der Gründer , der den romulanischen Geheimdienstoffizier Lovok ersetzt hat und den ehemaligen Direktor des Obsidianischen Ordens, Enabran Tain , zur Mitwirkung überreden konnte. Mit dieser Aktion wollen die Gründer die beiden Mächte vorführen und demoralisieren, so dass sie sich den weiteren Plänen des Dominion nicht mehr in den Weg stellen würden. Die Romulaner werden auch 2372 Opfer der neuen klingonischen Aggression. Nachdem die Klingonen und die Föderation in einen Krieg verwickelt wurden, beginnen die Klingonen den Angriff auf romulanische Außenposten. ( DS9 : Der Hippokratische Eid )

Als das Dominion 2373 in den Alpha-Quadranten eindringt, schicken die Romulaner einige Warbirds nach Deep Space Nine um die Föderation und die Klingonen gegen einen Angriff des Dominions zu unterstützen. ( DS9 : Im Lichte des Infernos )

Nachdem die Cardassianische Union 2373 eine Allianz mit dem Dominion eingeht, beschließen die Romulaner einige Monate später einen Nichtangriffspakt mit dem Dominion. Dieser Pakt gewährt Dominion-Schiffen freie Passage. ( DS9 : Zu den Waffen! )

Auch nach dem Ausbruch des Dominion-Kriegs kommt es zu Konflikten zwischen den Romulanern und der Föderation. 2374 entert eine romulanische Einheit den Föderations- Prototyp USS Prometheus und tötet die Crew, um das Schiff zu entführen und die neuen Technologien zu erforschen. ( VOY : Flaschenpost )

Während des Dominion-Kriegs steht es schlecht für die Allianz aus der Föderation und den Klingonen, daher beschließt Captain Benjamin Sisko auf Deep Space 9 alles zu tun, um die Romulaner auf die Seite der Allianz zu ziehen. Mit Hilfe des Exil-Cardassianers Elim Garak lässt er Beweise für Angriffspläne des Dominions auf das romulanische Sternenimperium fälschen und übergibt diese Senator Vreenak , der den Nichtangriffspakt ausgehandelt hat und eine Allianz mit dem Dominion befürwortet.

Vreenaks Leute erkennen jedoch die Fälschung als solche und der Senator ist sehr verärgert über den Täuschungsversuch, den er dem Senat bei seiner Rückkehr als Beweis der Misstrauenswürdigkeit der Föderation vorlegen will. Dazu kommt es jedoch nicht, da sein Schiff auf dem Weg nach Romulus explodiert . Schuld ist eine Bombe an Bord, die Garak dort versteckt hat, als Absicherung für ein Scheitern des Plans. Diese weist eine Dominion-Signatur auf, und so glauben die Romulaner, das Dominion habe Vreenak ermordet, um die Angriffspläne zu vertuschen. Daraufhin erklären die Romulaner dem Dominion umgehend den Krieg. ( DS9 : In fahlem Mondlicht )

Die Romulaner beteiligen sich Ende 2374 auch an der Ersten Schlacht von Chin'toka . Obwohl die Romulaner einige Schiffe verlieren, gewinnt die Allianz die Schlacht gegen das Dominion. ( DS9 : Tränen der Propheten )

Anfang 2375 haben die Romulaner eine Repräsentanz auf Deep Space 9, geführt von Senatorin Kimara Cretak . Diese sorgt dafür, dass Waffen auf dem bajoranischen Mond Derna stationiert werden. Dies verstößt jedoch gegen bajoranische Sicherheitsinteressen, und so organisieren die Bajoraner unter Colonel Kira eine Blockade des romulanischen Stützpunkts, die Cretak zum Einlenken und Abzug der Waffen bewegt. Später in diesem Jahr unterstützt die Sternenflotte eine konspirative Operation der Sektion 31 mit dem Ziel der Entmachtung Cretaks, da diese als mögliche Befürworterin eines Friedens mit dem Dominion gesehen wurde. Ihre Kaltstellung würde den heimlichen Föderationsvertrauten Koval in eine bessere Position rücken. Der Plan gelingt schließlich und sichert so die aufgrund der Verluste im Krieg von einigen bedeutenden Romulanern in Frage gestellte Allianz. ( DS9 : Unter den Waffen schweigen die Gesetze )

