Iceland's south coast stretches from the Reykjanes peninsula in the west all the way to East Iceland . At just a 1–1.5 hour drive away, the western end of the south coast is closest to Reykjavík. From the Icelandic capital, you can follow the Ring Road (Route 1) along the coastline.

Being so close to the capital makes it the ideal region to explore on a multi-day tour from Reykjavík . Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach - A Volcanic Wonder

Prepare to be amazed by the world-famous Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach. The black sand beach is a very popular stop when visiting the south coast of Iceland. Take a memorable stroll along the volcanic black sand, surrounded by towering basalt formations and powerful Atlantic waves crashing upon the shores. Keep an eye out for the craggy rock formations just offshore, said to be petrified trolls!

Formation of the Black Sand Beach

The formation of Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach is an extraordinary natural phenomenon that dates back to ancient volcanic activity. The beach's jet-black sand is a result of the erosion of basaltic lava, which was formed when molten lava cooled rapidly upon contact with the ocean. Over time, this volcanic material was broken down into fine grains, creating the unique black sand that covers the beach.

The beach's iconic basalt columns are another fascinating feature that adds to its allure. These hexagonal pillars were formed through the slow cooling and contraction of lava flows, resulting in the characteristic geometric shapes. The mesmerizing sight of these towering columns, coupled with the contrast of the black sand, creates a surreal and otherworldly atmosphere.

Reynisfjara's formation is a testament to the power and beauty of nature, showcasing the intricate processes that have shaped the Earth over millions of years. It serves as a reminder of Iceland's volcanic origins and the constant evolution of our planet.

Unique features of Reynisfjara

Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach is renowned for its unique features fromed from volcanic eruptions, which set it apart from other beaches around the world. One of the most striking aspects is the presence of Reynisdrangar, the basalt sea stacks that rise dramatically from the sea. These towering formations, standing up to 66 meters tall, create a captivating visual spectacle and provide a stunning backdrop for photographers and nature enthusiasts alike. The features are all the result of old volcanic eruptions.

Another notable feature of Reynisfjara is the impressive basalt cave known as Hálsanefshellir. Located near the beach, this cave offers a glimpse into the ancient geological history of the area. As you explore its dark chambers, you'll be surrounded by the echoes of crashing waves and the play of light filtering through the narrow openings, creating an ethereal experience.

The picturesque cliffs that frame Reynisfjara Beach are yet another unique aspect of this volcanic eruptions wonder. Carved by the relentless force of the Atlantic Ocean, these cliffs exhibit fascinating rock formations and intricate patterns, showcasing the ever-changing nature of the coastal landscape.

Safety precautions for visiting Reynisfjara

While Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach is undeniably beautiful, it's important to be aware of the potential dangers that come with visiting this natural wonder. The powerful waves and unpredictable currents of the Atlantic Ocean can pose a significant risk to unsuspecting visitors. It is crucial to exercise caution and adhere to the following safety precautions:

Stay away from the water's edge : The waves at Reynisfjara can be deceptively powerful and can easily sweep you off your feet. It's essential to keep a safe distance from the water's edge and never turn your back on the ocean.

Beware of sneaker waves : Sneaker waves, also known as rogue waves, can unexpectedly surge ashore with tremendous force. Always be vigilant and watch out for any signs of unusual wave patterns or sudden changes in the water's behavior.

Respect the warning signs : The beach is equipped with warning signs that indicate the potential dangers. Take these signs seriously and follow any instructions or recommendations provided.

Keep an eye on children : Children should be closely supervised at all times when visiting Reynisfjara. The strong currents and steep cliffs can pose a significant risk to their safety.

By being cautious and respectful of the ocean's power, you can enjoy the beauty of Reynisfjara while ensuring your safety and the safety of those around you. Don´t be afraid to ask your tour guide if you have questions.

Wildlife at Reynisfjara

Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach is not only a haven for geology enthusiasts but also boasts a diverse range of wildlife. The rocky cliffs provide nesting grounds for various seabird species, including puffins, fulmars, and guillemots. These graceful birds can be observed soaring above the cliffs or diving into the ocean in search of food.

The beach itself is home to a variety of marine life, with seals occasionally spotted basking on the rocks or swimming close to the shore. If you're lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of whales or dolphins in the distance as they navigate the deep waters of the Atlantic.

For nature lovers, Reynisfjara offers a unique opportunity to witness the interconnectedness of land and sea and to appreciate the delicate balance of ecosystems thriving in this volcanic environment.

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon - A Glacial Paradise

One of the most iconic attractions on the South Coast is the famous Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. Witness the meeting of the glacier Breiðamerkurjökull and the ocean as giant pieces of ice calve from the glacier and float serenely out to sea. Nearby, at Diamond Beach, you'll find glittering fragments of icebergs carved into stunning shapes by the wind and waves.

Formation and geographical features of Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon is a result of the retreat of the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier. As the glacier melts, large blocks of ice break off and float in the lagoon, creating a stunning display of icebergs. The glacial waters, sourced from the Vatnajökull ice cap, are incredibly clear and take on a mesmerizing blue hue. The lagoon is surrounded by black sand beaches, contrasting the pristine icebergs and creating a unique and picturesque landscape.

The lagoon is constantly changing due to the movement of the icebergs. As they float towards the mouth of the lagoon, they eventually make their way to the Atlantic Ocean, creating a dynamic and ever-evolving environment. The size and shape of the icebergs vary greatly, with some towering several meters above the water, while others are smaller and more delicate.

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon is not only visually stunning but also serves as an important research site for scientists studying glacial retreat and the effects of climate change. As the glaciers continue to melt, the lagoon is expected to grow in size, making it an even more significant natural phenomenon.

Unique wildlife and flora at Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon is not only a glacial paradise for humans but also a haven for various wildlife species. One of the most iconic inhabitants of the lagoon is the Atlantic seal. These curious creatures can often be seen basking on the floating ice or swimming gracefully in the glacial waters. Visitors can witness these majestic animals up close during boat tours of the lagoon, providing a truly unforgettable experience.

In addition to seals, Jökulsárlón is a popular spot for birdwatching enthusiasts. The lagoon attracts a wide variety of bird species, including Arctic terns, great skuas, and puffins. The sight of these birds soaring above the icebergs is a true spectacle and adds to the overall enchantment of the lagoon.

The flora surrounding Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon is sparse but resilient. The harsh conditions of the glacier tongue environment have given rise to unique plant species that have adapted to the extreme cold and limited nutrients. Mosses, lichens, and small flowering plants can be found scattered across the black sand beaches, adding a touch of color to the stark landscape.

Activities and attractions at Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon in Southern Iceland

There are numerous activities and attractions that allow visitors to fully immerse themselves in the beauty of Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. One of the most popular options is a boat tour of the lagoon. Hop aboard a zodiac or amphibian boat and navigate through the icebergs, getting up close and personal with these natural wonders. The stillness of the water, the towering icebergs, and the distant sound of cracking ice create a sense of serenity that is hard to find elsewhere. Be sure to bring your camera and capture the beauty of Jökulsárlón in all its glory.

The Formation of Diamond Beach

Diamond Beach owes its existence to the nearby Breiðamerkurjökull glacier, which is a part of the larger Vatnajökull glacier. As the glacier slowly advances, chunks of ice break off and float downstream towards the Atlantic Ocean. These icebergs then get washed ashore, adorning the volcanic black sand beach with their presence.

The black sand is a result of volcanic activity in the area, creating a stark contrast against the translucent icebergs. The constant interaction between the icebergs and the waves shapes them into various forms and sizes, making each visit to Diamond Beach a unique experience.

Unique Features of Diamond Beach

What sets Diamond Beach apart is the ethereal beauty of the icebergs against the dark sand. The icebergs come in different shades of white and blue, and their smooth surfaces reflect the sunlight, creating a dazzling display of colors. As the waves crash onto the beach, they gently polish the ice formations, making them glisten like radiant diamonds.

No two icebergs are the same, and each one has its own unique shape and texture. Some icebergs are small and delicate, while others are massive and imposing. Visitors can spend hours exploring the beach, marveling at the intricate patterns and details of the ice formations.

Join this small group minibus day tour of Iceland’s South Coast. Witness glaciers, volcanoes, waterfalls and the famous Reynisfjara black sand beach on this trip. This tour is perfect for those wanting the best value tour focused on exploring the best spots along Iceland’s magnificent South Coast.

