eTA Canada for Singaporean Citizens

If you hold a Singapore passport, you are eligible for the Canada Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) — a convenient online visa waiver .

There is no need to go to the High Commission of Canada in Singapore, as with a visa application.

Instead, all you need is any desktop, laptop, tablet, smartphone, or other device with an internet connection to apply for your Canada eTA from Singapore there and then.

Do I need a visa to enter Canada from Singapore?

Singapore is exempt from the usual visa requirements imposed by Canada, which means Singaporean citizens do not need a visa to visit Canada.

To enter Canada visa-free by air , you will need to get an eTA visa waiver online.

The Canada eTA for Singaporeans allows visa-free travel to Canada for 5 years (or until the registered passport expires, if this happens sooner than 5 years).

Do Singaporeans need a Canada eTA for transit?

Yes , passengers from Singapore who stop in Canada in transit between flights must have a valid eTA .

This is the case regardless of whether they plan to leave the airport or not.

When transiting through Canada, most foreign nationals need a visa to enter and leave the country.

This is not necessary for Singaporeans in possession of the eTA, which covers transit visits provided the points of entry and departure are via air and not land or sea.

Canada eTA requirements from Singapore

Singaporeans must meet a few simple requirements to get the Canadian eTA .

The eTA is transmitted and recorded electronically, so all Singaporeans travellers need to have an electronic passport that is machine-readable . Singaporean passports issued in recent years are all machine-readable, but passengers who are worried about the eligibility of their passport should check their documents before they apply.

If you hold dual citizenship , be sure to travel to Canada with the same passport that you used to register for the eTA.

Advantages of the Canada eTA for Singaporean travellers

Singaporean nationals enjoy several benefits when travelling to Canada, thanks to the eTA:

  • Simple, quick-to-use online application
  • No in-person meetings to do visa paperwork
  • Rapid processing
  • Allows an unlimited number of trips to Canada for the next 5 years
  • Lets you stay in Canada for up to 6 months

Instead of having to file visa paperwork in person at the Canadian High Commission to Singapore, you can apply in minutes online from your home or office.

Enter your details and register your Singaporean passport in the short online Canada eTA application form and you’ll receive your travel authorisation within 2 days .

There is even a Priority Processing option available through our site, which allows you to get your eTA within one (1) hour if you need it urgently.

FAQs About Canada Visa for Singaporean

Can singaporean passport holders enter canada without a visa.

Singaporeans travelling to Canada by air need an eTA to enter Canada visa-free . Citizens of Singapore cannot clear Canadian border control without a visa if they do not have an approved electronic travel authorization.

Singaporeans with an eTA can enter Canada for business, leisure, or medical purposes without a visa. The eTA is also required to transit through a Canadian airport.

Singaporeans travelling to Canada for other purposes or for longer periods of time either need to obtain the relevant Canadian visa or enter the country with an eTA and obtain the required permit to stay.

How long can a Singaporean national stay in Canada?

Although the exact amount of time varies , the majority of Singaporean citizens with an eTA are granted the maximum 6-month stay.

Conveniently, the Canada eTA is multiple-entry and valid for 5 years, or until the passport expires: Singaporeans can enjoy several trips to the country using the same authorization. Each trip may be granted for up to 6 months.

Singaporean passport holders also need an eTA to transit through a Canadian airport , even for short layovers.

Anyone wishing to stay in Canada for longer than 6 months should apply for the relevant Canadian permit or visa.

Do Singaporean citizens have to apply for an eTA for every trip to Canada?

One of the great advantages of a Canada eTA is that it is multiple-entry. Singaporean eTA holders can re-enter Canada several times using the same authorisation provided the length of their stay does not exceed the maximum number of days permitted.

In addition, the Canadian travel authorization is valid for 5 years from the issue date. It is not necessary to reapply until the permit expires.

As the eTA is conveniently linked to the passport , it is not possible to transfer it from one document to another. This means that, if the Singaporean passport expires before the eTA, a new travel authorisation must be requested using the new passport.