Bei der Dritten Schlacht von Chin'toka erleiden die Romulaner, wie die übrige Flotte eine große Niederlage, alle romulanischen Schiffe in dieser Schlacht werden vernichtet. ( DS9 : Im Angesicht des Bösen )

Die Romulaner sind auch Ende 2375 an der Schlacht um Cardassia beteiligt. Bei dieser Schlacht wird das romulanische Flaggschiff vernichtet. Als die Flotte Cardassia erreicht, bekommen die Romulaner und die Cardassianer, welche sich der Allianz angeschlossen haben, den Auftrag, die übrigen Dominionschiffe zu vernichten. Aber das Dominion kapituliert kurz darauf. Die Romulaner sind auch bei der Unterzeichnung des Friedensvertrags zwischen der Allianz und dem Dominion anwesend. Remanischer Staatsstreich [ Bearbeiten ]

Der Romulanische Senat erwägt 2379 Handelsbeziehungen mit Celes II über Dilithium einzugehen, da die remanischen Minen seit Monaten die Abbauquoten nicht erfüllen.

Möglicherweise hat dies mit den Putschvorbereitungen der Remaner und weiteren Teilen des romulanischen Militärs zu tun. Insbesondere der geheimen Entwicklung und des Baus der Scimitar sowie ihrer Thalaronwaffe .

Das Militär wird dadurch überzeugt, die relativ friedliche Haltung zur Föderation aufgeben zu wollen. Der Putsch beginnt mit der Ablehnung des Praetors Hiren gegenüber den Militärs, den Kriegsplan der Remaner zu unterstützen.

Im Verlauf des Putsches gelangt der Mensch Shinzon als Führer der Remaner an die Macht, indem er den Senat inklusive des Praetors von der verbündeten Senatorin Tal'Aura mit einem Thalaron-Emitter ermorden lässt. Danach ernennt er sich mit Unterstützung des Militärs, welches in großer Zahl wichtige Einrichtungen auf Romulus besetzt und den Widerstand bekämpft, selbst zum Praetor. Shinzon selbst sieht sich als Remaner , da er unter remanischer Obhut aufgewachsen ist, nachdem der Plan, Captain Jean-Luc Picard (dessen Klon er ist) durch ihn zu ersetzen, um die Sternenflotte zu infiltrieren, aufgegeben wurde. Da Shinzon in der Föderation die größte Bedrohung für die Machtposition des romulanischen Imperiums sieht, beschließt er, die Erde, den Hauptplaneten des Weltenbundes, mittels der Scimitar beziehungsweise deren Emittern für Thalaronstrahlung anzugreifen und die gesamte Bevölkerung zu töten. Das Schiff wird jedoch von der USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-E) – zusammen mit romulanischen Warbirds , da einige Offiziere auf romulanischer Seite Shinzons Alleingang nicht gutheißen, aufgehalten und schließlich dank des zweiten Offiziers der Enterprise zerstört. Shinzon findet hierbei den Tod. Dieses Ereignis hinterlässt ein Machtvakuum, dessen Auswirkungen vorerst ungeklärt bleiben. ( Star Trek: Nemesis )

Der Untergang von Romulus [ Bearbeiten ]