On this tour, you'll see the stunning waterfalls of Seljlandsfoss and Skogafoss, the towering white glacier ice caps, mighty volcanoes, charming Icelandic farms on rolling hillsides, and even some cute puffin colonies if visiting in the summer. The tour covers plenty of stunning sites and will take approximately 10 hours to complete. Keep your camera poised for all the fantastic photo opportunities along your journey.

If you are staying in a guesthouse or a hotel in Reykjavík, you'll be picked up in the morning before starting your journey to explore the amazing South Coast. To ensure you enjoy all of the sites along the way in cosy comfort, this tour is for small groups only – there will never be more than 19 people per group. Make sure to ask any and all questions you have about Icelandic culture, nature and history to your knowledgable guide.

First, you’ll stop at two of South Iceland's most impressive waterfalls, Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss, the former being one of Iceland's most powerful waterfalls, sought out by locals and travellers alike.

Seljalandsfoss is a picturesque cascade, famed for its walking path which allows you to walk behind it in the summer months. Standing behind the thunderous waterfall makes for a surreal and exciting experience. There, you'll encounter an unmatched perspective, as you look out through the pouring water to the surrounding landscapes of green fields and towering lava cliffs.

After visiting South Iceland's two water giants, you’ll make your way to the stunning Reynisfjara black sand beach near the small town of Vík. This beach is famed for its vibrant birdlife and beautiful landscape. There, you are likely to see puffins swarming in search of food around the pyramid-shaped basalt columns that make up Reynisfjara's cliffs during the summer months.

Look out to sea near the shore for a view of the spectacularly shaped sea stacks called Reynisdrangar. Folklore has it that these sea stacks were trolls turned to stone by light having failed to find refuge quick enough.

During the drive to these attractions, you'll see both the mighty Sólheimajökull glacier and the notorious Eyjafjallajökull glacier volcano whose 2010 eruption brought European air traffic to a standstill for days.

For your convenience, this tour is operated in brand new minibus with free Wi-Fi onboard. Your experienced guide will tell you stories about the locations and answer all your questions. You'll taste traditional Icelandic snacks, and there will be a stop for lunch so that you won't get hungry.

Don't miss out on this extraordinary opportunity to see Iceland's magical South Coast.

Check availability by choosing a date and book your Iceland South Coast adventure today.

SOUTH COAST HIGHLIGHTS

On this South Coast adventure, we set out to explore the most visited attractions in the land of fire and ice. For starters, we’ll drive through farmlands and a few cozy little towns to  Seljalandsfoss , one of Iceland’s most well-known waterfalls. If the weather allows, you can walk behind the graceful cascade that drops 60 m (197 ft) and peek through the crystal wall of water. Next up is  Skogafoss Waterfall,   which can be marveled both from below and from the top of the falls, after a climb of about 500 steps.

Carrying on with our journey, we’ll head to  Reynisfjara , a world-famous black sand beach with dramatic  Reynisdrangar   basalt sea stacks — formed by Iceland’s fascinating volcanic activity — rising up from the Atlantic Ocean. We’ll stop for lunch in the town of Vik , soaking in the view of its picturesque church perched high on a hill.

Back on our minibus, we’ll drive through moss-covered lava landscapes to  Kirkjubæjarklaustur , a village wrapped in legends. Our accommodation for the night will be in the area around Skaftafell. If the forecast is favorable, your guide will show where you can see the  Northern Lights  in all their glory. We can’t guarantee you’ll definitely see the Aurora, but hopefully, multicolored swirls of light will ripple across the night sky.

VATNAJÖKULL NATIONAL PARK, JOKULSARLON & DIAMOND BEACH

The following part of the tour is centered on  Vatnajökull National Park , the largest in Europe. After breakfast, we’ll head to  Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon , one of the most surreal sights in the world, let alone Iceland. Floating icebergs dot the enormous lagoon as they slowly make their way toward the open sea. Some blue icebergs run ashore on the famous  Diamond Beach,   where they glitter like diamond jewels on the black volcanic sand.

The highlight of the trip is stepping into the blueish  natural Crystal ice cave during the winter season or swapping to another natural creature - Katla ice cave during the summer season . Led by our expert glacier guide, you’ll be able to safely observe the wondrous ice formations. To satisfy your curiosity, the guide will tell you some intriguing facts about ice cave formation.

Heading back to Reykjavik , we’ll keep a close eye on the Northern Lights and make a short stop if conditions allow for it.

Arrival in Reykjavík is expected around  21:00 (9:00 p.m. ). Fluctuating weather in winter can sometimes influence the schedule a little but don’t worry, our expert travel planners always have a backup plan – it’s all part of the exciting Iceland experience.

It is well worth getting a little damp for such an exciting experience!

Skogafoss Waterfall and Lupines in Spring

Our next highlight is another waterfall,  Skógafoss , located at the foot of a very famous volcano,  Eyjafjallajökull .  On a clear day, you will also get a great view of another volcano mountain glacier, Mýrdalsjokull. As we continue on, we come to  Reynisfjara , a black beach where some fantastic sights, such as the picturesque basalt column formations and the famous  Reynisdrangar  peaks, will greet us. We will drive through the charming small town of  Vík on our way to our accommodation. Throughout the entire day, you can expect to see breathtaking landscapes consisting of vast lava fields, waterfalls, black sands and glacier tongues. Day 2: land of ice.

Icebergs in Icelandic Glacier Lagoon

Today you will really get to know the glacier, venturing into the sparkling, blue/white world of an ice cave with a qualified guide, and visiting the extraordinary glacier lagoon,   Jökulsárlón . Getting up close and personal with a vast glacial tongue of the great   Vatnajökull   glacier does not get any better than this!

The renowned   Jökulsárlón Ice Lagoon , made famous by several blockbuster movies including Batman Begins and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, to name just a couple, is a totally mind-blowing place. Splendid icebergs of amazing shapes, some incredibly large, have calved off the receding Breiðamerkurjökull glacier. They jostle one another in the huge lagoon before gliding on their surreal and stately journeys to the Atlantic ocean. Many of these natural ice sculptures are washed onto the nearby   Diamond Beach , you will see them glittering like diamonds, as they rest on the dramatic coal blackness of the beach.

south coast tour iceland

Next, you go into the glacier with a qualified guide! We'll visit the fascinating Crystal Ice Cave  during the winter season or the Katla Ice Cave  during the summer season. New caves are formed each winter by the melt/freeze cycle of the glacier, they are always changing, both from year to year and within each winter. The journey into an ice cave will give photographers the most amazing opportunity to capture the shimmering blue light that passes through the glacial ice. Surprisingly deep shades of jewel blue will surround you, these tones are caused by ice compression, the way we perceive light and color, and the blueness can sometimes be intensified by algae.

After visiting the ice cave we head towards Reykjavík. We will keep an eye out for the   Northern Lights   on our way back to the city and will make a short stop if conditions allow for it.

We return to Reykjavík around  21:00 pm .

  • Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon

Please Note

This tour is offered year-round, but note that the itinerary may change slightly due to the weather conditions. In the winter, we may have to shorten our time at some stops due to the shorter daylight hours. Also, the Northern Lights are usually only visible during the winter months.

If you’re traveling solo or with an odd number in your group, and you don’t choose the single supplement, you will be paired in a twin room with another participant of the same gender.

Your safety is our priority and sometimes weather or road conditions mean that access to certain ice caves is unavailable and/or unsafe. Our main ice cave in the winter is the Crystal Ice Cave. However, at times when it’s inaccessible, we’ll visit an alternative ice cave. During the summer months (from April to October), we’ll visit the Ice Cave Under the Volcano. If it’s inaccessible, we’ll do a glacier hike instead.

If you do not choose the single supplement you will be paired in a twin room with another participant of the same gender.

Attractions Map

If we arrive in iceland on the same date as we booked our tour, could we miss out on it.

We always recommend booking a multi-day tour starting at least one day after arriving in Iceland. If you’re flying in from the US or will be landing early (4-6:30 am) you should be able to join the tour, but some risks would follow (i.e if the flight gets delayed) and could, therefore, miss out on the tour.

Is it guaranteed that we will see the Northern Lights during the tour?

Most of the hotels we use during our tours are remotely located and therefore ideal for spotting the northern lights. If the forecast is in your favor, then it is more than likely that you will be able to see the magical show put on by the dancing northern lights during your tour with us. Most of the hotels offer a Northern Lights wake-up call-up on request if the lights are spotted.

The Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon; therefore, we can unfortunately never promise they will be seen. Their appearance depends upon atmospheric and weather conditions. The best time to see them is between September and March when it’s dark and clear. The sky needs to be as dark as possible, so the best places to see them are well away from city lights (that’s where we are going!). For more information on the Northern Lights, please look at our blog about Northern Lights .

I'm not sure I have all suitable gear, do you offer any for rent?

If you are not sure that you have suitable gear for your tour, we offer some necessary items for rent. For most of our multi-day tours, we rent out waterproof jackets and pants as well as hiking boots. You can book these items and more under the selection “Extras” in the booking widget when booking your tour on our website.

If you have already booked the tour and wish to add some rental gear to your booking, you can do so at least 24 hours prior to your tour starting by using our customer portal - My Adventures , or contacting our customer care .

What will the average driving per day be?

We drive on average around 300 km (186 miles) per day on our multi-day tours. You will be spending approximately 4-5 hours in the car each day. We do of course stop on multiple locations throughout the tour for sightseeing, activities, bathroom breaks and lunch stops.

Does this tour suit me?

We do welcome participants of all ages older than the listed minimum age for each tour. We have people of ages ranging from 8-99 years joining our multi-day tours.  Our average group usually consists of participants between the age 20-55 years. We do get a lot of solo travellers joining our tours, as well as families and friends.

If you have difficulties participating in any of the activities included in the tour, for example, a glacier activity, you are more than welcome to skip it. You can explore your surroundings in the meantime or wait elsewhere. Our guide should be able to drop you off at a nearby place where there are some services available.

What is my luggage allowance on a multi-day tour?

For multi-day tours, each participant is allowed to bring a small backpack and 1 piece of luggage weighing a maximum of 20 kg (44 lbs). If you have more or heavier luggage with you, you will need to book storage for the surplus luggage before you arrive, there is a small fee for using this facility. Luggage storage in Reykjavík can be added during the booking process of your order in the extras section.

* The combined dimensions of each bag must not exceed 158 cm (62 in).

Which type of meal options are available for me on the tour?

Breakfast is included at all the hotels we stay in during the tour. The breakfast will be a typical breakfast buffet, offering bread, toppings, cereal, yogurt, fruits, coffee, and tea etc.

Your guide will also find a good place for the group to eat lunch. We always try to choose places that have a wide selection of dishes on the menu, so there will be options available for everyone. The dinner is usually at the hotels we stay at for the night.

Are meals included in the tour?

If your tour includes accommodation, breakfast is always included during the tour at the hotel/guesthouse restaurant.

Meals and beverages are otherwise not included on your tour. (Unless it’s specifically stated in the description of the tour)

On our multiday tours, we will be making stops at restaurants and convenience stores where you will be able to purchase all necessities. Cash is not necessary, as credit cards are almost always accepted. Having a small amount of cash doesn’t hurt though.

I'm a solo traveller, is there a single supplement?

A single supplement is available if you want to have your own room, but you are not required to pay a single supplement. If you are a single traveler and do not wish to book a single room, you’ll be roomed with another traveler of the same gender.

What kind of rooms can be expected when booking the multi-day tour with Arctic Adventures?

When booking with Arctic Adventures, you are guaranteed an accommodation at a nice country hotel and/or a guesthouse. The hotels we have partnered up with are all of the same standard and offer nice rooms with made-up beds. The rooms come with private or shared bathrooms, depending on your booking. The standard room is a twin room but it’s possible to request a double room or a triple room, with no extra charge.

If you are traveling solo, you will have to add the single room fee if you wish to have a single room.

All hotels have free Wi-Fi. Towels, a hairdryer and a kettle are accessible at all of the hotels. Hotel breakfast is included!

South Coast Small Group Day Tour

south coast tour iceland

The South Coast tour has become our flagship tour and is by far our most popular experience! Here you are treated to some of the most beautiful places in the southern part of Iceland. The South is home to most of our volcanoes and glaciers, which dominate the landscape and result in a lot of the rivers and waterfalls forming.

This tour has it all: waterfalls, glaciers, volcanoes, the famous black sand beach, a characteristic fishing village and in the summertime we even see puffins!

On this tour, we stop at two waterfalls, Seljalandsfoss  and  Skógafoss,  and then we walk towards the amazing glacier  Sólheimajökull.  We also go to the wonderful  Reynisfjara , the black sand beach home of the puffins and the fishing village of Vík, where we will have a spectacular view of the Reynisdrangar sea stacks. We also take a look at the amazing Eyjafjallajökull something – the volcanic glacier that erupted in 2010 and put the world's flights on hold.

Trophy cabinet:

As mentioned, we are not screwing around with this tour. In 2019, it was chosen as the #5 Day Trip in the world by the TripAdvisor Traveller's Choice awards. We received the 2022 Experience Awards from TripAdvisor, again recognizing the South Coast as one of the best experiences in world tourism. In 2024, it received the Travellers’ Choice Best of the Best Award - a stamp of approval based on 12 months of customer reviews.

Your Day Tours South Coast tour also got a Viator Experience Award in 2024, 2023 and 2022. Viator ranks the world's top experiences , so winning it for two consequent years is sufficient proof that we keep the bar high.

As always, there is free WiFi on board the buses. We'll give you an Icelandic chocolaty treat and listen to some Icelandic music.

Seljalandsfoss

  • Reynisfjara

Vik i Myrdal

Solheimajokull.

The tour starts in Reykjavík, where we will pick you up at your hotel, guesthouse or at one of the bus stops downtown ( See a list of bus stops in Reykjavik ). The pick-up is always between 8:00 and 8:30, but you have to be ready at 8 o'clock. When the pick-up is done we head out of town and the guide introduces him/herself.

Hvolsvollur

The first stop of the day is at a gas station in a town called Hvolsvöllur, it's about 1 hour and 20 minutes from Reykjavík. Here we can go and grab a coffee, breakfast, candy, use the restrooms or simply stand up and stretch our legs. We usually stop here for 15 minutes.

The second stop of the day is one of the most photogenic and visited waterfalls in Iceland,   Skógafoss. The waterfall is extremely beautiful, both in summer and winter. If we are lucky enough and the sun is shining, we will see surprising rainbows.

The drop of the water is about 60 meters (200 ft) high and 25 meters (82 ft) wide. There are a few ways to admire the waterfall, either from the steps on the right side of the waterfall where you have a beautiful view from above, or right in front of it where you can feel all its power.  We usually stop at Skógafoss for 40-50 minutes. The parking lot is just 1 minute's walk from the waterfall. There are restrooms for visitors.

Reynisfjara (the black sand beach)

Reynisfjara is a unique place, as simple as that. It is the most famous black sand beach on the island and one of the most well-known in the world. The landscape is dramatic, with glaciers and volcanoes all around. A few years ago Reynisfjara was chosen on the Top 10 list of non-tropical beaches to visit in the whole world.

Nature is beautiful at the black sand beach and the basaltic columns by the beach are one of a kind. The three cliffs called Reynisdrangar rise up in the ocean with the island Dyrahólaey not far away, making for one of the most stunning panoramas in our country.

Quite a few Hollywood movies were shot here, such as Noah, Star Trek and of course Game of Thrones.

It is really important when you visit the beach to be careful since the waves can be unpredictable and powerful. Your guide will tell you what to keep in mind when visiting the beach.

We also stop for lunch here, there is a small cozy restaurant where you can buy lunch. This stop is about 60-70 minutes.

Vík is a small fishing village on the other side of the mountain where Reynisfjara is. After lunch, we go to the church in the town for a photo stop. The view is spectacular and gives you a real feeling of how the Icelandic fishermen lived back in the day.

This stop is about 10-15 minutes.

We do have many glaciers in Iceland, especially on the south coast of the island. The one we stop at is called Sólheimajökull and is located between two of our most famous volcanoes, Eyjafjallajökull and Katla. The glacier is part of a bigger one called Mýrdalsjökull and is fairly accessible.

The glacier is probably one of the most well-known in Iceland, especially among scientists, since unfortunately, the glacier is melting rapidly due to climate change. We will tell you everything you need to know about the glacier and the area.

It is about 15 minutes walk from the parking lot to the glacier. This stop is about 50-60 minutes.

NOTE: There is no hiking on the glacier included in the tour, only sightseeing!