Can Singaporean citizens travel to Canada?

As of September 7, 2021, it is once again possible to travel to Canada for vacation, business or to visit friends and family, subject to specific requirements.

However, due to COVID-19, travel advice is subject to rapid change so we recommend that you frequently review Canada's current entry restrictions and requirements.

Safety and Security

Driving: Snow and ice make road conditions especially treacherous in winter. Seek advice on safe driving in icy road conditions. Snow chains or tyres are advisable and may be required in certain provinces. If you are driving to a remote area, pack extra water, food, and blankets. Do not drive if weather conditions are poor. Drivers are strongly encouraged to purchase a comprehensive insurance plan.  Arctic Travel: Travellers should be mindful that search and rescue in the Arctic is difficult. It can take days for help to reach a stranded ship. Travellers should check with the tour operator on their medical support plans and emergency arrangements.

General Travel Advice

Overseas Travel – Be Informed & Be Safe [Updated on 5 February 2024]

Singaporeans planning overseas travel are reminded to take the necessary precautions, including being prepared to deal with accidents, natural disasters or terrorist attacks. Singaporeans are also reminded to be familiar with your destination’s local laws, customs, and COVID-19 regulations.

Demonstrations do occur in major cities across the world. Such demonstrations can sometimes escalate into violence. It is important for Singaporeans to keep abreast of local news, avoid any protests or demonstrations and heed the advice of the local authorities.

When participating in outdoor leisure activities overseas, Singaporeans should be mindful that certain sporting activities, especially in open seas, may carry risks. Besides ensuring that one has the physical competencies and appropriate condition to undertake the activity, every effort should be made to ascertain if the trip organiser or guide is reliable and competent, and that appropriate safety and contingency plans are in place. When in doubt, Singaporeans should consult the relevant professional bodies or sporting associations for specific advice.

For those planning to travel, here are some tips:

Before travelling

  • Familiarise yourself with our network of overseas missions.
  • Purchase comprehensive travel insurance and be familiar with the terms and coverage.
  • Equip yourself with research about your destination’s entry requirements, current situation, local laws and customs.
  • eRegister with us on our website ( www.mfa.gov.sg ) so that we may reach out to you during an emergency.

While travelling

  • Always take care of your personal safety, remain vigilant and monitor local weather news, advisories, and security developments.
  • Exercise caution around large gatherings and avoid locations known for demonstrations or disturbances.
  • Be prepared for possible delays and last-minute changes in travel plans especially during unforeseen events such as natural disasters, social unrest or terror attacks.
  • Stay connected with your friends and family. Inform them of your whereabouts and provide them with your overseas contact details.
  • In the event that you require consular assistance, please contact the nearest Singapore Overseas Mission or call the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Duty Office at +65 6379 8800/+65 6379 8855.

Advisory: Email Scams

There have been reports of individuals receiving scam emails/messages purportedly sent from friends in distress overseas. These emails/messages typically originate from an email address/social media known to the receiver bearing claims of the sender getting into trouble overseas and urgently requesting financial assistance. The sender would also claim to have approached a Singapore Embassy/Consulate and the local Police for help to no avail.

MFA takes the safety of all Singaporeans very seriously.  Singaporeans in distress approaching our Overseas Missions for assistance will be rendered with all necessary consular assistance.  If you receive such emails/messages from purported friends seeking funds transfers, we strongly advise you to call them first to verify the authenticity of the emails/messages before responding to their request.  It is also not advisable to give out any personal information such as NRIC/passport numbers, address, telephone number, etc.  Any form of reply, even one of non-interest, could result in more unsolicited emails.  Members of the public who suspect that they have fallen prey to such scams should report the matter to the Police immediately.  Should Singaporeans abroad require consular assistance, they can contact the nearest Singapore Overseas  Mission  or call the Ministry of Foreign Affairs 24-hr Duty Office at +65 6379 8800/+65 6379 8855.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is a ministry of the Government of Singapore responsible for conducting and managing diplomatic relations between Singapore and other countries and regions.