Im Jahr 2387 explodiert ein Stern in der Nähe von Romulus und wird zu einer Supernova . Die Druckwelle droht auch das romulanische System und Romulus zu vernichten. Botschafter Spock bietet den Romulanern seine Hilfe an. Die Vulkanier rüsten ihr schnellstes Schiff mit roter Materie aus. Durch die rote Materie soll ein schwarzes Loch entstehen, welches die Druckwelle aufhalten soll. Aber Spock kommt zu spät, ihm gelingt es zwar mit Hilfe der roten Materie, die Druckwelle der Supernova aufzuhalten, aber Romulus wird trotzdem durch die Druckwelle vernichtet. Der Romulaner Nero befindet sich zu der Zeit mit seinem Bergbauschiff Narada in der Nähe von Spocks Schiff. Nero macht Spock für die Vernichtung von Romulus verantwortlich. Er greift daraufhin Spocks Schiff an. Während des Kampfes werden beide Schiffe in das schwarze Loch gezogen. Nero gelangt in die Vergangenheit und erschafft dort eine alternative Zeitlinie. Dort bezeichnet sich Nero als der letzte Romulaner und will nun Rache nehmen an Spock, den Vulkaniern und der Föderation, um danach ein neues Romulus aufzubauen. ( Star Trek )

Alternative Geschichte [ Bearbeiten ]

Im Jahr 2371 wird durch das Eingreifen von Sisko und Bashir in der Vergangenheit der Erde , der Bell-Aufstand verhindert. Aus den nachfolgenden Ereignissen wird die Föderation nie gegründet. Im Jahr 2371 dehnt sich das romulanische Imperium bis nach Alpha Centauri aus, dem Nachbarsystem der Erde. ( DS9 : Gefangen in der Vergangenheit, Teil I , Gefangen in der Vergangenheit, Teil II )

Im selben Jahr zerstört ein Warbird Deep Space 9 und das Bajoranische Wurmloch . Der Dominion-Krieg findet nicht statt. Durch das Eingreifen von Chief Miles O'Brien wurde die Zeitlinie wieder korrigiert. ( DS9 : Der Visionär )

Logbuch : Medizinischer Tagesbericht der Enterprise Sternzeit 5027.3 Es spricht Doktor Leonard McCoy Ich mache mir Sorgen um Captain Kirk. Er zeigt deutliche Symptome nervlicher und seelischer Überbelastung.

Captain Kirk verhält sich äußerst gereizt und aggressiv gegenüber Chekov und Spock, die gerade auf der Brücke Dienst tun.

Logbuch : Als Mediziner führe ich die Reizbarkeit Captain Kirks auf die Tatsache zurück, das die Enterprise zu lange ohne Ablösung im Raum patrouilliert. Captain Kirk widersetzt sich einer psychiatrischen Behandlung.

Das Verhalten des Captains scheint in eine klare Unzurechnungsfähigkeit überzugehen, als Kirk auf einmal befiehlt , die Neutrale Zone , welche die Grenze zwischen der Föderation und dem Romulanischen Sternenimperium bildet, zu verlassen und auf romulanisches Territorium einzudringen.

Es dauert nicht lange, da ist die Enterprise von drei romulanischen Kriegsschiffen umzingelt. Alle drei sind klingonischer Bauart. Dies geschieht überraschend. Spock hat kurz vorher noch freien Weltraum gemeldet, und auf einmal sind die Schiffe da.

Kirk und Spock werden auf das romulanische Flaggschiff gebeamt , wo sie von der Flottenkommandantin empfangen werden. Diese findet sogleich Gefallen an Spock. Damit kein falsches Licht auf die Enterprise und die Föderation fällt, erzählt Spock ihr, wie es zur Verletzung des Territoriums gekommen sei, nämlich dadurch, dass Captain Kirk aus reiner Geltungssucht eine Kursänderung befohlen habe und zurzeit nicht zurechnungsfähig sei. Zur Bestätigung wird Dr. McCoy herbeigerufen. Die romulanische Kommandantin macht keinen Hehl aus ihrer Absicht, die Enterprise in den Dienst der romulanischen Flotte zu stellen und Spock gleich mit. Dieser soll auf der Enterprise das Kommando übernehmen. McCoy traut seinen Ohren nicht, als er das hört. Kirk bekommt daraufhin einen Wutanfall und greift Spock an – woraufhin dieser den vulkanischen Todesgriff anwendet.