The last stop of the day is the waterfall Seljalandsfoss, which is one of the most popular waterfalls in Iceland. The reason for it is that in the summertime you can walk behind it and, if you are in the mood for it take amazing selfies there.

Seljalandsfoss is about 60 meters (200 ft) high and you can get really close to it. The water from the river is super fresh and good to drink!

There is a coffee shop here and restrooms as well, which are recommended to use before the drive back to Reykjavík.

Best iceland south coast tours not to miss out on:, glacier hiking tours on south coast.

Knowing that Iceland is often called the country of "fire and ice," it would be a sin to miss an opportunity to explore its "icey" side and the country's beautiful glaciers from up close. During the glacier hiking tour, you'll learn about the glacier, how it's formed, and some other interesting facts.

If you're curious about going on a glacier hiking adventure, but you're afraid that you're not quite ready, don't worry, as there are different kinds of tours suited for all types of travelers. Your first acquaintance with a glacier could be going on a glacier walk on the Sólheimajökull glacier . This 11-kilometer-long glacier tongue is part of a bigger glacier – Myrdalsjokull. What's exciting and important to know about Sólheimajökull is that because of its shape and location, this glacier is highly sensitive to climate change and prone to retreat. Due to global warming, glaciers might disappear in a couple of hundred years. So don't miss out on the opportunity to explore Sólheimajökull and see its blue ice, distinct formations, and crevasses without putting too much effort into preparing for the trip.

south coast tour iceland

Before you hit the glacier, you'll put on the gear and your glacier guide will explain everything you need to know and give safety instructions. As stunning as they are, glaciers can also be dangerous because some of their parts are fragile. So following, listening, and trusting your guide is crucial.

The South Coast of Iceland is also where the largest glacier in Europe, Vatnajökull, is located. All you need to immerse yourself into a true icy adventure is crampons, a helmet, and an ice ax, and you're good to go on the Falljökull glacier cap in Skaftafell Nature Reserve. The glacier tongue is a part of the majestic Vatnajökull glacier, which is surrounded by the stunning nature of Vatnajökull National Park. During the glacier hiking tour, you'll see and admire Icelandic nature and understand the "art" of glaciers and how they're formed. If you want to truly experience the glacier, a glacier hiking and ice climbing tour is the best option.

south coast tour iceland

If you're an avid traveler, you know the feeling of wanting to see and experience as much as possible in a limited time. Iceland's south coast is a perfect place to do so. What if we told you that just in two days, you could see all of its major highlights? Join a two-day Icelandic adventure where one of your first activities will include checking the famous volcanoes such as Hekla, Katla, and Eyjajfjallajökull, as well as the beautiful Skogafoss waterfall , one of the biggest waterfalls in Iceland. Your day will continue with a trip to Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach . This place is famous for its tale about Reynisdrangar cliffs, which are believed to be trolls turned into stones by the morning sun. Your second day will be spent exploring an ice cave in Vatnajökull glacier and visiting Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon as well as Diamond Beach.

Sightseeing tours on South Coast

Sometimes all you need to get to know and connect with the place is to explore its surroundings. And the best way to do so is by getting on a minibus that'll take you through Iceland's south coast . On your way, you'll visit the glorious Solheimajokull glacier, look at the giant basalt cliffs at Reynisfjara black sand beach and find the most beautiful souvenirs for your loved ones at the gift shop in the town of Vik . Your day will finish with two spectacular waterfalls, Skogafoss and Seljalandsfoss. The latter is well-liked because it allows you to walk behind it.

Vik Church and Beach in Iceland

For those who love history and sites still reminiscent of significant times, the tour to the South Coast and DC-3 plane wreck site , taking you through Iceland's Ring Road, should give you a perfect chance to explore the famous sites. During this trip, you'll learn about Icelandic heritage, culture, and history through the country's major sights such as Hekla, Katla, and Eyjafjallajökull volcanoes, Seljalandsfoss waterfall, Reynisfjara black sand beach and, of course, US Navy DC-3 plane. The plane was left in 1973 after it crashed into the shores of a black sand beach.

Ice Caving tours on South Coast

Another fun and must-try activity in South Iceland is ice caving . Once you're familiar with the glacier from the outside, it's time to see what's hiding inside. One of the fun and spectacular ways to explore ice caves is by hopping on a super jeep that will take you to the famous Crystal Ice Cave in Vatnajökull National Park. Your day will start from Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, from which you will reach Vatnajökull ice cave. What's magical about this place is its blue and white "interior" and the fact that the cave changes its appearance with time.

Inside the Crystal Ice Cave Tour

Crystal Ice Cave is one of the most spectacular ice caves in Iceland. Its blue-colored ice leaves every visitor speechless.

In case you want to spice up your experience, one of the fun ways you can reach an ice cave and even see Skeiðarárjökull glacier from the bird's view is by going on a helicopter ride . Later, you'll explore the same glacier from within and admire its vivid colors and shapes.

south coast tour iceland

For those who don't want to wait for winter to be sure to visit an ice cave, a tour to Katla Ice Cave is the place to go. Open all year round and found on the south coast of Iceland, the place you'll actually be visiting is called Kötlujökull – the part of the impressive Mýrdalsjökull glacier. Katla Ice Cave is named after the volcano of the same name situated under the Kötlujökull glacier. What's special about this ice cave is that it was formed naturally, and when entering the cave, you can spot ashes in the ice, reminding you of previous eruptions.

south coast tour iceland

If you're a true ice lover, then spending three days exploring the south coast of Iceland will be a real treat for you. During these few days, you'll get to see the best of the country. First, you'll follow the Golden Circle route . Later on, you'll go to Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon and witness the beauty of Diamond Beach , where the washed-up icebergs from Jökulsárlón end up, serving as the jewels of the beach. And, of course, the trip's cherry on top – Skaftafell Nature Reserve , where you'll hike on Vatnajokull glacier and go inside the famous Katle Ice Cave.

Horseback Riding Tours on South Coast

And if you don't have any prior experience with horses, there's no need to worry, as South Coast & Horse Riding Tour is suitable for people of all ages and physical abilities. During this tour, you'll spend time with these magnificent animals, learn more about them, and discover why they're called horses and never ponies. All you'll need to do is to go along the shores of Reynisfjara's black sand beach , admire Icelandic nature, and feel its fresh air.

south coast tour iceland

Iceland's south coast offers a lot of great experiences and attractions, so the only question remains – how to see and experience the most of it. What if we told you you could free two birds with one key by going on a Glacier Walk & Horseback Riding tour ? This way, you'll get to explore the pride of South Iceland – Sólheimajökull Glacier, see its impressive colors, and hear interesting stories from your guide about this attraction. Next on your agenda is the horseriding session in Iceland's southernmost village Vik. This is where you'll go through Víkurfjara Black Sand Beach and see Reynisdrangar Basalt Sea Stacks. What could be a better way to explore South Iceland?

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon tours on South Coast

For those who enjoy water activities, the best way to get to know the south coast of Iceland is by trying out a kayak and glacier hike tour in Jökulsárlón . Here, you'll have the opportunity to spend the whole day surrounded by incredible nature. This tour is suited for those who already know how to paddle and those who are just starting, as the guide will teach you all you need to know before starting to kayak. Once ready, you'll make your way through "diamond water" – the icebergs from Breiðamerkurjökull Glacier drift slowly in the water, reminding you of beautiful sparkling gems. Better than kayaking in the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon can only be glacier hiking at Falljökull Glacier. Here you'll reach its peak in just 30 minutes and be able to admire the breathtaking views that'll surround you. You'll see Vatnajökull and Iceland's tallest peak – Hvannadalshnúkur.

Northern Lights tours in South Coast

Northern Lights is one of the many special things Iceland is known for, so if you can see one, we'll tell you how not to miss that opportunity. What's amazing about the south coast of Iceland is that it can offer you a lot to do in just one day. In just approximately 16 hours, you can hike your way onto the glacier, visit the black sand beach, see a couple of waterfalls, and spend the night chasing the Northern Lights .

south coast tour iceland

You'll get the best of both worlds with a four-day tour to South Coast and Snaefellsnes peninsula . Spend four days with Icelandic highlights, waterfalls, lava fields, mountains, and even a diamond beach. But what makes this journey majestic is the hunt of the Northern Lights. Why hunt? Because a lot depends on the weather forecast, that sometimes might not be suitable for the auroras to be seen.