Canada's immigration policies are designed to be inclusive yet stringent, ensuring that visitors meet all necessary criteria for entry into the country.

Whether you're aiming for a short visit, planning to work, or intending to study, knowing the details of visitor visas, work permits, and study permits is essential. Singaporeans must navigate through application processes that demand proof of financial stability, qualifications, and intentions. For visitors, a Temporary Resident Visa is needed for stays of up to six months. Those seeking employment require a work permit, dependent on a job offer from a Canadian employer. Meanwhile, prospective students must secure a study permit for courses longer than six months. Familiarity with these requirements leads to a hassle-free transition to Canada, aligning with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada's policies.

Visitor Visa

A visitor visa, also known as a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), is required for Singaporeans wishing to visit Canada for a short period, typically up to six months. Whether you're visiting family, exploring Canada's vast landscapes, or attending business meetings, a visitor visa is essential. To obtain a visitor visa, applicants must demonstrate their financial stability, intent to return to Singapore, and ties to their home country, among other documents.

The application process involves gathering necessary documents, including proof of ties to Singapore and financial means, and submitting an application to the Canadian immigration authorities. It's crucial to apply well in advance of your planned travel date to accommodate processing times. Ensuring you meet all visa requirements is the first step towards a memorable visit to Canada.

Work Permit

For those aiming to engage in employment in Canada, a work permit is mandatory.  This permit is essential for anyone from Singapore wishing to work in Canada, ensuring that they meet the country’s legal requirements for foreign workers. This permit is designed for individuals who have received a job offer from a Canadian employer. The employer may need to obtain a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) to hire a foreign worker. Applicants must prove their qualifications for the job, including work experience and education, in their application. The work permit is usually valid for the length of your job contract, with possibilities for renewal under certain conditions.

Study Permit

Singaporeans planning to pursue studies in Canada for a course longer than six months require a study permit. This permit not only allows you to study at designated learning institutions but also work part-time on campus.

To apply, candidates must first secure acceptance from a recognized educational facility. The application process requires proof of financial stability to cover tuition and living expenses, alongside evidence of ties to Singapore, ensuring your intent to return post-study and be a law-abiding citizen with no criminal record, among other requirements. Applying for a Study Permit also opens opportunities for part-time employment on campus, enriching your academic and cultural experience in Canada.

Application Process

The application process for Singaporeans traveling to Canada varies based on the type of visa or permit required. Generally, it involves the following steps:

1. Determine the Type of Visa/Permit Needed:

Based on your purpose of visit, identify whether you need a visitor visa, work permit, or study permit.

2. Gather Required Documents:

Collect all necessary documents, including passports, proof of financial support, letters of invitation or job offers, and any other relevant information as per the specific visa type.

3. Complete the Application:

Fill out the application form for the respective visa or permit. This can usually be done online through the official Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website.

4. Pay the Fees:

Application fees vary depending on the visa or permit type. Ensure payment is made as per the instructions provided in the application process.

5. Attend an Interview or Biometrics Appointment:

Some applicants may be required to attend an interview or provide biometrics as part of their application.

6. Wait for Processing:

Processing times can vary based on the type of application and other factors. It’s essential to apply as early as possible to accommodate any delays.

Important Considerations

When planning your journey from Singapore to Canada, it's crucial to understand the visa application process efficiently, whether you're applying for a visitor visa, work permit, or study permit. An essential aspect is understanding the specific requirements for each visa type, ensuring your application aligns with the guidelines set by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

  • Dual Intent: For individuals planning to stay in Canada temporarily but considering permanent residence in the future, it's important to understand the concept of dual intent and how it can impact your application.
  • Health and Security Checks: Depending on your situation, you may be required to undergo medical exams or security checks.
  • Applicants should pay close attention to the documentation required, including financial proofs, letters of invitation, or job offers, and adapt to any updates in the application procedures. For those seeking a work permit or study permit, demonstrating ties to Singapore and intent to return after the visa expires is vital.