Kirk ist aber nicht tot . Es handelt sich sowohl bei seiner nervlichen Überspanntheit als auch beim Todesgriff lediglich um eine Farce, welche anfangs nur Kirk und Spock, später auch Dr. McCoy bekannt ist. Dem Sternenflottenhauptquartier war nämlich zu Ohren gekommen, dass die Romulaner ein neues Tarnverfahren entwickelt haben. Kirk und Spock sollen dem auf den Grund gehen, dabei aber tunlichst die Enterprise und auch die Föderation aus dem Spiel lassen. Dass der Captain noch lebt, soll vorerst auch gegenüber der Besatzung geheim gehalten werden.

Kirk als Romulaner

Kirk unterzieht sich einer plastischen Operation , welche ihn wie einen Romulaner aussehen lässt. Bekleidet mit der Uniform einer der beiden romulanischen Geiseln, die als Austausch an Bord gekommen sind, schmuggelt er sich undercover auf das romulanische Flaggschiff und sucht die Tarnvorrichtung. Dabei nimmt er mit Spock, der noch bei der romulanischen Kommandantin weilt, Kontakt auf. Dieser Funkkontakt wird indes auf der Brücke des Schiffes registriert und auch lokalisiert. Spock wird festgenommen, während Kirk, welcher die Tarnvorrichtung gefunden hat, rechtzeitig zur Enterprise zurück gebeamt wird.

Logbuch : Computerlogbuch Nummer 1 der Enterprise Sternzeit 5027.5 Commander Kirk Mister Scott hat 15 Minuten Zeit, um die Tarnvorrichtung der Romulanier einzubauen. Mister Spock versucht, die Romulanier so lange hinzuhalten.

Spock soll wegen Spionage zum Tode verurteilt werden. Er erbittet sich das Vorrecht auf Selbstverteidigung. Er tut es, um Zeit zu gewinnen. Die Rechnung geht in der letzten Minute auf. Kurz vor dem Ende der Verteidigung wird auch er vom Transporter der Enterprise erfasst und zurückgeholt – zusammen mit der romulanischen Kommandantin.

Scotty ist es inzwischen gelungen, trotz Schwierigkeiten hinsichtlich der Kompatibilität die Tarnvorrichtung in der Enterprise zu installieren und zu aktivieren. Die Enterprise entkommt so den romulanischen Schiffen und erreicht wohlbehalten die Neutrale Zone. Spock verspricht der Kommandantin, dass sie unversehrt zu ihrem Volk zurückgeschickt wird. Kirk, der noch immer die spitzen Ohren trägt, wird von McCoy in die Krankenstation bestellt. Er will ihm dieselben "abschneiden".

In der Neufassung dieser Episode sichtet Spock, wie in der Originalfassung auch, als die Enterprise von romulanischen Schiffen eingekreist wird, drei Schlachtkreuzer klingonischer Bauart. Tatsächlich sind es aber nur zwei. Dies kam zu Stande, da ein klingonischer D7-Kreuzer in der Neufassung gegen einen romulanischen Bird-of-Prey ersetzt wurde, die Textzeilen allerdings die gleichen blieben.

In der Folge Wie schnell die Zeit vergeht wird die Enterprise von romulanischen Bird-of-Preys attackiert, weil sie, auf Grund von Commodore Stockers Befehl, in die neutrale Zone eingetreten ist. In dieser Episode patrouilliert die Enterprise jedoch innerhalb der neutralen Zone.

Als die Kommandantin der romulanischen Flotte Spock dazu auffordert, sich selbst zu verteidigen, nennt sie ihn, zumindest in der deutschen Synchronfassung, Lieutenant , obgleich er in Wirklichkeit einen höheren Dienstgrad bekleidet ( Commander ), vergleiche auch Epigonen .

In der deutschen Synchronfassung dieser Folge wird „ Romulaner “ mit Romulanier übersetzt.