Of course, the longer you stay on the south coast, the higher the chances that you'll get to witness them, and perhaps even more than one time. And if you're curious to see "the other side" of Iceland, especially the south coast, then you should try out an award-winning five-day tour along the south coast that includes the aurora borealis chase. What's special about this tour is that you'll explore the Golden Circle, Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, as well as Vatnajökull Glacier and Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Every day you'll get up ready for a new adventure and finish your evening with the sight of the magical green lights.

Why do so many people choose our South Coast tours?

If you want to see some of Iceland’s greatest treasures in just one day, our South Coast tour is the perfect choice! That’s because it’s easily reached from Reykjavík and offers a variety of spectacular sights, all packed into one region.

On our South Coast tours, you’ll explore a beautiful coastal plain fringed with volcanoes and waterfalls on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other . Fill your Instagram with the South Coast’s superstar sights, including two towering waterfalls (Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss).

Thrill at the sight of glaciers like Sólheimajökull, one of the most accessible glaciers in the country, and enjoy an unforgettable stroll on its most iconic black sand beach at Reynisfjara.

There are more than ten thousand waterfalls in Iceland , fueled by crystal-clear meltwater from the dozens of glaciers that cover mountains and volcanoes inland. You’ll see countless more cascades tumbling off the sides of Eyjafjallajökull as we explore the area on our South Coast tours.

And you’ll see a “secret waterfall” called Gljúfrabúi, hidden in a gorgeous rock canyon , and even more cascades when we visit Fjáðrárgljufur if you select our multi-day tour to Jökulsárlón.

More than 10% of Iceland is covered by glaciers, and there are 269 “named” glaciers in the country. These vast rivers of frozen ice have covered Iceland’s mountains and volcanoes for centuries, advancing and receding as the climate changes. Sólheimajökull (Sun’s Home Glacier) is one of the most accessible glaciers in Iceland, part of the mighty Mýrdalsjökull ice cap and the Katla Global Geopark. You’ll have the chance to take an unforgettable hike across its frozen maze of fascinating ice formations, crevasses, and ridges!

Fjaðrárgljúfur (the Feather River Canyon) is one of the most beautiful canyons in Iceland and one of the most accessible too!

It’s a surreal sight – a magnificent winding canyon carved out by a mighty glacial flood that rushed down the River Fjaðrá nine thousand years ago.

Another stunning river canyon can be seen at Gullfoss, where a thrilling two-tier waterfall thunders into a deep ravine. It’s part of the famous Golden Circle route and one of the highlights of the South Coast. You’ll find more details about this iconic attraction here .

National Geographic and TripAdvisor have named Reynisfjara one of the world’s finest beaches .

You’ll soon see why when you see this iconic black sand beach! Stretching as far as the eye can see, Reynisfjara’s jet-black sands lie between pounding Atlantic waves on one side and beautiful basalt columns hugging the cliffs on the other.

And the brooding sea stacks of the Reynisdrangar loom just offshore , looking like something from a film set! Enjoy the mesmerizing views of Dyrhólaey from here, and check out a different perspective when we visit Vík, with its black sand dunes.

On our Ring Road and South Coast tours , you’ll see how lava has shaped the country into what it is today, where more than 30 active volcano systems have created astonishing sights like Stuðlagil Canyon , the Eldhraun lava field, and the black sand beach at Reynisfjara .

See the “Arch with a Hole” summer home to Puffins

Offering some of the best views on the South Coast, Dyrhólaey (Door Hill Island) is a spectacular promontory rising more than a hundred meters high above the Atlantic. Close to the most southerly point in Iceland, fierce waves pound the shores below. You’ll enjoy phenomenal panoramic views of towering stone arches, gleaming glaciers, brooding volcanoes, and Iceland’s famous black sand beach, Reynisfjara . If you look closely, you’ll see the Reynisdrangar too!  In the summer, thousands of puffins and other seabirds flock here, so it’s an excellent spot for bird watching!

Blue Lagoon

Take a dip at Iceland’s famous Geothermal SPA

Experience a spa day like no other with a trip to Iceland’s iconic Blue Lagoon . This geothermal paradise guarantees relaxation and rejuvenation after a day of exploring. Whale Watching

Enjoy an unforgettable whale watching tour in Iceland!

With more than twenty types of whales visiting Iceland every year, it’s one of the best places in the world to take a whale watching tour. When we visit Akureyri in North Iceland on our Ring Road tours , get ready to spot humpbacks, minke whales, orcas, dolphins, and porpoise s . If you’re lucky, you might see a Blue whale, the most enormous creature ever known! Whales and other cetaceans come to Iceland to feed in the nutrient-rich waters, and some stay all year round now. Imagine the joy of seeing whales and dolphins in the wild – you can do that when you visit Iceland!

Explore the land of ten thousand waterfalls on our tours!

Iceland is covered by glaciers and snow-capped mountains, so that means there’s a lot of crystal-clear meltwater tumbling over cliffs and rushing to the sea. Some say there are over 10,000 waterfalls in Iceland, and you’ll see some of the most famous falls on our Golden Circle , South Coast , and Ring Road tours . There are hidden waterfalls, multi-tiered falls, widescreen cascades where rainbows dance on sunny days, and even waterfalls where you can walk behind the waters! We’ll show you some of the best fosses in Iceland – and they’re all easy to reach too!

Volcanic Craters

See Iceland’s spectacular volcanic craters on our tours!

Iceland is less than 20 million years old, created by underwater volcanoes rising up along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge with a pipeline of molten magma straight from the Earth’s burning core. Dozens of volcanoes dot the country, and many are still active, which means you can explore fascinating volcanic formations at different geological stages! On our Golden Circle tours, you’ll see the multicolored crater at Kerið. Grábrok Craters are included in itineraries for our Westfjords Tours . There are countless more craters to be seen on our Ring Road and Silver Circle tours!

Seal Watching

Go seal spotting while you’re on tour in Iceland!

Iceland is a haven for several seal species, with little colonies of these captivating creatures dotted around the country. On our South Coast & Glacier Lagoon and Ring Road tours , you’ll have a chance to spot them at Jökulsárlón, where seals are often seen basking on the floating icebergs. Iceland’s coastline features golden sandy beaches where Harbor and Gray seals make their home, including Ytri-Tunga , a stop on our  Snaefellsnes tour in West Iceland.

Notably the highest chances to see them is when taking one of Westfjords Tours . It’s your best chance to see these gorgeous creatures in their natural habitat!

River Rafting

Take a ride on a thrilling river rafting tour experience!

Iceland’s fast-flowing glacial rivers offer you a fantastic adventure experience when you join one of our adrenaline-pumping river rafting tours. It’s one of the most exciting adventure activities you can take in Iceland!

Clear, dark skies are needed to see the Northern Lights at their best, far away from streetlights. So when you book a winter multi-day tour , you’ll have the best chance to see the Northern Lights when you stay overnight in the remote Icelandic countryside. The darker the nights get, the brighter the lights can be seen. Choose one of our winter tours for an experience you’ll never forget!

Explore Iceland’s unique ice caves on our exciting tours!

More than a tenth of Iceland is covered by glaciers, making it the perfect place to get a close look at these astonishing frozen wonders. On our South Coast tours , you can opt for an unforgettable Ice Cave experience at Vatnajökull . Iceland’s glaciers are constantly changing, so your ice cave trip will be unique – nobody else will see the same sight again! Strap on some crampons and discover fascinating ice formations, including stalagmites, stalactites, and spectacular blue ice caves, safe in the hands of our experienced glacier guides. Tours operate between late October to April.

Lava Caving

Iceland is a hotbed of volcanic activity formed by superheated lava and molten rock from countless eruptions over millions of years. When the lava stops flowing, the top crust cools more quickly, leaving hollow caves and tunnels behind. You can explore these incredible underground spaces when our Silver Circle tours visit The Cave at Víðgelmir in West Iceland. Enjoy a 90-minute expedition on well-lit walkways with expert guides and learn about stalagmites and stalactites in colorful caverns. Viking outlaws used these places as hideouts – now you can explore here too!

Golden Circle

See Iceland’s most famous sights

Tour the Golden Circle to see the glittering jewels in Iceland’s crown. In one convenient day trip from the capital, you’ll see the magnificent Gullfoss waterfall, the geothermal wonders of Geysir , and the spectacular rift valley at Þingvellir National Park . The Golden Circle offers you the best of Iceland’s natural beauty and history, where you can walk in Viking footsteps between two continents! Stand back as a geyser erupts at Haukadalur Geothermal Area every few minutes and admire the view at Gullfoss, a tremendous two-tiered waterfall fed by glacial meltwater.

Hot Spring Bathing

Take a dip in Iceland’s famous geothermal spas on our tours

Enjoying a dip in a geothermal hot spring spa or pool is a daily ritual for Icelanders, like going to a coffee shop or a bar. There are dozens of natural hot spring spas, swimming pools, and outdoor hot pots all over the country, waiting for you to jump in and relax! Our Golden Circle tours include options to visit the Blue Lagoon or Sky Lagoon near Reykjavík, while our Silver Circle tours include an authentic stone-walled hot pot in a remote canyon! Our Ring Road tours also feature several geothermal swimming pools around the country, where the locals love to relax too.

Take our tours of Iceland to admire its gorgeous glaciers

Close to the Arctic Circle and just 300 miles wide, Iceland is the perfect place to explore glaciers and ice caps. These frozen blue wonders can be seen easily as you explore Iceland on our Ring Road tours . That’s because outlet glaciers and glacier tongues reach down from  Sólheimajökull on the South Coast and from Vatnajökull in the East right down to the coast, making it easy to get up close to these majestic sights. Centuries of snow and ice have created these incredible glaciers, but they are retreating now due to climate change. Don’t miss your chance to see these marvels while you can!

Glacier Hike

Experience an adventure like no other on a Glacier Hike tour

Did you know that a tenth of Iceland is covered in glaciers and that 269 of them have been named? Iceland is the ideal place to come if you want to explore these natural wonders at close quarters. That’s because our South Coast tours visit Sólheimajökull in South Iceland, where you can strap on crampons and take an unforgettable stroll across this ever-changing environment. Gaze at incredible ice formations, crossing crevasses, and exploring ice caves, all in the hands of knowledgeable expert guides. Note : Our Glacier Hike tours operate between April and October.

Iceland is a country filled with incredible water features, including hot springs, waterfalls, and glacial rivers. But did you know that the word “geyser” comes from here? On our Golden Circle tours , you’ll see the “OG” of geysers everywhere at the Haukadalur Geothermal area. While Geysir has fallen silent recently, nearby Strokkur erupts in steam explosions and spray every few minutes, sending superheated water flying high into the sky. Geysir means “gush” in Icelandic, and that’s where the name comes from! If you book a package with stay in Hveragerði you can also admire smaller cousin of Strokkur that erupts every 15-20 minutes.

Geothermal Areas

Discover Iceland’s active geothermal areas on our tours

Iceland’s fiery volcanic origins mean it’s a hothouse of geothermal activity with several colorful geothermal areas you can explore on our tours. The Blue Lagoon is the most famous, close to the airport, and you can visit the Haukadalur Geothermal Area on our Golden Circle tours . On our Silver Circle tours , you can see the most powerful hot spring in Europe at Deildartunguhver . And if you choose one of our Ring Road tours , you’ll see the almost alien landscapes at Hverir , where fumaroles fizz and hot pools bubble and boil! Feel the ground tremble and smell the sulfur!

Iceland is a “country in the making” formed by volcanoes and earthquakes and sculpted by gigantic glaciers.

That offers you a variety of breathtaking and unique landscapes, such as Stuðlagil and Fjaðrárgljúfur , two of the most stunning places in Iceland! At Stuðlagil, you’ll see twisting basalt columns line a gorgeous glacial river canyon, a magnificent location that has only recently been discovered. Fjaðrárgljúfur (Feather River Canyon) is a surreal sight – a marvelous sheer-walled river canyon covered in blankets of velvet-green moss.

Our tours will take you straight to the most spectacular sights in Iceland, but there are ways of getting even closer if you want to! At the Glacier Lagoon (Jökulsárlón), you can jump into an amphibious vehicle for an unforgettable tour around the lagoon, sailing amongst the glittering giants.

Imagine the thrill of seeing these gigantic chunks of multi-coloured ice from just a few feet away! Where else will you get a chance to cruise between towering icebergs as they sway around the spectacular lagoon? Don’t miss this magical experience! Note: Boat tours are available from May to October.

Bird Watching

Everyone wants to see Iceland’s famous puffins when they visit in the summer months (late May until mid-August) . Iceland is also home to countless more species of birds, some of which stay all year round.

On our South Coast and Ring Road tours, you’ll also have a chance to see Arctic terns, kittiwakes, guillemots, and razorbills. Lake Mývatn in North Iceland attracts thousands of ducks each summer, making it a bird watcher’s paradise! Look out for the Barrow’s Goldeneye, Harlequin ducks, gyrfalcons, gannets, and ptarmigans! Our Westfjords and Snæfellsnes tours also include visits to bird-filled cliffs along the route.

Visit the “original” Geyser on our Golden Circle tours

Iceland’s fierce volcanic activity fuels gushing geysers all around the country, and the most famous hot spring is Geysir , one of the highlights of our Golden Circle tours . Geysir was the first erupting hot spring discovered by Europeans, and its name is the Icelandic word for “gush”, giving its name to all hot springs worldwide. Geysir is quiet these days, but Strokkur sends hot water and vapor high into the sky every few minutes! You won’t have to wait long to see it blow sky-high. So get your camera ready – this will be one of the best photo opportunities you’ll have in Iceland!

Gullfoss Waterfall

Discover the glorious Gullfoss on our Golden Circle tours

One of the highlights of the famous Golden Circle route , Gullfoss is a thundering two-tier waterfall fueled by Langjökull , the “Long Glacier”, which you’ll see far inland if it’s a clear day. Tumbling more than thirty meters into a dramatic rock canyon, Gullfoss is one of the most thrilling waterfalls in the country, and you can see the falls from several viewing platforms. Watch out for rainbows on sunny days, and wear waterproofs – millions of gallons of water crashing over the cascade creates lots of spray!

Traditional Architecture

See the famous turf-roofed buildings!

Traditional Icelandic architecture is characterized by its simplicity, functionality, and integration with the natural environment. During our tours you will be able to see couple of its examples.

Enjoy an evening and overnight stay in the capital of the North

Akureyri is the unofficial “second city” of Iceland, located in the far north about six hours from Reykjavik, nestling at the end of the longest fjord in the country.

Sólheimajökull Glacier & Lagoon

See the slowly disappearing glacier and a glacial lake forming in front!

Sólheimajökull is a magnificent glacier located on the South Coast of Iceland. It is an outlet glacier that descends from the larger Mýrdalsjökull ice cap. Sólheimajökull is famous for its breathtaking ice formations, including deep crevasses, ice caves, and dramatic ice ridges.

The glacial environment of Sólheimajökull provides a unique opportunity to witness the effects of climate change, as the glacier has been receding in recent years. This caused new Glacial Lagoon to appear on the map of Iceland, where huge chunks of ice slowly float on its surface.

Húsafell Canyon Baths

Bathe like Icelanders did in the old days!

This place offers a unique and natural relaxation experience, nestled within a stunning canyon surrounded by lush greenery. This is a spellbinding place that has to be seen to be believed, with three geothermally-heated pools of varying temperatures (30-41°C or 86-105°F), a cold-water pot and a cooling waterfall, all designed to blend seamlessly into the natural environment.

These are traditional and authentic Icelandic bathing pools , inspired by the age-old ways used by the locals in this area for a thousand years. Sustainably built in the traditional stone-bath style in an off-grid location, it’s a unique combination.

Rauðisandur Red Beach

Find yourself on the Westernmost Beach in Europe!

Rauðisandur is a stunning golden sandy beach located in the Westfjords region of Iceland. Its name translates to “Red Sand,” but the beach is actually a unique blend of golden, beige, and reddish hues . The vast expanse of Rauðisandur stretches for nearly 10 kilometers and is backed by stunning cliffs and mountains. The beach is known for its tranquil beauty and peaceful atmosphere, making it a perfect spot for solitude and relaxation.

Bolafjall Sky Walk

Take a walk on top of one of the most beautiful summits in Iceland!

Bolafjall is a prominent mountain located in the Westfjords region of Iceland. Rising up to an elevation of 638 meters , it offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding fjords and coastal landscape.

In the recent year, on the summit of Bolafjall impressing viewing platform with sky walk was constructed, just right next to old American radar station. It allows you to witness the beauty of the rugged terrain and the vast ocean beyond. The road leading to the top is very steep and narrow, but no worries! You will be taken there by our experienced drivers.

See the most powerful waterfall in the whole of Europe!

Dettifoss is a mighty and powerful waterfall located in Northeast Iceland. It is known for being the most powerful waterfall in Europe , with a massive volume of water cascading over its rocky edge.

The sheer force and thundering sound of Dettifoss are awe-inspiring, creating a mesmerizing spectacle for visitors. The waterfall is situated in the Vatnajökull National Park, surrounded by rugged landscapes and dramatic cliffs.

Discover the hidden gem of the South Coast with us!

Gljúfrabúi is a hidden gem located in Iceland, near the popular tourist attraction, Seljalandsfoss waterfall.

It is often referred to as the “Secret Waterfall” or “Cave Watefall” due to its concealed location and the fact, that is very often missed by many !

Diamond Beach

Take a walk among the “Diamonds”!

The beach gets its name from the sparkling icebergs that wash up on the black sand , resembling diamonds on the shore. The contrast between the glistening ice and the dark volcanic sand creates a breathtaking sight. Diamond Beach is a photographer’s paradise, offering stunning opportunities to capture the beauty of nature.

Walk on a lava arch and see many stunning sights!

Arnastapi is a small village located on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula in Iceland. The village offers a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere, making it a popular destination for nature lovers and hikers. One of the main attractions in Arnarstapi is the famous Gatklettur, a natural arch rock formation that stands tall against the crashing waves of the Atlantic Ocean. There, you can also take a walk on the Lava Bridge and pose for a unique picture.

Enjoy an evening and overnight stay in the capital of the West

Borgarnes bubbles with life, packed into a picturesque promontory overlooking the broad waters of Borgarfjörður, the “City Fjord”.

Enjoy an afternoon and overnight stay in the charming, geothermal village

Hveragerði catches your attention with steam vents billowing vapor into the air everywhere you look. You’ll be amazed by the endless rows of geothermally-heated greenhouses, where bananas and other fruits are grown all year round!

Hraunfossar Lava Waterfalls

See a unique waterfall when you book a Silver Circle tour

Iceland is filled with unique sights, and one of the most mesmerizing is the “Lava Waterfalls” at Hraunfossar . Part of the Silver Circle tour route, glacial meltwater gently cascades down a series of steps from the middle of moss-covered lava cliffs, with the falls stretching for hundreds of meters. The waters seep through the Hallmundarhraun lava field until reaching the White River before tumbling gracefully below. You can enjoy the Lava Waterfall from different perspectives at several viewing platforms. It’s an extraordinary sight!

Explore Iceland’s wildest region

If you want to see Iceland at its wildest, the Westfjords await you! Lonely Planet picked the Westfjords as its No.1 place to go – here’s your chance to see it!

Vik í Myrdal

Charming, southernmost village in Iceland

The picturesque village of Vik í Myrdal is perfect for a photo stop on our South Coast and Ring Road tours. Atlantic waves roll in with full force at the most southerly point on Iceland’s mainland, pounding the black sand beaches. Vík is the warmest coastal town in the country, and the summer air is filled with migrating birds. Walk its pretty streets and admire the gorgeous hilltop church atop the town’s highest point! Enjoy another view of the Reynisdrangar from there!

Þingvellir National Park

Where two continents split apart

A place of outstanding natural beauty, Þingvellir National Park offers you a unique opportunity to walk in Viking footsteps between two continents. The tectonic plates of North America and Europe are pulling apart along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge here, increasing Iceland’s size every day! The early Viking settlers held their parliaments (the Alþingi) here for a thousand years, and Iceland declared its independence from this stunning location in 1944, so this is a sacred place for all Icelanders! It’s now a UNESCO World Heritage Site , making it a must-see stop on our Golden Circle tours .

South Coast

See the best of Iceland’s stunning South Coast

Explore the treasures of the South Coast on our tours, discovering stunning landscapes lined with thundering waterfalls, immense glaciers, towering volcanoes, and dramatic black sand beaches! Easily reached from the city, the South Coast is an unforgettable dreamland of astonishing natural wonders. Hike across a glacier at Sólheimajökull , or maybe discover a hidden waterfall? Walk on an endless black sand beach at Reynisfjara or enjoy a thrilling walk behind a waterfall at Seljalandsfoss ? These are just some of the magical experiences you can enjoy on a tour of the sensational South Coast!

Snæfellsnes

See the “Iceland in Miniature”

Close to the capital and easily reached, the Snæfellsnes Peninsula is an ideal tour to discover all of Iceland’s best features in just one day! The “Snow Mountain Peninsula” is often called “ Iceland in Miniature ” because you can find photogenic mountains (including Kirkjufell ), beautiful beaches, plunging waterfalls, seal colonies, ancient lava fields, and a towering stratovolcano in one place! Some say the peninsula has mystical qualities as one of the planet’s many “chakra” centers. It also inspired Jules Verne when he wrote “ Journey to the Center of the Earth ”!

Soothe yourself after a day on tour with a dip at Sky Lagoon

One of Iceland’s newest and most impressive geothermal spa experiences, Sky Lagoon offers you a memorable experience with astonishing views of the Atlantic. Relax in the perfectly regulated waters surrounded by volcanic rocks and a turf-roofed visitor center. Enjoy the 75-meter infinity pool, and order a drink at the swim-up bar! You can opt for an authentic Icelandic bathing experience with the Seven-Step Ritual , including saunas, cold mist showers, and exfoliating scrubs. It’s one of the most spectacular geothermal spa experiences in the world!

Seljalandsfoss

Take a walk behind a waterfall on our South Coast tours

Seljalandsfoss is a graceful waterfall that tumbles over 60 meters from Eyjafjallajökull , a volcano on Iceland’s stunning South Coast . It has a special feature that makes it even more exciting – there’s a path you can take all the way around the cascade! It can be slippery, but the views are unforgettable if you don’t mind getting wet! The chute is fueled by glacial meltwater from the volcano that stopped air traffic in 2010, putting Iceland on the map! A “secret” waterfall called Gljúfrabúi is nearby, hidden in a little green rock canyon – we’ll show you where to find it!

Reynisfjara Black Beach

See one of the most famous beaches in the world

If National Geographic and TripAdvisor both say Reynisfjara is one of the best beaches in the world, then you have to add it to your list of “must-see” places to visit when you’re in Iceland. With miles of jet-black volcanic sands stretching into the distance and fierce Atlantic waves pounding the shoreline, it’s one of the most dramatic coastlines you’ll ever see! Lined with beautiful basalt columns, the Reynisdrangar completes the cinematic scene, towering sea stacks looming offshore! Some say these were trolls trying to catch a ship, frozen in time when the sun rose!

Jökulsárlon Glacier Lagoon

Explore Iceland’s spectacular Glacier Lagoon on our tours

Where else can you get up close to immense icebergs in a glacial meltwater lagoon? On our South Coast Multi-Day and Ring Road tours , you can visit the astonishing Glacier Lagoon at Jökulsárlón , where you’ll see gigantic icebergs floating serenely around a spectacular lake, which only formed about 80 years ago. As the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier retreats, giant pieces break off the edge and sail out to sea. The Glacier Lagoon is the “waiting room” on the journey! Come and see these multicolored icy marvels for yourself at this bucket-list location, and look out for seals basking on the bergs too!

Seljalandsfoss Waterfall

Walk into the cave hidden behind the falls!

Hveragerði has several fine restaurants and cafés, and some offer unique dishes that use the underground heat! For example, Ölverk Pizza & Brewery specialize in wood-fired pizzas while using geothermal heat to brew their high-quality craft ales. You can also have a snack inside the greenhouse at Rósa Kaffi . Nearby, The Greenhouse Hotel is also home to a food hall with several options, including tacos, burgers, fried chicken and Asian cuisine. More options are available here, so you’re guaranteed a great meal, whatever you’re in the mood for.

After Sólheimajökull we got about 2 hours and 15 minutes drive back to Reykjavik with a facility stop if needed on the way back.

On Iceland’s south coast are five beautiful and remarkable destinations that you will visit during this tour. Along the way from Reykjavik to Vik, you will also enjoy stunning views of the Icelandic countryside and the sweeping Skeiðarásandur black-sand-plains of the Vatnajökull National Park.

The south coast is also a very active volcano area where many of our latest eruptions have happened, such as the world famous Eyjafjallajökull which erupted in 2010.

Seljalandsfoss

Seljalandsfoss is one of the best known waterfalls in Iceland. It is a small but beautiful waterfall that cascades down the front of a cliff – and that makes it possible to walk behind the waterfall to view the scenic countryside of Iceland through the water.

The waterfall drops 60 m (197 ft) and is part of the Seljalands River that has its origins in the volcano glacier Eyjafjallajökull.

south coast tour iceland

The Skógafoss waterfall is situated on the Skógá River in the south of Iceland at the cliffs of the former coastline. It is one of Iceland’s most beautiful waterfalls, with a width of 25 meters and a drop of 60 meters.

The water from Skógafoss plummets over the edge of the cliff and falls into a deep pool at its base, creating a huge plume of spray. On a sunny day it is common to the waterfall bathed in a vivid rainbow.

In Iceland there are many myths and legends, and one of these involves Skógafoss. It is believed that many years ago, a settler named Þrasi buried his treasure chest full of gold under the waterfall. Maybe you will be the lucky one to find Þrasi’s treasure chest on this tour!

Sólheimajökull Glacier

The Sólheimajökull glacier is the southwestern glacier tongue or outlet glacier of the Mýrdalsjökull ice-cap. It is about 8km long and 2km wide and is the 4th largest glacier in Iceland.

It is a magnificent glacier that has many cracks and crevasses, and ash layers caused by the regular volcano eruptions in the area. There is a small and beautiful lagoon in front of the glacier.

Sadly, like most Icelandic glaciers, Sólheimajökull is rapidly receding. The glacier has retreated about a kilometer over the last decade and it is possible that it may disappear totally within the next few decades.

The river Jökulsá runs from Sólheimajökull filled with glacial meltwater, which is rich with smelly sulphuric acid from the subglacial areas. For this reason, the river is sometimes called the “stinky river”.

Reynisfjara

Reynisfjara is a magnificent black pebble beach which features an amazing cliff of regular basalt columns resembling a rocky step pyramid, which is called Gardar.

Just offshore are the stunning basalt sea stacks called Reynisdrangar. According to folklore, two trolls attempted to drag a ship to land but were turned to stone as daylight broke, turning them into the Reynisdrangar stacks.

Just to the west of Reynisfjara, the large rock arch of the Dyrhólaey peninsula is visible.

The area has a rich birdlife, including puffins, fulmars and guillemots.

The waves at Reynisfjara are especially strong and unpredictable, and fatal accidents have occurred at this beach, so people are advised to take extra care when visiting the area.

The village of Vík is the southernmost village in Iceland, around 180km southeast of Reykjavík.

Despite having only around 300 inhabitants, Vik is the largest settlement for more than 50kms in each direction and is therefore an important service center for the inhabitants of, and visitors to, the coastal strip between Skógar and the west edge of the Mýrdalssandur glacial outwash plain.

The most iconic landmark in Vik (or at least the most photographed!) is the red-roofed wooden Reyniskirkja church which was built in 1929. Because of its beautiful location, the church is very popular for weddings. Also, because of its high position just out of town and Vik’s close proximity to Katla volcano, the church is the evacuation spot in case of a volcano eruption and the subsequent flood of glacial meltwater.

The South Coast Tour duration is about 9 to 10 hours, including stops at the 5 main sites and even one or two extra stops depending on time available.

With Iceland Everywhere Tours, you are led by an experienced guide who gives you information about each destination. While driving between destinations you will be told about what you see through the window and you will get an insight into our local history, culture and nation.

Iceland Everywhere Tours travels with small groups in comfortable minibuses and our guides work hard to ensure that you receive personal service and an excellent experience.

Some of the destinations on the South Coast Tour are slightly difficult to access (for example, the walk from the parking lot to the base of Sólheimajökull glacier takes around 20 minutes) so this tour might not be suitable for everyone.  If you are in doubt, please contact us and we can discuss your needs and make sure you are able to enjoy as much of the experience as possible.

South Coast Tour - Excellent

We did the South Coast Tour and it was probably the highlight of our time in Iceland. The bus was only half full for the trip which meant we had plenty of space on the bus. We were taken to a couple of extra stops which weren’t on the itinerary which was a nice bonus. I think it was very good value for money. The guide was excellent and had good commentary. The best bits of the tour were probably Skogafoss waterfall or the black sand beach, both were amazing. I enjoyed the whole tour and everything we stopped to look at. Can’t recommend this tour enough. It’s a must do when visiting Iceland. We did a tour with another company the next day and by comparison Iceland Everywhere were much better.

Iceland South Coast tour

south coast tour iceland

The Iceland South Coast Tour is a great tour to explore the many attractions in South Iceland, the waterfalls, the glaciers and the Black Sand Beaches. This is the perfect tour for any nature explorer.

This tour takes you along the south coast of Iceland, beside the dramatic landscape of Eyjafjoll mountains. It was here that the famous Eyjafjallajokull volcano erupted in 2010, spreading dramatic clouds of ash . The south coast day tour is an indispensable part of your Iceland itinerary it features beautiful waterfalls, black beaches, extraordinary vistas, majestic glaciers and – a glimpse of a volcano.

The South Coast is among the most popular attractions in Iceland and in the summer time you will find hundreds of tourist at the most popular places. However, the South Coast area is just as beautiful and breathtaking in other times of the year, even more so when you have snow and a chance to see the Northern Lights.

The South Coast is characterized by the Eyjafjoll mountains and the Myrdalsjokull glacier, where the massive volcano Katla rests. There are many beautiful waterfalls along the route and you also get chance to visit a true black sand beach. There are many natural attractions along the way and we can guarantee that you will be blown away by the sheer beauty of the area. This is a tour that we highly recommend and with a local expert driver guide, this will be a tour that you’ll never forget.

What to expect on the Iceland South Coast Tour?

The day begins with early morning pickup in Reykjavik. We head East out of the City passing Hveragerdi and Selfoss. First stop is Urridafoss waterfall he might not be tall but he is very powerful, water flow of 360 m 3 per second. This stop is perfect to stretch our legs before we continue to our way south.

Trying our best to avoid the traffic, we drive past Seljalandsfoss waterfall and go straight to Dyrholaey 120 meter high Promontory. Here you will be afforded an extraordinary view in all directions: Myrdalsjokull glacier to the north; the lava sea stacks Reynisdrangar to the east; the never-ending black sand beach to the west; and to the south. In late July and August, the young Puffins can easily be seen when they come out of their nesting holes in hundreds and practice flying for the first time. The highlight of Dyrholaey is the massive Arch that the promontory gets its name from.

Next up is the famous Reynisfjara black sand beach with its famous basalt stacks and cave. Here you can see the stunning rock formations and the large rocky sea stacks visible from long distance. Reynisfjara is known for its sneaker waves and all people must be aware of the danger from the waves. After lunch we drive to the former fishing village Vik. We can se the less popular (read less People) side of the beach and if you want, a souvenir shop where you can buy gifts or something nice for yourself.

The way back to Reykjavik

First stop on the way back is Solheimajokull Glacier. A rugged glacial tongue.with spectacular ice formations. We walk all the way up to the Glacier so we can touch the Ice and take some pictures. Next stop is the 60 meter high Skogafoss waterfall. Here you can walk all the way to the waterfall and feel his overwhelming power. Make sure to bring waterproof clothes and protect your camera. If the Sun is shining there is a constant rainbow which changes the closer you get to the waterfall. If we are on good time after exploring Skogafoss waterfall we can add one more “secret stop” to the day.

We have not finished todays sights and on our way to the famous Seljalandsfoss waterfall we take a quick stop to look at the volcano with the unpronounceable name Eyjafjallajokull, which made a mess of European air traffic in 2010. Seljalandsfoss waterfall is the one you can walk behind when it´s not Ice on the path.

Next to Seljalandsfoss is the so called Secret waterfall or “Gljúfrabúi” as Icelanders call it. Here you walk into a gorge to see the hidden 40. meter tall waterfall. There is a lot of spray from the waterfall so make sure you have a waterproof coat and good shoes for this one. We do this as the last stop of the day because you will most likely get wet, don’t worry to much about that though you will dry on the drive back to Reykjavik and the waterfall is well worth it.

Join us on this small group south coast day tour we will guide you through all these wonderful places and give you the time you need in each place.

Possible to add on the tour Horseback riding on black sand beach Glacier hike on Solheimajokull glacier Snowmobiling on a glacier 1-hour ATW tour Ice caving in the secret Ice cave (only in winter)
